what selections were made. This article will explain how the voter can know that no one will know how they voted.
There are two ways to vote in Texas, depending on your eligi bility, in person voting and bal lot by mail. The in-person voter enters the polling place, or if un able to do so without injury or without a personal assistant may go to the “curb” to vote in per son. The election worker veri fies the voter’s identity, then the voter signs either an electronic poll pad or a yellow, paper com bination form. This process is not connected to any voting equipment. The act of voting is
an entirely separate system and there is no need for voter iden tification and in fact it would violate the law.
So let’s discuss the voting sys tem. Once the voter’s identity is established and the poll worker determines the voter is indeed on the voter rolls the voter now heads over to the equipment. The voting equipment has no hard wired or wi-fi or bluetooth or any other connectivity to the poll pads or to anything else, as is a requirement of Texas Election Code. The actual act of casting a vote is completely independent. The Cast Vote Re cords (digital images) are in ran dom order without a specified time stamp specifically to pro tect the voters who voted that day. The first voted record on the CVR images will not be the first person in line to vote, this is to protect anonymity.
If eligible, a voter may vote a ballot by mail which are sent out with several envelopes. There is a white “secrecy” en velope in which the voter is re quired to put their actual ballot into which is then sealed be fore going into the mailing en velope. There are no markings on the secrecy envelope or the ballot with the voter’s name, or any identifying numbers tied to the voter. The secrecy envelope goes into another en velope for mailing. The bal lots are given to a board made up of various political parties for accountability. The out side of the mailing envelope is used to determine eligibility of the voter. No one is looking at the white secrecy envelope at this stage because the outside envelope has not been opened.
There is no need! Once eligi bility is determined the white envelope is removed from the outside envelope and stacked into piles, the outside envelope is retained as a matter of re cord. The white envelopes are then opened and the ballots go to the Central Counting Station.
There may be slight variations by each county but the protec tions will be the same, as is re quired by law. Poll watchers are permitted to watch these activi ties, but they must be appointed by a party chair, political action committee or a candidate on the ballot.
For more information, call the Fannin County Election Division at 903-583-7488.
Ballots for the November 8, 2022 elections are on www. co.fannin.tx.us; the school dis trict voters will go to their nor mal county voting precinct. See the Order of Election for loca tions.
All early voting in Fannin County will be held at the Roy V. Floyd Civic Center-1100 W. 5th St, Bonham, Texas, (“The Armory”, on the grounds where Trade Days is held.) There will be curbside voting available for those who need assistance and a ballot by mail may be requested for voters who qualify to vote by mail.

He noted this is for a 2-year agreement, detailed the benefits of the ser vice and commented on how Fannin County is one of the few counties that have not had this service in place. It was also noted that this was figured into the budget. Commissioner Lane made the motion to ap prove with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed. ched dar cheese, sour cream, and smooth potatoes. It’s the ul timate comfort food and so easy to make!
BAKED POTATO SOUP
4 large russet potatoes, equal to 2 lbs.
¾ tsp. salt
6 slices cut bacon
1 large onion
3 garlic cloves, minced 2 Tbsp. butter
¼ c. flour
3 c. chicken broth
2 c. half and half
¾ c. sour cream
½ tsp. black pepper
2 c. grated cheddar cheese
1/8 c. chives, diced
Cut the bacon into 1” squares and cook in a large pot over low heat, rotating occasionally. Remove and set aside once crisp. Leave 2 Tbsp of bacon drippings in the pot. While the bacon cooks, peel the potatoes and cut them into 1” cubes. Add to a stock pot and cover the potatoes with water. Add the salt and boil gently for 20 minutes or until very tender. Drain, then gently mash. Set aside. Add the diced onion to the pot with the bacon drip pings and cook until soft ened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and butter and cook 1 more minute. Whisk in four, and stir 1 full minute to re move the raw flour taste. Add the chicken broth. Stir to loosen any bacon remnants
from the bottom of the pot, this will add flavor. Slowly add the half and half. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Stir in the potatoes, then mix in the sour cream, and pepper. Remove from heat. If desired, blend with an immersion blender for a creamier and smoother con sistency. Gradually sprinkle with shredded cheese and stir until combined. Make sure the base of the soup isn’t too hot or the cheese won’t melt creamy and smooth. The soup will continue to thicken as it sits. Garnish with green onions and bacon, serve!
Always adjust salt if need ed. Another tip is use room temperature cheese, sour cream and half and half. I have boiled my potatoes in the same pot but when you do this you take a chance of too much starch that will make your soup gluey.
This sounds so good on a cold Fall evening!
ENJOY!!

First United Bank honored with National Marketing Award
Durant, OK – Each year, the American Bankers Association (ABA) recognizes the nation’s best bank mar keting initiatives at the ABA Bank Marketing Conference. The 2022 Brand Slam awards honored elite bank marketing strategies that stood out among hundreds of nationwide entries from banks of all sizes.
First United is excited to announce that they have been recognized as the ABA’s 2022 Brand Slam award winner in the In tegrated Marketing Campaign category for its First United Bank: United Acts of Kind ness campaign. This category recognizes a bank that has launched a product, promoted a service, or set out to market a particular line of business using multichannel tactics. A panel of over 50 financial marketing experts reviewed the applications and judged them based on concept, strat

First United’s United Acts of Kindness campaign objective was to measurably increase the amount of kindness in the communities it serves by acti vating and tracking a goal of 100,000 acts of kindness in 24 hours during the National Day of Kindness. The cam paign used multiple integrated traditional and non-traditional marketing channels, includ ing human, retail, digital, and
broadcast, and eclipsed its goal thrice with over 300,000 acts of kind ness logged during the February 17, 2022, event.
“I am so proud of our marketing team. Their campaign work sup porting United Acts of Kindness is officially the best in the country,” said Jade Metcalf, SVP and Director of Market ing at First United.
“This is an excellent example of how unique our brand is in the mar ketplace and what can happen when we prioritize serving our communities. Spe cial thanks to our community banks for fully engaging with UAK - it really helped bring the award application to life.”
First United’s purpose is to inspire and empower others to Spend Life Wisely, which includes a holistic approach to life that encompasses finan cial well-being, faith, health and wellness, and personal growth
Grayson College and partners awarded $1,060,000 grant from Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
Denison, Texas - The Grayson College Center for Workplace Learning (CWL) and two con sortium partners, Paris Junior College and Vernon College,
were awarded a $1,060,000 grant to build a talent-strong Texas through the creation, expan sion and redesign of workforce education and training programs
Coordinating Board (THECB) awarded the funding from its Texas Reskilling and Upskill ing through Education (TRUE) program. This is the second time that Grayson College has re ceived TRUE grant funding.
The CWL will use this grant funding to provide scholar ships valued up to $2,500 for fast-track, healthcare and law enforcement training programs. Grant funds will also support certification costs for students pursuing training in welding and cybersecurity. Scholarship recipients must be Texas resi dents who have been affected in some way by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Texas is experiencing huge growth in the demand for em ployees with training beyond high school, but less than four years in college,” explained Dr. Djuna Forrester, CWL Executive Director. “TRUE grant funding from the Coordinating Board allows us to train students spe cifically to meet this growing demand and create pathways to employment.”
“Grayson College is proud to be a part of the economic growth of our region,” said Dr. Jeremy McMillen, Grayson Col lege President. “The Coordinat ing Board’s strategic programs like TRUE allow us to leverage grant-funded training dollars to meet employers’ needs and improve the career prospects of our students. Plus, these grants provide incredible opportunities for students to get valuable cer tifications with very little out of pocket costs.”
Grayson College plans to serve 575 individual students with this round of funding. This is an increase over the 442 stu dents served by the $1.4 million of TRUE grant funds in 2022. TRUE grant funded scholarships are made available on a rolling basis consistent with the pro grams’ schedules. More informa tion can be found at grayson.edu/ cwl or by contacting Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning at 903-463-8765.

To the delight of many in attendance, he described the fish enhancement work that has gone into the develop ment of the lake and stated, “this is the first major reser voir ever in the world to have its largemouth bass popula tion built entirely by stock ings from direct descendants of 13 pound plus largemouth bass that anglers caught and donated to our Toyota Share lunker Program.” Apparently, there were a lot of fishermen among the guests as that state ment drew a hearty round of applause. After giving a fa vorable report of the status of the fish currently in the fisher ies, he noted that due to the ongoing drought and with the lake being 20 ft low, the lake will not be open to the public at this time and an opening date will depend upon future rainfall. He then spoke on waterfowl hunting, the recre ational benefits and long-term strategies of stewardship for the lake before introducing Chairwoman of the Texas Water Development Board, Brooke Paup.
Ms. Paup spoke on the size and scope of the lake and her gratitude to the legislators who entrusted TWDB with the Swift Fund in 2013 that enabled the $1.46 billion dol lars to be committed to the Bois d’Arc Lake project. She recognized several staff mem bers including the Executive Administrator of TWDB, Jeff Walker before introducing Representative Reggie Smith.
Representative Reggie Smith came to the podium and noted how he is look ing forward to utilizing all the lake has to offer and how glad he was to be at this dedi cation. Before proceeding, he stated he did want to take time to recognize a man, who though unable to be present at today’s event, was very much involved in the real ization of this lake and was our State Representative for 16 years, Larry Phillips. He then commended the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department for their ongoing stewardship and spoke on the impressive number of jobs coming to Northeast Texas and how that growth is of national impor tance as well as being impor tant for the State of Texas. He concluded by stating that he is looking forward to being one of the stewards on this project and working with all those involved in that stewardship before introducing Senator Bob Hall.
Senator Hall jokingly ref
erenced the waiting Barbe cue lunch and proceeded to note how he was honored to have served Fannin County and commented that with the recent redistricting, Bryan Hughes would soon be serving Fannin County in his stead.
He then recognized legislators that were present at the days event including, Charles Per ry, Senator Paxton from Collin County, Keith Bell, Matt Sha heen and Chairman King. He spoke on how reservoirs like Bois d’Arc “allow Texas to be Texas “and went on to explain how there is actually only one “natural” lake in Texas and if it weren’t for building reser voirs, Texas would not be the economic powerhouse that it is. He briefly touched on the cooperation between the state legislature, the state agencies, the counties and the cities, and the long-term economic im pact that will be had as a result of this lake. He concluded by voicing deep gratitude for the name of this newest Texas res ervoir, Bois d’Arc Lake.
Before the crowd was dis persed for the Texas brisket barbecue lunch, Senator An gela Paxton spoke to extend thanks to law enforcement and all those who are keeping everyone safe, before briefly sharing her observations and extending her thanks to every one who’s labor and creativity made this day possible. She then presented NTMWD’s Director Jenna Covington, a Certificate of Congratulations for all their hard work and all they have done to make the growth of Texas continue.
Beneath a huge tent where lunch was being served, were three serving lines where one could partake in brisket, sau sage, beans, potato salad and cole slaw. There was also sweet and unsweetened tea along with an assortment of desert choices available for guests. It was a nice lunch that was made even more enjoyable by the company of Commissioners Lane, Mag ness and Self along with Sheriff Johnson and Lt. Frank Deater.
After lunch I boarded a tour bus to take advantage of a tour offered to guests and media. The tour was hosted by NT MWD tour guides Cody Gra ham, Cory Anderson and Lake Operations Manager Jennifer
Stanley who provided key information about the lake’s infrastructures. We went by the emergency spillway first and along the way to the 90 ft tall dam, Cory described how (2) 90-inch pipelines carries the water to the Leonard Wa ter Treatment Plant. He then went on to describe the liquid oxygen that is turned into gas and piped into the lake to im prove water quality. We came upon the boat ramp area at the dam that can be used by water district operations and law en
forcement even when water is at low levels. Cory noted that though the ramp we viewed is for NTMWD use, there are three other ramps in other ar eas of the lake that will have picnic tables and restrooms for public use once the lake opens.
I did not trip and fall.
I attacked the floor and I believe I am winning.

Letter to the Editor
I was very upset to learn from reading the Leader that the County Commissioners voted to close down the Nautilus facility by the end of this year because the new Justice Center is going to be built next door.
We were told that it would be a safety hazard to allow people to drive to Nautilus while con struction is going on. A sug gestion was made to have a fence put up to avoid having people drive in the construc
tion area. It just seems like more could be done to keep this place open.
Nautlilus serves a diverse group of people. Senior citi zens use the facilty for the classes they offer to help with physical ailments. People drop in during lunch hour to use the machines. The Hispanic peo ple use Nautilus to excercise and meet and talk to one anoth er. There is a Hispanic - speak ing employee on site to help with questions and instructions for using the machines. Once this place is closed there will
be nowhere they can go. All in all, it is a great loss to the community to have this closed down. The owner up graded everything this sum mer, painting and upgrading the air conditioning because they were told the lease would be renewed.
I would ask that the County Commissioners reconsider closing Nautlus down. This would give the owners time to find another place for their business.

Be Part of The Solution – Vote!
Every registered voter in Fan nin County should vote in the upcoming elections. Several reasons for voting are noted below:
• Your vote is your opportu nity to elect the candidates you believe best represent your val ues. Voting trends indicate that the rural Texas counties vote conservative while the metro politan counties vote liberal.
• We need strong and compe tent leaders at all levels of gov ernment. Texas is growing at a rapid pace. Population growth brings many challenges such as adequate water, adequate energy, a superior education system, border control, law en forcement. It takes local, state, and national government col
laboration to ensure the best fu ture for Texas and our country in general.
• Your vote makes a differ ence. In the May 2022 elec tions, a $53.6 million Bonham ISD bond election was defeated by one (1) vote. A $60 million Bonham ISD bond election will be on the November bal lot. You can make a difference.
• Voting is the right thing to do. When your children see you vote, it helps build the next generation of citizens who believe they can make a differ ence by voting.
Early voting begins October 24th and ends on November 4th. The regular voting day is November 8th

We passed the pump station where there are currently three pumps designed to pump 50 million gallons a day with there being a future projection of nine pumps. When asked about a public beach area, Ms. Stanley noted that though there is not a public beach area at this time, it is possible that as development continues, one could be built by a developer
in the future. Ms. Stanley then spoke about the Lake Opera tions Center by the 897 bridge that was open until 5:00 p.m. that day and how the lake will need to come up at least 10 ft, be deemed safe by the Texas Parks & Wildlife and NTM WD with the board of direc tors approving its opening, before the public boat ramps can be used.
All in all, it was a nice event for an impressive lake with a good Texas name and as I left, I couldn’t help but think how we all need to pray for rain.

Genesis: Chapter 1 Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)
In Genesis Chapter 1 we have an account of God’s creative work. From this passage of Scripture we learn many great truths about God. We see Him both as Creator and our

sustaining Shepherd. He is pictured as three persons in one: God, the Father; God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit. Genesis 1:1 says that God created both the Heavens and the earth. In Genesis the Bible speaks to the “hovering” of the Holy Spirit. Then in Genesis 1:26 God the Father says “Let us make man in our im age”. Many discount the Biblical account of the cre ation of the universe, but I am in complete agreement with the scriptural story, and at peace in my heart with the God of the plan.
My thought for the week is “God is Creator”. I pres ent Him to you as God, Our Father. By way of summa rizing this chapter I mention these things as truths to be lieve.
1. He created the world from nothing. Therefore He is the ultimate cause of all that exists.
2. The creation was ac
complished in orderly fashion. God is not the author of chaos and confu sion. From the beginning God had both a design and a plan and He completed his work in six consecutive days.
3. Man is the crown of God’s creation. When God made man He had already provided for man’s needs.
4. God has given to us the responsibility of taking care of His world.
We are blessed by many other names and titles that help us to understand God better. Just a few are: Deliverer (Psalms 70:5), Dwelling Place (Psalms 90:1), Fortress (Jeremiah 16:19), Father of Mercy and Father of Lights (Dr. George W. Knight).
God, our Father is worthy of our loyalty and worship. He is the great truth to live by.
Hell is Designed
12-18-18
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Hell is a real place with a real purpose. Hell is the place of punishment for the Wicked and Ungodly.
Hell is designed for the Dev il and his followers. Jesus spoke of those that refused to obey God, and said unto them, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). He also said that “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gath ereth not with me scattereth abroad” (Matthew 12:30). Hell is designed for the Devil, his followers, and those that against Christ.
Hell is designed for the dis obedient. Paul records that Jesus will come “in flaming fire taking vengeance on them
that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).
Hell is designed for the un godly. John writes that “the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murder ers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death” (Revela tion 21:8). Solomon reminds us that “the wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the na tions that forget God” (Prov erbs 9:17).
Hell is designed for the im moral. Jude informs us that “even as Sodom and Gomor rha, and the cities about them
in like manner, giving them selves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suf fering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 1:7).
Hell is designed for those whose names are not found in the book of life. John said that “death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whoso ever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14-15).
With this understanding, we are left with a choice.
“The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath” (Proverbs 15:24). Jesus tells us “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruc tion, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait
Sunday Morning Re-take “How great Thou art!”
We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning!
The Bible tells us in Psalm 115:1, “Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth’s sake.” Too many times, we tend to let the com pliments and the praise that we get for something that we’ve done, or a blessing that we’ve received go to our heads. As I have said before, this is a very dangerous thing. We need to give this praise to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He is worthy of our praise. We serve a great and mighty God! As one of my favorite hymn
writers, Fanny Crosby wrote, “To God, Be the Glory, great things He hath done!”
This week’s hymn is another one that I’m pretty sure we are all familiar with. The late George Beverly Shea was one of many great singers who would sing this classic hymn.
“O, Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder, Consider all the worlds Thy hands hath made; I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Sav iour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Sav iour God, to Thee, How great Thou art! How great Thou art!”
If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day!

You have likely noticed a change in our delivery process. We are now mailing to all residents instead of throwing home deliveries in Bonham, Honey Grove and Ladonia. This major change for us is an attempt to clean up the streets and yards when papers are not picked up by residents, we believe this will create a cleaner environment. This change will also help those who are unable to get their paper from the yard or driveway. We appreciate you, our readers. Short 19-1A volleyball slates precede assured playoffs for DC, Ector, Savoy
By Rich Hilliard
Don’t blink -- or you just might miss 19-1A volleyball during the 2022 district campaign.
Composed in 2022 of only three teams -- Dodd City, Ector and Savoy -- each team
plays only four 19-1A matches -- with action not having started this sea son until Oct. 6 -- to determine district postseason berths.
With three teams advancing
to the postseason per Class 1Aonly-composed district -- a real ity this season, for the first time since 2013, since 2As and 1As had been geographically aligned together into groupings from 2014-2021-- the trio started
the season already as sured of all reaching the postseason.
For Dodd City, it equates a 28th trip to the playoffs during the last 33 seasons.
For Savoy, the up coming postseason equals an eighth-straight advance. For Ector, which is playing
its first varsity volleyball season this fall after having junior high practices in 2021, the playoffs will be a first-time experience.
The bi-dis trict playoffs will occur Oct. 31-Nov. 1. The 19-1A champion will earn a first-round bye and begin the postseason in the area round later that same week.
