Fellow classmates say that he was an inspiring leader because of the way he identified with all cadets. While attending the university he worked part-time at a gym to make ends meet and also to help keep in shape. One day while jogging, Ramiro Galindo, the owner of the gym introduced him to the Republican candidate for governor. Little did he know that 10 years later their paths would cross again. To get to the position he held in March of 2004, “Mando” had to complete 2 years of flight school and have over 1500 hours of exceptional flying time in Marine helicopters. On June 30th of 2003, he was awarded the Navy and Marines Achievement Medal for his role as a frontline operations officer and flight operations officer for Operations Infinite Moonlight and Eager Mace. In August of 2003, Captain Avila joined the Presidential Helicopter Unit, the famed HMX-1. He began a heavy training schedule that lasted from August 2003 until March 8, 2004 when he had his first “Lift” on “Marine One”. That morning he had met his parents at the airport. His mother, now a retired Spanish History teacher, has severe problems walking due to chronic knee ailments. He asked her if she wanted a wheelchair but she refused because she did not want to inconvenience her son or make him late. For reasons she cannot explain, she had no pain that day in her knee and was able to walk normally. Across from the White House is an area called the Ellipse, near the Washington Monument he situated his parents to watch the events for his first “Lift”. When he approached the White House south lawn for landing he flew over his parents and gave his mother the “Gig Em Aggies” thumbs up sign. The events of that First Lift were fortuitously captured by coin-

cidence. Noted military photographer Karen Nutini happened to be at the White House and caught the event on film and later gave it to Captain Avila. (Thanks to Copy Zone in McAllen for providing an oversize scanner used to produce this story) During his four-year assignment to HMX-1 (the maximum time a gifted pilot may stay with the unit), then Captain, now Marine Major Avila visited 6 countries, 23 states, and 37 cities. Part of his duties included being assigned as the “WHLO” or White House Liaison Officer. Working with the Secret Service, Air Force One team, and other authorities this involved the detailed planning of logistics and security for all presidential trips. As an advance team leader Major Avila arranged and planned the first ever Presidential Helicopter landing in New York’s Central Park. Despite being a part of the “Marine One” Team, Major Avila humbly refers to himself as just another “Marine”. Although he has flown for two Presidents at once, kings, and princes, he says the greatest thrill he gets is when a group of young Marines gets into his helicopter and looks at him with confidence. Since completing his tour with HMX-1, the Major has been attending Command and Staff School to get ready for further promotion. He was the only Marine representative chosen for the prestigious Western Hemisphere Cooperative for Security School, which is a high level think tank for all Western Hemisphere allies of the United States. It’s possible he will be appointed to Lt. Colonel in 2009 which will put him into a strategic and operational administrative position but will regretably reduce his flying time. I spoke to him while he was on a road trip taking a little time off and getting his car from the east coast to the west coast. Soon he will be joining the HMM-161 Greyhawks training in Yuma Arizona. While there, he will be updated on the latest intelligence on enemy tactics contempomag.com page 9

Major Avila at the controls, while distinguished frequent flyers re-visit the White House. before deploying to Iraq. When asked how it felt to overfly a combat zone he told me that anytime anyone is in a helicopter, combat zone or not, there is a possibility of danger. Although he has never crashed, from time to time he has had to make emergency landings due to equipment problems or other conditions. He believes that one of the greatest weapons the Marines have is that they are serious students of war and tactics, that they use not just their muscles but also their wits in battle. Training, knowledge of their equipment, trust in their buddies, and a keen understanding of the enemy gives them the edge. I asked him what would he like for us to say in the article. He remarked that going to Texas A&M was the most invaluable experience in his life. The Aggie experience taught him how to “make opportunities for oneself”. Everywhere he goes in the military he meets fellow Aggies who are playing a vital role. An old tradition of wearing the Aggie ring on the left hand even over the wedding ring (by the way ladies Major Avila is still single) has been renewed by Aggie military members. This tradition goes back to before World War II and reoccurred in the Korean War when Aggies played a role in the U.S. military forces caught in the Chinese onslaught at Chosen Reservoir, and continues today. It’s significance, no page 10 contempo magazine

doubt, a reminder of the Marines unbreakable commitment to each other in moments of life or death. His favorite food is the caldo de pollo made by his mom. The most important days of the year are Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and of course the Aggies vs. Texas football game. Major Avila likes A&M’s chances this year. Both Tejano and Country Western music sounds are in his music collection. (I wonder if Vincente Fernandez realizes he has been played on the Presidential Helicopter). He does hope to marry some day and is on the look out for a woman with a good personality, confidence, and a streak of independence. He has promised his parents he will be back from the war. It is understandably hard for his mother to talk about what could happen to him but at the same time she says she is happy he is doing what he wants to do and knows he is well prepared. In fact, the most fearfull moment for her was when he first soloed over water because to her he seemed so young and inexperienced at that time. Well things have changed alot for Major “Mando” Avila since that first solo flight and since the 9/11 attacks. One look at Major Avila and you know our armed forces are ready, willing and able in their calling to defend our country. He along with many, many other Upper Valley young men and women are preparing for new tours of duty in the Middle East. We ask all our readers to wish these fine young and brave members of the United States Armed Forces, Gods speed and a safe return home. We want to thank the Major and all his family and friends in the Donna area who provided information and photos for this article. Major, we expect to see you home as soon as possible for a well deserved rest. By Tony Magaña (learn more about Major Avila & other Upper Valley members of the Armed Forces at www.contempomag. com)

What wines go well with your Smoked Wrapped Marinated Gulf Shrimp?

I recommend Italian Santa Margarita, Pinot Grigio 2006 because it is light, crisp and refreshing. It has an exceptional consistency and it goes well with a wide range of seafood and lighter, savory dishes. The complex flavors of this dish are well balanced when served with this wine. And, it’s my wife’s favorite with seafood.

What inspires you to create new dishes?

Well, the discovery of new delightful tastes inspire me in the same way a traveler is inspired by seeing new sites for the first time or like the satisfaction one gets from completing a puzzle. Building a new menu item means combining various complimentary ingredients in the right measures and finding the optimum preparation conditions. Sure, I want to serve guests what they want, but I also want to offer something delightfully different. Everyone is looking for new ways to stimulate their pallet and that’s why we are trying out new exciting dishes here at the Club.

I hear that you will be offering some new exotic game dishes here?

Yes, we will be arranging some new plates for special events for those who are interested in trying some unique wild game recipes. Reservations should be made by those interested so we have time to prepare. Just give me a call & I am sure we can accommodate your special requests.

The Influence of Mexican-Americans On Mexican Politics

When I was a graduate student in Boston in the late 1970’s, I was amazed at how being Irish was so entrenched into the local community identity. One of the most important events of the year was of course the St. Patrick’s Day Parade when every local politician became an Irishman for day. There was open discussion on the street about how evil the British government was and rumors about locals supporting the IRA. Most of the talking was done by people whose ancestors had come to the United States more than 100 years before and they had no first hand knowledge of Ireland at all. This has always contrasted in my mind with the way Mexican Americans relate to Mexico. Mexican-Americans do take great pride in our Hispanic heritage in terms of language, literature, music, food, and family traditions. But at the same time most have always kept a distance from being Mexican. Specifically, before anyone gets excited, I am referring to the concept of being an advocate for the so-called socialist movement of Mexican nationalism. Growing up we often heard the phrase “De Aqui or De Alla” referring to whether someone was Mexican-American or Mexican. Just like the Irish we have had to prove ourselves in the past to be true Americans but unlike the Irish we seem to take no real interest in the internal affairs of Mexico. I must admit I sometimes watch satellite Aztec television beamed from Mexico City with my father and see political discussions by reporters, so-called philosophers, and politicians debating what the peasants think. To be honest it feels like we are watching another planet. What has evolved is two people with relatively the same cultural and lineage but two vastly different concepts of government and expectations of government.

In the late 1990’s, Mexican reformers where concerned that Mexicans living in the United States who had dual citizenship would be a threat to the traditional ruling parties if they voted in Mexican elections. The reality is that Mexicans living in the United States even if given the chance to vote in Mexican elections do not participate in significant numbers. Is that because they feel they cannot make a difference or is it because they believe they have joined a greater cause in being American? When you think about this, the complaints that some have that the United States will someday become like Mexico because of immigration seem ridiculous. It is clear that Mexicans come to the United States to be Americans not Mexicans, while retaining worthy values from home, for the most part. This raises the question to what extent should MexicanAmericans care about what happens in Mexico or other Latin American countries. Will caring about what happens in Mexico make us any less American? In the way that Jewish Americans for example, have influence over Israel something that Mexican-Americans should copy? Should Mexican-Americans try to influence Mexico positively or just be concerned with our own domestic issues? Lets not forget that in Mexico and other Latin American countries, there are many who consider immigrants to the United States as traitors or worse. So, it is possible that even if Mexican-Americans wanted to be involved they might not be always welcomed. Do we have any right to influence Mexico or do we have a duty to try, as Irish-Americans do? If we try, will we be viewed as Imperialist Americans or just global citizens trying to be good neighbors?

Is this because we feel that the government of Mexico is so corrupt that it is hopeless or is it just that we feel By Tony Magaña so American that what happens there does not matter. page 14 contempo magazine

The UTPA Folkloric Dancers, always in colorful festive costumes, give a treasured performance at the Renaissance Hotel. The UTPA Folkloric dancers opened the show with a dance performance, “Reboso”, and then fashions were modeled featuring Spring and Summer selections from “Graciela’s at the Yard” in San Antonio, Texas. The coordinators for the event were Becky Strong, IWB events committee chair, Sarah Saldaña, IWB events committee, Miros Jensen, IWB events committee, Christie Cantu, UTPA development officer, and Debbie Maqueda, director of Sales for the Renaissance Casa de Palmas. The International Women’s Board of the UTPA Foundation honors students with college scholarships and it’s members serve as ambassadors around the World for the University of Texas, Pan American. The style show featured a number of original Spring and Summer fashion creations inspired by and adorned with fabrics from Guatemala, Mexico, Peru and Panama presented by Graciela’s at the Yard. The fabrics were colorful & looked comfortable in warm weather. A range of styles from casual to dressy were featured, all with matching accessories including smart looking head wear. What’s In Style for Black Tie & Formal Wear Fashions By Vanessa Valiente

fashion wear courtesy of Graciela’s at the Yard, San Antonia The rare black-tie event can be quite intimidating for both men and women, but with some instructions and suggestions you will be looking tasteful as well as stylish on these unique Rio Grande Valley evenings. The first problem to deal with is whether or not it actually is a blacktie occasion. Traditionally, this formal function could be an evening wedding, opening night at the opera or an extremely special party. In the latter case, most invitations will state the dress code quite clearly if it is to be a formal happening, but for the instances it does not we must look at the clues: venue, time and host. Some settings that scream black-tie are grand ballrooms, large mansions and extravagant locations. Anything else, like a restaurant or in-home party will most likely not be tuxedo time. Also, any gathering that begins in the early afternoon is liable to be casual; it is when the party takes place after 6pm that you need to think twice about your garb. page 26 contempo magazine

Lastly, the host is the key to your outfit de-puzzlement. If your host tends to be very glamorous, you must follow suit. In contrast, if your host leans more toward the casual then by all means, pass on the floor length gown. Either way, the best method to find out the dress code is to simply ask politely. That is far less embarrassing then showing up tremendously over or under dressed. Now that you have confirmed that it is indeed a formal fiesta, the looming question has arrived. What to wear? If you are a man and making wardrobe decisions put fear in your heart, you are in luck. The choices for a gentleman at a formal celebration are relatively slim. Obviously, you must don a tuxedo, but there are some variations to a modern tuxedo to think about. As a side note, black-tie is not white tie, which is the highest of formality that calls for a long coat and tails and the most conservative of dress. When dealing with black –tie, every man should have his own tuxedo in his closet. To continue renting one after a certain age is far from

chic and could end up costing the same as owning one. A few things to keep in mind when purchasing the fabulous penguin suit is be sure it is timeless. Avoid out-dated rules, but stay away from outlandishly fashion forward pieces. Always a safe choice is a tux with a notch or peak-lapel jacket with one or two buttons. If you want to try something else, there is always the shawl collar that was favored by James Dean in his day and has been making a comeback of current. Whichever collar you choose, avoid satin. A superior choice would be self-finished lapels. As for the shirt, you will want to avoid the mandarin collar, which can date you. Instead choose the standard laydown collar consistently worn by George Clooney on the red carpet. The wing tip collar is also a popular choice, but nothing beats the laydown. The shirtfront options for both styles are the same. Your selection includes fine pleats, delicate ribs and black enamel or pearl like buttons. The cuffs are another important aspect of your look. Although

French cuffs are not mandatory, cuff links are the ultimate sophistication and a great way to demonstrate your individual personality, as is your choice to have a cummerbund. A cummerbund is no longer necessary. If you do sport it, white and black are the best colors to use in a faille fabric. Using satin in any other colors looks dated and ostentatious. For those that choose to skip the cummerbund, do not wear a belt. Simply strap on some suspenders. You may have some fun with these when dressing for your date. Although you do not want to match her dress perfectly, you do want to compliment it. For instance, if she were wearing a black, blue or white gown, red suspenders on a man would be a fun choice. The last portion of the tux is the pant and shoes. You can have one pleat or none and the side of your pant is the only time satin will look classic. Here too though, you may see a faille fabric instead of the sheen of satin. contempomag.com page 27

fashion wear courtesy of Graciela’s at the Yard, San Antonia The tux generally has a cuff at the end of a man’s pant, but a more upto-date touch would be to skip it entirely. The shoes too have changed. Be gone with the patent leather and embrace a pair of well-polished black lace-ups. Once the shoes and thin black socks have been put on, you are now ready to wait while your wife finishes getting ready. Formal events, in relation to fashion, are for the woman who wants to be seen. Rigid style rules are non-existent. There are only a few things to remember when a lady is choosing a dress for a black-tie shindig. Your gown or skirt must be floor length and avoid linen. As with any occasion, you want to choose an outfit that flatters your figure by highlighting your assets and minimizing your problem areas. For instance, the woman with an amazing back and not so fabulous arms should wear a long sleeve gown that dips mouth dropping low in the back. There is also the strapless, sweetheart neckline, spaghetti straps or merely a low neckline for the woman with a sexy décolleté and great skin. Then there is the use of slits in the front, back or side page 28 contempo magazine

of the dress for the females with great legs. Next you will want to consider the material and color. Silk, satin, embroidery, metallics and beads are well suited for formal attire. The things to steer away from are velvets and rhinestones, which are difficult to pull off. Colors that look attractive on most everyone are rich bold colors. Royal blue, emerald green, gold, communist red, sunny yellow, terra-cotta orange, burnt sienna or white; however, the lady who truly wants to stand out is the woman who wears the bold color with a pattern. Patterns for formal wear is not like a pattern on everyday attire. A pattern should be placed in certain areas of the gown and can wind through out the fabric. This could be leaves, a snake, large exotic flowers or simple jeweled swirls. The choices are absolutely endless. Black is always a safe choice, but quite the bore. In order to avoid the yawn fest your dress must be unique in style and décor. Black feathers could adorn the bottom of the skirt or perhaps many intricate straps

could decorate the neckline. Hilary Swank and Penelope Cruz did an excellent job of this at the Oscars this past year. Once you have the dress, the accessories must complete the look. Jewelry can be large and extravagant. Diamonds, jewels or striking stones are all welcome to embellish your appearance. This is when the match-matchy look could possible work, but it is definitely more modern to have jewelry that compliments each other versus matching perfectly. The last portion of the outfit are the heels. When wearing a floor length gown, shoes do not often show. The best choice for your feet is open-toe heels that are comfortable and go well with your dress. Leave most of the glam and fun for your frock and gems. The heels, although gorgeous in its simplicity, should just be along for the ride at a black-tie event. After following these few ideas no longer will the summons to an ornate summer bash make you hesitate. Being equipped with your

fashion do’s and don’ts should eliminate your dress stress, making men and women equally excited to attend such a special affair. Titling Your Assets

How you structure ownership of your assets can make the difference between a smooth estate transfer and messy — and taxing — legal proceedings.

Provided By: Melissa Magaña, Financial Advisor Wachovia Securities, LLC, Member NYSE/SIPC When you’ve built an estate over a lifetime, it’s important to make sure your wishes for its distribution are fulfilled. Unfortunately, many people overlook basic estate planning that would avoid troublesome family situations. Properly titling your assets is vital in making sure your estate is distributed simply and quickly to your heirs. How you title your assets generally wins out over what you have stated in your will, explains Carlton Brown, Estate Planning Specialist with Wachovia Securities. “The will doesn’t trump what you have placed on a beneficiary designation [on an account]. Often there is inconsistency with what the intent is.” That can lead to unintended consequences, such as an ex-spouse inheriting significant assets, or federal estate taxes being paid when they could have been avoided.

The goal is to avoid probate and arrange a speedy transfer to intended beneficiaries. For married couples looking to make sure the surviving spouse keeps assets after the first death, joint tenancy with rights of survivorship is the best option. For singles or accounts in one person’s name, a beneficiary should be named on the account, with the assets either “payable on death” or “transfer on death.” Those with estates over $2 million should consider a number of options to sidestep unnecessary tax bites; at a tax rate of 46 percent in 2006 and 45 percent for 2007 through 2009, it’s a significant issue. Under current law, it is possible for a couple to exempt $4 million of their estate from federal estate taxes, or $2 million per person. But having all the assets in one person’s name or having joint tenancy ownership precludes that. “It is very important to split assets in half,” says Brown, explaining that use of instruments such as bypass trusts allow Types of Ownership one spouse’s assets to claim an exemption and still allow another exemption of To determine how to approach titling assets, it’s important to understand the the remaining spouse’s assets on his or her death. The Power of Wind Discovery in Progress

Until Europeans discovered the advantage of the triangular sail, they could not tack into the wind with their square rigged sails. The technology of triangular sail was discovered in the East as European trade expanded. To tack is to “virtually sail into the wind by traveling at right angles to the wind. The rushing air over the wayward side of the sail pushes the craft by creating low air pressure on the other, leeward side of the sail, ever so slightly in a tack, generating forward motion.

The same force generates a degree of forward motion by transferring forward energy to the long keel below the vessel. The keel redirects the angular force of the wind, forward. When Europeans first discovered tacking they designed ships with triangular sails forward and aft of the mainsails. This enabled their vessels to reach open water without favorable winds for the first time. The RC sailboat pictured here was built & piloted by Kurt Watson of Mission, Texas. contempomag.com page 33

Preventative Medicine for the Boomer

A Life Saver from many serious medical conditions For most us going to the doctor has to rate as one of life’s most unpleasant experiences. To be honest even doctors hate to go to the doctor. With the possible exception of discovering a pregnancy the best result for most of us is that the only good news will be no news. We have to miss work and sit in the medicine filled odorous patient room waiting for the doctor after having sat in the waiting room forever. It’s no wonder we usually just go when we absolutely have to find some type of relief for an offending symptom. Visiting the doctor’s office when we feel fine would seem to have a low priority at best for most of us. Most of us also live in a state of denial about our health and lives. We do not like to admit we will get older and undoubtedly face some diseases in our lives as time moves forward. However, it’s becoming clearer that early detection of disease by medical screening may have potentially profound effects not only on our lifespan but also on the quality of our everyday lives. Since most screening procedures are very low risk it would seem rational for everyone to have every screening test possible on a frequent basis to prevent disease. However, the reality is that there is a fixed budget for health care overall in society such that if all the resources were used for screening none would be left for treatment. Therefore due to limited availability of resources medical screening is used where its is seen to be effective in changing the outcome of disease by early detection and is also reliable at detecting the disease process developing. It is becoming more common place for highly insured CEO’s of mapage 38 contempo magazine

jor corporations, professional athletes, entertainers, and of course the President of the United States to undergo “executive physicals” looking for hidden disease. Part of these reason this is done for “key” personal is that insurance companies require it for high priced “key man” policies and they know that early detection of disease can in least in these cases save them money. One of the difficult questions to be answered has been however for the general population is whether such screenings would reduce overall health care expenditures and be justified by a financial savings argument. As recently as a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2008, there is no convincing evidence that preventative medicine will overall for society as whole reduce our health care expenditures. However, and this is very important, “they may still be worthwhile because they confer substantial health benefits relative to their cost.” Most importantly, the ability to detect a disease early enough in its course to save a life or prevent disability may be dramatic for an individual. Continuing medical research has resulted in consensus among physicians that certain preventative procedures may for the individual have significant impacts on their health. It is beyond the intent of the writer to give every recommendation for every situation to the reader. I strongly advise that every reader discuss preventative measures with his or her own physician but we will review some major points in this article. According to the National Center for Health Statistics the leading causes of death in the United States ranked in order are heart dis-

ease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory disease (lung), accidents, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Influenza/Pneumonia, Nephritis, nephritic syndrome, and nephrosis (kidney), and Septicemia (blood infection). Lets examine what someone over age 40 can do reduce their risk from these maladies. Heart Disease and Stroke A physician at the bedside can listen to the heart for abnormalities in rhythm and sound to detect treatable abnormalities. The measurement of blood pressure can reveal hypertension (high blood pressure), which can be totally without symptoms. Recently it has been shown that even what was thought previously to be only mild hypertension if left untreated can create significant risks over time. Blood pressure should be measured about every two years routinely. A fasting blood test to detect fractionated lipid profiles (meaning fat and cholesterol) may reveal an asymptomatic condition of metabolism, which has increased risk for stroke or heart disease. More recently computer imaging technology of the coronary arteries and other major arteries of the bodies has been advocated by some as a means of detecting risk of heart disease. Although there is no clear-cut consensus on this approach it should be noted that such procedures are essentially low risk. Advocates of these procedures point out that 57% of people who die from their first heart attack had no previous knowledge of their heart disease so that if they had undergone these procedures that might have lead them to more preventative measures. Men over age 40 and post menopausal women should discuss with

their physicians the potential benefit of taking low dose aspirin to reduce their risk of heart disease. Cancer Mammography every year for women with breast cancer risk factors and every two years can detect breast cancer often in early enough stages to allow effective treatment. Some women may require specialized further testing depending upon their history. One of the greatest tragedies of modern medicine is that many women out of fear or misguided cultural ideas do not undergo this type of screening. Similarly Pap smear screening for cervical cancer should be done in a matter determined by woman’s risk for cancer. If she has normal smears for many years this interval can be increased. Although the risk of cervical cancer is less in elderly women than younger women it is now recommended that women aged 65 years and older who have a new sex partner resume routine screening. One of the most neglected screening procedures is screening for colorectal cancer. Early detection of colorectal cancer can reveal precancerous lesions, which can be cured while the cancer if unscreened may not create symptoms until it is very advanced and the prognosis fatal. For people with African ancestry the screening should begin at age 45 for others at age 50. There has been some controversy over exactly what procedures are best but generally speaking a radiological procedure alone is not as good as undergoing a direct examination using a scoped device placed directly in the colon. Although this is uncomfortable, patients can be sedated for the procedure and it only very rarely has complications. New tests detecting specific DNA markers for cancer as well as the older test for “occult” or hidden blood in the stool can also be helpful but do not substitute for direct examination. Lung Cancer and Lung Disease Early detection for lung cancer in smokers remains a challenge. Some types of lung cancer progress very rapidly by the time they become detectable while others may be more responsive to treatment. It should be remembered that once a smoker stops smoking, they would over time reduce their risk of lung cancer and lung disease. The overwhelming cause of lung disease is smoking. Remember that you can lose up to 70% of your lung function if you live a sedentary lifestyle before major symptoms of lung disease occur. By that time however every small incremental loss of further function becomes critical so that a person may rapidly go from being short of breath with a brisk short walk to requiring oxygen all the time even when just sitting. The point is to stop smoking before you have any symptoms. Accidents Thousands of people die every year in car accidents because they do not wear their seat belts for that little trip down the street to the neighbor store. Not only on the road, however, can people die from an injury. Slips in the bathroom kill many elderly people so it is imperative that safe footing and handrails be installed for any one with any physical impairment that put them at high risk. Alcohol, mishandling of medication, handling of firearms, working on roofs, drowning, and other things which people will continue to do are all needless ways to end a useful life. Alzheimer’s Disease Dedicated research by the world’s greatest scientists continues into the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. I will in a future article go into detail about this disease. What is very important to know is that not all mental problems in older people are due to Alzheimer’s disease. Diseases of the endocrine glands like the thyroid, diabetes, and even depression can be a primary cause of brain dysfunction. Elderly people with brain dysfunction should be thoroughly evaluated by a neurologist to determine the cause. Often a medical condition can be identified which can be effectively treated or at least controlled. contempomag.com page 39

Otherwise healthy people can be expected to have relatively normal brain function into there nineties so one should never just attribute it to “old age”. For those who do suffer from “Alzheimer’s Disease” diagnosed by a neurologist there are effective treatments, which for many patients can slow down the progression of the disease and maybe improve function in the early stages. Influenza/Pneumonia The yearly flu vaccine should be given to elderly people over age 65 and many younger people with chronic illness. The flu develops in Asian bird populations every year and then spreads about the world every winter. Scientists make an educated guess about which three viruses will be the dominant ones every year. Since it can vary every year, a new vaccine is required yearly. This protects against a virus. In addition there is a vaccine against bacterial pneumonia caused by pneumococcus. It is recommended that this be repeated every 5 years beginning at age 65. It is important to remember that the yearly viral vaccine and the pneumococcal immunization are two different entities, which do not cross protect. People over age 65 and sometimes younger depending on the circumstances as determined by your doctor need both. Nephrosis, Nephrotic Syndrome Diabetes and hypertension play a large role in the development of kidney disease. Hispanics have a much higher incidence of diabetes than is found in the population as a whole. It is very important to tell your physician if there is a family history of diabetes. Many patients unfortunately neglect to follow their doctor’s recommendations for treating diabetes in the early stages because they have minimal symptoms. The price for this can be costly as permanent damage to the brain, eyes, and kidneys can progress without symptoms until significant dysfunction has occurred. Close medical follow up and treatment of page 40 contempo magazine

diabetes can reduce the risk that a diabetic will suffer kidney failure and require dialysis. Septicemia The elderly and chronically ill are especially at risk for bacterial or fungal infection, which can get into the blood stream. Today most patients are diagnosed with infection in early stages before such a severe condition can occur. It is not unusual unfortunately for physicians to see an elderly person with limited transportation and few people checking on them to present to the emergency room in such a state who live alone. Because they do not want to be a bother, lack transportation, or fear medical costs, they may allow a treatable infection to progress to life threatening. The hallmark symptom of this condition is confusion and amazingly there may be no fever. Of course only providence knows what will happen to each individual in the future, but as you can see, you can reduce your risk of suffering many diseases or at least their severity by proper preventive measures. If you live a healthy lifestyle and follow good preventative measures your chance for long and enjoyable life is greatly enhanced. Do not let feeling uneasy about undergoing a colonoscopy or mammography deny your right to live. Know that if it is discovered that you have diabetes, early heart disease or cancer that in many cases effective treatment can be given that will lengthen and improve your life. Most of us have a loving and caring family for whom our well-being is important. Not undergoing preventative measures is as irresponsible to them as if you were playing the Russian roulette game in the movie “Deer Hunter”. Technology Upper Valley Solar Power It’s Time Has Come A green technology, which is immediately available, is the use of solar water heaters. A typical solar-water heating system can reduce the need for conventional water heating in an average home by about two-thirds according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Since the 1970’s technological improvements and industrial development have resulted in ever improving efficient systems. The use of an approved solar water heating system now comes with a 30% tax credit granted under the U.S. Energy Policy Act. Systems eligible for a tax credit must be listed and certified by the Department of Energy’s non-profit partner, the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC). Alternatively, residents of Florida and Hawaii can use their state certification programs. As yet Texas has no formal certification system. A typical solar water heating system consists of a mechanism to collect heat and a tank to store the water. Water can be actively pumped through the heat collecting solar panel with an electric water pump (called an active system) or the heating of the water itself can be used to move the water (called a passive system). Some systems use an indirect mode where the water is secondarily heated by a fluid or mechanism that is directly heated by the sun. In areas where freezing temperatures may occur this type of system may be the only option instead of using a system where the water is directly heated. The typical solar water heating system costs between $2000 and $4500 dollars. Although the initial cost of a solar heating system is higher than a conventional system over the span of a few years the cost savings will be realized and grows. With the rising costs of fossil fuels there is no doubt that electricity will become more expensive while sunshine will remain free. The Texas State Energy office maintains an online calculator at http://www.infinitepower.org/calc_waterheating.htm where you can put in your homes statistics to get an idea of what would be your personal savings. A solar water heating system can pay for itself in 1.5 to 7 years time. In order for your home to use a solar water heater your roof should be unshaded and generally facing south. Since the Valley rarely experiences freez-

ing temperatures it is an excellent location for the use of solar heating. One unfortunate situation is that despite the fact that Arizona, Florida, and California have passed laws forbidding local governments or housing associations from banning solar collectors that has not happened in Texas. It is now very common in Florida and Arizona to see whole subdivisions where there is solar water heating, solar swimming pool heating, solar power electrical units, and solar space heating units on every home. There are sophisticated methods for calculating how large or how many solar panels will be needed for a particular family in a certain size house, which should be used before installation. Contractors usually follow a guideline of about 20 square feet (2 square meters) of collector area for each of the first two family members. For every additional person, add 8 square feet (0.7 square Meters. For active systems, the size of the solar storage tank increases with the size of the collector—typically 1.5 gallons per square foot of collector. A small, 66-gallon system is usually big enough for one to three people; a medium-size, 80-gallon system works well for a three- or four-person household; and a large, 120-gallon system is appropriate for four to six people. Occasionally the solar water heating system will require the use of a backup electrical or gas system. These can be incorporated into the system or you might consider using a tankless on demand water heater. Maintenance is usually required every few years and most systems are quite reliable. The current negativity to solar energy especially in the finer neighborhoods of the Valley needs to be changed. The initial investment for modest homeowners may be a barrier but it is clear that energy costs are only going to increase in the future. This represents the best way individual homeowners can reduce carbon emissions and go green. It’s time for Texas to follow other states and remove the barriers for individual homeowners to use solar energy. By Tony Magaña

Electrical Storm Surge Protection & Computer/ Phone Interface The Easy Way

Since we are approaching Hurricane Season, I thought we would go over some tips for protecting your PC from Mother Nature. You should be using a good surge protector, in the $30 or more range and you should replace surge protectors every two years. The protectors have changed a lot in the last couple of years, so get a new one for added features. Next, consider a battery back up system. APC is my recommendation. You will spend at least $45.00 on a good back up system that you should replace every 5 years. OK, so now the final step. The only way to be totally sure of protection during a storm is to unplug the computer and it’s components all the way back to the receptacle outlet. That’s what I do when a hurricane threatens. Get the PC up off the floor, and pack it up in something waterproof. The PC box is the most expensive and has all of your info on it, so at least protect it, if not your monitor and peripherals. And don’t forget to back up and protect the backups!!! Now for those of you who like to use your phones for everything but are not quite sure how to: get the pictures and videos off your phone and onto your PC, or get ring tones from your PC to your phone, or back up your phone book. You need to get a Bluetooth capable phone, and get a Bluetooth adapter for your PC. Then you can pair your phone to your PC just like a wireless headset, and transfer items back and forth from your phone to your PC and back again. If you have a laptop that is Bluetooth capable, then you are halfway there. How about all those pictures you are taking

with that new digital camera of yours? Connecting the camera to a cable, then to your PC, downloading the pictures to your computer, then having to delete the pictures off the camera? There is an easier way. Pick up a Digital Card Reader. I recommend the Ativa 24-in-1 card reader. It will take almost everything out there. Just plug it in, and you can see your pictures right away. You can also delete, cut-n-paste, print, and e-mail right from the card reader! You can even edit the photos before you print, save or e-mail your photos! Once you have moved all the photos to your PC, your card is empty and ready to be refilled. Also, many phones come with a card reader adapter for the memory card in your phone. You can plug into the card reader, and transfer your phone images that way as well. Are any of you having phone trouble? Those of you with cordless phones and wireless internet could be experiencing a conflict between the cordless and the wireless. If you have a 2.4 GHZ phone system, this interferes with wireless a lot, and viceversa. The 5.8 GHZ phones are only a little better. The new DECT 6.0 digital phones have the best compatibility with wireless routers. So before you pull all of your hair out, or chew-out the support tech on the phone demanding a better connection, maybe you need a new phone. Ok, that is all for now, have fun and happy computing Computer Doctor Michael Bilyeu Computer_doctor@myctsonline.com contempomag.com page 53
