Hunger Deprives Our Kids of More Than Just Food

generous grant to the Fannin County Community Ministries, FOOD PANTRY!

It’s a simple fact: A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough food to eat today. In the United States, 12 million children may not know where they will get their next meal.

The Fannin County Community Ministries Food Pantry supported 2308 children of Fannin County in 2022, that are food insecure. Students may receive food for lunch at school, but often face hunger at home and on the weekends.

The pantry provides each child under the age of 18 a specialized box of nutritional and fun food tailored to kids’ tastes. We also give them toothpaste, toothbrushes and shampoo. When available we also pack a book, toy, coloring books, crayons or a clothing item to pique their interest when they receive their box each month. We include a variety of food in the box i.e., Lunchables, pizza, fruit cups, juice, milk, soup, crackers, oatmeal, fruit snacks, popcorn, treats, cookies, peanut butter and a can of chili or Chef Boyardee. When the pantry receives fresh fruit and vegetables, we also include them. Many of the children eagerly await receiving their box. Families with children, especially single-parent families, are more likely to face hunger. Hunger and malnutrition jeopardize children’s health, development and career readiness.

19. Discussion, consideration and action regarding changing the frequency of Commissioners Court meetings from weekly to bi-weekly – Commissioner Precinct 2: Judge Cunningham clarified this item was put on the agenda by Commissioner Self and regards reducing the number of meetings to two a month.

Judge Cunningham questioned how this would affect emergency management and other county departments before proposing the item be tabled

until a study be conducted into what impact it would have. A lengthy discussion ensued on the pros and cons with Fannin County citizen Colonel Walter Goodwater, retired, speaking at the podium to voice his observations that this is “more about the way the county does business.” He proposed that the whole system in totality be looked at and not just the inconvenience of weekly meetings. Commissioner Self commented on when the county went to four meetings and how other counties are getting by with lesser meetings. More discussion ensued with various comments offered on differing topics before the motion was made by Commissioner Self to table this item until February 7th with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

Discussion, consideration and action to declare items to be placed in Auctioneer Express for sale as surplus for all precincts –Commissioner Precinct 3: Commissioner Magness explained why this was placed on the agenda with Fannin County Purchasing Agent Shonda Magness noting she had the paperwork for each of the Commissioners to fill out with what they wanted placed for sale. Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

21. Discussion, consideration and action regarding hanging the plaque from THC in the historic courthouse per the drawings –County Judge for County Auditor: Judge Cunningham asked Commissioner Lane if she had this placed on the agenda. She replied she had in response to a request made by Alicia Whipple. Judge Cunningham explained a controversy involving the plaque and a sentiment held by previous County Judge Randy Moore that a misrepresentation existed with the verbiage on the plaque regarding funding given by THC for the courthouse as being a major portion of the renovation funding. A discussion ensued with two citizens stating opposition to the hanging of the plaque and a third citizen, Sarah Richardson of Telephone, offering the suggestion that the plaque be accompanied with a secondary plaque stating the amount given by THC and the amount paid for by Fannin County. After citing this controversy as an example of the need to be cautious with contractual agreements, Judge Cunningham noted his being in consensus with Commissioner Lane that agreements, however undesirable, needed to be honored. The motion was then made by Commissioner Lane to hang the plaque per the drawings with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed unanimously. Judge Cunningham noted the commission of a secondary plaque would be pursued even if he had to pay for it himself.

Commissioner Self agreed with the comment made about discussion not being directed at anyone and how its all about doing what is best for Fannin County. Commissioner Magness stated he hopes everyone has a good week. Commissioner Kopf commented on his newness and his appreciation for all the discussion had during the meeting and noted it his desire to do things right before thanking everyone for their attendance. Judge Cunningham commented on his upcoming training, his appreciation for everyone’s open discussion (noting we all have the same votes) before introducing TAC’s County Relations Officer Rhita Koches. This major change for us is an attempt to clean up the streets and yards when papers are not picked up by residents, we believe this will create a cleaner environment. This change will also help those who are unable to get their paper from the yard or driveway. We appreciate you, our readers. Announcing the 2023 Fannin County Master Gardeners Spring Garden Expo

Press Release - It’s that time of year and plans are underway for the 2023 Master Gardeners, Spring Garden, Lawn, and Home Expo. The event will occur on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex in Bonham.

The Fannin County Master Gardeners are excited to bring this anticipated event to the community. We are looking for vendors interested in participating in the Spring Garden Expo.

This is an excellent opportunity for merchants to be exposed to the public in a positive and impactful way, establishing future contacts and name recognition. Vendors will have the opportunity to display and sell local and regional products. The Multipurpose Complex offers participating vendors enlarged

booth space allowing for more extraordinary displays and demonstrations. Along with the vendor booths, Fannin County Master Gardeners will also offer a silent auction with items donated by local merchants, participating vendors and items prepared by local Master Gardeners.

In addition, we will have expert speakers for FREE workshops on topics such as hobby farming/small acreage homesteading, edible landscaping, integrated pest management, composting, healthy soil, and more.

For additional information on vendors’ applications and program updates, please see our Facebook page or web page at https://txmg.org/fannin or call Fannin County Master Gardeners at 903-5837453.

worldwide forced into sexual exploitation. Sexually explicit videos, usually in foreign countries, with children performing sex acts is part of that $99 billion, usually with a parent there. There is approximately $51 Billion dollars made from forced or caroused labor in usually foreign factories, many with parent companies in the US. That figure is based on approximately 21 million humans used as forced labor. One in six runaways in the US are likely to end up in the sex trade, homeless children or children from broken homes are targets. Pedophiles target these children on the internet posing as chil-

dren themselves. Females forced into domestic servitude are likely to be sexually exploited as well.

Human slavery and human trafficking is a humanity crisis that is world wide and effects all of us. Both are driven by supply and demand, industries in the US bypass the laws by moving factories offshore or to countries where enforcement is only given lip service.

Over 175 nations have ratified the UN Protocol to prevent, suppress and punish traffickers in humans. The US Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 contains similar language. Texas Code of Criminal Procedures Article 13.12, Trafficking of Persons and Texas Penal Code 20A, Trafficking of Persons outlines the Texas law on human slavery and human trafficking.

Do we have it in our County? Absolutely! Fannin County has a major US highway and a state highway running east and west and both intersect major highways running north and south. These are major trafficking routes. There have been a number of large trucks stopped or broken down with the trailer containing immigrants. No food, no water, no ventilation and no toilet facilities except a bucket. We, as a society and a nation must become educated and vigilant to the issue of human slavery and human trafficking, especially in our state with the border influx we face daily. Recently a picture of two hand signals that, if used would tell a stranger if someone is being held against their will. It is posted on the Facebook page for the Constable PCT 3-Fannin Co page. This sign could be used in any number of situations, abductions, domestics, kids being taken against their will.

Game Warden Field Notes

Does Your Mother Know That You’re Out?

Tom Green County Game Wardens patrolled a city street late at night, when a white vehicle sped by in a 40-mph zone. The warden sped up to catch the vehicle and finally paced him at 60-mph. The warden attempted to stop the

vehicle, but the driver evaded. Once pursued, the suspect drove down a residential alley and crashed into a garage. The suspect abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. No one on scene was injured. Multiple agencies responded to assist with the crash and search for the suspect. During

the investigation, wardens could hear the suspect’s cell phone ring over and over. Once in the vehicle, they found the cell phone connected via Bluetooth. The phone continued to ring as they gathered evidence. Eventually, wardens along with their city police counterparts answered the phone. The caller identified herself as the suspect’s mother. Believing the officers were buddies of her adult child and playing a joke on her, she identified the suspect and demanded to speak with them. Wardens explained the situation and discovered that over the years, the suspect accumulated multiple felony warrants. Charges pending.

Melissa Maxwell with Bonham’s Visitor Center located at 327 N. Main, then spoke to invite everyone to City Hall on February 2nd from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as well as to the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center from 4:00 p.m. to & 7:00 p.m. for activities being held to commemorate Bonham’s 175th Anniversary. Last to speak was citizen Rusty Deets who asked about BEDCO’s meeting agenda availability on the website.

5. Consideration and possible action regarding

increased costs of lift station at 121 and 10th St.: Ms. Cooper explained this is needed for the expansion of development in that area. She noted how a few years back the estimated cost for this was at $55,000.00 but with recent increased costs, that amount has increased to $205,000.00 Citing increased development in the area necessitating this, Ms. Cooper opened the floor for discussion on the matter. Bonham City Manager Sean Pate weighed in with his thoughts and a detail of many of the current new developments and those in the works.

After a lengthy discussion was had that included different parties’ responsibilities, President McDonald asked if BEDCO’s budget would need to be amended. Ms. Cooper noted an amendment would be needed after which Mr. Pate added the City would also have to deal with a budget amendment as well. A motion was made by Wayne Moore to approve amending the budget with Board Member Ernie Quintana seconding the motion. The motion passed with Kelly Royse voting nay.

6. Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Cooper began her report detailing the clean-up of the lot across from Neighbors Winery that had an unanticipated cost of $3,400.00. She announced Davis Lawn Care is the new landscaper that handled that clean up and will be handling future projects. Ms. Cooper then touched on H & H Planning (aka H & H Architects) as being the planners for the downtown redevelopment with a map being made available soon. She noted how she would be attending The International Council of Shopping Centers on Wednesday and

Thursday (a collective of architecture, infrastructure, engineering design, developers etc.) The finalization of Tongrun’s tax abatement was also covered (noting the next step is the County Commissioners Court) as well as the increase of interest in downtown grants. She then noted the 121 project (the land between Braums and Aarons) has all the engineering plans that will enable the tenants (developers) to be able to move forward with their pad sites.

Lastly, Ms. Cooper noted she had been able to recruit an intern from Texas A&M Commerce and is looking forward to working with him.

7. Adjourn to Executive Session per 551.072 to discuss real estate and 551.087 economic development negotiations: A motion was made, seconded and passed to enter Executive Session at 5:53 p.m. After some time, a motion was made, seconded and passed to return to Regular Session at 6:33 p.m.

8. Return to regular session; consideration and possible resulting from Executive Session: Upon returning into Regular session, Ernie Quintana made the motion to approve the Executive Director Gayle Cooper making an offer on the real estate discussed. The motion was seconded by Wayne Moore and the motion passed unanimously.

9. Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 6:33 p.m.

NOT Everyone Who Calls Jesus “Lord” Will Be Saved

By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)

The very title of this article is from the Lord Jesus Christ, the son of God. Jesus makes this bold statement “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Christ is telling everyone that one must be more than moral for salvation; one must be more than religious for salvation. The Lord asked this question, “why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46).

The message is that one must be OBEDIENT for salvation. We find that Jesus “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9). How does one obey the Lord?

Jesus said that faith(believing) is necessary, “if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). Jesus is “the Lamb of God, which ta-

Jesus said that repentance is necessary, “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). Paul made the statement that God “now commandeth all men every where to repent” (Acts 17:30).

The Lord said, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32).

We want Christ to confess us before the Father with, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

Christ said “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:16). Peter would teach, “repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38).

We see that Jesus Christ authorized this teaching. Again the Lord said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing

them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). We see that God, the Father, Christ the Son of God, and the Holy Spirit have authorized the teaching of baptism.

In the last book of the Bible, Jesus told John to write to the church in Smyrna about the importance of faithfulness to the Savior. “be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). The crown of life, eternal life, is what everyone is looking for. Paul wrote, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-78).

Bonham - A collaboration with local officials, area pastors of different denominations, and civilians from across the city, is gearing up for a Citywide Community Prayer event that will take place at 11:15a.m. on Friday, January 27, by the flagpole of the Bonham Police Department, 301 E. 5th, Bonham, TX 75418.

This event is open to the public as we come together in a “prayer of unity” for the future of the Bonham Police Department and City of Bonham, Texas. Please join us as we come together as one. “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” - Proverbs 19:21

Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Higher Ground”

Hello everyone!

What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning!

As we move into 2023, I am reminded of what the Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:1-2. “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” This year will bring its challenges, but, as the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We must remember to be of good cheer as we face the trials & tribulations of this world, because Jesus has overcome the world.

One of most well-known hymn writers is Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr. Some of the hymns he has written include “No, Not One!” and “Count Your Blessings.” This week’s hymn is one of his most well-

known hymns.

“I’m pressing on the upward way, New heights I’m gaining every day; Still praying as I’m onward bound, “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

“My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Though some may dwell where these abound, My prayer, my aim, is higher ground.”

“Lord, lift me up, and let me stand By faith, on heaven’s tableland; A higher plane than I have found, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

If you are in search of a good

church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day!

News from Oakwood Cemetery

Press Release - Oakwood was beautiful this December with poinsettias, wreaths, and cedar sprays throughout the cemetery. We had help this year taking up the poinsettias from the veterans’ graves. Thank you to Jackson Bryant, Luke Bryant, and Case Householder. It is always good to have young men interested in helping at Oakwood. The trees are bare now of leaves, and the cleanup of leaves has started. This year was different for the oak and pecan trees. There were no pecans and very few acorns on the trees. The squirrels did not have much to eat!

THERESA EVELINE MCLARRY

Theresa Eveline McLarry, 98, of Houston, Texas, was called home to her Heavenly Father on January 7, 2023.

Theresa was born on April 14, 1924, to Dewey and Ila Riley on their farm in Trenton, Texas. After Theresa graduated from Trenton High School in 1941, she moved to Dallas, Texas where she worked as a telephone operator. Shortly after the war, while travelling home for the weekend by bus, she met Joe Ready McLarry. They were married on November 27, 1947, and later settled in Arlington, Texas, where they went on to have three children: twins Sylvia and Cynthia, and later another daughter, Vanessa. Theresa enjoyed taking care of her family, helping Joe run an Exxon Service Station, and working in her yard, where she raised all kinds of flowers. For thirty years, they were active members of the First Methodist Church. She also loved to cook, and especially to bake pies. Her all-time favorite was chocolate meringue pie, and luckily enough for her family, she baked a pie almost every day. When she and Joe retired, they moved back to Trenton where they built their dream house on a hill. They had a huge garden every year and many fruit trees and flowers. She loved having her grandchildren around, and when they visited, she would take them out to the farm where she grew up. After Joe passed away, Theresa moved to Houston to be near her daughter, Sylvia.

She is survived by her children, Vanessa Renfrow, Cynthia Crouse and husband Dave, Sylvia Krueger and friend Skip Johnson, grandchildren Becky Spann and husband Allen, Joshua Krueger and wife Amanda, Jennifer Wyman and husband Ben, Joe Renfrow, and great grandchildren Lillian, Lucy, Austin, and Stella.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ready McLarry, her parents, Ila Frances and Dewey Lee Riley, and her brothers Melvin Ray Riley, wife Polly, and Edwin Lee Riley, wife Diane. She will be missed and will remain in our hearts forever. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church (215 2nd St, Trenton, TX 75490). There will be a lunch at 12:30pm on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, followed by a service at 2:00pm. Burial will directly follow the service at Burns Cemetery (12779 TX-121, Trenton, TX 75490).

It seemed that little could tolerate a romantic relationship with her. Expecting David to be like all the others she quickly realized David was different. From the beginning David explained to Detra that he could not fix her past, but he would love her through anything the future holds. They married on May 12, 2004 in Leonard, TX. David and Detra never had children together but joined children from their previous marriages and brought Naomi Adkinson into the fold. Naomi became their daughter by heart and a caregiver for Detra when her health started failing. The last few years of Detra’s life were not ideal. By the grace of God she made peace with her past and put her faith in Jesus Christ.

Detra was a strong woman who accepted the war she had gone through. She realized her scars built the firm foundation in which the storms of life had little chance of knocking down. She was a mighty oak tree that would not break. Even in hard times Detra had a sparkle that would not dull but would only shine brighter. Many would describe Detra as a soldier. She kept getting back up and defeat was not an option. Her family finds great comfort knowing that she is no longer in pain and they will reunite with her again one day.

Fly High Beautiful Lady.

Survivors include husband, David Carnley; daughters, Naomi and Ashley; sister Gina and brother Sammy.
