Life Landscapes is responsible for the maintenance of all common areas in the Estate, including the main and second entrances, all islands, sidewalks and gardens around the Home Owners offices as well as the Clubhouse. Since March 2014, Life Landscapes has completed several projects to enhance the Estate's gardens and will continue to do so in order to serve the best interests of the residents by providing world-class landscaping and maintenance services to boost the home owners’ equity and overall worth of the Estate. Life Landscapes aims to continuously implement water-wise and organic approaches to landscape
maintenance with the use of organic fertilisers and integrated pest management practices. The focus is on maximising the use of water and minimising the use of harmful chemicals. The Estate has been nominated for an award the SALI (South African Landscapers Institute) Awards of Excellence 2015. Each year the Institute receives hundreds of entries from across the country in various categories. The Estate has been entered for the category Landscape Maintenance and the first round of judging has recently taken place. We wish Life Landscapes good luck with this entry and will keep you posted on the results later this year.

The Rufous-naped Lark Die Rooineklewerik (Mirafra africana)
The Rufous-naped lark is a Southern African bird that belongs to the Alaudidae family group which includes birds such as Larks and Sparrowlarks.
Distribution Map
The Rufous-naped lark is commonly found in the northern and eastern areas of South Africa. They live in a variety of open habitats such as savanna, open woodland, fallow fields and open ground near cultivated land. Males can often be heard singing from the tops of bushes and poles. Fluttering display flights accompanied by a jumbled song often include mimicry of other species’ calls. Their diet consists mainly of invertebrates like insects, earthworms, and spiders but also seeds of grasses and some flowering plants. They forage for food mostly on the ground. They are monogamous, which means that they find and breed with only one partner for the rest of its life. The nest is built of dry grass, straw and leaves and lined with finer plant material. It is usually placed in a hollow in the ground at the base of a shrub or grass tuft. Egg-laying season peaks from October to February and they lay 2-3 eggs which they incubate for 14-15 days. The female broods the chicks and does most of their feeding. The chicks will leave the nest after 10-12 days and before they are able to fly.
The Rufous-naped lark is characterised by a small, erectile crest, rufous nape and a fairly long brown coloured bill. They are 1518 cm long and weighs 3450g. They have orangebrown back- and patches on the wings and pink legs, but the plumage varies regionally and is generally paler in more arid areas. The male and female’s features are only slightly different.

CAPTAIN’s report To all of you who participated in Club Champs, I say, “Well done and thank you for your commitment”. Barring some afternoon thunder showers on the first day of the Ladies, Junior’s and Vets Club Champs that forced the cancelation of day 1, the rest of the tournament and the following weekends main Club Champs went off without a hitch. I mentioned at both prize givings and want to reiterate, that we had the privilege of playing on a course that was in magnificent condition, and credit must go to Petrie and his team for their efforts. A full list of all the winners is posted elsewhere in the Interface, but our congratulations must go to A Van Der Knaap who won this year’s 2015 Club Championships on a score of 136 (-8). He played flawless golf all weekend, and was a deserved winner. The ladies winner was G Switala who shot level par, the Junior champion was J V D Merwe and the Vets champion was D Piek who won on the 1st playoff hole! As is custom, we were treated to a wonderful lunch after the respective prize givings followed by some liquid refreshments. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. We are fast approaching that time of the year that the seasons are changing. I am sure that the early rises amongst you have already noticed the dropping temperatures and the frost
on the cars. It will soon be time for the morning field to migrate to the afternoon in search of warmer weather and this is also the time of the year when the ladies can suddenly find another 40 meters on a drive and reach some holes in regulation. I know of a number of people that can’t wait! If you are still going to be playing in the morning, I would suggest that you pop into Jannes to buy the required thermals. The next monthly Captains Challenge is scheduled for 30 May. Please don’t forget to support Hokaai for all your needs – they really go out of their way to help us after all!

HOKAAI Captain's Challenge Saturday, 27 March 2015 saw Hamish Mckee finished his reign as Club Captain by handing over two fabulous flat screen TV’s for the patio. This, of course, was the finale to a fabulous Hokaai Captain’s Challenge. We started the day with a shotgun start at 07h30 and the format was a four ball alliance, scramble drive which was extremely well received and thoroughly enjoyed! Congratulations to all the players who took part. The event was won by the team of B. Boshoff, L. Boshoff, E. Venske and K. Venske. In second place was the team of J. Bronkhorst, J. Wickens, P. Van Der Westhuizen and R. Bronkhorst.

On Saturday, 20 March 2015 we hosted the second Mercedes Benz Betterball Challenge. The day was, once again, very well represented with players filling the field with much anticipation. Congratulations to the overall winners, Colin Carter and his son who will be spending a weekend in a demo Mercedes vehicle. If you are slightly curios, ask Sue and Brett Smith who rode around in a superb GLA last weekend. Sue, I must say‌ it suits you! During this event, Johan Coetzer had the perfect shot on the 11th! A hole in one on the toughest par 3 on the golf course, using a 3 iron! Awesome! Congratulations!

Tee up, golf is good! It’s one of a few ball games that doesn’t require a standardised playing area and 2016 will be the first year that golf is included in the Olympics – it’s finally getting recognised as an official sport. Golfers around the globe would agree that the game is demanding, requiring physical exertion and co-ordination. Athletic ability, strength, endurance, strategy and mental toughness are the attributes every good golfer learns. In addition to this, the significant health and wellness benefits are overwhelmingly evident. With the equivalent of walking 18 holes being an 8 km walk or a 5 to 6 km run, walking the golf course across various terrains can burn up to 1 500 calories*. In addition to this, the average golfer will exceed 10 000 steps in a round which meets the recommended guidelines for daily exercise. Walking an 18 hole course three to five times a week will give you the optimal exercise needed for your heart, reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and if you pull your clubs along or carry them, you’ll burn even more calories. Any regular player can use golf to help them stay fit, improve muscle tone and endurance as well as lose weight and body fat. Without realising it, your fun morning or afternoon in a beautiful setting such as Woodhill, is helping you keep your body in optimal shape.

Of course, let’s not ignore or forget the mental fitness golf provides. A round with a group of friends is a great way to keep in touch, reducing stress whilst enjoying an open and natural environment and of course, creating a sense of community. Participating in golf days allows you the opportunity to meet new people and broaden your contact base. Another notable study conducted by the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden)** found that the death rate for golfers is 40% less than of other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status. This equates to a 5 year increase in life expectancy for regular golfers. Now that we’ve established that getting in shape is fun and easy to do if you actively play golf, remember to treat it as you would any other sport. A proper warm-up is key and eating healthy to keep your body mentally and physically sharp for each shot is a must. Get out onto your beautiful course – walking 9 or 18 holes helps oxygenate the body, improve your posture and
renew your spirit – all the things any good sport gives you! So to all you avid golfers, make sure you drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep and practice, practice, practice because golf is teeing up to be the next big sport. *Research conducted by Neil Wolkodoff of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences (Denver, Colo.) was used to show roughly how many calories were burned playing an average 9-hole golf course. According to the article golfers who walk and carry their own bag burn 721 calories, golfers using a pull cart burn 718 calories, golfers walking with a caddie burn 613 calories and golfers riding in a golf cart burn 411 calories on average. **This study was published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports and is based on data compiled from studying 300,000 Swedish golfers.
Interesting facts about the Health benefits of golf The World Golf Foundation and Golf 20/20 commissioned The Walker Research Group to identify and report on the body of literature pertaining to the health and wellness benefits of golf participation.
Key Findings – Health Related Benefits: ❍ A walked 18-hole round, carrying a bag or using a hand/pull cart, is approximately equal to a 5-mile walk. ❍ The total caloric expenditure for an 18-hole round is approximately 2,000 calories for walking while carrying clubs and 1,300 calories when riding in a cart. ❍ Since walking is biomechanically more efficient than running, playing an 18-hole round of golf walking is roughly equivalent to a 3.5 to 4-mile run. ❍ When walking 18-holes of golf, blood glucose levels fall by up to 20% for the young, 10% for the middle-aged and 30% for the elderly players, and body weight is slightly reduced for all groups. ❍ Repeated golf practice enhances balance control and confidence among all age ranges. ❍ Older golfers tend to have better static and dynamic balance control and confidence than non-golfing older, healthy adults. ❍ Regardless of handicap, sex, or course played, golfers exceed 10,000 steps during a typical round of golf – which meets the guideline for exercise recommended by most medical and clinical physicians.
