Dam is Complete, Pump Station Startup Underway
reservoir at the Leonard Water Treatment Plant. The goal is to complete that process yet this fall.
The Dam and RWPS
Include:
• 17+ miles of electrical ca bles (some 2-3 inches thick).
• More than 3.5 miles of con duit — the pipe that holds and supports electrical wire.
• Currently three (and even tually nine) 11-by-8-foot-tall pumps. Each will be able to transmit around 35,000 gallons of water per minute.
Once the RWPS is energized, crews will pump some water to the Leonard Water Treatment Plant, where it will be used to test various components of the water treatment process.
VOTE
Your choice not to vote adds nothing to candidates you dislike. That’s true. It does add to the other side, no matter which other side it might be.
Bois
Lake dam was deemed substantially complete on Au gust 26. Construction crews connected power to the sys tem that operates the gates to release water back to Bois d’Arc Creek. This was the last of many electrical elements
finished at the dam, including power for the intake tower’s gates and bridge crane.
North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) operators have been trained to operate the gates; much of that work will be handled remotely from the Leonard Water Treatment
Plant. Freese and Nichols worked closely with NTMWD to ensure a smooth startup and meet all contractual require ments.
Now that local transformers have been powered up, various electrical components of the
Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) are being energized and individually tested. Once all the smaller, individual piec es are tested and adjusted, the team will energize the entire station and be ready to pump water to the terminal storage

All About Dogs
Pampered Paws Dog Hotel
You’ll Either be a Leader or a Follower
By Gregg Flowers
Dogs are pack animals, be ing the direct descendants of the Gray Wolf. In other words, Max is just a few chro mosomes away from being a wolf, and the way he sees his situation in your home, is “this is my pack”. In this situation, you will either be a leader or a follower. Obviously, the hu mans have to be the leaders.
let him near his food while he was eating. We can’t allow these things either. Max also understands whoever goes through the door first is the leader, and probably the most profound “message” about who’s who in your pack, is the leash...because dogs inherent ly understand whoever leads on the leash, is the leader.

City of Bonham City Council Meeting
There are a number of ways we project our leadership to our dog, as dogs don’t have a conversation about this sort of thing. We constantly give our dog (begin ital>messages<end ital) that either reinforce our leadership, or not so much. It’s all about the messages. No higher ranking dog would allow a subordinate to jump on him or put his paws on him in any way. He certainly wouldn’t let a lower ranking dog put his mouth on him, or
Giving the right message about your rank by disallow ing any dominant behaviors as mentioned above, is the first step in establishing yourself as a “higher ranking dog”. And being the leader doesn’t mean “showing him who’s boss” or being mean or ugly. The pack leader is simply the one who makes the rules and bound aries. Rules and boundaries that are non-negotiable. And Max inherently understands if you’re making appropri ate rules and boundaries, you must outrank him. - Sticking to your guns on these few things in a determined fashion, is very important to creating a balanced pack in
home.

The first four years (19481952) of my life’s work were devoted to weekend minis tries in part-time churches. They were times of intense learning. My college and seminary studies gave me

a formal education, but the on-the-job training of stu dent pastorates laid the foundation for the sixty years of service that lay ahead.
It was in the early summer of 1951 that my story for this week began to unfold. With my wife’s graduation from East Texas Baptist College with a degree in Elemen tary Education a place of employment and a place to live were next on our agenda. This is the time that three people of God’s choosing became valuable servants in the providing for our need. One, upon the recommendation of a school board member in our church community, my wife was employed to teach the second grade in the Pitts burg Independent School District. Two, the superin tendent of the school where

The thought remains un til this day. God has had people in place to help with our every ministry along the way. In my ministry to Bonham and Fannin Coun ty, many of you may have been made available to pro vide help to me. In turn, I have been blessed to have helped countless families in these years.
When God said “I will nev er leave you or forsake you.” He had in mind people help ing people as one way to make His presence known. May we be faithful to live in such a way that others can see Jesus in us!!

Fannin County Commissioners Court – BURN BAN In Force
By Rose Schwartz
Tuesday, September 27, 2022, Fannin County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 8:50 a.m., a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present.
2. PUBLIC HEARING: to
hear comments regarding partial closure of CR 4975 in Blue Ridge in Precinct 2; beginning on the east end of County Road 4975 where it intersects with CR 4910 would be closed, making CR 4975 a dead-end road: After Judge Moore read the reason the hearing was called, he invited those with comments to come to the podium. The
first to speak was a landowner with property located on CR 4975 who identified himself as one who had initially signed the petition requesting the road closure but has since decided to withdraw his name as one in favor of the road closure. He cited possible future problems with emergency access (locations not being listed on google maps); mailing addresses; installation of telecom or natural gas; delivery driver access (UPS, Fed-Ex, etc.); and logistics in shipping for his plans of possible future agricultural commerce and/ or construction. After he spoke, approximately five speakers came to the podium who were in favor of the closure, to give their reasons the closure was requested with the primary concern being one of safety for the children living on 4975 as the

ITALIAN SANDWICH SLIDERS
12 Hawaiin Rolls
oz. sliced Genoa salami
oz. Cotta salami
oz. sliced pepperoni
c. sliced banana peppers (hot or mild)
oz. sliced provolone
Tbsp. olive oil
tsp. garlic powder ¼ tsp. dried Italian seasoning pinch of salt and pepper Heat oven to 350 degrees
Instead of cutting the rolls into individual ones, slice the bread crosswise through the middle so you will have 2 big pieces.
Place the bottom part of the rolls on a baking dish. Layer the Genoa salami, pepperoni and Cotta salami on the bread. Place the banana pepper in an even layer on the meat followed by the cheese. Top with the other bread piece. In a small bowl, combine the oil and seasoning. Brush the top of the bread rolls with the seasoned oil. Bake sandwiches for 10 minutes or until the
cheese is melted, the bread rolls are toasty on top and sandwiches are heated through. To serve, slice into 12 individual sandwiches with a serrated knife. You can serve this with a dipping sauce like Ranch dressing and also you can use any combination of meats to your preference. I hope you will give this one a try for the next football game!

road has become plagued with irresponsible non-residents speeding down the single lane road often while children are boarding school buses and/or walking to visit friends in their community. The explanation was given that multiple calls to law enforcement and having a reduced speed limit posted on the road, has not corrected what the residents view as a serious safety issue with one resident citing how she had been run off the road by a motorist driving a vehicle at an extreme rate of speed. The argument was made that all other efforts for a solution to the problem of speeders (judging by alcohol containers being discarded on the road, possibly impaired drivers) and trash being discarded on the road, has not been successful causing the residents to seek a solution of having the road closed to non-residential traffic. Though some residents stated they were open to another possible solution, most were steadfast in believing the closure of the road was the best viable option.
3. PUBLIC HEARING: to hear comments regarding partial closure of Dillard Street in Randolph in Precinct 2; closure to begin at Business 121 North heading north on South Dillard Street for 235 feet, making South Dillard Street a dead-end road: A resident of Randolph residing on South Dillard explained how excessive traffic with many motorists, often speeding, is only increasing and with plans for an RV Storage facility to be built nearby, he fears that
traffic will only increase as the road serves as a shortcut to Hwy 11.
4. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 9:14 a.m.
Immediately following the adjournment of the Public Hearing, Judge Moore first shared the scripture verse Matthew 11:28 before calling into order at 9:14 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Noting that Quorum was established, Judge Moore introduced Director of Missions, Darrell Hathcock, with the Fannin Baptist Association to lead the Invocation. Judge Moore then led the Pledges to America and Texas. There were no Introductions nor were there any speakers for Public Forum.
6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding implementing a burn ban for Fannin County –County Judge: Judge Moore noted he had spoken with Fannin County’s Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson, who advised that pretty much all of the Fire Chiefs in Fannin County were in agreement that the current dry conditions warrants a burn ban to be once again implemented for Fannin County. After a brief discussion, Commissioner Magness made the motion to have a burn ban implemented for Fannin County. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Self and passed unanimously.
7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: A
motion was made, seconded and passed to approve payment of bills.
8. Discussion, consideration and action to approve permanent move of polling location in Ravenna from the Community Center at 107 Main Street to the City Hall of 103 N. Main Street in accordance with Texas Election Code 43.002 – County Judge for County Clerk: A motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the move with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed unanimously.
9. Discussion, consideration and action to approve a onetime severance of 1 acre from a 5-acre tract on CR 2900, Property ID# 113835 in Dodd City – Commissioner Precinct 4: Commissioner Self read the details on all requirements having been met for this to be approved and a motion was made by Commissioner Lackey to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion. The motion passed.
10. Discussion, consideration and action to approve a one-time severance 1 acre from a 21.34-acre tract on CR 5010, Property ID# 86906 in Blue Ridge –Commissioner Precinct 2: Commissioner Self once again read the details noting all had been done to clear the way for this to be approved after which he made a motion to approve. Press Release - This fall
the 20 districts of the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) will be hosting Fall Conferences around the state. The District X conference will be held at Region 10 in Rich ardson on October 24, 2022 from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM.
As members of TRTA, we will convene to enjoy fellow ship, prepare for the upcoming November General Election, hear from candidates for po
litical office, and discuss their advocacy plans for the 88th Legislative Session that be gins in January 2023!
Our members know that TRTA’s top priority for the coming legislative session is for the Legislature to pass a substantial, meaningful costof-living adjustment (COLA) for TRS retirees.
Now is the time for TRTA members to come together to educate future elected officials
about the impact inflation has had on retirees and why a COLA is much needed and in fact, necessary, for retirees to enjoy their retirement with dignity.
Consider joining TRTA and attend the fall conference. TRTA Executive Director Tim Lee will be the keynote speaker, and you won’t want to miss his informative and inspirational speech!
Join TRTA by going to trta.
org or visit a local chapter meeting. The Fannin County Retired Teachers and School Personnel Chapter will meet on October 4, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church Williams Educational Building in Bon ham at 2 PM.
For questions or more infor mation, contact Debbie Gove at 214-403-6230.
Remember: TRS MANAG ES our money. TRTA PRO TECTS our money.

Oxygenating the Lake
Creative Arts Center Welcomes Author, Larry Tipton
Oxygen is pumped from these tanks and into Bois d’Arc Lake to improve the lake’s health.
Press Release - As crews wrapped up ef forts at the dam, they also finished another important and unique component—oxygen ation for the lake. A team connected and pulled 23,000 total feet of diffuser hoses out into the lake, submerging them beneath the surface. These hoses were then connected to a liquid oxygen tank system that converts the oxygen to gas and then pipes it into the water. Diffusing oxygen in this way will help maintain the quality of the water deliv ered and support the lake’s habitat.

2022 FAIR SCHEDULE
Times of trouble remind us Texas open government laws are here for everyone
By Kelley Shannon - Across the state, Texans are keeping a closer eye on their govern ment. They’re asking questions and demanding information. There’s a renewed awareness of our transparency laws.
Times of trouble can remind us all that the people have a right to know, and Texas certainly has been enduring months of difficulty following the mass shooting at Robb El ementary School in Uvalde.
Parents, community resi dents, journalists and others want details about the Uvalde tragedy to learn exactly how law enforcement responded and how the young man who committed the killings possi bly might have been stopped before that day in May. The hope is to prevent a repeat of this horror and to ensure ac countability.
We are still waiting for infor mation.
The information that has trickled out has sometimes been inaccurate or incomplete. For many, this deepens the pain. Shining light on truth is necessary, even when it’s tough to bear.
The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas has urged law enforcement and govern ment officials at all levels –school district, city, county, state and federal – to promptly release critical records related to the shootings. Multiple news organizations filed a law suit this summer against the Texas Department of Public Safety to force the release of information such as 911 calls, video and police statements. The case is pending.
These barriers to public re cords and other transparency
and First Amendment issues are on the agenda at the FOI Foundation’s state conference
Sept. 29 in Austin. The key note panel will be a bipartisan preview of open government measures in the 2023 Texas Legislature with Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, and Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dal las. Members of the public are welcome to register and attend the conference.
Throughout the year, the FOI Foundation helps Texans un derstand and use the state’s Public Information Act and Open Meetings Act and pro tects the rights of free speech and free press.
It isn’t always a catastrophe that spurs interest in transpar ency. Citizens want to know more about public spending on special projects or con tracts or tax breaks for private companies. Taxpayers want to ask questions about a school district’s policies, local con struction permitting or health inspections.
Fortunately, many public of ficials understand they are the custodian of the people’s in formation, not the owners of it, and they promptly provide it. But that’s not always the case.
Some governments try to block information access by intimidating requesters with unreasonably large cost es timates for producing public records. Some wrongly tell the public they must use an online request form to obtain records.
(An online form is optional.
A written Texas Public Infor mation Act request can also be made through email or on paper.) Lately, certain govern ments have come up with un usual methods to try to thwart

the free flow of information.
Kyle City Council members recently signed confidentiality agreements stating they could not talk to the public about matters discussed in a closed meeting, the Hays Free Press reported.
However, elected officials have a First Amend
ment right to speak, if they choose to, and a confidential ity agreement doesn’t override the Public Information Act in determining which records are accessible to citizens.
During the COVID-19 pan demic a number of govern ment agencies tried to make up
their own rules about the Pub lic Information Act by decid ing not to respond to requests when their employees were working remotely, even though government was open for other business.
Appreciation for the people’s right to know is growing, and
it’s a good thing. Elected lead ers need to recognize this and encourage it.
Access to public informa tion is essential for exercising the right to speak out and hold government accountable as we participate in our democracy.
Press Release - The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation will hold a C.A.S.T. for Kids event

Participants must preregister online at https:// castforkids/event/lake bonham and the space is limited to the first 40 children who register.

the beds and mulch for winter. Check patio plants carefully for pests before bringing them inside. Briefly set pots in a tub of water to flush out fire ants.
Planting Tips: Garden- There is still time to plant carrots, garlic, leaf let tuce, radishes, spinach, and turnips. Set seeds in the ground during the first week in Octo ber. While the weather is still good, prepare the area desig nated for planting English peas so it will be ready in late Janu
ary/early February.
Flowers- Fall Asters are a beautiful addition to a fall garden, however, they will die back at the first frost. Early October is the time to dig and divide spring perennials such as phlox, daylilies, iris, Shasta daisies, coneflowers, gloriosa daisies, hardy amaryllis, and hostas. Place bulbs that re quire 45 days of chilling in the refrigerator to prep them for December planting. Plant win ter annuals such as pansies. Fertilize with a high nitrogen soluble fertilizer to help them get established.
Lawn- Seed cool season grasses such as ryegrass and fescue now for a temporary winter cover. Perennial rye is easier to care for than annual rye.
Landscape- Planting trees and shrubs at this time gives them time to get root systems estab lished before winter.
Pruning Tips: Prune old flowers of lateblooming plants to keep them looking attractive. Continue mowing lawns until the first
frost stops growth. Wait to mow a lawn over-seeded with ryegrass or fescue until the new blades are coming up. Mowing sooner could suck up the seeds. Remove damaged limbs from trees and shrubs.
Wait until February to do ma jor shape-up work on shrubs.
Fertilizing Tips:
Fertilize any warm season lawns that missed earlier fer tilizing sometime in the first week of this month. Feed fes cue and ryegrass with high-ni trogen fertilizer in the middle of the month.
Watch for: Early season frost- On calm clear nights frost can form on leaves at temperatures in the high 30’s. Keep frost cover handy to protect plants. Bring tender potted plants in at night. October can be a dry month so check soil and water when needed.

nin and Grayson counties. This mile stone comes on the annual Adult Edu cation and Family Literacy Week, set for September 1824 to remind us that reading, writing and basic math remain an elusive target for millions of adults nationwide, includ ing 21% of Fannin County resi dents.
According to ProLiteracy, an organization advancing the
cause of basic education in the U.S. that Grayson College be longs to, more than 43 million adults in the U.S. cannot read, write or do math above a thirdgrade level. Grayson College uses funding provided by the Texas Workforce Commission to improve these levels of com petency for adult learners and help them meet the demands of today’s workforce.
“Here in Fannin County, we know that literacy helps fami lies to be healthier and safer and provides opportunities for adults to support themselves through work, contributing ultimately to the economic growth of Texoma,” said Ashley Trevino, Director of Adult Education and Literacy for Grayson Col lege.
“Low literacy costs the nation more than $2.2 trillion each year in lost productivity, as well as an additional $100-$200 billion in health and safety is sues,” said Mark Vineis, Presi dent and CEO of ProLiteracy. “Every dollar spent on adult literacy and education provides returns through higher employ ment, added tax revenues, re duced welfare payments, and less crime.”
Prospective students interest ed in obtaining their high school equivalency diploma, improv ing their English language pro ficiency or simply seeking to refresh their skills in math and reading can enroll for no-cost classes at any time by calling (903) 463-8784 to make an en rollment appointment. Regis tration without an appointment is available on Wednesday, Oc tober 5 or Wednesday, October 19 between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm. Sunday Morning Re-take
Hello everyone!
What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning!
There is a wonderful promise given to us from God in 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” I know that I reference this verse quite a lot, but the reason I do is because our nation has a difficult time understanding and holding to this promise. Why anyone wouldn’t want to hold to this promise is beyond me. This is one of the greatest promises of the Bible!
That being said, this week’s hymn reference was written by Clara H. Scott in 1895. This is not just a hymn, but also a prayer.
“Open my eyes that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me.
Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
Open my ears that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear, and while the wave notes fall on my ear, ev’rything false will disappear. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine!”
If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church! Like we always say, visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day!

SOS 101: Voter Registration in Texas
AUSTIN — Texas Secretary of State John Scott today released the first installment of ‘SOS 101,’ a series of videos educating voters about election administration in Texas ahead of the November 8, 2022 General Election.
In the first SOS 101 video, Secretary Scott provides an overview of the voter registration process in Texas, including how eligible Texans can register to vote, how county voter registrars process voter registration applications, and how voter rolls in each of Texas’ 254 counties are maintained for accuracy.
Secretary Scott also visits with Brazos County Elections Administrator Trudy Hancock to discuss voter registration in her county.
“Today, you’ll be learning about one of your most important civic duties as a Texas voter - registering to vote,” Secretary Scott says in the video.
“Whether you’re registering to vote for the first time or need to update your information on your record, make sure and visit VoteTexas.gov and select ‘Voter Registration’ to learn everything you need to know about voter registration in Texas.”
“Brazos County is up to 123,000 voters,” Elections Administrator Trudy Hancock explains in the video.
“Right now, we’re having Volunteer Deputy Registrars come in dropping off new applications. We’re a college town, we have over 70,000 students here, so they’re working hard at the campus to get those young folks registered.”
Hancock joined Secretary Scott in reminding eligible Texas voters that the deadline
to register for the November 8, 2022 General Election is Tuesday, October 11th.

SOS 101: Voter Registration in Texas covers the following key topics:
1. Eligibility Requirements
In Texas, you are eligible to register to vote as long as you are:
A United States citizen;
A resident of the county where you submit your voter registration application;
At least 18 years old on Election Day. Not a convicted felon (you may be eligible to vote if you have completed your sentence, probation, and parole); and
Not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
2. Completing Your Application
If you’re a new voter in Texas, you have several options when registering to vote, including:
• Registering to vote when obtaining a Texas Driver License or Texas ID card at the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS);
• Registering to vote online when renewing, replacing or updating your Texas Driver License or Texas ID card; or
• Complete, sign and send a voter registration application to your county voter registrar.
If you are already registered to vote and simply need to update information on your voter registration recordsuch as your address, name or identification number(s) - you can do so online at Texas.gov. Remember to make sure
your voter registration application is postmarked by Tuesday, October 11th to vote in the November 8th General Election.
3. How Your County Voter Registrar Processes Your Application
When your county voter registrar receives your voter registration application, the registrar will enter your information into the statewide voter registration database - the Texas Election Administration Management (TEAM) system.
Some Texas counties choose to use their own third-party vendors that are responsible for communicating with the TEAM system to ensure all voter registration information is updated in a timely manner.
Once the registration information is entered in TEAM, it goes through a process called ‘Live Check’ - which verifies the Driver License, ID and/or partial Social Security number (last 4 digits) on your registration application with DPS and the Social Security Administration.
Once your registration passes the Live Check process, you should receive your voter registration certificate from your county voter registrar in the mail within 30 days.
If you don’t receive your voter registration certificate in the mail in time to vote - don’t worry, you can still vote! You aren’t required to show your registration certificate to vote in person - just be sure to bring one of 7 approved forms of photo ID for voting, and know what forms of ID you can bring if you don’t possess and can’t reasonably obtain one.
4. Verify Your Voter Registration Status
Once you’ve submitted your
2022 ‘VoteReady’ Grassroots Tour
Press Release - The ‘VoteReady’ grassroots tour began visiting Texas cities in late August 2022. It will remain on the road through the November 2022 election, making appearances and stops at community events including senior expos, county fairs, sporting events, and music and arts festivals. The tour utilizes a mobile digital truck which shares messaging on the campaign as it rolls from city to city. The tour can be followed along on social media for a look at what part of the state it is at any given week.
While at events, the
tour’s brand ambassadors interact with the public with an interactive game and informational materials
designed to educate voters about the ID requirements for voting in person and by mail in Texas.

5. Voter List Maintenance
The Texas Secretary of State’s office follows state and federal law in ensuring the voter rolls in each of Texas’ 254 counties stay up-to-date and accurate, and that ineligible voters are removed from the rolls.
For example, an average of between 10-15 thousand deceased voter registration records are removed from the voter rolls statewide each month in Texas. Texas counties report monthly cancellation numbers to our office, which show how many registrations were cancelled, and for what reason.
Because Texans move often, tens of thousands of duplicate
registrations are cancelled each month. This ensures that no person is registered at more than one address, in more than one county, or in more than one state.
Voter registrations can also be cancelled when a voter is found to be:
Serving time for a felony conviction; A non-U.S. citizen; or Declared mentally incompetent.
For more information on voter registration in Texas, visit www.votetexas.gov/registerto-vote.

same wardens who initially received the videos noticed several of the occupants on the vessel wearing identical hats to those in the video. One of the Wardens humorously asked about the hats and if they knew the individual who had caught the goose in the video. The occupants con firmed they knew him and af firmed their knowledge of the “goose video”. They pointed to a male in the back of the boat and identified him as the “goose capturer”. The War dens asked the identified male to join them on their boat for further questioning. The male admitted he was the one in the video and said his mom had warned him that he was going to get into trouble. He added, “I should’ve listened to my mom!” Wardens explained to the individual the defini tion of “Hunt,” according to Texas law is “To capture, trap, take or kill, or any attempts thereof.” Accordingly, the in dividual was issued a citation for “Hunting Canada Geese in a Closed Season.” He was also issued a written warning for “Hunting Canada Geese by Illegal Means and Methods.” The goose survived.

HELEN
Mrs. Helen Ratledge passed away at home in Whitewright, Texas, on September 6, 2022 at the age of 85. She was born on January 13, 1937, in a farmhouse near Madelia, Minnesota to William and Ruth Siemens. She became a registered nurse at Methodist Kahler in association with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, before becoming an anesthetist at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
She spent her early anesthetist career working part-time and rearing their children. She also served as coordinator and teacher of the children’s worship program at the Gaston Avenue Baptist Church and then at the First Baptist Church at Urbandale in Dallas. She also was the teacher of missionary stories at many different Vacation Bible Schools. After retiring in 2003, she served as a speaker for Stonecroft Ministries in the upper Midwest, and later in Texas and Louisiana. She also taught women’s Bible classes in Minnesota and Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Wilbert Ratledge; their son Philip and wife Christine, with their daughters Jenna and Elise; daughter Rebekah and husband Ronnie, with their daughters Maria and Mia; a sister, Majorie Geary, and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 710 N Center St, Bonham, TX, at 10:30 A.M. on October 22, 2022.
LINDA SUE (BIGGS) MONK
Linda Sue (Biggs) Monk of Ivanhoe, Texas passed away peacefully on September 27, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. She was born on October 16, 1946 in Dallas, Texas to James and Billie Biggs. She attended South Oak Cliff High School. Linda married her childhood sweetheart Norman Monk on March 21, 1963 and they enjoyed 59 years together before his death in May.
Together, they had four children of their own: Norma Partridge of Dodd City, Wendee and James McLaren of Austin, Amber and Jason Parker of El Paso, and daughter-in-law Mandy Monk of Forney. Their additional son, Daniel Grey, joined the family in 2004.
Linda spent years working in the general public and then worked as a data input operator for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Bonham for 10 years. She then returned to the world of academia in 1987 and graduated from Texas A&M with a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and English with a minor in Political Science. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Educational Administration.
Linda went to teach at B. McDaniel Middle School in Denison as a special education teacher. After that, she became a high school English teacher at Sam Rayburn ISD where she enjoyed many students before her retirement from education. She then served 12 years as a trustee for the Sam Rayburn School Board.
She was an active member of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ where she enjoyed studying the perfect word of God. Linda was also a participant of the Fannin County Republican party where she enjoyed engaging in local, state, and national politics in the hopes of saving our country from liberals and progressives.
As a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, she thoroughly enjoyed the last two weeks where the Cowboys earned victories after fourth quarter comebacks; however, we are sure she would be disappointed later in the season as all fans have been for the last 20 years with mediocre finishes.
She leaves a huge whole in the hearts of all who loved and knew her but especially as the matriarch of the Monk family. She leaves behind her three daughters, bonus son and daughter-in-law. She also leaves 14 grandchildren: Miranda Embree, Jessica Huff, JoeDavid Huff, Crissette Campbell, Kendee Long, Caydan Copeland, Kelbey Long, Jayde Brannum, Jerry Parker, Hope Parker, Peyton Parker, Gentry Parker, Kelsea Monk, James Chris Monk, Jr., and McKenna Monk. She also leaves 15 greatgrandchildren: DavidDaniel Roskowske, Aisley Embree, Lochlan Embree, Raynee Peterson, Jett Peterson, Nox Peterson, Tuff Campbell, Brek Campbell, Casen and Cambry Copeland, Leviticus Long, Layne Parker, Noah Parker and Arya Parker. She also has 2 great-great- grandchildren: Zaylie and Zaiden Roskowske. She also leaves her two sisters: Sandy and Steve Smith of Dallas and Cyndy and Paul Teas of Waco as well as too many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to mention.
Linda was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Norman and her parents JE and Billie Biggs of Dallas, her son James (Red) Monk of Forney and grandson Atticus James Parker. Services were held at CooperSorrells at 2022 N. Center, Bonham, Texas on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11:00 am. The family received guests from 6:00-8:00 on Thursday. Interment was at Lamasco Cemetery and was officiated by Brother Mike Dickison of Ivanhoe Church of Christ.
Pallbearers were Jerry Parker, JoeDavid Huff, JC Monk, Jr., Peyton Parker, Jett Peterson, DavidDaniel Roskowske and Jeff Ernst. Honorary pallbearers were Lee Skinner, Larry Gardner, brothers-in-law Steve Smith, Paul Teas, Dale Penn and Mark Poteet.

Joyce was raised in a very religious german luthern home. All have now passed on. Two children were born to Joyce. Anna passed away in the 1970’s from complications during surgery.
Joyce eventually married the man who lived next door to her where she lived in Simi Valley California, Jack Denton, and they ended up moving to Jack’s beloved Texas where he was born and raised. Jim moved with them and always remained close to his mother.
Billy was born on December 15, 1935 to parents, Roy Wheat Blanton and Stella Lavon Calloway Blanton. In his younger workdays, he worked with his dad and granddad in the concrete business. Suicide Prevention Awareness Month: Cohen Veterans Network Calls on Americans to Step Up Against Veteran Suicide
CVN Survey: Nearly onethird (29%) of Americans believe asking someone if they are thinking about taking their own life may make them more likely to kill themselves
Stamford, CT, September 8, 2022 - Veteran suicide is a complex issue. There is no single cause or solution. However, there are steps that can be taken to further suicide prevention efforts.
As September marks Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a not-for-profit philanthropic organization that serves post-9/11 veterans, service members and their families through a nationwide system of mental health clinics, is calling on all Americans to step up against veteran suicide by learning the warning signs of someone at risk, understanding what to say and do in support of someone who may be struggling and knowing the resources available for those experiencing a mental health crisis. The network has developed a webpage dedicated to these actions that anyone can utilize in support of suicide prevention.
In 2019, the veteran suicide rate was 31.6 per 100,000, nearly twice the rate of nonveteran US adults (16.8 per 100,000), according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ 2021 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. The report also found that in 2019 there was an average of 17.2 veteran suicides per day. That equates to 6,261 veteran suicide deaths in 2019, 399 fewer than in 2018.
“We owe it to our nation’s veterans to do all that we can in support of their mental health and well-being,” said Cohen Veterans Network President and CEO Dr. Anthony Hassan. “That includes being proactive when it comes to suicide prevention: become familiar with suicide warning signs, learn what to do and how to approach a loved one that you might be concerned about, and familiarize yourself with the resources available to help manage a crisis scenario. These small steps could have a considerable impact on a veteran’s life.”
CVN’s call to action comes after the organization
Fannin County Septic System Permits
revealed findings from its America’s Mental Health Suicide Prevention Pulse Survey last year. The survey, which looked at Americans’ general knowledge of suicide prevention, discovered a number of strong misconceptions about the topic. Among its key findings:
• Nearly half (45%) of Americans believe that most suicides happen suddenly, without warning or ‘’on a whim.’’
• FACT: Most people who attempt to kill themselves will display warning signs. Recognizing the signs could help prevent suicide. Warning signs include, talking about wanting to die or wanting to kill themselves, withdrawing from family and friends, giving away important possessions, putting affairs in order, such as making a will and more.
• Nearly one-third (29%) of Americans believe asking someone if they are thinking about taking their own life may make them more likely to kill themselves.
• FACT: Talking about suicide can provide relief to someone experiencing suicidal thoughts knowing that someone cares, wants to listen, and is there to help. “Asking about suicidal thoughts or feelings won’t push someone into doing something self-destructive. In fact, offering an opportunity to talk about feelings may reduce the risk of acting on suicidal feelings,” according
to the Mayo Clinic.
“Early intervention is critically important when it comes to suicide prevention,” said Hassan. “That’s why access to care remains a top priority of Cohen Veterans Network. When a military community member raises their hand asking for support, our Cohen Clinics are ready to help.”
Since its inception in April 2016, CVN has provided mental health services to over 42,000 clients. Care is available to post-9/11 veterans, service members and military family members through the network’s 22
Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics across the country. Clients are treated for a wide variety of mental health challenges including PTSD, depression, anxiety, adjustment issues, anger, grief and loss, family issues, transition challenges, relationship problems, and children’s behavioral problems. Treatment is available in person or via CVN Telehealth, face-to-face video therapy.

JAMES SCOTT THOMAS
James Scott Thomas was born May 1, 1955 in Hershey Pennsylvania to Joyce Ann Campbell and Albert Thomas. Jim’s parents separated when he was still a baby with Joyce moving with him to California where several of her brothers and sisters lived. Jim never knew nor met his father. Jim had fond memories of going to his Aunt Joan’s home in Palm Springs for Holidays and family gatherings. He really enjoyed being with his cousins. Jim remembers his grandmother Anna living with him and his mother, he said more than once what a wonderful cook she was. She was also very strict and he said that he never crossed his grandma. Jim didn’t like school much. He thought it a complete waste of his time. Instead of graduating from high school Jim secured employment in the construction field as a heavy equipment operator. In subsequent years, Jim suffered a back injury that caused him to live on disability for the rest of his life. He loved growing up in California! He loved the ocean and the mountains. He loved to hike and fish and enjoyed nature. He was an avid reader always interested in the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of everything. Jim was also reclusive, in that he felt extremely uncomfortable around others and especially in crowds. This made even simple things like attending Church, shopping or even going to the Bank difficult for him. Jim liked to hide behind a ruff exterior, but underneath he had a soft heart. Jim passed away on Friday, May 13th, 2022.

Playing With Numbers: “Vicious” defense, RPO offensive helping young, deep HG succeed under new HFC
By Rich Hilliard
HONEY GROVE -- Ex
plosive offense the last three games -- 141 total points -equated Class 2A-I Honey Grove overwhelming oppo nents.
It helped the Warriors (31) reach the start of District 9-2A-I football -- already having one more win than during all of last season.
However, don’t overlook how few points Honey Grove has also simultaneously al lowed -- only six -- during the winning streak.
“Our defense is vicious,” said first-year Honey Grove head football coach Shane Fletcher, who was hired by the school district in March.
“We fly to the ball,” he said. “We can run -- and are vi cious when we get there.
“We forced seven three-andouts last game and allowed five first downs the last two games -- three of the first downs came on penalties.”
Fletcher brought in a former colleague -- Larry McFarlin -- to coach the Warriors’ de fense.
He most recently worked in 2004 on McFarlin’s staff when the latter was the head coach at Bonham.
“[Coach Mac] has done a heck of a job on defense,” said Fletcher.
“I think (Coach) Mac has made it more understandable what we want to do on de fense than in the past,” said senior Peter Krahn, a middle linebacker and fullback. “We
are better ready to line up right; that helps us stop op ponents.”
Said Fletcher: “I tell (Mac): You stop them; I’ll try to go score.”
“We’ve spread it out, done RPO (run-pass option) and throw sideways on bubbles.
[The players] have had a ball!,” said Fletcher. “We still make mistakes -- a couple go ing in motion -- but we are getting better.”
Ryelan Morris, a freshman quarterback and wide out, has noticed the different of fensive approach Fletcher has brought from Leonard to Honey Grove, which last made the playoffs in 2019.
(Fletcher turned the Tigers
during his 17 years at Leonard into a postsea son regular -- 11 trips during the last 13 sea sons.)
“It has changed com pletely,” said Morris. “In junior high, we ran 90 percent of the time. Now it’s RPO; so we throw a lot more.
“I just look for the best option,” said Morris. “I’m comfortable pass ing, too.
“The first few games were nerve racking ... [Now] I feel I fit good with the team. I feel re spected.”
Morris equates part of an underclassmen-domi nated high school football program for the Warriors, who had 44 in attendance on the first day of work outs on Aug. 1. Honey Grove counts only eight seniors amongst its numbers.
“I think we are doing pretty good. I have a lot of confi dence,” said senior Mayson Woodard, a right guard and nose tackle.
“We have shown to have a lot more speed than last year,” said Woodard. “We work with more intensity and get prepared better.”
“We’ve kept it simple,” said Fletcher of how Honey Grove has adjusted to the changes his arrival has brought.
“We are young, but athlet ic,” he said.
“We have a lot of depth -that helps us.”
