From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17 Drawing Nearer to God
By Bro. Bill Beasley “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” James 4:8 f (NASB) Recently I read a story that speaks to the thought that I would like to share with you this week. The thought was discovered in a book written by a staff member I worked with in the 1960’s. The book is devotional in nature. Its title is “Reed All About It.” Its subtitle is “Daily News from Good News.” Drawing nearer to God is not only what

God wants us to do it is what we need to do as well. James 4:8 suggests that God’s closeness depends on our desire and willingness to be close to Him. The story to which I refer is of a married couple in conversation as they were driving down the road. The wife turned to her husband and said, “What’s happened with us?” “What do you mean?” the husband asked. She replied, “We are not like we used to be.” He replied with a question, “What does that mean, how did we used to be?” His wife replied, “We were close. We were more connected. In fact, a perfect example is we used to hold hands, and we would sit right next to each other.” The husband then turned to her and said, “Who moved?” The biblical principle il-
fellowship of His church, as it is intended and it will warm your heart. To be faithful in your commitment to these steps will bring a revival to your walk with Him. The presence of the Holy Spirit will bear witness to your spirit and you will feel His nearness once again.

lustrated in this story is one that we must not forget. If we are not as close to God as we have been in earlier times it is us that have moved – not God. To get back to where we want to be several things are to be considered. 1. Recall as much as you can about your acceptance of Jesus as your Savior. Remember the joy that was yours at that moment in time. Claim that joy once more as His child. 2. Fall in love again with the Bible, His word. The result will be you will fall in love once more with its author. 3. Make prayer a part of your daily walk with God. 4. Put on the WHOLE armor of God and then exercise it and stretch its muscles. 5. Exercise your faith, for it will confirm His presence. 6. Plant your life in the

If you haven’t eaten lunch at Hickory BBQ, you have missed a treat. Ruth Blevins and her crew make the best barbecue, but also some delicious sides. Ruth is a great cook, and she humbly gave me this recipe. I say that because I had the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful recipe at a church dinner, and asked, well, almost begged her, for this one. You really need to try it. It’s great! PINEAPPLE CONGEALED SALAD 1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple in natural juice 1 pkg. (6 oz.) lemon gelatin 1 small (4 oz.) pkg. Philadelphia cream cheese, room temperature ½ cup mayonnaise ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup chopped pecans Boil pineapple with juice in medium saucepan and add lemon gelatin. Stir until gelatin is dissolved and remove from heat. While gelatin is still warm, add softened cream cheese and stir until fully melted. Stir in mayonnaise until fully mixed. Add chopped celery and pecans. Pour into a large glass baking dish and refrigerate until congealed, about 4 hours. Serve with saltine crackers. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Creative Arts Center CALL FOR ART!
Press Releases: The Creative Arts Center’s next exhibit is coming up and, as always, all artists are welcome to enter. The theme for the show which runs October 18 through November 30 is “Round in Circles.” All media will be accepted but circles, ellipses and the like must be the primary subject while avoiding straight lines and sharp angles. Artwork will be accepted from Wednesday, October 9 through Wednesday, October 16 and the exhibit will go up on Friday, the 18th. “I hope that anyone who has recently entered artwork at the Fannin County Fair will consider entering our show if their work fits in with the theme,” said Creative Arts Center Executive Director Lisa Avila. “Especially the young artists - we love to have them bring work into the gallery and get a chance to have their art hang on our walls. It’s a chance most artists don’t ever get and we are lucky to have this opportunity for artists young and old in our community.” Artists who are members of the CAC may enter at no charge and non-members may enter at $25 per person. One to three pieces of art may be entered by each artist. Youth artists may always enter CAC exhibits at no charge. Anyone interested should go to the CAC website for more information at www.creativeartscenterbonham.com where they can find info and entry forms or call the center at 903-6402196.

Fannin County Community Ministries; For Want Of Food, A Family, An Adult Or Child Will Not Want For Food Family Charitable Foundation and Bonham Walmart both just donated $3,000 and $1,000 respectively. Thank you to Glaser Family Charitable Foundation and Bonham Walmart. One of the issues that the FCCM faces is that meat is not always available and they do not have a choice as to type of meat they receive when they do receive it. According to the NTFB, Fannin County is one of their priority customers because of the need in this county. The facility operates with a checklist for eligibility to receive food that a person must meet as an individual. According to the Texas Food Bank Network, Texas is among the top eight (8) states in the United States with not enough
volunteer organization managed by an all-volunteer Board that oversees the operation. It is a nonprofit, 501c3 organization that operates solely on donations from churches and the private sector and occasional grants. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of all monies donated are used specifically to purchase food; the other two percent (2%) is used for utilities, office supplies and pest control. The food product comes from the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) in Dallas and is trucked to Bonham at an expense of .14 cents per pound, typically 1.5 truckloads a month. Freight for half of June and half of July was $2,616.46. That cost is completely paid for by donations. The Glaser
food per person and second in households that do not have enough food. In Fannin County, today, 18.1% of the residents do not have enough to eat because of the economy, 25.8% of that number are children. That is in a population of less than 34,000+- residents. In the first 8 months of 2019, FCCM averaged 1493 customers a month, of that it is an increase of 95 households so far this year. The total customers for the month of July was 1555 persons. The FCCM demographics show 1,998 households, 2,039 children ages 0-17, 2628 adults 18-59 years old, and 1,100 persons 60+ years old. Those are Fannin County residents of that 34,000+- population that do not have enough to eat on a daily basis. A large number of these residents work, however because of low pay fall within the parameters of that below the poverty line. The facility is located at

1022 FM 273 and was donated by a generous Bonham resident some time ago. Originally consisting of 5 acres, 4 have recently been sold, with that money being used to repair the building and buy two new large refrigerators. The FCCM operates 4 days a week, closed on Tuesday to receive food. It serves all residents of Fannin County regardless of race, color, creed, religion, political beliefs, age or disability. There are donation jars throughout the county and donations can be made on line or in person at the facility. It is unrealistic to think that there are so many food deprived people and not think that as a society we should sit by and watch residents in Fannin County go hungry because of the lack of food. The FCCM and its customers need your help, please donate. When one person dies of malnutrition we have failed our fellow man…..

Citizens of all ages enjoyed free hot dogs and snow cones as well as the opportunity to visit one-one with Bonham Police Officers, Bonham Firefighters and the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department. National Night Out is an annual community building campaign that enhances the relationship between citizens and law enforcement while increasing awareness of police and community based programs. The event has been held since 1984. Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases.

The BISD Board is moving ahead on a project to spend up to $300,000 to pave 1200 feet of Nolan Ashmore Way from Albert Broadfoot to the culvert/ bridge. The project also includes installing gates to shut down the thoroughfare during school hours. The Board’s decision is its solution to years of struggle with the issue of public traffic cutting through school property. Very few people are aware that Nolan Ashmore Way is not a city street except for the easternmost 100 feet or so at the south edge of Braums. Nolan Ashmore is a street, if you could call it that, that is paved at the south edge of the Finley-Oates school yard, then continues westward through the south edge of the stadium parking lot. The street becomes invisible in the parking lot. There are no curbs and no markings of any kind to indicate the presence of a thoroughfare. This street changes direction six times in the distance of two blocks. East-west drivers just have to figure out how to dodge oncoming traffic as best they can. The most dangerous part of this road is where it crosses the culvert/bridge. This bridge
access for students to walk from the school building to the stadium. The two-way traffic creates a serious hazard to anyone crossing the culvert, especially a student who might be texting instead of watching for cars. The same goes for pedestrian spectators going to the ball game. Last year a driver who was texting crashed into the side of the culvert. Fortunately he was not seriously injured. Had that been the case, a six digit lawsuit could have been the consequence of the incident. Such a lawsuit would name not only the school district, but also the city. That scenario is not a remote possibility. I am a retired safety professional and three months ago presented a brief to the city council detailing the hazards of continuing this habitual usage of school property. The following week I presented a detailed outline of the hazards and included suggestions to the school Board. The outline included cost estimates for permanently closing off access to Nolan Ashmore and absorbing what passes for a

The entire cost would be less than $10,000. This proposal drew vocal opposition from some drivers who did not want to change their driving habits. This casual disregard for the safety and security of the students in favor of personal self-interest is despicable. Any thinking person should realize the current system is dangerous. As for being inconvenienced, a driver going north on Albert Broadfoot would not be inconvenienced at all by going west on War Path to 121. A driver going east on Russell would continue to 121. It might take an extra three or four minutes to get to Silo Road, but that is a small price to pay for increased student safety. Drivers would not be seriously inconvenienced, and the students would be in less danger. The Board’s proposal to install gates might seem to be an acceptable answer but that solution has its problems. It will require someone to open and close them daily. Also it doesn’t make sense to have the unlit street open at night when a driver could lose control and

FM 898 Expansion is Underway in Fannin County
PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials announced this week that work to improve and widen FM 898 in Fannin County began on Sept. 26. The contractor, DL Lennon Inc., Commerce, Texas, was granted 533 working days to complete this project valued at more than $12.2 million. Weather permitting, this roadway improvement project should be completed in three years, officials said. This work on FM 898 will reach from the Fannin-Grayson County line eastward to the intersection of FM 898 and
State Highway 121 north of Bonham, Texas. The contractor will improved bridge rail and metal-beam guard fence, widen the roadway shoulders, install safety end treatments on existing bridges and culverts, and place a new pavement surface on this roadway, officials said. The work will require temporary lane closures at times, but access to adjacent properties will be maintained while this project is underway. Traffic will sometimes shift to one side of the existing roadway while contractor
crews perform work on the other side of the roadway, officials said. Motorists who travel regularly along this portion of FM 898 should remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems. For more information, contact Tim.McAlavy@txdot. gov or (903) 737-9213.

roll over in his vehicle. The District and the City have no current interlocal agreement regarding the general usage of school property. City police have no legal jurisdiction there regarding traffic violations. As of this writing there is only one warning sign regarding watching out for foot traffic and that is at the east end. The culvert is completely unprotected. It has no crossing warning sign. Since the presentation three months ago speed bumps have been added. A new 32 foot wide, concrete street will undoubtedly result in higher traffic speeds. The bottom line of this is that Nolan Ashmore Way is not a city street. The BISD should not spend up to $300,000 to pave a street that should and can be closed permanently for $10,000 or less. Jay Minton

Rep. Smith Named Legislative Champion by Mothers Against Drunk Driving
AUSTIN - State Representative Reggie Smith was named a 2019 Legislative Champion by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his work in passing legislation to curtail the offense of Driving While Intoxicated. Rep. Smith authored House Bill 2258, which required the installation of an ignition interlock device as a condition of bond for those charged with DWI with a child passenger. Rep. Smith worked to pass the language of HB 2258 as an amendment to another bill, which was signed into law by Governor Abbott and went into effect September 1. “I am honored to be named a legislative champion by MADD and appreciate their support of this important legislation,” said Rep. Smith. “The passage of this legislation means that Texas is committed to ensuring the safety of our roadways, especially when it comes to children.” In a press release, MADD spokesman Jaime Gutierrez applauded Rep. Smith for his “leadership and commitment to improving ignition interlock law in Texas. This legislation will help end the tragedies caused by drunk driving.” Nationally, MADD recognized 45 state lawmakers, three governors, and one lieutenant governor for their commitment to saving lives. State Representative Reggie Smith represents House District 62, which includes Grayson, Fannin and Delta counties.

HONEY GROVE -Upon promotion to the Honey Grove helm in 2018, veteran head football coach Glen Schuelke had high hopes. “We have a good shot for getting into the playoffs,” said Schuelke in late March 2018, “and hope to try and win the district title. “We’ve gotten in the playoffs [previously],” he said. “Now we will try to win and get on a roll in them.” Last fall, the Warriors reached the bi-district round for the second-straight year, completing a 7-4 campaign during Schuelke’s first season. Honey Grove advanced to the playoffs as the District 6-2A (I) runner-up at 3-1. A 5-0 start midway through this season during non-district play makes achieving those other hopes later this fall -- Honey Grove’s first district championship and extended postseason run in football since the 10-1-1 regional round effort in 1A Division I in 2012 -- seem plausible. “We are focusing on one game at a time,” said senior running back Trel Pruitt on Sept. 30, “and will keep playing strong and hard.” “It is a confidence builder,” said senior quarterback Hayden Stroud. “It’s cool to see hard work pay off and execution on the field show on the scoreboard.” Of the five wins, only the
first one -- outlasting Class 3A-II Bells, 38-30, on the road in the regular season opener on Aug. 30 -- had a single-digit winning margin. “That was a big win for us,” said Schuelke, noting Honey Grove had to overcome a fumble return for a touchdown during the game. “The win at Bells was a good win.” What followed in successive weeks has not been nearly as close: a 48-20 win at home against 3AII Whitewright on Sept. 6; victories on the road against 3A-II Alba-Golden, 36-0, on Sept. 13 and 2A-II Maud, 52-22, on Sept. 20; and a 76-6 win on homecoming over 2A-II Clarksville on Sept. 27. Leading the offensive outbursts for the Warriors have been three seniors -- Jake Caffee, Pruitt and Stroud -- three of 14 total twelfth graders on Honey Grove’s 24-man varsity roster. “Trel and Jake can run and Hayden Stroud is probably the most improved player,” said Schuelke. “It helps when your quarterback [Stroud] can also run with the football. “When I got here [in 2017], [they] were sophomores,” he said. “They have grown and improved a bunch. It’s amazing what time in the weight room in the offseason and natural growth have done for them. “We’ve got some kids [here] that can play!”
