Featured Story

TAKING PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE Long-time TMC Driver, Joe Searfino Jr., gave us some insight on what it means to be a part of the Black & Chrome, and why he takes pride in his ride. When I went to truck driving school in the late nineties, I had no idea who I wanted to drive for until I saw a TMC brochure. On the front was an impressive black truck, which back then was a Kenworth T600. I was hooked from that day. Everyone in class said I was crazy to try flatbed. They were right - I am crazy. The hard work is the best part about it! Aside from safety, I knew maintaining your equipment is of utmost importance to TMC. I take great pride in my ride, a brand new Peterbilt 579. I was raised in a strict environment and was a United States Marine. I have experience in keeping things in tiptop shape, and take great pride in my work. On my down time on the weekends, you can even find me sitting on my black milk crate, polishing my wheels, tanks, and steps. My favorite place in our Des Moines terminal is the wash bay. I love to use the high-speed buffers on my truck to keep up the high shine. If I’m at a truck stop doing my 34-hour reset out on the road, you won’t find me lounging around. If weather permits, I’ll be out cleaning my truck. Drivers from other companies often come over and comment on how dedicated I am to keeping my truck clean. I owe a lot of my work ethic to my former trainer, Jeff Floyd, who is now VP in TMC’s Business Development Department. He was one of the best trainers there and taught me how to run things the TMC way.

I like to look at my truck as my house, because I do live there most of the time. I have many of the same policies for my truck, such as not wearing shoes on the carpet and keeping the interior clean and organized. On occasion, I spend my own money to get my engine washed. Every day, there are drivers sitting somewhere, waiting at a shipper or consignee. Why not use this time for a quick clean up? Taking pride in your ride is so rewarding. I get thumbs up from passing cars, and at traffic lights I get people yelling about how nice my truck looks. It’s like the feeling you get when you get a fresh haircut at the barbershop. I love my job and I love the company I work for. I am a firm believer in if you take care of it, it will take care of you. So everyone out on the road - be safe and keep it clean!

Joe Searfino Jr

“WHERE CAN YOU DRIVE TOP-OF-THE-LINE EQUIPMENT WITH ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES AND WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT TRULY VALUES YOUR SUCCESS AND SUPPORTS YOUR GOALS? YOU GUESSED IT, RIGHT HERE AT TMC. FROM THE MOMENT YOU STEP FOOT INTO ORIENTATION, YOU ARE IN GOOD HANDS WITH A CLASS ACT COMPANY.”

Rider Program We asked our Drivers’ passengers questions about their experience traveling with their Driver. Here is what some of them had to say: 10-year-old Brenden:

10-Year-Old Kaden:

Q: What has been the best part about riding in a truck? A: Going through different states and seeing all of the cool stuff.

Q: What has been the best part about riding in a truck? A: Spending time with my dad.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the truck, where would you go and why? A: Texas! Because I miss my Aunt Meagan.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the truck, where would you go and why? A: Houston, Texas because there are a lot of supercars in Houston.

Q: Why do you think your Driver loves his job? A: Because his dad used to do it and he liked driving with him and going on the road.

Q: Why do you think your Driver loves his job? A: My dad has told me it’s because he makes money to spend on his bratty kids.

Q: What are you doing with your time while riding in the truck? A: Taking cool pictures, playing with my Legos, or playing with my Kindle.

Q: What are you doing with your time while riding in the truck? A: Watching TikTok.

Q: What have you learned from your ride-a-long? A: I learned to be safe on the trucks and you need to look in the mirrors. Do not, like, just walk out in the parking lot without a parent because big trucks can’t see you too good. I learned how to strap stuff down. How to hook up a trailer. Don’t fool around on the top bed.

Q: What have you learned from your ride-a-long? A: How the loads are strapped and tarped.

10-Year-Old Keira:

11-Year-Old Caleb:

Q: What has been the best part about riding in a truck? A: I got to see my Daddy more than just on the weekend. I also was able to see other states that I have not seen before.

Q: What has been the best part about riding in a truck? A: Seeing the views.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the truck, where would you go? A: I would go to New York City because I would like to see the Statue of Liberty. Q: Why do you think your Driver loves his job? A: I think my daddy loves his job because he used to be in the Coast Guard and traveled a lot and traveling is one of his comfort zones, besides being with his family! Q: What are you doing with your time while riding in the truck? A: While riding in the truck I was coloring, doing word searches, making bracelets, taking lots of pictures, and getting daddy snacks. Q: What have you learned from your ride-a-long? A: I have learned that Wisconsin is the place that has the most cheese in the United States. I also learned that my daddy sweats a lot while tying down the loads.

Fall 2020: Destination Excellence

Q: If you could go anywhere in the truck, where would you go and why? A: California, because it is where I was born and moved away when I was 3. Q: Why do you think your Driver loves his job? A: He loves to travel and see cool places. Q: What are you doing with your time while riding in the truck? A: Playing on my phone and chatting with dad. Q: What have you learned from your ride-a-long? A: The view is better than my phone.

Why TMC?

We asked some of our employees what drew them to come work at TMC. Here are some of their responses:

Cory Jaeger, Dedicated Fleet Manager

Jeff Geist, Training Coordinator Manager

“Growing up in the transportation industry all of my life helped lead me to TMC. I have been in the transportation industry for 20+ years now, with 10 of those years being at TMC.

“I chose to come to TMC 25 years ago. When I was in driving school, I would see TMC trucks roll by on I-95. I must say, it was the combination of the trucks and the reputation of the company. Everything I heard about TMC convinced me this was the place to be.”

Working for the largest employee-owned flatbed trucking company in the country may seem like a lot, but when you come into the office and everyone knows your name it shows that we may be the largest, but we also have the mentality that we are not just a number like other companies. When people ask where I work at and I tell them TMC, they say, ‘Oh the ones with the shiny black trucks.’ We all take pride not only in our work, but also in the image of our company. I like how every day there are different challenges, so you are not doing the same thing every day. Even after a hard day, coming back in the next day is easy to do as the people you work with make your job easier.”

Jennah Macallister, Logistics Sales Representative “I started at TMC last September and I honestly had no idea what to expect. Today, I can tell you that my move to TMC was the best decision I could have ever made for myself. Not only does my current role as an Logistics Sales Representative keep me ignited, but the culture we base our success off of is more than incredible to walk into every day. The drive, motivation, positivity, and empowerment of individuals I have had the honor to come across in the company is not something you find everywhere. I truly believe this stems directly from great leadership and the strong morals TMC instills into its people. One team, one family!” Brennan Rosell, Carrier Sales Specialist “I started with TMC as an intern while going into my senior year of college at Iowa State University. I was majoring in Supply Chain Management and the wonderful world of Logistics seemed like a great place to start a career. I had a great internship experience while at the Ames, IA office. My time in Ames encouraged me to make the move on up to Madision, WI where TMC was opening a new branch. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the TMC team. Every day the Logistics world brings new challenges and that’s an easpect that makes the job so fun. You are consistently being brought new material to your desk, day-in and day-out. TMC being an employee-owned company makes for a great culture around the office. We all share a common goal which is to grow as a company!” Beau Armstrong, Team Leader Logistics “Building a successful career in sales is all about earning an opportunity to prove yourself and then providing consistent first-class service. Back in 2018 when I joined TMC and still today, I could see no better company to team up with for the long haul and to provide excellent service for my customers. Having worked for a major transportation company in the past and having ran my own business, I had high expectations when looking at coming to TMC. Upon spending a week at the corporate offices in Des Moines, I could not have been more delighted. The practical, hard-working, buttoned down culture here is very representative of what built America and I am very proud to be a part of it.”

Fall 2020: Destination Excellence

Melissa Comeaux, Carrier Sales Specialist “I have always said you should learn something new every day. If you stop learning, you stop living, and in Logistics it is ever changing! Starting here in December of 2019 and having almost 20 years of transportation experience, I am so glad I made the leap to TMC! I am excited to come to work every day and be a part of all that Logistics brings! I am learning something new every day in LTL, sharing that knowledge, working with both FTL and LTL, expanding my transportation knowledge as a Carrier Sales Specialist and looking forward to a great future here. People talk about teamwork and feeling like a family at different companies, and TMC really exemplifies these things! My coworkers and managers make coming to work enjoyable and encourage growth, which makes for great leadership qualities. As our team grows with hard work and dedication, we grow as a family! Thanks for welcoming me and letting us see our potential!” Ashley Stelzel, Logistics Sales Team Lead “I chose to come to TMC because they uphold one of the most important values in my life...integrity. TMC motivates me and taps into an internal drive for success. After two years here, I am proud to say I am the Brownsburg Carrier Sales Specialist Team Lead and hope to continue to learn and grow here for many

Cassidy Bennett, Marketing Coordinator “I began my career with TMC in 2018 as a Marketing Coordinator. I wear many hats in this role - from creating content for CDL schools, interacting with potential and active drivers on social media, collaborating with the Recruiting Department to genereate leads... the list continues. Graduating college, I knew I wanted a career that involved assisting and helping others. Communications is a very broad degree, so I narrowed my search down to a field I was immersed in growing up - Trucking. My dad (Stuart Bennett) has driven truck my entire life. With my dad as an example, I have witnessed and experienced first-hand how diligent, hard-working, and selfless our nation’s truck drivers are. If there was an opportunity where I could give back at least a fraction of what our drivers do for us, I want to seize it. This was a huge reason I chose TMC - TMC prides themselves on being the best, and our nation’s truck drivers deserve nothing but the best. This company has an unyielding dedication and commitment to our nation’s drivers. All of our departments make sure that each driver, from new to tenured, is set up for success. I love being part of a team that incorporates these values into every aspect of the driver experience. I can’t wait to see what opportunities lie ahead.”

Seven years ago, TMC Transportation became an employee-owned company! Congratulations to our employees who are now fully vested with our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)! An Employee Stock Ownership Plan provides our workforce with an ownership interest in the company. In an ESOP, TMC provides their employees with stock ownership at no cost to them. ESOP shares are given to employees as a reward for loyalty, hard work, and dedication. Shares are allocated to employees and may be held in an ESOP trust until the employee retires or leaves the company. 2020 Driver of the First Quarter Charles Locklear Charles Locklear has been selected to represent 2020 Driver of the First Quarter! Since starting his driving career with TMC back in 2000, he has proven himself to be a quality, professional driver.

“If I’m watching you do something, I’m not trying to see if you’re doing something wrong or if you’re going to make a mistake. I’m just trying to learn. I’m constantly trying to learn.”

Weekend home time was the initial reason Charles became interested in TMC. However, Charles has since grown accustomed to the trucking lifestyle. Throughout his 20 years on the Black and Chrome Team, he has grown to really appreciate the people here. “I enjoy working with the drivers on this team. I enjoy working with Jason, my Fleet Manager, and the guys on this account.”

In Charles’ travel around the country, his favorite place is Washington. Living in Shannon, North Carolina, Charles says he really enjoys the opportunity to go out west and thinks it’s beautiful.

The most important part of the job, Charles says, is safety. “Being safe and doing my job gets me from one day to the next,” he explains. Charles believes that his success largely comes from always being ready to learn.

14

Criteria for Driver of the Quarter recognition includes years of service with the company, safe driving record, excellent customer service, professionalism, and overall quality performance. Once a driver is recognized as a Driver of the Quarter, they are eligible to receive the prestigious Wheel Master Award.

Driving with TMC isn’t just a job for Charles, “It’s like a vacation. It’s something where I’ve seen a lot of places in the United States that I thought I’d never get to see. It’s traveling and meeting people.” Congratulations, Charles on being awarded 2020 Driver of the First Quarter! We are pleased to recognize your dedication to Excellence.

2020 Driver of the Second Quarter

Bruce Casler has been a part of the TMC team since 1999, after serving our country for many years in the Navy. Upon retirement from the military, he had to make another career choice. He told us that being a truck driver was a profession that fascinated him as a child, so he applied at TMC. Out of all the companies he could have chosen, he says he joined TMC because we “always have the best-looking equipment”.

Bruce Casler

TMC welcomed Bruce into the Black & Chrome Family, recognizing the skills, knowledge, and attributes he obtained while serving our country. For 21 years, he has been a driving force in the economy and a great help to keep America moving.

He was surprised upon hearing news of his appointment to Driver of the 2nd Quarter. Although he was not expecting the news, he tells us that it is an honor to be chosen. Some of the reasons Bruce was nominated for the award include his positive attitude and record of safe driving. “Bruce is a great guy to work with. He has a great sense of humor and positive attitude. It is an honor to have his tenure and knowledge working on the TMC Specialized Division,” Dedicated Operations Manager, Lukas Rold, shares. Congratulations, Bruce, on this honorable distinction!

Criteria for Driver of the Quarter recognition includes years of service with the company, safe driving record, and excellent customer service, professionalism, and overall quality performance. Heard from the

ROAD

In all the years we have been in business, Michele (our Managing Partner) has never received the level of driver compliments she is receiving since we moved to TMC. TMC has made shipping so easy. We are tending TMC everything we have.” – Tom Rubbo, American Log Homes

I just wanted to let you know that I saw Herschel [Criner III] (#10814) in a rest area on I-95 and I could not be more impressed. The equipment looked great, Herschel looked very professional, and he was wearing TMC gear. I deal with truck drivers all the time and the image TMC represents is unlike any other. Thank you TMC for representing the Transportation Industry well! Thank you, Herschel!” –Tyler, NC

“I had TMC drop off my new barn material yesterday. I would just like to send in saying how impressed I am. First thing is the team drivers Aaron [French] and Francis [Flory] (#13098) arrived a day early. I received a call and they were very professional. I met with them the next morning and showed them where I wanted to have them park. Aaron, the trainee, drove down a very narrow, windy, rock driveway and managed to turn the entire semi around in a small driveway. My wife and I asked Francis how long Aaron had been driving for TMC. To our astonishment, he told me this was only his third week. I am very happy to know that TMC has such good drivers, even just starting out. The truck looked extremely nice, too.” -Brian Ferrel “Wish we could use you more. You have great drivers and trucks, always professional.” –Barb, Meadow Valley Log Homes

18

“We received a call from another commercial driver to compliment Mr. [Ricky] Barnes (#11370) on his tarp job. They said the load looked sharp and so did the truck. It was a positive reflection of TMC! Mr. Barnes exhibited excellence. Please thank him. We talk to Rick bout doing a great job all the time with the truck! When I let Rick know about this, he was very excited!” -Cody

The Safety Department got a call from Jerry VanBlaricum. Mr. VanBlaricum is a retired trucker with over 30 years of experience and he wanted to compliment Tim [Heindel] (#12922) on his driving while on I-70 in Maryland. Mr. VanBlaricum stated that Tim was very courteous, professional, and safe to other trucks and vehicles. Thank you, Tim, for the job well done and representing TMC on the road!” -Oleg Taras Mervyak, Safety Manager
