DPS Announces Saturday Appointments through December
AUSTIN – At the direction of Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety is announcing Saturday appointment availability through the end of the year. Many driver license offices
across the state will be offering Saturday appointments for customers needing to renew or replace their Texas DL or ID cards only. DPS began offering additional Saturday appointments
their DLs/IDs expire while the DL offices were closed due to the pandemic. Continuing to offer Saturday appointments through the end of the year for renewal and replacements will give customers additional
at select driver license offices for customers needing to renew or replace their Texas DL or ID cards in September to help alleviate the backlog caused by COVID-19. Nearly 700,000 people statewide had
07/02/19
time to handle their DL transactions. Offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments will begin Saturday, Oct. 3, and continue each Saturday through Dec. 19, with the exception of Nov. 28, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Customers can now book appointments for a specific day and time, up to six months in advance, and show up 30 minutes or less before their scheduled appointment. Customers can check-in using the kiosk inside the office or from their mobile device.

Eternal Vigilance: The Price of Liberty Whether it was our third President, Thomas Jefferson, who originally coined this phrase or one of many visionary leaders who’ve followed, much wisdom can be found in those six little words. Much like the message sent by, “Shall Not Be Infringed” our Founding Fathers were genius in their ability to relay a concise message of Duty and Consequences.

Today, as we prepare for our nation’s 59th Presidential Election, these words ring as true now as they ever have. We, as Americans, MUST be ever vigilant towards the forces that wish to tear our society apart. We do this through the peaceful process of Participation in Government. The old adage is true, Freedom is Not Free! If we want for our children the Blessings of Liberty that we were born into, then we can no longer afford to “sit out” another election. From the local school board candidate to those vying for our nation’s highest office, it is our patriotic duty to become informed and engaged on who will represent us. Words cannot express how honored I am to be listed on the ballot as your Republican Nominee for Fannin County Commissioner – Precinct One. With the help of so many others, I have worked tirelessly towards earning your confidence and vote. This is just the beginning of what you can expect from me once I am sworn into office in January. I still ask for your vote during the General Election on November 3rd. Early voting has been extended to three weeks, beginning October 13th and many safeguards will be in place to ensure your safety. This includes drive-thru “curbside” voting. So PLEASE let’s all commit now to showing up to the polls, thanking the volunteers, and participating in the finest form of government our world has ever known! God Bless! -Edwina Lane

These fall mornings are calling for warmer breakfasts, and a good oatmeal recipe is the best. Wilma Arnold sent me this recipe, and it sounds so good. I do like my oatmeal warm, so I will probably put it in the microwave just long enough to get it warm, but not cooked. I’ll probably give this one a try, because I enjoy oatmeal with a slice of buttered toast. I hope

By Bro. Bill Beasley
Psalm 23: 2-3, 6 “He maketh me to lie down in green pasture: he leadeth me beside the still waters” “He restoreth my soul.” As I have often said, Psalm 23 has held center stage in my life for as long as I can remember. It was in the early years of growing up that I was encouraged to commit to memory the words of this beautiful psalm. It was when I went through some difficult days with my country
in World War II that the message of our caring shepherd gave me a hope to believe in. It was when my Bible had been confiscated by those taking me in to captivity that the words I had hid in my heart became my Bible until freedom came and the word was in my hands again. This psalm has been there for me as I am embraced my calling to the field of church ministry for seventy-five years. Many of the entries in my Pastor’s record reflect the use of these verses to bring comfort to hurting hearts in time of sorrow, or joy and happiness to lives pledged to travel the domestic road together. In Psalm 23:6, we are promised in the end

Press Release - The collections phase of the tax calendar for 2020 has arrived. Soon, Property Tax Statements (Tax Bills) will be mailed to all owners of property in Fannin County. Paying property taxes during COVID: Included in the tax statement is an insert asking for property owners to utilize the self-addressed envelope included with the statement to remit property tax payments in an effort to comply with Governor Abbott’s executive order regarding social distancing and face mask requirements. Utilizing the mail will reduce the risk of exposure and provide a simple and efficient way to pay your property taxes. We will mail a receipt once the payment is processed. Other contactless property tax payment methods include

am currently on the Board of Directors for Bois D’Arc Mud and am president of the Volunteer Fire Department of Telephone. I am well vested in our community and care deeply for the people in it. While we have grown as a district over the last several years, the potential for exponential growth is knocking on our door. This growth can be extremely beneficial for our children’s future. However, you need someone that desires to maintain the structural integrity of Sam
Rayburn ISD. I am that person. I want to work for you as the taxpayer to ensure the Board is making sound decisions with your dollar while continually maintaining a very high standard regarding our children’s academics, athletics and extracurricular endeavors so that they may be better prepared for the future that lies ahead of them. I would appreciate your consideration and vote in the November election. Political Ad Paid for by Bob Payne

credit card and e-check and may be accessed on our website at www.fannincad. org. Contactless payment options are the best way to keep you and our staff healthy. If you own property in Fannin County and do not receive your bill by the end of October, please contact the Fannin Central Appraisal District’s collections department at 903-5838701 to verify your account information and avoid possible delinquency. Things to know regarding your tax statement/bill: Bills are due upon receipt and will become delinquent if not paid before February 1st, 2021. It is important to timely pay your property tax bill and avoid these additional costs. Delinquent taxes accumulate penalties and interest and may result in a lawsuit to collect. Property owners are encouraged to open these statements sooner than later and be proactive in communicating any payment arrangements with the District’s collections staff. NOTE: The appraisal district uses the address indicated on the deed to send notices, bills and other mailings. If the current owner’s actual mailing address is different from what is indicated on the deed, the owner has the responsibility to inform the appraisal district of the change in writing. Simply go to our website at www.fannincad. org click the Forms tab and
click the Change of Address Request. Please do not let the simple process of updating your address keep you from being informed of important property tax matters. Property owners with multiple accounts: Paying property taxes on multiple accounts can be confusing. Owners of multiple accounts are responsible for ensuring they have reconciled all of their properties with all of their bills prior to making payment. Owners of multiple properties often have different names on the accounts. Some accounts may be in a company name, a trust or in various forms of a name (such as J. Smith, John Smith, and Jonathan Smith etc.). Some owners have differing mailing addresses as well. In short, the collectors do not own the property, are not responsible for the tax or to determine how much a person decides to pay. During this phase the collectors receive and post payments and issue receipts. If a person requires assistance in this area they should make arrangements to come to the appraisal district’s office early (October-November) and not wait until the last week of December or January to sort through their tax statements. For a detailed list of Frequently Asked Questions, please go to our website at www.fannincad.org and click the Property Tax Statement post under current news or alerts. Thank you. Michael R. Jones, Chief Appraiser

THE
DEMOCRATIC SIDE
“Without prefix, without suffix, and without apology, I am a Democrat!” -- Speaker Sam Rayburn
SAM RAYBURN “MR. DEMOCRAT” You really have to hand it to those zany Republicans--the word “shame” is not in their vocabulary. A recent letter in these pages suggested that not only would Sam Rayburn be a Republican, today, but so would JFK. It appears that their electoral plan for this cycle is to make Democrats die laughing before they can vote. Mr. Sam advocated for Income and Inheritance Taxes, Low Tariffs, and direct election of U.S. Senators, all of which have been opposed by today’s Republicans. He supported National Health Insurance, Public Housing, Public Education, and increasing the Minimum Wage. Republicans, not so much. Sam Rayburn partnered with FDR to pass the Federal Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, the Public Utility Holding Act of 1935, and the Rural Electrification Act of 1935, rescuing the U.S. economy and bringing electricity and progress to rural America. Republicans called them “socialists.” Yes, that’s Speaker Rayburn behind President Roosevelt as he delivered his “Day of Infamy” speech after Pearl Harbor. He shepherded the strategies of two Democratic Presidents (Roosevelt and Truman) through Congress as they literally saved the world from fascism in WWII (the original Antifa!). And then rebuilt the world afterward! Speaker Sam accepted no money from lobbyists and refused travel payments for speaking tours. In 48 years, he went on one congressional junket (to the Panama Canal) and paid his own way! Members of both parties knew him to be honest and honorable. And he paid his taxes. President Kennedy (D) flew to Dallas in 1961 to see Speaker Sam before he passed. The author of Profiles in Courage said of Rayburn, “He showed enough courage for anybody.” Rayburn’s funeral was attended by Presidents Kennedy (D), Johnson (D), Truman (D) and Eisenhower (R), along with 100 Congress members, foreign dignitaries, and much of the population of Fannin County. Richard Nixon, though, couldn’t be bothered. While it is tragic that the Republicans aren’t able to come up with heroes of their own, Democrats are not sharing ours. SAM RAYBURN WAS MR. DEMOCRAT!
“ SH*THOLE COUNTRIES ” Trump famously called countries in Africa and the Carribean “sh*thole countries.” African countries Rwanda and Senegal have a combined population of about 28 million people. They have had... 328 COVID-19 DEATHS Texas has a population of about 29 million people. We have had... 15,500+ COVID-19 DEATHS Rwanda and Senegal don’t have Republican leaders. Texas does.

Bonham Rotary Club Gives Dictionaries to 3rd Grade Students
By Malinda Allison Once again this fall the Bonham Rotary Club will be giving a dictionary to every third grade student in Fannin County schools. This dictionary project began about 20 years ago, and takes place each fall. The photo below shows Club members preparing the dictionaries for distribution. Members of the Rotary Club deliver the boxes of dictionaries to each campus. In previous years, the Club members could go into the classrooms.
This year, the boxes will be unloaded at the school entrances. Lauri Blake, Rotary Club President, has delivered the dictionaries to Dodd City for several years, and regrets that she will not get to hand out the books to the kids this year. “It is great to see the excitement on the faces of the kids as they get their own dictionary.” Kelly Royce, the Rotary member who has been chairman of this project for seven years, says that she looks forward to the project each year. “The
kids are so proud of their dictionaries. And Rotary is proud to support literacy and education in our County.” The 100 year anniversary of the Bonham Rotary Club is coming up in May 2021. Over the last 100 years the Club has provided fellowship and great programs at its weekly lunch meetings. But in addition the Club has a number of public service projects each year as it contributes to the community. The dictionary project is one of the favorite projects.

Relay is back and bigger than ever!
By Timothy La Vergne II, Event Lead Bonham, Texas -There’s nothing like the feeling of a community coming together to help make a change in the world. That vibe, that feeling of “we’re doing something big here,” is just one of the things that makes Relay For Life of Fannin County, Texas so amazing. We want you to experience this with us. We want you to see how our community comes together. We want you to see how the survivors and caregivers are honored, and we want you to feel the love that is shown during the survivor lap, celebration moments, luminaria ceremony and the list goes on where we remember loved ones lost. All the funds we raise through this event helps the American Cancer Society to create a cancer-free world for future generations. Please join us and let’s make a difference together. The Relay For Life of Fannin County would not be successful without the help of our generous donors, sponsors and volunteers. Because of you, we’ve been able to help thousands of people across the globe and locally with life-saving cancer research studies, crucial patient care programs, and education and prevention initiatives. That’s why it’s so important to get involved in Relay For Life and fundraise-because when you do, you help save lives. Joining Relay For Life of Fannin County is easy. All you have to do is visit us online at www.relayforlife.org/fannincotx,
sign up, and decide how you’d like to be involved individually or as a team. Here are some ways to participate: Team Captains Being a team captain is an important role. It’s up to you to recruit members, set fundraising goals, organize fundraising activities and most of all, and cheer on your team. Participant There are several ways you can get involved as a participant. You can join an existing team, start your own, or volunteer at the event. Either one you choose, we’d love to see you Survivors and Caregivers Survivors and caregivers are the heart of every Relay For Life event. We have activities and events designed specifically for you so you can get to know others in the community. In fact, it’s the largest cancer support network in the world! Volunteer: Relay For Life events wouldn’t be successful fundraisers without passionate event leaders, just like you. And since many Relay events are different, we put together a handful of training materials to help things run
as smoothly as possible. This year’s Relay For Life event will bring our communities together in ways like never before! Grayson and Lamar Counties will be merging with Fannin County as we will be one of the biggest Relay events in Texoma. We will continue to honor individuals who have fought bravely against the merciless disease of cancer. Survivors, their families and all those who have been affected by this disease will come together along with their community to create a united network of support and dedication. The theme for 2021 will be, “Love, Hope, Relay”; inspired by not giving up and continuing the fight, even with everything that has been going on in the world. We can all agree that there is no better time than now! We Relay because of the love and hope we have for our loved ones. Our passion is even stronger now to finish the fight and celebrate more birthdays with family and friends. Fannin County Relay is one of the longest Relay events in this area and also rated the top Relay event in the American Cancer Society - Dallas Region based on participant experience survey scores. We also have sponsorship opportunities available for businesses that would like to team up with our event. If you would like to know more about Relay For Life of Fannin County, please contact Nanette Stockstill, ACS Staff Partner, 817-694-9077, Tim La Vergne II, Event Chair at 903-227-8417 or tlavergneii@cableone. net.

Drilling On TXDOT Right-Of-Way In North Fannin County Mystery Solved
By Tim Meek I f you have driven State Hwy. 78 recently north of Bonham there is an interesting project underway at the intersection of
USGS office in Oklahoma City led me to Chris Schenk and Jon Thomas of the USGS offices in Oklahoma and Denver Colorado. The drilling operation is a standard research project that the USGS carries out all across the country. They are drilling core samples for the study of rock and soil formations. The sample cores are studied and analyzed by Geochemist, Hydrologist and other Data Scientist. So...no oil, gas or water exploration taking place, just professional rock hounds doing their thing!
Recent Weather Sets High Expectations for Archery-Only Season Opener
AUSTIN – Expectations are high for the archery hunting season opening day thanks to recent rain events, mild temperatures and reported deer movement throughout the state. The archery-only season opens on Oct. 3 and runs through Nov. 6. “Recent precipitation throughout Texas has resulted in a flush of new growth on preferred native deer forages and should set the stage for good winter weed production, critical for deer late in the season,” said Alan Cain, 6545 US 70 White-tailed Deer Program Mead, OK Leader for the Texas Parks 580-931-3240 and Wildlife Department (TPWD). “This is quite a change from the brown and brittle range conditions experienced in July and August.” Cain said that hunters and landowners are reporting exceptional antler quality, as seen on trail cameras or while scouting their favorite deer hunting locale. He adds that even though the western Panhandle of the state is still experiencing somewhat dry 6545 US 70 conditions, significant imMead, OK pacts on deer season are not 580-931-3240 expected. TPWD biologists estimate that the state’s deer population is around 5.5 million deer, or a density of 49.25 deer per 1,000 acres. However, that density is not uniform across the state and those areas with better habitat tend to support higher deer populations. White-tailed deer and mule deer are Chronic Wasting Disease-susceptible animals. 6545 US As 70 such, prior to hitting the Mead, OKTPWD asks that huntfield, 580-931-3240 ers review CWD information to find area testing requirements and carcass movement restrictions in CWD Containment and Surveillance Zones. While the archery-only season kicks off the first weekend of October, the general season opener is still more than a month away on Nov. 7. The general season runs through Jan. 3, 2021 in the North Zone and Jan. 17, 2021 6545 in USthe70South Zone. A special youth-only gun deer season Mead, OK is set for Oct. 31- Nov. 1 and 580-931-3240 Jan. 4-17, 2021. Box 159, Bailey, Texas 75413, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0013584001 (EPA I.D. No. TX0107719) to authorize the discharge of treated wastewater at a volume not to exceed a daily average flow of 26,000 gallons per day. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and not part of the application or notice. For the exact location, refer to the application. https://tceq.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=db5bac44afbc468bbddd360f8168250f& marker=-96.166666%2C32.423611&level=12 ADDITIONAL NOTICE. TCEQ’s Executive Director has determined the application is administratively complete and will conduct a technical review of the application. After technical review of the application is complete, the Executive Director may prepare a draft permit and will issue a preliminary decision on the application. Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments. PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose. Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period. TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. NOTICE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATION AND INTENT TO OBTAIN WATER QUALITY PERMIT RENEWAL PERMIT NO. WQ0010538001 APPLICATION. City of Dodd City, P.O. Box 129, Dodd City, Texas 75438, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0010538001 (EPA I.D. No. TX0057169) to authorize the discharge of treated wastewater at a volume not to exceed a daily average flow of 48,000 gallons per day. The domestic wastewater treatment facility is located approximately 2,600 feet southwest of the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 897 and State Highway 56, and approximately 2,500 feet southeast of the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 2077 and State Highway 56, in Fannin County, Texas 75438. The discharge route is from the plant site to an unnamed tributary; thence to Bullard Creek; thence to Bois d’Arc Creek; thence to the Red River Below Lake Texoma. TCEQ received this application on July 14, 2020. The permit application is available for viewing and copying at City of Dodd City City Hall, 304 South Caney Street, Dodd City, Texas. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and not part of the application or notice. For the exact location, refer to the application. https://tceq.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=db5bac44afbc468bbddd360f8168250f& marker=-96.069444%2C33.570555&level=12 ADDITIONAL NOTICE. INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/cid. Search the database using the permit number for this application, which is provided at the top of this notice. AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION. Box 13087, Austin, Texas 78711-3087. Please be aware that any contact information you provide, including your name, phone number, email address, and physical address will become part of the agency’s public record. Dear Sir, I would like to know why is the government allowing people in the Real Estate business to gouge people when it comes to buying a home. Has the public looked in the newspaper and seen how high the cost is for a small structure? I believe when the Real Estates stand before God they will have to give an answer. I’m so thankful by the Grace of God I own my own place, something is not right. God Bless. Sincerely yours, George Perry McClellan, Jr

Honey Grove Library Receives Texas Reads Grant
Press Release - The Honey Grove Library and Learning Center is pleased to announce that it has been selected as one of only 9 libraries in Texas to receive a Texas Reads grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for 2020-2021. This year’s award of $9,200 will be used to finance the Honey Grove Library’s “Families Read Together” literacy programs. The Honey Grove Library also received a Texas Reads grant for 2019-2020, and with those funds was able in the spring of 2020 to partner with the Honey Grove ISD to provide an after-school reading program to 1st - 5th grade students. Honey Grove ISD teachers and Library volunteers worked with students at the Library after school one afternoon a week to promote reading skills and a love of books. Due to coronavirus restrictions the after-school program ended in March. Recognizing the need for reading programs for our young readers, this past sum-

mer the Library was able to deliver programming both online and in-house while maintaining local and state coronavirus restrictions. One program brought young elementary school students back to the Library for reading and activities. In another program Debbie Bowie, our Children’s Librarian, had story time with individual families by appointment. An online book study of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane provided an engaging literacy experience for participants. The Honey Grove Library’s “Families Read Together” grant will fund a variety of programs including several targeting our community’s Hispanic families. We are fortunate that Sandra Rubio is instructing “Technology and ESL” classes which are designed to assist these families with the challenges of using electronic devices to support their children’s school education. She is also offering “Bilingual Storytime” for individual families by appointment on Saturday
mornings. Mitzi Sherwood, Library Director, said: “The financial support from these grants enables the Library to offer a rich variety of literacy programs. We appreciate the support of the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.” Rhonda Cunningham, Chairman of the Hall-Voyer Foundation which operates the Library, said: “One of the Library’s primary missions is literacy, and we are proud of these programs which further reading and love of books.” The Honey Grove Library and Learning Center, located on the Square in Honey Grove, recently completed a significant renovation as a result of a successful Capital Campaign. The Texas Reads grant is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (Grant #LA-246193OLS-20).

Two Fannin Co. teams assured of, two vying for 16-2A v’ball playoffs berths at midpoint 5/5/20
Head coach Ashley Anderson (center) speaks in August with the Trenton Lady Tigers. Members of Savoy’s Lady Cardinals listen during a huddle in September to head coach Marci Streetman.
Members of Dodd City’s Lady Hornets meet on the court in August. By Rich Hilliard Two Fannin County teams started 16-2A volleyball this season assured of being Class 1A postseason representatives of the district. Two more are vying to claim half of the available berths to the 2A postseason from 16-2A, as districtBonham play reached its midpoint on Sept. 29. Dodd City had a 4-3 district record at the midpoint, keeping the Lady Hornets on track again to
garner the No. 1 seed from 162A to the 1A postseason, with Savoy (0-7 in district) again as the No. 2 seed. The Lady Hornets’ district wins have come against 2A Trenton, 2A Wolfe City, Savoy and 2A Sam Rayburn -- en route to a 26th postseason during the last 31 years. Ector Meanwhile, Trenton reached the midpoint at 3-4 in district play, getting closer to a sixthstraight postseason. The Lady Tigers garnered first-
half wins over Savoy and Wolfe City -- in a 24-hour period, having to play the latter as a makeup match due to a COVID-19 postponement -- as well Sam Rayburn. The Lady Rebels reached the midpoint at 1-6, as they compete this fall in their first varsity district in the sport and for a postseason spot. Class 2A Tom Bean resided alone atop 16-2A at 7-0 at the midpoint. The playoffs for Class 4A-1A
Members of the Sam Rayburn Lady Rebels complete a huddle in August with head coach John Folse. schools will be Oct. 29-31, starting with bi-district matches. Bi-district opponents for 16-2A postseason qualifiers will come via 15-2A. For the 2A qualifiers, potential opponents include: Italy, Itasca and Rio Vista. The top 16-2A seed to the 2A postseason earns a bi-district bye, since 152A only includes three 2A teams.
Dodd City, ranked No. 16 in the Sept. 29 Class 2A-1A poll by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, and Savoy, which will make its sixth-straight postseason, in bi-district will face Avalon, Blum, Covington, Kopperl or TCL-Arlington. Of these, Blum placed at No. 18 in the same poll.

By Rich Hilliard Midway through District 11-3A play, Bonham sits in position to make a thirdstraight volleyball postseason appearance. The Lady Warriors reached the district play midpoint at 4-3 on Sept. 29. Wins against Whitewright, Leonard and Howe -- and outlasting Bells in five games -- during the first half of play
have Bonham amongst the top half of 11-3A -- a.k.a,, would make the playoffs, if the season ended on Sept. 29. Last fall, the Lady Warriors made their deepest postseason run in 11 years -- a trip to the regional quarterfinals -- after qualifying as the runner-up in their previous district. Meanwhile, Leonard has kept its chances for a sixthstraight postseason appear-
ance possible with a 2-5 district record with wins over Whitewright and Howe. No. 6 Gunter and No. 25 Blue Ridge led 11-3A at the midpoint with undefeated records. The scheduled first showdown between the two on Sept. 29 was moved to Oct. 3 -- the second of two consecutive district matches postponed by Gunter due to COVID-19. Postseason play for Class 4A-1A schools will start Oct. 29-31, with bi-district
matches. Competition in the first round of the playoffs for 113A schools will come via 123A: Commerce, Edgewood, Grand Saline, Lone Oak, Paris Chisum, Pattonville Prairiland and Emory Rains. Amongst those potential bidistrict opponents, two appeared in the Top 25 of the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings for Class 3A: No. 12 Emory Rains and No. 13 Prairiland.

tance to that number of people without referring them to agencies and providers in surrounding counties. This being a truly relevant and troubling issue for our area that is considered a resource desert an active group of people has gathered to focus on the mental health of our citizens. This group consisting of community leaders, public school personnel, mental health providers, law enforcement, charitable organizations, and public servants has gathered to form the Fannin County Behavioral Health Leadership Team (FBHLT). The FBHLT has been meeting as a whole group every other month. Three subcommittees meet regularly to discuss, plan, and implement mental health services and programs. Each of these subcommittees has a targeted focuses; reducing the negative stigma associated with mental health issues, identifying and developing resources, and creating resources for the resiliency of our youth. Two of our prominent citizens Co-Chair this organization, Bill Wilson of McCraw Oil Company and The Honorable Judge Lori J. Blake who presides over the 336th Judicial District Court in Fannin County, Texas “Like all of the individuals serving on the FBHLT, I am aware of the great need many of our residents have.” Stated Judge Blake. She agreed to serve as the Co-Chair of the FBHLT because she is convinced the
fication and development of mental health services for Fannin County residents. In her professional experience working as a District Judge she stated that about 35 to 40 percent of the criminal cases and Child Protection cases involve individuals who suffer from mental health issues. Judge Blake also serves on one of the three subcommittees that focus on identifying and developing resources for our community. One of her team members, Rick Sheddy who formerly served on the Fannin County Hospital Authority, Judge Blake states, “He has done a tremendous job identifying resources that can be applied to proven programs.” She further stated, “By adding resources to the small but successful programs we can grow those programs and then increase the number of people served in Fannin County.” At this time the FBHLT is seeking a 501(c)(3) status and will apply for grants and accept contributions to develop and augment mental health services for our Fannin County residents. Judge Blake added, “There is much work to be done in the area of mental health in Fannin County, but the future looks bright!” We thank all of the active members of the Fannin County Behavioral Leadership team for their part in helping the members of our community who suffer from mental health issues by creating solutions and support.
