EDITOR’S LETTER! Winter is here! Although winter is not my favourite season of the year (I’m sure most of you feel the same way), I have to admit that the beautiful early winter mornings filled with frost and mist have made for some spectacular views of our Estate. In this issue we have included a winter gardening article from Life Landscapes and from our cover picture you would have noticed how the glorious colours of yellow, green and red of our entrance gardens are helping to keep the dreary winter browns at bay. I, for one, have enjoyed this clever piece of landscaping. It seems our golfers haven’t let the winter chill phase them as there have been many golfing events of late. It’s wonderful to see our members enjoying themselves and often, raising money for charity at the same time. Our club not only extends to golf but other social functions too so be sure to look out for upcoming notices on events that everyone can enjoy.
It’s wonderful to live in a close knit community and to get to know each other well. Sadly, we’ve recently had to say our goodbye’s to two very well-known residents. Our condolences extend to the families of Vernon Nadel and Wim Skinner as they are both remembered fondly in editorial pieces placed in this issue. The Feedback Report on the AGM is testament to the good standing and well-oiled machine of management, staff and board members who run our Estate. We look forward to working together towards another year of success. With more exciting projects and changes in the pipeline, our next few issues of Interface will be well anticipated as we keep you in the loop. ‘Till next month
Tracey

CONDOLENCES Vernon Nadel I knew Vernon for more than 35 years, going back to the late 70’s in SAA, where he worked as a Flight Dispatcher. Vernon was well known for his neat and accurate flight plans, written in that neat distinctive handwriting we all got to know, even in later years when he did duty as Hoof Bleshoender here at Centurion Country Club. During the 80’s he was selected as one of only eight candidates from more than 600 applicants for Management training. Finishing top of the class, he soon was on his way as Trainee Manager in Taipei. After the required tour as Trainee Manager, he did duty in several cities. Then, in August 1994, he was given the task of opening and settling a station in the bustling city of Miami. Operating from his hotel room was a huge task which I can attest to as I was one of the first flights into Miami. Due to technical problems we had to layover and Vernon had to accommodate 365 passengers at very short notice. This, and many other duties later on, he performed with excellence. He later served as Manager of all foreign carriers at Jan Smuts Airport, until retirement. Here at Centurion Country Club he was well known for his friendly demeanour and was one of the founder members of the Bleshoenders, holding the strange record of the player with the highest and the lowest points score for a round of golf. He will surely be remembered and missed by all.
Willie van der Lingen Wim Skinner (November 1936 - May 2016) On Tuesday, 24 May 2016, we said our final goodbyes to Wim Skinner. Wim was born and bred in Pretoria and left his mark on the academic world as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria (Tuks).
Wim and his wife, Anna, moved into their property in Centurion Residential and Golf Estate in 1998 and immediately became involved in the community. He was a founder of the Bleshoenders golfing community as well as the bridge club. Wim was well-informed and knowledgeable about many things. As an example of his continuous need to improve his knowledge and matching it with his engineering precision, he once sent me a copy of his version of the history of the world, which he painstakingly condensed to only a few pages. To sum up the essence of Wim would take an entire book to do him justice, but I will attempt to it with the following few words: • Wim the academic: If anybody had any question of anything scientific or otherwise, he was the man we asked and, after careful thought and research, he would give a clear and concise answer that we could all understand. • Wim the philosopher: He lived by a strong moral code but was never judgemental about anybody else’s views. He had amazing knowledge about local and international affairs and we often had long debates about these subjects. • Wim the sportsman: He was a total gentleman on and off the golf course and his scorecard was, without a doubt, the neatest of anybody’s cards. He knew the rules of golf and his etiquette was impeccable. In his younger years, Wim took up judo, whilst also having played tennis for an extended period. Wim was also an excellent bridge player and won our club competition more than anybody else, without ever criticising a weaker player.
9
We are thankful for the full and rich life that Wim enjoyed and shared with us. He found pleasure in so many things - lovely music, a fun party, a good day on the golf course. We will always remember how he used to often say that something was “darem so blerrie lekker” (‘’blerrie’’ was the only strong word I ever heard him say). Wim was an example to all of us, a good husband to Anna, as well as a good father to his children and grandchildren. Wim and Anna had a wonderful relationship and they understood each other very well. If Wim ever partied too much, Anna just had to say, ‘’Wimpie’’ and he got the message! As Wim’s friends, we would like to thank Anna for the wonderful way in which she looked after him until the very end. Wim, your family and all your friends are going to miss you terribly but we will never forget you.

TREES ARE BARE, PLANTS ARE DORMANT - BUT THERE IS STILL LIFE!
The chilly nights and frosts will most likely slow down plant growth dramatically during the coming months. Follow these few tips to give your winter garden new life! Winter work
Winter watering Remember to water your winter and spring flowering shrubs and trees regularly. Although watering is a low priority in winter, you cannot stop watering altogether, especially winter-flowering plants like azaleas, magnolias, flowering quinces, wisterias, confetti bushes and emerging spring bulbs. Keep watering over-seeded lawns and those planted with cool season grass, for continuous growth throughout winter.
Ensure that your gutters are clean and check that all your standard plants and young trees are securely staked and tied (ensure that old ties are not cutting into the bark of your plants). Tie in creepers, August is famously windy so make sure that vulnerable plants are properly supported before the big blow begins. Now is the time to begin applying compost and organic fertilisers. Consider natural microbial products which improve soil structure and health, enabling plants to take up nutrients more efficiently.

PRESIDENT’S TROPHY 2016 Our annual anniversary weekend took place with the President’s Trophy on a very rainy Saturday, 14 May 2016. A few brave souls took on the wet weather and soldiered on with dark grey clouds in the air but this is such an important event in our golfing calendar that no one wanted to miss it. The attendees were spoiled with a lovely hearty meal in the pub after golf and the chill was driven out of their bones in the cosy Clubhouse.

BIRD WATCHERS PARADISE
Following our editorial in the previous issue on the DIY’s to bird watching, we thought it fitting to go in search of local bird watching spots… Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary Situated in Mucleneuk, Pretoria, this bird sanctuary was named after the well-known ornithologist, Austin Roberts (1883 – 1948). The sanctuary is open for visitors to walk around on their own or you could book a guided walk. Although it’s surrounded by neighbourhoods and busy streets, some interesting birds can be found here such as the Green-backed Heron and Little Bittern. For a lovely bird watching morning out that’s not too far from home, visit this little piece of paradise in the city.
Faerie Glen Nature Reserve If you are wanting more of a nature reserve experience without driving out to the Pilanesberg or Kruger National Park, then Faerie Glen Nature Reserve should do the trick. This 128ha reserve is a haven within the city with the Moreleta Spruit transecting it and the Bronberg Mountains forming the norther border. Footpaths through the reserve make for a lovely walking trail where birds that can be spotted include the Marsh Warbler, Crimson-breasted Shrike as well as the Cape and Village Weaver. There are numerous birds to be found here so be sure to take your birding list and book along. .
Pretoria National Botanical Gardens With beautiful surroundings and up to 50 species of birds to be seen in a morning’s bird watching, the Botanical Gardens
is a true oasis in the city. Because the gardens consist of various habitats, some of the special sightings here include the Fairy Flycatcher, Red-throated Wryneck and the Thickbilled Weaver. Take a walk along the trails through the gardens or simply sit on your picnic blanket and wait for the birds to come to you. Either way, you will have a relaxed bird watching experience.
Wonderboom Nature Reserve If you’re wanting to venture a little further without driving too far, then Wonderboom Nature Reserve situated to the north of Pretoria, straddling the Magaliesberg Mountains is the place to go. When exploring this reserve by foot, the bird spotting is very rewarding. As you climb the hill some species spotted could include the Bar-throated Apalis, African Grey Hornbill and White-browed Scrub-robin.
Rietvlei Nature Reserve
23
Right on our doorstep, not only is this reserve great for a day of game viewing, but there are an interesting variety of birds that can be found here too. With the dam and other water bodies within the reserve, it’s a great spot for viewing waterbirds some of which include the African Purple Swamphen, African Darter and Reed Cormorant. The opportunity to spot near to a hundred species in a day’s bird watching is very rewarding and there are a number of excellent bird hides which will make taking a break from driving around the reserve (you cannot walk freely within it) a pleasure. According to BirdLife South Africa (www.birdlife.org.za), the Northern Gauteng birding area stretches from Centurion to Hammanskraal and east to Bronkhorstspruit. This 6,368 square kilometres is representative of two Biome (savanna towards the north and grassland to the south) and offers more than 400 bird species and bird watching is good all year round.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT We were pleased with the way the Annual Golf AGM went on 4 May 2016. Thank you to those that attended. New office bearers were elected on the ladies’ section whereby the members of the Men’s Committee have remained the same. Feedback regarding the well-being of the golf section was given and reports on changes and alterations effected the past year were presented. I want to thank Tilla Janssen, the outgoing ladies captain, for her commitment, hard work and dedication to the Centurion Golf Club these past two years. At the AGM the new office bearers that were elected were Sue Smith as ladies captain, supported by new office bearers, Charmaine Engelbrecht and Marianne Fraser. We’ve also seen the conclusion of our Club’s AGM that took place on 17 May 2016 which was well supported whereby feedback was presented to all social members of the club.

The leagues are in full swing and the Centurion Golf Club Senior Scratch League as well as the Ladies’ Saturday League have joined the Handicap League team by winning their division. Congratulations to all who participated and good luck to the leagues which are still competing. You’ve made us very proud.
The monthly Captains’ Challenge that is scheduled for every last Saturday of the month has now moved to our afternoon field for the winter months with a shotgun start at 12h15. The event that was held on 28 May 2016 was, as always, very well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by all our members. Our loyal sponsor of this event remains HOKAAI MEAT MARKET. This last challenge was won by Andre Roux, Louis and Joey Du Toit and Jacques Kruyswijk. Well played. One of our members that has come through the ranks first as a junior member and now as a student, Eric Nel, recently participated at an IGT tournament and won this 3-day event on a superb score of -6. Congratulations to Eric on his first provisional tournament victory as an amateur. Those members of the Centurion Country Club who participated in the Matckovich Challenge and emerged as the winners, were presented with their prize by MERCEDEZ BENZ CENTURION and 20 participants were treated to an advanced driving course at Zwarkskop Race Track. Many thanks to MERCEDEZ BENZ for this generous prize. What became clear is that we have some very talented drivers who possess skills other than driving a golf ball.

SOCIAL EVENTS A lovely Cheese and Wine evening was held at the Club recently with Slanghoek Wines. It was well supported and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended. We learned about the different Slanghoek Wines that were up for tasting and these were paired with beautiful cheese platters as well as a number of other delicious offerings that the caterers prepared.
Be sure not to miss the monthly events that are taking place at the Clubhouse specially arranged for our residents of the Estate. There is a Whiskey Tasting evening to look forward to as well a Paint Nite as well as a Drumming evening. Be sure to watch our facebook page for more info https:// www.facebook.com/CenturionCountryClub/ or go to our website www.centuriongolfestate.co.za.
Established in 1951, Slanghoek Cellar is situated in the picturesque Slanghoek Valley, 800m above sea level, surrounded by the majestic Slanghoek Mountains from which the cellar derives its name. The valley’s geographic position, fertile, varied soils and microclimate are reflected in the unique character of Slanghoek’s renowned and prizewinning red, white, sparkling, dessert wines and port. Since the first harvest more than half a century ago, Slanghoek’s producers, viticulturists and winemakers have pledged their commitment to the cultivation of quality wine grapes and winemaking in order to yield premium wines year after year. LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT Some of you may or may not know that I have taken over from Tilla Janssen as the new Ladies Captain. Tilla held her farewell golf day on 28 April 2016 and what a lovely send-off it was. I’d like to thank Tilla on behalf of the Ladies Section of the Club for standing as Ladies Captain for the past 2 years and for all she has done - for her unselfish time and dedication. The Early Birds Thursday Ladies had their first quarterly prize giving get-together on 27 May 2016 at Shelanti Tea Garden & Venue. This prize giving is held for individual stableford points for 2 different trophies. A division was won by Elize Visser averaging 33 points. The B division was won by Wilma Kuhn averaging 30 points. Well done to both these amazing ladies. It was a wonderful turnout and the ladies really thoroughly enjoyed their high tea. The next big event on the calendar was the first Centurion Country Club Ladies Open that took place on Thursday, 2 June 2016 with 63 entrants consisting of members and visiting ladies from other clubs. The ladies braved a chilly morning but I’m sure the Old Brown Sherry helped! Congratulations to Karen Robinson on winning this event with 39 points.

Grazing our way through winter…
You either love it or hate it but one thing is for sure, winter means us ladies can hide a few extra kilos under our coats which is extremely useful when all the cold weather prompts comfort eating!
can’t really cope with them on his own, so they’ve decided to make a long weekend of it and take advantage of the Family Fun Getaway package that African Pride Irene Country Lodge still has on offer. The calves will have a complimentary interleading room and they eat breakfast for free.
Mooira rang me last night to say that she would like to escape the cold weather in the Midlands (they moved to greener pastures earlier this year and yes, it’s even colder there!), so we’ve decided on a moovelous, well-deserved cows weekend. I caught a sneak peek at Camdeboo Day Spa’s Winter Bliss special and when I mentioned it to Mooira she was moorse excited. I mooed, ‘’Mooira, it’s a SIX Timeless Skin Treatment (great for our winter coats) followed by a Taster Buff & Go, then we will put our hooves up and enjoy a cup of tea with a slice of cake for only R835 per person,” and her response was, “Moofect!”
As I mentioned earlier, this winter weather makes us hungrier than usual but as always, at Destination Irene we are spoilt for choice… on the menu for our weekend:
28
I’ve also mentioned the fact that vouchers for various packages for Camdeboo Day Spa can be bought online to Bill, in the hope that he and Stan (Mooira’s bull) would think to book some surprise spoils for their ladies – sometimes our men need a little nudge in the right direction! Mooira was worried about leaving the herd behind as the calves will be on school holidays and Stan
The African Pride Irene Country Lodge Buffet Breakfast is a scrumptious way to start any winter day. Home roasted plunger coffee or a pot of international tea served at the table on arrival will do well for a start. Bill also suggested it to Stan as a great venue for ‘potential new business’ breakfast meetings whilst he’s here. Lunch time is a breeze with the Irene Dairy Farm offering a great lunch menu so Mooira and I can ensure everyone is well fed. The calves will run around whilst the fresh winter air and warm winter sun will do them good. On Friday evening (4pm to 7pm) we will be tucking into the BBQ Lakeside Special Menu. (Also available on Saturdays from 11am to 7pm.) A unique American-Style BBQ prepared by Executive

Chef, Hanroe Erasmus, who acquired his skills from travelling and cooking in the USA, with a selection of the finest Craft beers – Bill and Stan are going to love this evening out. Saturday Night Live promotions at Meadow Green Restaurant are the perfect night out where the entire buffet is a Chefs theatre - you can see the food being freshly made, plated and served. Bill is especially impressed by the spectacular range of wines on offer by the glass from the vinoteque walk-in cellar. Saturday night… sorted.
Before Mooira and her herd head home, Sunday Lunch (Meadow Green Restaurant from 1pm to 3pm) is booked. Mooira and I aren’t too worried about the extra kilos under our coats, that’s what spring time resolutions are for! Keep warm everyone… till next month

CANON PRO GOLF SERIES The Canon Pro Golf Series is a unique Canon customer event involving some of the world’s leading players from the European PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association). The annual series consists of 12 to 15 one-day events spanning countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Professional golfers take part to form ‘Team Canon’ and play against Canon clients.
Past players have included European Tour greats such as Peter Baker, Ross Fisher, Tony Johnstone and Thomas Levet.
The events are made up of Pro-Ams (a mix of amateur and professional), training clinics, exhibition matches and ‘hints and tips’ sessions. Centurion Country Club has for the past four years running had the privilege of being the host golf course for this very prestigious event that took place on Friday, 13 May this year. We had the honour of meeting PRO’s Thomas Bjorn from Denmark as well as local PRO, Richard Sterne and one of the world’s top disabled golfers, Manuel De Los Santos from the Dominican Republic. Three of our local CCC juniors were selected to caddy for the PRO’s on this day which gave them the opportunity to get up close and personal with the players. They were Michael Sinclair, Kyle Campbell and Jaco van der Merwe.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE ANNUAL CHRIS JOUBERT MEMORIAL FISHING DAY Every year we feature wonderful pictures from our Annual Fishing and Market Day, but some residents and homeowners are unaware of how this day came to be…
Fishing Day on the Centurion Country Club calendar.
Chris Joubert was the first Club Captain of Centurion Country Club (1997 to 2001) and in an effort to bring the people of the Estate together, including those who don’t play golf, he founded the first Annual Fishing Day during this time. It was decided to hold the event on the weekend that the course was scheduled to have hollow-tining done as there would be no golf played during this time.
What started out as just a few fishing stands with prizes for the top three fishermen, has grown tremendously. The day is now booked out with 60 stands of between 12 and 15 metres marked out around the dams, exciting prizes and trophies for many of the contestants and wonderful sponsors thanks to whom this annual event is such a great success. It’s also grown into a market day where local entrepreneurs are able to showcase their products and those residents who aren’t fishing (usually the wives) can enjoy a little bit of shopping.
Sadly, Chris passed away shortly after starting this successful day and so Willie van der Lingen kindly continued with it and it was then marked as the Chris Joubert Memorial
Once again, Centurion Country Club would like to thank our loyal sponsors and we look forward to many more years of enjoying this well-supported event on our calendar.
