Show Me A VILT Then? I Don’t Know What It Is! Example: Advanced Coaching Session Via Virtual Classroom “I had a conversation with Elodie but I ended up getting into the detail and telling her exactly how it should be done. I’ve still got a long way to go to get her to be more self sufficient”

“I used the PRO model, loosely, to give some feedback and he is now far better prepared for client meetings. Now I’m not sure what approach to take as I don’t want to keep having to be so directive.”

Mikogo Orientation Events (Pre-Work For VILT Courses) Mikogo Orientation comprises of: V-instructor set-up and ‘testing’

Participant set-up and ‘testing’

Testing understanding

Commentary: Mikogo Orientation will take up to 30 minutes (possibly more) and this will ‘eat into’ the Module 1 of each VILT session on each subject area that is migrating from ILT to VILT Consideration should be given to a pre-recorded Mikogo Orientation session prior to attendance on VILT Module 1 for each subject area. The composition of the Mikogo Orientation is outlined below – these are fundamental aspects that the participant end-user has to know prior to effective VILT delivery.

CONTEXT SETTING & SESSION 1/MODULE 1 (40 MINS) CONTEXT SETTING & VIRTUAL INTRODUCTIONS • Welcome, Objectives, Testing Mikogo & dealing with any technical issues (conducted by Client Technical Support) • Capturing Personal Objectives and sharing experiences without naming individual participants. •Instructor led-introduction to the 6 stages of problem solving – the ‘golden thread’ of whole VILT module .

STAGE 1: IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM •Instructor-led introduction to developing problem definitions and outlining the ‘desired outcome’. Give example of a problem definition and desired outcome and use ‘send private message’ to VILT Facilitator to collate responses and summarise 2-3 participants problem definitions. •The associated methodology/tool introduced at this stage is SOWHAT (variation on traditional SWOT), with participants using Workbook (or to use the Whiteboard to write a problem definition and desired outcomes using their analysis on a current business ‘problem’ or issue that they have.

Line manager conversations recommended to ground learning in business objectives 1 x VILT modules (90 mins following the 6 Stage Problem Solving model (the first three stages) and introducing key concepts and tools along the way Application planning based on ‘real life’ scenarios at end of 1 st VILT module – any short-term ‘fixes’ that can be applied in two-week gap between VILT Module 1 and VILT Module 2

SESSION 2/ MODULE 1 (20 MINS) STAGE 2: DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM • Instructor-led introduction to root cause

SESSION 3/ MODULE 1 (20 MINS) STAGE 3: GENERATE SOLUTIONS • Instructor-led session on getting creative

• Participant interactive session where they analysis and associated tools – why/why (problem/solution trees and process have to draw the solutions to the ‘Nine Dots’ mapping). puzzle, followed by brainstorming Application • Solution Tree virtual activity – participants Planning techniques. • Wacky Inventions exercise – to think of an to use ‘Why Race Horse Can’t Win’ example and then individually to draw a Solution Tree “unusual” invention. To elicit the point that diagram for a work-based problem and more people generate more ideas and helps investigating the root cause. you to break your traditional thinking patterns • Instructor-led introduction to process to the mindsets of others. • Instructor-led introduction to SCAMPER mapping and using voting buttons for questions about process mapping (do you do problem-solving/idea generation tool and it, scalability test etc. –with group ‘comments work through as a group an example, as a board’ and responses from the VILT manufacturer/supplier of nuts and bolts for Facilitator and transition/link with component parts of client products that need brainstorming, which is covered in Session 3, these items. • Group comments/answer to ‘what are your Module 1. barriers to creativity – can ‘feed’ into application planning. Pass the microphone to 2-3 participants for identified actions from the learning event.

• Individually, to apply tools and techniques learned so far to current workplace ‘problems’ – resist getting to the solution and use SCAMPER to generate new thinking. • Come prepared with your SCAMPER example for the beginning of VILT Module 2 on problem solving and decision making. • Set up group chat-forum/email group/ action learning sets/learning support groups. • Also to work on Solution Tree diagram creation for an example like working better effectively as a team with problem-solving and decision-making. • Set up meeting to discuss bridge assignment with line manager and how to create a creative SCAMPER solution to a problem and to test their experiences of using these tools and how easy they can be to introduce and has proven effective as key messages.

CONTEXT SETTING, REVIEW& SESSION 1/ MODULE 2 (35 MINS) CONTEXT SETTING & MODULE 1 REVIEW • Welcome, Objectives for this session, Testing Mikogo & dealing with any technical issues (conducted by Client technical support) • Review of bridge assignment and sent, either by word-document, scanned jpg (loaded in advance of the second session onto Mikogo in order for the Moderator to review/evaluate the bridge assignment activities) or using Insert function on Mikogo Participant Application Whole-group review of progress so far – mixture of audio and typed comments input. Scalability check on participant evaluation of problem solving and decision-making skills so far. STAGE 4: SELECT SOLUTION • Instructor led-introduction of a core technique employed when selecting a solution, the Impact/Hassle Matrix • Use drawing tool and submit an Impact Hassle Matrix for selecting a solution (decision making) Moderator and group to make comments on.

Line manager conversations recommended to ground learning in business objectives 1 x VILT modules (90 mins following the 6 Stage Problem Solving model (the second-half of the six stages) and introducing key concepts and tools along the way Bridge assignment/’scalability’ voting analysis of success of completing the assignment and implementing their actions already – moving to Level 2 Evaluation to test learning at skills, knowledge and behavioural/mindset ‘shifts’.

SESSION 2/ MODULE 2 (25 MINS) STAGE 4: SELECT SOLUTION CONT// • Stakeholder mapping and stakeholder POWER/IMPACT matrix completion using Workbook (or by completing what would go in each quadrant in the comments box).

STAGE 5: IMPLEMENT SOLUTION • Instructor-led introduction to the solution execution and the questions that should be asked at this stage? • Selling the solution to gain commitment to proposed implementers and the four Ps (presenting your case) – Moderator to introduce the four Ps. • Sell your solution activity where participants have to use Workbook to construct a 4P framework (in essence a presentation framework to ‘sell’ and communicate the solution). • Group question on preparing for the unexpected and contingency planning – sharing Whiteboard suggestions sent from participants.

SESSION 3/ MODULE 2 (20 MINS) STAGE 6: MONITOR & EVALUATE • Instructor-led session on monitoring with group questions and comments/voting used and barriers to monitoring. - Have we solved the problem? - Can we improve on what we have done? • Evaluation of solution using Edward de Bono’s six thinking hats to ‘creatively’ evaluate and monitor the solution using lateral thinking. • Instructor-led ‘best practise’ example and then participants to complete six hats thinking to evaluate the solutions they have and then a six hats quiz, to test application and ‘meaning’ behind each of the six hats. Practise with ‘real’ example. • De Bono Hats course evaluation activity, where participants write what they have learned from this course in each of the six hats by using the microphone and/or Feedback Pane.

Participant Workbook – Concepts & Models + Action Plans & Learning Journal

MODULE CLOSE (10 MINS) Post-Work Activity: Take a work based issue and work through the 6 Stage Problem Solving process and share with line manager. Creating a culture of creativity. Application Planning Where could you use these models in the workplace? Where will you use these models in the workplace?
