The world-famous beaches of the Atlantic coast, from Hout Bay to Melkbosstrand, are served by a number of MyCiTi routes. In the central city there are art galleries, museums and markets galore to explore, as well as many restaurants, cafes and bars inspired by local and global culture and cuisine. Whether it is live music you are after, or a quiet time in the natural surroundings of the Company’s Gardens or the stunning Urban Park in Green Point, MyCiTi will get you there and back. MyCiTi buses operate up to 18 hours a day, depending on the route, so you can plan a long day out and about.

Visit some of Cape Town’s most popular hotspots from the comfort of a MyCiTi bus. Find out more about MyCiTi’s routes and services by visiting the user-friendly website, www.myciti.org.za. There’s a helpful trip planner that will give you directions to stops and stations, list your transfer points, give you suggested times

and even tell you your fare for the various journeys. There’s also a call centre, the Transport Information Centre, with helpful operators available 24 hours a day every day of the week.

Get a myconnect card MyCiTi does not accept cash on the buses. All passengers aged four and over need their own myconnect card to travel. Get these for R30 at MyCiTi station kiosks and selected retailers and load with money to pay for your travel. Fares are based on the

distance you travel, with free transfers at stops and stations within a period of 45 minutes. Visitors on a budget should note that fares are more expensive in the morning and afternoon peak periods (06:45 – 08:00 and 16:15 – 17:30 on weekdays). Outside of these times you pay the off-peak Saver rate. You have two options to load money on your card, Standard or Mover. Load any amount and pay the Standard fare and also make purchases of up to R200 at retailers accepting debit and credit cards, or load Mover

At both stations you can get a single-trip card (R85) for journeys including the Airport service. If you are arriving in Cape Town for a visit, and you

Hello South Africa‌ please meet Zandile Ndlela and Ditebogo Koenaite... ...your future Captains!

We as the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), and custodian of civil aviation safety and security in this country, are excited to meet these future Captains because we know that the world is facing a shortage of expert aviation skills. We also know that South Africa needs to produce 6,200 pilots and 200 aircraft engineers by the year 2021 in order to cater for the expansion of the aviation industry; which doubles every fifteen years. That is the reason why in 2015 the SACAA spent over R3 million on the training of 27 young and aspiring aviators.

So, some day in the future Zandile Ndlela and Ditebogo Koenaite or their peers will be welcoming you on-board, courtesy of the SACAA.

Transport Month In South Africa, October is Transport Month. It brings attention to all modes of transportation, and particularly the intrinsic role transport has to play in the domestic economy, as well as in securing South Africa’s place in the global economy. Key to any economic growth is the ability to offer efficient transport infrastructure and policies that are critical to economic development, both globally and nationally. Located as it is at the bottom end of the African community, the distance between South Africa and its global trading partners has made the need to provide a world class transport infrastructure central to the state’s developmental focus. The level of spending on airports in the last five years – thanks partly to the World Cup in 2010 as well as to offer seamless travel to all travellers – has been of great benefit to the airline. Transport’s contribution to economic development includes the following: • Network effects: South African Express offers key linkages between secondary and primary markets, enabling the airline play a principle role in opening secondary economies. • Performance improvements: Reducing cost and time for existing passenger and freight movements increases transport’s contribution to economic growth. It is noteworthy that, although air transport is regarded as an “exotic” means of transport, the airline continuously seeks to attract more people to experience this mode of transport. • Reliability: By improving on-time performance and reducing loss and damage – thus reducing economic drag – SA Express continuously looks at improving customer interaction and interface. The airline continues to operate in a highly fragmented and competitive sector, where both domestic and international airlines are competing for scarce resources. This, in turn, affects the demographics of the workforce. The airline has continued to train both pilots and technicians and,

12 Indwe

as a result, is regarded as the most transformed airline in the country with regard to previously disadvantaged individuals, with a focus on young black female candidates. This focus on transformation is aligned to the Government’s transformation agenda. It is the view of its Board and management that SA Express should build a workforce that will ensure sustainability, as well as the ability of our airline to compete in the global arena. You may also be aware that the development of the aviation industry in South Africa is faced with a plethora of challenges, among which is a shortage of critical skills, which has continued to remain acute among previously disadvantaged individuals. It is due to this focus that we have the MACH 1, MACH 2 and Learnership programmes – I encourage you to visit www.flyexpress.aero for more information. In the November edition of Indwe we will feature cadets and technicians who have benefited from this developmental focus. We have also recently introduced new routes, the newest being the commencement last month of the Johannesburg to Mafikeng route which effectively connects Gauteng with the North West province. Now, tourist and business travellers no longer have to drive from Johannesburg to Sun City, they can just take one of our flights there. October is also an important month for the Free State Province, as the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) will be held in Bloemfontein from 8th to 10th October. It is one of the largest cultural events on the continent and, as SA Express is the anchor airline at Bram Fischer International Airport, we will be the airline partner of this festival. This is a threeyear relationship and the airline continues to pursue relationships with all the municipalities in which we proudly operate. I encourage you to take a flight on SA Express to Bloemfontein to enjoy this internationally acclaimed showcase of African Culture. Visit www.macufe.co.za for more information. Sincerely, Inati Ntshanga

The evening will be hosted by wine expert, Cathy Marston, and beer guru, Lucy Corne, who will share their respective expertise on wine and beer before each course. The evening costs R450 per person. To make a booking contact +27 21 434 2351 or email harveys@winchester.co.za.

No More Podgy Pooches Obesity is the biggest health problem facing South African pets. Many owners believe a “little extra padding” is not serious, but overweight pets have shorter lives, are at higher risk of diseases like arthritis, urinary conditions, heart disease and cancer, and are ultimately less happy. Rather than putting your pet at the risk of obesity-related diseases, ask your vet for a professional opinion. During National Obesity Week (15th to 19th October) many practices are offering free weight assessments. Should your pet benefit from losing some weight, expert help is available. Over 350 vet practices (in South Africa and Namibia) run weight loss clinics, as well as the highly effective Hill’s Pet Slimmer programme which has helped thousands of cats and dogs to regain their optimum weight. For a list of participating practices and to be inspired by the ten finalists in the 2015 Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year competition, visit www.petslimmer.co.za.

Terrifyingly Delicious

Early Detection Saves Lives Recently, PinkDrive, a non-profit breast cancer community carer, made history by launching their third Mobile Mammography unit. Mammo3 has a separate horse and trailer system, which means more space for the state of the art mammography equipment. Like Mammo2, this truck also has facilities for gynaecology services, thus enabling Mammo3 to offer a full, all-inclusive women’s health offering. PinkDrive believes that mammography screening should be available to all women, and so they are determined to build more mobile units with the aim of providing much needed women’s health care services across South Africa. All PinkDrive units travel to semi-urban and urban areas around South Africa with the aim of providing disadvantaged communities access to women’s health services. These services include free education on women’s health, free mammograms, free Pap smears, free clinical examinations and information on how to do breast self-examinations.

Bites Decadence Defined Since 1824, The Macallan name has been a guarantee of unrivalled craftsmanship and quality. And now there is a new whisky bearing this name, a single malt born from this unwavering endeavour: Macallan Rare Cask. Rare Cask is a truly individual Macallan whisky. It has been crafted from whiskies selected from 16 individual cask profiles – the most ever used in a single Macallan whisky. Owing to the number of cask types involved and the length of time it takes to identify them, Rare Cask takes longer to create than any other The Macallan. Rare Cask has been crafted from Spanish and American sherry seasoned oak casks, a high proportion of them being first fill, including some of the most precious and scarce casks. Collectively, these factors have given rise to an exquisite whisky with a splendidly rich and resonant hue, an unmistakably woody taste, and a rewarding complexity of flavour. The Macallan Rare Cask will be available at R2,999.

Truffles for Africa Woodford Truffles South Africa has recently confirmed the discovery of the first Black Perigord Truffle in the Western Cape on the farm Altima, one of the properties within the Anthonij Rupert Wyne portfolio. After six years of the required nurturing and care by the managers at Altima, their Truffler, aka Clyde the Jack Russel, recently sniffed out the 200 g truffle. Woodford Truffles South Africa’s dog trainers have been on the prowl for the elusive truffle for the past two years. Italian truffle guru, Prof Alessandra Zambonelli, predicted the imminent appearance of truffles in the area after a thorough on-site root inspection of the orchard trees earlier this year, before it was discovered by Clyde’s clever nose in July. The orchard will now be monitored on a weekly basis until the end of the harvest season. This will be done by Clyde and his furry companions, Bonnie and Zippy. South Africa’s first black diamond truffle was unearthed in Mpumalanga in January this year.

We Are the Champions The Champion Trees of South Africa Text & Images ©Enrico & Erna Liebenberg

The recently published coffee table book Champion Trees of South Africa provides beautiful, full-colour photographs, text and accurate GPS co-ordinates of all of South Africa’s 75 Champion Trees, as well as the latest seven nominees, making this the perfect book for tree-lovers, conservationists, and anyone who believes in protecting South Africa’s natural heritage for future generations.

Paul Roos Gymnasium Trees (Stellenbosch) A cluster of very tall lemon-scented gum trees adorns the school grounds of The Paul Roos Gymnasium and date back to 1885.

The collection of Champion Trees is protected under the National Forests Act of South Africa. Yet no other record, apart from this book, exists with an extensive and complete collection of full-tree photographs of the natural and national tree heritage of this country, which deserves to be preserved for future generations to admire. When Enrico and Erna Liebenberg left their corporate careers in 2009, they had no intention of venturing into the world of professional photography. They wanted to follow their passion of travelling the continent, and only

subsequently expanded this passion to photographing the natural life they encountered. By coincidence they were drawn into the world of trees, discovering that South Africa has the only project on the continent that records and protects very large and very old trees by legislation. At first, they started photographing these giants – some of which are as tall as 80 m and others that have a canopy spread of over 65 m – simply to offer the custodian of the Champion Tree project a photographic record of the trees. They soon realised, however, that information about

Tsitsikamma Big Tree (Garden Route National Park) The Tsitsikamma Big Tree is said to be the most visited tree in the country. More than 80,000 people walk the winding forest boardwalk each year to see this Outeniqua yellowwood.

Marriott’s Lane (Pietermaritzburg) Sir Matthew Nathan, the last Governor of Natal, suggested a lane of London plane trees be planted in the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens in 1908 where it now stretches more than 200 m.

the Champions was eroding with each passing year, and the possibility existed that the entire record of these trees could be lost within a few years. At this point, their photography turned serious: They retraced a number of routes and steps with a view of obtaining publication-quality images. In two years, they travelled nearly 40,000 km, visiting some of the country’s most remote corners to bring readers the material presented here and, in a small way, to preserve a relatively unknown section of South Africa’s natural heritage. Join Enrico and Erna Liebenberg on an armchair journey through South Africa and be captivated by the imagery of the sometimes gargantuan and sometimes familiar sights of these amazing trees. ‘We Are the Champions’ is published by HPH Publishing and is available from all good book stores nationwide.

Commonwealth Plantation (Haernertsburg) Three varieties of gum trees were planted on an eleven hectare plot in 1914. In 1939 the Commonwealth Forestry Commission held its annual conference in South Africa and was so impressed with the forest that it was dedicated to the Commonwealth Forestry Commission.

On Foot Exploration Rhino Walking Safaris Text: Nicky Furniss Images Š Isibindi Africa & Nicky Furniss

In the southern section of the Kruger National Park, Rhino Walking Safaris allow you the privilege of experiencing the beauty of the African bush on foot, ensuring a very special game viewing experience.

32 Indwe

Tim woke me up in the middle of the night. Curled up in my sleeping bag with only a shade cloth “tent” between us and the stars, the full moon illuminated the surrounding bush with a soft glow that made it possible to make out the trees and bushes surrounding our little camp. Raised up in the air on wooden platforms, we had an unimpeded view of the water hole. “Look!” he whispered, handing me the binoculars. There, around the waterhole, was a large herd of elephant, possibly 15 in total, shuffling and murmuring, quenching their thirst by the light of the moon. “I couldn’t not wake you up for that!” whispered Tim. And he was right. Watching those majestic animals from our little moonlit tent in the sky was one of the best bush experiences I have ever had. We had walked to the “sleep outs” the previous afternoon. Led in single file by our boisterous and authoritative guide, Bernard, rifle slung nonchalantly over his shoulder, we had strolled through the bush, our overnight packs on our backs and our eyes peeled for animals. Game viewing on foot is a totally different experience from doing so by vehicle. Everything is automatically more immediate, more tangible. The pungent smells of flowering potato bushes, fresh dung, and parched earth create heady aromas that are not whisked away by the wind whipping through an open-top 4x4. There is the satisfying crunch of dead grass under your feet and the opportunity to soak in the relative silence of the bush, with only the odd bird call, the buzz of insects or rustle of leaves to pierce the quiet. On foot, you are also afforded the opportunity to learn the intimate rituals of the bush. Dung and droppings and middens have their own stories to tell about which animals frequent that area, when they last passed by, and which ones are territorial. Paw prints in the sand – pointed out to us regularly by the guides – tell even more stories, and serve as a veritable newspaper gossip

Indwe 33

column of who has been out and about, and with whom. You learn about the trees and plants you walk past, and are able to engage more senses than just sight, as you can stop and touch, crumple leaves in your hand and smell the fresh “green” fragrance they release. It is a slower, more intimate way of interacting with the bush, and while you may not have the luxury of racing in your vehicle to the next reported lion or leopard sighting, you can sidle quietly past munching giraffe, stroll ridiculously close to wildebeest and sneak up – hearts racing – on a pair of rhinos at a watering hole. After three hours of walking through the luminously soft light of the late afternoon, we came to the sleep outs – a structure of raised wooden platforms snuggled into the surrounding bush. Accessed by steep wooden ladders, four sleeping platforms can accommodate eight adults. They are surprisingly comfortable, with camping mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags inside the tents, and with camping chairs outside from which to watch the bush come alive with nocturnal creatures as the sun goes down. Downstairs, on the lower level of platforms, two flushing toilets with basins ensure that you are far from roughing it, while a communal platform features a small kitchen and a fire pit around which to sit, beer in hand, and reminisce about the day’s sightings. While the meat sizzled on the braai, we took turns training the binoculars on the nearby water hole, where the full moon and the thirst-quenching water rewarded us with sightings of elephant, a lone lion, and even a rhino or two. Dinner was a feast of salads and meat, with the added luxuries of an accompanying bottle of wine and Malva pudding for

34 Indwe

dessert – getting back to the bush needn’t mean roughing it! The next morning, we were woken by the sounds of the stirring bush and the delicious wafts of coffee coming from the platform below. Steaming cups were waiting for us, complemented by homemade rusks – a staple in the bush – before we packed up and set off on our walk back to our base at Plains Camp. Once more we read the bush newspaper as we strolled, acquainting ourselves with the many animals who had passed that way before us, from large ellies, right down to little civets and springy scrub hares… all of whom had left their calling cards for us. By mid morning, we walked into Plains Camp, where hot showers and a large brunch were waiting for us, before we retired to our luxury tents for well-earned naps on comfy, soft linen bedecked beds. Afternoons were spent relaxing by the pool, curled up with a good book, or on a chair on the main deck watching the animals nibble grass on the expansive plain in front of the lodge, before lacing up our boots again, for another on foot game viewing experience. After several days of the blissful solitude of Plains Camp, it is still worth spending at least one night at the main lodge, Rhino Post Safari Lodge. Situated about 30 minutes from Plains Camp, its rooms sit perched overlooking a dry riverbed where buffalo come to wallow in the soft sand and nyala tiptoe around the relative safety of the lodge nibbling on grass. Upping the ante slightly on the rooms at Plains Camp, Rhino Post offers the added extras of balconies, tea and coffee making facilities, a wallow-worthy bathtub, and even an outdoor shower – should your modesty allow for the appraising gazes of the nearby buffalo.

On our last morning at Rhino Post, we gave our walk-weary feet a break and hopped on a morning game drive through the Kruger Park. There is something unmistakeably invigorating about early mornings in the bush when the air is still fresh and the day alive with possibility; when early wake up calls and chilly drives are often rewarded – and not just with the requisite Amarula hot chocolate during the mid morning drinks stop. On that particular morning, we were rewarded with our second “write home about” experience of the trip. After spotting the unusual sight of a hyena perched solo on top of a termite mound, we followed him as he padded away, only to have him lead us directly to a particular tree. And what should we spot in the tree, but a spectacular leopard, complete with a freshly killed impala. The hyena had done us the service of leading us directly to her, while she had done us the service of picking a tree close enough to the road to give us the perfect vantage point from which to watch her rearranging and eating her prey. We sat there for a magical 45 minutes, marvelling at our good fortune and in the incredible beauty of the magnificent animal in front of us. There are many reasons why it is good to be South African, but the kind of experiences we had at Rhino Walking Safaris – experiencing the wonder of the bush from every possible angle – is certainly on the top of my list. Border Patrol Things to Consider Before Taking a Cross-Border Holiday Text: 1Life Images © iStockphoto.com

So you’re taking a cross-border holiday and you are all ready to go. Luggage, check. Foreign currency, check. Passport, check. Travel insurance, check! Great, but what about the items that are perhaps not on a “normal” travel check list? These “not so obvious” things could have a massive impact on your life, should something untoward happen while you enjoy your holiday abroad.

Indwe 39

To ensure that your adventure is memorable for all the right reasons, read below to discover the five things that you should also do before heading out of South Africa.

Discuss Your Plans With Your Insurance and Financial Services Providers An important place to start is to alert all of your insurers. This is not only necessary when you are travelling by car and perhaps need to alert your short-term insurer that you plan to cross the border, but it’s also important to alert your long-term insurer for your life and disability cover. While your life insurer may still provide cover for the country you travel to, it is important to let them know that you are travelling. This will help you to understand if your cover will be affected while you are away, or if any premium loadings apply for this period. Should a loading be applicable, it’s important to let your insurer know once you are back from holiday so that this loading will no longer be applied. And then, while discussing your holiday with your insurer, you should evaluate if you have the right cover in place to protect yourself, as well as your family. This is something that should be reviewed regularly, especially if any significant life changes have taken place, as your cover amount may not be as sufficient as when you initially purchased it.

40 Indwe

The Other Important Documentation While your passport and ID book are a must, there are other considerations which depend on the country you are visiting. If you are travelling in your own car across borders, it is important that you make sure that you have certified copies of your vehicle registration papers. If you plan on driving a rental car, your driver’s permit will be required. If you are travelling with medication that requires a medical prescription, try to keep this with you at all times, and fill your prescription before leaving, as the country in which you travel may not be able to supply the medication you may require. Countries have various requirements for documentation before, during and after travelling, so double check and make as many certified copies as possible, as no one wants to be stuck in another country far away from home.

Flight Requirements Flying from one location to the next can be a stressful experience, between making sure your luggage is the correct weight, to ensuring that you have packed your passport and tickets, and avoiding placing any prohibited objects in your hand luggage. To avoid any unforeseen stresses, draw up a check list of what you will need to remember. Start with checking your passport’s expiry date, as most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months after you

travel – not just for the period that you are travelling. In addition, find out if you need vaccinations, malaria pills and so on, before you leave.

Your Emergency Contacts Make sure your emergency contact numbers are saved in more than one place, and that these family and friends have been given your contact details, should they need to reach you (the address of where you will be staying and an alternative contact number is sufficient). A smart idea would be to record and keep these contacts in an indestructible device such as a waterproof key ring capsule.

Back Up Your Technology Make sure that you back up all your important contact numbers, photos and diary entries – as well as all travel related documentation – to an external cloud-based server. This way, if your technology devices are stolen or lost, your information is just a username and password away and is not lost along with the device/s. In addition, by backing up your device, you can remove all private information prior to travelling, which lowers the risk of people accessing this information and content. Travelling can be such a fun time, but do take care of all the things you should do before you leave, and make sure that when you go on holiday, you have everything covered!

Sugar and Spice and All Things Nice Granny Mouse Country House & Spa Text: Nicky Furniss Images Š Granny Mouse Country House & Spa

When it comes to country getaways, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands immediately come to mind, and if you’re looking for cosy hospitality, pampering and indulgent dining, look no further than Granny Mouse.

42 Indwe

Indwe 43

The KwaZulu-Natal Midlands has always had something of a magical feel to it. Pastoral scenes of rolling green hills dotted with wild flowers and large, established trees, under which lowing cows shelter from the midday sun, mixed with the wonderful creativity of the many artists, potters, leather and iron workers and other artisans who have chosen to set up their studios and workshops along the famed Midlands Meander route. In autumn, the Pin Oaks and Liquid Ambers cloak themselves in a blaze of vivid oranges, crimsons and yellows. In winter, the smell of wood smoke fills the air and with it comes the promise of cosy sofas and steaming hot drinks in front of the fire. Spring brings with it the evocative mists that steal in across the fields, adding an ethereal and mysterious quality to the landscape, while summer is a riot of lush green, the picture of abundance and fecundity. I cherished our trips to the Midlands for all of these reasons when I was a child, and allowed the landscape to fuel my imagination. For surely if fairies and dwarves were to choose to live anywhere, it would be here? As would the little woodland creatures from my story books – like little Granny Mouse. Granny Mouse’s Country House was thus a favourite venue. Its little, confusingly intertwined rooms – made cosy thanks to fireplaces, low ceilings, wood accents and tartan sofas – as well as its location, nestled on a little hillside overlooking a curve of the Lions River which sang as it gurgled over its pebbles, seemed the ideal place for a mouse to live. And to entertain, with some of the best cream teas on the Midlands. I didn’t know when I was a child that in fact the country house had been named after “Mouse” Poynton, one half of the husband and wife team who originally built the hotel (and who now run Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, also in the Midlands). But irrespective of the origin of its name, this little B&B had a charm and a warm hospitality that made one want

44 Indwe

to pop in – either for a meal, or to stay a little bit longer. Many years have passed since then, and Granny Mouse is now under new ownership. In the intervening years, the little boutique hotel has grown to include new rooms, a beautifully situated wedding chapel, and a world class spa, but while it has mushroomed across its little hillside and spread under its sheltering pine trees, it has not lost any of its original charm or its “weekend away in the country” appeal. In fact, now, guests can have all the cosiness of a quaint getaway with the added luxury of more spacious rooms, and those little added extras that make for a memorable stay. Our Deluxe Suite offered a lovely little balcony from which to gaze out at the languidly rippling river below, or – for colder days – not one, but two window seats where you could snuggle with a warm blanket and a book, occasionally pausing to gaze out at the green hills of the Caversham Valley beyond. A giant shower made for pleasurable preening, while the even larger bath is perfect for two – with candles and bubble bath provided to add to the romance. Speaking of romance, we spent a misty, cold afternoon curled up in front of our fireplace, drinking champagne and nibbling on chocolate, which is something I think that even granny would approve of! Nothing says “holiday” like a little pampering, and you’re unlikely to get a more pampering experience than at the resident spa. Surrounded by beautifully and meticulously tended gardens, and staffed by lovely and warm staff, the spa feels like a warm cocoon in which to snuggle down in and forget the passing of time for a while. And you needn’t leave your significant other behind when you do so. My partner was only too happy to indulge in the spa’s romantic Honeymoon Package with me. This started out with a heavenly hydro bath, complete with soft lighting, scattered rose petals and, of course, bubbly – of both the

bath and the drink variety. After a luxurious 30 minutes of relaxed wallowing, we were treated to a wonderful hour long massage followed by the ultimate indulgence – an hour long facial consisting of all manner of wonderful smelling potions and lotions. All of this indulgence is bound to inspire you to indulge in a different way, and the cuisine at Granny Mouse is guaranteed to tickle all senses. Tucked away under the thatched eaves of the main house is Eaves fine dining restaurant, where the atmosphere is cosy, the service impeccable and the food superb. There is a choice of an à la carte menu, as well as a five course tasting menu, with an optional wine and bubbly pairing. I highly recommend the latter, which involves a

steady stream of delicious morsels, artfully and beautifully plated, with subtle flavours and modern, unexpected twists. Paired with fine wines, this is truly a culinary journey of note, and one which will leave you planning your next trip back… if only for a repeat gastronomic performance. For those wanting something a little lighter, the Bistro downstairs offers more casual, yet delicious dining. This is also the venue for breakfast, when the early morning sun lights up the room and makes for a cosy atmosphere for sampling the extensive buffet, or opting for one of the tantalising menu options. It is the perfect way to start a day of exploring all that the Midlands has to offer, but we wouldn’t blame you either if you opted instead to relax with granny and burrow away in your luxury mouse’s nest country getaway. The Ladies of the Lake Shayamanzi Houseboat Experience Text: Bernard Hellberg Jr Images © Shayamanzi Luxury Houseboats

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find new places from which to explore South Africa’s exquisite natural beauty, especially so when one wants to combine it with a sporting activity. The Shayamanzi Houseboat experience offers it all – picturesque scenery, luxury, and the chance to snag an elusive tigerfish. World-renowned golfing legend, Jack Niklaus, once remarked: “There are always new places to go fishing. For any fisherman, there’s always a new place, always a new horizon.” True though this may be, finding those places is not always easy in a saturated tourism landscape. That makes our recent discovery of the Shayamanzi Houseboat experience all the more magnificent, as it offers the perfect synthesis of world-class luxury travel and an individually catered living experience, set within the splendid beauty of Northern KwaZulu-Natal. Traversing Lake Jozini (also known as Pongolapoort Dam), Shayamanzi I and Shayamanzi II are by far the best vantage

48 Indwe

points from which one can enjoy the superb wildlife to be seen on the shores of this vast natural expanse. Lake Jozini is located close to the bustling town of Pongola, and is a comfortable, yet brisk drive – on relatively good roads – from either Johannesburg or Durban. Shayamanzi is launched from the jetty at the world-class Jozini Tiger Lodge, where there is ample secure parking and a shuttle that ferries you and your luggage to the shore. Once on board Shayamanzi Houseboat, guests can soak up the stunning scenery of the Lebombo Mountains and Pongola Game Reserve, and either enjoy calm serenity on the water or the thrill of Tiger fishing.

Meaning “to hit the water” in Zulu, the Shayamanzi experience is more than a trip on a boat on a lake. Shayamanzi II’s luxurious cabins, stylish upper deck bar and dining facility is a holiday haven for everyone, whether you are one of Mr Niklaus’ fishermen visiting the lake for the abundant fishing opportunities, or not. If attracting “tigers” on the fly is your game, then Jozini Lake is the place to be – in fact, it is the only place to be in South Africa to attract the striped “water dog”. Within minutes of boarding Shayamanzi II on our recent visit, both the experienced as well as the novice anglers in our group were bending their rods from either of Shayamanzi II’s three powered tender boats, as the “tigers” lit up the water surface. Situated in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom, with its rich heritage and natural beauty, Jozini Lake is fed by the Pongola River which is its only water source. Its extreme Northern tip creeps into Swaziland and the rest of the northern area and the entire western and southern banks are bordered by nature reserves. If you think fishing is best left to more experienced anglers, the surrounding Pongola Game Reserve and Phongolo Nature Reserve provide spectacular game viewing from the water’s edge. A large variety of wildlife can be viewed from the Shayamanzi decks or the tender boats, and even birders will find the area’s 350 species very enticing. Bush birds, raptors and water birds are plentiful, as are cormorants, herons, ducks, storks and many more. Shayamanzi I and Shayamanzi II were the first houseboats in South Africa and are designed to deliver a one-of-a-kind experience. Manned by experienced

staff and, in our case, the charming skipper, Bramson, a trip on a Shayamanzi is all about taking time out to appreciate the special wonders of the area in comfort and style. All meals served on board are prepared to the highest standards. A hearty breakfast will prepare you for the day’s many activities, while a sumptuous lunch is the perfect way to spend an early afternoon recalling the morning’s tall fishing tales. In the evenings, the on-board chef will prepare a stylish three-course dinner, or even a braai under the stars. The fully stocked bar is open until late, while bottomless tea and coffee is available all day, accompanied by freshly baked rusks or other treats. On-board accommodation is in one of ten cabins serviced daily by the deck hands. Six comfortable cabins are situated on the lower deck, and offer spectacular views of the surrounding Lebombo Mountains through large sliding doors that open onto the lake. The houseboats’ catamaran design allows for four more en-suite cabins – two per pontoon – each with generously sized windows. With all cabins occupied, Shayamanzi II can accommodate up to 20 passengers, while Shayamanzi I will easily quarter up to 12. Every Shayamanzi adventure is to be savoured and can be enjoyed by both young and old. Perfectly suited for corporate getaways or special family celebrations, the Lake Jozini experience on board Shayamanzi will change your perception of this local holiday and call you back to “hit the water” again and again. So You Think You Can Skate? Thrashin’ Kimberley Text: Katie Bigelow Images © Rudi Jeggle & Sam Clark, courtesy of Kimberley Diamond Cup

This month, Kimberley hosts the Skateboarding World Championships. That’s right: Kimberley. In the Northern Cape. This grand prix of street skateboarding is the world’s richest skating competition, and attracts a phenomenal contingent of first-class athletes. The championship events form part of the Kimberley Diamond Cup (KDC). It is hosted at Kumba Skate Plaza, Africa’s finest skate park which was built not only to facilitate international competition, but to stimulate skateboarding as a sport for everyone. News on the street is that this month’s competitive skateboarding jamboree in Kimberley will attract the biggest international skating field in history. Organisers of the KDC anticipate that skaters from at least 50 countries will compete in the five World Championship events. Last year’s Cup drew 250 skateboarders from 38 countries, and saw Brazilian skater Kelvin Hoeffler win the World Champion street title, not to mention his share of the $500,000 prize money. It’s that incredible purse, in fact, that makes it possible for the Northern Cape capital to attract so many stellar athletes, ensuring that just about every serious street skater in South Africa endeavours to make the pilgrimage here, whether to participate or give support. “It’s the best skateboarding in the world,” says Andrew Nero, founder of Africa Skate, an online platform connecting skaters across the continent. “It rivals X Games and Street League, both massive international contests. Professionals are flown in from all over the world, and many of the world’s best amateurs compete. It’s amazing. “It’s the world’s biggest skateboarding competition with the highest purse,” says Marco Morgan, chairman of the National Skateboarding Federation. “I’ve been going since its inception. There’s such a buzz. It’s really catalytic and inspirational. Plus, there’s a full-year programme that goes to all the different cities, so it activates the culture and then brings it all together once a year.” The programme Morgan refers to is a series of KDC Grand Slam regional qualifiers that happen in four hubs, plus the outreach-style Skateboarding for Hope Tour which has 17 stops through the year, and actively works to introduce young

people – particularly underprivileged children – to the sport. “We visit different towns, many of which aren’t typically exposed to skateboarding,” says Markus Museler of Old School Productions, which manages all the events. “We get pro skateboarders to come on tour with us, and we do clinics with youths from underprivileged homes. They get skateboarding lessons as well as life skills lessons, plus a cool day out where they can watch a pro contest and get products from our sponsors. It’s all about showing them what’s possible with skateboarding. “Even in towns where there’d previously been no skating scene at all – places like Postmasburg, Kathu and De Aar – the impact over the four years since we began is very evident. We’re seeing many more youngsters on skateboards. We used to have 30 kids entering the competitions, now there are close to 150. There are youngsters who skated for the first time with us in 2011 who are now making it onto the podium, winning contests. That started with us giving them a board and an introductory clinic. And there are some who have progressed through the various levels of KDC and are competing internationally now.” Enthusiasm and interest generated by the touring arm of the Diamond Cup has also meant that new skate parks have been built in places like Springbok, Kuruman, De Aar and Upington. “Growing up, I had a board, but never did anything with it,” says Kuruman-born Erwin Lyon. “There was no skateboarding in Kuruman. Now that Kuruman has a skate park, there’s a community of active skaters.” Lyon, whose own interest in skateboarding was fuelled

Kimberley – is the way skateboarding is being used as a way of uplifting the local community. “Before the Diamond Cup, there might have been five skateboarders in Kimberley,” says Nero. “Now there are hundreds. Many of them don’t have skateboards or shoes, but at Kumba they’ll be loaned a skateboard and have free access to skate. They draw children from the local townships and get them skateboarding. They’re equipping the community with all they need to get into the sport.” Managing Kumba for the last three years has been young Ohio-born skateboarder, Mike “Chinner” Koroczynsky, whose primary role is to mentor the youngsters who come to the park. “We run a monthly programme of competitions, weekly skating lessons and skateboarding clinics for the community,” he says, “and we’ve been involved with local government working with disadvantaged youths, and children with mental disabilities. We’re actively drawing attention to skateboarding, promoting it as something for young people to do, other than getting involved in drugs and other antisocial activities.

by the Skateboarding for Hope Tour, is now assistant manager at Kumba Skate Plaza, Kimberley’s state-of-theart skate park where the KDC is hosted. Lyon explains that, back in 2010, Northern Cape government officials went to the USA looking for sports events to fit into a plan to transform their province into South Africa’s “extreme destination”. There, they identified skateboarding as a sport with development potential, and made a deal to bring an American skateboarding contest – then known as the Maloof Money Cup – to Kimberley. In order to facilitate the competition, California Skateparks was commissioned to design and build a world class skating facility. “It cost R5 million, and it’s the best in Africa,” says Nero. “It’s beautiful. Absolutely smooth, perfectly level, and it doesn’t chip.” Plus it’s got the biggest ramp on the continent. “Just dropping in on the Kimberley vert(ical) ramp is the most insane feeling you could ever imagine”. Aside from its glorious design and functionality, though, perhaps the real triumph of Kumba Skate Plaza – and the most satisfying side-effect of the Diamond Cup being hosted in

“I’m here primarily to motivate these youngsters to continue skating and help them with their attitude, keep them grounded, teach them life lessons. We get on average around 600 to 1,000 children per week and many more during school holidays. Almost 95 % of them come from disadvantaged areas, and they come every day. For a lot of them it’s an escape, but for some of them, it’s their life.” According to Tim McFerrin, president of the World Skateboarding Federation, the Diamond Cup has played a significant role in the dramatic rise in popularity of skateboarding in South Africa in recent years. “The explosion of skateboarding in South Africa is something we’ve tried to orchestrate,” he says. “When we first brought the competition to South Africa, skateboarding wasn’t in the top 20 preferred sports, but in an economic study we conducted last year, skateboarding was the third most popular, behind soccer and rugby. “South Africa probably isn’t among the world’s top five skateboarding countries yet, but I bet you it’s close,” says McFerrin. “Yahoo Sports called South Africa an emerging market for skateboarding two years ago. I think it’s going to be a hotbed. There are now 11 other African countries that will be able to participate in the Skateboarding World Championships in October, and that’s phenomenal. Nobody knows how good these skateboarders will be, but the mere experience will help grow skateboarding across the continent. I think everything we’ve done in South Africa serves as a model for the rest of the world.”

The Kimberley Diamond Cup will take place from 7th to 10th October at Kumba Skate Plaza in Kimberley. Visit kimberleydiamondcup.com for more information.

Dreams Fulfilled Luvo Ntezo Luvo Ntezo – Head Sommelier at the prestigious One&Only Resort in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town – joins us to engage in a dialogue about his life, his undying love for his children, family and best friend, and his many dreams that are now reality. Text: Sarah-Claire Picton Images © Supplied Luvo Ntezo does not compromise on who he is. This is an individual who lives true to what you’ll read on his Twitter description, which he repeats to me: “Character is who you are when no one is watching.” There is no hiding behind closed doors for Luvo Ntezo. He is consistent in his honesty, integrity, humility and passion. His first job as a pool porter at Steenberg Estate was also his unofficial introduction to the world of wines by Steenberg’s wine-maker, John Loubser. But it was at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town where his nowfamous nose made some noise. Luvo, a dishwasher at the hotel at that time, was given the opportunity to taste a new wine, and, after a thorough sniff, he was able to tell that the wine was corked. Highly impressed by this remarkable smelling ability, the hotel sent Luvo to study at the Cape Town Wine Academy. The wheel of life soon kicked it up a notch and “Luvo Ntezo” became a name that everyone wanted to get a taste of. During his six years at the Twelve Apostles he won various awards, including South African Sommelier of the Year in 2008. In 2011 Luvo was appointed Head Sommelier at the One&Only, where he has racked up a further spate of awards. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, though. 2013 was a watershed in Luvo’s life: “I went to a private clinic and said: ‘I have an eating disorder and a drinking problem.’” He is proud of the changes he has since made in his life, and while it was an “extremely difficult, painful, emotional journey – it was an enlightening experience nonetheless. I did (and still don’t) regret that I had an eating disorder and a drinking problem, but chose to embrace the fact that I could see my problems from a different angle, and accept help, accept change, and say ‘this will be me’.”

Indwe 59

There might have been expectations for him to keep these challenges to himself, but Luvo held his head high and chose the path of honesty: “I am going to build dignity in my life, and I did.” His eyes do not look down, his guard is not up. “We all have our own lives, we all have our different ideas of how we want things to be done in our lives. You cannot be a principle authority of life, and once we realise that, we start to live on our own terms.” Luvo admits to being quite a workaholic, and is highly passionate about his job, where he spends time doing various wine-related activities, such as regular drives to wine farms to discover new wines. Away from the “wine world”, he loves hiking, with Skeleton Gorge being his all-time favourite hike. Snakes also come up on his “love list”, as does conversing in debates with very smart people – “not emotionally driven debates, but thoughtful, important, life conversations.” He loves watching tennis, PGA championships, and learning things he does not know – his most recent being chess, which his son is teaching him to play. We reflect on the different dreams he had growing up: “To live in a decent house and eat a plate of food and be full.” As he grew, so too did his dreams: “Driving a convertible with the rooftop down, on my own, and listening to Meat Loaf.” Luvo eventually went on to live this dream, and many others. “I am happy with my life, I am completely satisfied with everything I have, and satisfied with all the errors I have made – every single mistake I ever made in life – as they have shaped who I am.” His best friend, who is a waiter he has known for several years, is spoken about with such reverence. He is referred to as the welcomed “home-invader” who is there to misbehave (as best friends do!) and tips Luvo with priceless advice: “‘Luvo, if they offer you a drink, just say: ‘Not anymore.’ And trust me, they should appreciate never having seen you drunk!” He knows his challenges, his weaknesses and his

60 Indwe

strengths – they travel to wine farms together for tastings – and they laugh about the past. There are so many dreams that have come true for Luvo Ntezo. 2015, however, has been an especially good year for him. “I saw something I have always wanted to see. I saw a memory of my mother honoured and embraced through my daughter.” She is also named after his mother (Krjstina Mbali). “We are not Zulu, but Mbali in Zulu means ‘a flower’ or ‘a rose’, and Mbali in Xhosa means ‘legacy’. When I saw my daughter I knew that I would love, honour, embrace and cherish her – for as long as I cherish the memory of my mother.” Another dream that has also come true for Luvo is the ability to say: “I still cherish my childhood dream, every day – to have a plate of food, on my own, and eat until I cannot finish it because I am full. I now live that dream.” It was also a dream for Luvo to finally be comfortable with who he is, which he feels is one of the most challenging things in life,– the ability to “be who we are”. As someone who has been all over the world, the words he follows resonate even more deeply: “We travel the world, going to new places and discovering new things, having this vast information about the world, and yet we don’t take the time to travel ourselves, and access that knowledge of ourselves.” Luvo is proud to have reached a point when he can say: “This is the new me. I am willing to learn and discover new things, and to have a job that I serve with integrity, passion, and love. I am excited to be here every single day. It is so effortless to be here, I do not see it as a job, it is part of my life.” And finally, to hear the words, said to him by his sons: “We love you, Dad, and you look much better now that you do not drink anymore.” He pauses, and then adds one more: “I guess it is also one of my dreams to sit here, and do an interview, but not fake my identity.”

Breaking Cycles of Violence – One Wave at a Time Waves For Change Text: Julie Graham Images © Hannah Maule-ffinch & Waves for Change

Indwe 67

The idea that experiencing the ocean on a surfboard can be beneficial to both one’s physical and mental health should not come as a surprise to anyone who has experienced the joys of surfing. Studies have proven surfing not only has the ability to improve a person’s mood, but it can also alleviate stress and depression. Surfing has been used around the world as a way to help individuals cope with mental and physical illness and, in 2011, this concept was introduced in South Africa in the form of Waves For Change, an initiative that uses surfing to provide therapeutic benefits to youngsters in some of Cape Town’s most unstable and violent communities.

The program’s founder, Tim Conibear, is extremely passionate about the cause, and has grown the organisation into an award winning surf therapy initiative that reaches around 250 young people each week, and is making huge developments in implementing change in individuals and communities alike. Targeting areas in and around Cape Town which are known to have some of the highest instances of violence around the world, Waves For Change is committed to their aim of stabilising young adults impacted by emotional and physical trauma in order to increase their long-term prospects for social acceptance and inclusion. Areas in which the program is active at the moment are Masiphumelele (launched in September 2011), Khayelitsha (launched in July 2012) and Lavender Hill (launched in September 2014). Young people from these areas face regular exposure to both community as well as domestic violence, which adds to the existing stress caused by the social impact of poverty.

68 Indwe

With over 150,000 active gang members, Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most violent cities. Young South Africans from violent communities where gangs run rampant and poverty is a very real problem, experience up to 15 traumatic incidents a year, compared to their UK or US counterparts who are said to only experience between three and five in a lifetime. This kind of continuous trauma has a massive effect on the way youngsters behave, learn, and respond to their environments. Perpetuating cycles of violence, engaging in high-risk behaviour (mostly sexual) and poor attendance at school are all commonplace, and just add to the instances of social exclusion that take place as a result. Conibear, originally from Oxford in the UK, has been passionate about surfing for years and wholeheartedly believes in the psychological benefits of being in the water. After studying, he started working at the Harlyn Surf School in Cornwall, where he was first exposed to the notion that positive social and mental development could come from

surfing. This was made even more evident in his work with mentally handicapped children from a nearby school. After a few trips to South Africa, he started taking youngsters from the local townships with him to the beach to surf. He quickly found that the bond formed between them was unbreakable, and that their response was something that could not be ignored. With the assistance of Waves For Change co-founders, Apish Tshetsha and Bongani Ndlovu, they developed the programme in Masiphumelele township and started getting more and more kids into the water. Surfing is a sport that requires time, patience, perseverance, and commitment to learning. It is not an easy feat. The rewards, however, are enormous, and the idea of proving to yourself that you can achieve goals that at some point you didn’t believe were attainable, creates a sense of self-worth – something most of the youngsters from these violent communities lack. Waves For Change has created and developed a unique form of therapy which combines surfing with humanistic and cognitive behavioural approaches designed specifically for youths who have learning and behavioural problems (often due to exposure to emotional and psychological trauma). The

70 Indwe

surfing coaches are often from the same communities as the kids and have been trained specifically to become mentors, and even to deliver basic counselling. This not only provides job opportunities, but also introduces vital skills into communities that are heavily under-resourced. From Tuesday to Saturday, Waves For Change takes youths – who have been specifically chosen by teachers and social workers – out to nearby beaches to spend time in the water with them. The response to such a dramatic change in environment, as well as the one-on-one attention given to each of the children, creates a sense of hope that inspires them to keep coming back week after week. Positive changes can be seen in their school attendance and their grades, as well as in general changes in lifestyle, such as choosing to opt out of the gang culture. 18-year-old Lwandile Mntanywa is one example of a success story. Growing up in an abusive home and being exposed to violence regularly from a young age resulted in Mntanywa developing acute symptoms of anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. He started surfing with Waves For Change when he was 14 years old, and is no longer part of a

gang, his grades have improved, and he is on track to graduate soon. His newly found passion for surfing has helped him to deal with his past. “Your past doesn’t go away, man. It’s always on your mind. But when I’m on the beach, I always think about the waves,” he says. Mntanywa, who couldn’t even swim before joining the Waves For Change program, is now a qualified lifeguard and works at Camps Bay Beach. Waves For Change is making remarkable strides in implementing change in these violent communities and, since their inception in 2011, they now have a collection of mental health and developmental professionals, as well as an evergrowing team of trainee auxiliary youth care workers – who also surf. This program is a massively positive step in changing the cycles of violence in communities where violence is rife and the opportunities for success are rare. Conibear and his team are doing incredible work, and the positivity they are inspiring in the youth of this country is remarkable. For more information on this incredible project, and to find out how you can get involved by sponsoring a project, donating, or simply surfing, go to www.waves-for-change.org.

The first thing that struck us about “Gabs” was the friendly people. Everyone seems happy and relaxed. Gaborone is such a dichotomy. It boasts a very modern and clever urban design, with increasing international corporate investment and economic growth, while still having a wonderfully laid-back African vibe that makes it a wonderful spot to visit. So whether you are visiting for business, or using Gaborone as an entry point to the game reserves in the north, make sure to spend some time in this fascinating city. AVANI Gaborone Hotel and Casino

Centrally located and the perfect base for business or exploring, the AVANI Gaborone Hotel and Casino (formally known as the Gaborone Sun) was a welcome spot of luxury after our family’s two weeks of camping in the north of Botswana. Enjoying a welcome drink near the sparkling pool, we were impressed with the staff, who were welcoming and helpful. And they certainly had their hands full – the hotel was at capacity, hosting many of the golfers

participating in the Nomads National Tournament held at the neighbouring Gaborone Golf Club. Hotel visitors enjoy a complementary round of golf, too, so we will need to plan more time for that the next time we visit. We were happy to relax in the well-appointed suites and while away a few hours on the sun loungers around the pool. For the more energetic, there’s a gym, as well as tennis and squash courts, which are needed to work off all the eating and drinking you’ll be enjoying in any of the hotel’s three restaurants. We enjoyed a special dinner at the more upmarket and very elegant

The venue represents craft manufacturers from all over Botswana and South Africa, and offers a huge selection of very varied products. If you’re looking for curios and gifts, this is a must. I was happy to browse the many rooms of interesting artworks. There’s a coffee shop on the premises too, serving drinks and light meals. The No.1 Ladies’ Coffee House

I’m a great fan of Alexander McCall Smith’s book series, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which is set in and around Gaborone, so when the AVANI Gaborone Hotel staff suggested this spot, we jumped at the chance. And how delightful it was. Only recently opened, the coffee shop is quirky and trendy, and a fabulous spot to enjoy some homemade ginger beer or lemonade and a slice of delicious carrot cake. The coffee shop can be found at the Thapong

Bull and Bush Restaurant

Enjoying legendary status in the city, this restaurant truly deserves its stripes. The food was delicious (steaks are their speciality), and the outdoor tables in the rustic setting under the thatch boma provide a great place to enjoy the gardens, which are decorated with locally crafted wooden and metal statues. A wooden climbing frame will keep young children active, and pool tables will entertain the teens and young adults. Contact +267 397 5070 or email bullbush@global.bw for reservations.

Data Analysis and CAATs Technology Streamlining Financial Audits Today, the use of computers and information technology is taken for granted, and performing audits without the use of information technology is no longer an option. The question begs asking, though: How can one conduct an audit without using computers and technology when all the required information is stored on a computer system? This article is intended to assist in fostering an understanding of the science of data analysis, and the role it plays in optimising a financial audit. Text & Image © Mazars Within the audit and assurance spectrum, data analysis is made up of two primary components: Data Analytics and Computer Assisted Audit Techniques (CAATs). Data Analytics is the process of examining raw data with the objective of deriving conclusions about that information. It focuses primarily on the conclusions that can be drawn based solely on what is already known about the raw data, and converted into information through appropriate stringing and contextualisation. CAAT’s are the program tools used by an auditor to assist in identifying discrepancies, exceptions and anomalies in the data provided. Using CAATs one can extract data from frequently used file formats, as well as extract tables from most databases. This enables an auditor to use data from almost any application on any technology platform, allowing for the performance of data analytics through every business environment and in each industry sector. Data analysis can be used to perform a large spectrum of queries and other analyses on the data. It can be used during both the testing of controls and substantive testing of transactions and balances. Because the data analysis software can analyse large data volumes – often the complete data set comprises of many millions of records – and extract specified information, the risk of

82 Indwe

overlooking a particular record for the specified information is removed. Moreover, the manual resources that would have been used to perform a sample test of the extracted data can concentrate on the investigation of the CAATs results, which in most cases would yield the exception being looked for. Data analysis software has many features, such as: data queries, data stratification, sample extractions, missing sequence identification, statistical analysis and calculations. This software also allows for the joining and merging of files and tables. Data analysis assists auditors, both internal and external, and management in their search for irregularities or exceptions in data files. It helps them to understand the value and detail of incomplete or exceptional data through the comparative analysis of the data. Furthermore, forensic consultants find great benefit in data analysis by extrapolating large amounts of data to determine if untoward activity had occurred. This may ultimately lead to fraud detection. Through the adoption of data analysis, the audit process could be streamlined or automated. This would result in significant time saving, greater assurance and faster analysis of the complete dataset. “Radio is dead. Long live the podcast.” – Brett Rogers

The Power of the Podcast Text: Julie Graham Images © Brett Rogers, Sean Drummond & iStockphoto.com

I recently embarked on a solo road-trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town. With 1,400 km to cover in the space of two days and no one to keep me company, I approached friends for advice on forms of entertainment for the journey. Someone said: “You should download some podcasts.” Podcasts? My ignorance had led me to believe that this form of audio media was reserved solely for people who found long-winded educational talks a source of “entertainment”. I was so wrong.

Indwe 85

Since its inception in the mid-90’s, the Internet has evolved at the speed of light. Suddenly, the whole world seems smaller. The information super-highway is being infiltrated with massive amounts of data every second and a global revolution continues to take place every day. Podcasts are a big part of this revolution. I decided to chat to two “podcast aficionados” about the onset of podcasts, and pick their brains for some insider information: Brett Rogers, presenter, developer and co-founder of the Balcony Sessions podcast; and Sean Drummond, screenwriter, filmmaker, international coordinator of Shnit International Short Film Festival and co-founder of Space Life (and Other Dumb Ideas) online radio show and podcast Julie Graham (JG): What is a podcast? Brett Rogers (BR): I would hesitate to give a final definition, but the way I see it podcasts are an equal opportunity digital broadcasting format, allowing anyone to create audio on topics that that they wish to talk about or music that they wish to share. Podcasts are the great equaliser… cheap to make, easy to download, personally curated programming. Sean Drummon (SD): Sheesh, that is an interesting question. The easy answer is that it’s on-demand radio content that people can access in their own time, own space, and in different forms like music, arts, talk, comedy. But it’s more than that, I think. It’s an exciting new medium that is pretty expansive in its reach – from academics, education, hard-hitting audio documentary and investigative reporting, to storytelling and pure expression. JG: When did you start developing an interest in podcasts? How were you introduced to them? BR: I started getting interested about seven years ago when I got

bored on iTunes and was looking for new music to listen to. In the end I landed up abandoning the idea of listening to music and found comedy, science and education instead. SD: I actually started off listening to obscure music podcasts from Europe and Japan, as well as film-related and screenwriting podcasts. And got deeper into it from there – science and tech is an interest, so a lot of those. And humour. It actually probably started off with an interest in Internet radio in general, talk formats and really good international programming. And that live format evolved into podcasting. JG: Tell me a bit about your podcasts? BR: The Balcony Sessions started about four months ago, and is an interview style podcast where James de Rothschild and I interview

interesting people about their lives. We don’t take much interest in their work, but rather who they are, and what their philosophies on life are. It’s one hour long, casual and enjoyable. SD: Myself and the Space Life crew knew we wanted to do a talk show that was irreverent, and as closet geeks this was the best place to get together to talk about science, pop-culture and the things we love. We’re the open-minded idiot in the room, and our guests are experts in their fields who open up new worlds of knowledge to us and the audience in an informal, funny forum. And over the years a greater narrative has developed, where really the show is trying to dig into the nature of humans, modern life, who/what we are and where we are going. One of the reviews we got on iTunes was something along the lines of “pretty funny, kinda dumb, but really kinda smart.” I like that.

interesting international guests. In South Africa, I think I’d like to hear something more socially and even politically engaged. I’d like to hear some great local music podcasts and some narrative stuff too. I’ve heard rumours that the band Mr Cat & the Jackal are working on a narrative musical radio drama series. How cool would that be? If they aren’t doing it, they should. Hear that? You should!

Download the Balcony Sessions on http://thebalconysessions. libsyn.com/. Listen to ‘Space Life & Other Dumb Ideas’ on Mondays from 19h00 to 21h00 CAT on Assemblyradio.com, and the podcast a week later on iTunes, Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/lalela-audio) and all good podcast platforms. Or visit them on Facebook at facebook.com/ spacelifeandotherdumbideas.

JG: Why should people listen to podcasts? BR: Imagine you can listen to whatever you want, whenever you want. That’s why. SD: So many reasons... entertainment, education, accessibility, the fact that there’s so much good stuff out there, there’s something for you no matter what your interests are. And there’s a world’s worth of content, too. We’re not restricted by borders, maybe language, but not geography. We’ve got listeners in 146 countries! I don’t even know who’s listening to us in Vietnam or Afghanistan, but someone is! It’s mad. JG: What would you like to hear more of? BR: I’d like to hear people whose taste in music I respect make podcasts. I think it’s probably very difficult, though, considering copyright laws. Until that changes, I don’t have much hope. SD: Probably more South African podcasts in general, or maybe more international collaboration podcasts – we don’t need to restrict to our own regions content-wise, we’ve had some really

Heading North Road Trip With the Mokka Text: Monique Parker Images © QuickPic & Anena Burger

Often there is almost no better way to discover the beauties of one’s own country than by venturing out onto the road on a good day with nothing but good company and a trusty vehicle. The new Opel Mokka, the brand’s first ever compact SUV, has been receiving unprecedented acclaim around the globe, and we were lucky enough to be able to head out with this “new German” on a road trip stretching all the way from Cape Town to the majestic landscape of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Taking on such a long road trip over a period of five days is quite challenging, so we took off early on the first morning to complete the longest stretch of the drive, all the way to the small town of Kakamas in the Northern Cape – a good 850 km. After a journey of about 12 hours, which included stopping at all the little gems along the way, we arrived at our accommodation for the evening, Vergelegen Guesthouse, which is ideally situated on the N14 in the small town of Kakamas. The guesthouse, located on the banks of the Orange River, is perfect for visitors who are stopping over en route to a further destination. We were tired, of course, but the Mokka makes even the long stretches on the dreary N7 seem less tedious, thanks to features such as cruise control, an IntelliLink infotainment system, and

even a power socket to charge your devices. When it comes to more specs and comfort at a more reasonable price, the vehicle still upholds the car manufacturer’s style and versatility. The Mokka’s high levels of quality, driver aids and safety technology place it in a firm position against its rivals. Opel has kept the range simple with four models. There is a choice of two trim levels, as well as a choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission with front wheel drive. The entry-level Enjoy derivative offers all the necessities for an already comfortable vehicle. Features include front and rear fog lights, daytime running lights, a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth, speed-sensitive power steering with a multi-function steering wheel, and USB and aux input. The Cosmo model, which we had the pleasure of driving, offers a few more luxury add-ons which really helped to make our road trip a breeze. Think auto windscreen wipers, automatic headlights with active high-beam assist, front and rear parking sensors, electric folding mirrors, heated front seats and steering wheel, rear privacy glass, 18’’ alloy wheels, leather upholstery, a rear arm rest, and a 230V power socket.

Indwe 89

The next morning, following a lovely rest, we gave ourselves a bit of a break and only took to the road midmorning for our final destination. A mere four hours later, we arrived in a land of seemingly endless sand dunes, dotted with shrubs and blackthorn trees as far as the eye could see, as well as the entrance of Kgalagadi Lodge, where we were due to spend the next few days. Situated in the beautiful landscape of the Kalahari Desert, right where South Africa meets Botswana, the range of activities in the Kgalagadi area are abundant – we never could have imagined the desert would have this much to offer. With a hands-on, hospitable approach, the owners of the lodge – the Koortzens – had planned a lovely itinerary for our threeday stay, which of course included the stand-out reason one visits Kgalagadi Lodge: to experience the beautiful Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. On our last morning in the Kgalagadi we visited several San cultural villages en route to the lesser known Kanoneiland (which is the largest inhabited island in South Africa) via Upington, where we truly discovered a gem in the African Vineyard Guest Farm – an absolute must-visit for anyone travelling through this area. Opel’s 1.4-litre turbocharged engine, which powers all four derivatives of the Mokka, is sturdy, and makes overtaking on

90 Indwe

the long drive quite easy. The engine produces 103 kW between 4,900 and 6,000 r/min, coupled with an eager 200 Nm of torque between 1,850 and 4,900 r/min. This made the drive up north pleasant, smooth, and very enjoyable. Unfortunately, South Africa does not offer the diesel or 4WD derivatives, but with a frugal fuel consumption of between 6 l/100 km and 7 l/100 km on the petrol derivative, we ended up using only a bit more than two tanks all the way to our destination and back, which is extremely reasonable for such an extended road trip. Over a period of five days, we had driven close to 2,000 km. Even on the most unruly of roads, the Mokka still offered a comfortable drive, and the tyre pressure monitoring and cruise control options made the drive that much more pleasant. Other amnesties which made the trip a breeze were the dynamic parking assistance lines on the infotainment screens, as well as the EcoFlex drive assist and stop-start drive technology in the Cosmo model. Unfortunately, we inevitably had to say goodbye eventually, and as we drove over the bridge from the majestic Kanoneiland, we witnessed a bewildering sunrise of orange hues over the majestic Orange River. This was indeed a great way to bid adieu to the enchanting Northern Cape – an area of South Africa which we will hopefully get a chance to explore again soon.

Feathering Your Nest Retirement Savings: What You Need to Know Text: Justine Olivier/Finweek Image Š iStockphoto.com

Saving for retirement is one of the most important things you can do throughout your life. Unfortunately, many leave this critical financial objective to the last minute, scrambling to ensure that they have enough funds to retire comfortably. Below, we look at some of the issues you need to keep in mind when saving for your golden years. Indwe 93

While you should effectively take advantage of the benefit of compound interest while retirement is still far off – compound interest is when interest earned on the money you save accrues interest itself, thus essentially causing your funds to snowball – there are many other factors to be aware of when planning your retirement. It is also vital you choose the right savings vehicle to suit your needs. Jeanette Marais, Director of Distribution and Client Service at Allan Gray, says: “When investing for retirement, it is important to plan for future increases in prices and future increases in your standard of living. “Price inflation is a general increase in prices and a corresponding fall in the purchasing power of your money. Salary increases that keep pace with price inflation allow you to maintain a fixed standard of living over time. However, salary increases that exceed price inflation may increase your standard of living and therefore your cost of living. You can think of this as ‘lifestyle inflation’, which is the increase in your standard of living over time.” She says that as you become accustomed to a certain lifestyle, you will need to increase your retirement savings to maintain this standard of living, or otherwise risk spending far beyond what your retirement savings will allow. Another factor you need to keep in mind is market volatility, as this can affect the longevity of your savings. While market volatility is to be expected – it is a normal part of investing – it is something you need to take into account and effectively combat to ensure optimal performance of your retirement vehicle. “To achieve above-inflation [real] returns, you need to be comfortable taking on some risk. History has shown that over the long term, equities provide the best return. While returns do not come in a straight line, fluctuations smooth out over time. If you invest in equities, you need to be comfortable with a bumpy ride,” says Marais. Spreading your risk by investing in various sectors and industries will ensure you are adequately equipped to tackle market volatility. Says Mark Lapedus, Head of Product Development at Liberty Investments: “Market conditions in general have an impact on all investments, including retirement savings. Inflation will contribute to the client’s income goal increasing over time, and market volatility will affect the value of the savings and, as a result, the benefit that this can produce. “Having said that, this is not necessarily a bad thing – consider a client who only invests in cash where the volatility is very low. He will probably have a worse outcome over the long term, compared with a client in a portfolio that can produce returns ahead of inflation, even if the portfolio is volatile.”

94 Indwe

Keep in mind, says Braam Fouché, a financial adviser at PSG Wealth, that investment returns are a net result of asset allocation – your choice of assets – less fees. He says you need to “ensure your savings vehicles are costeffective, completely transparent and reviewed regularly, with a clear indication of contributions, costs and returns. Some companies furnish you with an elaborate annual statement that includes all but your real results.” It’s never too late to save. Ensure your financial independence during retirement by starting today. Do this by consulting a financial adviser and looking into savings vehicles. Says Fouché: “Through careful planning and allocating your capital to diverse assets, you can achieve a comfortable retirement. Savings are not only the fixed debit-order or employment-based retirement plan you sign up for, but also the assets you acquire along the way, like property and equity. The combination of these plus personal savings and employment-based savings should be focused collectively to generate this exact result [a comfortable retirement].”

The Power of Compound Interest Taking inflation and market volatility into account today, how much would a 20- or 30-year-old have to save to retire comfortably? Michelle Dubois, legal specialist at Liberty, says: “The longer you delay starting your savings plan, the more you are going to have to save. Using a basic future value calculation, we can compare two 20-year-olds who wish to retire at the age of 60. Client A saves R1,000 a month from the age of 20 to the age of 30. He then stops contributing, but leaves the funds invested until he reaches 60. Client B, on the other hand, saves R1,000 from the age of 30 until he retires at 60. “Assuming a growth rate of 10 % for both A and B the results are as follows: Client A will have saved a total of R1,000 x 12 months x 10 years = R120,000. Client B will have saved R1,000 x 12 x 30 years = R360,000. At the age of 60, Client A will have capital valued at R4 million, whereas client B will have only R2.3 million. This shows the cost of delay.”

Turning the Big Three Into the Big Four Lexus RC F-Sport Text: Bernard Hellberg Sr Images © Lexus SA

Developed from the ground up as a dynamic coupé, the purpose-built Lexus RC 350 F-Sport blends the best of this Japanese automaker’s achievements into a superbly dynamic sports coupé. It is an undisputed fact in motoring journalism circles that one should never judge a car without having first sat in it. This is especially true of the new Lexus RC 350 F-Sport, a purpose-built Japanese thoroughbred, which entertains and delights both outside and in – from the stylish interior that is effortlessly user-friendly, with seats that are beautifully shaped and covered in highgrade leather, to the hand-stitched detailing that speak of Japanese craftsmanship at its very best. As a genuine coupé – with wide-opening doors and seatbelts which demand a fair stretch to get hold of – the RC’s interior has the aura of business class stamped all over it. All materials, whether leather, plastic or brushed aluminium, are integrated seamlessly, and are assembled in such a manner that even the eight airbags are discreetly hidden out of sight, leaving not a trace of seams which would have revealed their hiding place in a lesser vehicle. From its aggressive front styling, with the iconic spindle grille as the main feature, the RC is clearly positioned as a relative of the equally dramatic LFA supercar. Body sculpture is taut and defined, and large air intakes are of the multi-purpose variety in that they not only cool the brakes and the engine, but also cleverly divert air down the sides of the vehicle when travelling at speed, creating ample downforce, thereby enhancing high-speed stability even further. The technology transfer from the LFA doesn’t end

with the RC’s clever aerodynamic styling either. On-theskin engineering is equally inspiring. The RC inherits the same five-layer paint process pioneered on the LFA, which explains the deep, brilliant finish of the car’s sensuous lines. Multi-LED headlamps, as well as tail lamps and fog lamps, also play a part in defining the RC as a work of art on wheels. Despite spending relatively little time with the RC on the road, every moment behind the wheel underscored the RC’s dynamic nature through its famous all-alloy, 24-valve, V6, 4-camshaft jewel of an engine that effortlessly (no turbo lag) produces 233 kW and 378 Nm of torque. Mating this engine to the equally impressive eightspeed gearbox with a torque converter lockup is a match made in motoring heaven. Everything, whether cruising sedately or accelerating fiercely, seems right and pleasant. The scenic drive from Gordon’s Bay, with its fairly narrow and twisty bits, and back to Franschhoek over the challenging Franschhoek Pass, is a part of the Western Cape that brings the best in a vehicle of quality to the fore. A brilliant and all new platform with strategically placed braces delivers a ride worthy of a class-leading grand touring coupé. These critical reinforcements – under the radiator support, transmission tunnel, and under the fuel tank – are merely a component of the advanced engineering that has gone into this car. Laser screw welding and high rigidity glass adhesive allows window glass to be treated as a structural chassis component, rather than a functional

Indwe 97

adornment. Surprisingly, despite these enhancements, the Lexus RC F-Sport weighs in at a lean 1,740 kg, creating what would be termed a perfectly honed fighting machine in boxing parlance. It used to be said that a car could either have an ultrastiff suspension setup (for superior road holding) or a softer arrangement, for the ultimate in comfort. The Lexus engineers seem to have managed a marriage between the two extremes, with fully independent front and rear coil springs, stabiliser bars and a double wishbone setup at the rear for maximum grip and balance. The result is a revelation. The RC holds a straight and true line through corners at speeds that will see lesser vehicles slide off the road and into the fynbos. Moreover, through it all, there is never a sense that one is driving an unsprung go-kart. The ride remains flexible and supple

98 Indwe

and, when approaching a corner at high speed and there’s a need to scrub off some of this velocity, the four disc brakes – 334 mm in front and 310 mm at the rear – are more than up to the task. Naturally, all four of these discs are ventilated, and the entire system is linked to ABS, EBD, BA, as well as stability and traction control which, in turn, all form part of the vehicle’s dynamic management system. The Lexus RC 350 F-Sport has, at last, stepped over that threshold which traditionally set the German “Big Three” apart from the rest. In this exclusive niche market where image is everything and where anyone suggesting an alternative to the Germans is met with a “yes, but...”, the Lexus RC has the potential to turn this segment into the “Big Four”. In addition, it has a luxury and safety features list as long as your arm and, unlike the German luxury brands, is sold as a fully equipped vehicle.

The Hip and Happening Hub of Gauteng Midrand Text: Property24.com Images Š Property24.com & iStockphoto.com

What is it about Midrand that has recent home buyers falling over their feet for its chic property? Is it the convenient and close proximity to all basic amenities, the designer homes and contemporary apartments, or simply the exciting and evolving culture?

Located in the Johannesburg metropolis, Midrand is built around the N1 highway, with wellknown surrounding suburbs including Dainfern, Carlswald, Glen Austin and Kyalami. With demand for Midrand homes far outstripping supply, there’s something in the air that has the property market booming.

There’s More to Midrand Than Meets the Eye Being a relatively modern suburb, Midrand has in recent years experienced huge growth due to large-scale industrial entities and leading companies moving into the area, many of them choosing to locate their head offices in this vibrant node. Easy access to highway links and the Gautrain make it the ideal position, especially as it is conveniently located almost halfway between

Johannesburg and Pretoria. As a result, many businesses have chosen to consolidate their operations into this one central and convenient location. Midrand is also home to the biggest conference centre in South Africa, Gallagher Estate, the Nizamiye Mosque, which is the largest in the country, the famous Kyalami Racing Circuit (currently being upgraded by new owners Porsche), and the enormous 131,000 m2 Mall of Africa development which is set to open in April next year.

Who Lives in Midrand? Recent suburb property data from Property24 reveals that over 64 % of home buyers in Midrand are between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The surge of young adults has transformed the area into a trendy urban space where people live, work and play, with a

Indwe 101

variety of properties on offer, from chic starter apartments to mansions in upmarket estates. The growing number of residents in Midrand occupy approximately 11,443 estates, 41,742 houses and 15,597 apartments, with 47 % of stable owners between the ages of 36 and 49 years, followed by the 50-64 age group which claims 28 % of the market. There’s something for everyone in Midrand, from scenic parks and glitzy malls to golf courses and food markets. Properties in Midrand also offer good value for money. The modern mansions or green eco estate homes offer a secure and serene lifestyle, often with beautiful views surrounded by parklands. Stylish apartments in and around the city centre are ideal for young adults or newly

102 Indwe

married couples, and for savvy business people, attractive investments, which include large commercial and industrial properties, are quickly snapped up as they appear on the market. With an average estimated market value of R827,000 and R763,000 for homes and apartments respectively, it’s no wonder that Midrand seems to be one of the most popular suburbs in Gauteng.

Cash in on the growing opportunities that Midrand has to offer. Visit www.property24.com to rent or buy your perfect home, apartment or townhouse in Midrand and be part of the economic expansion of Gauteng. *Statistics were accurate at the time of print.

Spaces that Inspire Freelancer “Hot-Spots” in Joburg, Durban, & Cape Town Text: Sarah-Claire Picton, Colleen Balchin, Katherine Kali & Wikus de Wet Images © Alexia Webster & Xavier Vahed

Pack your laptop and your creativity and head to our top picks for inspiring freelance-friendly spaces in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. Indwe 105

The South African freelance workforce continues to expand, with pioneering minds that fill up cafes, bistros, and bars – working, networking, and interacting with one another and their environment. If you are a freelancer in search of the ultimate work space, here are some of the crucial elements to factor in: free Wi-Fi, iEverything-accessibility, a friendly vibe, energy-boosting and affordable menu options, large cappuccinos, beer and creativity on tap. Inspired spaces are not a formula you find online, and stimulation can be found in many forms, and from the most unlikely of places.

Work-Friendly Jaunts in Joburg Colleen Balchin of Broaden A New Sound kicks off this freelance tour with highlights on where to go to be inspired when you’re freelancing in the City of Gold. As the second oldest bar in Johannesburg (launched in 1906), Kitchener’s on 71 Juta Street deserves a spot on the list. Okay, so there’s no Wi-Fi, but it’s an institution and cannot be left out! Go there for socialising, networking, DJs on decks,

106 Indwe

food in the belly, and familiar faces. Situated in Randburg, Warm & Glad is a neighbourhood café and bistro that’s a favourite among those in this northern suburb, and serves culinary comfort with a Portuguese and Asian influence. Father Coffee on 73 Juta Street, Braamfontein, is a roastery and espresso bar and makes the list too, but get there early to secure your spot. Also, the coffee is really strong, so if you’re writing an action movie it’s perfect. POST, also in Braamfontein, has a wide menu, gentle cappuccinos, and an outside bench. Vovo Telo in Norwood has a great vibe, while Motherland Coffee Company in Braamfontein and Rosebank are good for quick in and out stops.

Freelance Havens in Durban Katherine Kali of Bad Yogi takes over as we move east to the warm waters of welcoming Durban. Two favourites when it comes to shared workspaces are Green Door on Cato Road, and Open Plan Studios on

First Page: With a bar as well stocked as this, who wouldn’t want to spend some “working” time at Clarke’s. This Page: Clarke’s offers enticing green spaces, a view of popular Bree Street and the perfect cup of creamy coffee. Next Two Pages: Durban’s The Glenwood Bakery is famous for its homemade breads, weekend Eggs Benedict and of course spaces to get your creative juices flowing.

Station Drive. If we’re talking work and Wi-Fi-friendly, The Glenwood Bakery (www.glenwoodbakery.co.za) is Durban’s highlight, and Adam Robinson, “the hands behind the bakery”, is known to take his Hollandaise sauce very seriously which can you experience firsthand if you order the Eggs Benedict (available only on Saturdays and Sundays). This is very much a café and not a restaurant, with a small, ever changing, menu which is a tribute to simplicity. Other inspiring spaces include The Factory Café in Umbilo, where they have been serving coffee and putting smiles on faces since 2011, as well as The Coffee Tree.

Creative Corners in Cape Town Cape Town-based freelance photographer Wikus de Wet gets in front of the lens to offer insight on the best spots you can visit in the Mother City. Arnolds on Kloof Street has the best breakfast special in town before 07h00, while Honest Chocolate on Wale Street and Vovo Telo on Kloof Street both offer tasty treats in a conveniently central location. No parking fees in Kloof Street is also a major bonus for those looking to churn out maximum hours of work!

108 Indwe

While it may not be a Wi-Fi-friendly café, or a café at all, De Waal Park is a relaxing outdoor place in which to do admin, especially on a lovely day when there are always dogs running around to cheer you up… Stop off at the Engen on Orange Street and get some fruit and a snack before you, err, “park off”. Clarke’s Bar & Dining Room on Bree Street offers refreshing homemade lemonade to keep you focused. Over the next few months, the space at the back of Clarke’s will also see some changes to make it more conducive to a work and meeting environment during the day, while still offering great food, including our current favourite: smoked tomato soup and grilled cheese. The Power & Glory on Kloof Nek Road in Tamboerskloof, Field Office in Woodstock, The Woodstock Exchange, and Yours Truly on Kloof Street also make our list for great spaces to get your creative juices flowing. Uplifting energy is infectious, and it is especially important when it comes to your work environment. The “new” workspace is dynamic and layered with unique factors – from technology and the architecture to familiar faces and the flavours of freshly baked homemade bread. These are the spaces that create a platform where we can harvest fresh ideas and positively challenge outdated ones.

Mmabatho Palms is the North West’s favourite oasis resort experience. With the 4-star 150 room Peermont Walmont hotel and its feature swimming pool, stylish dining at the Motswedi Terrace Restaurant, the Palms Retreat Wellness Spa, a variety of entertainment and relaxation facilities, a convention centre and next door to Leopard Park golf course. Now you can fly direct to Mafikeng Airport with SA Express.

Rugby's Full Story The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum Text: Priya Pitambe/mediaclubsouthafrica.com Images © Springbok Experience Rugby Museum

In a country that is passionate about sport, the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum displays the full story of rugby in South Africa. Sport is close to many a South African’s heart. Soccer, rugby, cricket, athletics, among any number of other sporting codes, get the adrenaline racing and the heart pounding. The nation takes immense pride in its sportsmen and -women, many of whom excel in their fields. Now South Africa’s love for rugby has expanded into the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum in Cape Town. “We’re proud of our sport and our heritage, so we wanted to take that out to the public and let people get close to it,” Andy Colquhoun, the general manager of corporate affairs at the South African Rugby Union (Saru), told Cape Town Magazine about the museum.

Wild Excitement A world away from the stuffy houses of historical facts and figures of old, a huge lure for visitors to the rugby museum is the high level of interactivity. “It delivers a technology-driven ‘wow’

experience for visitors, combining iconic objects, interactive games and a rich audio-visual component to tell South Africa’s story through the eyes of its most powerful sport.” “As you enter through the Springbok tunnel, moving shadows of players walking beside you, you’re plunged head first into the experience,” reads Cape Town Magazine. “A crowd cheers overhead, and a giant screen shows rugga (rugby) action before you.” Colquhoun said that the “big goal was to have wild excitement and movement and colour, not something static. It’s much more than just display cases and text.” He described the experience as immersive. Travel blogger Tamlyn Amber also praised the interactivity of the museum: “There are even fun, rugby ball-shaped facts (which you flip up to read the answer) dotted here and there, that all serve to make for a more enjoyable and engaging experience. This is the perfect example of a modern museum.”

Indwe 111

The Good and the Bad The museum contains a host of artefacts that commemorate rugby’s highlights. Think of the boots Joel Stransky wore when he kicked that famous drop goal; the flag signed by the entire squad when they played New Zealand in 1937; and the No. 6 jersey Francois Pienaar wore in the 1995 World Cup. On the other hand, it also keeps in mind the darker aspects of rugby – how it was once used as a force of division. “The exhibit effectively weaves together the traditional account of white rugby with the often ignored tale of the development of black and coloured rugby before unity in 1992. So, even those who think they’re the ultimate fan are likely to learn about a side to the game they never knew existed,” says Cape Town Magazine.

Recognition and Reception In 2014, the museum was nominated for the International Award in the UK’s Museum and Heritage Awards. “Visited the museum on our trip from New Zealand,” wrote Brian Damon on the museum’s Facebook page. “What a spectacular experience. Everything was so impressive and made me very nostalgic. This is a must to see for overseas visitors. Keep up the good work.” The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum is open from 10h00 to 18h00 every day except for Christmas Day. For more information, visit www.sarugby.net/springbok-museum.

The Rugby World Cup In 1995, South Africa was basking in its new democracy, with Nelson Mandela as its first democratically elected president. During the same year, it also hosted rugby’s biggest event, the World Cup, which became a necessary unifying force for a nation recuperating from years of segregation. At the final between South Africa and New Zealand in Johannesburg, Mandela wore the Springbok jersey of the team captain, Francois Pienaar, a white Afrikaner. They embraced, and that image became a symbolic gesture of racial reconciliation. It was met with a joyous uproar from the packed stadium. At the end of the tournament South Africa walked away with the ultimate prize, the Webb Ellis Cup. The Springboks once again hoisted the trophy in 2007 after beating England 15 – 6 in a hard fought match, and they are hoping to make it third time lucky at the tournament this year, which will run until 1st November. All eyes will be on the Boks as the tournament unfolds, and the nation will watch with bated breath to see if the boys in green and gold can once again bring home the prize.

Head First A Spotlight on Mental Wellness Text: Wilma den Hartigh Images © iStockphoto.com

Each year the month of October is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and reducing the stigma that people with mental illness are often subjected to. But is 30 days really enough? Statistics raise a red flag about the mental health of South Africans. What Do the Statistics Say? The World Health Organisation (WHO) predicts that depression will become the leading cause of disability worldwide by 2030. The statistics about the state of South Africans’ mental health are sobering and reflect these global trends. According to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), as many as one in six South Africans live with anxiety, depression or substance-abuse problems. These figures do not include more serious conditions such as Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia.

Earlier this year a study by health and economic research company, Hexor, revealed that 24% of South Africa’s workforce had been diagnosed with depression in the past 12 months. The research focussed on people between the ages of 18 and 64, ranging from support staff to executive level employees. Tienie Stander, CEO of Hexor, explains that the aim of the study was not to determine the cause of the participants’ depression, but to understand just how serious the problem is. The study found that skills, field of expertise, job ranking or income bracket did not play

Indwe 115

a role in the prevalence of depression. “Depression is a non-discriminatory disease, and it affects everybody in the same way,” Stander says. A statement by the South African College of Applied Psychiatry says that South Africans also have to cope with unique challenges, such as high rates of crime and motor vehicle accidents. If these are taken into consideration, up to six million South Africans could suffer from posttraumatic stress disorders.

Finding Solutions to Achieve Mental Wellness There are many debates around depression and the use of medication for treatment. Not everyone who is depressed needs to take antidepressants, but SADAG argues that the issue is more complicated and cannot be viewed so simplistically. Treating depression should be viewed holistically, and antidepressants are only part of the solution. This time of the year mental wellness becomes even more compromised. With only three months left until the end of the year, people may feel burnt out and be struggling with their workload. Many people also have to deal with anxiety about how to afford that December holiday or pay off debt. People also experience festive stress as they start planning their year-end break. Dr Colinda Linde, a clinical psychologist who specialises in stress management, explains that stress occurs when “perceived demands are greater than our coping resources”. She says that there are different types of stress. Chronic stress (such as illness which remains constant over time), perennial stress (an example of this is Christmas, which occurs periodically) and “hassles”, which are the little things that, when compounded, can be even worse than one main stressor. Many experts on mental wellness support the practice of writing or journaling to deal with depression and to manage overwhelming emotions. And you don’t have to

116 Indwe

be a literary genius to do this. Amy Kaye, founder of Write On!, a company in Cape Town that offers creative writing courses and workshops designed to encourage self-discovery and -expression, says that writing is a cathartic and therapeutic process. “It helps us to unpack what is going on psychologically and emotionally, and can help unblock unconscious fears through creative self-expression,” Kaye says. “By writing down your thoughts, you can gain clarity and be more self aware.” She says that modern lifestyles are busy and rushed, which leaves very little time for self reflection. “Writing helps us to slow down and become more present,” she explains.

Getting Started Kaye says that the first step is to set aside time for this activity, even if this means you write in the car when you are early for a meeting, or if you are on a flight. “If you want to write, you have to make writing a part of your daily schedule. It’s a habit that must be formed,” she says. Cut down on activities that can steal valuable writing time. “Get off social media, turn your phone off whenever you have a spare moment, and stop watching TV or browsing the Internet more than necessary,” she advises. Carry a notebook and pen with you and create a schedule of 10 minutes each day to write down your thoughts, feelings, and observations. It is all about finding your own voice. Then, write what comes naturally. “The films or plays you see, or the books you read are a good indicator of the kinds of styles or genres you might be interested in. The more you read, the better. As a writer, reading is essential,” she says. Use October to discover techniques that can help boost your mindfulness and release tension when life gets busy. Identify activities that make you happy and do more of that – as long as it isn’t detrimental to your health. What is important is to find ways to balance your stress and emotions.

Eye Spy Why Eye Examinations Are Important Text: Supplied Images Š iStockphoto.com

With World Sight Day on 8 th October and National Eye Care Awareness Month taking place until 18th October, it’s worth taking the time to take proper care of your eyes and to prioritise your eye health, not just this month, but throughout your life.

Indwe 119

Mellins i-Style, (www.mellins.co.za) a leading national chain of optometrists, suggests six reasons why you should look after your eyes and have regular eye examinations:

– many of which can be successfully treated if detected early enough. Your eyes will also be checked to see how they work together as a “team”.

• Should you lose your eyesight, it may never be reversed. • Good vision allows a better quality of life. • Unlike toothache, your eyes don’t necessarily ache when something is wrong. • An eye examination can detect early signs of serious eye conditions. • An eye examination includes a general health check for injuries and abnormalities. • The earlier the detection of a problem, the better the chance of successful treatment. • Optometrists are often the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol.

“Optometrists generally recommend that most people should get their eyes tested every two years,” advises Horn. In some circumstances, however, optometrists may recommend more frequent eye examinations, especially if you: • Are a child wearing spectacles • Have diabetes • Are older than 40 years and have a family history of glaucoma • Are aged 70 and older

“Regular eye examinations are important, regardless of one’s age or overall health,” says Andre Horn, a senior optometrist and managing director of Mellins i-Style. During an eye test, an optometrist doesn’t just examine the quality of your vision and whether you need spectacles or contact lenses or an adjusted prescription. An eye test will also include a general health check for any eye injuries, abnormalities and early signs of eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration before you’re aware of any symptoms

120 Indwe

Having a Zeiss Experience eye examination at one of the Mellins-Zeiss Vision Centres countrywide is a great health check. Your eyes are as unique as you are and have an individual “fingerprint”. During the assessment, the Zeiss i.Profiler reads approximately 2,500 points on your eye in less than 90 seconds, and this “fingerprint” produces arguably the most individualised lens in the world, namely Zeiss i.Scription. It offers up to 30 % improvement of vision at night and in low light, and a dramatic improvement in colour and contrast discernment.

For more eye care tips and advice visit www.mellins.co.za.

Proud to be Building Africa for 60 Years

• Approximately 285 million people worldwide live with compromised vision and blindness. • Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment. • 90 % of blind people live in low-income countries. • 80 % of visual impairment is avoidable, in other words, readily treatable and/or preventable. • Restoration of sight and blindness prevention strategies are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care. • The number of people blinded due to infectious causes has greatly reduced in the past 20 years. • An estimated 19 million children are visually impaired. • About 65 % of all people who are visually impaired are aged 50 and older, while this age group comprises only 20 % of the world’s population. • Increasing elderly populations in many countries mean that more people will be at risk of agerelated visual impairment.

My coronary arteries were occluded and I had a heart attack at the age of 32. The prescribed cholesterol medication didn’t work for me and I was afraid that I was going to die early. One to Swatch

Sw a t c h loves art and working with artists. The most recent contributor to the world’s largest art gallery on the wrist is renowned artist Soonja Han, who has dedicated her artistic life to the circle, exploring its fundamental simplicity in a great variety of ways, from painting and drawing to sculpture and video. Circles influence her new work for Swatch as well. “This is My Map” (SUOZ1985S) presents a multi-coloured map of the world. From the dial it reaches across the bezel to the tips of the strap. Coloured circles appear at different spots on the map, and orange hour, minute and second hands offer a bright contrast as they sweep across the dial. The new Swatch Art Special comes in special packaging, a round box covered with the same multi-coloured map and more coloured circles. The watch will be available in a limited numbered edition of 2,525 pieces from Swatch stores nationwide. www.swatch.com

Megastructures and Masterminds

Rachel Weeping

By Tony Murray

Rachel Nyaga, a Mozambican domestic worker living in Johannesburg, is forced to make a life-changing decision after her young daughter dies while under the care of her South African employers. She can either leave her job and return to poverty stricken Mozambique, or continue working for the people responsible for the death of her child. Trapped by circumstance, she decides to stay, but things become even more complicated when she finds out that the Jordaans are expecting their first child. Rachel Weeping is a contemporary drama that explores the themes of motherhood, loss and forgiveness through the experience of three victims of a horrible accident.

Megastructures and Masterminds takes you inside some of the most remarkable construction projects in Southern Africa. Each chapter is a fascinating look into the construction of major structures, including the Du Toitskloof Pass and the Huguenot Tunnel, as well as the Victoria Falls Bridge, Kariba Dam, Durban harbour and the Agulhas lighthouse. It also tells the stories of the civil engineers behind these projects, and how through imagination, inspiration, persistence and technical expertise they literally changed the face of Southern Africa.

What’s Wrong With Management and How to Get It Right By Tony Manning The role and responsibilities of business today are different than they were in the past. More than any other social institution, it is businesses that will determine our future. Yet companies worldwide continue to underperform. In his latest book, top strategy consultant Tony Manning brings managers the insights and advice they need for the coming decades of turbulence and hyper-competition. Drawing lessons from 100 years of management history, he highlights the failure of the management advice industry to produce new ideas, showing how most management theory is distracting, rather than helpful. He then identifies eight critical strategy practices that have stood the test of time, and explains how to apply them. Based on extensive research and practical experience, this fascinating and practical advice is a must-read for anyone interested in improving business results.

Meet the Crew Text & Image © Supplied

Have you ever wondered who is flying the plane when you travel on SA Express? Or wanted to know more about what a job as a cabin crew member is like? Well, now’s your chance! Every month we will introduce a few members of our SA Express family, because by getting to know them, you become part of the SA Express family too. Lizette van der Riet Senior Cabin Crew Member Length of Service: I have been a cabin crew member at SA Express since August 1997.

What do you find most challenging about your job? Getting up at 03h30 in the middle of winter and looking like you are loving every minute of it – which you perfect with years of practice!

Tell us more about yourself. I am extremely fortunate to be living out my passion of being a flight attendant. I am fun-loving and easy-going, but I also like to be organised and disciplined.

Why do you like working for SA Express? Once again, the flexibility. Plus most of your colleagues are friends, more than just someone you are working with for the day. It makes an 11 hour day so much easier.

What is your favourite part of your job? I like the flexibility of my working hours. I have days off during the week instead of only on weekends, which enables me to get involved in things like the volunteer work I recently did at the Drakenstein Lion Park (www.lionrescue.org.za) and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds or SANCCOB (www.sanccob.co.za). Both are internationally acclaimed non-profit organisations that help with the rehabilitation of animals and seabirds that have been rescued from horrific captivity or are ill, have been injured, abandoned, or are endangered. Drakenstein Lion Park provides lifetime care to all the animals it rescues, and provides them with an environment where they can live out their lives in dignity. Independent research confirms that the African penguin population is 19 % higher thanks to SANCCOB’s oil wildlife response efforts. They also train people to care for birds, and they educate the public to develop behavioural patterns to benefit marine life. They have treated more than 90,000 penguins since being established in 1968.

What would people find surprising about your job? The training we go through. Many people don’t realise that we are not just there to hand out peanuts and serve drinks. It is a very fortunate fact that half the training we go through on a regular basis will probably never have to be put to the test. Like fire fighting, CPR and other aspects of First Aid when there is nobody medically qualified to help you, as well as emergency and evacuation drills. We play nursemaid to the sick, temporary mom or dad to the unaccompanied minors, and reassure those who are terrified of flying.

134 Indwe

Have you ever had any funny incidents or encounters in your job? I had a flight I did “for fun” years ago when I wore a very expensive and natural-looking wig and my colleagues did not recognise me until I opened my mouth. What a giggle we had!

We Fly For You SA Express Airways prides itself on aiming to offer incomparable service standards. In addition to building on our motto to express excellence and consistently striving to provide the best service, we know that “you” is the most important word in our airline. SA Express proudly launched its new brand on 2 December 2009 at OR Tambo International Airport. The new brand is set to ensure that it’s distinctive and positioned to build awareness and affinity in the domestic and regional markets. The new proposition “We Fly for You” is set to position SA Express as a premier intraregional African brand. The main objective of the re-brand is to ensure that SA Express is distinctive yet still aligned to the country’s mainline carrier. SA Express’s unique positioning as an airline that provides a bespoke, personalised travel experience was the rationale behind the proposition “We Fly for You”. The new brand mark is in line with the symbol and colours of the national flag, encouraging national pride. The new brand will be applied to all brand touch-points throughout the operation as well as the staff uniform.

Your hand luggage will be waiting for you as you disembark from the aircraft at your destination. Awards SA Express has won the AFRAA Regional Airline of the Year Award at the end of 2009, and the Allied and Aviation Business Corporate Award. Our airline was also the recipient of the Annual Airline Reliability Award from Bombardier at the end of 2007. Other previous awards include the International Star Quality Award, which indicates our commitment to service excellence, while our prominence as one of the top 500 best managed companies is proof of our success as a business. Onboard service The airline’s onboard service is unique and offers passengers a variety of meals or snacks. Passengers can also enjoy a wine and malt service on specified flights as well as refreshments on all flights. Light snacks will be served on selected flights. Our customers can expect a safe, comfortable, quality air-travel experience, with the added benefits of frequency, reliability, on-time departures and unmatched value for money.

Passenger Letters Excellent Service I recently flew from Johannesburg to Cape Town and then from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. I had never done this trip previously, but had heard about the discomfort of travelling on small planes. I was expecting the worst, especially as I struggle with cabin pressure changes and the effect it has on my ears. However, I was pleasantly surprised several times on this trip. It started with check-in at Cape Town. The consultant at the check-in counter took the trouble to notice the fatigue on my face and offered to seat me at the front of the plane to provide me with extra leg space and to ensure that I disembarked as quickly as possible. I was very appreciative of this. At the boarding gates, three of my colleagues were slightly delayed and the staff members were really helpful by getting the bus to the plane to wait a few minutes for them. Again I was impressed. The flight was pleasant, to say the least, and there was not even any sign of blockages in my ears. The cabin crew were amazing and as if that were not enough, I was the first to disembark and my baggage was already waiting at the carousel for me when I got there. Thank you SA Express – clearly the little brother with the BIG heart. I have now changed my mind about the so-called small planes on your routes. Fareed Mohammed Khan Congratulations to Fareed Mohammed Khan, who wrote our winning letter this month. He has won an American Tourister’s Bon Air 55 cm spinner valued at R1,399.

Good day I recently flew from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth and would like to compliment Mr Vakele Sitshinga, our cabin attendant, who was so nice and helpful. After offering me something to drink, he even came back to ask if I was fine. He must keep up this standard, as his service was excellent. He deserves an award, as it was my first time flying and I was rather stressed, but his friendliness helped me to relax and enjoy the flight. Regards Lusanda Mazinyo
