Land Donated to Fannin County Children’s Advocacy Center 07/02/19
By Christina Brown Sandy Barber and Steve Collida with the Fannin
County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) were excited to make the announcement on Thursday, January 2, 2020
that Roy and Jan Reimer has donated an 8 acre tract of land for a new children’s center. The land is located
on Albert Broadfoot and Lee Street (across from the Warrior Baseball Fields and old Bonham Golf Club). The
dream of a new children’s center is now becoming reality as all the pieces to the puzzle are starting to fall into place. The next steps, among many, will be to find an architect and begin fundraising plans. The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) provides a neutral, child-friendly agency that facilitates a multi-disciplinary team approach in the prevention, investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse to bring the offenders to justice and promote healing for the victims. Correction: Courthouse Fire Article Published Dec. 31, 2019 By Christina Brown The correct date of the courthouse fire is December 31, 1929 which would make it the 90th anniversary of the fire. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 Old Words for New Times Jeremiah 6:16 Proverbs 119:105 Proverbs 16:17
By Bro. Bill Beasley

We have just crossed the threshold of the New Year. We have never been this way before. We will never pass this way again. The year 2019 is finished. The year 2020 is before us. There will be new experiences to face, new problems to solve, new testing times to undergo, and new
difficulties to overcome. Tomorrow will offer new opportunity for service and there will be new blessings to enjoy. It has been said that we cannot sail today’s waters on yesterday’s winds. On this past December 28 I celebrated my 96th birthday. I am moving on in my 97th year. The times are new but the words we need to hold dear have a ring of the old. A good verse to remember is Jeremiah 6:16 – “Thus

says the LORD, “Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” The Bible is the book we need as our guide. It has directions for every day. It provides comfort for every sorrow – and a solution for every problem. We have this Book. We need to read it. We need to believe it. Proverbs 119:105 reads: “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path”. Again from Proverbs 16:17 (NASB) the writer pens these words “the
highway of the upright is to and claim His strength. I lay depart from evil; He who aside those things that beset me and talk to Jesus who is watches his way preserves 4/21/15 the author and the finisher of his life.” As I begin the New Year my faith. with you let me share this thought. Elect Dale
McQueen
For Commissioner, Fannin County Precinct 1 On March 3, 2020, the citizens of Precinct 1 can elect a new Republican county commissioner for Fannin County. I ask for your vote to be that commissioner based on what goals I would like to see happen in the county, my proven track record of improving and growing two important entities in the county, and my ability to work with others across the county. Four goals that I see as important to the counties future growth are: 1) Balanced Budget for the County – just like your budget we should not plan to spend more than we take in each year, 2) Program to Improve our County Roads – just throwing more rock on a road after a heavy rain is not a long term solution, 3) Improve Efficiency of County Offices – technology is used everyday to improve our lives and save us money, we need the same ideas in our county government, 4) Plan For Expected Countywide growth – if we truly want to grow we have to work on our water and infrastructure planning at the county level. Over the next four weeks I will write an article about each of the above goals and how I think we as a community can grow and thrive without losing what brings many people to Fannin County and keeps them here once they arrive. In the past 7 years as the executive director of the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce and the manager of the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex both entities have grown significantly in their size and what they give back to the community. They both have also been successful in making enough income to improve the events they put on each year and in the case of the complex to improve the facility with over $250,000 dollars of capital improvements. I also bring management experience from jobs at Mary Kay Cosmetics, Safety-Kleen, and having run my own construction firm for 10 years. Having worked for the Fannin County Leader for three years covering events across the county I understand that while we may want to go it alone as a city or community that is not the type of attitude that will allow us to grow as a county. What benefits one area of the county benefits all areas of the county. As an example: While growth in one area of the county can benefit the tax base for the county, this in turn can help the county support other areas of the county with better infrastructure than they currently have. I ask for your vote on March 3, 2020 or early vote starting February 18th. Thank you, Dale McQueen Paid for by Dale McQueen, Commissioner for Precinct 1, Dale McQueen - Treasurer

Brown ground beef and drain. Return beef to large pot and add other ingredients, plus 1 to 2 cans water. Simmer at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with cornbread or over rice. Is there a drug problem in Fannin County? It was recently said that we have a “small” drug problem. This isn’t the same county that residents knew 40 years ago and it certainly doesn’t have the same law enforcement needs. The answer is yes. We don’t have a small drug problem, we are just like any other county in Texas. We have a drug problem. We have a growing drug problem. We have a changing drug problem. We primarily see meth in Fannin County and THC wax oil and edibles are the newer drugs we are seeing and heroin is also beginning to resurface. The marijuana that we see is a new generation that is five times more potent than standard cannabis. The majority of drug cases we file are on residents of Fannin County but we do pursue pipelines and wholesale sources that are responsible for the flow of drugs in to our county. The bigger question one should ask is what are we doing about
it and is it effective. When I took office on January 1, 2017 there was one Narcotics Officer for the county. He had a good working relationship with Bonham Police Department and I, along with Chief Bankston, have tried to ensure we continue that relationship to address the drug problems throughout the county. A Narcotics Officer is a specialized field of law enforcement. They must be proficient in the Health and Safety Code, recognize drugs and keep on track with drug dealer techniques. Processing intelligence information that is received is key to success in fighting the growing drug problem. Investigating and identifying drug dealers is a time consuming process and must be done in a way that will result in a prosecution to ever remove the dealers from the street. In the last 12 months, we now have 2 narcotics officers which has significantly resulted in more drug arrests and seizures. Common sense should tell you that more investigators will mean more arrests being made and more cases being solved. From January 2017 to December 2019, we have opened 170 drug investigations that resulted in 104 felony drug arrests and 247 felony drug charges being filed with the District Attorney’s Office. We have seized 15 vehicles including cars and motorcycles. We have also seized 2 residences for a combined value of approximately $200,000.00. In the last year we have removed a large amount of drugs from the streets of Fannin County to include the following: Marijuana and THC oil for a street value of $1.5 million 600 hits of LSD with a street value of $20,000.00, 14 pounds of meth with a street value of $60,000.00 3000 grams of various prescription pills with a street value of $25,000.00 12 ounces of cocaine with a street value of $10,000.00 The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators have participated with several Federal DEA investigations that began in Fannin County and received approximately $5,000.00 from asset sharing from these investigations. Approximately $80,000.00 in drug money has been seized by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office. I sat down with the Criminal Investigations supervisor and discussed the needs of his department and what I could do to make them more efficient and effective. Having been a narcotics officer myself and participating in many drug raids, I understand the needs of this department. We put together a plan along with a list of items needed. The technology that has been added to the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office since January 1, 2017 is state of the art and of the highest quality in North Texas, exceeding our surrounding counties. Officers from other larger agencies have stated they do not have many of the capabilities that we have now. This equipment has been purchased without using tax payer money and without utilizing the budgeted money set by the Commissioner’s Court. With the increased drug activity and changing times we are faced with as a county, state and nation, we started a Special Response Team (SRT). The Fannin County Sheriff’s Office now has 3 Deputies who have been trained during 2019 in SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) and we have plans to get 3 more Deputies trained during 2020. The drug problem in Fannin County isn’t going to just go away, it should not be minimized, it can’t be ignored and we must face it head on and be prepared at all times. I have Narcotics Officers who take their job very serious and I have the experience and leadership to work with them to ensure we have the resources necessary to tackle this problem on a daily basis. As your Sheriff, I am an experienced law enforcement officer with over 26 years of TCOLE documented service time. I have 2184 documented TCOLE training hours. I am a Master Peace Officer with the experience in Jail Administration, Dispatch and Patrol to move this agency forward to meet the demands before us. As your Sheriff, the needs of all the citizens of Fannin County is always my priority. I have lived in Fannin County every single day since I moved here in 1992. I look forward to going to work every single day and I deal with the day to day issues of the office but more importantly, I look to the future with a plan to be prepared for the changes that will be necessary to keep Fannin County a safe place for our families. I respectfully request your vote on March 3, 2020 to continue serving as your Fannin County Sheriff. December 1st marked the start of my eighth (8th) year here with the City of Bonham & BEDCo and since completing my first full year of service in 2013 it has been my pleasure to share with all of you what I have rather subjectively compiled as Steve’s Annual List of Bonham/BEDCo’s Top Ten Development Accomplishments. I do this as a means of gauging how far I believe we have come in the past 12 months and as a compass to ensure we remain true to our course for the journey ahead in the coming year. Throughout the year those ‘on the bridge and at the helm’ are constantly making necessary adjustments to our course & speed to offset the impact of any number of unforeseen variables.
With Fannin County’s unemployment rate running at historic lows for more than 30 months now (varying from 2.8% to 3.4%, let’s call the average monthly rate 3.2%) coupled with a modest but steady growth in the size of the workforce, and a consumer price index increasing 2.1% by almost any measure we/Bonham-Fannin County have enjoyed very fair sailing weather in 2019 and are very well positioned for an even better 2020! So, without further ado here is my 2019 list: #10 You didn’t see this but BEDCo (in close coordination with City and County leadership) responded to 2 freight -rail leads valued @ more than $70 million in new capital investment, 300+ potential jobs and within weeks responded to yet another $20 million project leads ~ three (3) projects were all in play collectively worth

It is exciting to see Fannin County blazing the same trail! As our forefathers found out, new adventures are not always easy, but always rewarding. The Fannin County Courthouse is currently in one of my favorite stages..stripped to the bare bones of another generation. You are not only able to view the original architectural design and workmanship; but, the thought and engineering that went into saving your courthouse after it sustained fire damage in 1929 and the footprints of history left by the 1965 modernization. If you have any doubt your County is on the right pathway, I invite you to Hopkins County and I will personally give you a tour of our Courthouse and share with you pictures of how it was (through all stages of restoration). You will be able to see the impact the restored Hopkins County Courthouse is having on our tax base and the quality of life we can offer our citizens by enticing new retail businesses and manufacturing companies to our county. Blessings to you all…. Beth Wisenbaker
VICE
As a retired Hopkins County Commissioner, I was given the opportunity to tour the FANNIN COUNTY COURTHOUSE on Monday, December 2nd. I love your Courthouse… even in its present condition and I admire your Commissioners Court (previous & current & future) for taking on this challenge. Because to restore History and map out a new future for the citizens you represent, is a leap of faith. I was blessed with the opportunity of serving the citizens of Hopkins County from January 1997 to January 2017 and during this time period we restored the Hopkins County Courthouse and restored our square to a vibrant tourist and community destination. The restoration was an experience that will not be forgotten. Budget was always a huge concern along with dealing with the expectations of the Texas Historical Commission. Seeing our Hopkins County Courthouse, restored to its glory of 1895 was definitely worth every up and down and delay we experienced as a Commissioners Court!

Leonard junior guard Nakita Harris (11) looks to drive past Bonham senior Emma Bounds (10) on Dec. 17. Photos by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard January means the start of district basketball for most Fannin County girls and boys teams -- and the resumption of it for others. Before playing in holiday tournaments and non-district action during winter break, girls teams from 23-1A and 10-3A in December started toward potential postseason berths with league games. Dodd City, a three-peat state
finalist, began its quest for an eighth-consecutive undefeated district title -- and 10th-straight postseason -- with a 2-0 start in 23-1A play. The Lady Hornets, ranked No. 2 in 1A, defeated Ector, 81-20, at home and won, 773, at Yantis. Ector and Fannindel also garnered 23-1A wins. The host Lady Eagles topped Savoy, 49-29; the Lady Falcons defeated Yantis, 49-44. Ector, the 23-1A 1A runnerup last season, looks to make a

The Lady Eagles have been an area finalist the previous three seasons. Fannindel vies for a postseason trip this season after not fielding a varsity girls basketball team last year. Beforehand, the Lady Falcons advanced to the area round in 2018 after reaching the bi-district round in 2017 -- both times as a district third-place qualifier. Savoy competes this season in pursuit of its first postseason since 2014’s bi-district trip after
a third-place finish in district play. Meanwhile, Leonard also started 10-3A action at 2-0. The Lady Tigers opened district play with a win at Bonham, 55-38,
Dodd City while battling cancer. He had previously served that same basketball season as a boys assistant at Dodd City. “Our goal is to win the district championship and make the regional tournament,” said Stephenson on the day he first served as head coach for the Lady Hornets. “We mainly want to get better every day,” he said, “and kind of pick up where Ashley left off.” Dodd City, which had a 1-0 district record that season when he assumed the helm, won its second of now sevenconsecutive undefeated district titles and made its fourthstraight area-round in 2014 to end his first season. The Lady Hornets reached the regional semifinals (2015) and regional final (2016) during his first two full seasons at the helm. The last three seasons, Dodd City has advanced to the 1A state championship game -only stopped each time from adding a title to Stephenson’s resume by perrennial champion Nazareth -- running the Lady Hornets’ postseason streak to nine-consecutive years. Each of the last four seasons, Dodd City has won 32 or more games -- including a 37-2 mark in 2018.
and a 49-40 home victory against Whitewright. Leonard looks for a ninthconsecutive postseason, after winning a 10-3A fourth-place
play-in last season to extend the streak. Bonham hopes to reach its first postseason since 2004’s run to the regional semifinals.

Other first-team selections for Fannindel, the 1-1 district runner-up qualifier, included: junior Brandon

next to the fisherman. The fisherman had a red bag that was open and in plain view there was a fish tail sticking out. The warden identified the angler and checked for a valid fishing license. The angler said all of the fish were his and said they were white bass. The game warden explained to him the difference between white bass and striped bass. The angler had a total of 7 undersize striped bass measuring 15-16 inches. Four of them were in plastic bags, wrapped with black electrical tape, and stuffed in his bag. Rep. Ratcliffe statement on the Death of Qassem Soleimani
WASHINGTON – Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) released the following statement on the death of Qassem Soleimani, the head of the terrorist organization known as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force: “The Trump administration was bold and resolute in taking out a designated terrorist personally responsible for the death of hundreds of American soldiers, sailors and marines. Qassem Soleimani was a terrorist who was killed, not in Iran, but in Iraq, where he orchestrated the latest attack on our U.S. Embassy and was actively planning more attacks to kill additional American forces and civilians. I support the President’s decisive directive to punish the killing of Americans and commend the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who carried out the order to deter future Iranian terrorist attack plans.”
