CORRECTED from Dec. 26, ‘23 Edition - The Luck of The Draw: Fannin County Republican Party Hosts Ballot Draw

By Rose Schwartz

Thursday, December 21, 2023, another item for the Fannin County History books came to life as the most can-

didates ever to run for elected office in Fannin County, gathered in the courtroom of the Fannin County Courthouse to vie for their place on the ballot for the primary election

that will be held on March 5, 2024. The Fannin County Republican Party hosted the “ballot draw” with Fannin County Republican Party Chairwoman Melanie Grammar along with

Fannin County Republican Party Precinct Chair 18, Mary Hale and Fannin County Republican Party Vice Chair, Darren York, officiating the event. If like myself you had

07/02/19

never known (or paid much attention to) how the candidates acquired their place on a ballot or why that is even important, read on, and you too can lay claim to that bit of trivia.

Styles of chance that include numbers in a hat, dominoes, and cards in a deck, are used to determine a candidate’s position on electoral ballots. This year, a deck of cards was used with the Ace card being the highest, the King being the next highest, descending downward to the 2 being the lowest card one could draw. The ballot, in a Presidential election year, begins with the President race and all the candidates competing for that office listed, and then listed are the senate races, railroad commissioner, judicial races, and other state offices before listing the local county races being run in the counties across a state. Those national and state races candidates who did not make the Fannin County Republican Party Primary Election Ballot Draw, had their place on the ballot determined by Fannin County Republican Party Chair Precinct 11, Joyce Buchanan and Fannin County Republican Party Chair Precinct 19, Violet Spell, drawing for them. This year, though he may be leading in all the polls, Donald J. Trump’s “Jack” card, will find him placing fourth on the ballot to Ron DeSantis’ “Ace”, David Stuckenbergs’ “King”, and Nikki Haleys’ “Queen.” To be named first among those competing for the same office has historically, in some cases, been an advantage. Fannin County is growing significantly, as is interest in being part of the governance of the county. This year there will be nine county offices listed on the ballot with only two of those offices being uncontested (County Constable Pct 3 and County Tax Assessor Collector.) Three candidates will be competing for County Commissioner Pct 1; four are running for County Commissioner Pct 3; two for County Constable Pct 1; two for County Constable Pct 2, three for Sheriff; two for District Judge, 336th Judicial District; and two for Fannin County Criminal District Attorney. I have been told there will be candidate forums before the election in March to give concerned voters the chance to hear from the candidates and help them in making their informed decisions this Spring. The first of those forums is slated for the morning of January 20, 2024, at the Multi-Purpose Complex Center in Bonham. More information can be found in the Fannin County Leader. This voter is definitely planning to attend. Hope to see you there.

• 24 Years Law Enforcement • 30 Years Military Press Release - The Fannin County Amateur Radio Club met December 16, 2023, at the Windom Feed Sack for the regular meeting and Christmas Party. One of the big things for the December meeting was the election of officers for 2024. There were drawings for various things that cause ‘ham hearts’ to pitter patter, and lots of fun discussions about all things radio. The good food that the Feed Sack is known for fueled the good times. Some of the upcoming things the club has in the works include a Technician Class to start January 8, 2024, via Zoom meetings, planning for Winter Field Day at the end of January (which will include the 3rd Chili/Soup Cookoff), and the big eclipse on April 8, 2024. The FCARC meets regularly on the third Saturday of each month at 9:00 at the Bois D’Arc Creek Cowboy Church. Weekly “Net Night” is Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. on frequency 145.470. Chris Wilson Announces Campaign for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct 3 I am Chris Wilson, a candidate in the Republican Primary for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct 3. This office is currently held by Jerry Magness, who is not running for reelection. The precinct is primarily in the eastern part of Fannin County, from Ladonia to the Red River, and includes Honey Grove, Telephone and northeast Bonham. After growing up in a farming family in Georgia, I joined the Marines out of high school and served on active and reserve duty for 14 years. While in the reserves, I attended college and then worked in the security technology industry for 30+ years protecting governments and businesses. Twenty plus years ago, I found land in Fannin County between Honey Grove and Ladonia to build a home and return to the rural life I was raised in by raising cattle and horses on our ranch. My first votes as a Republican included voting for Ronald Reagan, and I am a lifelong conservative who believes in serving as a way to return all the many blessings we share as Texans and Americans. Our state and county are in a time of growth that is very different from the past, and that requires new ideas and the best possible choices from our elected leadership. The maintenance of our county road infrastructure remains an important responsibility of the Commissioner and the largest cost for each precinct. I think the other issues we face are going to make a bigger difference than ever. We must meet the challenge of managing this growth in a smart way that protects the things that make Fannin County special. Our taxpayers and our budgets are severely strained which limits our ability to provide necessary services. I will make sure we properly manage the funds we have, and grow county revenues by bringing more state and federal funds back to Fannin County. I have long experience managing large and complicated budgets and contracts-and eliminating waste-while finding grants, tax incentives and private investment to grow the businesses entrusted to me in the past. As our County continues to grow, so does the threat of crime and other risks to our safety. I will strongly support law enforcement, firefighters and emergency services to offset this risk and will work tirelessly to make sure we are all safe. I am asking for your vote to serve you as your next County Commissioner for Precinct 3. Visit my website (joincw.com) to learn more, or call me at (903) 965-3331 for a talk. we were talking about fluffy's food being an important aspect of her longevity. - It's important to look at the labels on dog food, but you will have to look at a LOT of labels to find a really good quality dog food.- Don't be taken in by the language on the front of the bag. Because for example, when the label says “made with high quality chicken”, but you look closer at the ingredients and you see ‘chicken byproduct meal’, you know the manufacturer is essentially lying to you. Or when a package says something

pamperedpawsdoghotel.com like “promotes healthy skin and coat”, but the ingredients list starts with ground corn, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal and animal fat, they're lying. - FYI, it makes sense to have a basic mistrust of most dog food manufacturers. The first ingredient listed will be the ingredient with the largest percentage. Each lessening ingredient percentage is listed in order. - Ideally, you want to see some sort of literal meat as a first ingredient. I.e. Chicken, beef, fish, lamb, etc.. Chicken, beef or fish "meal" is ok, but I'd rather not see it as a first ingredient. Presence of organ meat liver, heart, kidney etc., is a huge plus, because organ meat is nutrient dense. - Things that disqualify a food right off the bat for me, is the presence anywhere on the list of "meat byproducts" (which means, you don't want to know what

that is), corn, wheat, or soy in any form. These are all fillers, and not good for your dog. As far as grains are concerned, brown rice and barley are just fine. - I also suggest avoiding the preservatives BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, food dyes Blue 2, Red 40, yellow 5 and 6, Propylene Glycol and rendered fat. BHA is on a list of known carcinogens and reproductive toxicants. BHT is also a carcinogen and has proven to cause kidney and liver failure in lab animals. - The preservative Ethoxyquin is illegal to use in human food because it’s deemed to be harmful if swallowed or comes in contact with your skin. Propylene Glycol is a moistening agent, and is chemically derived from Ethylene Glycol, aka antifreeze. But the dog food industry tells us propylene Glycol (PG) is “non-toxic” to

A Pump Station Takes Shape Press Release - Many key pieces of the Lake Ralph Hall project have taken shape this year—from dam and spillway to pipeline, which is now being laid. Case in point is the pump station, which broke ground late January. The station will

pump water from Lake Ralph through miles of pipeline to treatment. Construction on the pump station has made significant headway, especially this fall, with the foundation and the pump room walls complete.

Crews have begun installing the station’s foundational electric components in preparation of placing the electrical room slab. The station’s massive pumps, interior pipes and electrical components are being manufactured. Some

pipe has arrived to connect the station to the lake’s intake structure, and that will be laid out along its future route. The pump station is on schedule for completion with the rest of the lake project.

our dog. I do not believe them. My current dog Tillie, eats a combination of kibble, freeze dried food I rehydrate, and a frozen food. The ingredients include organ meat, fruit, and vegetables. Also, my dog doesn't get tap water. Only purified. In closing, feeding my dog in this fashion is not cheap, but it is easier than cooking for her each day. And I figure it will be worth it, if God willing, she lives to be 20.

In answer to the calls about we graded all the gravel off the roads, we actually didn't, it just was mixed up in the material from deeper on the roadway. The slow rain the week before saturated the ground and until it is completely compacted down again it will be looser than normal. We are dressing up the roads that are the worst by just lightly going over the surface and smoothing them out. We are looking at buying a 9 wheel roller that would be used on roads that need it in the future for compaction. With the Christmas holidays

This is a easy way to make a good cobbler that takes only a few ingredients to make. It's got a sweet, juicy filling and crisp golden crust!

If using frozen berries, be sure to add them when they're frozen. If you let them thaw, they'll be mushy, and the consistency will be off.

BLACKBERRY COBBLER

Preheat oven to 350°. Combine 1 cup of sugar with the flour in a large bowl. Stir in the milk, then the melted butter. Mix until well-combined. Pour onto the bottom of a greased 9x9 inch baking dish. Distribute the berries throughout the top. They'll sink in further as they bake. Sprinkle ¼ c. sugar over the top, reserving 2 Tbsp. for later. Bake for 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle remaining 2 Tbsp. sugar on the top. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Serve immediately, with ice cream of course!

1 ¼ c. plus 2 Tbsp. sugar separated 1 c. self-rising flour 1 c. milk, whole is best ½ stick butter melted. (4 Tbsp.) 2 c. fresh or frozen blackberries rinsed and patted dry vanilla ice cream for serving

TXDOT started on the replacement of the bridge on CR 1020 this week and it will be closed for 3-4 months at this time. Fannin County Commissioners Court – Wrapping up 2023

By Rose Schwartz

Tuesday, December 26, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:01 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with County Judge and all County Commissioners (except for Commissioner Self) present. Judge Cunningham led the Invocation which was followed by Commissioner Magness leading the Pledges. There were no Introductions and no speakers for

Public Forum. ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the bills needing to be paid were $220,588.70 with the payroll being $254,608.72. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve payment with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion that passed. DISCUSSION ONLY ITEMS: 7. Update regarding TxDOT Grant Proposal for

safety items in Precinct 1 – County Judge: Patricia Wolf who had first spoken to the court December 5, 2023, regarding the pursuit of applying for grant money for Precinct 1 safety road signage, spoke to give an update on her efforts. She relayed details of a meeting she had with Tx DOT on the 15th of this month. She noted she was informed that potentially there were monies available to help with possibly 12 posts and that it would probably be February/March before she would know if the

committee in charge of reviewing grant requests would either approve or reject their request and be told how much or how little would be supplied. Before concluding she relayed thanks to the volunteers (that have since been disbanded) who helped in canvassing the roads of Precinct 1 and relayed thanks to the Fannin County Leader for their assistance in the efforts of finding those volunteers. A discussion ensued that included a comment from Commissioner Magness on the importance of adequate sig-

nage enabling emergency vehicles to reach their destinations. DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION AND ACTION ITEMS: 8. Approval to purchase AT&T First Net cell phone for Emergency Management – County Judge: Fannin County Emergency Coordinator Troy Hudson first apologized to the court for a lack of research on this matter when he first presented this to the court. He then explained how a discussion with an AT&T service director for this region revealed to him that the license for a public safety

EM entity was free and that all the county would have to cover was the monthly service charge that was basically $38.29 for the phone and $30.00 for the hot spot. A discussion ensued where it was confirmed there was no need for the county to purchase any equipment and the total cost to the county would be approximately $68.00 a month. Commissioner Magness then made the motion to approve with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed. 9. Appoint Constable to Precinct 1 – County Judge: Judge Cunningham explained how there are two candidates running to fill this position in the next election but in the meantime the current constable’s health problems have created the need to temporarily appoint someone to this position for two months. A discussion then ensued that included comments from Sheriff Johnson and Robert Williams. After a review of all that would be required of Mr. Williams should he be appointed, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve appointing Robert Williams as Constable for Precinct 1 to take office January 1st. The motion was seconded by Commissioner McQueen and the motion passed. 10. Approve proceeding with grant applications for County Law Enforcement through the Governor’s Public Safety Office – County Auditor: Ms. Whipple explained why the court’s approval was needed for grant applications for various areas of public safety like body armor for law enforcement and how this action would pose no cost to the county. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed. 11. Terminate current copier leases and copier service with Function4 and Konica Minolta – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane referred to the court, the action taken last week and commented on the contract that has been submitted to DataMax. Judge Cunningham noted the importance of having a signed contract in hand from DataMax before terminating the agreement with the current service providers. After some discussion, Commissioner Kopf made the motion to give Judge Cunningham the authority to terminate the copier contracts with Function4 and Konica Minolta if a signed contract is received from DataMax. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed. 12. Approval of Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Bonham related to development and implementation of regulation in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted contracts on this item and item 13 were not yet finalized and asked for a motion to pass on these items. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to pass on item 12 & 13 with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed. 13. Approval of Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Leonard related to development and implementation of regulation in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: See item 12. What God Expects From His Children In 2024

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Many will have thoughts about ‘new years’ resolutions. Let us consider what God expects from His children in this upcoming year. God expects His children to be different from the world. John wrote, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:15-16). Paul quoted Isaiah 52:11 when he stated “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord” (2 Corinthians 6:17). God expects His children to be obedient. John helps us to understand the importance of obedience by stating “let

no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous” (1 John 3:7). Peter said that we are to live “as obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance” (1 Peter 1:14). Paul warns us that “no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience” (Ephesians 5:6). God expects His children to wear the name Christian. Concerning Christ, Peter preached that “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:11-12). Those who followed Jesus “were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26). Peter encourages us with “if any man suffer

as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf” (1 Peter 4:16). Paul simply states that “whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Colossians 3:17). God expects His children to love one another. John gives us an important principle “let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7). Again John records that “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also” (1 John 4:20-21). As we make plans for this new year, let us consider what God expects from His children in 2024.

Sunday Morning Re-take

“Remember His Blessings”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in Psalm 103:1-2, “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” In Psalm 103, David recalls some of the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon him, including forgiveness, restored health, love, satisfaction, and deliverance, just to name a few. As we look back on 2023, we must always remember the blessings that He has given us as well. It’s sad to say, but oftentimes we take what the Lord has given us for granted, and we forget to take the time to stop and thank Him for what

He’s done for us. As I’ve said before, this is a very dangerous thing. Throughout 2023, the Lord has greatly blessed our church, my family, and myself as well, and I look forward to what He has in store for us in 2024! As I have said before, one of my favorite hymn writers of all time is Fanny Crosby (18201915). Looking back on 2023, I can’t help but think of this classic hymn that she wrote in 1875. “To God be the glory, great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that

all may go in. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, Let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son and give him the glory, great things he has done!” If you are looking to find a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday! Bro. Josh Stevenson

What The Bible Says About: Wisdom

King Solomon was noted as being one of the wisest men that ever lived. Solomon asked for wisdom and God gave it to him! If you are seeking discernment or understanding in an area of your life, I pray that you would surrender it to God and ask Him to give you the knowledge and wisdom that only He can supply. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Daniel 2:21 He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings;he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; Psalm 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Proverbs 16:22 Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.

Proverbs 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, Ecclesiastes 7:12 For the pro-

tection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

I am Robert Willams and am seeking the Republican nomination for Fannin County Constable, Precinct 1. I have lived in Texas for 46 years with the last five in Fannin County. After high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps serving honorably for four years. I am married to Brooke, a lifelong Fannin County resident. We have three children and have made this our home. My 20 years in Law Enforcement have given me extensive experience in civil process, criminal investigation, active deterrent (Patrol) and administrative duties. In 2018 I moved to Fannin County accepting a Criminal Investigator position with the Sheriff’s Office. Over the past five years I have worked diligently for the citizens of Fannin County and Texas with citizen safety foremost in my actions. I believe the Constable for Precinct 1 is a full-time job, and I am committed to this end. A citizen should not have to wait for help while an elected official gets off work from their regular job. I believe the protection of the community and its citizens is the paramount responsibility of Law Enforcement.

Police Department, Anna Fire Department/Police Department, Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, and Roanoke Police Department. The diverse representation of these teams reflects the tournament’s broader goal of fostering community bonds among local heroes. The tournament serves as a platform for first responders to come together beyond their professional duties, strengthening the sense of community and shared purpose. It goes beyond the boundaries of badges and uniforms, creating an environment where these local heroes can engage in friendly competition and build lasting connections. Red River Hoops, the driving force behind this annual event, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to community service. By organizing the Heroes Classic, they aim to express gratitude to the first responders who tirelessly serve and protect Windom and its neighboring areas. As the clock ticks down to the tournament day, there’s still an opportunity for additional teams to register and be part of this remarkable event. The call is open to all first responder teams, encouraging a broader participation that reflects the spirit of unity and camaraderie. The event is not just about basketball; it’s about fostering connections, building relationships, and honoring the men and women who stand on the front lines for the community’s safety. Spectators can expect a day filled with exciting matches, cheering crowds, and a strong sense of community pride. Beyond the competitive spirit, the Red River Hoops 5th Annual Heroes Classic encapsulates the essence of community involvement and support. It serves as a reminder that, when communities and first responders collaborate, the bonds formed can extend far beyond the basketball court. Saturday, January 20th, is poised to be a day of sportsmanship, community engagement, and heartfelt appreciation in Windom, Texas. The Red River Hoops 5th Annual Heroes Classic stands not only as a sporting event but as a symbol of unity, gratitude, and community strength.

Press Release - Thank you to the M.W. Fair Miller Grant Foundation for the very generous grant awarded to the Food Pantry! There is no excuse for children to go hungry in this county. But it happens every day. In every community 20% of kids are food insecure and/ or undernourished. 20%, or 1 in 5 Texas children experiences hunger. Hunger

deprives kids of more than just food. According to Feeding America, kids who don’t get enough to eat — especially during their first three years — begin life at a serious disadvantage. (feedingtexas.org website) In 2023 Fannin County Community Ministries Food Pantry has served 2,730 children of Fannin County who are food

Press Release - The Creative Arts Center located at 200 W 5th St Bonham is

excited to host their 2nd annual Wellness Festival on Saturday January 27th from 10am-1pm! Vendor applications are currently being accepted for vendors in fields related to wellness, health, beauty, selfcare, massage, aromatherapy, and spirituality. We would love to include herbalists, dietitians, counselors, and life coaches, and to have both vendors offering products as

insecure. In addition to the food provided for the families we provide relief in the form of nutritional kid-friendly items to those in need. Students may receive food at school through the Food 4 Kids program, but often face hunger at home and especially on the weekends. At the pantry our volunteers provide each child under the age of 17 with a specialized box of nutritional and fun food tailored to kids’ tastes. In addition, we also give them toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo. When available we also pack a book, toy, coloring books, crayons or a clothing item to pique their interest when they receive their box each month. We include a variety of food in the box i.e., Lunchables, pizza, fruit cups, juice, milk, soup, crackers, oatmeal, fruit snacks, popcorn, treats, cookies, peanut butter and a can of chili or Chef Boyardee. When the pantry receives fresh fruit and vegetables, we will also include them. The grant from M.W. Fair Miller Foundation will provide us with the means to continue our efforts here in Fannin County to feed the children that are food insecure.

Soar Into 2024 With a First Day Hike at a Texas State Park

AUSTIN — As the year ends, so does Texas State Parks’ Centennial Celebration, but the fun doesn’t stop when the clock strikes midnight. Kick off your resolution to explore the outdoors in 2024 with a First Day Hike at a state park, which will host ranger-guided and selfguided walks, bike rides, paddling trips and polar plunges in honor of the national initiative aimed at getting people outdoors. Last year, nearly 8,000 participants shattered the previous attendance record New Year’s Day by ringing in Texas State Parks’ 100th birthday with a First Day Hike. Texans across the state traveled to one of the 83 participating parks and hiked, biked and paddled a combined 17,190 miles. “Texas State Parks’ staff had so much fun celebrating the 100th birthday with the people of Texas this year,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “Last year, Texas led the nation in First Day Hikes participation and miles walked. We invite everyone to come back and be part of the fun again this year as we usher in the next century of memories. Whether visiting for the first time, or returning to your favorite park for more fun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.” Trails at Texas State Parks range in length and difficulty levels. Some short, easy trails are perfect for family-friendly scenic strolls, while more strenuous ones can challenge experienced hikers. Trail maps for all Texas State Parks can be found on TPWD’s website, the recently redesigned official Texas State Park app and individual park webpages.

"I am thrilled to see the continued growth and success of the First Day Hikes program,” said Lewis Ledford, executive director of the National Association of State Park Directors. “This initiative has become a cherished tradition, providing individuals and families with the opportunity to embrace the outdoors, and kick off the year with a commitment to health and well-being." TPWD strongly encourages anyone planning a trip to a Texas state park to reserve a day pass in advance since some parks are expected to reach their capacity limit. Reserve day passes online through the TPWD reservation website or by calling (512) 3898900. Examples of some First Day Hikes are listed alphabetically below: Texas polar plungers can dive into the new year at the West Texas oasis Balmorhea State Park. The polar plunge will take place at 9 a.m. off the diving boards into the pool which is a constant 72-75 degrees yearround. For more information, visit the Balmorhea State Park page. Flock to Government Canyon State Natural Area from 8- 11 a.m. for a guided birding hike though the wildlands on the northside of San Antonio. Participants can bring their own equipment or borrow a pair of binoculars. Reservations are required and spots can be secured at the Friends of Government Canyon website. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Shutterbugs can take part in a First Day Hike photo scavenger hunt at Lake Colorado City State

Park. The scavenger hunt has two options and can be guided or self-guided. Participants can pick up a list at the main office. The guided hike is at 2 p.m. at the Cactus Cut Trailhead. Welcome 2024 outside during the midnight hike at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. The hike, which starts at 11:30 p.m., will traverse about a mile and a half through the Cross Timbers Trail. The guided hike will explore the creature sounds of the Texas winter night sky. Staff recommend participants bring a flashlight, bundling up for the weather, sturdy shoes and water for the walk. Start the new year off by hitting the trail and participating in Ray Roberts Lake State Parks’ TriPark-A-Thon. Participants can hike at one unit or participate in a hike at all three units and receive a prize. Moderate guided hikes are scheduled at staggered times throughout the day so folks can participate in the tri-park-a-thon. More information about the trails and times can be found on the park’s page. Humans and their four-legged family members can start the new year on the right foot (and paw!) with a First Day Dog Walk at Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center. At 9 a.m., participants can hit the trails with Sheldon Lake’s own Bark Ranger for a guided hike. Hikers will meet at the Pond Center to begin. All trails are ADA accessible, and this event is for all ages. Dogs must be leashed to participate. Preregister for this hike by emailing Victoria.Sharrock@tpwd.texas. gov or calling (281) 456-2800, x232. Spots are limited.

Toyota ShareLunker Program Embarks on 38th Season ATHENS – New Year’s Day arrives on Monday and with it comes the kickoff of the 38th Toyota ShareLunker season. Anglers from across Texas and the nation will cast their lines in anticipation of landing a Legacy Lunker largemouth bass (13-plus pounds) in Texas’ world-class fisheries. The Toyota ShareLunker program has played an integral

part in making Texas a destination for hundreds of thousands of anglers in search of this prized sport fish. Grabbing a pole, hitting the water and hauling in a 13-pound plus largemouth bass would be a great way to jumpstart the new year. The cast of the line, the lure landing just right on the water and a strike from a possible fish of a lifetime is what many anglers strive to

Lunkers at O.H. Ivie on the same day (Feb. 2). Anglers from seven states, including Texas, etched their name into the program’s record book: Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico and Washington. Anglers have submitted 650 Legacy Lunkers in the first 37 years of the ShareLunker program and during the 2022 and 2023 collection seasons, all the loaned fish were healthy and returned to the lake where they were caught. During the first three months of the season (Jan. 1 through March 31), anglers who reel in a 13-plus pound bass can loan it to TPWD for the ShareLunker selective breeding and stocking program. These anglers can call the ShareLunker hotline at (903) 681-0550 to report their catch 24/7 through March 31, 2024. Anglers who catch and loan one of these 13-plus pound lunkers earn Legacy Class status, receive a catch kit filled with merchandise, a 13lb+ Legacy decal for their vehicle or boat, VIP access to the Toyota ShareLunker Annual Awards event, a high-quality replica mount of their fish from Lake Fork Taxidermy, and Bass University will provide a swag pack and annual subscription. These anglers will also receive entries into two separate drawings – a Legacy Class Drawing and the year-end Grand Prize Drawing. Both drawings will award the winner a $5,000 Bass Pro Shops shopping spree. The year-round Toyota ShareLunker program offers four levels of participation for catching bass over eight pounds or 24-inches in Texas. Once a lunker is reeled in, anglers need to enter the catch data on the Toyota ShareLunker mobile app – available for free from the Apple App Store and Google Play – or on the Toyota ShareLunker online app at TexasSharelunker. com.

Cooper GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Catfish continue to be good as reel in the new year. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 50 degrees; 1.76 feet below pool. Recent rains have brought the lake up 6 inches but still close to 2 feet low. The shallow bite has moved out to 5-8 feet on 2.5 squarebill crankbaits and rattletraps close to change of depth spots. Carolina rigs working with smaller baits in 1215 feet on humps and points. Alabama rigs are good on long points closer to the end in 15-18 feet of water. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 2.21 feet below pool. Reeling the new year with consistent fishing patterns. Some bass are suspended at the dam in 15-20 feet of water. Catching the occasional fish on a squarebill crankbait on boat ramps. Jigs and creature baits, working well on concrete and rock in deeper locations. Deepwater rock piles, brush piles and ledges using jerkbaits, swimbaits, Carolina rigs and Alabama rigs. When targeting sand bass a thumper to attract them to your boat is a must. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 52 degrees; 0.83 feet below pool. Lake level is up one foot this week, thanks to several inches of rain in the watershed. White bass can be caught off the bottom using slabs in 42 feet of water. Crappie are in 20-25 feet of water in the creeks using minnows or small jigs. Bass are slow but a good time of year to catch a trophy bass. Hard to beat a slowly fished Alabama rig or jerkbait at this time. Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 54 degrees; 0.26 feet below pool. Hybrid striper and white bass are feeding on large schools of threadfin shad. Targeting these fish is tricky as they start to stack up in open water, but plastics are catching fish. The trophy catfish bite is good with catches up to 55 pounds using fresh cut gizzard shad in 25 feet of water. Eater size catfish bite is slowing. Fish are in 30 feet of water biting prepared bait such as punch bait and dip bait. The crappie bite is improving. We are seeing fish caught in 18-25 feet of water using jigs and minnows. These fish are related to structure including bridge columns and deeper brush. The largemouth bite has slowed down. Fish are still being caught shallow on docks and rip wrap using worms, brush hogs and even some square built crankbaits. Texoma GOOD. Water normal stained; 55 degrees; 1.64 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good using flukes drifting 50-65 feet of water under gulls in the river channels and slow rolling big swimbaits off main lake points in 15-25 feet of water for big fish. Crappie fishing is slow using jigs under docks on 12-15 feet of water. Dead minnows on brush piles in 15 feet of water on brush piles producing smaller fish. Catfish are good drifting cut gizzards shad chunks in 15-25 feet of water near the rivers and creeks with the inflow. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair on jerk baits along the bluffs off the banks in 10-15 feet of water. Soft plastics are still good for smallmouth in the backs of the coves on warmer days.

experience. “ShareLunker season sparks excitement, not just for big bass catches, but for a shared commitment to conservation,” said Natalie Goldstrohm, Toyota ShareLunker program coordinator. “Anglers, scientists, and industry partners unite to gather vital data for trophy bass management, stocking of worldclass offspring, and critical genetics data to make bass fishing bigger and better in Texas. The 2023 season was full of achievements, and we are enthusiastic about what unfolds in 2024.” The 2023 season was another banner year for the program, with multiple milestones reached and memories made by anglers working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries Division staff that make the program a success. Key highlights from the 2023 Toyota ShareLunker collection season include: •A record 15 Legacy Class •ShareLunkers produced from O.H. Ivie. •Five fish weighing more than 14 pounds. •Angler Kyle Hall recorded a Legacy Lunker in back-to-back seasons. •Anglers Dalton Smith and Caden Cowan reeled in Legacy

Don't miss this informative presentation by our own Refuge Manager, Kathy Whaley. Arrive early--this session fills up every year. Refuge Rocks for Kids: Saturday January 20th at 10am: Armored Armadillo! Animals come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Some are big and furry; others can be small and slimy… And some even have a full suit of armor! Like our friend the armadillo. The word armadillo means 'little armored one' in Spanish, which makes sense when you see it. An armadillo is a mammal that looks like a cross between a roly-poly bug and an armored tank! In our Armored Armadillo class, the youth will discover what life is like for our armored friends. Each child will make an armadillo craft to take home and have fun participating in armadillo activities. Come join us on January 20 for a free class to learn all about our resident armored friends here at Hagerman! For ages 5-10. Registration Required.
