2017 Blue Leadership Ball 2017 Award Recipients
On Friday, November 17, hundreds of Bulldog faithful gathered in New Haven to celebrate Yale Athletics and to proudly honor the 2017 recipients of the George H.W. Bush Lifetime of Leadership Award Recipients: Abigail Disney ’82, Dick Jauron ’73, Carole Stanyar ’78, Dr. Geoff Tabin ’78, and Joseph Tsai ’86. Each of these outstanding individuals were honored for their personal and professional leadership contributions to their respective fields. The evening featured a festive, pre-dinner reception with signature cocktails, a vibrant silent auction, and a moving program with featured honoree videos. It also included a reflection of Tom Beckett’s time at Yale from President Peter Salovey followed by a moving tribute video. It was a special evening for all of Yale Athletics, honoring the many proud leaders among our ranks.

Ivy League Football
Champions
The crowning of the 2017 Ivy League Champions came after a dominating defensive performance before a crowd of 51,426 in the 134th edition of The Game. Yale, which earned its first outright league title since 1980 and its first Ivy crown since 2006, sacked Harvard quarterbacks six times and limited its offense to 164 total yards in a 24-3 victory over the Crimson. The Bulldogs, whose consecutive wins in The Game are the first for the school since 1999 and 2000, had champagne and cigars after putting together a complete, team effort that brought their record to 9-1, 6-1 Ivy. The Yale Bulldogs had eight players named to the All-Ivy League first-team, the most since the 1977 champions placed the same number on the top team. Four on both sides of the line were named to the Ancient Eight's first squad, and one of them, running back Zane Dudek, was rookie of the year. The Bulldogs' first-team picks on offense were offensive linemen Jon Bezney and Karl Marback, tight end Jaeden
Graham and Dudek. The defense included secondary members Spencer Rymiszewski and Hayden Carlson, lineman John Herubin and linebacker Matthew Oplinger. Senior linebacker, Matthew Oplinger, was announced as the Asa S. Bushnell Cup recipient. The last time a Yale defensive player was the most valuable player in the Ivy League was 37 years ago. The senior was the leader of and most dominant player on the league's top defensive team, one that ranked 8th in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with just over 15 points allowed per game. He led the Ancient Eight and was second in the country in sacks. Yale, which had 20 overall picked by the league coaches for all-star honors, and earned a national ranking of No. 24 in the FCS STATS and FCS Coaches polls.
Volleyball Yale Volleyball won its sixth Ivy League Volleyball title in the last eight years. It was the eighth conference title in the last 15 years for the Bulldogs. Unfortunately, Yale dropped the Ivy League Playoff match against Princeton to earn the Ivy League's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Junior Kate Swanson was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, first-year Kathryn Attar was named Rookie of the Year. Swanson, who earned an All-Ivy spot for the second straight year, has a 4.58 digs per set average for 2017 that stands to be the seventh highest single-season average in Yale history. Attar closed out the conference regular season third in the Ivy League with 3.29 kills per set and averaged 4.00 kills per set over Yale's last six matches with a conference title on the line. Attar is the sixth Bulldog to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Year under head coach Erin Appleman.
A total of five members of the 2017 Ivy League Champion Bulldogs were named All-Ivy selections. Swanson and Attar were also named First Team All-Ivy, while sophomores Franny Arnaurou and Tristin Kott were named to the second team. Junior Kelley Wirth was an honorable mention. Head coach Erin Appleman completed her 15th season at the helm of the Bulldogs with a career record of 270-103. In her time at Yale, the Bulldogs own the best 167-43 conference record among all Ancient Eight volleyball programs.
Updates from
Ray Tompkins House
Carol Roberts Field House
In September alumni, friends and family of Yale Athletics gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of Carol Roberts Field House. Both the softball and field hockey teams joined supporters for a ceremony honoring the special facility which will become the home of their programs. The field house will include spacious locker rooms, a training room, a satellite coaches' office, a team meeting space and a second-story observation roof deck featuring a glass-walled event space. It is set to open in 2018.
Baseball and Softball Facilities Updates This fall the facilities for the baseball and softball programs received a major upgrade with the installation of field turf. The work on Yale Field and DeWitt Family Field began in earnest in November, and both facilities are set to be completed before the start of the spring seasons. The update will allow our programs to defy the limits of weather in New England and offer the best training and competition experience for our student-athletes.
Farewell to Nadine Logan
