LIFE LANDSCAPES CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF SUCCESS
The seed planted ten years ago has germinated and grown into a huge tree of life, bearing good fruit enjoyed by both staff and clients alike. From its humble beginnings in 2005, Life Landscapes has blossomed and now employs more than 1000 employees with a growing footprint which now also includes new offices in Pretoria and Cape Town. We are not only ‘full of life’ we are also transforming lives Life Green Group has ‘’adopted’’ Morutathuto Primary School and is making a difference in the lives of the children. The school mentoring programme is an initiative by Partners for Possibility and we are proud to be part of such an amazing and uplifting initiative. This program provides a structured way to get involved with the school in order to assist, where needed, in capacity building and where possible, improving the school’s infrastructure. “Our School” is a primary school based in Meadowlands Soweto. It has 527 children from grade R to grade 7, and has 11 teachers. The Principal, Tshidi Mashile,

is a delightful lady who commands great respect amongst the learners and educators alike, but also has great compassion for the learners and her staff. We have attended several seminars in order to get to know the school and its unique needs. Projects Life Green Group has started at the school include training of their gardeners, as well as three of the parents who have volunteered to take responsibility for the “veggie patch” – a great combination of capacity building combined with infrastructure development. The veggies will be used to supplement the school lunches which each of the 527 children receive daily. Some will also be sold to raise funds to purchase new seeds, and keep the veggie patch going for many years to come. We are looking forward to more exciting projects and will continue to build, uplift and empower while enjoying this journey with the amazing staff and pupils at Morutathuto Primary School. USE OF TRAFFIC CIRCLES INSIDE THE ESTATE
Some of the comments returned as part of the recent resident satisfaction survey indicated an element of uncertainty as to who has the right of way at our internal traffic circles.
a roundabout shall yield right-of-way to traffic approaching from the right, within the roundabout, where such traffic is so close as to constitute a danger or potential danger.
The roads on our Estate are public municipal roads and all municipal by-laws and standard traffic rules apply. All the circles on the Estate are marked with the R2.2 sign classifying them as mini-circles (Refer to http://www.circles.org.za/ for more information).
Mini Circles (Regulatory Sign R2.2) Yield at Mini Circle The yield at mini circle regulatory sign R2.2 imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers of vehicles approaching a mini circle shall yield right of way to any vehicle which will cross any YIELD LINE marking at such junction before them, and which, in the normal course of events, will cross the path of such driver’s vehicles, and that the driver shall move in a clockwise direction in such junction and attempt not to encroach on the mini circle. In Plain English Essentially what this means is that the first vehicle to cross the line has the right of way. This works in much the same way as a four way stop.
Who has the right of way?
7
Example In the example Vehicle 2 has the right of way even though Vehicle 1 is to the right. This is because Vehicle 2 has crossed the line first. The larger traffic circle or roundabout are marked with the R137 sign.
Roundabout These are only found outside the Estate. The roundabout regulatory sign R137 imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers entering a roundabout shall turn to the left and shall travel round the roundabout in a clockwise direction, and it imposes a mandatory requirement that drivers entering INTERFACE | SEPTEMBER 2015
TAKE CARE
OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
8 The recent spate of unsuspecting, law abiding citizens being horribly defrauded by the use of their identity numbers, mobile phone numbers, e-mail addresses and other personal details has received substantial media coverage. Frightening tales of stolen identities are regularly told at the greens or in the spa, at high tea or at the braai. And you always considered yourself safe; that you would never be the victim of such crime, as you are so careful with your information. Yet, on a less serious, but intensely irritating level, most of us are constantly bombarded by unsolicited advertising information through our personal gadgets, whether it be on social media, our mobile phone or via e-mail. Wondering how that e-mail landed in your in-box, you merely delete same. But we all divulge all kinds of personal detail daily, mostly unsuspecting, to a large number of persons and entities. Each form we fill out at our service providers, albeit general practitioner, beautician, plumber, lawyer or supermarket contains an astonishing amount of personal details. We enter competitions and have loyalty cards. We browse and leave cookies, post and respond to e-mails. The information gathered is captured and once in this format, can be digitally transmitted to a vast number of people and entities to whom we never intended to give our personal information. Considering the vast information in the hands of your bank, insurance company and a myriad of other commercial and social entities, your privacy is no longer as private as you might have thought. Not even mentioning the information held in the less safely kept records of government and SEPTEMBER 2015 | INTERFACE
government institutions for example SARS, CIPRO and the Deed’s offices as well as at municipalities, the motor vehicle registration department and at the Department of Home Affairs or at customs. It is common knowledge that a burgeoning trade has developed focused on the gathering of personal information and selling such, as the information has become yet other commercial item, having a surprising value in the open market to use at best for marketing purposes. The free flow of information has become one of the pivotal factors of modern society. Financial institutions have to ensure compliance with legislation, inter alia FICA requirements, and additional information to consider loan applications. Medical doctors require information to make medical diagnoses and to issue an invoice. Economists need information to make projections of growth, or the lack thereof. The list is endless. The driven development of computer technology to assist in the gathering, documenting and storage of the information and the sheer volume thereof, has had an unintended downfall as the possibility to store and transmit large amounts of information with relative ease, can be used for both good and bad. The need for regulation of the safekeeping of information arose for not only the gathering of information but the simultaneous safekeeping thereof. Even the hard core proponents of the free market had to concede this point. Many countries have adopted comprehensive data protection laws including almost the whole of Europe and many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean Islands, Asia and Africa.
In the United States of America the approach seems to have been more fragmented in the sense that the problem has been addressed by different sectors of the economy separately.
the necessity of access to this information on the one hand and the right to privacy of the person as provided for in the constitution on the other.
In South Africa the legislature aims to address the issues pertaining to the obtaining, processing, storing and use of private information through the provisions of the Protection of Private Information Act, generally referred to as “POPI”, Act 4 of 2013.
POPI creates, amongst others, the obligation for both public and private persons and entities in possession of private information of individuals to limit the information gathered to the specific required information to fulfill your needs. Once gathered, the information is to be protected by having reasonable security measures in place. The information is to be ensured as relevant and up to date. Any entity should ensure that the information gathered is the bare minimum required and to hold such information only for as long as it is required. And importantly, the individual is entitled to see the actual information so gathered regarding the individual and held by the entity.
Although promulgated in 2013 only a very limited, mainly administrative, number of provisions have become operational. These provisions deal with the appointment of an information regulator and the promulgation of regulations. However, it would be prudent to take note of the legislation in preparation of the act coming into full operation. A grace year is provided for the period immediately after the act has finally become fully into operation, but considering the scope of POPI and its prescriptive requirements, any entity will have to make use of each day of that year to fully comply. The balance of the act will come into operation once the necessary regulations have been promulgated and the regulator has been appointed. The large scope of POPI caused equally wide ranging provisions. The information aimed to be regulated is an excellent example. Information to be regulated by POPI includes: • contact details: for example e-mail, telephone number, physical address. • demographic information: age, sex, race, birth date, ethnicity et cetera. • personal history: employment, financial, educational, criminal, medical history • biometric information • opinions of and about the person • private correspondence.
The Information Regulator shall ensure the compliance with POPI. It is clear that, given the volume of information on the records of even a small government department or private entity will make compliance with these obligations difficult. However, the protection of the private information of the public, called “information subjects” in the act, is of utmost importance. Compliance with POPI, as with the Promotion of Information Act (PAIA), the Finance Information Centre Act (FICA) and the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act (RICA) will be onerous, time consuming and costly. And the cost will be recovered from the consumer. However, one can only hope that the considerable effort will be worth our while to sleep safe in the secure knowledge that your personal information is indeed as safe as houses.
9
Closely linked to the above is the equally wide definition of the term “processing” which is defined as any action taken with the personal information, including collection, usage, storage, dissemination, modification or destruction, irrespective of whether such processing is automated or not. POPI recognises the fact that the flow of information, including information of a private nature, is of paramount importance to the proper functioning of modern society and that public and private bodies alike must have access to such information. The act attempts to strike a balance between

LADIES CAPTAIN REPORT
As winter draws to a close we enter the spring period in great anticipation of sunny weather and greener pastures. One can already see the trees bursting with greenery that wants to come out and flowers popping up everywhere. What a wonderful time of year. Since my last report our Mixed League team was on their way to play their last two rounds of golf for this league season. It is with pride and joy that I congratulate our team and give a BIG THANKS to Sue Smith and the rest of the mixed league team for never giving up and being crowned the winners for 2015 Mixed League. Well done! Just to give some feedback of a few past events, our Thursday ladies enjoyed a Cheese and Wine pamper day with Artistry Facial Products in July - a big thanks goes to Marinda Bandad and Pauline Diamond from Route 21 for presenting their products. A lot of preparation went into our annual National Women’s Charity Golf Day and the potjiekos competition, with all funds raised being donated to the children that are in the care of Dynamic Women for Children, and before we knew it, the 10th of August had arrived! I took it as a personal challenge to try and increase the amount this year to what was raised last year for this very worthy charity. With the help from our fellow golfers, the HOA, Amarille and Kuxuxa Foods staff as well as all the potjies generously sponsored by our residents and visitors, we managed to donate close to R40 000 to DWFC.
This coincides with National Braai day so come and enjoy the braai meal available for this day. Apart from the golfing events, and in the spirit of September being our national braai month, don’t forget the Bushveld Braai taking place on Saturday, 19 September 2015 on our patio open for all our residents. Awesome entertainment has been arranged for the kids with a Silent Disco and if you’ve seen it taking place before, you will understand how popular it is and how much fun the kids have. We are also super excited to be the host club for a very special event this year - the Women’s Golf SA Inter-Provincial tournament taking place from 28 September to 2 October 2015 with 14 provinces participating. We wish our GNGU ladies all the best. Until next month - happy golfing… Tilla Janssen
15
A few generous sponsors need to be singled out. A heartwarming thanks goes to Hans Greyling for sponsoring the golf balls; our Club Captain, Jacques Wickens for sponsoring his captain’s challenge day’s income; to Nadine Olivier and Carol-Ann Groenewald for sponsoring the Miglio necklace raffle prize; Elna Fourie for the photoshoot prize; Marleen vd Walt from DWFC for prizes for the golf day; to Sue Miles, Jannes and his pro shop team who sold the golf ball raffles; and to each and every one who donated money into the “Green piggy” that was passed around on the patio during the month of July. Special thanks must also go to Annie Pypier and her team from Dr Jan Smith’s dentistry in Wonderboom, who selflessly donated their time, once again, to do dental checks on all the kids’ teeth. The trailer that was parked on the patio filled up nicely and all that donated food will feed the kids at the DWFC plots for at least 3 months. I cannot forget a very special lady with the biggest of hearts who also selflessly donated and sponsored towards this day – Joey du Toit. Thank you for all you do. With Women’s month now firmly behind us, there is so much happening in September and we are preparing to celebrate spring to its fullest with our next CCC Ladies Open taking place on 17 September 2015 in the morning field. Don’t forget to book. We are also celebrating Heritage day on the public holiday, 24 September 2015 with our Founder members and debenture holders battling it out for the Founder’s Day trophy.

MERCEDES BENZ CENTURION BETTER BALL CHALLENGE
On Saturday, 8 August 2015 we hosted the monthly Mercedes Benz Centurion Better Ball Challenge. By now we have quite a few teams in the running for the advanced driving course presented by Merc. Added to this list are father and son team, Jimmy and Christo Green who took home Saturdays title. They are the lucky ones to win a Mercedes for a weekend. During this competition we had the fabulous duo from Taylor Made who came out to give us a ball promotion. This is
always a great opportunity to try something new and often to learn about the new technology hitting the market. Clearly it worked for Jimmy and Christo… maybe you should give a new ball a try? 16 Hello again Centurion Country Club! It is an absolute pleasure and an even bigger privilege, to be back at Centurion Country Club in my new position. To the Members and Staff at Centurion Country Club, I thank you all for a very warm welcome. Your support and input are truly appreciated, and I certainly look forward reaching new benchmarks at Centurion. My career at Centurion Country Club started in 2009 working in the Pro Shop on a part time basis, where after I was permanently employed by Jannes Sik, in the beginning of 2010. During my employment in the shop I built strong relationships with the members and staff where I established a big love for the club that allowed it to feel like home. In October 2014, I had the privilege to move to the North Coast where I took up a position as the Shop Manager for Global Golf and PGA Professional at Mount Edgecombe Country Club. It was an honour to work with one of the best Managers in the industry and a familiar name amongst the members from Centurion, Desirée Stone. Before I could say “SHARKS”, I was offered this opportunity at Centurion Country Club and it is great to be back! Together, we can look forward to the new changes and experiences SEPTEMBER 2015 | INTERFACE
that lie ahead of us, which can only be complimented by your feedback and suggestions! I would like to hear from you, hans@centurioncountryclub.co.za, 012 665 0279 My final words come from my favourite quote by Tony Robbins: “If you do what you’ve always done, you will get what you’ve always got.” Hans Jonck
