Nov. 7, 2023 AUSTIN – It almost happened. The long and heartbreaking 23-year streak of daily deaths on Texas highways almost ended. Almost.

On one day in February, Texas experienced a single traffic fatality – well below the average of 12 roadway deaths that occur daily on roadways statewide.

are impacted for a lifetime, and we take safety very seriously as we work to end this horrible streak,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “But it’s going to take all of us working together to get this done.” TxDOT has committed to enhancing safety on Texas roads, investing $17 billion in safety improvements through the state’s 10-year plan. TxDOT has also developed new changes that may seem small, but could have a major impact: ● Increasing the size of pavement striping from 4 inches to 6 inches. This enhances the visibility of striping on the roadways and encourages drivers to slow down. ● Providing a wider centerline buffer between double yellow stripes with rumble strips or raised pavement markers on undivided highways to alert drivers when they cross the centerline. ● Building innovative intersections like roundabouts, where appropriate, can decrease fatalities at intersections by 90%. ● Implementing a “Safer by Design” program to give roadway designers a way to model safety performance from most of the key design elements used in projects. Engineering, education and enforcement will always be the key components of traffic safety programs. While TxDOT builds engineering improvements, drivers can help keep themselves safe on the road. For example, 48% of deaths on Texas roads are from people not wearing their seatbelt inside a vehicle. That one click can have a major impact on fatalities. We all have a shared responsibility to keep our roads and fellow drivers safe. TxDOT is asking all Texans to do any or all the following to raise awareness: Make the best and safest decisions behind the wheel, don’t drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs; always obey traffic laws; always wear your seatbelt. Post pictures on social media with this downloadable sign displaying the hashtag #EndTheStreakTX. Share personal stories on social media of loved ones who have been lost in a crash and use the hashtag #EndTheStreakTX. Follow @txdot social media pages and share the content we post. Together, we can save lives and end this streak of daily deaths.

These signs displayed where work is in progress or finished.. Road Work updates for Week ending 11/03/2023 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the Road to Recovery." As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. CR 1410 was graded - finally. It still has a few rough spots but it is much better than it was. The grader blades that should really help it have been ordered. A hole dug in the middle of CR 2520 by the water company and patched is still wet due to all the clay in the underlying soil. We may have to go in next week and dig all the clay out and replace it with rock. For the week ending November 3, 2023 the team was able to grade the following county roads: 1015, 1025, 1030, 1100, 1105, 1115, 1145, 1565, 4120, 4125, and 4130. Tree trimming on CR 1140 was finished. We are almost through with our part of cleaning up CR 2015 due to it being completely washed out in the last rain storm. We are removing all the brush on both sides of the road as far back as possible and then a contractor will come in rebuild the road using 2 - 48 inch culverts and approximately 40 loads of rock to build the road up 4-5 feet from its present elevation. Drainage ditches will also be put in so this does not happen again. A few of the team members also spent time cleaning off bridges, culverts, and around road signs so they can be found again. It is always nice to know where a bridge is and just how wide it is when you come up to it. A culvert on CR 1125 will be lengthened next week as it has gotten narrower and narrower over the years and has had people run off on the South side every so often. Our team was one of those people last week and we finished the collapse of the short end. We are going to try and add 5-10 feet to one end. We did not get here in a day, week, or even year and it will take a dedicated team of employee's like we have currently time to correct the issues. Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One 903-965-7030

NOTE: All Commissioners are encouraged to submit updates from their Precinct. Publication is free as a service to County residents and their Commissioner.

This Fall Harvest Salad complements any meal with its sweet and smoky flavors. There are such wonderful colors and produce this time of year, so I love having a goto fall harvest chicken salad recipe up my sleeve for any event. This recipe is perfect for a fancy luncheon, a hearty dinner or to serve as a healthy option during the holidays. FALL HARVEST CHICKEN SALAD 2 c. chicken breasts boneless and skinless (marinated in half apple cider vinaigrette for 60 minutes up to overnight) 1 medium butternut squash about 6 cups, peeled, seeded and cut into ½ inch cubes 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil salt and freshly ground pepper 1 c. quinoa uncooked regular, red or other varieties 2 c. vegetable stock, chicken broth and/or water 1 tsp. salt 4 c. salad greens try Arugula, Baby Spring Mix or Chopped Kale ¼ c. dried cranberries ⅓ c. pecans roasted, chopped ⅓ c. goat cheese crumbled; or feta cheese 2 Honeycrisp or similar apples washed and sliced into chunks or thin slices or pears 6-8 Tbsp. pumpkin seeds toasted Apple Cider Dressing & Marinade (double if marinading) ¼ c. apple cider vinegar ¼ c. extra virgin olive oil ¼ c. orange juice

10/24/23 .COM

(fresh squeezed) 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 2 Tbsp. maple syrup 1 tsp. salt Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, toss cubed butternut squash with a single layer on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake 20-25 minutes until golden. Allow to cool. Rinse quinoa and drain, combine quinoa, salt, water and/or broth in a small saucepan, bring to a boil uncovered, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20-30 minutes until liquid is absorbed and quinoa is light and fluffy. Set aside to cool. Make Apple Cider Vinaigrette and Marinade. Mix all dressing ingredients in a glass jar with lid and shake well until combined, or place in blender for a minute until emulsified. Refrigerate until ready to use. Place chicken breasts in plastic baggie or glass dish and pour half the marinade/dressing, return to fridge to marinate for at least 60 minutes. Use a grill pan or outdoor grill, grilling marinated chicken (discard marinade) for 6 minutes on medium heat per side. Allow to rest for 10 minutes. Place approximately 1 c. of greens on a plate or bowl, then arrange quinoa, apples, cranberries, pecans, cheese and pumpkin seeds, thinly slice chicken and lay on top, then drizzle with dressing and serve, or serve in a large salad bowl. I also love adding pomegranate arils or dried cherries as well to this salad. Also replace the feta cheese for creamy goat cheese instead. This is a good salad! ENJOY!!!! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclweesie@gmail. com

Ector's Dominique Green. Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Lydia Essary's advance last year ended an eightyear absence from the State cross country championships for Class 1A Ector. "We took an aggressive approach with her this year," said Ector cross country coach Blake Turner. "I talked to other coaches who had similar situations. "She also ran a lot on her own including 5Ks," he said. "I told her that expectations had been raised. I told her we train now for more than individual meet finishes." Essary on Nov. 3 returned to the 1A State girls' race in Round Rock -- and the sophomore improved her finish and time. "I got a better start [at State]... and pushed myself even thought I was tired," said Essary on Nov. 6, after placing 22nd out of 146 runners in the 3200m girls' race in 13:06.3. "I had a better mindset this year [during the season]," she said. "When I ran, I kept a positive attitude." Last year, Essary finished 30th at State in 13:32.2.

In addition to Essary's continued success, sophomore Dominique Green this fall equated the first boy from Ector to reach State in the sport since Graham Shannon's 2014 trip. "I started the year and thought I'd try my best. See where I landed," said Green who finished 114th out of 146 runners in 20:30 on Nov. 3 in the 1A State boys' 5K race. "Something clicked for him [during this season]," said Turner. "He started running faster and put in lots of work. "At the regional meet, we knew he had an outside chance [to make State]" said the coach. "He was the last individual to qualify. He passed someone to get it. "He's already asking about running programs and is fired up for next year. For him to have this level of success is super exciting."

Media Release - The Purple Heart Bench honoring the courageous men and women of Fannin County, who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the U.S. Military, has been placed next to the American flagpole at the newly restored 1888 Courthouse. The Commissioners Court wishes to thank all our military veterans.

Going the

Extra Mile When 91-year-old Betty Burk fell and broke her hip, femur and collarbone, she knew her recovery after surgery would be a difficult one. Fortunately, the Swing Bed Program at TMC Bonham Hospital helped her make the most of her rehabilitation. Swing Bed, also referred to as skilled care, offers around-theclock care for patients transitioning between a hospital stay and discharge to home, allowing them extra time to rebuild their strength after an acute illness or injury. Burk spent 30 days in the program and then continued her rehab journey in the outpatient therapy program at TMC Bonham Hospital. She credits her care providers for her progress. “I’m just thankful to be able to do what I can now,” she says. “It’s good that I can go shopping tomorrow!”

Our children are God’s arrows in our quiver. They are also a target for the enemy, Satan, who has gained too much ground in today’s culture. Our kids face a very real spiritual battle for their hearts and their minds! Realizing this, American Heritage Girls (AHG) of Bonham was started in September, 2023 as an extension of Calvary Baptist Church’s ministry. Like Trail Life does for boys, American Heritage Girls helps the church to stand in the gap for our girls, to extend God’s love and God’s truth to them in a guiding and nurturing way. Our goal as American Heritage Girls is to love the Lord and to serve our community. For example, we recently attended our local Fannin Coun-

ty Commissioners meeting, where the girls presented 25 red roses, which they put together with Psalm 1 attached to each rose, as an encouragement to our Judge, Commissioners, and all the staff for their work and protection for the children and all people

they serve of Fannin County. We started November’s meeting with a Friendsgiving Banquet, where our guest speaker reminded the girls that a true friend will always encourage us in God, and that our Best and Ultimate Friend is Jesus Christ, who will never leave us or forsake us! We will be having our first fundraiser on Saturday, December 9th at the New Zion Baptist Church Christmas Market, where we will be serving hot chocolate with all the trimmings for anyone who would like to join us! Our Troop is named after Matthew 28:19: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit …”

Tuesday, November 7, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 8:37 a.m., a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with County Judge and all County Commissioners present except for Commissioner Self who was running late. 2. Hear comments regarding proposed Recreational Vehicle Park Regulations for Fannin County, Texas – County Judge: Comments included an inquiry as to why Commissioner Self was not present, a discussion regarding applicable fees that can be assessed with an RV park and a called in comment regarding RV bathrooms. 3. Hear comments regarding the proposed Regulations for Sexually Oriented Businesses for the Unincorporated Areas of Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham began by noting that according to the state and the federal government, the county could not prohibit SOBs, but could only regulate them. A citizen of Ravenna would be the first of six speakers with a suggestion of increasing the distance an SOB could be located next to a personal residence (suggesting “another state,” when asked what would be an acceptable distance). The next citizen of Ravenna spoke at length and questioned whether Fannin County is even required to accept an SOB within its borders. Passages from the Constitution sparked a lively discussion regarding state rights and the Federal Government’s rights to regulate commerce. After

the citizen cited a conversation had with Representative Reggie Smith’s office that supported her belief SOBs could legally be kept out of Fannin County, Judge Cunningham noted his willingness to speak with Representative Smith’s office regarding the matter. Comments from the next four speakers would run the gamut of offering thanks to Judge Cunningham for his efforts and concern for the citizens of Fannin County, to comments regarding interpretations of biblical references in relation to the matter. 4. Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 9:23 a.m. On the same day at 9:24 a.m., Judge Cunningham called to order the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court and noted Quorum established with himself and all County Commissioners present. The Invocation was led by Judge Cunningham with the Pledges led by Commissioner Magness. There were no Introductions. 5. Public Forum: Citizen Jannie Bellows spoke to remind all that it was election day and encourage the citizenry to have their voices heard by voting before thanking Judge Cunningham for his service. ROUTINE ITEMS: 6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the amount needing to be paid was $148,470.98. A motion to approve payment was then made by Commissioner Self, seconded by Commissioner Kopf and passed. 7. Letter to the Editor

Pleasing words are easy to give and too easily believed. If you want to truly know what a person is worth watch what they do then see how it compares to the words. Shortly after Dale McQueen

took over Precinct 1, the road crew was in my area clearing trees and patching the ignored roads. What most impressed me was Commissioner McQueen was not back at the office sitting in the AC; nor was he sitting in the cold cab of his truck. He was out in the 100 degree heat picking up limbs while supervising the crew. I took a moment to thank him for being there as my road was almost impassable.

I could not help but notice how hot, sweaty and tired he looked. Rarely have I been so impressed with a “boss.” It is no secret PCT 1 roads are in serious disrepair. The enormity of the task to get them back in shape will take time. However, I have no doubt about this. We are on the right track now and we owe Dale McQueen our gratitude, support and acknowledgment for the hard work he is doing for this Precinct. Leo Murphy

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Crappie are good in the creeks and near shores. Catfish are great on cut shad around the banks and in timber. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 62 degrees; 3.39 feet below pool. Fishing patterns are holding steady but there is gusty wind in the forecast. White bass are biting chartreuse 1 ounce lead slabs with a crappie jig 1/16 ounce tied on a looped knot 2 feet above your slab, or paddle tail swimbait. Look for white bass shallow first in 3-5 feet along the banks wherever birds are. then move out to main lake points 10-20 feet and use slabs. You can find these tasty little bluegill in almost every single brush pile on the entire lake. Especially if it is in an average depth of 15-25 feet with earthworms on a small hook 2-4 pound line. Catfish can be caught in 10-20 of water drifting cut shad, sunfish, or drum. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 65 degrees; 0.47 feet below pool. The fall feed is showing up in full force this week. With the recent rain, the lake has come up a foot and we are currently 3 inches low. Stripers, hybrid stripers and white bass are solid feeding on schools of shad throughout the entire lake. We are finding fish in 3-50 feet with slabs or swimbaits working best. The trophy catfish bite has kicked off and we are seeing several fish up to 50 pounds being caught on fresh shad in the mid depths of 15-25 feet. The eating sized catfish bite is again wide open on baited holes from 18-30 feet with prepared baits. Crappie are more active now than they have been in months. Both brush and bridge pilings are holding fish. Minnows and jigs are working equally well. The largemouth bite has been good this week with numbers of fish coming out of shallow water near dock posts, shallow retaining rock and riprap. Shaky heads, squarebill crankbaits and even daylight topwaters have been good. Texoma GOOD. Water normal stained; 65 degrees; 2.68 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good using live shad in 40-60 feet of water fishing suspended around 30 feet down. Gulls are still around but less surface feeding with the warm temps. Topwaters are slow on main lake points and the backs of coves at daylight. Catfishing is good on chunked up gizzard shad drifting in 50-60 feet of water fishing along the bottom. Smaller fish are stacked on the ledges in 30-40 feet of water. Crappie are fair on boat docks and brush piles in 8-12 feet of water using jigs and live minnows. Largemouth or smallmouth bass fishing is good along the bluffs fishing live shad. Fish are shallow on the banks, still catching smaller fish on swim baits in the backs of the rocky coves. The Truth About The Thief On The Cross

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Luke records the event of Jesus dying on the cross (Luke 23:39-43). There was a conversation with the two thieves who were being crucified with Him. One ridiculed Him. The other defended Jesus and recognized that Jesus was innocent. Jesus promised this one would be in Paradise that day. Many today want to say that the thief on the cross wasn’t baptized, so baptism is not important in salvation. Consider these FOUR TRUTHS about the thief on the cross. The TRUTH is that no one knows if the thief was baptized or not. Multitudes had been baptized by John the baptizer and by Jesus' disciples (Matthew 3:5-6; John 4:1-2). It is entirely possible that the thief was baptized and then later fell into sin. It cannot be argued as a case of salvation without baptism unless we know the person was not baptized. TRULY, the thief is NOT an example of salvation by faith only. He did not have the faith

that is required today. Paul informs us of the faith that is needed, “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Today we must believe that God HAS RAISED Jesus from the dead. The thief on the cross could not possibly believe that; because Jesus had not died, been buried, or raised. Scriptures clearly teach the TRUTH, that baptism is essential to receiving forgiveness under the Gospel, that is, after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Jesus, himself, said (after his death, burial, and resurrection), “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). Peter said (after Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection), “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). Paul, (after Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection), quotes Annanias, “arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins” (Acts

22:16). Christians in Galatia were reminded, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Galatians 3:26-27). Peter stated “baptism doth also now save us” (1 Peter 3:21). The TRUTH is that the thief was saved while the Old Testament was still in effect and was not an example of salvation under the Gospel. Paul wrote that Jesus “Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross” (Colossians 2:14). Jesus removed the first ordinances “nailing them to His cross.” Until Jesus died, the Jews lived under the laws given at Mt. Sinai through Moses. When He died, those laws ceased to be in effect. The thief lived under the law of Moses, not under the law of Christ. TRULY, the thief on the cross is NOT an example of salvation for us to follow today any more than Moses, David, or Elijah would be. The Word of God MUST be followed.

Sunday Morning Re-take Hello everyone!

“Count Your Blessings”

With Thanksgiving coming up, this week I will be focusing on 1 Thessalonians 5:18. Here, the apostle Paul is writing to the church in Corinth, reminding them, as we should be reminded, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Oftentimes we forget to stop and give thanks for something that someone has done for us. Unfortunately, we also sometimes forget to tell our Lord, Jesus Christ, thank you for what He has done for us. This is a very dangerous thing. I am reminded of a song that we sang in our church several years ago, which reminds us of the gratitude that we should give to our Lord and Savior. It says, “Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One; give thanks, for He has given Jesus Christ, His Son.” What a powerful message! This is the attitude that we, as Christians, really should have. Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr. (1856-1922) wrote this classic hymn in 1897. I love the

message in this song. “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done. Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done;

Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.” If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? OBITUARIES

It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. Part of me went with you, the day God took you home.

JAMES MARSHALL WARE

James Marshall Ware of Bonham, Texas passed away on November 3, 2023, at the age of 72. James (Jim) was born on September 11, 1951, in Dallas, Texas to Marshall Denton Ware and Mary Violet (McLauchlan) Ware. James grew up in the Kessler Parkway area of the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas and was the oldest of four brothers: Douglas, John (Jack), and Marty, who was born with spina bifida and sadly passed at age seven. As a child, Jim enjoyed building tree houses and fishing in Coombs Creek and played 1st string violin while attending Rosemont Elementary School. During his teenage years, he was an Eagle Scout, “tapped” in the Boy Scout Order of the Arrow, was elected as a Boy Scout Senior Patrol Leader, and was an accomplished competitive swimmer at Sunset High School. Jim was awarded his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from University of Texas at Arlington. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, Construction Specifications Institute, Construction Documents Technology, and was a certified specialist in LEED AP (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). He worked for several architecture firms in Dallas and Washington D.C., designed the family house on Old City Lake in Bonham, and designed Back to Nature, his mother’s health food store in Dallas. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed wine-making, pottery, and stained glass design. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Marshall Ware, and by his little brother, Marty. He is survived by his brothers, Douglas and John Ware, and his nieces, Linda Ellmore and Julia Dill.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. PSALMS 23
