LIVING IN
Peace
W
ow, our village is looking beautiful. Spring flowers are blooming all around and our gardens are starting to burst with pride. Although the weather hasn’t completely warmed up yet, it’s a wonderful time of year. Our spring gardening article in this issue should hopefully help with some ideas to enriching your garden. And Lize from Leapfrog is once again, inviting residents to send her pictures of your gorgeous gardens to enter into her Spring Garden Competition. Some upcoming events not to be missed include the Irene Homes Picnic in the Park which promises to offer you and the family a fun and entertaining evening. Irene Gem Village will be holding their fete on 24 October 2015 and their line-up of entertainment and stalls will make the outing one worth taking. Of course, the Irene Primary School Moonlight Fun Run is a highlight on lots of resident’s calendars. Whether you are walking, running or pushing a pram, this event is a wonderful way to experience the spirit of Irene as residents decorate their driveways with candles, and some even offer ‘energy’ sweets along the way. There will be a food and drinks stall at The Oval for those who would like to refuel after the
Irene Town Crier | September Issue 2015
race and every participant will receive a medal. We welcome lots of outside runners to our village for this well-known fun run and we trust that Irene will (as always) welcome them. Please note that our EBS Irene Manager, Dawie, has had to change his cell phone number. His new number is on our Important Numbers page but if you have his number saved on your phone, please be sure to update it: 074 939 8134. A letter received and featured in our You said it column this issue, is typical of the neighbourliness our lovely village is known for. Friends made over the years, whether it be household friends or merely friendly chats in the street, creep into our hearts and make or life in Irene all the more richer. As we bid farewell to well-known families, we welcome the new ones who will build new stories to tell in the years to come. A village filled with stories of heritage, good and bad tales, and the promise of wonderful times to come – it’s hard not to count our blessings… ‘Till next month

YOU SAID IT
I
n praise of my ex-neighbours, the Radmores.
We have lived next door to the Radmores for 30 years and now they have left. “What a falling off was there.” Jenny retired from her position at Cornwall Hill Preparatory School where, after all these years, she had become an institution and Keith has decided to run his business from Greyton. And so, after having had their property, 12 Clifford Road, on the market for a couple of months, they accepted the offer and moved out within two weeks. We will miss them terribly. Not that we lived in each others’ pockets – that is NOT the Irene way. But, over 30 years, we had gotten used to having them as wonderful, model neighbours, always friendly and helpful, who would phone us at 10 at night to remind us that we had left a car parked outside. We could leave them with the keys to our house over the December holidays just in case lightening tripped the electricity and Keith was able to then enter the house to re-set the trip on the switchboard. That is what being neighbourly is all about, isn’t it. It all began long, long ago, in 1978 when Jenny’s mother, the venerable Mrs Lamb, bought a full ‘boereakker’ stretching from no. 12 Pioneer Road up to Jansen Lane, from the Greensmiths who had lived in it since 1958. The house was so big that they split it into two halves with Mrs Lamb getting the front section – South side, freezing in the Winter – and Jenny and Keith the North side – nice and warm… It was the Great Drought of the early eighties, when P.W.Botha, Prime Minister and later State President, led the country in a day of prayer begging the Almighty to send us rain, Irene Town Crier | September Issue 2015
that the Verwoerdburg Town Council limited Irene to one hour’s watering of the garden on certain days of the week. Mrs Lamb’s garden, her pride and joy, wilted under the onslaught of the cruel drought, quite the worst since the Rinderpest. And so they decided to subdivide the property and halve their watering responsibilities. Thus it came to pass that the Schofields ended up buying the old house at 12 Pioneer Road, built in 1906, and the Radmores kept the northern half-acre with the stables, carriage garage, maid’s quarters, etc fronting onto Jansen Lane and built themselves a very fine double storey residence overlooking a well-treed lawn. Being a modern home, Mrs Lamb got her half of the house facing north and thus was able to capture a ray of sunlight in the fierce winter and, Jenny and Keith Radmore were able to get their half of the house also facing north. The garden was half what it had been before. And so everyone was happy. The completion of their home coincided with the Almighty finally hearing our collective prayers and sending a deluge to break the draught. Keith and Jenny (and Mrs Lamb) moved into 12 Clifford Road and became neighbours to the Schofields at 12 Pioneer Road. We, as they, watched our respective children grow up, go to school, form lift clubs, pass matric, enter university and marriage and, in one case, watched a daughter die, for Death is ever part of life. And so the Cycle of Life passed over its meridian. The children left home, no more hustle and bustle, chatter and door-slamming. Now they have left and a new young family, with young children have entered into the Radmores’ house. The cycle will begin again and so on and on forever. Goodbye Keith and Jenny. We will miss you and treasure the memories of our all-too-
brief encounters over the years. A new cycle begins in Greyton and I am sure that it is all exciting and different. We will continue to call your house “the Radmores’ House” through sheer force of habit, as some old Irene residents still refer to our house as the Greensmiths’ House although the Greensmiths sold to the Radmores in 1978. Such is the weight of history and tradition in this small ‘Brigadoon’ called Irene. Back to watering the garden before they limit us again to one hour a week!

SPRING
Gardening
Preparing your garden for spring planting
9.
his time of year makes every gardener itch to get stuck into his or her garden. Here are a few tips for preparing your soil for a great return on investment when planting veggies or simply preparing beds to plant colourful seedlings.
Each one of those points is a win for the home gardener.
T
Mulching your soil It is critical that you learn to mulch and mulch with a passion! Mulching does so much to your soil that just cannot be done in any other way. If you are looking to increase the humus content of your soil, then mulching is the only way to do it. Humus is the real fertility in a soil, it cannot be created and you cannot buy it. Humus is manufactured by the millions of little goggas that live in your soil. So how does this work? Mulch is typically an organic matter that is added onto the soil surface. It does a number of things: 1. Protects the soil, 2. Decreases evaporation, 3. Keeps the soil at an even temperature, 4. Decreases the need to water your plants, 5. Increases the soil gogga population dramatically, 6. Reduces weed competition, 7. Increases the earthworm population, 8. Increases the myccorhizae population and Irene Town Crier | September Issue 2015
Reduces the soil pest load.
When you mulch, the very first thing that happens is that you create an environment that is condusive to soil macro and micro organisms. These organisms will feed on the under layer of this mulch. They will break it down into components that other organisms can use, as well as into nutrients for your plants. The by-product of this process is mulch, and mulch is the sponge that holds water, traps nutrients and feeds your plants. If you don’t have mulch, you just have sand. What can be used as a mulch? Vermicompost, normal compost, leaves, grass clippings, manure, untreated sawdust, bark chips, almost anything organic can be used as a mulch, the trick is not to dig it into your soil. Just leave it up to the goggas to do the work. Kraal manure Oh for the essence of your own herd! Unfortunately, not everyone has access to their own herd of manure producers. However if you can get some, grab it. Fresh kraal manure is probably one of the best direct mulches that you can add to your soil. It is typically full of urine that gets leached out into your soil. Urea->Ammonia>Nitrates->Nitrogen! Free Nitrogen! I love manure!
Just don’t dig it into your soil. Manure is also a great root stimulator and if you dig it into your soil your carrots and other root crops will look like space aliens, and never develop that beautiful shapely root you desire, they will just be a bunch of crazy looking roots!

When to water your plants Watering your veggie garden is something that should be a tonic to your soul. I know most people like to come home after a long day at the office and spend some time bare-foot walking around their veggie garden, with a hose or a watering can. This is probably the worst time to water your veggies! Most veggie plants do not like going to sleep with wet leaves. It encourages snails, slugs and diseases to form. The overnight wet and humid conditions is the perfect breeding ground for these pests and diseases. It’s best to water them in the early morning all the way through to early afternoon. On a really hot day or if you are expecting a few real scorchers, get up an hour earlier and water your plants deeply, this will set them up for the day and enable them to weather the extreme heat of our summer afternoons. It is best to water your veggies deeply 3 or maybe even 4 times a week. They do not need a light (or deep) everyday watering and watering them everyday does not allow them to build up natural resistance to stress, this makes the plants stronger and more capable of fighting off pests and diseases. O
DEAR IRENE RESIDENTS & ILA MEMBERS
ur village is glorious at this time of year! The life that we see everywhere abounds and this seems to give everyone a little bit of a spring in their step and a smile on their lips. We are more blessed than we know to live in this haven of greenery and beauty, enjoy every second of it! Security Although crime remains low in the village we would like to make our residents aware of a new approach being taken to gain access to properties. Criminals are gaining access to the electricity supply box and are switching off the power supply to a property, which results in the alarm battery running at and thereby allowing the criminals easy access. We are aware that many of our members do not regularly test their alarm and would encourage regular testing to ensure that the radio signal is operational and that the battery is in good working order. For assistance in this regard, please feel free to contact Jan Swanepoel at the number provided. Surveys In order to protect our residents from scams and such we usually have the relevant authority representatives who intend to conduct a survey, report to Jan at the Oval. Of late these groups are not following the normal procedure and as a result several of our residents are feeling intimidated by the unexpected visits.
Irene Town Crier | September Issue 2015
Should a survey be conducted that you have not been advised is taking place, please contact Jan and if necessary, EBS will be dispatched to investigate. Building sites To protect all of our residents we call on our homeowners, who are having any building work done on their premises, to notify the ILA. The ILA keeps the contractor and his staffs details on record. Should a contractor employee be required to remain on-site, contractors should be informed that a maximum of two individuals are allowed to do so. Shooting of wildlife Sadly the shooting of our bird life is, once again, a topic that we need to raise. It has been reported that children are shooting birds with a pellet gun. We remind our residents that the shooting of any bird and the discharge of any weapon in a built up area is an offence that the ILA takes very seriously and individuals will be prosecuted should they be identiďŹ ed. Please inform your children of the consequences of using our wildlife for target practise. Access to the Oval The Oval is the centre of our village where the community can be seen engaging in all sorts of physical and social activity.
more we can do! Membership in the village stands at 78%, which is good, but we venture to say, not good enough. That said, the Oval is a cricket field that is maintained by Villagers Cricket Club who is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the cricket pitch for match purposes. We request that our residents please advise their children that the pitch is not intended to be used for hockey or as a golf driving range as this damage to the pitch is hugely problematic to the cricketers. In addition, the Oval is experiencing a number of large sport groups that take occupation of the area in the evenings or over weekends without any permission from Villagers Cricket Club to use the facility. The ILA would ask that our residents assist in the identification of the organisers of these large groups in order that Villagers Cricket Club can remedy the situation. Any information can be passed on to Jan Swanepoel at the number provided. Membership New residents to Irene are encouraged to support the security initiative that makes Irene an attractive place to live and raise families. We have found that our membership becomes eroded when existing ILA members sell their homes to new residents who either do not sign up to support the village security or who indicate a willingness but then take months to actually come on board. Please remember that the ILA needs the support of ALL non-members to maintain our current security infrastructure. Without the community support, our village will become more prone to crime. Keep your family and Irene secure – join the ILA and make a difference. The more members we have, the
13
For membership information call: ILA - Jan Swanepoel 083 607 6600 ILA - Alyson Lea-Cox 072 714 3740 Our Hood application Much progress has been made with the implementation of the Our Hood application for the village. Several ILA members have joined and we would like to encourage you, should you not have already done so, to download the application and register as a user. Once again, please contact Jan at the number provided should you wish to be registered. Speeding Many vehicles in the village carrying school going children are speeding! We appeal to our residents to please adhere to the speed limit to keep our roads safe for OUR children. Dumping around our village To assist in action being taken against the perpetrators who are dumping around our village, we are asking that anyone witnessing any dumping taking place to report it to the ILA – with photographs if possible. The ILA will report it to the relevant authorities. Once again, contact with Jan would be the way to go. We thank our membership for their loyal support and wish everyone in our budding village a safe change of season. Your ILA September Issue 2015 | Irene Town Crier
