Ronnie12/10/19 Ball for Commissioner 12/31/19 Precinct One

I was born and raised in Fannin County. My wife Becky and I have four daughters, seven grandchildren, and three great sonsin-law. Our older daughters attended Bonham schools and our adopted daughter, Hope, and our grandkids attend or have attended Ector school. We have a great affection for the people of Fannin County, and I am sincere in my desire to serve Fannin County as commissioner for Precinct One. My wife and family are fully supportive of me in this endeavor. I was blessed with a career of over thirty years with GTE and Verizon, and prior to that twelve years with General Cable in Bonham.

Family Violence Affects the Children PLEASE...if you need help dealing with personal problems or you need help coping with your children, seek help!

I cut short my work at Verizon in 2016 due to the sale of Verizon and its possible impact on retirement benefits. With a desire to continue working, plus my love, concern, and hope for this county, serving as a commissioner seems a perfect fit for me. In the months since I decided to run for this position, I have learned of many of the challenges that our county faces. Change and growth are always trying, and there are always growing pains A primary goal for me will be to promote unity and cooperation in the county. We all are blessed to be citizens of Fannin County and I hope that we can face the challenges of growth and change with a grace and goodwill that would please Mr. Sam Rayburn, himself, and honor his legacy. When most think of a County Commissioner’s job, they think roads and bridges. Road and bridge maintenance is a vital part of the job and one I plan to work dutifully to improve upon. I realize that well

and unbiased decisions for the good of all the people in the county. It is crucial that we work together for a balanced budget. As change and growth is inevitable, we need to set the stage for the type of growth that will be best for our county. Continually looking for ways to more effectively, efficiently, and responsibly use the money and resources from our tax base is of the utmost importance. I am honored to have the opportunity to run in the Republican Primary for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One, a place I’ve called home for over 50 years. Early voting begins February 18 and the Primary election is March 3. With sincere and humble appreciation, I ask for your vote.

maintained roads are a very valid concern for many Precinct One residents. I know that money is tight and higher taxes are not wanted. I will be exploring any and all options to improve our county roads. I will be a partner and a leader with the road crew in that effort. I will see that no county roads are overlooked or underserved. I also fully understand that an extremely important responsibility of a commissioner’s job is to cooperatively work with the County Judge and commissioners to adopt, and oversee the county budget. This is a vital role for County Commissioners, and one I take very seriously. I will gather all information possible and do my best to make informed

Building Spiritual Strength

By Bro. Bill Beasley 1Timothy 4:8 (NLT) As we begin our travels through the New Year, I can think of no better way to be prepared than to make spiritual exercise a daily habit. In fact, Paul writes in his first let-

Micky Shepherd

Candidate for Fannin County Commissioner, Precinct 3

I have worked for the county most of my adult life, through the Sheriff’s Dept., and Precinct 3. I have also worked for TDCJID for a period of time. I would like to see changes in this county. Changes that would help the people of Fannin County. I believe with a positive attitude, and willing to communicate with all the peo-

ple, we can do so much better. I would like to see our roads upgraded to agrisealed roads instead of rock. The initial cost is more, but lasts 20 years plus if done right. I won’t make any promises, but I will do my best for Fannin County. The county has a lot of big changes taking place. I would like to be a part of those changes. Some projects have already started, and they need to be finished, and we need to move forward with the progress. I would appreciate your support and your vote. Remember we all work for you, the citizens of Fannin County. Thank You Micky Shepherd - Republican 903-227-5437

rifice, submission to God’s will and witnessing. When we allow the Holy Spirit to use these and others we build up in Spiritual Strength. There are many tools available to help us grow spiritually. All of them are indispensable. Let me suggest that we begin by renewing our commitment to Bible reading and to Bible study. I am thinking, in closing of this week’s column, of two passages of scripture that I would like for you to read. Both are among my favorites - Psalms chapter 1 and 2 Timothy 2:15. We will look together in the next column “The Book for the Year.”

Bonham Land and Ranches Real Estate Company Under New Ownership

January 6, 2020 - Press Release - Bonham, Texas - Fifteen years after its founding, Bonham Land & Ranches Real Estate Company is under new ownership. “We are excited to take what Ron Lester has built and continue his legacy of professionalism and customer service,” says Teresa Mills, managing broker and one of three principles in the ownership group. “Bonham Land & Ranches has always stood on the tenets of integrity and community and we’ll continue those traditions in earnest.” Before becoming managing broker Mills is a longtime agent for Bonham Land & Ranches and a former educator in Bonham and Dodd City schools and lifelong resident of Fannin County. Mills explains, however, that even though ownership is changing hands, Ron Lester will still be involved heavily in the business.

“Ron will still be serving our loyal customers,” she explains. “He’s our top agent and a valuable asset to the company.” Through the transition, Bonham Land & Ranches is also ramping up its Rural Realty Group brand. Rural Realty Group was formed as a division of Bonham Land & Ranches in 2017 to serve parts of northwest Texas. Now, however, the brand’s footprint will grow over much more of the state. “We currently have ten active agents,” says Mills. “Under the Rural Realty Group brand, we’ll be able to strategically place new agents throughout other parts of Texas and provide new markets with the same great service consumers in Bonham and Fannin County have come to appreciate.” Aside from Mills, the other two principal owners are Jimmy Page and Russell Graves. Page is the owner of North

Texas Auctions and Real Estate and a lifelong resident of Fannin County. Russell Graves is a professional photographer and filmmaker and former agriculture science teacher who grew up in Dodd City but lived for the past 25 years in Childress, Texas until recently moved back to Fannin County. “With the new ownership group, our ability to bring creative sales solutions and access vast pools of buyers in unprecedented,” says Mills. Me, Jimmy, and Russell each bring unique strengths to this business that you typically won’t find among real estate professionals. LETTER OF ENDORSEMENT FOR SHERIFF MARK JOHNSON My name is Ashley Reynolds. On April 15, 2017 I received the worst news anyone could receive. My baby sister had committed suicide. I was in jail so this made it even harder. I just knew I wasn’t going to be able to say my goodbyes to her. Well, I didn’t know that my family had already contacted the Sheriff. I found out that I was going to be able to go to her family visitation and funeral. On April 19th I was moved to the main jail. I was looking out a little hole in the window and saw a man holding a bag and said “these clothes are for Ashley Reynolds”. A few minutes went by and I got dressed and met the man who would become more of a father to me than my own. As I walked out of the cell, he introduced himself to me and asked if I was going to be any trouble. I said “no sir” and we headed to his car. He told me that his wife was in the car and would be going with us. This man and his wife treated me like a person and not some criminal. They took me to Oklahoma to say my goodbyes. He let me walk free among my family. The conversation that Mark, Kathy and I had that day opened my eyes to things. They took me to dinner before I returned to jail. We returned to Oklahoma the following day for the funeral and I know that no one else would have done that for me. Mark Johnson is my hero and he let me say goodbye to my sister. If I had not been able to do that, I know that my parents would have had to plan another funeral for another child. I have been out of jail since April 28, 2017. I have been clean and sober for 3 years. I have my children back and a new life. Since that time, I have kept in contact with Mark and Kathy. We have had dinner together and they even bought me Christmas presents. My kids are now close to them and call them PaPaw and Grandma. The thing is that Mark can see the good in people and not their past. He is a man of his word and has made Fannin County better than it has ever been. With that being said I’m proud to call this man my second father. God put Mark and Kathy in my life for a reason. I never imagined we would be this close when I met him on the worst day of my life. I wish a lot more of Fannin County had his heart. Ashley Reynolds Fannin County Resident Political ad paid for by Mark Johnson Re-election Campaign, Katherine Johnson, Treasurer

Elect Dale

McQueen 1/7/19

For Commissioner, Fannin County Precinct 1 On March 3, 2020, the citizens of Precinct 1 can elect a new Republican county commissioner for Fannin County. I ask for your vote to be that commissioner based on what goals I would like to see happen in the county, my proven track record of improving and growing two important entities in the county, and my ability to work with others across the county. This week I would like to address the first platform of my campaign: A Balanced Budget for the County. Just as your household operates, the county should not plan to spend more than they bring in each year. Our county budget for the general fund (the fund that pays 80% of the county bills) has been spending more than it takes in for the past three years and it is getting worse. In fact, over the past six years it has only made more than it spent twice. In 2019 we spent almost $600,000 more than we took in and for 2020 we are on track to spend over $1,000,000 more than we take in. A balanced budget means that we don’t spend more than we take in and we DO NOT Spend our reserves just to pay our normal bills. Our reserve fund should only be spent for true emergencies or for items that will be of a benefit to the county down the road. In order to get to a balanced budget, we must make the decision that what money we expect to collect each year is all we can spend that year. Just like your household, you do your best to not plan on spending more than you expect to make. To stay in that budget, we need to look at better ways to deliver a service or if that service is even something we should be doing. The county needs a new building to house everyone that could not return to the courthouse once it is completed. This would have been a great place to spend some our reserve money if we had not depleted the account by millions of dollars over the past few years just paying normal bills. We still need a building and in order to get one without driving the tax rate up to the point that it deters people from moving to Fannin County, the commissioners court will have to seriously look at getting our income and spending in line. As I commissioner, I am willing to do the hard work needing to be done to balance our budget and at the same time make actual plans for Fannin Counties long term growth. I ask for your vote on March 3, 2020 or early vote starting February 18th. Thank you, Dale McQueen Paid for by Dale McQueen, Commissioner for Precinct 1, Dale McQueen - Treasurer

Texas area. The longest average waiting times were Carrollton: 2 hours, 2 minutes; Plano: 2 hours, 11 minutes; Garland: 2 hours, 11 minutes; Fort Worth: 2 hours, 12 minutes. Shortest Average Wait: Waxahachie: 1 hour, 5 minutes, McKinney: 1 hour, 1 minute, and Lewisville: 57 minutes. But for Fannin County residents, there is light at the end of the dark DMV tunnel. The fastest DMV office in the state is Paris, Texas. That’s right! Fannin County residents have only a 20-30 minute drive to the fastest DMV office in Texas! I have verified with several people who visited the Paris office, that there was very little wait time and their visit to the DMV office was somewhat enjoyable and FAST! Now go and

The dreaded time has come. Your driver’s license is about to expire or worst yet, it has already expired and now you have no choice but to go to the Texas DMV License office to get it renewed. Waiting in the DMV line is as slow as molasses on a cold winter’s day. It

The Texas Legislature added about $200 million in 2019 to the DPS budget for its driver’s license offices, for a total of about $500 million in the driver licensing budget. Once the added funding went into effect, the DPS planned to fill hundreds of new positions to shorten the wait times at the busiest offices. The extra funding was set to go into effect Sept. 1, 2019. While it’s not clear how, or if, the state will improve wait times, anything would be better than nothing. Here is some data released mid 2019 of waiting times at the DMV offices in the North

With the rapid growth of the North Texas area, the closing of the Greenville office and the shortage of employees, lines at North Texas DMV offices are long and slow. Even our small country town of Bonham has not been spared this inconvenience. Many people from the DFW and Greenville areas are coming to Bonham in hopes of a quick and easy, in and out type of visit to the DMV, but that is by far from what is happening. Inside the Bonham DMV office, all available seating areas are full and a long line of people waiting out the door and down the sidewalk. Lines are beginning to form at 8am each day and continue into the afternoon. The occasional fast food wrapper along with drink cups and bottles are strewn in

served as Chairman from 2017-2019. Mr. Fernandes will remain on the Board as a director. Rhonda Cunningham said: “Gary Fernandes led the Hall-Voyer Foundation as the Board launched the Capital Campaign to renovate the Library buildings. The work on

this project is almost complete and a Renovation Celebration will be held on Sunday, March 29. The Foundation, the Library and the citizens of Honey Grove appreciate so much the leadership he showed during this amazing time.” In the fall of last year the Honey Grove Library and Learning Center was a finalist for Library Journal’s annual award for Best Small Library in America for 2019. The 2019 recognition came from the remarkable Capital Campaign which provided funds for the repair and renovation of our Library facilities. Rhonda Cunningham has served on the Hall-Voyer Board since 2016. She was involved in the Capital Campaign and has overseen the renovation of the Library buildings. She will serve during the time that programs are developed to fully utilize the newly remodeled spaces.

On paper, this season looks like the last few for Class 1A second-ranked Dodd City’s Lady Hornets. Most opponents have again been dominated en route to wins. The losses have again been few (4) and only against ranked and/or larger schools -- one of whom, Argyle, this season is coming off a fifth-consecutive 4A championship. However, this ‘replica’ has occurred sans the scoring of an all-state senior for the last month. Delaney Pilliod suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury on Dec. 5. “We can’t change the cards we are dealt,” said Dodd City head coach Alex Stephenson on Jan. 8. “just how we play the game. “Next man up mentality is what we preach,” said Stephenson. “The kids have all adjusted and have stepped up in big ways, playing new roles.” Their efforts have equated already reaching 20 wins and a 4-0 start through Jan. 8 in District 23-1A girls basketball -- in search of an eighthconsecutive undefeated district title and 10th-straight postseason.

Junior Nick Rhinehart garnered two first-team selections to lead Bonham on the AllDistrict 5-3A-I football team for 2019. Rhinehart received the notoriety at wide receiver and kicker for the Purple Warriors who finished winless in district play and 1-9 overall. Other first-team selections for Bonham included: Jacob Kennedy, senior, center; Aiden Straub, senior, inside

linebacker; Luke Porter, senior, inside linebacker; and Marco Delgado, sophomore, cornerback. Second-team recipients were junior Brant Stuber as an outside linebacker and Kennedy as a defensive lineman for Bonham, which will learn its new district alignment for the 2020 and 2021 seasons on the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment day on Feb. 3.

By Rich Hilliard Junior guard Lindsay Carter scored a season-high 17 points in 16 minutes off the bench, as Austin College’s women’s basketball team improved to 11-0 on Jan. 4. Carter finished 6-of-8 from the field -- including 3-of-4 on 3-pointers -- and hit both free throws, as the Kangaroos won at Johnson & Wales University at Denver, 88-57, to also improve to 4-0 in Southern Colle-

giate Athletic Conference play. A former Dodd City basketball, volleyball and softball standout, she also ranked second amongst Austin College’s scorers during the game. Carter, a 2017 Dodd City alumna, transfered to AC for this season after playing her first two collegiate basketball campaigns for Concordia University in Austin.

Museum Object of the Week Fannin County Museum of History

By Malinda Allison The Fannin County Museum of History has a number of

old radios and music players. Most young people visiting the Museum have never seen these types of devices which brought so much pleasure and culture to previous generations. One such device is the tabletop Edison Amberola 30, which was produced from 1915 through 1929 and had a small internal horn to amplify the sound. This model was a sales leader and sold 18,000 units in one six-month period in 1916. This device played 4 minutes of music or the spoken word on blue celluloid cylin-

ders. Of course in time the use of wax cylinders gave way to phonographic records. The various music devices at the Museum show visitors innovations in the early 20th century that continue until today. Visit the Museum to see these interesting devices. The Fannin County Museum of History is located a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square in Bonham in the old Texas & Pacific Train Depot. The Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 4 pm.
