Citizens of Fannin County:

Wow, where do I start to say Thank You for the four years I was privileged to serve as County Judge? The experience was awesome. There are some really super

people in this County. Many took the time to attend my retirement party. Thank You. Right now I can say the Future is bright for Fannin County.

1. You have elected a very good County Judge, Newt

Cunningham, to start off a new four year term. This is great. You also have four competent commissioners who have the well being of Fannin County as their priority.

2. You have a balanced

budget.

3. You have two new lakes in the County that will continue to spur growth.

There are many other positive things coming in the future.

Thanks, again, for the privilege to serve you!

Love God and your neighbor as yourself!

Local Radio Club On The Move

Press Release - Fannin County Amateur Radio Club (FCARC) is conducting our annual Winter Field Day Operations on January 28 & 29, 2023 at Lake Bonham Pavilion. We will also have our 2nd Annual Chili & Soup Cookoff Saturday evening!

The Winter Field Day event is held the last full-weekend of January. It is a chance to work the airwaves outside of typical operating environments. Winter Field Day also allows us to practice for all types of emergencies, where we are setting up and operating our radio equipment just like we would in those times. Set will begin around noon Saturday, January 28; with on air contacts starting at 1300 (1:00pm). Winter Field Day will be operating for 24 hours, which allows us to practice both in daytime as well as during the night.

We invite everyone to stop by and check out the amateur radio world. You do not have to be a licensed amateur radio operator to come join us, and this is a great opportunity to better understand how easy and important amateur radio is. Fannin County Amateur Radio Club website is www. k5frc.org. For more information, contact President Mark Hetherington at markh11@ aol.com. Check out

Fannin County Commissioners Court – Working for the County in 2023

Court. Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called the Regular Meeting of the Commissioners Court to order at 9:00 a.m.

noting Quorum was established. Judge Cun-

ningham then led an Invocation before asking Major James Manis, retired, to lead the Pledges. There were no Introductions.

5. Public Forum: A citizen of Ravenna spoke to encourage the citizens of Fannin County to daily seek and pray for answers to life’s challenges as well as to thank the court for their service and encourage them to bring Fannin County back to its roots of God-fearing ways and decisions. The speaker then gave a gift of the Founder’s Bible to the Judge and other members of the court. Next to speak was Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser who spoke to introduce Jonathan McCann who was formerly with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department and will be filling the position of Investigator for Attorney Glaser’s department.

6. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Newly Elected Official’s bonds for the following offices and terms: Newt Cunningham – County Judge – 4-year term; Doug Kopf –Commissioner Precinct 4 - 4 year term; April Gibbs – District Clerk - 4 year term; Louise Goodwater – Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 - 4 year term – County Judge for County Clerk: After Judge Cunningham read the agenda item, Commissioner Self made the motion to approve with Com-

missioner Lane seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Re-Elected Official’s bonds for the offices and terms: A.J. Self – Commissioner Precinct 2 – 4 year term; Charles Butler – Judge, County Court at Law – 4 year term; Tammy Biggar – County Clerk – 4 year term; Robert Clemmons – Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2 – 4 year term; Kenny Karl – Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3 – 4 year term; David Woodson – Treasurer – 4 year term – County Judge for County Clerk: Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

8. Discussion, consideration and action to appoint Judge Newt Cunningham to the Texoma Council of Governments Governing Board – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner Lane made the motion to appoint Judge Cunningham with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed with Judge Cunningham abstaining from voting.

9. Discussion, consideration and action to appoint Newt Cunningham as Chair of the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission – County Judge: Judge Cunningham, noting that he believes in full disclosure, stated that he and

his wife have property on Bois d’Arc Lake and if there is ever an issue specifically involving their property, he will not take a position on the commission or involve himself in any discussion regarding that issue. He further stated the same could be said should such an issue come before the Commissioners Court or is a referral from the Zoning Commission. After his statement, Commissioner Magness made the motion to appoint Judge Cunningham as Chair of Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed with Judge Cunningham abstaining from the vote.

10. Discussion regarding water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham opened the discussion by commenting on how groundwater is becoming saltier and saltier with the passage of time and the importance of planning for a source of water in the future to accommodate the many people coming into Fannin County. Like the discussion on the road issues held prior to this discussion, Commissioners as well as the citizenry discussed their thoughts with the consensus being that a plan is needed for the county. The question was asked of how much water would be allowed to be drawn for the county from Bois d’Arc and Ralph Hall lakes. A comment about previous lackluster negotiations made between the county and those lakes were made with a few more comments about the activities of a certain sand company and the water rights of Ladonia and the city of Bonham before Judge Cunningham concluded the discussion by reiterating the importance of figuring out a way for the citizenry of Fannin County to have necessary access to clean water in the future.

11. Discussion regarding Fannin County road issues – County Judge: After Judge Cunningham made comments on the need for appropriate planning on handling road issues, he opened the floor for thoughts and

suggestions from not only the Commissioners but from the citizenry on the matter. Commissioner Kopf started what would be a lengthy discussion on road problems by stating that in his district his plan is to begin by handling the problem of water on roads and focusing on ditches. Comments on manpower and equipment would follow with suggestions of utilizing 3rd party providers being met by the reality of extreme high dollar costs for contracted road work ($150,000 per mile.) A resident of CR 4915 spoke to first thank his commissioner before asking questions regarding a subdivision’s plans in his area, another citizen who moved here from Collin County in 2009 offered suggestions for a coalition of citizens to be formed who could consult with the commissioners on the road issues as well as the consideration for a possible bond election to acquire the funds needed to fix county roads. Commissioner Lane thanked that speaker and agreed with the helpfulness of hearing from the citizenry regarding road issues when Judge Cunningham summed up the issue by noting three important questions of (1) what does the county want, (2) what does the county need and (3) what is the county willing to pay for. Before the discussion would wrap up, a citizen of Windom came to the podium to ask if there was any way for the county to get developers to pay to improve the roads to the developments coming into the area? Commissioner Self responded by noting that the State of Texas just passed an action that would allow the county to do just that. He noted that a subdivision book is being rewritten to address best ways to implement impact fees. Commissioner Magness added his thoughts noting that each precinct basically has the same issues, and every Commissioner tries their best to improve what they’re facing.

12. Discussion, consideration and action to approve or reject the Evaluation Committee’s recommendation to hire a Construction Manager at Risk for the Justice Center renovations – Commissioner Precinct 3 for Purchasing Agent: Judge Cunningham first thanked Fannin County Purchasing Agent Shonda Magness for her efforts on this matter before asking her to explain all that has transpired. Ms. Magness began by noting the Evaluation Committee is comprised of Alicia Whipple, Bill Wilson, Cody Shipp, Claude Caffee, Mark Buchanan, Judge Blake, Brad Isbell and herself (though she and Mr. Isbell did not take part in voting.) She explained the Committee went out for bids in October, evaluated the respondents and shortened the list to four, before recommending Crossland Construction.

When asked by Judge Cunningham for information on the company, Ms. Magness explained they are a large company that were judged to be the most qualified in working with building courtrooms and associated legal offices as well as coming in with the lowest price of 3.2%. She further explained they will oversee the project, hold the subcontractors accountable and keep the project on track and on budget.

She noted they are knowledgeable with all the laws associated with the Fair Labor Acts and will have all the insurance bonds and deal with any issues that may come up. After her summation, Judge Cunningham commented on the amount of work involved with this and thanked all those who served on the Committee.

Commissioner Magness then made the motion to approve the Committees recommendation with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion. Before a vote was taken Commissioner Kopf

asked for clarification on the fee of 3.2% and the pre-construction fee of $5,000.00, a vote was then taken and the motion passed unanimously.

13. Discussion, consideration and action to fill the vacancies of boards, commissions and committees previously occupied by Judge Randy Moore – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted his willingness to serve on the boards unless there were any who requested to be considered.

Commissioner Magness made the motion for Judge Cunningham to serve on the boards with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

14. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to approve payment of bills.

15. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane voiced her appreciation for everyone’s attendance, wished all a blessed 2023 and noted how

she is looking forward to working with Judge Cunningham and Commissioner Kopf before wishing everyone a wonderful week.

Commissioner Self thanked the citizen from Ravenna for the new Bible and thanked a resident from his precinct for coming out to share her ideas and get involved.

Commissioner Magness stated it was a good discussion today and noted that though there is not always agreement among everyone, it is good to know people’s opinions about how things are going, and to say that he does listen to those opinions. He concluded by commenting on the extreme importance of the water issue facing Fannin County, noted his belief that if we all work together the issues will all work out (though not in one day), before congratulating and welcoming Judge Cunningham and Commissioner Kopf and thanking all for their attendance.

Commissioner Kopf asked for patience as he learns his new job, recognized there are many things needing to be accomplished, thanked everyone for coming, and noted his appreciation for and the

importance of their input. Judge Cunningham thanked Shonda Magness and Alicia Whipple for their work. He then spoke on the weather event that occurred the day before where a possible tornadic outbreak had been forecasted for our area and how he was at the emergency operation center where they were about to issue warnings for people to take cover. But God seemed to bless Fannin County as the storm headed north of the Red River and the warnings became unnecessary. He noted though that Troy Hudson and the impressive ham radio operators were ready to spring into action and be the emergency back-up to reduce the problems that might have occurred should the storms had headed our way. Concluding with the observation that though we may not always be able to stop the problems, we can reduce the problems and that is what we will strive for. He then thanked everyone and asked for a motion of adjournment.

16. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 10:25 a.m.

If everyone truly understood and believed what the Bible says of “salvation” AND “damnation” then everyone would have a great desire for salvation. The Lord said, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Mark 2:17). By inspiration, Paul concluded that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We all need the Physician. We have all sinned. When the Jews on the day of Pentecost realized that they had sinned. They had “taken and by wicked hands have

crucified and slain” Jesus (Acts 2:23). When they understood that Jesus was “both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36), they desired salvation. “Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). The answer that they received was not “except Jesus as your personal Savior and pray the sinner’s prayer”. “Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).

See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” (Acts 8:36). Philip didn’t say that baptism is not necessary for salvation, but “If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest.” (Acts 8:37). Philip baptized the man of Ethiopea.

Hello everyone! We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning!

As I look back on 2022, I’m very thankful for God’s blessings on our church family, as well as my family. The Bible tells us in 2 Samuel 22:50, “Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.” He alone is worthy of our praise. I look forward to what He has in store for us this year.

CALVARY UNITED PENTECOSTAL CHURCH

When: Sun. 10:30am. Wed. 7:00pm Where: 1190 Hwy 56 W. Bonham.

Pastor: Steven Luton, 903-583-4346

When the treasurer of Candace, queen of the Ethiopeans, heard Philip preach Jesus, he desired salvation. He “said,

When Saul of Tarsus journeyed to Damascus to persecute the church, Jesus spoke to him. Saul was told that he was persecuting Jesus and asked “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6). Saul desired salvation. In Damascus Ananias didn’t tell Saul that he wasn’t worth saving, but he told Saul “arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).

As I’ve said before, one of my favorite hymn writers is Fanny Crosby. We sing a great deal of her hymns in our church, including, ”He Hideth My Soul,” “I Am Thine, O Lord,” and ”To God, Be the Glory.” Here is the first one that came to my mind for this week.

“Praise Him, praise Him!

Jesus, our blessed redeemer! Sing, O earth, His wonderful love proclaim!

Hail Him, hail Him! Highest archangels in glory!

Strength and honor give to His holy name!

Like a shepherd, Jesus will guard His children.

In His arms He carries them all day long.

Praise Him! Praise Him! tell of His excellent greatness.

Praise Him! Praise Him! ever in joyful song.”

If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day!

How To Choose the Best Weight Loss Plan for Your 2023 Goals

(StatePoint) It’s that time of year again when many Americans make the resolution to lose weight and start a healthier routine. This year in particular, with the pandemic largely behind us, many Americans will once again focus on their health.

In fact, 64% of Americans are motivated to lose weight because they know it has an impact on their immunity, according to a recent poll of 2,000 U.S. adults aged 30 and above. And 61% also now realize that a healthy diet and lifestyle can better protect their long-term health.

So what should you look for when it comes to a weight loss plan? Courtney McCormick, MPH, RDN, LDN, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem, offers these tips to help you choose a program that’s right for you.

Keep it Simple: Let’s face it, in our crazy busy world, we have to make hundreds of decisions a day, often at lightning speed. You shouldn’t have to worry about counting points or measuring foods.

Look for a plan that’s easy and convenient, and does the work for you.

Focus on Protein: Protein is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and a key to weight loss. Protein helps with satiety, so it’s important to include some in each meal and snack. Look for plans with high-protein options, like Nutrisystem’s new premium meals, which include up to 30 grams in each meal and keep you full for up to five hours.

Look for Value: As prices continue to rise at grocery stores nationwide, many people are struggling to find affordable options that can help them eat healthier and lose weight. However, those options do exist. Look for plans that are cost-effective and deliver the majority of meals right to your door.

Don’t Give Up Your Favorite Meals: Look for a plan that lets you eat your favorite foods. Losing weight doesn’t have to mean giving up the things you love. Weight loss plans like Nutrisystem offer

comfort foods made healthier that are perfectly portioned so you can enjoy them without any guilt. Plus, the plan also offers dessert for those who have a sweet tooth.

Seek Support: Achieving the goals you’ve set for yourself is so much easier when you have a support system. The best people to have on your team when you’re trying to lose excess weight are those who sit down at daily meals with you. Even better, your chances of reaching and maintaining your weight loss goal increase dramatically if another person in your household joins you on the journey. Look for plans that offer options for both you and your partner to get healthier together.

For more great information and other ideas to help fuel your success this year, visit leaf.nutrisystem.com.

Remember, your weight loss goals will be more than achievable this year if you follow the right plan for you. Look for a program designed to help you succeed.

(StatePoint) The New Year represents a fresh start and is the perfect time to invest in your health. However, you may be unsure what resolutions will have the biggest impact. Doctors say that the easy, tangible actions you take are some of the most important.

“Many people kick off the start of each new year with big-picture health resolutions,” says Jack Resneck, Jr., M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “The good news is that small, positive health choices made right now can have long-lasting effects.”

Want to get started today? Here are the 10 resolutions the AMA recommends top your list this year:

1. Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health, so get moving today. A good rule of thumb for adults is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

2. Vaccination is the best protection against a number of serious illnesses. To protect yourself and your family, get up to date on your vaccines, including the annual flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. Your doctor can let you know if you’re due for a COVID booster. If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers. org.

3. Get screened. Estimates based on statistical models show that since April 2020, millions of screenings for breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer diagnoses may have been missed due to pandemic-related care disruptions. Check in with your physician. If you’re due for preventive care, tests or screenings, make an appointment. These mea-

sures are designed to keep you healthy and help your doctor spot certain conditions before they become more serious.

4. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke, and it affects millions of Americans. Visit ManageYourBP.org to understand what your blood pressure numbers mean and what you can do to get your blood pressure under control.

5. One in 3 American adults has prediabetes, a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged. However, there are steps you can take that can help delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk by taking a simple 2-minute selfscreening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. This resource also features helpful lifestyle tips that can help you reverse prediabetes.

6. Whenever possible, drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages and replace processed foods -- especially those with added sodium and sugar -- with nutritious, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, herbs and spices.

7. If consuming alcohol, drink only in moderation. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines that as up to one drink per day for wom-

en and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

8. Speak with your doctor or health care professional about quitting tobacco and nicotine use. Declare your home and car smokefree to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.

9. Follow your doctor’s instructions when taking prescription drugs – especially opioids. Always store and dispose of these medications safely to prevent misuse. Whenever prescribed antibiotics, take them exactly as directed. Not taking the full course can lead to antibiotic resistance, a serious public health problem, and will not make you feel better if you have a virus, such as a cold or flu.

10. Invest in your mental health by managing stress, getting sufficient sleep, exercising and seeking help from a mental health professional when you need it.

If you don’t have health insurance, the AMA encourages you to sign up for coverage at healthcare.gov, which has new, affordable options. The enrollment deadline for 2023 coverage is Jan. 15, 2023. Find more health resources at ama-assn.org. For a healthy 2023 and beyond, invest in your wellness with these doctor-recommended New Year’s resolutions.

Equine Veterinary Practice

Due to the financial and especially the no afterhours emergency call advantages of small animal practice, there has been a tremendous decrease in veterinarians in equine practice.

The AAEP president is reporting that only 1.3% of equine graduates enter equine practice directly, 4.5% enter internship and during the first five years, 50% leave the profession. Because of this, over a year ago, Dr Hayes became a solo vet practice. Owners are now being asked to bring their horses

to the clinic for treatment and our mobile service coverage area has been limited. Without spending time on the road, Dr Hayes can see many more horses in a day. Even with a full schedule, she continues to provide afterhours emergency care, in and outside the clinic.

Your Emergency Scheduled appointments are delayed/re-arranged to see your daytime emergency at the clinic. Often there are times when Dr Hayes has a full schedule of appointments at the clinic and is unable to travel to your emergency. We

do have contacts that will haul your horse if needed, but your horse must be willing to load. Emergencies should be brought into the clinic unless the horse is down. An emergency farm call may be possible during or after hours, depending on your location.

It is our policy if she is unable to see your horse to provide alternate emergency contact information. However, very few of the veterinarians on our list offer mobile emergency service. This can be a real problem for those that do not have access to a trailer or that have a sick horse that won’t load. We are asking you to please have a plan for emergency transportation. Being prepared for emergen-

cies will help lessen your stress and provides a way for your horse to be seen and treated.

If Roses Grow In Heaven

If roses grow in Heaven Lord Please pick a bunch for me. Place them in my Granny’s arms And tell her they’re from me.

Tell her that I love and miss her And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek And hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day. But there is an ache within my heart That will never go away.

Love, Bo and Dra

There is such great comfort in the assurance that we are not alone durning our time of loss.

Because you care, you came to share beautiful flowers and words of prayer. Your calls, visits and words of comfort are greatly appreciated. May the blessings of the Lord be upon each of you. The love and thoughtfulness you’ve shown will never be forgotten. Thank you for your kindness.
