Road Work updates for Week ending 1/25/2024 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. While we have all appreciated the rain it has caused havoc with the roads in Precinct One. Between poor drainage due to no bar ditches and crushed culverts many of the gravel roads are just a mess. The rain has allowed us to find culverts that were need-

ing cleaned out due to brush or just trash and we have been working all week to do clear up some of those issues. The team has been out everyday and have identified spots that need more work when the weather is better. Those will be worked on starting on Monday. Please be careful on the roads and watch for your employees as they will be working in odd places to fix drainage issues and the graders will be back on the roads. We have also scheduled twenty loads of rock for next week on some of the worst road areas. Please email me at dmcqueen@fanninco.net if you have a culvert that is crushed and allowing water to run around it and back into the road. We need to get these fixed as they are costing all of us money in lost gravel and poor roadways. Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One 903-965-7030

Hello everyone! What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning! There is a wonderful prayer that we read in Psalm 25:4-5. “Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.” This ought to be the prayer of our nation today, but, as you well know, as a nation, we’ve turned away from this. As I’ve said before, America has forgotten the godly foundation it was built upon. I love America, don’t get me wrong. Why things in our nation have gotten to where they are is beyond me, though. The only hope that we have is if we cling to the promise given to us in 2 Chronicles 7:14. This week I am reminded of another classic hymn penned by Frances Ridley Havergal in 1872. I hope you can say that this is your prayer. “Lord, speak to me that I may speak In living echoes of your tone. As you have sought, so let me seek Your erring children, lost and lone.”

The Importance of Bible Study
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Everyone will benefit by reading the Bible. The Bible has been published more than any book in history at an estimation of over five billion copies sold. The Bible has profoundly influenced the world in areas of politics and law, social responsibility, literature, education, and religion. However, many today do not understand the importance of Bible study. Paul penned this message; “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:1617). Since the ‘scriptures’, the Bible, was ‘God breathed’, then it is understood that because
“God, that cannot lie” (Titus 1:2), He inspired an infallible book, which is inerrant in all matters of Faith, Practice, History, and Scientific matters. The Old Testament, Genesis to Malachi, was “written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4). This is the reason Luke wrote concerning the Bereans, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). The Bereans considered the scriptures as the word of God. Each person has a responsibility to read and add knowledge of the Bible to their lives. Peter wrote, “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge” (2 Peter 1:5). Then Peter
rd
th
th
wrote, “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18). The Bible is the good news of salvation. Jesus said that we ought to “search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). John quotes Jesus in prayer to God the Father, in writing “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Paul wrote to Christians in Rome, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16). The Bible is of central importance in Christianity. It is the Holy text of God and is relatable to all generations. May everyone that names the name of Christ, read and study the Holy Book Divine.
The First Great Awakening
By Lyn Holly- Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church
On Sunday, February 18, at 5:00 PM at 7th and Main Baptist Church, believers of various denominations from all over Fannin County will gather to pray for revival and spiritual awakening. Last week, we examined the true meaning of biblical revival. It is so much more than a series of meetings with singing and preaching. The fires of true revival are characterized by a manifestation of the presence of God, confession and repentance of sin, a deep hunger for God and His Word, and a passionate burden for those without Christ. When true revival comes, it spreads, affects the spiritual and moral climate of entire regions. Our country has had two great awakenings in its history. The first one happened in 1734 in New England. All great moves of God can be traced back to a prayer meeting, even Pentecost in Acts 2! History records that in 1724, Count Nicolas Zinzendorf gathered a group of people to pray for the conversion of the lost. This prayer meeting actually continued 24 hours a day for 100 years! News of this prayer movement motivated a pastor named Jonathan Edwards to pray for the conversion of his congregation. He became burdened because many of the people attending his
church had never been born again. God put His hand on and began to use Edwards and another preacher named John Wesley in amazing ways. thousands of “church goers” were converted during the First Great Awakening. Records indicate at least onethird of the total population of the Colonies was converted to Christ through this sweeping revival! In a short period of time, over 30,000 residents of New England were born again and the revival fires spread throughout the Thirteen Colonies. This spiritual awakening fanned the flames of the movement to secure independence from England. Many respected historians claim America’s freedomspirit was born during a revival. Oh, how we need this kind
of spiritual awakening in our community and nation. I truly believe that true revival and spiritual awakening are required for the survival of our country. May we all begin to pray that God would send this kind of revival to Fannin County and beyond! The Psalmist writes in Psalm 85:46, “Restore us again, God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us. Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations? Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” Remember, a true spiritual awakening ALWAYS begins with God’s people praying together. Next week, we will examine the second Great Awakening in our nation’s history. Would you begin to pray with me, “Lord, would you do it again?”

Class 3A Leonard missed the boys' basketball playoffs in 2023 after making a historic run during the previous season. The Tigers last winter finished outside the postseason -- 4-8 in 11-3A play -- after reaching in 2022 their second regional quarterfinal appearance and winning their school's first district title in the boys' basketball since 1998. Leonard this season has returned to the thick of the 11-3A postseason chase, reunited with all-state guard Brett Nix, who in 2023 as a junior helped neighboring Wolfe City reach the Region II-2A semifinals. His play, joined with veterans Ethan Richardson, Russell Murphy, Jacoby LaCook, Jordan Barlagne and others, has the Tigers back in contention this season. Through Jan. 25, Leonard at 4-3 resided in the fourth-and-final playoffs spot in 11-3A, equalling already its 2023 district win total via a 57-49 victory over Bells on Jan. 23.

Trenton, DC softball ranked in TGCA Top 10 preseason polls
By Rich Hilliard
Class 2A Trenton and 1A Dodd City appeared in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's Top 10 preseason softball rankings for 2024, released Jan. 16. The Lady Tigers garnered the No. 6 spot in 2A -- coming off Trenton's first softball regional final trip since 2016 and third overall, best record at 29-2-1 and an undefeated district championship. Defending 2A State champion Weimar led the classification's poll which also included: No. 2 Como-Pickton, No. 3 Crawford, No. 4 Stamford, No. 5 Shiner, No. 7 Hawkins, No. 8 Ralls, No. 9 Windthorst, No. 10 Ganado.
Como-Pickton, the 2023 Region III-2A finalist, and Crawford equated the only teams last season to defeat Trenton -- the latter doing so in the Region II-2A final. Meanwhile, the Lady Hornets garnered the No. 10 spot in the 1A poll, coming off a second-straight State semifinalist effort -- and fifth State Tournament appearance in the last six complete softball seasons. Dodd City lost each time to the eventual 1A champion -- D'Hanis in 2022 and Hermleigh in 2023 -- after winning the 1A title in 2021. Defending 1A champion Hermleigh headed the classification's poll which also included: No. 2 D'Hanis, No.
3 Neches, No. 4 Gail Borden County, No. 5 Blum, No. 6 Leakey, No. 7 Northside, No. 8 Chester, No. 9 Brookeland. Defending 3A champion Coahoma led the classification's poll which included No. 3 Emory Rains and No. 8 Whitesboro -- the latter of which in 2023 accounted for the tie in Trenton's overall record and stopped Bonham's postseason return in the area round en route to the Region II-3A final round. The remainder of the 3A poll included: No. 2 Santa Gertrudis Academy, No. 4 Hallettsville, No. 5 Grandview, No. 6 Franklin, No. 7 Troy, No. 9 East Bernard, No. 10 Bushland.
Honey Grove's Serenity Canady (12) controls the ball on Jan. 19.

Warriors. The previously perennial playoffs participants -- 18 in a row, before the absence -- are assuring they equate that once again. Honey Grove, the 14-2A third-place qualifier in 2023, entered the last full week
of January on the verge of clinching a second-consecutive trip to the playoffs via the same district. Through Jan. 25, the Lady Warriors joined Sam Rayburn and Wolfe City atop the district at 8-2.

The Denison Daily News, July 31, 1878, reported: “The darkness increased rapidly when the eclipse had become nearly total; and at totality one could almost feel it fall upon him. At this moment a shout went up from the town that made the welkin ring [a loud

Will thousands of visitors come as predicted, or will locals be able to enjoy this remarkable event without the crowds of visitors? At any rate, prepare to get your glasses and to enjoy this remarkable experience.
9/12/23 Amen Fest Revival
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Historical Commission A total solar eclipse occurred on July 29, 1878 over much of North America, including Fannin County and most of Texas. There was much publicity in advance of this event in many newspapers. It was a major event in modern astronomy. “Americans in the 1870s were just as excited about an eclipse as we are today, and like us, were willing to travel thousands of miles to see it.” [Ruskin, Steve. America’s First Great Eclipse. 2017] Apparently many of the scientists and tourists decided to view the eclipse in
the Rocky Mountains. Astronomers from Europe and America traveled to the Rockies and “thousands of tourists also came, filling hotels and boarding houses, then spilling out into the streets and nearly parks, camping in tents and even wrapping themselves in blankets and sleeping on sidewalks or in livery stables.” Few newspapers from 1878 are available for Fannin County, but the Christian Messenger of August 7, 1878 reported: “On Monday evening of last week we took train at Bonham . . . as far as Sherman, and eclipse furnished us something to look at as we rode along in the cars. As we
reached Savoy, the chickens were just going to roost, and the tintinabaularions of the cow bells showed that the lowing herd thought that night had come and it was time to go home to the milk pens. The eclipse was about total, and the world wore a weird appearance.” This wonderful photo from the Portal to Texas History shows astronomers with various telescopes setting up to observe the eclipse near Fort Worth. According to the newspaper accounts, folks viewed the eclipse using “smoked glass”. “Every man, woman and child prepared smoked glass for the grand occurrence.”

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH BAILEY 309 W. CHURCH STREET, BAILEY, TX
Entrepreneur And Musician Becomes Worship Pastor At Local Church
At what point did you realize that you wanted to be a Worship Leader? I felt a calling to use my gifting in music for the Lord after my freshman year of college. I had gone on a summer missions project called Keynote where I got to play in a band and do live shows at military bases and prisons. We played alt rock covers and presented the Gospel during the show. I went back to college and changed my major to Music with a minor in Business. I began to pick up the acoustic guitar and work on playing and singing. It took a few years to get to the front of a band, but I eventually was given a chance to lead in my home church towards the end of my Senior year. I was getting good feedback and I enjoyed it so I started looking into it as a career. How has this decision impacted your life? The pursuit of leading worship as a career has taken me on adventures I could have never predicted. Straight out of college, I couldn’t find a fulltime position so did it parttime with and without pay while leaning into the world of coffee. While leading worship was my pursuit, the financial support came from the coffee industry - which I came to love and excel in. Leading worship led me to my last role as a part-time Worship Pastor at Epic Life Church in Seattle. In my time at Epic Life, I’ve grown as a worship leader and also as an entrepreneur. I got to help the church start a local coffee company that gave me opportunities to travel and build a business from scratch.
Interview with Justin Shaheen, Boyd Baptist’s New Associate Pastor Of Worship People who know me in Seattle know I lead worship and love a great cup of coffee. These last 12 years, I’ve experienced times of joy and struggle, my wife and I started our family, and I have grown as a strong leader in all these arenas. What was the deciding factor in accepting the position at Boyd Baptist Church? My wife and I began to feel a stirring from the Lord that our time in Seattle was coming to an end about a year ago. We’ve spent time calibrating on what that meant and what we would like to see for our family if we were to uproot. Boyd Baptist has met most, if not all, of these desires and prayers we had. We knew we would need to find a place where we could afford to live and eventually own a home. We also wanted to be close to family. Boyd Baptist and Bonham offered those opportunities, so I applied. The rest was up to the Lord to either close the door or leave it open. The door stayed open, so we are taking this step in faith that He is directing us here. What are some highlights of your life? Married to my wife Katy in 2006 - we met at, and both graduated from, Washington State University (20022007) Go Cougs! Father to 3 amazing kids: Isaac (10), Selah (7), Sam (2) Co-founded and built a thriving coffee business in Seattle (Pilgrim Coffee Truck in 2017 and Pilgrim Coffeehouse in 2021) Got to serve Pilgrim Coffee to East Asia missionaries at a conference in Singapore (2019) Traveling to Nicaragua
multiple times to minister and buy coffee directly from the farmers who work so hard to grow our favorite beverage Which people have had the most influence on your life, your career? I think I’m still able to say my parents have had the most influence in my life. Both have been Christians my entire life and raised me in a great church in Pullman, WA. That church brought me up in the faith and with musical opportunities as early as 7 years old. I began playing drums on the worship team in 1997 where I had my first leadership opportunity in 2007. In my time at Epic Life, I’ve been greatly influenced by
my pastor and friend, Keith, who has taught me a real understanding that with God all things are possible. It would be hard to list all the things I’ve learned while serving alongside him in Seattle. What are your favorite hobbies to do in your community? And with your family? Grabbing coffee with a friend will always be my favorite thing. I like to work out and be outside as much as possible. Our family loves to camp and go hiking. We also hope to dabble in some homesteading as we settle in the area. In what ways have you contributed to your
community in Seattle? The neighborhood where we’ve lived and ministered in is one of darkness: drug abuse and addiction, human trafficking, extreme homelessness, and violent crime. It has been the vision of Epic Life Church to see this neighborhood transformed by finding an abundant life in Christ. I believe the coffeehouse became a beacon of light for this neighborhood. We started a business that brought community and hospitality to a place that needed it desperately. I’m proud of what we built with Pilgrim Coffeehouse and hope to hear amazing things as it
1/30/24
continues to grow. What are your goals? Dreams? I’m looking forward to a season of working one job so I can put some more focus at home with my young kids. At Boyd Baptist, I hope to build a culture of worship that is multi-generational and Christ-centered. Boyd Baptist Church has an incredibly loving congregation and I hope to serve them well as my family grows with them. I would also say starting another coffee business is not out of the question in the future.

Press Release - The 19th Annual Justice Is Served raised about $72,000 In critical funds for the nonprofit Fannin County Children’s Center. More than 330 people attended this year’s event at the Multi-Purpose Complex in Bonham on November 11th, 2023. Bonham native Morgan Hopson returned to town to serve as the live auctioneer of the event. Hopson is an award-winning professional auctioneer who was excited to come home to help a local charity. The event generated over fifty sponsors, including title sponsor First United Bank. Alan McDonald, president of the Bonham branch of First United, spoke at the event and expressed his appreciation for all the services the Children’s Center provides to vulnerable children. Children’s Center Board President Bill
Wilson welcomed guests to the event. He spoke of the importance of the services provided by the center to children who have been abused and neglected. He also expressed appreciation to all the staff, board, volunteers, partner agencies and donors who make the center’s mission possible. The Children’s Center’s Executive Director Kim Skidmore also welcomed guests to the event and thanked them for their support. She told the story of a mother who was helped at the center that week. This mother was struggling with drug addiction, had just lost custody of her children to CPS and was homeless. Center staff spent time helping her find shelter and other services she needed, so she can get back on the road to recovery with an ultimate goal of being reunited with her children. More than one hundred items were auc-

tioned off in the live and silent auctions. Judge Blake’s famous turtle brownies sold for $600 to kick off the successful live auction. Many guests raised their paddles to donate to the first successful “fund a need” effort. These donations will help provide a wide variety of support services to children, youth and families recovering from abuse and neglect. Guests also enjoyed a dinner that was catered by Feast on This and served up by local judges, police chiefs and others in the justice field. The Fannin County Children’s Center has been serving children who have been abused and neglected for more than 30 years. The nonprofit’s programs include CASA, Children’s Advocacy Center, Rainbow Room and child abuse prevention efforts. To learn more, go to www.FanninCCC.org or call (903) 583-4339.

In response to the article in the Jan 16, 2024 edition of The Leader entitled, “When the Law of Moses was Taken Away:” Our “Letter to the Editor” section is composed of letters submitted to The Fannin County Leader by our readers. The views expressed in these letters are not necessarily the views of The Fannin County Leader. Political letters must be paid for, in advance. To submit a letter, please e-mail fcleditor2020@gmail. com. It is our goal to be fair and neutral relating to political issues. We welcome Letters to the Editor on topics that would be of concern and interest to the community. The decision to publish is left to the Editor and Management.
Letter to the Editor 2 Peter 3:16 gives a dire warning about Paul's letters, saying they are “...hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction.” One must ask, untaught and unstable in WHAT? What did Paul know, that if his readers DIDN'T know, would cause them to twist what he was saying into something he wasn't? Paul answers this in Acts 22:3 by saying he “was brought up at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the Law.” Gamaliel was the “Harvard” of Law schools back then, who's education commenced after the student memorized the entire Law (from Gen thru Deut) by the age of 13. In other words, Paul held a Master's Degree in the Law, and unless one knows the Law as intimately as he did, it's IMPOSSIBLE to correctly understand Paul's writings. For 26 years and counting I've been learning and living by the Law (not to BE saved, but BECAUSE I'm saved.) And there's things Paul wrote that I still don't get. So, until one has a STRONG understanding of what Moses wrote, PLEASE heed Peter's warning and skip the parts that SEEM to say the Law is done away. They're doing more harm than good. Instead, focus on things like 1 Cor 5:6-8 and 11:17-34 where Paul rebukes Gentile believers for not observing Passover properly. The Corinthians were bringing spiritual leaven to the Lord's Feast of Redemption by getting drunk and shoving each other around to eat first. He said that's why many of them were sick and dying. Note that the Corinth church observed Passover and Paul didn't rebuke them for it. He rebuked them because their obedience wasn't from the heart, or the Spirit. They
were treating the most important meal they could ever eat within the faith in an irreverent and cavalier manner. Consider these 4 things Jesus said about the Law of Moses: #1- Matt 23:2-4 “The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do..” Moses' seat was an honorary stone seat in synagogues for one (chosen by lot among the elders) to sit and publicly read from the Law on Sabbath. While in this seat, it wasn't permitted him to make comments, interpretations or opinions. He could only read the Scroll. Therefore, Jesus tells us to obey EVERYTHING they read. (Moses' seat is also alluded to in Acts 15:21 after James suggested the minimum requirements for Gentiles coming into the faith. He said, “For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”) Jesus continues in verse 3, “...but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.” Jesus' #1 complaint against the Pharisees was that they did NOT follow what Moses said. They followed the Oral Law, which is a whole slew of commandments and traditions THEY made up to “protect” the original commandments. They call them “fences” and are observed by the Jews to this very day. #2- Matt 5:19 “Whoever breaks the least of these commandments, and teaches others so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven...” This teeny-tiny commandment isn't among the first 10.

The sages of Israel say that the least commandment is Deut 22:6-7 where we're told not to take a mother bird with her eggs or young on the same day. Interestingly, this instruction is placed among a seemingly haphazard group of laws that bounce all over the place. But in truth, they are ALL about one very powerful subject, of which the word is never used: KINDNESS. They are in Deuteronomy 21:10- 25:19 #3- John 5:46 “...For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” Jesus and Paul preached the Gospel using Moses and the Prophets (Luke 24:27, Acts 26:22, and 28:23) because it is the ONLY way to believe in the Hebrew (not Greek) Messiah, who has MANY names: the Creator, the Rock, the Pillar, the Glory of the Lord, the great “I Am,” the Angel of the Covenant, the Right Hand, Son and Lamb of God, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End, the Savior, Redeemer and King of Israel. And He says in Luke 16:31, “....If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise up from the dead.” The New Testament authors NEVER meant their letters to equal, much less SUPERCEDE Moses and the Prophets. When they mention “Scripture” they are referring to Moses and the Prophets, not their own (or each other's) letters. So consider again 2 Tim 3:16 “All Scripture (Moses and the Prophets) is given by Inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” And that includes the instructions for the Altar Service.... #4- In Matt 23:16-22 Jesus bashes the scribes and Pharisees for their contempt of the Temple. In verse 19 He says, “...For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?” Religious men say the gift is greater, but Jesus says the ALTAR is greater because it sanctifies the gift. This is also true of the Greatest Gift
given to us at the cross. Yes, His death was SANCTIFIED by the altar of God. How? Mark 15:38-39 says a Roman soldier standing by Jesus saw the Veil rip. The only place on Earth where a Gentile could see the Veil of the Most Holy Place was the Mount of Olives. He looked across the Kidron Valley, through the Eastern Gate, OVER the altar, through the doorway into the Sanctuary, all the way back to the Veil. That means: our Heavenly Father, being in the Most Holy Place was looking back through the Sanctuary, over the top of the altar and He sees His Son lifted up over the altar. That altar is what SANCTIFIED the New Covenant sacrifice of the Lamb of God. Without it, our Father wouldn't have accepted Him. Jesus' ministry, death, burial and resurrection were all according to what the Law required of Him. No more, no less. If one thing had been missing, He would have been disqualified. That's how perfect God's plan is. That's how perfectly Jesus filled the Law up full of meaning (fullfill). So how could He “nail to the cross” the VERY thing that was SANCTIFYING Him? Nay! Remember Peter's warning and that“..sin is the transgression of the Law,” and “the wages (the penalty) of sin is death.” Jesus nailed to the cross the DEATH PENALTY the Law requires for disobedience. I love how King David sums up the Law in Psalms 19:7-11: “The Law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul. The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever. The judgments of the Lord are altogether true and righteous. More to be desired than gold- yes, than much fine gold. Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.” Paid for by: Dawn McGee, Bonham, TX

Pruning Dead Plant Material Can Cause More Harm Through Winter
Adam Russell Texas A&M AgriLife. A hard freeze can make plants an ugly eyesore in a landscape or garden. A citrus tree showing dead brown leaves after freezing weather. But practice patience when it comes to freeze-damaged plants, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife expert. Michael Arnold, Ph.D., director of The Gardens at Texas A&M University and professor of landscape horticulture in the Department of Horticultural Sciences at the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Bryan-College Station, said warmer daytime temperatures may give gardeners the itch to get outside and prune back damaged leaves and clean up
dead plant material following a hard freeze, but they should resist the urge. Plants can be damaged by temperatures once they reach 32 degrees, but a hard freeze – 28 degrees or below for four hours or more – can sting coldhardy plants and kill those that are less cold tolerant. Whether a hard freeze hits in November or in February, homeowners and gardeners should consider their local average final frost date before any cleanup. “There is a tendency to want to spruce things up, but if we do that too quickly, we can predispose the plants to even more freeze damage,” he said. “My advice is to be patient and learn to live with ugly.” Patience best after freeze damage

he said. Dead tissue will be apparent when the plant breaks dormancy in the spring, and waiting will ensure plants with live tissue recover. At that point, pruning is not detrimental to the plant’s long-term recovery. Arnold said gardeners should wait until the threat of frost has passed for the location, which could be the first few weeks in January in the Rio Grande Valley into March in North Texas. He suggests pruning around typical local “pruning” dates but said gardeners could act a little early if the 10-day forecast shows temperatures will stay above freezing.
3/23/21
Cold-sensitive plants like palm and banana trees or woody herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses may look dead or dying after a hard freeze, but Arnold said it is best to give them time. Pruning too early can cause more damage in two ways. First, it removes dead plant material that can help insulate living tissue from later freezing temperatures, and it may also stimulate new growth before the threat of frost has passed. Warmer days can activate buds below any premature pruning cut, Arnold said. Stimulating new growth that is then exposed to freezing temperatures will inflict more damage to the plant. Plants that look dead may recover,

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 50 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. The lake is on the rise due to recent rainfall. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 49-52 degrees; 1.28 feet below pool. Bass fishing is slow due to the cold weather. Fish seem to be suspended over mid range water. Suspending jerk baits or mid running crankbaits are fair in 10 feet around channels. Spinnerbaits reeled slowly should also work in 7-10 feet of water. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 50 degrees; 1.70 feet below pool. Freezing temperatures have kept anglers off the water, but expect the pattern to hold steady. Crappie are 2030 feet deep on brush and condos biting minnows and 1/16⅛ ounce jigs. Suspended crappie are hunting threadfin shad, they will have little arches on your 2D, under the clouds of shad. Fish at the depths you see them at. Otherwise look for them in and around submerged structures. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 45 degrees; 0.96 feet below pool. Few anglers on the water due to the cold front. After the brutally cold weather, fish slowly and be sure to have patience in the tackle box. Report by Jim Walling, Ucatchem Guide Service. Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 52 degrees; 0.05 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni has settled into a solid winter pattern especially following the arctic blast the last couple of days. Expect fishing to slow as the waters have rapidly cooled off. As of right now the hybrid stripers and white bass bite has been decent. We are seeing fish on the main lake suspended with giant schools of threadfin shad. Presenting artificial lures to these fish is challenging but when done correctly fish are being put in the boat. The trophy catfish bite has been decent. Fish are being caught in the 40 foot range on fresh cut gizzard shad. The crappie bite has been the most reliable of all the fish currently. Bridge pylons and deep timber have consistently put fish in the boat. Minnows and jigs are working equally as well. Depth ranges have been 20-30 feet. The eater catfish bite has been slow. The largemouth bass bite has also been slow. Report by Captain Michael Littlejohn, Lake Tawakoni Guide Service. Texoma GOOD. Water normal stain; 38-41 degrees; 0.98 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is slow due to the sudden drop in water temperatures and weather. Catching bigger fish on structure with swimbaits in 15-25 feet of water off main lake points and humps with stumps using 5 inch glow paddle tails on a 1 ounce jig head. Crappie fishing is slow, finding fish that are not active around docks and brush in 10-20 feet of water. Target with jigs with a tipped minnow. Catfish are good drifting cut shad on flats near the rivers in 15-25 feet of water for bigger fish. The deep marinas full of shad will be full of catfish under them also. Fish the wave breaks and no wake zone areas. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are slow due to the water temperatures. Fish the backs of rocky coves on sunny days using jerkbaits, and slow crankbaits in 5-15 feet of water. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.

Retirement freed her to care for and spend time with them often. She forever became known as “Kakee” and introduced them to Kakee-kisses, Kakee-cakes, Kakee-burgers, and her Kakee-lac. One of their favorite activities was WebKinz, which Kakee continued to collect. She also enjoyed reading, doing all kinds of crafts, making cards, and keeping her home open to preachers and missionaries from all over the world as well as Jimmy’s fishing buddies from Arkansas. Kathy never met a stranger and was known to be hospitable, encouraging and a friend to all. Of most importance to Kathy was her relationship to Jesus Christ. She was baptized into His body at 12 years of age and spent the rest of her life serving Him in His Kingdom. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jimmy Newhouse of Honey Grove, one daughter, Stephanie Ownby and husband Mark of Murphy, one son, Jimmy Newhouse II and wife Susan of Rockwall, granddaughter Natalie Clevenger and husband, Luke, granddaughter Trinity Ownby, grandson Trey (Jimmy Newhouse III), grandson Trenton Ownby, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mark and Deidra Newhouse of Reno, four nieces and two nephews. Memories ...... When we were 18, my brother Hez said, "Let's go visit Rex's girl!" There were four of us. Betty lived two miles from us. We drove Dad's car. They didn't have any electricity and had gone to bed. Hez said, "Let's wake them up by throwing clods on the roof." The dirt road had plenty of clods. Each of us got four clods and threw the first one as high as we could, then not so high so that 16 clods hit their roof about the same time. (Betty said later they thought the chimney had slid down the
roof.) We ran away laughing. Hez said, "Let's do it again." We didn't see Betty's father, Ted behind a tree with a shotgun. Later, he said he started to shoot one (me) close to him, but he saw three running and wanted to shoot three more than one, so he shot at the others. I ran to the car, but they didn't show up. Soon, a flashlight hit me; I thought I was dead. "Is that you Rex?" In a voice about to cry, "Yes sir." "You boys shouldn't do what
makes others do what they shouldn't do!" I drove home without seeing the others. (They stayed hidden because they thought Ted might be in the car.) Hez was the only one hit. Mother got bird shot out of his leg with tweezers. We weren't in trouble, but Dad was. "See, all your trick stories are going to get boys killed!" I thought if anyone had to be shot, the right target had been hit. Paid for by Rex Ray
