Three Women Killed Because Of Domestic Violence In The Home!

October is Domestic07/02/19 Violence Awareness Month Expires 6/30/12

As previously mentioned in an earlier article, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Yes, three Fannin

County women have been killed because of domestic violence; however that has been in the past. Domestic

violence continues to grow in our county; more and more cases of domestic violence come to the Fannin County

Criminal District Attorney and are presented to the Grand Jury each month. Domestic Violence often leads to sexual abuse and

sexual assault, children as well as adults. The most dangerous time for an abused person is when the decision is made and acted on leaving the abuser and that abusive relationship. There has to be a plan in place beforehand as to where the abused is going to go, cash or a separate bank account, clothes ready. One of the most common mistakes an abused person makes is allowing continual contact with the abuser, either on the phone or in person or getting on the internet and telling friends and relatives where you are, even if you only tell “friends,” someone could slip. If children are involved there may be a kidnapping situation that could develop. Domestic violence happens every day, as we have mentioned in the first article, and can be physical or psychological. A person, man or woman, can gain control over a spouse or significant other through psychological manipulation and domination. There may never be an act of physical abuse until the abuser snaps, commits a murder followed by a suicide and possibly the death of others during the act. A narcissist is a good example of this type of personality. The physical abuse can be at varying degrees of violence, ranging from burning someone with a cigarette to excessive abuse causing much more physical harm. Continued

This event benefits the children of Fannin County by raising funds needed for the Children’s Center to offer forensic interviews, counseling, advocacy, court accompaniment and other support services including their facility dog Render free of charge to victims of child abuse. “We are grateful for Brookshire’s faithful and generous support for nearly two decades,” said Sandy Barber with the Children’s Center. “By our tally, we have received more than $27,000 in cash donations from Brookshire’s since 2001. That doesn’t include their in-kind gifts such as diapers, baby wipes for our kids and food for special events. We are blessed by their partnership with us.” “Justice Is Served” will be held on the evening of Nov. 9 at the multi-purpose complex in Bonham. For more information, go to www. fanninccc.org.

From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 Revival in Our Day

By Bro. Bill Beasley Psalms 85 One of the spiritual events that I sorely miss in the life and work of the local church today is an annual emphasis that we have called Revival Week. When I talk to my fellow ministers as to why we no longer have these events, the reply I most often get is …”it is not worth the effort. They don’t work anymore.” I admit that a lot of work is involved but a lot of good fruit is enjoyed. In Psalms 85 the prayer is “Lord Revive Thy Works.” Revival weeks have resulted in many members of my family coming to know

our Heavenly Father in a personal relationship. During the 40 years of my pastoral ministry I had the privilege of conducting 85 revivals. Most were in the state of Texas, others in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and California. Eight churches served as the local base. Only the end time will reveal the lives that have been changed during these weeks. Mounted in my living room above the piano is a beautiful pictorial showing photographs of the eight churches my wife and I dedicat-

ed our lives to serving. Our picture is centrally located. I pass by it every day. I breathe a prayer often, a prayer that the work we have done can still result in a spiritual awakening. These churches are still responsible to God.

Sisson joining performers Lanny Joe Burnett, Ed Southerland and Doris Haynie. The earliest records of storytelling were in ancient Egypt and have continued down through centuries. Stories have historically included legends, heroes, myths, parables, fables and adventures. History, too, was passed down through storytelling. Stories bind groups of people together, and many today believe that storytelling is something that defines our humanity. Today, storytelling competitions occur all over the country, with the wittiest, funniest, most poignant or best told tales taking home prizes. Lanny Joe, Ed and Doris will delight the audience with their stories and Gary will join Lanny Joe with some tunes to “mix things up.” Advance tickets are $15 and tickets the day of the event are $20. Round up the family and join your friends for a wonderful fall evening by the fire. For more information, call the Creative Arts Center at 903-6402196. Benefits Counselors Ready at TCOG for Medicare Open Enrollment

SHERMAN, OCTOBER 14, 2019 – TCOG officials have announced they have ramped up their availability to assist residents throughout Cooke, Fannin and Grayson counties for the upcoming Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which begins tomorrow, October 15, and runs through December 7, 2019. TCOG’s Area Agency on Aging of Texoma (AAA) has State Certified Benefits Counselors on staff ready to help compare insurance plans to ensure you have the right health and prescription drug coverage. You may review and stay with your current plan or look for a new plan with better coverage, higher quality and lower costs. “It is important to note that any changes made during this time will not become effective until January 1, 2020,” states TCOG Executive Director, Eric Bridges. “However, new plans in 2020 are allowed to offer even more services for certain members with chronic conditions, including nutrition services, in-home supports, and home modifications.” There are now more factors involved in deciding if you need to change plans. Judy Conner, the director of the Area Agency on Aging of Texoma, recommends to review the information about your current plan if you are already in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan in order to ensure it

will still meet your medical needs next year. Conner noted, “One question you should ask yourself is if you were prescribed a new medication during the year, does your old plan cover that medication? If not, you may need to find another plan that cover all your medications.” During the Annual Enrollment Period, you can also switch from: Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; from one Medicare Advantage plan to another; from one Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan to another; or elect to drop your Medicare Part D coverage altogether. If you did not enroll in a Medicare Part D plan when you were first eligible, you may do so during this time of Open Enrollment. Bridges adds, “If you are a Medicare Beneficiary, we encourage you to call the Area Agency on Aging of Texoma to schedule a free, personal appointment for an evaluation of your specific medical insurance needs.” During that appointment, your situation will also be assessed to see if you qualify for Medicare Extra Help Programs. is an emergency. Horse’s guts are easily penetrated by bacteria, and they get sick and die VERY quickly from diarrhea. Most times they need a lot of veterinary care if their diarrhea turns watery. If your horse has cow pies, or solid feces with a little watery material on the outside, it can wait until normal business hours. However, if the cow pies are associated with colic or fever, it’s time to call. Obviously, these are not all the scenarios where you may or may not need a vet. If you are ever in doubt, a simple call can help you, even if you don’t want to have the vet out. Remember, Hayes Equine Veterinary Services has a 24-hour emergency line. Just call and leave your name and number on the emergency line and the doctor on call with call you as soon as they are available. The other thing to do is to make sure you have a dose of Bute and a dose of Banamine on hand. This can save you a lot of time, money, and worry if you can give your horse something for pain and see if it works before you call. If it works, awesome. If it doesn’t, call!

COOKING IN FANNIN COUNTY

by Tommie Sue Turner

I usually enjoy quick and easy recipes, but this one sounds so good that I have to print it. It’s not extremely difficult, but takes a little more time than I usually like to spend. I think it will be well worth the try! SPINACH SENSATION ½ lb. bacon slices 1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream 3 eggs, separated 2 T. all-purpose flour 1/8 tsp black pepper 1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry ½ cup (2 oz.) shredded sharp cheddar cheese ½ cup dry bread crumbs 1 T. butter, melted Pam Preheat oven to 350°. Spray 2-quart round baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Place bacon in single layer in large skillet. Cook over medium heat until crisp. Remove from skillet.

Drain on paper towels. Crumble and set aside. Combine sour cream, egg yolks, flour and pepper in large bowl. Set aside. Beat egg whites in medium bowl with electric mixer at high speed until stiff peaks form. Stir ¼ of egg whites into sour cream mixture. Fold in remaining egg whites. Arrange half of spinach in prepared dish. Top with half of sour cream mixture. Sprinkle ¼ cup cheese over sour cream mixture. Sprinkle bacon over cheese. Repeat layers, ending with remaining ¼ cup cheese. Combine bread crumbs and butter in small bowl. Sprinkle evenly over cheese. Bake uncovered 30-35 minutes or until egg mixture is set. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Domestic Continued from page 1 Signs of physical abuse may never be seen because of the locations on the body and the fact that the abused does not want them to be seen. Through technology today there is now a camera that can define bruising under the skin, actually showing the number of times a person was struck. A law enforcement officer or case worker must take the extra steps when confronted with a case of suspected abuse in children as well as adults. When an officer is confronted with a suspected case it is common for the abused person to say “he/she didn’t mean to do it” or “he/she won’t do it again and I don’t want to press charges”. If there is evidence that there has been physical abuse or injury the officer is required by Chapter 22 of the Texas Penal Code to arrest the suspect. It is a very common phenomenon that an abused person will repeatedly go back to the abuser out of fear of more physical or psychological abuse in greater proportions. An abused person can also

fit into the definition of the Stockholm Syndrome as it has been found in cases of sexual abuse, discrimination (as in a narcissistic relationship degrading another person) as well as religious oppression by the abuser. We as a community must break the cycle of domestic violence, it affects all levels of society, not only heterosexuals, married or unmarried, race, creed and life styles play no part in it. Children in abusive relationships, whether physical or psychological, suffer just as much harm as the adults. The psychological abuse of a child is a given and is extremely traumatic for the child, the physical harm happens every day and can be life threatening. Photos by Christina Brown

By Christina Brown Construction has started on the Bois d’Arc Lake water pipeline which consists of 36 miles of 90 inch pipeline being laid across Fannin County from the lake itself to the Leonard Water Treatment Plant. Seeing the huge white pipe that is scattered across Fannin County, I wanted to learn more about this project that is affecting so much land in our area and then share it with our readers. One of the places that the pipeline is being laid is at my parent’s property located on Hwy. 56 in Dodd City. In order to lay the pipeline at Hwy. 56, the contractors are digging a tunnel under the highway and under the railroad track that runs to the south of the highway. With all the massive heavy

equipment that is available today, you would think that would be a fairly simple task. But it’s not. In this area of Fannin County there is Blue Shale rock beneath the layers of white rock; it is hard and even harder to remove. At the north edge of Hwy. 56 a 30 foot hole has been dug just large enough to fit a small front end loader on the ground inside the hole. In order to dig the tunnel, the use of jack hammers, hand tools and good old fashioned man power is used to break up and remove the Blue Shale rock. The rock is then placed into the front end loader and once the front end loader is full, it is emptied into a large bucket which is lifted out of the hole by a crane. Once the bucket is emptied above ground it is returned to the hole empty once again to be

filled with more Blue Shell. The process reminds me somewhat of coal mining. It is a tedious and slow process, working your way to your finishing point ever so slowly, a little at a time. By doing this process over and over, the construction workers have created a tunnel under the highway and with every 18 inches they progress, they take a piece of tin safety band and bolt it together around the edges of the tunnel to create a 114 inch safety band that will in the end house the 90 inch pipe. Once the project is completed they will have jack hammered a tunnel of approximately 200 feet. If you have any interesting stories concerning the Bois d’Arc Lake construction, please feel free to email me at: fclchristina@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

Open Arms Homeless Shelter

By Tina Moore Open Arms Homeless Shelter is a Biblical faith-based organization with a mission to provide the homeless in Fannin County with temporary shelter which includes not just a bed, but also daily meals, showers, and laundry facilities. The mission is to give hope and encouragement with guidance and resources to move the homeless toward an independent life. The shelter plans to open at the beginning of 2020. The building for Open Arms Homeless Shelter at 1205 Albert Broadfoot in Bonham is undergoing a complete

remodel. Tillman Boyd, construction project manager, is working hard along with volunteers to get the building ready by the end of the year. On Saturday, October 12, The Way Christian Fellowship of Savoy, Texas, showed up with twelve volunteers. They worked hard to paint the main room and to scrape the outside of the building. Thanks to Chief Mike Bankston and Ronny Welch for helping to supervise the work on Saturday. Open Arms board members Larry White and Ronnie Bruce also worked. The outside of the building has now been caulked and is ready to be power washed and

then spray painted. Next in the remodel includes installation of fixtures and flooring. Thanks so much to the hard working volunteers. Thanks also to those who have faithfully been giving money to get this building ready. Community support has been wonderful. Please continue to pray for the shelter, because a lot of work remains to be done. The shelter is already receiving many requests from people in our community who need help. For more information about the shelter, to volunteer or to donate, please visit the website: www.oashelter.com.

Relay For Life of Fannin County

Fannin County, Texas -- There’s nothing like the feeling of a community coming together to help make a change in the world. That vibe, that feeling of “we’re doing something big here,” is just one of the things that makes Relay For Life of Fannin County, Texas so amazing. We want you to experience this with us. We want you to see how our community comes together. We want you to see how the survivors and caregivers are honored, and we want you to feel the love that is shown during the Luminaria ceremony where we remember loved ones lost. All the funds we raise through this event helps the American Cancer Society to create a cancerfree world for future generations. Please join us and let’s make a difference together. The Relay For Life of Fannin County would not be successful without the help of our generous donors and volunteers. Because of you, we’ve been able to help thousands of people across the globe with life-saving cancer research studies, crucial patient care programs, and education and prevention initiatives. That’s

why it’s so important to get involved in Relay For Life and fundraise-because when you do, you help save lives. Joining Relay For Life of Fannin County is easy. All you have to do is visit us online at www.relayforlife.org/fannincotx, sign up, and decide how you’d like to be involved. Here are some ways to participate: Team Captains Being a team captain is an important role. It’s up to you to recruit members, set fundraising goals, organize fundraising activities and most of all, and cheer on your team. Participant There are several ways you can get involved as a participant. You can join an existing team, start your own, or volunteer at the event. Either one you choose, we’d love to see you Survivors and Caregivers Survivors and caregivers are the heart of every Relay For Life event. We have activities and events designed specifically for you so you can get to know others in the community. In fact, it’s the largest cancer support network in the world!

Volunteer: Relay For Life events wouldn’t be successful fundraisers without passionate event leaders, just like you. And since many Relay events are different, we put together a handful of training materials to help things run as smoothly as possible. If you would like to know more about Relay For Life of Fannin County, please contact Tim La Vergne II, Event Chair at 903.227.8417 or tlavergneii@ cableone.net. Be sure to follow us on www.facebook. com/rflfanncotx! This year’s Relay For Life event will bring our community together in ways like never before! To continue to honor individuals who have fought bravely against the merciless disease of cancer, Survivors, their families and all those who have been affected by this disease will come together along with their community to create a united network of support and dedication. The theme for 2020 is “SURVIVOR”, inspired by hitting our 20th Anniversary as one of the longest Relay events in this area. We have also extended an invitation to the Lamar County Relay chapter to our event and sponsorship opportunities available. Relay For Life is all about a COMMUNITY taking up the fight against cancer! We may be a small town, but we have a BIG Fight! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime. Thanks and have blessed day!

Rebel Runway Benefits Kids Press Release - Rebel Roots Boutique sits on the east side of the square in Bonham. In August before school started, Rebel Roots owner Melody Hammett and her staff put together a two-day event at the Multi-Purpose complex in Bonham called the Rebel Runway Event and Fashion Show. It was the second year for this event. Vendors who sell

clothing, jewelry, beauty products and more set up shop in the Complex. Friday night there was a concert featuring Sam Riggs. Zane Dockery was the opening band. On Saturday, activities included a fashion show and SCA steak cookoff. The fashion show featured clothing from the vendors at the event and models were local people. Proceeds from the event

were donated to the Fannin Country Children’s Center. “We started this event to bring some social life to our community while raising money for a local charity,” said Hammett. “I feel Like God put me in this business to help others and this event was a way I could reach a lot of people at one time.” Hammett recently presented the Children’s Center with a check for

$7,000. “We are very grateful for this generous gift,” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Center. “Melody and her staff worked hard to put on a great event. This gift will help provide counseling, advocacy and other important services for children from hard places to help them heal from abuse.”

History In The Making On The Red River

By Christina Brown A lot of changes are happening in Fannin County right now, one being the construction of the new Red

River bridge. If you haven’t visited the northern part of Fannin County lately, it would be worth your drive up State Hwy. 78 to the Red River to see another history in

the making in Fannin County. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is building a new Red River bridge just to the east of the current bridge. The current bridge was built in 1938 during the Great Depression as part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. It replaced a former toll bridge that was opened in July 1927, but collapsed during a storm in 1934 when the swinging bridge’s wire cables became twisted and snapped. According to fannincountyhistory.org the current Red River bridge is the only surviving K-Truss bridge in Texas. The bridge is a little over 2,100 feet long and connects the Fannin County, Texas and Bryan County, Oklahoma areas. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation states the new bridge is necessary due to structural deficiencies, but states that the current bridge is still safe to use and very little disruption of traffic is expected at this time. The new bridge is expected to be completed by next Fall 2020. For more information on the history of the Red River Bridge visit www. fannincountyhistory.org.

The Purple Thursday Challenge is on Win a $50 Gift Card to Wal-Mart

By Sandy Hood

Purple Thursday is October 24th. Fannin County Family

Crisis Center (FCFCC) challenges families, youth or adult groups, businesses, individuals and the community to wear purple. Get creative, snap a photo and post your pictures on Facebook with the hashtag

#purplethursdayinfannin or go to our Facebook page (Fannin Crisis Center) and post your pictures. The most creative and impactful photo posted will win a $50 gift card to WalMart. Why purple? The color purple symbolizes courage, survival and peace. The goal of the day on October 24th is to raise awareness about domestic violence, teen dating violence and intimate partner violence. Let’s show our community that we have ZERO TOLERANCE to violence. FCFCC encourages and promotes safe communities, safe families and safe relationships. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Fannin County Family Crisis Center is here to answer questions, offer support, and help those that reach out to us wanting and/or needing help. Violence in relationships are frequently hidden from the public. Many victims suffer in silence, are afraid to seek help, feel ashamed, or they just do not know where to turn for help. Sometimes family or friends may suspect that someone they

know is in a relationship that is not healthy, but do not know what to do. Please call us and learn how you can help those you know before it is too late. Maybe you are in a relationship that is unhealthy, and you would like to learn what resources are available to assist you, or maybe you just want to talk. We can be contacted on our 24/7 phone line @ 903-583-7000. The Fannin County Family Crisis Center’s address is 118 East Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham. You can visit our office Monday thru Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm. Facts on Tween & Teen Dating Violence • Did you know 1 in 3 adolescent girls in the United States is victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner? • Did you know that 1 in 3 teens reported knowing a friend or peer who had been hit, punched, kicked or physically hurt by someone they were dating? • Did you know that fewer than 1 in 3 teens in an abusive relationship confided in their parents about the abuse? • Did you know that youth ages 18-19 years old experience the highest rates of stalking? It is time to view violence as NOT OK and NOT NORMAL! So, take a stand with us and post your Purple Thursday photos on our Facebook page (Fannin Crisis Center) for a chance to win a $50 gift card to Wal-Mart.

BENNY MARK CAFFEE

H o n e y Grove – Benny Mark Caffee was born on February 4, 1959 to Ruth Gaither Caffee and Ben Caffee at Honey Grove, Texas. He departed this world and entered heaven on October 15, 2019 at Medical Center Plano. Services were held on Friday October 18, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at the Windom Baptist Church. Service was officiated by Rev. Morris Robbin and Rev. James Barnes. Interment followed at Windom Cemetery. He grew up in Petty, Texas and graduated from West Lamar High School. He was proud of being a Leopard and spoke of dear school friends, Ag, basketball and baseball. He married Terri Chaney Caffee in 1980 and began a life in Windom. He did not know when he said, “I do” that he was agreeing to 39 years of coaching Special Olympics, but he loved coaching, the athletes, and the memories he made. He chauffeured the lady coaches and never minded being the lone male. This prepared him for retirement. He enjoyed traveling, and Branson was a favorite destination. He took several trips with his wife and long-time friends Lynn Stone and Marjory Eaton remarking, “Just tell me where to drive.” He was a devoted father to Darcy and Kelly. He attended band concerts, gymnastic events, coached softball and little dribblers, beta conventions, and many other activities (whether he enjoyed it or not!) He was an active loving papaw, which was his favorite role in life. He made sure he was at school activities, goat shows, sale, little dribblers, little league, programs: whatever they had. Kaleb, Braxton, Kason, Kaydence, and Kaleigh were his sunshine. He accepted Christ after Darcy was born and was a member of Windom Baptist Church. He retired from Campbell Soup after 35 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and circle track racing. His favorite thing was spending time with his family: the family of birth (mother, brothers, and sister), the family he married into, the family he made, and the family we acquired through his stepfather. He loved fiercely, had strong opinions, and was intensely loyal. He had a hard head and a soft heart. He will be missed greatly. Survivors are his wife, Terri Caffee of Windom, His daughter Darcy McPherson and husband Joe of Windom, daughter Kelly Covington and husband Robert of Allen’s point; grandchildren Kaleb,

Braxton, Kason, Kaydence, and Kaleigh; Mother Ruth James of Petty, brothers Ricky Caffee and wife Mattie of Windom, Jimmy Caffee and wife Alice of Petty, and sister, Cathy Burris of Rockport. He has numerous nieces and nephews, Gaither and Caffee cousins, and several James cousins-in-loves with whom we enjoyed a reunion last weekend

Applications Being Accepted For Texas Game Warden, State Park Police Cadet Class

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is building its next generation of elite state law enforcement officers with the 64th Texas Game Warden and State Park Police Cadet class. Applications are being accepted Oct. 15-Nov. 15. Texas game wardens and park police are a unique breed of law enforcement unlike no other. As fully commissioned state peace officers, they are responsible for the enforcement of ALL Texas criminal laws. Unlike other law enforcement officers, however, game warden and park police responsibilities extend beyond the pavement, with additional specialization in natural resource, water safety, and environmental law enforcement. “In addition to the privilege of protecting the State’s extremely valuable natural

resources, Texas game wardens are also on the front line of the state’s emergency response efforts,” said Col. Grahame Jones, TPWD Law Enforcement Director. “Our officers are specially trained in search, rescue, and recovery operations on land, air and in the water. The job of a Texas game warden is about freedom. Freedom from the confines of an office or a roadway. Freedom from set schedules and routes. A Texas game warden’s jurisdiction is not confined but statewide. Being a Texas game warden is about patrolling and protecting Texas.” “State park police officers are charged with protecting the citizens of Texas and nearly 10 million annual visitors that use our State Parks,” said Chief Wes Masur, Director of State Park Police. “Our officers patrol and protect the most

historically significant, and important cultural and natural resources Texas has to offer. Forests, lakes, rivers, beaches, mountains, deserts and even monuments are part of our unique patrol areas. What a great honor and rewarding career.” Applicants must be 21 years of age before the projected graduation date of May 2021 and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants must also undergo a preliminary interview, background investigation and physical skills tests focusing on agility and swimming. Persons interested in strengthening their swimming skills should contact the American Red Cross to take a swimming course. All cadets are required to live at the Game Warden Training Center near Hamilton, Texas, for the duration of the 30-week training period, set to begin

Sept. 2020. After graduation, new game wardens and park police officers will be assigned to vacant stations throughout Texas with the responsibility of protecting the state’s natural resources. For more information, check the state park police or game warden career pages online or contact Texas game warden recruiters Kevin Malonson at kevin.malonson@tpwd.texas. gov and game warden Eric Howard at eric.howard@tpwd. texas.gov, park police recruiter Lt. It’s time to plant your wildflowers

Writer: Laura Muntean, 979-847-9211, laura. muntean@ag.tamu.edu Texas wildflower lovers should know that now is the time to plant their favorite varieties for blooms in spring, said Joseph Johnson, program manager for The Gardens at Texas A&M University. Planting in the fall Before the start of the rainy season — will give your wildflowers time to germinate and gain a good root system before going dormant during the winter. “It is good to use a wildflower mix with several different species to ensure year-round interests and not just blooms for the spring,” he said. “This

will give you an array of colors, but also an opportunity to see what does especially well in your wildflower area for the next year. If you let your flowers go to seed, you could see them again and again from year to year.” Soil prep is essential Preparing your soil is key to gaining an array of wildflowers worth taking the family’s photo in. Ensure soil-seed contact by tilling and tamping the seeds into the soil. Water the area lightly following planting to settle the seeds into the soil. “If you are partial to bluebonnets, consider planting them in full sun with good drainage,” he said. “Otherwise, an area with a minimum of six hours of sunlight should

be sufficient.” Don’t over-water, and don’t fertilize, he added. A little bit of care goes a long way for the state flower. Scatter your seeds Spread your seeds over your prepped soil according to the instructions of your selected seed mix, or spread them thicker for a more full meadow. Once your seeds are in place, take a walk around the area to compress the seeds into the ground for good germination. Don’t bury or cover them though. The seeds need

good exposure to sun. Enjoy the blooms Because of the fall planting, the seeds should not require too much care and watering. Blooms should begin to appear in early spring, depending on the weather, and with a good seed variety, may continue into summer.

By Rich Hilliard TRENTON -- One win does not a season make. But a 27-0 home victory over Celeste to begin District 5-2A-I play on Oct. 11 equated a milestone now for Trenton -and may later have more meaning. The win improved the Tigers’ overall record in 2019 to 4-2 -- the most victories in a single season for the school since resuming varsity football in 2012. “It’s very humbling,” said senior Kaiden West, a free safety and wide receiver, noting the excitement and energy he has noticed. “It shows how hard we have worked this school year.” “I definitely didn’t plan to play this year... , but I’m glad I did,” said senior Tre Jackson, a wide receiver, cornerback and second-year varsity player. “We’ve gotten closer. Everybody has stepped up and done their jobs.” West and Jackson equate half of a senior quartet for Trenton, which opened the 2019 regular season -- Josh Shipman’s first at the helm after an offseason promotion -- with a 20-6 win over 2A-II Detroit on Aug. 30. The Tigers then posted con-

secutive shutouts in successive weeks of Inspired Vision, 52-0, on Sept. 6 and 3A-I Dallas APlus Academy, 43-0, on Sept. 13. The victories -- all coming at home -- assured the Tigers of their second-consecutive season with a minimum of three wins since the restart -- and third overall since resuming, with 2015 being the other. Those previous campaigns came under former head coach Bret Cranford who relinquished the role of head coach last spring but remains on the football staff and continues to be Trenton’s boys athletics coordinator and baseball manager. On Oct. 4, Trenton almost achieved the milestone fourth regular-season win, but 2A-I host Como-Pickton edged the Tigers, 24-23, as each completed pre-district play. A week later, Trenton returned home and posted the aforementioned shutout of Celeste -- which equated only the second district win for the Tigers since the restart earlier this decade. However, unlike that first district win -- coincidentally, also against Celeste, 59-38, on the road in late October of 2016

Wommacks, Finley finish 1, 2, 3 as Trenton girls win district XC By Rich Hilliard TRENTON -- Kayla Wommack won in 14:14, Catherine Finley took second place in 14:48 and Kenzie Wommack placed third in 14:49 to lead host Trenton on Oct. 16 to the District 13-2A girls cross country championship and a team regional advance. Other members of Trenton’s title team and their district places included: Kelley Ar-

reaga, sixth, 15:09 (personal record); Julie Richardson, ninth, 16:04 (personal record); Brianna Verde, 13th, 16:20 (personal record); and Mariana Caro, 15th, 16:51. Additionally, Christopher Kirkham took eighth in 20:24 and Kevin Kirkham placed 10th in 20:46 for Trenton to also advance as boys individuals to regional competition. Meanwhile, Honey Grove qualified its boys and girls

-- this triumph on Oct. 11 has more significance. Three years ago, the previous district win came with Trenton, which that season finished 2-8 overall and 1-5 in 6-2A-I, as a member of a seven-team grouping -- where all but three teams were assured of qualifying for the playoffs. Now part of a five-team district, one win could be enough to put the Tigers into one of the again four available postseason berths. “This team has the most heart,” said senior Idres Jordan, a cornerback, inside receiver and second-year varsity player. “I love that we have made it this far. “Last year, I loved it, but senior year has been different,” said Jordan. “We have a chance to go to the playoffs.” Said senior Hagen Moore, a wide receiver and outside linebacker: “I’ve been trying to do this for four years. It feels good to put it together and see what we can do.” Note: Having the district bye on Oct. 18, Trenton will resume 5-2A-I action on Oct. 25 at Valley View.
