Getting Ahead Fannin County Honors Fall 2022 Graduates
Press Release - As we ring in the New Year, there are eleven more Fannin County residents poised to move from just getting by to getting ahead. On Sunday December 11 Getting Ahead Fannin County celebrated the graduation of their fall 2022 class. Eleven participants, known as investigators, completed an eye-opening 16 week workshop for people who lack resources and were recognized for their accomplishments during the ceremony. They joined thirty-seven others who have completed the program since 2019.
The 2022 fall graduates began their work in August with Patty Kreider facilitating their study “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting’ By World”, assisted by co-facilitator Sonya Elmore. The investigators took an in-depth look at themselves and the impact of poverty in their own lives and after a period of self-reflection, they investigated poverty in our community. The session ended with each investigator creating
a personal plan, based on his or her goals and dreams, to build a better future.
Kristen Pless, Getting Ahead graduate, was the guest speaker for the graduation ceremony. Pless shared how contacts she made during the Getting Ahead Community Assessment night led to her finding just the right job. Applying skills learned during her spring 2022 Getting Ahead session, she was able to negotiate a good deal on a vehicle, and her family is in the process of acquiring a larger home. Pless encouraged the graduates to apply the concepts they have learned to make a better life for themselves and their families.
Deborah Spindle, graduate from the spring 2022 class, offered words of advice as she
passed the torch to the new graduates:
• Know who you are
• Make a choice to see the world differently
• Do not stop
Spindle shared how her Getting Ahead journey empowered her to start a new career
in real estate. Spindle’s family has also been able to purchase a home.
Kreider and Elmore awarded each graduate a certificate and a yellow rose.
District Judge Laurie Blake was on hand to offer words of congratulations and encour-
agement to the graduates. Blake presented each investigator with an engraved bois d’arc pen custom-made by David Keene.
Graduate Dusty Mangrum said, “This class taught me so much about myself and showed me I could do things I never knew were possible.”
“Getting Ahead has opened my eyes in so many ways and helped me personally and professionally. Thank you!” shared Graduate Kristi Mueller.
Graduate Jayson White expressed gratitude for his Getting Ahead experience and how it has benefited him as a recovering addict.
A reception followed the graduation ceremony.
The Getting Ahead program is for people who are living in poverty or unstable situations.
It’s about building economic stability for themselves and
a better future for their communities. The idea of “getting ahead” means action and movement – getting ahead of where they are now, toward a future that they really want.
The program is sponsored by District Attorney Richard Glaser, the Fannin County Ministerial Alliance and Texoma Regional Foundation. The Getting Ahead Steering Committee is very grateful for the support provided by local businesses and churches.
Special thanks go to the Bois d’Arc Creek Cowboy Church for use of their facility for the graduation ceremony, and to Louise Goodwater for the beautiful cake she provided for the reception.
Are you tired of just getting by and are you looking for a way to change your life in 2023? 5. Public Forum: A speaker who is a local amateur radio operator spoke of a need existing for the county to re-evaluate the county’s communication system and its policies. He also spoke of the need for expeditiousness in the building of the Justice Center and voiced his belief that a tornado shelter ought to be built into it that could accommodate people needing safe shelter from tornadic activity.
6. Discussion, consideration and action to accept excess proceeds totaling $26,886.76 from delinquent tax foreclosures – County Judge for Richard Brand of Linebarger Attorneys LLP: Attorney Richard Brandt noted how some of today’s proceeds came from delinquencies pre-dating from the time he became the attorney for Fannin County before presenting the check to Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple. 9. Discussion and report regarding Indigent Healthcare activity for the 1st quarter of FY2023 – County Judge for Indigent Healthcare Director: Fannin County Indigent Healthcare Director Mark DeMay began his report by acknowledging his appreciation for the new members of the court and noted his report was for the period of Oct 2022 thru December 2022 which is the first quarter of the Fiscal Year of 2023. He noted 517 total inbound/outbound calls had occurred with 65 in-office appointments. There were 28 applications for care with 6 being approved, 5 pending and 17 referred to other programs. Patient activity included 7 coming off the program with 2 of those returning to work, 3 approved for disability, 1 relocating out of county and 1 removed for non-compliance. With the addition of 6 new patients, there is currently a total of 19 patients on the program. Mr. DeMay explained what is involved with the process of people coming off the program (assisting them with the disability application process and getting them the care needed to enable them to get back to work.) He noted that the previous average for a patient to be on indigent care had been 2 to 6 years but under his supervision that average has been reduced to 4 to 10 months. After detailing the number of claims processed, he stated a total of $39,196 was paid out of the quarterly budget that put his department $12,179 under budget for this quarter. After his report, Judge Cunningham asked him to forward activity reports from the start of his tenure to current date and questioned how much control the county has over the inmates’ medical treatment before noting his appreciation for Mr. DeMay.

17. Discussion regarding water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Fannin County citizen Mark Hetherington spoke to ask “why does the county not have adequate legal or legislative policies in place to protect the citizens against the loss of revenue, taxes and access to any known water in the county?” He then spoke on the previous discussions he had on this issue and asked if there were any protections that could be put in place to protect the county. Judge Cunningham noted his agreement with the speaker and expounded on the importance of water. Mr Hetherington further noted his belief that the county needs their own water source and requested something be put in place soon on this matter.
Commissioner Kopf shared his thoughts on possible first steps including an engineering study being conducted. A discussion ensued with Judge Cunningham noting information about the impending problems with the area’s ground water that he received from the President of Bois d’Arc MUD’s Board of Directors (Municipal Utility District.) He discussed thoughts about possible grant money (noting the need to be cautious when applying for grants) and other ideas before thanking the speaker for his comments.
18. Discussion regarding Fannin County road issues – County Judge: Mr. Hetherington spoke again on the water issue to suggest the county purchase land that could provide the materials needed for road work as well as suggesting the county limit its responsibility primarily to the main roads, requiring more
responsibility from land owners benefiting from the smaller county roads leading up their private driveways. Ms. Poslner who had spoken at last week’s Commissioners Court, questioned when and how the $500,000 would be allocated by each of the precincts for road work. She noted her hopes that the Commissioners would share with the citizens how the monies will be spent and commented on the possibility of a bond election, legislative assistance (monies for infrastructure) and other ideas relating to the funding for road issues.

Press Release - January 17, 2023: New and updated property tax information has just been compiled by Fannin Central Appraisal District and is available now to assist taxpayers. This property tax information is current and covers a wide range of topics, such as taxpayer remedies, exemptions and appraisals, and has information for select groups, such as disabled veterans and persons age 65 or older. This includes information about the
following programs.
• Property Tax Exemptions for Disabled Veterans - The law provides partial exemptions for any property owned by disabled veterans or surviving spouses and surviving children of deceased disabled veterans. Another partial exemption is for homesteads donated to disabled veterans by charitable organizations at no cost or not more than 50 percent of the good faith estimate of the homestead’s market value to the
disabled veterans and their surviving spouses. The exemption amount is determined according to percentage of service-connected disability. The law also provides a 100 percent homestead exemption for 100 percent disabled veterans and their surviving spouses and surviving spouses of U.S. armed service members killed in action.
• Property Tax Exemptions –Non-profit organizations that meet statutory requirements may seek property tax exemptions and must apply to their county appraisal district by a specific date. Businesses that receive tax abatements granted by taxing units; ship inventory out of Texas that may be eligible for the freeport exemption; store certain goods in transit in warehouses that are moved within 175 days; construct, install or acquire pollution control property; own and operate energy storage systems; convert landfill-generated gas; or store offshore drilling equipment while not in use may also be eligible for statutory exemptions.
• Rendering Taxable Property - If a business owns tangible personal property that is used to produce income, the business must file a rendition with its local county appraisal district by a specified date. Personal property includes inventory and equipment used by a business. Owners do not have to render exempt property such as church property or an agriculture producer’s equipment used for farming.
• Appraisal Notices – Normally, taxpayers receive a notice of appraised value from the appropriate local county appraisal district. The city, county, school districts and other local taxing units will use the appraisal district’s value
to set property taxes for the coming year.
• Property Taxpayer Remedies – This Comptroller publication explains in detail how to protest a property appraisal, what issues the county appraisal review board (ARB) can consider and what to expect during a protest hearing. The publication also discusses the options of taking a taxpayer’s case to district court, the State Office of Administrative Hearings or binding arbitration if the taxpayer is dissatisfied with the outcome of the ARB hearing.
• Homestead Exemptions – A homestead is generally defined as the home and land used as the owner’s principal residence on Jan. 1 of the tax year. An individual acquiring property before Jan. 1, may qualify for a prorated exemption. A homestead exemption reduces the appraised value of the home and, as a result, lowers property taxes. Applications are submitted to the appropriate local county appraisal district.
• Productivity Appraisal – Property owners who use land for timberland production, agricultural purposes or wildlife management can be granted property tax relief on their land. They may apply to their local county appraisal district for an agricultural appraisal which may result in a lower appraisal of the land based on production, versus market value.
• Residence Homestead Tax Deferral - Texas homeowners may postpone paying the currently delinquent property taxes due on the appreciating value of their homes by filing a tax deferral affidavit at their local county appraisal district. This tax relief allows homeowners to pay the property taxes on 105 percent of the preceding year’s appraised
value of their homestead, plus the taxes on any new improvements to the homestead. The remaining taxes are postponed, but not cancelled, with interest accruing at 8 percent per year.
• Property Tax Deferral for Persons Age 65 or Older or Disabled or Disabled Veteran Homeowners – Texans who are age 65 or older or disabled, as defined by law, or who qualify for a disabled veteran exemption may postpone paying current and delinquent property taxes on their homes by signing a tax deferral affidavit.
Once the affidavit is on file, taxes are deferred, but not cancelled, as long as the owner continues to own and live in the home. Interest continues to accrue at 5 percent per year on the unpaid taxes. You may obtain a deferral affidavit at the appraisal district.
• Notice of Availability of Electronic Communication – two tax code provisions exist regarding electronic communications.
First, is Tax Code Section 1.085 which applies to appraisal districts located in counties with a population of more than 200,000 or that have authorized electronic communications, and that have implemented a system that allows such communications, chief appraisers and ARBs may communicate electronically through email or other media with property owners or their designated representatives. Written agreements are required for notices and other documents to be delivered electronically instead of mailing. Electronic communication for the purpose of delivering notices, applications, and other documents is authorized only if the Chief Appraiser and property owner or designated representative agree under that law to communication in an electronic format. At this time, the Fannin Central Appraisal District has opted not to use electronic com-
Commissioners
munication for the purpose of receiving or delivering any notice, application, or other documents required or permitted by the Property Tax Code under Section 1.085.
Second, is Tax Code Section 1.086 that went into effect January 1, 2020 and applies only to owners of residential property that occupy the property as their principal residence. This is not available to any other type of property i.e. agricultural, commercial, industrial, business personal property etc. Owners may request electronic delivery of notices (delivery by email) rather than the postal service.
The Request for Electronic Delivery form can be found on our website @ www.fannincad.org. Once requested and verified, the appraisal district will no longer mail notices to owners that request delivery of notices under this section. Other provisions apply. Please see our website for details.
For the purposes of Section 1.085, this shall serve as notification that the Fannin Central Appraisal District shall rely on any method of delivery authorized by the Property Tax Code for any notice, application, rendition, or any other document required or permitted by the Property Tax Code except for delivery by electronic format.
• Protesting Property Appraisal Values – Property owners who disagree with the appraisal district’s appraisal of their property for local taxes or for any other action that adversely affects them may protest their property value to the appraisal district’s ARB. For more information about these programs, contact Fannin Central Appraisal District at 903583-8701 or online at www.fannincad.org. Information is also available on the Comptroller’s Property Tax Assistance Division’s website at comptroller. texas.gov/taxes/property-tax/.

Commissioner Self wished the Judge and Commissioner Kopf safe travels, thanked all for their attendance and noted his crew would also be working on the roads. Commissioner Magness commented on the weather before stating his hope that the public will understand their efforts to provide security for the employees at the courthouse and noted that everyone needs to know that there will be one unlocked entrance into the courthouse (entrance facing Sam Rayburn Drive.) He wished safe travels for Judge Cunningham and Commissioner Kopf to the conference and commented on how he has enjoyed attending those meetings before thanking everyone for coming out. Commissioner Kopf noted his appreciation for everyone’s patience with him and everyone’s attendance to court. Judge Cunningham noted he too has his training wheels on and is looking forward to attending the conference to learn (as quickly as possible) more about what he needs to be doing to address issues affecting the county. He stated his belief in open government and participation by the citizens and is glad for all the comments. Continued

The Strait and Wide Gates
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Jesus said “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:12). The Lord is talking about the difference between ‘destruction’ and ‘life’.
Jesus encourages all to the strait gate by saying “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:9). John states “this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son” (1 John 5:11). Paul wrote that “as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians
3:27).
Jesus also warns about the broad way by saying, “whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:33).
And that “whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” (Mark 8:38). Peter warned about “false prophets also among the people” “even denying the Lord that bought them” (2 Peter 2:1). Paul explains that there are those who “profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate” (Titus 1:16).
The Lord promotes the narrow way by showing us
Backsliding Christians
Message by Wil Pounds
Wil is a graduate of William Carey University, B. A.; New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Th. M.; and Azusa Pacific University, M. A. He has pastored in Panama, Ecuador and the U. S, and served for over 20 years as missionary in Ecuador and Honduras. He had a daily expository Bible teaching ministry head in over 100 countries from 19722005. He currently serves as a Baptist pastor and teaches seminary extension courses in Ecuador.
Have you ever temporarily lapsed into unbelief and sin after you became a Christian? The condition of backsliding results from spiritual apathy or disregard for the truth of God’s Word. It results in a departure from a winsome confession of faith and Biblical ethical standards. Actions are affected by our attitudes toward God and His Word.
Jesus said, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).
Backsliding is different from
CALVARY UNITED PENTECOSTAL CHURCH
apostasy, which spurns the grace of God by renouncing the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross (Heb. 6:46; 10:26-31). When a person renounces his faith in Christ that person was never a true child of God, and never was among the elect of God (John 3:18-21, 36; 5:24-29).
On the other hand, the elect individual, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and redeemed by God has been delivered once-for-all from the bondage of sin. Backsliding is not a “fall from grace” in the sense that a Christian once saved by grace can lose his eternal life in Christ. He is God’s child forever, and He has placed His life in the believing sinner.
There were times when the disciples of Jesus withdrew from fellowship with the Lord (Matt. 26:56), Peter denied Christ (26:69-75), Corinthian believers lived in sin (2 Cor. 12:20-21), the Church in Asia became lukewarm (Rev. 2:4, 14-15, 20), etc.
its result. Jesus shows us the way to the Father in saying, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Zacharias said of Jesus, he would “guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79).
Christ informs us of the broad way in that it is “the way, that leadeth to destruction” (Matthew 7:13). Paul writes of judgment of God, “Who will render to every man according to his deeds” (Romans 2:6).
Paul goes on to let us know what is waiting for those “that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness,” the result is “indignation and wrath” from God (Romans 2:8).
God warns us not to “leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness” (Proverbs 2:13), but “ever follow that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:15).
tain spiritual growth and effectively minister in His name.
Unbelief (Heb. 3:12), bitterness (12:15), love for the world (2 Tim. 4:10), love for money (1 Tim. 6:10), adherence to worldly philosophy (Col. 2:8), legalism (Gal. 3:1; 1:6; 5:7), indifference and spiritual coldness (Rev. 2:4; 3:16) are other causes for backsliding.
Backsliding grieves the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30), and it displeases our Lord (Heb. 10:38). There are natural consequences that follow this sin (Lev. 26:18-25).
How can we prevent backsliding in our spiritual life?
It is essential that we “abide” in Christ (Jn. 15:4-7), remain spiritually alert (Eph. 6:18), put on the full armor of God (v. 10), be prayerful (1 Thess. 5:17), etc. Seek to love the Lord God with all your mind, heart and personal being every day.

Why do Christians become backslidden? We all still possess the old nature that is “corrupt through deceitful lusts” (Eph. 4:22; Rom. 7:13-24; 1 Cor. 3:1-3). Lack of continuous fellowship by “abiding” in Christ results in a lack of spiritual vitality and ineffective Christian service (Jn. 15:4-8).
There is no other way to live the Christian life except by maintaining an intimate fellowship with our Lord. If we do not maintain that vital contact with Him we cannot sus-
We can thank God that He patiently perseveres with His saints. Just as we are to persevere in doing His will, we can be thankful that He has made a wonderful covenant with us in the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ.
We have a choice. We can progress or regress in our Christian life. We have a great responsibility in how we choose to live the Christian life. God is able to strengthen and progressively sanctify the Christian if we cooperate with Him (Heb. 3:12; Phil. 3:1016).
The promise to every backsliding Christian is to, “Return to Me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts” (Mal. 3:7). Acknowledge your sin, turn from it, trust in the Lord for forgiveness and ask the Holy Spirit to take control of your mind, heart and daily life. Jesus says, “Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place—unless you repent” (Rev. 2:5).
It is reassuring that the Bible clearly teaches that the truly spiritual regenerate can never be lost. We are his forever children. Once his child by the new birth, always his child. However we can lose our fellowship with God and our effectiveness in Christian service.

Prayer for Fannin County
That First Night in the Crate
By Gregg Flowers
We’ve been talking about crate training the last few weeks. First, we took a day with the door open, feeding him in there, putting his favorite toys in there and letting him come and go as he pleased. Now we’re to his first night in the crate. We have it next to our bed so he can smell you and hear you and you can hear him when he may fuss because he wants to go out. Again, puppies have a natural aversion to soiling their den.
At first with a little puppy (theoretically), he will probably whine to go out long before you’re ready to get up. With my own puppy it was 4:00. A very general rule of thumb, is that a puppy can “hold it” about an hour for every month of age. Although in reality, it’s usually much
longer than that. So when you hear Max whine a little, I advise that you pop up and carry him outside. You won’t always be utilizing “puppy express”, but at this juncture, if you depend on him to follow you out, he may stop and pee before you get to the door. My puppy did this when I paused to put on some shorts, so get ready to go out, then take your pup out of the crate and carry him outside.
What if he fusses when you put him into the crate and close the gate that first time? If you’ve given him a day to get used to the crate, and he’s already gone to the bathroom, he may settle within a few minutes. Just hang in there and wait for it. if he doesn’t settle, you’ll have to take the crate to another part of the house and set an alarm to get him up. Whatever you do, do NOT give in to his crying and let him out... His mother wouldn’t.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITION:
Seeing Sarah’s Softball Success: Bonham senior Wrape to extend diamond days w/Independence Community College in Kansas
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- Micky Englutt described Sarah Wrape as being “a ball of fire.”
“She has said some of the funniest things,” said Englutt, Bonham High School softball manager.
“She will make you laugh,” he said.
“She’s still that way.”
Wrape gave all who crowded into the Bonham High School library on Wednesday evening another reason to smile.
She signed her national letter of intent to play softball for Independence Community College in Kansas.
“I reached out to [the college], they got back to me and then I went on a visit,” said Wrape.
“I had heard about them,” she said, “watched some videos of them playing and liked how the coach was with the team.
“I felt like it was the right place for me.”
Wrape’s signing day continued a softball journey she has made in tandem with the
Bonham High School manager of the sport.
“I can’t tell you how proud I am of Sarah,” said Englutt, as he addressed the gathered crowd.
“I’ve been fortunate to see her grow up in this game since she was this tall,” he said, gesturing low and to his left side.
“I’ve coached her through every phase of her career. To see her to the finish is heartwarming.
“To get to continue playing is a big thing for her -- to experience college life as an athlete.”
Wrape will pitch for Independence -- something she has done since age eight, does during club play for Glory and did only occasionally last season for Bonham when not at first base.
“She didn’t get to pitch a lot last season for us, but she did have a 2.33 earned run average, a .237 opponent batting average and did something
I’ve only seen three times -- throw a no-hitter,” said Englutt. “That’s pretty amazing.”
Meanwhile, Wrape, a second-team all-district selection in 2021, has a career .306 batting average -- including hitting .400 as a freshman -- and .436 on-base percentage for Bonham, heading into her fourth season which starts next month.
“I want to do better [this season] than I have during any other year,” said Wrape.
“I want to have my best year,” she said, “since it’s my senior year.”

Ex-Lady Hornet Rion Baccus gets full hoops ride to SOSU
By Rich Hilliard
Rion Baccus, who as a sophomore helped Dodd City win the Class 1A State girls’ basketball title in 2021 with a 32-0 record, will extend her career in the sport at the next level.
Baccus, a 5-7 guard, has accepted a full basketball scholarship from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, an NCAA Division II school in Durant, according to her dad Brian Baccus. She will likely sign later this month.
Following her sophomore season at Dodd City, Baccus has continued her high school basketball career at Huckabay, which during her junior season reached the 1A State semifinals, lost to eventual champion Ackerly Sands and finished 35-7 overall.

Planting Trees
Master Gardener
The ideal time to plant trees is in the dormant season. Weather is cooler and allows the tree to establish roots before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth. Before planting, locate all underground utilities and overhead utility lines. Avoid planting trees where roots can infiltrate underground lines or tangle into overhead lines. Also look where structures such as buildings, sidewalks, and roadways are located. Allow enough distance for a fully mature tree to spread its roots and limbs without disturbing foundations or needing major pruning to keep its size small. If a fully mature tree will be too big for a certain site, do not plant it there. Use a smaller variety or do not plant any tree or shrub in that site. Plan for mature height and canopy spread of the tree. Remember the roots go out as far as the limbs.
Proper site preparation before and during planting, along with good followup care reduces transplant shock. Select a site in full sun. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball (container), and no deeper than the height of the root ball. Identify the trunk (root) flare - where the roots spread at the base of the tree. It should be partially visible after the tree has been planted. Most the new roots will develop in the top twelve
inches of soil. If planted too deep, new roots have difficulty developing due to lack of oxygen. Always lift the tree by the root ball, not the trunk. Straighten the tree in the hole before replacing the backfill.
Use the soil dug out of the hole as backfill around the root ball. NO soil amendments are added in the hole, not even compost, peat moss, or shredded pine bark. Use only the soil that had been taken out of the hole as back fill. Fill the hole about 1/3 full and gently pack the soil around the base of the root ball. If the tree is balled and burlapped, cut and remove the string or wire from around the trunk. Pull the burlap down from the top 1/3 of the root ball. Do not damage the trunk or roots in the process. Fill the remainder of the hole, and firmly pack the soil to eliminate air pockets.
Build a 4-inch-tall berm around the edge of the hole. Cover the soil with mulch (shredded bark or compost). Take care that the
actual trunk of the tree is not covered by dirt or mulch as this may cause decay of the bark at the base. A one to two inch unmulched space around the tree is adequate. The mulch and berm make it easier to water the tree and reduce weed competition. DO NOT apply fertilizer at the time of planting. Staking is not recommended.
Unstaked trees establish more quickly and develop stronger trunk and roots systems.
Water by filling the berm and mulched basin to settle soil around the root ball. First week, lightly water every day. Week two, water every other day. Week three, water every third day with 2-3 quarts of water. Week four and beyond –water once a week if needed. This weans the tree slowly from supplemental irrigation and produces a large root system.
*REMEMBER:
* These are just watering guidelines. More plants are killed by over-watering than by under-watering.
No pruning should be done the first year. Prune only dead or broken branches after planting. The tree should have a full season of growth in its new location before any corrective pruning is done.
