Waste Not, Want Not

FoodForward SA Takes on the Challenge of Wastage South Africa is currently 15th on the list of rubbish-producing countries at 54,425 tonnes, according to the World Bank. However, the amount of waste produced per household every day is roughly 2 kg, which is 38th globally. This means that business and industry remain the core contributors to waste. Text: Supplied Images © iStockphoto.com

About 46 % of the world’s solid waste is organic material, with 17 % being paper, 10 % plastic, 5 % glass and 4 % metal. The World Bank’s data shows that only 1 % of all waste is recycled, with 59 % ending up in landfill sites or 33 % being dumped. Here are three of the most common problems caused by increasing waste in landfills: Toxins: Because of how the many different materials end up in landfills, toxins are released and eventually seep into the soil and groundwater, where they can cause catastrophic results for years afterwards. Leachate: Leachate is the liquid that forms when the waste in a landfill breaks down and

water filters through and picks up the toxins. This can happen when it rains on a landfill. This can produce a toxic combination, including the following chemicals: • Methane • Carbon Dioxide • Organic Acids • Alcohols • Aldehydes This chemical cocktail can penetrate into the soil and groundwater, contaminating it, which in turn can cause health risks for any who come into contact with it, even decades later. Greenhouse Gases: Organic waste is typically compacted when dumped in

a landfill. This process removes oxygen, causing the material to break down, thereby producing methane, which is hazardous to our environment, flammable, and can be dangerous in large concentrations. In order to try and mitigate these effects, we must all make an effort to embrace the three R’s: • Reduce the amount you consume. The fewer items you buy, the fewer things you need to throw away. • Reuse everything and anything you can. You can reuse a container again and again for the same or an alternative purpose instead of buying yet another product. A large-scale

example of this is the returnable glass bottle deposit system, where you receive a small amount for returning the bottle to the retailer. Upcycling – repurposing an item into a new product and giving it a new life – also falls under reusing. • Recycle to extract valuable, reusable material from a waste item and allow it to be processed into a new product. Although this does help to reduce waste in landfills, it is resourceintensive and the previous two options should be considered before recycling. “We have been able to reduce our cost per meal from R1.08 last year to 86c per meal this year. This is a function of our ability to grow the tonnage of food that was rescued and distributed,” says Crispin Sonn, Chairperson for FoodForward SA. “The tonnage of food collected this year is up 35 % from 3.3 million tons to 4.3 million tons, which translates into 14.5 million meals,” adds Andy Du Plessis, Managing Director of FoodForward SA.

Food Lovers Market have been partners of FoodForward SA since 2009 and donate surplus fruit and vegetables to beneficiary organisations. They also donate R50,000 worth of fresh fruit and vegetables on a monthly basis.

PARTNERING FOR SUCCESS FoodForward SA partner with numerous grocery chains and food wholesalers to play a vital role in the food-recovery programme. During 2017, Pick n Pay alone donated 2.1 million kg of groceries, which amounts to 50 % of FoodForward SA’s total tonnage. Shoprite and Checkers have also grown to become a crucial collaborator for FoodForward SA. The companies

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? Play your part by reducing your waste, reusing old items and recycling what you can to help prevent the development of toxic environments around the country. You can also make donations to FoodForward SA to reduce the amount of hungry South Africans, or host food drives to help FoodForward SA fill even more empty tummies in 2018 and beyond.

Created by new head chef, Marc Proenca, the snack menu packs a bold punch of flavour to work perfectly with sundowners, afternoon drinks, or a cocktail before heading out on the town. “A speakeasy is a prohibition bar and a drinking club, and we want to get more of that going,” Marc explains. “We’re not mixologists, but we can offer great wine,

craft beer and spirits prepared in a quirky way and served alongside some great flavours.” Dishes on the menu include potato skins with a smoked garlic aioli and onion dust; deep-fried mac ’n cheese with smoked cheddar; fiery chorizo bitterballen served with homemade tomato jam and chili oil; and spicy jalapeño poppers in a tempura batter and stuffed with ricotta, lime and coriander. Savour Cooler Climes

Journey’s End March, 1918. C-company arrives to take its turn in the front-line trenches in northern France led by the war-weary Captain Stanhope (Sam Claflin). A German offensive is imminent, and the officers (Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham and Tom Sturridge) and their cook (Toby Jones) distract themselves in their dugout with talk of food and the lives they left behind. Stanhope, meanwhile, soaks his fear in whisky,

unable to deal with his dread of the inevitable. A young officer, Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), has just arrived, fresh out of training and abuzz with the excitement of his first real posting – not least because he is to serve under Stanhope, his former school house monitor and the object of his sister’s affections. Each man is trapped, the days ticking by, the tension rising, and the attack drawing ever closer.

Concentrated berries with savoury notes of dried fynbos, lavender and fresh rosemary make Steenberg Merlot the ideal fireside comforter on chilly autumn or winter days. Crafted from vines on the cool Steenberg foothills, the fresh and vibrant 2015 vintage is richly rewarding, with a mouthful of plum, dark chocolate and black olives. Made for the long haul with the tannin and acidity in perfect balance, the Steenberg Merlot 2015 has the potential to age beautifully for up to 15 years. It’s also a slam dunk with red meat. Chef Kerry Kilpin of Steenberg’s popular Bistro Sixteen82 recommends a delicious grilled sirloin drizzled with a whisky and black pepper jus and a green pea and tomato salsa. The Steenberg Merlot 2015 is available at a cellar door price of R175.

Turn it Up! 2018 promises to be a major year for rising pop sensation Cara Frew, who recently released her new album, Flame. The album is an expansion of her 2017 EP Dance and features some of Cara’s biggest tracks, such as “Free” (Household Funk Remix), “Only High with You” and “You Got Me”. Cara Frew studied at the Malie Kelly Music School & Vocal Academy in Johannesburg, and went on to do a stint at the Song Writing School of Los Angeles in the US, where she gained first-hand experience in song writing and studio production. Having studied and networked in LA it wasn’t long before Cara had the opportunity to work with musical greats such as Lauren Christy and Andre Lindal, the creative duo behind Kelly Clarkson’s Grammy-winning “Stronger”. Listing Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey as some of her favourite artists, it was a dream come true to record her first four-track EP (Come Close to Me) with Daniel Heath, who was responsible for Del Rey’s tracks “Blue Jeans” and “Young and Beautiful”. All four tracks were co-written with Stefan Skarbek, who worked closely with Winehouse. Back home in South Africa, Cara collaborated on a song with one of Africa’s biggest exports, worldrenowned DJ and music producer, Black Coffee. “I’ll Find You” was the first release off Black Coffee’s 2015 album. The collaboration afforded Cara the opportunity to perform at Sónar, Ultra Music Festival South Africa and Miami in 2016. Cara is no stranger to the international stage as she has performed at Ultra Music Festival South Africa, Ultra Music Festival Miami, Ultra Music Festival Singapore, Coachella, and most recently the Viper Room in West Hollywood. Although she spends her time between the United States and South Africa, Cara’s ambitions to become one of SA’s biggest musical exports is apparent in her new record. It is a testament of her position as one of SA’s most exciting dance-pop singers and songwriters.

PLAYING With our EMOTIONS There’s nothing more magical than the theatre – when darkness descends, the stage illuminates, and you’re transported into another world. So if you can’t remember the last time you saw a live show, you’re missing a treat. Lots of treats, in fact, because South Africa’s playwrights are crafting brilliant works that will have you laughing, crying, thinking and learning – possibly all at the same time. Text: Lesley Stones Images © Supplied

MIKE VAN GRAAN “There’s something about the engagement between the live audience and the people on stage that you don’t experience in other art forms,” says playwright Mike van Graan. “There are characters that reflect you and your anxieties, your hopes and fears, your laughter, your anger – and in a society as traumatised as ours, theatre can offer hope and escapism.”

26/

INDWE

If there’s an issue of social significance to discuss, Van Graan has most likely already written a play about it. He’s a razor-sharp satirist and life-long activist who wraps his messages in jokes, political wisecracks and witty banter, winning laughs as he nudges you to think differently about racism, poverty, corruption, climate change, funerals, and even football.

His shows like State Fracture provoke unbridled laughter plus a few shocked “yohs” at his audacity, as he treads a fine line between hilarity and dubious taste like a tightrope walker, tilting over but never quite falling in. Others are gripping dramas like Rainbow Scars and When Swallows Cry, with humour easing the tension. He writes to offer catharsis, he says. “Many people are incredibly traumatised by

our past and plays offer a way to deal with those traumas or current traumas. Satire helps people to laugh at those things.” Van Graan was classified as coloured during apartheid, and his first plays were performed at illegal protest marches. Now his 30 scripts and his involvement with local and global organisations that promote cultural diversity make him a powerful voice in the arts world. This month he’ll fly to Sweden to receive the prestigious Hiroshima Prize, awarded to cultural activists whose work fosters dialogue, understanding and peace. His tense political thriller Green Man Flashing uncannily predicted the corruption and sex scandals that would hit Jacob Zuma. Catch it at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square in Sandton, Johannesburg, until 12th May. And visit www.mikevangraan.co.za for more information. JEMMA KAHN The Japanese art of kamishibai arrived in South Africa through Jemma Kahn. This is an ancient form of theatre where painted pictures in a frame are revealed one by one to tell a story. But there’s nothing elegantly oriental about the way Kahn does it. She’s turned kamishibai

into saucy, sexy shows like The Epicene Butcher and Other Stories for Consenting Adults, complete with a male assistant wearing . . . Well, not very much at all. Kahn creates her own scripts, sometimes bringing in collaborators, and acts them out with zeal. “I write because often I can’t afford to pay other, real writers what they deserve,” she jokes. “I haven’t written enough to have a speciality, but they share a humorous fixation with mortality. I probably get that from my parents – they talk about death non-stop.” Each work is an attempt at a new genre, she says. “With In Bocca al Lupo I was trying comic memoir. With a new one, The Borrow Pit, I want to do historical fiction mixed with horror. But my intention is always to entertain and transport – those clichéd storytelling terms.” Kahn believes there is nothing more engaging than the theatre. “When you watch something good, you’re transfixed. A film can do that too, but the contact is scarier in the theatre because the actor is right there. To watch actors nailing it is like watching alchemy.” Kahn will premiere The Borrow Pit at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown from 28th June to 8th July. For more information, visit jemmakahn.com. LOUIS VILJOEN “I write because I am a writer and there is almost nothing else I can do reasonably well. It’s a combination of the compulsion to write and good old survival,” jokes Louis Viljoen, the Writer in Residence at Cape Town’s Fugard Theatre. That’s a position that gives him the welcome and unusual security of guaranteed commissions. He’s written, directed or produced numerous plays and won awards for Champ, The Kingmakers and The Pervert Laura. “This is the only way I know how to feed myself, so I have no choice but to write in order to get through this life with as little misery as possible,” he says. His deep thoughts get darker, too, as his writing explores “the well of awfulness we all have inside of us”, and how that affects our lives, the society we live in, the institutions we rely on, and the traditions we desperately cling to.

But my job is to tell a story, entertain an audience, and leave it open to them to react in whatever way they want.” Viljoen’s new horror-comedy, The Demon Bride, runs at Cape Town’s Fugard Studio Theatre from 8th May to 2nd June. NADIA DAVIDS Since part of the thrill of the theatre is being able to recognise and relate to its characters, Nadia Davids feels drawn to create more roles for Muslim women. Her main subjects are the historical and present difficulties of Cape Town, with a focus on complex, funny, bright and interesting women of colour who have something to say about the world. “Writing is one of my chief joys but it’s also the process by which I try to make sense of things. Life can be overwhelmingly complex and writing allows me to untangle that complexity, just a little,” she says. “It’s about trying to connect to other people through words, to share ideas, to find innovative ways of telling stories.” Gathering together to enjoy live experiences is still important even in this virtual-reality world, she says. “Theatre is an ancient activity and I’m glad people still have a reason to gather together, to watch something unfold live. And theatre can often be a good night out!” Her play What Remains has just won five awards in the Fleur de Cap Theatre Awards, including the Best New South African Script. This fusion of text, dance and movement tells a story about the discovery of a slave burial ground in Cape Town. For more information, visit www.nadiadavids.com.

CELEBRATE AFRICA MONTH THIS MAY The theme for Africa Month 2018 is “A Year of Nelson Mandela: Building a Better Africa and a Better World”. The Department of Arts and Culture invites all of the people in the Republic of South Africa, the rest of the African continent and the African Diaspora, as well as international guests to join us in the Africa Month celebrations in May. Text & Images © The Department of Arts and Culture

Africa Month will comprise a variety of cultural activities around the central theme of the centenary of the late and great statesman and first president of a democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa, President Nelson Mandela, whose life’s contribution became an embodiment of the shared hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the people of South Africa and of all people globally fighting for an end to racism. The centenary of his birth is an opportunity for renewal and a strengthening of the African agenda through the promotion of African identity, values and ethics. This year we

also celebrate the centenary of Albertina Sisulu, a great daughter of the African soil who dedicated her life to the service of her people. We also salute our fallen heroes and acknowledge the great contribution of Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who has recently passed away. This month also serves as a reminder of the establishment of the African Union on 25th May 1963. It was one of the most hopeful symbols of African aspirations and determination as it sought to carve a proper place for our continent in the world. By establishing the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU) in 1963, the African

continent became a pioneer in being the first continent to focus on continental unity, and to encourage nation building through unity and freedom from oppression. It is in celebration of this milestone of the OAU and its successor, the African Union, that the Department of Arts and Culture will host a series of events to celebrate Africa Day on 25th May and throughout May for Africa Month. Yet even before 1963, many initiatives were taken by Africans – both from the continent and in its diaspora – for Africa to regain its rightful place in the world. South Africans are also found amongst those earlier generations who made enormous

contributions towards this effort. The speech of Pixley Ka Isaka Seme in 1906, on the “Regeneration of Africa”, would be echoed by the generations that followed, and enhanced through a number of initiatives aimed at the decolonisation and regeneration of the continent. Africa Month also seeks to increase the appreciation and demand for arts and culture goods and services, and to stimulate competitive markets for trade among African countries. While existing programmes of the Department of Arts and Culture seek to cultivate an African identity through the popularisation of the national flag and continental flag, as well as the National Anthem and African Union Anthem, it was important to inaugurate a full monthlong programme, a festival of ideas as a celebration of what it means to be African, to deepen and expand our knowledge, engage in cultural exchange, sharpen our ideas, but also to face our continental destiny together. Some of the celebratory events during the 2018 Africa Month celebrations include: • A Festival of Ideas: A series of colloquia and dialogues by prominent Africans on decolonisation. This will take place all around South Africa. Notable speakers in 2018 include Prof Mireille FanonMendes, who will speak on learning from the past to shape Africa’s future, as well as Mutabaruka, the dub poet, educator and radio personality born in Jamaica, who will speak on the importance of key figures in Africa’s development, as well as engage on his own writings. • !Kauru: Contemporary Art from Africa – a visual art celebration of African art • Algeria Week • Gcwala Ngamasiko – an intra-African multidisciplinary arts festival • Focus on African Archives • Focus on African Indigenous Cuisine • Focus on African Fashion • Zakifo – music festival in Durban • Bassline Africa Day Concert in Johannesburg • SANAA Africa Festival • We Are Africa Film Festival Detailed times and dates can be found at: www.dac.gov.za. @ArtsCultureSA #AfricaMonth

The Rise of the

STAYCATION

Discover a Whole New World in Your Own Backyard The prospect of staying ‘at home’ may not be quite as exciting as boarding a plane for exotic foreign shores, but with proponents saying it’s a less stressful form of travel – not to mention a cheaper one – ‘staycations’ appear to be on the rise. Text: Supplied Images © Dream Hotels & Resorts & iStockphoto

According to Google Search, trends show that staycations are now a bigger than ever trend, with many travellers seeking holiday destinations that are within driving distance. “Many South Africans know the benefits of travelling locally, but there’s a large proportion of South Africans that do not have a culture of travel that could be choosing to spend their hard-earned budget on experiences instead of material goods,” says Sharmila Ragunanan, Group Marketing Manager Dream Hotels & Resorts. “As economic sentiment improves in South Africa, a local holiday is a great, easy first step to developing a love for travel. Thousands of foreign tourists have already discovered the diversity that South Africa has to offer travellers, so South Africans should follow suit.

“You don’t need to travel to France for culture. You don’t need to visit Italy for delicious food. You don’t need to travel to the USA for spectacular natural attractions. You can enjoy all these experiences right here in South Africa. When they say that South Africa offers a world in one country, they’re right.” Convinced? Then how about checking out these top staycation destinations? THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND Located just 50 km north of Johannesburg, discover the birthplace of humanity at the Cradle of Humankind, home to about 40 % of the world’s discovered human ancestral fossils. Your visit does not have to begin and end with bones, fossils and ancient history, though. There are also plenty of opportunities to

enjoy the area’s natural beauty and see the wildlife species that find sanctuary here in the picturesque Highveld landscape. Caving in Sterkfontein and a Walk Through History at Maropeng Over 500 hominid fossils and 9,000 stone tools used by our human ancestors have been found in the Sterkfontein Caves. This is also the site of two major finds which changed modern palaeontology: The Australopithecus africanus or Mrs. Ples, dating back 2,5 million years, and Little Foot, an almost complete ape man dating back four million years. Tap into your inner caveman and take one of the tours that start above ground and descend deep within the cave. Another stop should definitely be the Maropeng Visitors Centre which offers

a world-class, self-guided, interactive exhibition focusing on the development of humans over millions of years. Visitors will enjoy the underground boat ride and gain great insights from the 2,500 m² exhibit. A Nature Lover’s Paradise Mount Savannah offers 2,000 hectares of game-viewing pleasure with such species as buffalo, zebra, springbok and giraffe, among others, roaming its rolling landscapes. Count the number of bird species you encounter during your family game drive, or retreat to the plunge pool at the resident lodge to cool off. Hunt for Gold At the Blaauberg Historic Gold Mine, you will have the opportunity to embark on a tour of the corridors of the first gold mine in Gauteng. Even better yet, you will be required to “dress” for the occasion in overalls and a helmet before navigating the “mock mine”. This is a great way to gain first-hand experience of how gold was mined in the past, and to view some of the equipment that miners used all those years ago, from picks and pit props to coco pans and rope winches. ST LUCIA Indulge your sense of adventure and explore South Africa’s wild side in St Lucia in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Besides being home to hippos and crocs, what makes it

even more magnificent is that it is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects a large portion of South Africa’s eastern coastline. So, get ready for the great outdoors and a bit of adventure with mountain-biking, fishing trips, turtle tours and bird-watching.

Discover the Big Five on Foot Forget bumpy game vehicles. At Imfolozi Game Reserve you will have the unique opportunity to go in search of Africa’s Big Five on foot. Imagine the thrill of coming face-to-face with an elephant while walking through the bush?

Turtle Time See the Maputaland turtles in their natural habitat during nesting and hatching season. At night, you can join a tour to look for nesting females and observe baby turtles emerging from their sandy nests. During the day, you may even have the opportunity to swim with them.

Chameleon Night Safaris St Lucia is also one of the best places to get a glimpse of a flap-necked chameleon, as they are easily spotted at night during a Chameleon Night Safari in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. You may also spot leopard, giraffe, buffalo and hippo, as well as nocturnal species such as bush babies and aardvarks.

THE CEDERBERG Leave the bright city lights behind and head out for a relaxing break amongst wildflowers, Rooibos plants and rock art. The Cederberg is the ideal spot for those who love the rugged outdoors, uncovering centuries of San heritage and indulging in locally brewed tea or beer. All Things Rooibos Did you know that Rooibos is truly and uniquely proudly South African? The area surrounding Citrusdal is the only place in South Africa – and for that matter the world – where Rooibos grows naturally. Pay a visit to Carmien Rooibos Tea Farm and enjoy a tour of the farm, which includes a walk through the entire Rooibos-making process and the opportunity to taste different delicious varieties of Rooibos. Back in the Saddle Piekenierskloof Mountain Resort’s Blazing Saddles trail network is a must for pedal-heads. Take your pick of their red, blue and green routes for mountain bikers of different levels of experience and expertise. The red route spans some 26 km with a fair amount of climbing, while the 16 km blue route is accessible and fun for the less fit and less technically proficient rider. The 3 km green route comprises a single track offering a few technical challenges. Flower Power Unique to this part of the country is of course the famous Namaqualand flowers. Each year around August and September, this area offers up a unique display of wild flowers incorporating over 4,000 species. Take a day trip to Ramskop Wildlife Reserve, which is home to 350 species of wildflowers or drive through the picturesque Biedouw Valley for an al-fresco picnic.

Make Contact With a

Whole New World The Benefits of Contact Lenses 2018 marks the 750th anniversary of one of mankind’s greatest inventions: spectacles. From humble beginnings, spectacles evolved into an indispensable accessory that, to this day, continue to enhance the daily lives of millions around the world. In fact, according to the Vision Council of America, almost 75 % of adult Americans use either glasses or contact lenses to correct some form of visual impairment. Text & Images © Specsavers

CONTACT LENS CLUB

While glasses are still generally the preferred choice for vision correction, contact lenses have seen a significant rise in popularity, particularly over the past two decades. They have proven themselves invaluable in a number of lifestyle areas such as sports, leisure, and social activities. SPORTY CONVENIENCE For those of us who enjoy outdoor sports, such as hiking, biking and running, contact lenses provide crisp, all-round vision without any risk of fogging. They’re also far superior in wet conditions, where mud and rain spatter can impair visibility through glasses to the point where they have to be removed and cleaned. This is certainly not the case with contact lenses. When it comes to other leisure activities, contact lenses are also often the more practical alternative. Boat rides are notorious for having glasses whipped off your face in sudden gusts of wind – a

sure way to put a damper on a fun day out. Game drives are great for observing animals up close and personal, often through a pair of binoculars. Contact lenses aid this experience by reducing peripheral light and distortion that would be apparent when using binoculars while wearing glasses. As for the cinema, contact lenses are a must if you plan on treating yourself to a 3D movie or IMAX production. The 3D glasses can interfere with prescription glasses, detracting from the experience. FOR SOCIAL-LENSING Then there’s the social aspect. Some people feel more confident in their appearance when wearing contact lenses. Others believe they engage better in eyeto-eye conversations when wearing contact lenses rather than glasses. It’s a personal thing and people appreciate having the choice. Another fun perk of contact lenses is that you can wear an unlimited range of

fashionable, non-prescription sunglasses, rather than being confined to just one prescription pair. While the advantages of contact lenses are numerous, glasses will always have their place. That is why most people own a pair of glasses as well as contact lenses. One of the main reasons is that glasses can “relax” your eyes after wearing contact lenses for an extended period of time – especially if you’re catching up on some reading before going to sleep. And that’s the best part of modern technology: There’s always an option. Especially for those times when you misplace your glasses! With fantastic deals and services from the Contact Lens Club, you’re sure to get a great product delivered to your door at a surprisingly good price. DELICIOUS DURBAN There’s A Reason for Everyone to Visit Durbs!

Sunny skies, warm days all year round, and nights filled with fun beach activities, musical concerts, exciting night lifestyle and adrenaline-filled activities – these are all signs that you have finally arrived at one of the Top 52 must-visit destinations in 2018, according to Fodor’s travel guide, a US-based tourism publication. Text: Durban Tourism Images © Durban Tourism & iStockphoto.com

Part of the city’s visitor strategy focuses on growing the Durban brand in key markets, by leveraging the city’s infrastructure and its experience in hosting both local and international visitors. This was emphasized through the launch of the Discover Durban #durbanhasmore campaign in November 2017. The campaign seeks to unpack the hidden tourism gems in Durban and the KwaZuluNatal province, while also encouraging South African citizens and expatriates to visit local destinations. WHAT’S TO DISCOVER IN DURBAN? From adrenaline-fueled adventures to family-orientated activities, or simply a relaxed holiday on the beach, Durban offers something for everyone. Due to its mild

climate, Durban has a laid-back outdoor lifestyle, providing activities ranging from mountain-biking and diving, to deepsea fishing, game viewing, or historical battlefield tours. BEACHFRONT & OCEAN For those looking for a relaxed beach holiday, Durban’s long stretch of coastline provides a multitude of golden beaches which leave visitors spoiled for choice. Grab a board and surf some of the country’s best waves, lounge on a golden beach, cycle or walk on the promenade, grab a bite to eat, fish, snorkel, scuba dive, canoe or kite surf on Durban’s ocean playground. Visit a magical world of sea and marine life at uShaka Marine World, where you can look forward to hairraising water slides, dolphin shows, deadly creatures, a fun kids’ zone, great food and unforgettable shopping. Head to the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium and take a trip on the Sky-Car, or make the 550-step adventure walk for the best view of the city from the top of the arch, and then jump into the void on the largest swing in the world. ARTS & CULTURE Hop aboard the Ricksha Bus (+27 31 322 4205) for a scenic three-hour overview of Durban’s major attractions. Explore the rich history of traditional Zulu culture in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, or visit a township for a new urban African culture. In celebrating what would have been Mandela’s 100th birthday this year, there are guided tours to the popular Woza eNanda Heritage Route in Inanda. Inanda is of importance as it is where the late former President Nelson Mandela chose to vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. This is now an opportune moment for people to visit Inanda and commemorate his life. The Inanda Heritage Route takes in some of the most important, albeit little-known, historical sites of Durban. Winding its way through the Inanda Valley, it provides a snapshot of critical South African history as well as, perhaps surprisingly, India’s past. It has a wealth of history that starts in Phoenix Settlement, established in 1904 by Mahatma Gandhi. Here you can see Gandhi’s house, and his International Printing Press and Museum. Next it

RANMORE

Global Equity Fund Sean Peche launched the Ranmore Global Equity Fund in October 2008 in the midst of the global financial crisis, and R100 invested in the USD class at launch has grown to R360 as at the end of February 2018*. But, as with investing in most types of funds, one’s capital is always at risk and past performance is no indicator of future performance. The fund’s mandate is to invest in a diverse portfolio of primarily large and mid-sized leading global companies from a range of industry sectors. We spoke to him to find out more. Sean Peche

How can you run a global equity fund from a single location in the UK? In one word, technology. About 30 years ago you needed an army of analysts to run around the world visiting companies, but these days you can download historic financial data, annual reports and meeting transcripts in seconds. Many of the world’s best fund managers are today located far from global financial capitals, in places like Bermuda and Mauritius. WHY DO YOU RUN A GLOBAL FUND? We are increasingly global citizens – we holiday internationally, and buy cars, food, smartphones, computers and clothes manufactured worldwide. Therefore, we need to preserve and grow our wealth in international terms. On a personal level, I try to do that by gaining exposure to a basket of international currencies and earnings via the share prices of some of the best businesses and industries across the world. While it’s very easy today to invest internationally, for historical reasons many people still invest primarily in their domestic markets. From a regulatory point of view, the Ranmore Global

fees, and so generally underperform their benchmark. Furthermore, passive investing also means you have hardly any chance of outperforming the market.

CAN SOUTH AFRICANS INVEST IN THE RANMORE GLOBAL EQUITY FUND? Yes. I recommend that investors obtain independent financial and tax advice when deciding on whether to invest directly offshore in a product. However, our Fund is available on many of the leading local offshore platforms. Ask your independent financial advisor to contact us.

WHAT ABOUT THE HIGH FEES OF ACTIVE MANAGERS? In my opinion, high fees and especially performance fees are often not in the client’s best interests. Some fund managers claim it “aligns interests” or “creates an incentive”, but other professionals such as doctors and pilots don’t need incentives to do their best, so why should we? I think a far better way to ensure investors’ interests are aligned with the asset manager is if your fund manager has all their investible assets invested alongside clients in the same feepaying classes.

WHAT ABOUT THE RISE OF PASSIVE INVESTING STRATEGIES WHICH SEEK TO TRACK THE PERFORMANCE OF A PARTICULAR BENCHMARK INDEX SUCH AS THE MSCI WORLD INDEX? Passive investing has grown markedly in recent years, and advocates will cite that it removes the risk associated with a manager’s stock selection, which is inherent in an active fund like ours. Passive funds clearly have a role in investment strategies. But passive funds also charge

BUFFALO CITY A gateway to the rugged beauty of the Wild Coast to its north and the Sunshine Coast to its south, East London – or Buffalo City – welcomes you with warm charm to explore its white sandy beaches, outdoor splendour, laid-back markets, and cultural hot-spots. Text: Robyn Davies Images © Ryan Abbott

About 1,000 km east of the Mother City, settled in between the Buffalo River and the Nahoon River on the southeastern coast of South Africa, is the port city of East London. With a rich heritage – it was the birthplace of Steve Biko – this coastal town forms part of South Africa’s much-loved Sunshine Coast, a coastal tourism route that spans some 500 km. This sunny coastal tourism route lives up to its name, with about 320 days out of the year bringing blue skies and sunshine

kisses. With the ideal location, East London is a pristine getaway that wraps you in allround warmth – whether it be interacting with the friendly locals at a Sunday market, taking a cruise along the Buffalo River, or riding a wave’s crest on the Indian Ocean. WATERY ADVENTURES A coastline that includes sheltered beaches and an estuary (pack the dusty bird-spotting book!), East London is a treasure cove, attracting water and outdoor

enthusiasts from near and far. Its shoreline offers a diverse portfolio to suit adventure seekers, or those with a penchant for a leisurely coastal rendezvous. Expansive river banks merge into the ocean, providing the perfect opportunity for fishing, rowing, and cruising. If casting reels doesn’t excite you and rowing is something you leave for those intermittent gym outings, well, cruising is a must! Ballyhoo Cruises offers a mix of cruises along the East London coast and up the Buffalo River, during which you

can sip a cocktail on the deck and enjoy the sub-tropical beauty of the area. Central East London beaches include Orient Beach, Nahoon Beach, and Eastern Beach. Orient Beach is famed as a safe, family-friendly swimming beach with a convenient location, while Eastern Beach, a short distance from the East London Aquarium on the Esplanade, is a magnet for surfers. Perhaps the most popular beach, Nahoon Beach has loads to entertain – from soaking up summertime rays, learning to surf and/or kite surf, meandering through the dunes via the boardwalk, and sandboarding, or taking a short hike in the estuary. With such a fine variety of outdoor offerings, it’s difficult to miss this sunny stop-over. EXPLORING NATURE Close to Nahoon Reef, you can embark on the popular Bat’s Cave Trail in the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve. Starting at the Mercedes-Benz South Africa Coastal

Education and Visitors Centre, a stunning walk along the boardwalk allows you to step back into history and discover where the oldest human footprints known to man were found. For a day trip to untouched coastal gems, head north to Gonubie Beach, or south to Cove Rock, which is a striking sandstone formation known mostly for surfing and diving, as well as idyllic whale watching points. MARKETS & MUSEUMS For a cultural venture, step inside the East London Museum, which was established in 1921 and is noted as a one of the most highly significant natural and cultural museums in South Africa. When it’s time to refuel, visit one of the local markets. Perhaps thanks to all the sunshine, East London is known to be a friendly town with local markets that show strong community spirit and genuine hospitality. Hillcrest Farm in Kidd’s Beach – about 25 km south of the city centre – sets an enchanting,

lively scene for the Avalon Market, which is held on the first Sunday of the month. This family-friendly affair is a go-to spot to find that one of a kind item – from bespoke jewellery, unique clothing, and artwork, to delicious home baked goodies that will keep you smiling on the inside too! Another great farmer’s market is Lavender Blue Market, which is packed with fresh, natural and organic produce – nothing like a healthy dose of endorphins to start a day! Whether it’s navigating the city’s natural and cultural glories, or hitting the beach for an early morning surf, a visit to East London presents an open book of opportunities. Sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters may be clichéd phrases, but these vistas are true for much of East London’s coastline – and with sun a frequent visitor, life in this coastal town can certainly “be a beach”. But, even when the heavens do open up, rest assured that the friendly Buffalo City will keep you smiling.

A Trip to the

MIDDLE OF NOWHERE The Northern Cape is the largest province in South Africa, and so a trip to the land of vast desert, gemstones, and flowers is ideal for explorers looking to take to the open road, and who want the peace and quiet that only being in the middle of nowhere brings. Text: Paula Rabeling Images © Paula Rabeling & Naries Namakwa Retreat

At 07h00, my road trip companion and I set off on the N7 from Cape Town and began the six-hour drive to the Naries Namakwa Retreat in the Northern Cape. The early morning brought mist that settled on the road and the farm lands along the N7. We passed Malmesbury, Koringberg, and several other small towns, before winding along Piekenierskloof Pass in Citrusdal and making a stop for some much-needed coffee. The service station,

thankfully, was serving up Terbodore coffee, and there was also a farm stall suppling locally-made snacks for the road. TEA COUNTRY Citrusdal, at the base of the Cederberg, is a popular pit-stop on this route for many reasons. From a rooibos tea journey at the Carmién Bergendal Rooibos Farm, and pairing tea with wine at Hebron, to a trip down the mountain via the Piekenierskloof

zipline for the more adventurously inclined, and relaxing in the natural hot pools of The Baths, this citrus city (city may be a tad strong a word for this dorpie) is well worth a stay. But we needed to get back on the road. The view from the car windows began changing from uninterrupted expanses of farmland to rocky outcrops – and we knew we were in the Northern Cape. Because of the immense stretch of land which seems

largely uninhabited, it is easy to feel like you’re already in the middle of nowhere. We stopped for lunch in Springbok. As is the case in most small towns, the main road is where everything is located when it comes to things to do. We stopped outside The Pot and Barrel Pub and Restaurant and ventured upstairs to a friendly welcome and ice cold Castle Lights. The menu includes favourites such as burgers and pizzas, but for those wanting a taste of the traditional, there’s a page dedicated to Namaqua specialities: afval [tripe], kidneys, pofadder [lamb’s liver in caul fat], and lamb hearts. A ROCKY RETREAT A short 20-minute drive took us to our destination, Naries Namakwa Retreat. Set in a 6,000 hectare estate, the accommodation options include en-suite rooms in the Manor House – where dinner and breakfast are served, and there is WiFi – two self-catering cottages, and three mountain suites. We were in the latter, so we got back in our car and followed out guide to our cottage. Set next to the other two suites, but still far enough apart to ensure utmost privacy, the Mountain Suites are luxurious interpretations of traditional San huts. Inside, a well-stocked minibar ensures spectacular drinks for sundowners, the beds are laid with lush pillows and linen, and the en-suite bathroom includes a spacious bath decorated with petals and candles. Two loungers are set on the veranda, overlooking the vast and rocky, wild landscape. This is truly a place to relax in the stillness and beauty of nature.

Dinners at Naries consist of three courses of lovingly prepared international flavours. We enjoyed tomato gazpacho with a tot of vodka, BBQ sirloin steak with vegetables, and chocolate and coffee torte to finish it off on a sweet note. Each course has a suggested wine from the extensive wine list. The estate has a number of hiking trails winding through it – from easy-paced 3 km paths, to trails of over 5 km through the wilderness. GETTING FREAKY The next day we went back to Springbok to check out Springbok Lodge and Restaurant. We walked into a bookshop with an array of titles, most focusing on the natural habitat of the Northern Cape and Kalahari. Just past the books, shelves upon shelves of crystals entice visitors. It was easy to spend 30 minutes taking in all the colours of the gemstones before going into the restaurant section of the establishment. In the diner-style aesthetic, we ordered typical diner cuisine in the shape of burgers and shakes. Actually, make that “freakshakes”. This glorious concoction was served in a glass jar, in which chocolatey, ice-creamy goodness was twirled with chocolate syrup and crowned with a dollop of whipped cream, a Flake, and an Oreo. Back at Naries – and after a few hours of rest to recover from the freakshakes

– we went up to the view point for a picnic. The team at Naries put together a spread of epic proportions, with freshly baked olive bread, cheeses, kebabs, chickpea salad, veggie wraps, mini pizzas, pomegranate ice tea, and, to finish, crème brûlée. As we tucked into this feast, overlooking the expanse of natural rugged beauty before us, the sky turning from light blue to deep purple as the sun set, we revelled in the quiet and tranquillity that being in the middle of nowhere brings. AN AFRICAN DREAM COME TRUE Ever fantasised about owning your very own escape in the heart of the African bush? That fantasy could become a reality thanks to Bakubung Villas, an exciting new opportunity presented by the Legacy Hotel Group. Text & Images © Magic Breakaways Property Developments

Less than two hours’ drive from Johannesburg, you could have a private retreat at Bakubung Bush Lodge, which is known as one of South Africa’s iconic Bushveld resorts and is situated in the stunning, malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park. The park was also recently awarded the title of South Africa’s most popular game reserve by the South African Tourism Board. “The Bakubung Villas project is a unique, rare property investment opportunity. It allows investors to acquire their very own piece of this iconic resort and make it their own,” says Ewan Dykes, sales and marketing manager at Magic Breakaways Property Developments. This project is made up of just 22 private stands, all of which are situated within the Pilanesberg National Park, making this an exclusive offering. “Investors can now enjoy the best of both worlds, by purchasing a stand and designing their own private lodge, with the Big Five roaming virtually on their doorstep,

60/

yet still enjoy all the incredible services and facilities already offered by the resort and its hotel,” Dykes says. Bakubung’s facilities include a luxurious new day spa, a variety of dining experiences and bars, children’s playgrounds, and the ever-popular Junior Ranger’s Programme. There are also superb conference facilities, a wildlife and game drive department, tennis courts, and a number of other facilities and services to make use of and enjoy. What’s even more appealing about buying a Bakubung Villa is that the entire investment is structured on a turnkey, hassle-free basis that’s driven and managed by the Legacy Hotel Group. Therefore, everything – from the initial construction of your lodge to the dayto-day operations and management thereafter – is taken care of by one of Africa’s leading hospitality brands. “Owners also have the option of incorporating their lodge into the resort’s commercial rental pool whereby we will completely service, market and manage

your lodge, providing you – as the owner – with an immediate financial return. The year-on-year annual tourism rate is on the increase in the park, and the launch of the new Pilanesberg Airport means our guests and owners will be able to fly from Johannesburg and Cape Town directly to Pilanesberg and back,” Dykes says. “In terms of ownership and accessibility, as well as the broad array of services and facilities both onsite and on neighbouring Bakubung, I think one would struggle to find a similar property opportunity which ticks as many boxes as the Bakubung Villas do,” Dykes concludes. Knowing that you have a place in the magnificent African bush that you can escape to whenever you wish, where housework and maintenance aren’t your responsibility, and one that can even earn you money? Sounds like a dream come true. For more info on this development, please visit www.bakubungvillas.co.za or call Ewan Dykes on +27 83 755 8944.

THE LADY OF THE LAKES Walkersons Hotel and Spa

There is a tale of a lady, a sword, and a lake. It’s a mythical tale of love, treasure, and perseverance, a tale that has enchanted us for eons. Text: Bernard Hellberg Jr Images © Walkersons Hotel and Spa

In the ageless retelling of the story of the mythical King Arthur, a castle is said to have arisen from the rolling hills of the Welsh countryside as long ago as the 12th century, when French romantic poet, Chrétien de Troyes, described a castle in his poem Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart in the 1170s. More accurately, however, the location of King Arthur’s stronghold, if indeed it ever existed, is perhaps best described by Arthurian scholar Norris J Lacy, who

64/

commented, “Camelot, located nowhere in particular, can be anywhere.” If indeed the King’s haven could well be somewhere intriguing, I would like to imagine that it has been found, at last, among the high hills of central Mpumalanga, almost halfway between the hurry of Gauteng and the peaceful wilderness of the Kruger National Park. Set in the eastern highlands east of the enchanting village of Dullstroom, Walkersons Hotel and Spa has enthralled

visitors to this region for more than 20 years. COUNTRY LIFE Surrounded by stunning views of rises and knolls, Walkersons is a classic interpretation of the quintessential country lodge. Appropriately described as a grand country lady, the hotel recently received a subtle revamp to maintain the high standards of luxury that modern travellers have come to expect.

destination de rigueur for anyone seeking a wonderful dining experience in the area. And if a lighter meal is desired, you can take in the views and experience the lighter side of dining from Walkersons’ new Terrace Menu.

Walkersons is an almost unrivalled haven of tranquillity, where the original owners’ vision of a Scottish manor now adds a new welcoming attitude to children; a refreshed culinary vision with lighter dining options; and a renewed focus on self-catering accommodation. While Walkersons’ future

while the Honeymoon Suite is the ultimate luxury retreat with an extra-long king size four-poster bed, separate his and hers bathrooms, twin showers, a Jacuzzi and a wood-burning fireplace. As in every room, a large flat-screen television and other amenities complete the experience.

SLEEPING BEAUTY The high-class experience continues in the elegantly appointed and luxurious bedroom suites, with their en suite bathrooms and large verandas, as well as some of the largest and most comfortable beds that I have ever experienced. Generous in proportion and adorned with multiple

FOR ACTIVE BODIES & RELAXED MINDS The tranquil Walkersons environment belies the numerous outdoor activities available to hotel guests. Although we chose to relax and imbibe the atmosphere during our stay, several walking and hiking trails give one the opportunity to enjoy the natural environment – and maybe even spot a blesbok, zebra or duiker on your route. Also on offer are mountain biking trails (bikes are available to use), or you can try fly-fishing in Walkersons’ famous trout dams, with equipment available, and friendly staff to show you the ropes. Pure indulgence is part of the experience at Walkersons. Besides lush accommodation and world-class dining, the Walkersons Spa also deserves a visit. The spa has three treatment rooms and a steam room, where single or couple treatments can be enjoyed. Walkersons Hotel and Spa is likely one of the finest establishments of its kind in South Africa, and my recommendation to experience its unique brand of old-world luxury and charm stands firm. One simply cannot pass this gem by without at least a daytime visit, although it truly is a place that should be enjoyed as a long weekend getaway. Celebrating the Journey of African Unity Africa Day is taking place on 25th May, commemorating the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). South Africa became part of the organisation in 1994, following the first democratic election that saw the end to Apartheid. Text & Images © Supplied

As time went on, the OAU became the African Union because of the increasingly economic, rather than political, nature of the challenges faced by the continent. Limpopo is an Integral part of South Africa, as much as it is of the African Continent. Limpopo Province, the heartland of Southern Africa, is also known as the gateway to Africa due to its strategic location on the Great North Road to Zimbabwe, its links to the port of Maputo in Mozambique via the Phalaborwa Spatial Development initiative and Maputo corridor as well as its proximity to the Republic of Botswana. In light of Africa Day, the Limpopo Province is working towards: • Optimising the economic opportunities that exist between the province of Matebeleland and the City of Bulawayo (Zimbabwe), the province of Gaza (Mozambique) and the four regions (Oshana, Ohangwena, Omosati, Oshikoto) of Namibia; and facilitating

66/

INDWE

the development of the Limpopo Spatial Development Initiative. • Pursuing excellence in governance that would command investor confidence and attract investment. • Promoting and encourage social and cultural development. • Facilitating the development of resources.

• Promoting the province as a unique ecotourism destination with special reference to the emerging Transfrontier conversation area. South Africa, and Africa as a whole, has made great strides towards overcoming oppression and building a better future for the continent. This Africa Day, do your part in bettering the world around you.

VISIT LIMPOPO Not only is Limpopo the gateway to SADC countries, there are many factors which make the province a must-visit. The vast, natural landscapes that make up Limpopo make it the ideal destination for adventure travellers – rock climbing, canyoning, mountain biking, bungee jumping, and hiking are all activities that can be experienced. No visit to Limpopo is complete without indulging in African cuisine – there are many dining experiences to indulge in when traversing the province. For more information, visit www.golimpopo.com. INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES Trade in the mining and agricultural products of Limpopo is supported by an excellent transport and logistics sector which received an additional boost with the approval by the South African national government of a new Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Musina Makhado, in the province. The rich soil of Limpopo produces great quantities of high quality minerals, fruit and vegetables. Investors with the ability to beneficiate minerals or add value to agricultural produce through agro-processing can take advantage of the favourable terms offered by the Special Economic Zone legislation.

ABOUT THE ARTIST & HER ART On this laidback, velvety-clouded Cape Town afternoon, she and her three boys are enjoying the bliss of family connection. Today’s menu is homemade burgers and chocolate mousse cake. With a sip of champagne. Michaela always knew she would be a painter. Although she maintains that presence, soul, and hard work have ensured her success as an artist, this home and its view plays a huge part in inspiring her creativity.

its balcony and spectacular glass-fronted views of beach, mountain, sky and birds. An expansive, low stretch sofa encourages meditative quiet time, movie watching or listening to music. It’s about ambience and comfort up here. Fairy lights and lampshades provide atmosphere when the downlights are not in focus. Michaela’s work hangs from picture rails on every wall space, filling the rooms with charcoal figures and layered colour bursts.

HOMELY COMFORTS Michaela’s home is modern, bright and relaxed – a far cry from the derelict single-storey house she originally bought before transforming it into a practical paradise. The bedrooms are situated on the ground level, shaded by lavender and plumbago bushes and fronted by a pool surrounded by wooden decking. The front gate is seldom used, as entry via the double garage – well organised with hooks and shelves to store surfing equipment – takes preference, and leads one outside beneath emerald foliage. Entertainment and the flow of ideas happens in the enormous upstairs hub with

FAMILY INSPIRATION Michaela proposes a toast to her eldest son Jason’s latest album release, and to middle son Carl’s new business venture, in which she is also involved. He hand-shapes surfboards, and she splashes on a fun retro touch. Already there is a waiting list and a sudden rush for production. Michaela’s solo exhibition is also coming up. Some of the easels alongside the fireplace exude vibrancy and reflects the freer phase of her artistic creativity. Finally, a cheers to 11-year-old Luca who made the supper. It is delicious! Visit www.michaelarinaldi.com for more information.

Many of Michaela’s works explore the human form in an abstract way using bold colours, lines and textures. While blues seem to dominate many of her canvases, she contrasts this with reds and yellows, which she often enhances using charcoal. “My work is abstract and figurative. I am obsessed with line and movement, the feeling and mood one can create with a line. I have less of an interest in proportion and detail, as long as I can capture the feeling that inspires each piece,” she says. Although most of her work is acrylic on canvas, Michaela has an unwavering curiosity when it comes to experimenting. “I love charcoal and ink, as well as experimenting with gold and copper leaf. Who knows what will be next – I have only just begun. I cannot wait to try my hand at sculpture,” she says. The “in-the-moment” expressions of emotion are completely personal – Michaela is not trying to tell viewers specific things. “I paint for myself. It is my therapy. I have no statements to convey. I wish for the viewer to feel what resonates with them, rather than try to understand my story.” She adds, “It comes from within. I would say most of my work is my soul on a canvas. Some people create through writing or music, I create through my painting.”

A SHINING LIGHT Waking up in the morning to the sounds of seals, the call of sea birds and the soft hum of the antique lighthouse rotating . . . Pelican Point Lodge – located on a sandbar off the coast of Walvis Bay – offers its guests a truly unique opportunity to completely immerse themselves in the natural environment of the Namibian coastline. Text: Charlotte Rogers Images © Ryan Abbott

We arrived in Walvis Bay one cloudy Monday afternoon, but the sky didn’t reflect our mood – we were excited to see what this once sleepy coastal town had to offer. After arranging a pick-up with the lodge, we piled into the cars and headed off towards the salt pans. Hues of white and pink lit up our view as we proceeded cautiously along the dirt roads. The flamingos became brighter and brighter as we ventured deeper into the semiuntouched wilderness. Once clear of the salt pans, the fun began. With our 4X4 expert at the wheel of our Toyota Prado, we had little fear that our trusty mudslinger would get us stranded in the soft sand. After about 40 minutes of excitingly bumpy sand cruising, a shape emerged from the mist.

An antique and well-worn lighthouse – it was built in 1932 – stood out against the eerie seaside backdrop, with the stylish and modern lodge in stark contrast to it. We were greeted by friendly porters who helped us transfer our heavy bags into the warm lodge. Once inside and away from the wind, we were shown to our rooms. Our party occupied two rooms, the Pelican and the Lighthouse. Both rooms are fitted with luxuriously comfy queensized beds, sliding glass doors onto the balcony which look out towards Walvis Bay, a spacious bathroom, warm blankets and comfy seats to sit on while taking in the view. Each room features an EcoSmart Fires – ethanol burners built into concrete ledges, with a very easy and safe lighting process. Sitting in a comfortable bed, watching the waves lap the shore, with a warm fire burning in your peripheral vision is perhaps the best way to spend a cloudy afternoon at the coast. Once you have had your fill of wave watching, there is a wide array of activities to choose from – from boat cruises to bike rides, and seal viewing to jackal tracking. We each mounted a “fat bike”, as they are affectionately known, and started the 18 km round trip to the end of the sandbar. We passed three giant colonies of sleeping seals, a flamboyance of flamingos, three lonely jackals, and even a pod of dolphins a little off shore – talk about a coastal game ride! Sunset at Pelican Point Lodge is best described as a feeling – contentment. Watching the sun disappear behind the horizon while throwing vivid colour across the sky would fill even the grumpiest of travellers with pure peace and satisfaction.

This is the kind of true relaxation that fills every inch and stimulates every nerve in your body. This is the feeling you get at Pelican Point Lodge. Upon departure, we were shepherded to the final experience of our stay – the dolphin cruise. Whisked away on a trusty boat, our guide introduced us to a selection of her ocean friends, namely Nelson the Seagull, too many pelicans to count and the hungry Nicholas, a Cape

fur seal. Nelson accompanied us through the cruise which took us to the very point of the sandbar, the oyster farms, past seal colonies and finally to the Walvis Bay waterfront. Snacks were served and of course, oysters were on the menu. What a way to finish off a stay at one of the most unique lodges in Namibia. Unity in the

SERENGETI It was an unusual sight. A large Martial eagle sat perched on a log, its expansive wings puffed out and pulled in front of it, almost in a self-embrace. A movement to the right of it caught our eye – two Tawny eagles, their eyes trained on something beneath its talons. Peering through the binoculars we made out the inert shape of a hyrax (or dassie). It was a prize catch, and there was no way the Martial was going to share his lunch. I can’t help feeling the same way whenever I discover an amazing new place. I too want to wrap my arms around it and keep it all for myself. But then again, some discoveries are too good not to share.

While the rolling plains of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park are famous for the magnificent annual wildebeest migration, they have become, in recent years, almost as well known for the hordes of overland vehicles and eager tourists who frequent it. It is thus an absolute luxury to find a spot in the park where you feel like you have the place entirely to yourself.

ON THE PLAINS OF THE NORTHERN SERENGETI Kaskaz Mara Camp is just such a place. Situated in the northern reaches of the Serengeti, this area was off limits for many years due to in-fighting between the Maasai and Kuria people. Finally, through conservation education and the building of schools and dispensaries, the fighting ceased, but the area’s reputation still kept

most lodges away. Gradually, though, a few intrepid companies moved into the area, including Nasikia Camps, a familyrun, Arusha-based company that initially made its mark with a number of mobile tented camps. Kaskaz, while also tented, can be found here in this largely isolated part of the park all year round. With an emphasis on creating as minimal a footprint as possible,

The warmth of the staff at Kaskaz Mara Camp, adds to the homely feeling of staying here.

With a comically full, round tummy, an afternoon nap is definitely required!

all 10 of the suites – as well as the main lodge area, the office and even the kitchen – are housed in these billowing tents, all arranged to take in the views of the plains in front of them as well as passing breezes. This is no camping holiday, however, and were it not for zipping open your door in the morning, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in an elegant hotel suite. Wooden floors, enveloping queen-

sized beds, and fully kitted out bathrooms ensure that you’ll never think of a “tent” in the same way again! Wildebeest are creatures of habit – so much so that the herds use the same 13 places to cross the Mara River every year. Several of these are located very close to the camp, making this the ideal base during migration season. In fact, the staff have stories of gigantic herds barrelling

right through the camp, much to the amazement of the guests lucky enough to witness it. Even outside of migration season, there is much to see. Twitchers will be kept busy ticking “lifers” off their lists, while even the common birds – like the yellowthroated long claw, European rollers and augur buzzards – add colour to any game drive. Black-backed jackals were curious

onlookers as we picnicked in the shade of the trees, clinking our G & Ts and feasting on salads, roasted plantains and steak. Giraffe, buffalo and herds of elephants are common here, and the male of the species of perhaps East Africa’s most iconic antelope, the topi, can often be seen silhouetted against the sky, standing proudly atop of a termite mound, in a pose that cannot say anything other than: “Look at me!” The staff at Kaskaz couldn’t be more different from the vain topi. Yet you can’t help but marvel at their sheer enjoyment as they dance and sing – something that seems to happen regularly and spontaneously here! For welcomes and goodbyes, or just to celebrate another glorious African sunset – it is clear that the staff here love their jobs, and it’s hard not to feel part of the family when their hospitality extends to inviting often rhythm-challenged guests to join in! Songs of welcome also await you at Nasikia Camps’ newest – and most luxurious – addition, Ehlane Plains. A short flight on one of Air Excel’s small planes – each bedecked with different brightly coloured tail feathers – will take you from the Kogatende Airstrip to Seronera Airport. The airport is the jumping-off point for exploring the central Serengeti, and as such is usually a hive of frenzied activity. This is why it was a welcome relief to be met with glasses of champagne and some of Ehlane’s famous chocolate brownies by Donna Duggan, who started the tour operator Maasai Wanderings and its hospitality arm, Nasikia Camps, with her late husband Naseeb “Nas” Mfinanga. THE REALISATION OF A VERY SPECIAL DREAM Donna, who is originally from Australia, moved to Tanzania to nurse in the local hospitals, but instead of heading back home after her tenure was up, her life took an unexpected turn when she met and fell in love with her neighbour, Nas. His was a

real rags-to-riches story. Although he had to leave school to become a hawker to support his family, he become well known in Arusha for his gift of the gab and sheer likeability. Together with Donna, he used his knowledge of the Serengeti and his wonderful ability to make connections with people to start a small tour operating business, Maasai Wanderings. Later, they set up Nasikia Camps, which has grown to such an extent that their portfolio now consists of one mobile camp and four permanent ones, with three more on the way.

Tragically, last year, while working on Ehlane Plains, Nas passed away. The camp was to be their flagship and was a special passion project for Nas, who had planned virtually every detail, from the design of the rooms, to the type of furniture they would house. Though devastated by his death, Donna and her family of over 200 staff knew that, come what may, Nas’ dream for Ehlane would come to fruition. Completed in February, the camp now stands as a testament to the amazing man behind it, and the family who built it.

The tents at Ehlane Plains have a distinctly romantic feel.

THE ISOLATION OF THE EASTERN SERENGETI Like Kaskaz, Ehlane Plains is located in another corner of the Serengeti that until recently was a “no-go” area – this time due to a now completed cat research project. Ehlane Plains was one of the first camps to nab a spot in this eastern part of the park, and it is a relief to embrace the blissful feeling of isolation the further you drive from Seronera. The location of the camp plays off this “middle of nowhere” feeling, as its appearance below as you crest a hill comes as a wonderfully unexpected surprise. As too, does the design of the camp itself. The tents here have a decidedly Bedouin quality about them, while lattice work in the bathrooms and wood-backed showers remind one both of a Zanzibari beach hotel and a Scandinavian sauna – an odd-sounding combination, but one that works. The tents are positioned so that when your early morning coffee is delivered, and your tent flap lifted, you can snuggle in bed and watch the sun rise over the horizon. For an even more unimpeded view, three of the tents also boast stargazer platforms, where you can choose to spend the night under the incredible starry skies. The camp’s “crazy chef”, so called because of his high energy and penchant for somersaults, ensures that every meal in the romantically draped dining room will leave guests with happy tummies and taste buds. Afternoons spent in the lounge, reading bird books, playing traditional Tanzanian games, or simply enjoying the view are punctuated only by the gentle attentions of the staff, who are always on hand to pour you a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. A glass of wine and a game drive are also good bedfellows, particularly after a successful afternoon of spotting a pride

of lions sprawled on one of the many rocky outcrops that rise from the plains in this part of the Serengeti. A toast to the completion of Ehlane brings good luck as we see a lone leopard stalking the dusk on our way back to camp. It is not often that one gets to see a dream come true in such intricate detail as the realisation of Nas’ vision for Ehlane Plains. But perhaps more impressive than the camp itself is the beautiful feeling of “umoja” (unity) shown by all the staff at

Nasikia Camps. “Nasikia” means “I hear” or “I feel” in Swahili, and that is just what a trip to these camps is all about – being part of a family, of hearing its stories and those of the Serengeti, of falling in love with Tanzania, and of feeling a sense of those outstretched wings – not to hide this experience from the world, but rather to share it with more people, more members of the family. For more information, please visit www.nasikiacamps.com.

Arusha Coffee Lodge The town of Arusha is the main gateway to the Serengeti’s Northern Circuit, and there is no better place to stay before you head off on your adventure than Arusha Coffee Lodge. As the name would suggest, the hotel – which has 12 Plantation Suites and 18 Plantation Rooms – is situated in a coffee estate. So you can expect lovely green surroundings and great coffee – in the Bistro, the Jikoni coffee shop, or in your room. You can also shop for souvenirs at Shanga, a workshop and gift store which employs disabled artisans who make everything from glass and fabric work to paintings. www.elewanacollection.com

THE PREFERRED ACCESS TO SOUTHERN AFRICA Namport

The wheels of change are sweeping through the ports and shipping industry. With around 80 % of global trade being sea-borne and 90 % of Africa’s imports and exports conducted by sea, the ocean has indeed become the focus of attention worldwide. Text & Images © Namport The opportunities presented by the ocean, known as the “blue economy”, hold much promise for Namport in particular, and for Namibia in general. Operating in a country with limited internal expansion opportunities and a small domestic market, it is well known that the country has to look beyond its borders for future development possibilities. The stable political environment in Namibia continues to attract foreign direct investment, and the country is gearing itself to capitalise on every opportunity that presents itself. GEARED FOR LONG-TERM GROWTH Strategically situated to offer direct access to principal shipping routes, Namport plays a significant role in facilitating global and regional trade. During the past two decades, Namport has made great strides in growing in size and significance from a national port to a key role player in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Currently under construction at the Port of Walvis Bay, the New Container Terminal Project is a mega-project that will add 750,000 TEUs (unit of cargo capacity) per annum to the current container capacity. The terminal is scheduled for commissioning in 2019. The first phase of the northern development, located 5 km north of the current port of Walvis Bay, is also currently underway. This development will form an important part of the Namibian Logistics Hub, which will position Walvis Bay as a major gateway to landlocked countries in the SADC region. These two expansion projects are set to further increase Namport’s relevance in regional trade, and enable the country

80/

to compete as a logistics hub for regional and international trade. THE FUTURE IS CHANGING Ports in other countries in southern and western Africa are also expanding their facilities at a rapid pace, and planning major developments linking up to trans-African corridors by rail or road. As more mega vessels are being built for the major shipping lines, there is an urgent need for regional ports to cater for larger container vessels. For Namport to remain relevant, we need to gain an advantage by having suitable

infrastructure for these larger vessels at our ports without delay. Namport is already considering various infrastructural and technical changes to accommodate larger container vessels at the port of Walvis Bay, as well as extending the main quay at the port of Lüderitz to accommodate two container vessels at the same time. Africa’s young and growing population are the consumers of tomorrow who will increase demand for sophisticated imported goods, and develop products for export. Please visit www.namport.com.na for more information.

The Rise of SMART CITIES Some of South Africa’s biggest mixed-use developments are evolving into “smart cities” by embracing the latest technology available.

Text: Supplied Images © Supplied & iStockphoto.com

Beyond the new urbanism trend – where all daily requirements are within easy reach in walkable precincts – new developments are targeting millennial investors with “smart” features that make a smart city. Think charging stations for electric cars, precinct-wide Wi-Fi and fibre to the home, significantly enhanced 24-hour security, and assistance in your home for a range of emergencies – at the push of a button. This is the future of development. WHAT ARE MILLENNIAL BUYERS LOOKING FOR? “Millennials expect to create a better future, using the collaborative power of digital technology,” says social commentator Mal Fletcher.

“Technology is an integral accompaniment to new urbanism, as it holds the desirable characteristics of walkable precincts, where residential and office space are combined with gyms, hotels, and a wide variety of upmarket cocktail bars and restaurants,” Nicholas Stopforth, Managing Director of Amdec Property Development, explains. Increasingly, people want to live, work and play in the same place – a place where they can easily and safely walk to their office, home, restaurant or another amenity. This concept is a mixed-use precinct. When combined with the latest in technology, it becomes a smart city. And while a smart city has all the latest technological security and lifestyle benefits, these are designed into the

development so are largely unseen. You won’t find high-rise tower blocks with unsightly satellite dishes adorning the façade. Instead, imagine buildings that offer green design, green spaces, and pedestrianised roads, yet harken back to a feel of traditional, communal village life where all your daily needs are within walking distance. It might sound contradictory, but it’s not. Stopforth explains that new developments must offer a range of features to suit the ever-changing trends and demands of modern living. Developers need to expand the range of features that come with this community-driven lifestyle to include precinct-wide wireless internet, the latest in access control, panic buttons, as well as medical and security assistance

on instant standby. The Melrose Arch precinct even has license plate recognition, to ensure increased security for residents and businesses. Amdec Property Developments is the group behind South Africa’s best practice in mixed-use precinct design, including Melrose Arch, which is the fastest selling large-scale development in the country with sales and reservations topping R1 billion since its launch in October 2017. The planned R10 billion Harbour Arch on Cape Town’s foreshore, due to open in August 2019, is modelled on the global trend for walkable precincts such as Darling Harbour in Sydney and Canary Wharf in London. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT As proof of the desirability of smart cities, Melrose Arch’s latest residential development, One on Whiteley, is already 75 % sold out. Residents will benefit from all the precinct’s sophisticated technology systems, including fibre internet, backup generators, license plate recognition, electric car charging stations, and recycling facilities. But more than just focussing on technology, smart cities are focused on sustainability. And in South Africa, these mixed-use, new urbanist precincts are certainly driving the sustainability trend. The

84/

world over, developers are under pressure to drastically minimise water usage and incorporate eco-friendly technologies that will benefit the planet in the longterm. For example, Amdec’s green building initiatives include refuse recycling, watersaving devices, low-energy LED lighting, and rainwater harvesting. These will be core features of the Harbour Arch precinct. With water scarcity being the new normal for Cape Town, the developers were required to implement water-wise strategies from the ground up. This has resulted in a shift towards water-conscious design and planning – like rainwater and greywater harvesting,

dual-flush plumbing systems, and water storage facilities. The company will also be investigating the viability of installing an on-site desalination plant to take advantage of the abundant ground water available in the foreshore area. “There is huge benefit in executing water-saving measures at the construction stage, rather than retro-fitting. Not only is it better to have systems in place at the start, but it saves money in the long run,” Stopforth says. “Ultimately, we need to reduce our impact. A smart development needs to be smart about sustaining our future.”

Books Must Read

The Boy From the Wild By Peter Meyer & Graham Spence The Boy From the Wild is the extraordinary story of Peter Meyer’s beloved father, James Meyer, and his love for the African wilderness. The book also gives a delightfully detailed account of Peter’s childhood growing up in the Karkloof Valley Nature Reserve, a hidden wilderness gem situated in the hilly countryside of KwaZulu-Natal. From frightening encounters with rhinos to coming face-to-face with snakes – resulting in two snake bites – Peter brilliantly narrates the memories of his childhood. The Boy From the Wild is a gripping tale of remarkable people fearlessly living out their ambitions with honesty, vigour and courage. It also is a poignant story of a granite-strong bond between a father and son. For your own taste of the beauty of the Karkloof area, book a stay at Karkloof Safari Villas. For more information, visit www.karkloofsafarivillas.com.

Mutts the Book By Emma O’Brien Award-winning photographer Emma O’Brien brings the stories of shelter dogs to life with Mutts the Book. This book, which captures the quirky characters, gut-wrenching experiences, hilarious antics, and heart-warming doggy smiles of rescue dogs, is a must-have for any animal lover. While it certainly puts the spotlight on the growing number of rescue dogs in South Africa and the world at large, Mutts is far more than just a beautiful coffee-table book. Proceeds from the book support local rescue organisations Sandton SPCA and CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare), while the book itself also aims to help people rethink the idea of “mutts” themselves. The constant demand for pure-bred dogs has led to an increase in puppy mills as well as an increase in mixed-breed dogs who are not deemed to be pure enough. Despite the popularity of pure-breds, countless studies show that mixed-breed species are stronger, more resilient, and far less likely to fall ill from the effects of over-breeding and congenital conditions. Mutts the Book is available from www.emmaobrien.photography and selected Exclusive Books branches.

O’s Little Guide to the Big Questions By The Editors of O Magazine O’s Little Guide to the Big Questions is a collection of thought-provoking essays on the wisdom to be gleaned from asking (and answering) some of life’s biggest questions: What matters most? What is my purpose? When is the right time to make a change? The editors at O have combed through the magazine’s extensive archives to assemble this collection of motivating pieces from great writers and celebrated thinkers. The book offers guidance and inspiration to anyone feeling lost or in need of a reset. Best of all, it does so in an approachable way without any of the smug sanctimony often found in “self-help” books.

Every month we will introduce a few members of our SA Express family, because by getting to know them, you become part of the SA Express family too. Text & Image © Supplied

Khutso Tsheoga Cabin Crew Member Length of Service With SA Express: 16 months Tell us more about yourself. I would describe myself as reserved, but once you get to know me, I’m very friendly and interesting. I love cooking, reading, and spending time with family. What is your favourite part of your job? I love the flexibility of my job, the opportunity to meet new people every day, and the fact that I don’t work with the same people on a daily basis either. Last but not least, I appreciate the privilege of getting paid to travel. What do you find most challenging about your job? Being on standby because you never know when you will get called out. What do you like about working for SA Express? My colleagues are the best part of working for SA Express. They make the long flights seem short because they create a pleasant working environment. What would people find surprising about your job? That we don’t do international flights outside of Africa – SA Express is a regional airline. Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters on board? One incident comes to mind – when a passenger handed me a dirty nappy to throw away for her while I was busy with the food service!

Special services Special Meals Passengers with special dietary requirements are provided for through the following special meals: kosher, halal, Muslim, Hindu, low-fat and vegetarian meals. Orders for special meals should be placed at the time of making flight reservations. The airline requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to departure in order to assist with confirmation of requests. Only available on selected flights. Passengers requiring special attention Requirements for unaccompanied minors (passengers under the age of 12 years) or passengers requiring wheelchairs should be stated at the time of making the reservation. Owing to the size of the cabins on our aircraft types, the airline is not in a position to carry stretcher passengers or incubators. Cabin baggage SA Express will accept one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding a total dimension of 115cm and 7kg in weight. For safety reasons, cabin baggage must fit into approved stowage spaces: either the overhead luggage bin or under the seat. Owing to limited storage space in the aircraft cabin, cabin baggage may be placed in the Skycheck at the aircraft for hold stowage. Skycheck This is the airline’s special hand-luggage facility that assists with in-flight comfort, speedy boarding and disembarking. When boarding one of our flights, simply place any hand luggage that will not be required during the flight on to the Skycheck

cart at the boarding steps of the aircraft. Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Baggage liability Valuable items such as cameras and accessories, computers – including laptops and notebooks – mobile telephones, perfumes, aftershaves, colognes, legal and company documents and legal tender – including cash, credit cards and cheques – bullion, leather jackets, all types of jewellery and any other items with a value in excess of R400 must be removed from either checked-in or Skycheck baggage as the airline is not liable for loss or damage to these items. Verified baggage claims are settled on the basis adopted by IATA (International Airlines Transport Association): payment of US$20 per 1kg of checkedin luggage, to a maximum of 20kg ($400) We Fly For You SA Express Airways prides itself on aiming to offer incomparable service standards. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. SA Express proudly launched its new brand on 2 December 2009 at OR Tambo International Airport. The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. The new proposition “We Fly for You” is set to position SA Express as a premier intra-regional African brand. The main objective of the re-brand is to ensure that SA Express is distinctive yet still aligned to the country’s mainline carrier. SA Express’s unique positioning as an airline that

provides a bespoke, personalised travel experience was the rationale behind the proposition “We Fly for You”. The new brand mark is in line with the symbol and colours of the national flag, encouraging national pride. The new brand will be applied to all brand touch-points throughout the operation as well as the staff uniform. Awards SA Express has won the AFRAA Regional Airline of the Year Award at the end of 2009, and the Allied and Aviation Business Corporate Award. Our airline was also the recipient of the Annual Airline Reliability Award from Bombardier at the end of 2007. Other previous awards include the International Star Quality Award, which indicates our commitment to service excellence, while our prominence as one of the top 500 best managed companies is proof of our success as a business. Onboard service The airline’s onboard service is unique and offers passengers a variety of meals or snacks. The airline pioneered its unique meal-box concept, and meal choices are frequently updated and designed using balanced food criteria: appearance, taste and nutritional value. Passengers can also enjoy a wine and malt service on specified flights as well as refreshments on all flights. Light snacks will be served on selected flights. Our customers can expect a safe, comfortable, quality air-travel experience, with the added benefits of frequency, reliability, on-time departures and unmatched value for money.

We fly for you About us SA Express is a domestic and regional, passenger and cargo carrier which was established on 24th April 1994. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. With our consistent and seamless service, our customers can be assured of stellar customer service that will exceed their expectations. Passenger Letters Dear SA Express I was recently on a flight from East London to Durban, and the stellar service by one of your cabin crew members, Bronwyn, deserves a special mention. In an era where good customer service appears to have fallen by the wayside, it was refreshing to note Bronwyn going the extra mile to assist and serve the passengers on flight SA1306. Bronwyn made the effort to engage in friendly banter with all of the passengers she served, and even seemed to know the regular travellers on that route. Her smile and good humour were really infectious and made the flight that much more pleasant. I sincerely hope that the management of SA Express have already spotted these positive qualities, and that she is on the path to being developed for bigger and better things within the group. Bronwyn’s poise, charm, grace and professionalism should be held up as the Utopian standard that other cabin crew members should aspire to. Well done, Bronwyn, it was an absolute privilege flying with you. Regards, Tessa Brennan Congratulations to Tessa Brennan who wrote our winning letter this month, and walks away with a Samsonite Flux 55 cm spinner suitcase valued at R2,699.

Dear all, I would like to express my appreciation for the support we received from your co-worker (we think her name was Faith) in your OR Tambo ticket office when she transferred our booking and tickets from 19th to 20th March (flight SA1701 to Walvis Bay) – since we had missed the flight on the 19th due to inclement weather conditions at Heathrow Airport which caused more than two-hour delays. We are especially grateful for your support as we were desperate to travel and arrive in Walvis Bay as soon as possible, as my wife had lost her mom the previous week and we were anxious to join the rest of the family. Thank you again for the support and for getting us onto the next available flight. With kind regards, Rolf von Ascheraden

Do You Have Something to Say? Let us know what is on your mind by sending an email to customercare@flyexpress.aero. Letters may be edited, shortened or translated from their original language.

The writer of the winning letter in the June edition of Indwe will receive a Samsonite Flux 55 cm spinner suitcase valued at R2,699.
