Acts 20:35 (NKJV)

My last student pastorate was with the New Hope Baptist Church near Mount Vernon, Texas in Franklin County. This was in 19501952. As I evaluate my ministry there, the one

The Blessings of Giving

thing I remember above all was my challenge to the congregation to begin services to the community on an every weekend basis. God had blessed the community with the discovery of oil and the development of the Tidewater Oil Field. The people were learning how to live with their new found wealth. I had a deep conviction since God had so richly blessed them that they needed to acknowledge His goodness by becoming more faithful in their giving. This in turn would enable the church to become a fulltime pastorate.

Material blessings are only one way that God has given to us. The joy of family, the helpfulness of friends, the Bible! That comforts us, His Son that saves, and the church that provides worship opportunities - all of

Fairview Cemetery Annual Meeting

these and countless others ring out the blessings of His giving. Add to them the blessings that we receive when we give back to Him. We are truly a blessed people.

Most of the words of Jesus are found in the four Gospels, but there is one sentence from the lips of Jesus that appears in Acts 20:35 “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Why is it more blessed to give than to receive? Dr. Allen Reed makes his comment “When we receive, we are acting like ourselves; but when we give, we are acting like God. Receiving is us-like. Giving is Christ-like.”

There are many Beatitudes in the Bible, but this is the only one that uses the phrase “more blessed”. Don’t let this be a forgotten Beatitude in your life.

Romans 12:18

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. 17.Discussion, consideration and action regarding notification letter to leasee at future Fannin County Justice Center of termination of lease

– Commissioner Precinct 3: Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow started the comments by noting a citizen from Telephone had called in to ask who the Leasee was. After his remarks, the first of six citizens came to the podium to make the case for Nautilus Fitness Center to be allowed to continue doing business at its current location. Tamara Kennedy, one of the owner/operators of the Nautilus Fitness Center at 2235 N Center Street in Bonham, first noted how they have been serving this area for twenty years (ten at the current location) before describing all the services they offer, many of which greatly benefit the senior citizen population. She described classes that have helped clients recover from surgeries, reduce illnesses, normalize blood pressure and reduce medications. Offering strength, cardio, balance and flexibility training, she stressed their services have been a source of emotional support, encouragement and social interaction for many in the area and made an impassioned plea for construction plans to be arranged in such a manner that would allow the center to continue in the space for as long as possible. The next five speakers would reiterate the importance of the services with a physical therapist noting other gyms do not offer the rehabilitative services offered by this center and another client of the gym adding that due to the uniqueness of their services, not just local citizens come to the Center but folks from surrounding areas attend who in turn patronize other local businesses. Though different in its delivery; the message from the six speakers was the same, allow the Nautilus Fitness Center to continue its vital services to the community at its current location.

Commissioner Lane was the first to respond to the petitioners noting that the Court was not trying to destroy this business. She stated that the rumors that Nautilus was being evicted today were false and went on to describe construction plans for a building that will house all the County offices that are currently scattered across the area and how that will benefit the county. She stated she understood the importance of therapeutic services, sharing an incident where a relative underwent physical therapy after a stroke (at another facility), but noted that the court must make difficult decisions that aren’t always popular with everyone.

She cited safety issues that will be of a concern once construction begins at the site. Commissioner Magness then stated that the decisions made by the court are not personal but that their job is to represent all the citizenry of Fannin County and went on to explain the necessity behind getting all the county offices in a centralized loca tion. He apologized for the inconvenience this decision will be causing those with the Nautilus Fitness Center. Judge Moore then described a chaotic construction scene that would create safety is sues at that site and expressed a sincere hope that the center will find another location. After more discussion about the construction plans, it was noted that despite inaccurate assumptions, there would not be an immediate termination of the lease as it was the plan of the court to terminate the lease as of January 31, 2023, due to plans for the construc tion of the Justice Center to begin February/March of 2023. Commissioner Lane then made the motion to send a notification letter to Nauti lus of ending their lease at the location of the future Jus tice Center on January 31st of 2023. Commissioner Mag ness seconded the motion which passed.

18. Discussion, consider ation and action to direct the District Attorney to prepare the janitorial bid in contract form – County Judge: Shonda Magness explained how the scope of work was not previously de tailed thus creating the need to specify what is expected

in a cleaning contract. Com missioner Lane then made the motion to direct the DA to prepare the janitorial bid in contract form with Com missioner Magness second ing the motion which passed.

19. Comments by Coun ty Commissioners and County Judge: Commis sioner Lane voiced her ap preciation to all who came to today’s meeting especially those in support of Nautilus and expressed her hope that they can find another loca tion as she believes it to be a beneficial business for the county. She commented on the road groomer ma chinery’s first-time usage, thanked Commissioner Mag ness for helping cut Precinct 1 trees while her tree cutter is down, reminded all about the burn ban and wished all a good week. Commissioner Magness commented on how some decisions a commis sioner must make is not al ways easy but hopes people will realize their actions are those done with what is best for the county and wished all a good week. Judge Moore

also reminded all about the burn ban and how with the dry conditions it is just not safe to conduct burns. He also noted that Commission ers Self and Lackey are at a conference and commended Fannin County Purchaser Shonda Magness for saving the county money. Regard ing the Nautilus Fitness Cen ter, Judge Moore stated the decision made today was not done lightly as there is no question as to the vibrancy and purpose of that business, but after much deliberation, they decided the best action was to give as much time as possible for the business to relocate. He once again cited the county’s need for a centralized location for all the county’s offices and safe ty during construction be ing the main factors in their decision. He expressed the hope that their decision gives enough time to allow sup porters of Nautilus to assist with relocation needs.

20. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 11:18 a.m.

Press Release - Three local people recently completed training and were sworn-in to become volunteer CASA advocates for children in foster care. The Honorable Judge Lauri Blake of the 336th District Court administered the oath to the new vol unteers. New child advocates include Cathy Naylor, Star Breece and Taryn Nejtek.

“We are so excited to have these three new CASA advocates join our team,” said Julie Luton, CASA Program Director with the Fannin County Children’s Center, which includes the local CASA program. “All of them have dedicated themselves to work the 32 hours of training it takes to be a CASA volunteer. All three are now trained and ready to help children from hard places. Now their CASA journey be gins! And as Gandhi said “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.””

Pictured L to R: Julie Luton, Cathy Naylor, Judge Lauri Blake, Star Breece, Taryn Nejtek, Katie King.

In the year ending August 31, 2022, CASA volunteers logged in 2,963 hours serv ing 66 children in foster care. During the same year, when CASA closed out cases 23% were reunified with their families, 41% went to live permanently with relatives, 32% went to non-relatives and 5% aged out of care.

All volunteers completed an intensive training class which prepares them to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children who have been removed from their home due to abuse and neglect. The district judge appoints CASA volunteers to serve as the Guardian ad Litem for each child who has been placed in the state’s custody. In that role, CASA advocates investigate the child’s situation, prepare written reports to the court and advocate for the child’s best interest in court hearings and other settings. CASA also advocates and monitors to ensure that all educational, medical, mental health and other needs are met.

CASA is one of several programs for abused and neglected children that are operated by the Fannin County Children’s Center. The next new CASA vol unteer training will likely be in January or February 2023. Other volunteer opportunities are available now at the Children’s Center. Reversing Recent Results: Savoy benefiting in 2022 from 2021 JH success, new football staff’s offensive, defensive changes

SAVOY -- No players re main on the roster from Class 1A-I Savoy’s last football postseason team.

Almost four years have passed since the Cardinals’ 5-4 bi-district effort in 2018 -at the time, Savoy’s sixth and final advance in seven years of consistently having a six-man football program.

Whether the Cardinals will return to the six-man playoffs this fall has yet to be deter mined -- District 10-1A-I play not starting until Oct. 21.

But Garret Hall, one of only two seniors on the Cardinals’ 13-man roster -- which also includes five freshmen -- wel comes their 4-2 start -- already equating Savoy’s most wins in a single season since said last

advance.

“It’s a really awesome feel ing,” said Hall, a fullback, safety and line backer in his fifth year as a student at Sa voy ISD.

“I like the new coaches,” he said. “Our practices are more intense.”

“We got a lot of new coach es,” said junior Kody Cates, in his first year as a running back and linebacker at Savoy, after previously playing sixman football at Grady in West Texas (located northeast of Midland).

“We have a good mindset,” said Cates. “We are trying to change the culture.”

“It’s definitely changed,” said sophomore Donovan Taylor, a tight end and defen

sive end in his third year at Savoy.

“The culture has changed,” said Taylor. “It’s definitely gotten better.”

To start, Savoy on Sept. 2

won a varsity versus varsity six-man football game for the first time since 2018 -- also the first career victory for new head coach Jacob Guzman.

Guzman arrived last spring in Savoy, becoming only its second head football coach since the school committed in 2012 to having a six- instead of an eleven-man program.

“It’s a 100 percent difference on offense and defense,” said Guzman on Oct. 3, as the Car dinals prepared for their last non-district game a few days later against Wichita Falls Christian.

“Our base offense is an un balanced line that in the past [here] was balanced. We have taken a little bit of everything, run it and made it our own,” he said. “On defense, we have a balanced front and 2-3

[look].

“We had scheme differences; that was our first hurdle.”

Guzman and his staff have also benefited this season from what was already pres ent at Savoy.

“We came in having a good young group of kids who had won in junior high,” said Guz man.

“We had freshmen who had won,” he said, “and had a good experience.

“It’s hard to teach that.”

Note: Realignment last Feb ruary moved Savoy into the geographically wide-rang ing District 10-1A-I -- with Campbell, Gilmer Union Hill and Saint Jo. Unlike the larger classifications, only two post season berths are available per district in Class 1A Division I and II football in Texas.

Round & Round & Round: District 11-2A volleyball deciding postseason seeds w/unusual slate

Wolfe City -- 112A has chosen to utilize a different slate -- each team plays three matches against each district member.

Interscholastic League schools usually includes two halves -- teams play one another twice via home-and-home matches.

Having only four members -- Sam Rayburn, Trenton, Whitewright and

The first of three rounds of district play ended Oct. 4. Locally, host Sam Rayburn on Sept. 30 defeated Trenton, 2518, 25-11, 29-27.

All four teams started 11-2A play last month assured of trips to the playoffs, since each 2A district has the same number of available postseason berths.

Fannin Walk 4 Hope Raises Awareness and Funds for Suicide Prevention, Cultivates Caring Ethos

Fannin County residents wit nessed a feat of strength on October 1st during the Honor Beads Ceremony that preceded Fannin Walk 4 Hope at Legacy Ridge in Bonham, as family and friends stood for four loved ones who had succumbed to suicide. They represented the many oth ers who have walked the same road. Braving the pain,

grieve and lend strength to those looking on. Together with their fellow walkers, they are weaving raw grief into a safety net for Fannin County residents susceptible to sui cidal ideation.

After the opening ceremony, 271 registered walkers com pleted a 2.5 mile course, strid ing toward solidarity, aware ness, and suicide prevention.

The life-affirming action of walking builds physical strength, and openly talking about the signs of suicide and mental health resources in Fannin County builds a strong community. The walkers un derstand that strength does not mean being impervious to pain or bearing it alone. Rath er, to be strong is to reach out, through the pain, for help.

“I have shared space with some of the strongest children and adults in Fannin County,” Lindsey Prince, LPC, said in the opening ceremony key note address. In addition to her private counseling practice, Prince is a member of the Fan nin Behavioral Health Leader ship Team (FBHLT), and the mental health liaison for Liv ing Word Church in Bonham. “When people come to me,

they’re often at their lowest and have mustered up just enough strength to make the phone call or send the email. From there, strength arises in incredible and unexpected ways,” Prince continued. “If you’re struggling today, I encourage you: make the call, send the email, send the text message. If you’re here on behalf of somebody strug gling, encourage them to make the call, send the email, send the text message. Keep on until you find what you need. Leave voicemails, search online coun selor databases, be willing to go virtual; somebody is available.”

The Glaser Family Charitable Foundation (GFCF), FBHLT, and others have sought to ex pand mental health resources for Fannin County and to place resources closer to those who need access. GFCF Executive Director Cindy Bankston re ported that the “FBHLT, which benefitted from the Walk, has helped several school districts receive suicide prevention programs such as the Youth Aware of Mental Health pro gram (YAM) and also the Hope

Squad peer led program. The FBHLT is striving to have these programs in place at all of the Fannin County schools. If the school districts will agree to have these programs in place, we can get the fund ing.” Bankston also noted that “the FBHLT was instrumental in bringing Communities in Schools to the Bonham ISD.”

Joel Blaylock, counselor at IW Evans—a participating school, commented on the program, “It’s been really good. We try to get any information we can to help our kids. We are glad if we are able to identify someone who needs help.” This happens through kids making contact on the website regarding self or a peer, teachers observing signs in behavior, a child asking for help, or concerned adults in the community calling about their own child or another student.

“We welcome all sources of in formation [indicating] that stu dents need help,” Blaylock said. “We’re looking to help kids any way we can.”

Saturday’s event was the sev enth suicide awareness and prevention walk at Legacy Ridge, rechristened this year as the Fannin Walk 4 Hope. The Glaser Family and a number of walkers have referred to the hope they have in Jesus Christ, who walks with them in their sorrow and gives them strength enough to share. This model of being present for each other in the lowest moments resonates throughout the annual walk, and through the behavioral health programs offered in schools and in the community, cultivating an ethos of caring. And that makes Fannin County stronger.
