LIVING IN

Peace

I

nto the second half of this year and one can feel the pace picking up! Our calendars usually only start filling up around October as the year-end events start but this year, my calendar is already overflowing in August. Have a look at all the functions and events featured this month – there is bound to be something of interest to you and your family. As we welcome new families to our valued village, we have also had to say ‘Goodbye’ from time to time. It’s always sad to see families leave for various reasons, whether it be moving to a different city or retiring to an old age home, and every now and then we have to say ‘Farewell’ to someone who passes on. This month we send our condolences out to the Zaayman family as Mr Zaayman who lived in Irene for many years, passed away peacefully at age 97 on 1 July 2015. Although our security team is doing an excellent job at keeping our village crime free, unfortunately they have had to deal with other forms of crime of late. The shooting of birds and vandalism are becoming a problem in our peaceful village and so we urge any resident who has any information to contact Jan Swanepoel (083 607 6600) so that he can find the source of the problem. I for one, would like to see our village residents respectful of property and our bird life. After all, most of us chose Irene Irene Town Crier | July Issue 2015

as a place to live and raise our children because of the village atmosphere and wildlife. We live in Tshwane’s most beautiful suburb, let’s not ruin it! If you are feeling active as Spring nears, sign up for the Spar Ladies Race on 29 August 2015. And you don’t have to be a lady to enter! A wig and skirt will do to pass as a lady! Our very own Irene Homes pack the goodie bags each year for this event and this year the entries are limited to 25 000. The goodie bags are always filled with wonderful samples and offers, and you get a t-shirt to wear for the event too, not to mention the lucky draws at the end. It’s an afternoon filled with fun so be sure not to miss out.

With that, I wish you a warm last few weeks of winter and look forward to seeing our villagers out and about as the temperatures rise. ‘Till next month

Tracey

YOU SAID IT

D

ear Editor

Following on a very enjoyable afternoon in January and numerous requests, we are going to have another meeting of the (old car) cranks in Irene. As there is no cricket on the Oval on the selected day, we will meet there on Sunday, 30 August 2015 at 15h00. Anybody with an interest in old cars is welcome, owning an old car is not a prerequisite. The January event was made all the more enjoyable through the involvement of interested non-owners. So, clean her, get her started and put some refreshments in the boot. Hopefully the rain doesn’t intervene and we can continue with the unfinished conversations of 6 months ago. Regards

Gustav Raubenheimer The opinions expressed in this readers’ column are not necessarily shared by the publisher of the Irene Town Crier. Readers’ views can be emailed to info@tlgpublishing.co.za.

Recently I lost my two most precious pets, my corgi’s, whom I very diligently keep within the confines of my property. I could not fathom how my dogs had escaped but once a neighbour confirmed that they had been spotted trotting nearby the Oval I launched into a full-scale search. I called everyone I could think of and drove around the village as night fell searching for my babies. I knocked on doors and walked around the streets showing everyone who was still out their picture (including all of our on duty guards and the EBS Security vehicle driver) all to no avail. Disheartened I called Alyson, who was incredibly sweet and understanding and who immediately sent out an email to all of the ILA residents just in case they had been rescued and held safely ‘til morning. A family in torment we drove around calling for them for hours… only to discover that my 5 year old had employed them to “guard” a Princess in the wendy house and had locked them in hours before! Our relief was tangible! I’d like to thank Alyson and the ILA for being the link between the residents of our village. The solace it gave me knowing that someone out there might have my pets was hugely consoling and even though this was a false alarm, it reminded me just how lucky we are. The OurHood app might’ve been a great resource so I’d like to encourage our villagers to load the app and register so that we can start communicating with our fellow villagers about this kind of issue, not to mention how valuable it would be if we had a serious security alert. Yours sincerely

TEA AND CAKE MORNING AT THE IRENE LIBRARY

F

riends of the Irene Library and the library staff hosted a tea and cake morning on Wednesday, 8 May 2015 at the Irene Library. This was mainly organised to welcome Helen Steytler Erasmus, a Southdowns retired professional teacher and author of children story books better known by her teaching name ‘Teacher Helen’. Teacher Helen’s visit to the library was primarily to establish contact with the library staff and to strengthen the existing relationship with the library committee (Friends of Irene Library) as well as donating six of her newly published story books to the library. On that day, Helen officially handed over her six books to Mildred and Justice (The Irene Library staff). While handing over the books, she said she is giving the books to the library just to show the love she has for the people of Irene. And with the love that she has for books, particularly children’s story books; she made arrangements with the library to assist with reading stories to children whenever the need arises. One of the mothers, whose children schooled at Southdowns and was present at the tea table, Wakaba Vuyelwa, said that her children would always come home happy and telling her about good stories that Teacher Helen read to them at school. The titles of the books that were donated are The Snail’s Secret, Ogley Won’t Eat, The Little Blue Crocodile and Die Blou Krokodilletjie (an Afrikaans version of The Little Blue Crocodile). These books are said to be mostly suitable for

children between the ages of 4 and 7 years old. A web page is available for those who are interested and would like to purchase Teacher Helen’s story books: www.teacherhelen.co.za.

CHRISTIAAN

Mauritz Zaayman 1 June 1918 – 1 July 2015

O

om Zaay, as he was known to many people of Irene, moved into our village in 1967. He would often be seen walking his little dog every afternoon through the streets of Irene. He died peacefully on 1 July 2015. A brave man in his infirmity, proud and dignified, Oom Zaay used to do his Canadian Air Force exercises every morning before opening up his son’s business in Botha Laan, Zaayman Cars. He will be sorely missed in the village and especially by our Village Manager, Jan, as he often called or visited him. We extend condolences to the Zaayman family on their loss.

12 D

DEAR IRENE RESIDENTS & ILA MEMBERS

ear Irene Resident / ILA Member.

After driving around in some of the smaller towns from my past, I am reminded that we have to fiercely protect our beautiful village from the encroaching degradation seen all over our beautiful country. So many people complain about the state of our country but hesitate to stand and make a difference. In this issue, you will note that our security is being very effectively attended to by a dedicated and diligent company, which is overseen by a volunteer body of engaged and passionate residents. You will also see that it’s our very own residents who are in need of some introspection in the obedience of bi-laws that are flouted just about everywhere! This behaviour can only lead to further disobedience of the law which is not to the benefit of all.

the amazing birdlife that we enjoy in the village. Graffiti The defacing of public property in our village is another destructive act that cannot be tolerated! The graffiti, which was successfully removed in the village some time ago, is once again occurring on the eastern side of the village (see photo). If your children are guilty of the offence or if the graffiti is outside your home, please purchase some Heritage Green enamel and paint over the electrical box graffiti to return it to its original state. Please report those responsible for the damage to public property should you witness it taking place or know who is responsible.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done”. – Nelson Mandela Security report We are very pleased to report that security is well in hand in the village and we therefore invite all new residents to join their neighbours in maintaining the services delivered to the village, by joining the ILA (see Membership below for details). Purposeful destruction of our birdlife The bird shooting in our village is a very sad occurrence that we all need to stand against. A friend who lives abroad told me that she specifically misses the sound of birdsong that is so native to our local environment. Why anyone would wilfully shoot any wild bird, especially a loerie, I cannot fathom, but there are residents who are shooting our birds! This is a criminal offence, even when using a cattie or a BB gun. Please, residents, report to the ILA anyone carrying out this scourge. The SPCA will pursue criminal charges if we report it to them. Charges will be laid in terms of the Animals Protection Act - we need to protect Irene Town Crier | July Issue 2015

Burning of garden refuse Centurion is a smoke free zone. Burning of garden refuse is on-going at this time of year and is not only illegal but is a hazard to neighbours and other residents. Please consider using your garden waste to produce compost for your garden or mulch your beds with leaves as we move toward spring. If this isn’t a viable option then consider taking it to a legal green dump site or employ a service like Open-Sky, which collects green waste every Friday in our village and they will make compost from it. Lost animals The lost animal issue continues to be something that the ILA has to deal with, as many of the animals on the street are unidentifiable. A micro-chip is not effective unless you have the necessary equipment

13

to read it so please ensure that your pets are safely secured in your property and that they wear identiďŹ cation so that they are easily returned to you when lost and found. Please note that a dog was recently run down and killed in Irene so your pets are not safe running around the village. Power and water issues Please be advised that your property water and/or power issues are not within the mandate of the ILA. Even though we volunteer to keep you informed to the best of our ability regarding load shedding, we cannot be responsible for your power and water issues. Please report any power failure or water supply problems to the Council and get a reference number for your complaint. Should your complaint not be resolved within 24 hours, please escalate your issue to our local DA Councillor, Christa Spoelstra and cc the ILA who will try to assist. Damaged water meters After a number of reports of water leaks at water meters, residents should inspect their meters regularly for damages and notify Council timeously. If the leak is on your side of the meter, you could be liable for a massive water bill! This said, before reporting a water cut or low water pressure, please check that your water meter handle is switched on, as children have been known to play pranks and switch them off! Illegal dumping The illegal dumping of all sorts of waste continues unabated everywhere. Residents who employ building contractors or wallbuilders in Irene are requested to ensure that their contractor takes all building rubble to the Olifantsfontein municipal dump and also that they provide you with a receipt as proof that they have fulďŹ lled their duty to legally dump your building rubble. In this way we can ensure that we all play our part in the prevention of illegal dumping in our area by Irene employed contractors. Membership Our services are only delivered due to our

memberships’ support. Should you not currently be a member and would like to contribute toward the on-going security of our village, please contact Jan or Alyson at the numbers below. Your support will be welcomed and greatly appreciated. Contact numbers Irene Village Manage - Jan Swanepoeljan: swanepoel@irene.co.za, 083 607 6600 ILA Manager - Alyson Lea-Cox: ilamanager@irene.co.za, 072 714 3740 EBS Security - Control Room: (012) 667 6337 Moving or renting We would request that members who are moving out of the village provide as much notice as possible of their move, if possible with the contact details of the estate agent or new buyer. The ILA will then be able to manage membership more effectively and continue to provide security in the village. New owners/ tenants are not being informed of the security provided by the ILA and the processes followed in the village. This leads to security risks and invalid membership data. Please ensure that your estate agent informs the new buyer of the security arrangements and associated costs and if possible, provides both the ILA and the new buyer with contact details. This will ensure a smooth transition that leaves everyone secure and unexposed on taking occupation. Thank you, once again, to our loyal membership for your support. We regret having to belabour local bi-law issues but ask that we all work together to maintain this beautiful village that we all call home. Until next month, keep safe. Your ILA July Issue 2015 | Irene Town Crier

14 ANNUAL IRENE Winter Solstice Polar

T

BEAR SWIM 2015

he annual Irene Winter Solstice Polar Bear Swim was held at 21h00 on Saturday 20 June 2015 at Martin and Zani Teubes’ home. This was the closest Saturday to the Winter Solstice, the official start of winter! The Theme remained “Fear is temporary, regret lasts forever”. The air temperature was a bit cooler than last year at 6⁰C and the water was a chilly 8⁰C! The party started early with the Super 15 play-off match between The Stormers and The Brumbies on the big screen, won (unfortunately) by The Brumbies. Martin and Zani were the perfect hostess and host, allowing the swimmers and friends to make use of their home. Ghluwein was courtesy of Wendy while “Springbokkies” were very popular. This was all an attempt to ensure the swimmers had enough Dutch Courage to take the plunge. Most of those at the gathering had no fear but a few had valid doctor’s notes indicating ‘flu or similar’! One new family took great convincing being unaccustomed to the Irene temperatures. Philip was so filled with the joys of winter that he dived in a few times. He also fell in before the party even started! Various prizes were awarded including Oldest Swimmers, Best Dressed, Best Swimmer and Longest in the Pool. Thanks to Centurion Swimming and Aqua

19 Irene’s own Master Chef in the making Lily Tate le Roux of Stopford Drive participated in the Young Chef’s contest held at Hirsches, Centurion on 19 June 2015. Ten contestants under the age of 12 years old were selected to compete and each were given a mystery basket loaded with a variety of products and produce. They were given brief instructions on how to operate the utensils and equipment, and left to their own devises for an hour to prepare a meal using as much of the ingredients as possible. Lily Tate prepared a delicious cream of mushroom soup and complimented it with a grilled chicken salad. It was quite incredible to see and experience the creativeness of these young boys and girls. All contestants were evaluated throughout the process and in the end were graded on their presentation, taste and also the general tidiness of their workstations. Lily Tate didn’t make it to the top three but thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was complimented on her unique soup dish. If nothing else, she has shown a lot more enthusiasm in the kitchen since and we may very well have a little chef in the making at Stopford Drive. The photos show Lily Tate with the celebrity judge, at her workstation and presenting her dishes to the judges. Well done, Lily Tate, Irene is proud of you. July Issue 2015 | Irene Town Crier

24 THE ROSE-RINGED Parakeet Project 2015

The Rose-ringed Parakeet Psittacula krameri is an invasive parrot species, which inhabits urban areas of South Africa. It is currently listed as a Category 2 invasive species in the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act. However, the impacts of the species on local biodiversity and the environment are not known. Researchers from the University of the Witwatersrand are launching the Rose-ringed Parakeet Project to firstly, locate parakeet roosting/breeding sites and secondly, investigate the size and distribution range of the Rose-ringed parakeet population in Gauteng. This will be complemented by parallel studies (in association with European researchers and ParrotNet) focused on the behaviour of these birds in Gauteng. This will improve our understanding of the ecology and behaviour of the species in South African urban environments and ensure that informed decisions are made by policy makers regarding the status and management of this parrot. Have you seen a Rose-ringed Parakeet? All birders, citizen scientists, outdoor enthusiasts and members of the public are invited to assist with and collaborate on the project by submitting sightings of these parakeets to the project database. We particularly need information on the exact location of permanent roosting and breeding sites as well as the number of parakeets seen. Irene Town Crier | July Issue 2015

Data submission guidelines Data can be submitted to the project in the following ways: 1. Using Google Forms. Please use this link to the data form, fill it in and submit.
