November 2017 marks my sixth month at the helm of the airline and as I reflect on our progress, as well as the hurdles we still face, I am in awe of the “never-saydie” attitude of the SA Express Team. The team gave me a warm welcome when I started, and through our daily interactions, I am increasingly aware that my colleagues are my “everyday heroes”. The industry in which we operate is both highly competitive and stressful, and this team that I am proud to lead always seems to find a way to dig even deeper. Their unrelenting spirit and pursuit of excellence humbles me.

November being “Quality Month”, I saw it fit to celebrate our organisation’s most important resource: its people. I am a firm believer in the adage by Neil Beyersdorf: “An organisation’s journey to excellence begins once it ceases to sacrifice quality for speed.”

I know that the re-envisioned SA Express is possible only through the consistent hard work and dedication of its employees.

In my endeavours to navigate our obstacles, I am continuously reminded of Clem Sunter’s book The Mind of a Fox and how it describes the survival of the fittest.

This book references approaches to life in general by categorising people’s leadership styles to that of a hedgehog or fox. A fox, as you know, is judicious and perceptive, enabling it to discern the best approach for its survival. The industry and time in which we operate requires that we apply that level of agility to our dayto-day operations if we are to remain relevant in the future. Our ability to transform relies on a few factors, namely: Adapting to new technology; creating equitable opportunities; the type of thinking that is happening at a leadership level; and, most importantly, consideration for people – both staff and passengers.

have an integral role to play in advancing aviation. At SA Express we have the enviable advantage of being the development hub and talent pipeline for aviation in South Africa. This means that we need to be at the forefront of training talent today for the future aviation business. We have a mandate to unearth the talent which will be utilised to fill the gap we envision in the future.

The true test is how we, in the industry, best utilise our talent. Recently SA Express, the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA), and Status Aviation collaborated to fill a future gap in skills development and to empower aviation talent. A pilot programme was developed with the aim of equipping pilots with management and leadership competencies within the aviation industry.

I am proud to say that we now have our first graduates of the Bachelor of Commence in Aviation, First Officer Christopher Jooste and First Officer Lerato Chappie.

These pilots from formerly disadvantaged communities overcame great challenges to achieve first their dreams of being pilots, and now to hold the first ever BCom Aviation qualification in South Africa.

When you are introduced to First Officer Jooste – in one of our articles this month – you will understand the meaning of true grit, the power of positive thinking, and of seizing the opportunity of a lifetime within the lifetime of the opportunity.

First Officer Christopher Jooste is but one of many of my colleagues at SA Express who exemplifies true grit.

Quality people make a quality organisation and I am proud to be a member of the “never-say-die” team.

True Grit The Christopher Jooste Story

Imagine if you were a young boy playing barefoot in the sunshine, the backdrop, one of the rolling green hills unique to the KwaZulu-Natal landscape. Looking to the sky you see an aeroplane cut through the clouds and think to yourself, “One day that will be me flying that plane”.

This is the story of First Officer Christopher Jooste, a pilot at SA Express.

This is also a story about a journey of perseverance, passion and true grit, as well as of achieving one’s goals and dreams.

The legacy of South Africa’s political past is one of gross inequality and restricted access to education, resources and opportunities. Yet, in true South African fashion, people continue to strive to achieve what was once thought to be impossible. Christopher is one such South African.

A CHILDHOOD DREAM Growing up in Newlands East, Durban, Christopher always dreamt of being a pilot.

After school he read towards a Diploma in Travel and Tourism, and then moved to Johannesburg to begin his quest to one day become a pilot.

Eighteen years ago, Christopher was in the first group of male cabin crew trained and recruited to SA Express – he was determined to fly any which way he could.

An inquisitive person by nature, Chris soon made friends with the SA Express pilots and asked questions while on the flight deck. This only served to strengthen his determination to become a pilot.

CAMPAIGNING FOR CADETS In 2005, he began a five-year letter writing campaign to the SA Express board of directors and management at the time, including then CEO, Siza Nzimela. He asked that SA Express start a Cadet Pilot programme, similar to that of SAA. He penned a research study on the upcoming shortage of pilots that would happen by

2015; a case study highlighting the extreme shortage of black pilots and the need for immediate action.

In 2010, he heard that SA Express was recruiting their first candidates for the brand new Cadet Pilot Programme. The first intake was of unemployed pilots who already had their commercial licenses, and so he did not qualify for it. It was with the next intake of cadets for the MACH I programme – for aspiring pilots without previous experience or licenses – that that he was finally able to apply, and was called in for an interview. This was the opportunity he had been waiting for.

CHALLENGES FACED & OVERCOME There were substantial challenges ahead though. Among them was the fact is that he did not have Matric Maths and had a family of his own to support when participating in the programme meant that he would have to give up his cabin crew salary to pursue his dream. At the age 30, he had to prepare his wife and three children for

the substantial changes that the next 24 months would bring.

Determination won out though, as Christopher completed a two year course in 18 months.

Currently Christopher has 2,600 flying hours, an Airline’s Transport Pilot’s License (ATPL) and has just completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Aviation, with distinction.

The first of its kind in South Africa, the BCOM Aviation course – a collaboration between SA Express and the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) – is a leadership programme aimed at developing elite pilots with the highest chance of success in the aviation industry while also equipping them with managerial competencies. The degree is customised for the pilot profession and Christopher

Jooste is a proud holder of this qualification.

When asked what drove him to success, Chris is clear – he believes in South Africa, the South African public and SA Express Airways and he wants to be part of positive change. “I believe that this is my opportunity to help the airline soar,” he says. “I do not plan on running away or immigrating, I want to give back to my country and my airline.” Chris also credits his extended family for his success as their support meant he could focus on his dream.

The motto that gives Chris the courage to reach for his dreams is simple: CEIVE – If you can conceive it and perceive it, you can receive it! Envision your better place and believe it can happen.

FREE STATE NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN, BLOEMFONTEIN Spanning a valley, dry watercourses and a wetland area between dolerite koppies, Free State National Botanical Garden in Bloem’s northern suburbs is a lovely place to seek a bit of tranquillity. Covering 70 hectares, the garden is home to about 400 species of plants, predominantly from the Free State, Northern Cape and Lesotho. There are splashes of colour all year round, from the clivias in spring and summer to the aloes and wild pomegranates in winter. You’ll best be able to appreciate the variety of the flora by walking either of the Motshetshe or Garden View trails, each of which is about 2 km long. www.sanbi.org MAKARANGA, KLOOF With 30 acres of garden to explore, Makaranga in misty Kloof near Durban is popular with the locals, yet you might find that you have much of it to yourself thanks to its clever design and densely vegetated sections. WALTER SISULU BOTANICAL GARDEN, ROODEPOORT Possibly the one place in Joburg where time actually slows down, Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden is a remarkable place.

Its 300 hectares are home to more than 600 naturally occurring plant species, 220 bird species and even jackal and small antelope. The garden is most famous for the Witpoortjie Falls, and a pair of Verreaux’s (black) eagles that nest in the Roodekrans Ridge alongside the falls – be sure to bring your binoculars! www.sanbi.org HAROLD PORTER NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN, BETTY’S BAY You’ll want to bring your camera, because the views of mountains and sea at Harold Porter National Botanical Garden not far from Cape Town are dramatic. With 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos garden and 190.5 hectares of pristine natural fynbos, there’s plenty of plant life to see, including proteas, ericas and restios galore, not to mention irises, daisies and orchids. GARDEN ROUTE BOTANICAL GARDEN, GEORGE Bordering mountain forests and the Outeniqua Nature Reserve, with the Outeniqua Mountains as a backdrop, Garden Route Botanical Garden has a nice bit of drama about it. The garden aims to conserve, promote and research the rich but threatened floral diversity of the coastal region from Gouritz River to Van Staden’s River and the Little Karoo, and is home to the Southern Cape Herbarium, which has been collecting and surveying the region’s indigenous vegetation for the past 17 years.

If you fancy a spot of walking there are trails ranging from 10-minute walks to full day hikes. www.botanicalgarden.org.za HANTAM NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN, NIEUWOUDTVILLE Covering a vast 6,000 hectares, Hantam National Botanical Garden in the Northern Cape is as much a nature reserve as a botanical garden. The obvious option is to visit in spring when the flower season makes the landscape seem to burst with colour, though things get pretty colourful in autumn too when the Brunsvigia flower species bloom. Regardless of the time of year, on one of those clear Karoo days, it’s worth finding a spot by yourself to take in the garden’s stillness and arid beauty. DURBAN BOTANIC GARDENS, DURBAN Africa’s oldest surviving botanical garden – established in 1849 – covers 15 hectares at the junction where the city and suburbs meet. The garden has extensive collections of cycads, ferns, orchards and bromeliads, and a fantastic variety of trees, including some simply massive figs. The banyan tree in particular is pretty staggering. Paths criss-cross the garden, and a large pond is home to lovely birdlife – you can expect to see pelican, pygmy kingfisher, thickbilled weaver and spoonbill. A must-see is the Wood’s Cycad, brought to the garden in 1903. It is no surprise that Naledi Moleo chose the adjective “bright” when asked what word best describes her. With her warm smile and positive outlook, as well as her determination and drive, she has made her name synonymous with success in many spheres of the entertainment industry.

From TV producer and presenter, to award-nominated radio show host and entrepreneur, Moleo is an inspirational woman who has garnered major success.

And it seems there is no stopping this dynamic 31-year-old who wants to “brighten the lives of others”. Indwe recently caught up with Moleo for a chat.

Indwe: In what ways do you think your upbringing shaped you as a person?

Naledi Moleo (NM): I grew up in so many difference places – Alexandra Township, then Honeydew in Roodepoort, and then Rustenburg. I had a very simple upbringing, raised by my grandmother who worked incredibly hard as a domestic worker to give me everything I needed. We knew we didn’t have much, but we never focused too much on that. My upbringing was full of fun, family, and loads of love and optimism. It’s this optimistic mind-set that has shaped my outlook on life – that, regardless of how tough things get, there is always something to celebrate. If you’re willing to put in the work, there is always something to look forward to.

Indwe: You were extremely successful in the television industry, having hosted Make Your Move and being a producer and presenter on Youth Expression. Currently you’re a talk show host on SAfm. What do you prefer, television or radio?

NM: I still struggle with this question and I suppose it’s because the answer to it changes so often. I loved my time on television, and radio is so different that there really is no comparison. In radio, you must be quick on your feet and there is no amount of make-up that can hide a bad attitude or a bad day. Radio is just so honest. No frills! Loads of freedom but massive responsibility. That said, if the lights and cameras called me back, I wouldn’t say no.

Indwe: What were some of the important lessons you learned from your years in television that have helped your career moving forward?

NM: Television taught me how to find my place in the world. The fame is fun but it doesn’t change your life. The thing that really brings about growth is the ability to figure out what you want to do with that

platform. Thanks to television and my talk show, Youth Expression and then Make Your Move, I realised that I want to be that voice that reminds every viewer and listener of their power to improve their own lives and the lives of others. Television taught me that what you show to others of yourself can have great impact on how they view themselves.

Indwe: What do you attribute to the great success of your radio show, The Mash Up? NM: The Mash Up is a platform for poets to share their work. The show is my passion project. After only four months on air we received a Liberty Radio Award nomination. The show is a success because it allows musicians an

opportunity to show off their versatility, which is liberating for many of them. I truly believe that there aren’t enough public spaces for poets to share their work with the country. Poetry has the power to make us interrogate what is wrong with our country and to celebrate what is right.

Artists say the things we are all afraid to say, but statements that need to be made.

The success of this show belongs to Vusi Mahlasela, Pops Mohamed, Vangi Gantsho, Makhafula Vilakazi, Napo Masheane, Lebo Mashile, and all the other artists that have been generous with their craft and given themselves over to a process where they are asked to be vulnerable, and to create on the spot for us all to hear on live radio.

Indwe: What do you love most about your career?

NM: I am fortunate enough to have interacted with all sorts of people. I have interviewed people that had served time for murder, and victims of violence and abuse. I have met leaders of industries and governments from all over the world. I have even interviewed a man in Diepsloot who runs a shelter for abused women. All these different personalities have given me a rounded view of the world. I know now that we are all the same. Our backgrounds and pockets may be different, but where we go in life is all

about what decisions we make about the next step we take.

Indwe: Tell us more about some of the other projects and initiatives you’re involved in.

NM: Le Laka Media is working on a few projects. We provide facilitation and content compilation for government and private sector conferences and seminars.

All too often people attend conferences and the dialogues never really give the attendees a way forward after the last speaker has spoken. My business has helped organisations really focus their work and report back on what has been achieved. I also want to tell African stories from the rest of the continent, but you will just have to wait to hear more about that!

Indwe: What are some of the challenges you’ve had to overcome in your career?

NM: Well, first let’s agree that all these challenges are lessons that we should in fact celebrate. I will say that I have had to work incredibly hard to be recognised as a credible voice as the youngest presenter on SAfm. I can’t complain about that because at some point we all have to prove ourselves. As an entrepreneur, I have faced many rejections of projects I have been quite passionate about, but I have also found opportunities that have succeeded.

The point is to roll with the punches and to keep on moving forward.

Indwe: What characteristics do you attribute your success to?

NM: I am a risk taker. I push myself beyond my comfort zone. People think being a talk show host means you’re a wonderful speaker, but I try my utmost to listen more than I talk. Curiosity is also one of the greatest attributes to have – I always want to know more.

Indwe: You are passionate about nation building. What are some of the things that ordinary people can do every day to have a positive effect on South Africa?

NM: I am going to touch on perspective again. If South Africans interacted more across colour lines and social standing, we would understand each other so much more and then get a lot more done for our country. We need to listen more to each other.

Indwe: What advice do you have for the youth of South Africa who would love to follow in your footsteps?

NM: Take a chance. Hunt for that opportunity. Get out of your shell and chase. You will never regret it.

GARDEN ROUTE NATIONAL PARK www.sanparks.org Established by amalgamating the Tsitsikamma and Wilderness National Parks and a few other bits and bobs, Garden Route National Park is a fairly spread out affair, with its sections running all the way from Wilderness to Storms River and a fair distance inland too. It combines large chunks of gorgeous indigenous forest, long stretches of coastline, fynbos, lakes and waterways – but to take it all in, you’ll want to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trails.

Each of the park’s three main sections – Wilderness, Knysna Lakes and Tsitsikamma – has multi-day trails as well as short day walks, some coastal, some forested, some a mix of both. It’s here you’ll find the famous Otter Trail, a five-day, 42 km trail between the Storms River mouth and Nature’s Valley. The waiting list for the Otter Trail is considerable, so if you’re impatient, you could consider the Outeniqua Trail, which can be attempted as a series of day walks over seven days while overnighting in various rustic cabins along the way.

If hiking just isn’t your thing, there are picnic sites, famous trees, a selfdriving 4x4 route, mountain biking and fantastic birding.

This lovely reserve spans a staggering 38,000 hectares encompassing the mountain ranges that fall between the coast and the semi-arid Klein Karoo.

Walking trails crisscross the reserve, and San paintings can be found on rock faces throughout the reserve (please treat these with respect by not touching them). Proteas and ericas cover the hillsides, and when they bloom in spring the mountains seem to come alive. GAMKABERG NATURE RESERVE www.capenature.co.za About 30 km west of Oudtshoorn, Gamkaberg is a rugged, craggy area marked by deep ravines and lovely rock formations, and is home to four biomes: fynbos, succulent Karoo, subtropical thicket, and evergreen forest. Proclaimed in 1976 to protect the Cape mountain zebra (there were just five left in the area at the time), the reserve is also home to honey badgers, klipspringers, red hartebeest and eland, not to mention lovely birdlife. The reserve has comfortable self-catering, safari-style tents pitched on decks, as well as rustic huts, and if you stay in the reserve you’ll have access to its phenomenal rock climbing – there’s a comprehensive guidebook available for download or at the reserve office which details the various routes.

Two 4x4 trails, and a series of short walks and multi-day hikes round out the main attractions, making this an adventure lover’s dream destination.

ROBBERG NATURE RESERVE www.capenature.co.za Jutting into the sea, Robberg Nature Reserve is a windswept, rocky peninsula that helps to make Plettenberg Bay an actual bay. About 4 km in length, the shoreline is home to loads of Cape Fur seals, and depending on the time of year you’re likely to get good dolphin and whale sightings, particularly from the higher viewpoints. You may also spot blue duikers – South Africa’s smallest antelope – which hide in the thickets. There are three circular routes ranging from a 30-minute stroll to

a strenuous 9.2 km trail. Whichever trail you take, don’t stand near the cliffs, particularly if the wind is strong – for obvious reasons.

KEURBOOMS RIVER NATURE RESERVE www.capenature.co.za Just a few kilometres north of Robberg Nature Reserve as the crow flies, Keurbooms River Nature Reserve couldn’t be more different.

With its lovely river gorge, kloofs and thick indigenous forest, it’s a striking counterpoint to its sister reserve. The forest is home to beautiful examples of the western keurboom, Cape beech, stinkwood and Outeniqua yellowwood, and common bird species include the Knysna loerie, giant kingfisher and Knysna woodpecker. Undoubtedly the best way to experience the reserve is by undertaking the two-day canoe trail, overnighting in a small cabin tucked into the forest with a 180-degree view of the Tsitsikamma Mountains and the river gorge.

BAVIAANSKLOOF www.baviaans.co.za South Africa’s third-largest protected area, the Baviaanskloof is nothing short of spectacular. The R332 is the only road through the Baviaanskloof.

The road follows the Baviaanskloof River, with the eponymous range of mountains to the north and the Kouga Mountains to the south. Make sure you have your camera at the ready, because the rock formations, folded mountains, sweeping vistas and twisted rock formations will have your Instagram feed clogged with comments. You’ll want to traverse it in a 4x4 – if there’s any rain, a 4x2 may be found wanting – and don’t be afraid to take your time. Accommodation options include converted caves, campsites, guest farms and lodges, and the hiking and mountain biking trails could fill many return trips.

Far from being merely an environmental issue for policy makers and environmentalists to grapple with, working to minimise climate change through managing environmental footprints is fast becoming a business imperative that every forward-thinking leader has to consider and plan for.

“The rising global average temperature is associated with widespread changes in weather patterns,” notes the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“Scientific studies indicate that extreme weather events such as heat waves and large storms are likely to become more frequent or more intense with humaninduced climate change.”

Today, environmental sustainability is a hot-button issue. Leaders are recognising that geopolitical stability and economic growth are intrinsically linked to sound environmental practices – and that ignoring scary statistics is grossly irresponsible. From an industry and private sector point of view, business leaders are under increasing pressure to ensure that they follow sound environmental best practices – or risk severe reputational and financial damage in the long term.

THE RISE OF SUSTAINABILITY Yet there is a hugely positive side to the environmental sustainability question for businesses, argues Liesl de Wet, sustainability champion at supply chain specialist Barloworld Logistics.

“Sustainable business practices are going to become as important as the creation of shareholder returns, and whilst this may impact operations in the short term, the implementation of environmentally sound processes will provide incalculable benefits in the long term,” De Wet explains. “As a result, [environmental] sustainability is moving from a nice-to-have to a core strategy.”

Indeed, as both local and international businesses begin to recognise the importance of putting sustainability strategies in place, opportunities are emerging for businesses to achieve cost savings, spur innovation, gain consumer support and boost bottom line growth.

HOME-GROWN SOLUTIONS Locally, in an initiative to reduce carbon emissions and road congestion, for example, Transnet Freight Rail and Barloworld Logistics have partnered to shift cargo from road to rail. This will ultimately lead to reduced carbon emissions as well as greater efficiencies for all the supply chain stakeholders.

“Without doubt, local companies are increasingly paying close attention to how they can put sustainability practices in place that now go beyond the factory gate,” De Wet says. “They are understanding that

they need to look at their impact across the supply chain, and that rigorous measurements should be put in place to drive the process.”

As awareness grows, however, companies will need guidance around which measurements to put in place, how to benchmark progress, and how to ensure that sustainability becomes woven into the fabric of everyday business operations.

“You cannot manage or measure what you don’t know or understand,” De Wet notes. “Businesses need to physically measure their footprint, and the tools and best practices are certainly available to do so right now.”

COLLABORATION IS KEY The first step, says De Wet, is to begin to benchmark your entire supply chain.

As a business, it’s critical to really understand what your key energy drivers are and where the hot spots lie. In most cases, transportation is a huge element and leaves the greatest footprint.

“It’s important that businesses work with their partners to look at the entire supply chain, and not just sections of it,” she advises. “There are so many players and stakeholders within a supply chain, so it is imperative that everyone is aligned and working towards a single goal.”

The major challenge, she notes, is that sustainability is not a “cut-andpaste” exercise, and one needs to work with supply-chain specialists who can innovate and tailor-make solutions to specific scenarios.

Admittedly, the volatile and uncertain economic environment is making it very difficult for businesses to invest in new technology and expertise to drive the sustainability agenda – yet there are many “small wins” that can translate into cost savings. Simply using LED lighting in a warehouse, for example, can immediately reduce overhead costs.

SUSTAINABILITY SCORECARD Looking ahead, De Wet says that putting in place a sustainability scorecard will be instrumental in helping local businesses achieve sustainability, and to spur internal innovation.

“We really need such a scorecard – with clear targets in place that businesses can work towards with suppliers in a collaborative manner,” she argues. “Supply chain managers themselves need to innovate around key solutions, and it all has to be put down in writing.”

Notably, sustainability is already becoming a feature in integrated reports, which South African companies are beginning to embrace and use as a key benchmark for overall progress.

“We cannot move into the future without incorporating this into our businesses,” De Wet says. “There are massive opportunities here to innovate within businesses, supply chains, and even to establish entirely new industries connected to sustainability.”

Ramaphosa reflects on the legacy bequeathed him by his father, Samuel Ramaphosa, who had to leave his cattle herd in Venda behind to find work as a migrant worker in Johannesburg. Life in the city was tough and demanding, weakening Samuel’s links with his ancestral origins and resulting in the loss of his herd.

The love of cattle runs deep in South Africans and Ramaphosa is doing more than restoring his father’s loss, he is instilling a new pride for South Africans with

these remarkable cattle. A few years ago the Nguni reigned supreme, but now the attention and focus has moved to the regal Ankole with their impressive horns.

World acclaimed photographer Daniel Naudé first met and fell in love with Ankole cattle while photographing cattle around the world. His prints, of the Ankole in particular, have been bought by the likes of Paul Allen of Microsoft and Mary Slack of the Oppenheimer family.

The field of natural science without ‘natural science collections’ is very much like a human being without a back-bone.

The Natural Science Collections Facility or NSCF is one of 13 projects being implemented by the Department of Science & Technology as part of the South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap. Because South Africa is a “megadiverse” country, its biodiversity is of great scientific interest and the natural science collections are considered as important research infrastructure both nationally and internationally. These collections are housed in vast storerooms out of the public eye, and their value is largely unknown beyond the pool of researchers who work on and care for them.

South Africa’s more than 100 000 species, many of which play an important role in ecosystems that sustain life, or that have economic, food security or health benefits. The collections enable the identification of biological material, including agricultural pests and disease vectors, and the collection data are critical for informing decisions about areas that are important for conservation, and for understanding past and future global change impacts on biodiversity. Modern technologies are creating exciting opportunities for innovative research using the collections and data.

The NSCF is a network of museums, universities and research institutes across South Africa that together hold more than 30 million preserved specimens such as animal skins, skeletons, pinned insects, birds eggs, snail shells, dried plants, tissue and DNA samples and fossils collected over almost 200 years and covering 500 million years of life. These specimens represent

The benefit of this is not only long-term sustainability, but a reduction in upfront infrastructure capital costs.

By harnessing new technologies, water usage can be reduced and alternative sources accessed. Rainwater harvesting, greywater systems and wastewater treatment are all excellent sources of secondary quality water. Situated at the coast, desalination is a particularly viable option for the supply of drinking water to the estate.

Work has started on the installation of a modular desalination plant which will produce up to 12 megalitres of clear water daily at full capacity. Solar energy from photovoltaic panels will assist in powering the plant, which will produce

desalinated water during sunlight hours and store it in a water reservoir. This water will then be used by homeowners and replenished during the day.

Energy plans also include the use of technologies which reduce consumption and harness alternative sources. Solutions such as smart lighting, heating and cooling, smart metering, and utilising solar and gas power as alternatives to electricity.

Waste will be managed responsibly through implementing a hierarchy system.

The hierarchy will start with source-based separation, and move down through the recovery of easily recyclable materials, to composting, thermal treatment of waste, and finally to anaerobic digestion.

Schwab calls himself a “pragmatic optimist” in projecting the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Each “tipping point” megatrend brings possible negative or positive impacts. A+ EDUCATION The School Turnaround Foundation

A good education can mean the difference between a purpose-driven life and one where you can barely provide enough food to feed your family. With 80 % of South African schools often described as dysfunctional and underperforming, what can be done to overcome this ongoing crisis in education? A local NGO, called the School Turnaround Foundation (STF), is providing innovative solutions which transform dysfunctional and underperforming schools into functional schools and, ultimately, into schools of excellence.

Despite good intentions, South Africa continues to propagate a twotier educational system characterised by vast disparities between black and white educational opportunities – one system for children of the rich, and another for the children of the urban and rural poor.

The School Turnaround Methodology (STM) incorporates a deep understanding of these contexts.

CORE PRINCIPLES The solutions are based on a School Turnaround Methodology designed by Dr Muavia Gallie, who spent seven years developing the systems change approach in our schools. The methodology is rooted in a core belief that all learners were created to be successful and, within this belief, STF provides the educational steps and processes to achieve this positive goal. Consequently, all their learners are set to achieve above 50 % in all subjects, including mathematics and science, as well as to achieve a Bachelors pass.

This is linked to their second core principle: “For learners to be successful, adults must change.� If teachers believe every learner can be successful, then their approach to teaching and learning will

change. This change in teaching requires that all teachers engage in daily lesson planning to ensure that learning takes place.

The NGO strongly believes that teaching without any learning is a waste of time.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS Over the past five years, their model has been successfully piloted in Limpopo, Gauteng and the Western Cape. The STF approach is unique and challenges all role-players to do things differently, for example: 1) Every school must use a minimum of 170 days for teaching and learning. This requires every teacher to have a lesson plan for every day. This is critical as research has shown that our schools teach, on average,

less than 100 days of the year!

2) A no homework policy. In many schools the implementation of homework is often based on a few assumptions: that all learners have a place called home; that there is a place to work; that there is time to work (there are numerous child-led homes where no adult is present); that there is someone to help; and that every teacher will provide feedback on all homework tasks.

The STF asserts that classroom time must provide the greatest learning opportunity for all children.

3) Teachers are encouraged to teach with equity in mind and not equality.

Equality is based on a one-size-fits-all approach which, the NGO states, does not work. Rather, the teacher must take the diverse needs of learners into consideration and teach accordingly.

4) I ndividual target-setting approach.

Every learner has a target in every subject and these targets are set to provide the learner with a pathway to achieving their dreams.

TEACHING RESOURCES The STF approach incorporates data-driven decision-making into processes that would ordinarily be limited by the capacity of the human resources involved. Accordingly, Dr Gallie developed software called the School Intelligence System (SISOPEN) to manage traditional aspects of learning – such as attendance, lesson planning and timetabling – in a transparent and proactive manner.

The program also helps learners discover, visualise and make real progress towards their dreams, as well as tackling social and emotional learning aspects by helping learners to achieve realistic, individualised improvement in their performance.

And the students respond accordingly, as these comments from learners show: • “I want to make my parents proud of me. I want to become a doctor.

Being at Zwelethemba High has changed my life. I am very proud of myself.”

• “Zwelethemba High has changed me in a positive way and taught me about discipline and the importance of education.”

POSITIVE RESULTS STF’s success has been demonstrated in six high schools in Somerset West near Cape Town where Grade 12 pass rates have increased by up to 21 % in less than a year. STF has also been directly involved in the creation of Worcester’s Zwelethemba High School which opened its doors in January 2017. In less than six months, the number of learners achieving at the lowest performance level at the school (level 1: 0-29 %) has been reduced by 40 %, and those achieving at the top performance level (level 7: 80-100 %) has increased by more than 65 %.

Our youth deserve a future that is very different from our past. They deserve a chance to realise their dreams.

Malgré de bonnes intentions, l’Afrique du Sud continue de promouvoir un système éducatif à deux vitesses qui est caractérisé par d’énormes écarts entre l’accès à l’éducation des enfants blancs et celui des enfants noirs – un système pour les enfants de riches et un autre pour les enfants pauvres des zones urbaines et rurales. La School Turnaround Methodology (STM) intègre une compréhension approfondie de ces contextes.

PRINCIPES FONDAMENTAUX Les solutions reposent sur la « Méthodologie pour le redressement des écoles » conçue par le Dr Muavia Gallie qui a passé 7 ans à développer une approche pour la transformation du système utilisé dans les écoles. La méthodologie repose sur la conviction profonde que tous les élèves ont le même potentiel de réussir et, se basant sur cette certitude, la STF propose des mesures d’ordre éducatif et des processus d’apprentissage qui ont pour but d’achever cet objectif tangible. Par conséquent l’objectif visé est que tous leurs élèves obtiennent plus de 50 % dans toutes les matières, ceci incluant les maths et les sciences, ainsi qu’au Bac. Ceci est lié à leur second principe fondamental : « Pour aider les élèves à réussir, les adultes doivent adopter de nouveaux comportements. » Si les enseignants croient en la réussite de chaque élève, leur approche de l’enseignement et de l’éducation changera.

LIGNES DIRECTRICES POUR LA RÉUSSITE Au cours des cinq dernières années, le projet a été mis à l’essai avec succès dans les régions du Limpopo, du Gauteng et du Cape occidental. L’approche de la STF est unique et met tous les intervenants au défi de faire les choses de manière différente.

Par exemple : 1) Chaque école doit assurer enseignement et instruction pour un minimum de 170 jours par an.

Cela requiert que chaque enseignant planifie ses leçons chaque jour. Ceci est essentiel car la recherche indique que les écoles n’enseignent en moyenne que 100 jours par an !

3) On encourage les enseignants à enseigner de manière équitable.

L’enseignant doit prendre en compte les besoins variés des élèves et enseigner en conséquence.

4) Chaque élève a un objectif dans chaque matière, et ces objectifs sont formulés pour lui donner une chance d’achever ses rêves.

RESSOURCES PÉDAGOGIQUES L’approche de la STF incorpore la prise de décisions axée sur des données à des processus qui seraient habituellement

limités par la capacité restreinte des ressources humaines engagées. Par conséquent, Dr Gallie a développé un logiciel du nom de School Intelligence System (SISOPEN) (ou Système de renseignements pour les écoles) pour que la gestion d’aspects traditionnels de l’enseignement comme l’assiduité, la planification des leçons et les emplois du temps se fasse de manière transparente et proactive.

Le programme aide également les élèves à découvrir et à visualiser leurs rêves ainsi qu’à faire de réels progrès pour concrétiser ces derniers ; il les encourage aussi à affronter les aspects sociaux et émotionnels de l’apprentissage en les aidant à obtenir des améliorations de performance réalisables et personnalisés.

BILAN POSITIF Le succès de la STF a été démontré dans six lycées de la région de Somerset West dans lesquels le taux de réussite au Bac a augmenté de 21 % en un an.

La STF as aussi participé directement à la création de la Zwelethemba High School (lycée) qui a ouvert ses portes en Janvier 2017 à Worcester. En moins de six moins le nombre d’élèves ayant obtenu les résultats les plus bas (niveau 1 : 0 – 29 %) a été réduit de 40 %, alors que le nombre d’élèves ayant achevé les meilleurs résultats (niveau 7 : 80 – 100 %) a augmenté de 65 %.

I met with Bruce in his gallery, situated in the centre of bustling Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands, to find out more about his journey as a sculptor.

THE EARLY DAYS Bruce developed an early passion for the South African wilderness through his childhood spent in the Bushveld. He became a conservationist and professional game ranger, working at the famous private game reserves of Londolozi and Singita in the South African Bushveld.

Summing up the start of his artistic journey, Bruce says: “I was in the Sabi Sands when I started sculpting. Although I was extremely busy, I needed an outlet for my creativity. Until then, I’d never done an art class in my life. I’d seen some sculptures in a gallery in Johannesburg and I told my then girlfriend – who is now my wife – that I’d love to do that. So I went to see my friend who is a sculptor in the Natal Midlands. And he said to me: ‘Don’t waste your time.’ So, of course, I had to try it! I sculpted a piece and took it to the foundry to get cast but it was too expensive. Luckily, he liked the piece so much he said he would do three for me for free, and I then sold them in the shop – and that was the start . . .”

The 20 years he spent in the wilderness have given Bruce invaluable insight into the subjects he holds so dear. After spending time in the Sabi Sands area, he lived on a

private conservation project in the Eastern Cape where he restored Hopewell, a former beef and sheep ranch, to its original wilderness state. Bruce continued to work in the wildlife industry while also sculpting, but six years ago he realised the eco wildlife industry had become too taxing, and he made the decision to move back to his family. “Since then I have been sculpting full time,” he says.

CAPTURING A FEELING When it comes to his artistic style, Bruce focuses less on strict anatomy in his sculptures, but more on capturing the deeper meaning of animal behaviour and what he has observed during his lifetime.

“For me it’s more about capturing the movement, the power, the presence, or the plight of an animal. I don’t think my style has changed. I think it’s been pretty consistent. Each piece I sculpt to a point where I feel it’s talking to me.”

One of the key tools that Bruce uses within the first stages of creating his works is photography, which has always been one of his passions. From his earliest days in the bush, he used his camera to document and study the landscape and animals.

In his sculptures, he “freezes” the movement of what he anticipates will happen within the wild. “As you start to sculpt, you don’t just look at the animal anymore. You look at how it moves, how

its muscles are reacting. I study anatomy quite a lot. And I have been very fortunate in that I have hand-raised some animals. I raised two cheetah and released them into the bush. Also a caracal.”

Bruce says his time spent in the wild is why his sculptures are so authentic. “And that has come from spending thousands of hours with animals. When it comes to actually understanding the animals, you have to spend time with them.”

CAST IN BRONZE All of Bruce’s sculptures are cast in bronze by specialist foundries using the “lost wax” method. Bruce explains that the process is lengthy, so it is extremely costly. The first step in this process involves making a latex mould of the original clay sculpture at his studio. The latex mould is then used to create a wax replica of the clay original which has wax pipes attached to it to form tubes. These will allow the molten bronze into the mould during the pouring.

The completed wax mould is then coated with refractory clay and allowed to dry. The refractory mould is then heated to allow the wax to drain out. The mould is then heated again, this time to a temperature close to the melting point of bronze, and the metal

is poured into the mould and allowed to cool. The refractory mould is then chipped away to reveal the new bronze sculpture, which – as a final step – is coated with beeswax and polished.

All of the pieces he creates are close to Bruce’s heart, but there are a few which are extra special, such as the Monumental Leopard. “I absolutely love leopard. They are the most incredible creatures.” But then there are also some of his smaller pieces, such as the series of sunbirds, which he adores. “It’s also about the finesse.”

PAYING IT FORWARD Bruce is acutely aware of the increasing pressure from man on the habitat of the animals he sculpts. “If my art can inspire a greater empathy and appreciation for these creatures, I will have contributed something valuable to our relationship with nature.”

Last year Bruce’s works raised nearly R15 million for conservation. A large portion of this amount came from a mammoth lion sculpture which was commissioned by Ceawlin Thynn, Viscount Weymouth of the Longleat family estate, whom Bruce met during one of his trips to the UK. The piece was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary

of Longleat Safari Park. Though Bruce has sculpted numerous life-size and even larger pieces, this monumental lion is, to date, his biggest yet.

Off the back of the enormous success of the Longleat venture, Bruce was invited to auction the lion at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala event in St Tropez, where the piece achieved an auction bid of $1 million. The funds raised were donated

by Bruce to the foundation, which focuses on various environmental projects.

Bruce has also recently started presenting talks on his experiences. “One of the big messages I try to get out is that we can all make a difference. Everybody thinks conservation is someone else’s problem.

It’s not someone else’s problem. Every single one of us can make a difference.

We arrive naked into this world, and we leave naked. You can’t take anything with you. What legacy do you leave behind? I think the legacy I want to leave behind is of someone who made a positive difference through art.”

Bruce Little’s bronze sculptures has been exhibited internationally for the last 11 years on five continents as limited editions and private commissions. His latest exhibition will be held in London at the Mall Galleries from 7th to 12th November 2017. Tribes Restaurant is a must-try. Styled to provide an upmarket, authentically African experience, the restaurant is filled with natural woods and accents of orange and the menu boasts a range of hearty meal options.

If, however, you have more time to allow for a leisurely dinner, Aurelia’s Restaurant – located at the hotel – serves up an expansive à la carte dinner menu.

UP, UP IN THE SKY A hot-air balloon ride over the dunes offers another perspective of just how vast the Namib Desert really is. There’s so much to learn about the formation of dunes, and about life in this desert system which forms part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. From your hot-air balloon, you can oftentimes see a lone oryx scaling a dune, or an ostrich wandering in search of something to eat.

Back at camp you can grab a bike (solarpowered electric bikes have just been introduced) and enjoy a ride around the Kulala Reserve – privacy is guaranteed in this concession. Do the Innocents Survive a Corporate Scandal?

When your company is caught up in a scandal, it can turn your entire life upside down – even if you were not involved. How do you as an employee recover from such a stressful event?

When a corporate scandal is exposed, the focus is on the company – its reaction to the scandal, public opinion of the company, and whether it will survive the scandal. But very little is said about the immediate emotional impact of the scandal on the “innocents” within the company, or the future impact on their careers.

In recent times South Africa has had its fair share of company scandals, with the latest being when audit firm KPMG admitted that some of the work it did for, amongst others, SARS, “fell considerably short of KPMG’s standards”. As a consequence of its public announcement, several senior leaders of the firm have left, with the company being threatened with legal action. There are even rumours that it may be blacklisted, which means it will no longer be able to get contracts from certain stakeholders in future.

THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL Conroy Fourie, independent coach, says once the “insidious impact of the unacceptable behaviour” reaches breaking point and all is exposed, people who felt secure suddenly find their world crashing down around them.

“The fallout from the public exposure of untrustworthy, perceived immoral behaviour triggers an ending. The mystical spell has been shattered. People experience shock, and may still briefly flirt with denial,” Fourie says.

Emotionally, people become numb at this stage. Then anger sets in. There is explicit or implied blame, and employees may feel that “others have done this to us”. They may start blaming themselves – even beating themselves up – for not seeing it coming, for not speaking up, or for not trying to leave when the first rumours started.

“Distrust may become pervasive. By now the stress responses have impacted the affected people to such an extent that their ability to remain creative in their jobs have been compromised. They may become immobilised by fear.”

Fourie, who calls himself a change and transition catalyst, says the employees then feel they have lost support from within the company, and if friends and family start asking difficult questions, the innocents may feel that they themselves are under attack.

Professor Leon van Vuuren, executive business and professional ethics director at The Ethics Institute, says the real danger is when people become despondent and the despondency turns into apathy. It may even escalate to the point where affected employees sabotage the company. “When people reach that stage, they feel entitled to freebies, like stealing time and property such as stationery from the company. They feel the company owes them,” he says.

THE NEUTRAL ZONE People may even experience depression and anxiety about their future. Eventually, they reach the point that Fourie calls the “neutral zone”.

In the neutral zone, people realise they need support. “Make use of whatever support structures your organisation has in place, such as confidential employee wellness services,” he advises those who are caught up in such a situation. Fourie says any organisation of worth will make it an absolute priority to shore up employee support structures to an even higher level during this time of organisational trauma. Employees in organisations such as KPMG are likely to be people who consider themselves to be resourceful and self-reliant.

THE NEW BEGINNING Fourie advises people not to make rash decisions. “Get yourself back on track in performing your job tasks as professionally as possible, even if you may have begun the process of divorcing yourself from the organisation to find another avenue for the expression of your professional abilities.”

Academics at the Harvard Business School recently did a comprehensive study on the effect on executives from scandal-riddled companies and how they are perceived in the job market. The research indicated that executives from such companies pay a penalty in the job market, even if there was clearly no wrongdoing on their part.

“Overall, these executives are paid nearly 4 % less than their peers.

Given that initial compensation in a job strongly affects future compensation, the difference can become truly significant over a career,” the study found.

The team noted in their article – The Scandal Effect published by Harvard Business Review – that stigma, which may be fair or unfair, undermines a person’s credibility in the social role they are attempting to play. The academics looked at “organisational stigma”, which occurs when a company’s actions are widely seen as fundamentally flawed or immoral. People who have worked for a tainted company will find it quite difficult to shake the stigma associated with their former employer.

The Harvard research team found that considerations such as the culture of the country where the scandal occurred, the role, seniority and gender, as well as the level of education of the innocents, and the industry culture all play a part in people’s abilities to bounce back.

The Harvard study refers to three steps to bounce back from a corporate scandal: • Forthrightness: Truth is the best friend of the innocent.

•R eputation: Draw on your own reputation and legitimacy from people who believe in you.

•R ehab: Take a rehab job that you can do with one hand tied behind your back – the purpose is to create a persuasive story to compete with the scandal narrative.

Fourie says remaining leaders should be role models and an inspiration to others in the aftermath of a scandal. “If you assess the situation and believe the company can recover, and you want to remain, commit to being part of the solution. If you cannot, and want to engage in bad talk, it is time to move on.”

Van Vuuren warns that companies with fear-based cultures are “sitting ducks” for ethical violations. Writing policies that allow and encourage people to speak up and not to hide mistakes may take a month, but establishing a trust-based culture takes years.

Van Vuuren says it is vital for those remaining in the company to get immediate, honest communication about how the fall-out will affect them. They want to see transparent management consequences, such as the bad apples being named and shamed, and they want an immediate and sincere apology. “If a company does not react swiftly to calm the waters, the good ones will leave immediately,” Van Vuuren says.

You’ve made it in life and the time has come for you to pick a more classappropriate car. But the time has also arrived for you to ditch whatever fourcylinder options you may have considered before, and go for the ultimate prize – the effortless Mercedes-AMG E43.

In this scenario, you leave behind the E350, Merc’s top turbo-four option that, if we’re honest, betrays the idea of driving a Mercedes E-Class somewhat, given that its engine strains just a tad too much under a relentless right foot.

The E43 delivers the smooth power and effortless acceleration that one expects from an E-Class. Combined with a delectable nine-speed automatic gear box and a rear-biased (to the tune of 69 %) 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, the result is sublime, if not inspirational.

SOPHISTICATED STYLING Looking at the E43, it is clear that the exterior design is the product of restraint – as it should be with this class of car.

It was a stroke of genius to opt for the slicker silhouette of the standard E-Class, rather than the bulging hulk of the E63’s bonnet and GT-like grille design. At the rear too, the bellicose diffuser on the bigger AMG makes way for a subtler rear bumper design on the E43.

Our test car carried matt brown wood trim, with subtle aluminium accents bringing enough brightness to the dark cabin. Like any Merc, the interior is ludicrously customisable, although the contemporary finish in our test unit gave it a stately, yet sporty feel, without being overbearing.

The front seats were optionally heated and cooled as well, and the Burmester 3D surround sound system – blasting 1,450 watts of flawless sound through 23 speakers – was a welcome addition to the cockpit experience.

Also included in our test car was Mercedes’ entire suite of driving automation and active safety technologies, a surround view system, active high beams, and keyless entry. AMG’s Active Multi-contour front seats completed the premium luxury picture.

MODE OF CHOICE Like most other sporty Mercs there are four driving modes – Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ – as well as a driver-set individual option. Eco – which sets stop/ start to be more aggressive and uses a glide function to, effectively, declutch the transmission – just doesn’t belong in a six-cylinder. More so in this six-cylinder.

Comfort mode is likely to be the go-to setting for most drivers. Gutsier drivers would either opt for Sport or Sport+, or skip the former altogether and go for the full AMG experience that the + affords. Ultimately, that is why you turned your back on four-pot-power to begin with, no?

The individual setting allows the driver to configure engine, transmission, and suspension settings, but most drivers will probably not fiddle with this option too much, and are far more likely to flick between Comfort and Sport+ as circumstances dictate. Apart from tighter steering, switching to Sport+ mode instantly readies the big sedan for action by raising the engine speed, contracting gearbox shift-times and ratios, and

considerably stiffening the suspension. It also does what most AMG fans want from their cars – it opens up the exhaust . . .

DELECTABLE DRIVE At 4,942 mm in length, and weighing in at 1,880 kg, the E43 is a big car. However, despite its bulk, it feels nimble and sporty, well balanced and purposeful.

It does remind you of its rear-wheel bias every so often when hard cornering in Sport+ mode, but for the most part, and thanks in part to the AMG-tuned setup, the big Merc eagerly chews up the bends.

Steering response is direct enough in the upper driving modes but decidedly vague in Comfort, and even worse in Eco. Throttle response is neither violent nor too controlled. Instead, it is somewhere inbetween, in that elusive sweet spot where

the E43 simply goes when your right foot meets the carpet.

FINAL SAY While the adrenaline-fueled will yearn for the fire-breathing Mercedes-AMG E63, the price premium – somewhere north of R700,000 above the E43’s asking – will likely serve as a sobering reminder that you’re not in the CEO’s chair just yet. But, if it’ll make you feel any better, in our opinion the price variance just isn’t warranted – unless the V8-powered monster is what you desire most in life.

But if not, the E43 is sufficiently engaging, borrowing just enough from its eightcylinder stablemate to keep things satisfying, blending ample power with the distinctive luxury driving experience that E-Class buyers have come to expect.

Powerstar Launches

New FT Range Bob Wang, CEO of Everstar Industries, is excited about the company’s new venture, which debuted in September at the Automechanika Exhibition in Johannesburg. This follows a joint venture whereby Everstar Industries has taken on board the Foton medium truck range and rebranded it under its top brand, Powerstar.

The new Powerstar FT range will be built at the Pietermaritzburg plant in KwaZulu-Natal with the same high-quality technology as is used for the current Powerstar range, including excellent aftermarket parts and service. The range is powered primarily by Cummins engines feeding torque through ZF transmissions.

Since 2014, Everstar Industries has focused on offering transport solutions across the construction equipment/vehicle spectrum, from Shantui bulldozers, frontend loaders, and forklifts to heavy and extra-heavy commercial trucks (Powerstar and Powerland truck tractors, tippers and mixers) and colossal off-road, heavy-duty rigid dump trucks.

Our aftersales activities offer the same benefit to our customers, with parts that are readily available, with mostly immediate or overnight supply. We apply that very same superior standard to aftersales support, no matter which brand.

is the speed with which we respond to customer needs,” Wang emphasises.

The Everstar Industries footprint has been primarily in the Southern Africa region – Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The company now plans to explore even more African countries with its wider offering, including Malawi, the DRC and Zambia.

Further news on the product side, is that the homologation of the new Cummins Powerstar V3 line haul truck has been completed. Alongside this is the introduction of an optional AMT transmission on the V3, and also the option of a Cummins or Weichai engine. A lightweight 6X4 rigid truck tractor will also arrive later this year.

Passenger Letters To SA Express This year, I have travelled a few times on SA Express to George and Bloemfontein, both before and after Mr Xaba took over as the acting CEO. When I read the interview with Mr Xaba in Indwe magazine, I was immediately inspired by him and his vision for the airline.

I love the S.O.A.R. concept. Being a leader in my work environment, your strategies have also helped me in my role as a leader, and I am inspired to do more to reach greater heights. Looking after the people you work with is the first step to succeed, whether it is in a business or military (my work environment) setting.

Seeing the positive changes in your crew members shows that your strategies are yielding good results. I have to say that now I look forward to flying with SA Express, as the service one receives is amazing. Your crew members are really seeing your vision. Indeed, you are soaring to new heights.

I also loved the article on Bonang Mohale. We need more of these articles that really connect to us and challenge us to give back, or rather to inspire young South African adults to strive to become entrepreneurs and employers, not employees.
