fender leaves. Center staff and volunteers take the time to find out about the individual situation, needs, preferences and wishes of each child. The agency also works closely with Child Protective Services and other community agencies to ensure that efforts are coordinated and not duplicated. Donations of cash, toys, new clothes, coats, shoes and other items are now being accepted. Teddy bear trees, which contain the wish or need of a specific child, are up or will soon be up at the Tax-Assessor Collector’s Office, CapTex Bank, WalMart, Legend Bank, Blessings and Butterflies, Tractor Supply and Warrior Tire. For donors who are short on time, the center also accepts cash donations which will be used to purchase gifts for the children. Donations can be brought or mailed to the center at 112 West Fifth Street, Bonham, Texas 75418. The center is open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday – Friday, but for the week of Dec 2-6 they will stay open until 6 pm so that donors can drop off gifts after work. Organizers ask that the donations arrive by Dec 6, or earlier if possible. This will allow time for gifts to be sorted and delivered in time for the holidays. Checks should be made out to FCCC and indicate they are for Christmas. Donations can also be made by credit or debit card on the center’s website. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. For more information, call 903-583-4339 or visit www.fanninccc.org.

Fannin County Courthouse Restoration November 21, 2019

Here is my updated position regarding the project: It should continue, which will include additional taxpayer money be spent. And those of you who know me personally know how hard those words are for me to say. Of all the reasonable, apparent options at this point in

time, it is better to proceed, with the Commissioners and County Judge very likely having to commit to more debt. Stopping work, which is not as simple as it sounds, or putting the decision on the next ballot (which is a year away), appears worse -- much worse. Yesterday I met in lengthy discussions with the County auditor Alicia Whipple, and later with County Judge Randy Moore. After reviewing the financials both past and present,

work done to date, work needing to be done, work currently under contract, and exploring numerous options, it became apparent that we taxpayers’ best option is to CONTINUE AS WE ARE. This includes the Commissioners and Judge maintaining flexibility to secure additional, necessary funds in a timely manner. As far as competency to continue overseeing the project, they are the best we have -- they are what we have, and they are in place to do it. It is natural (and tempting) to look back and ask why and how we got ourselves to this place -- the place to where we need money in addition to that which was approved by us voters; and to blame who and what we might think caused it. That looking back and blaming is fruitless. It buys us nothing now. We are where we are. Forward is the direction we must focus on. So what do we do going forward? The best option is to proceed, supporting our Commissioners and Judge working the project. Let them continue doing what we put them in of-

From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17 Life’s Most Important Decisions

By Bro. Bill Beasley Joshua 24:15 Matthew 6:22 All of the decisions of life have their moment of importance. Some are more

important than others, however placing my faith in the personal God has been the most precious and meaningful. Equally as close I think is to accept the thought that God has a plan for everyone. He has a plan tailor made for you and for me. This does not mean He has the same plan for everyone – but that all of us have work to do and are important. I have enjoyed a very wonderful life in the Lord. I began this way. Having graduated from a high school in Mississippi in 1941 I moved to Texas to work for the summer. My plans were to work and re-

turn to college in the fall. Plans were disrupted by surgery on August 11, 1941. I had to delay and continue working. Again, plans were disrupted because of illness. It was then that I was counseled by some friends with the question, “Bill are you sure that you are on the same page with God? Does God want you to do His work?” My answer was no. So in that sick room I came to the conviction that my work was to be in a church related ministry. On November 30, 1941 I made a commitment to the First Baptist Church, Port Neches, Texas. Then on

Local Food Pantry NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Press Release - Think for a moment about last night: You got hungry so you opened your refrigerator and pondered what part of the abundance in view you’d make for supper. But what if you didn’t have a choice? What if the only thing in your refrigerator was a half gallon of expired milk and a partial can of beans? Or even worse - what if all you saw were empty shelves? Many of us have a hard time imagining what it must be like to go hungry. But the truth is there are many in our community who experience that terrible reality every day. Hunger isn’t limited to any one group. It affects children, young adults, single parents, those living alone, the elderly - all demographics. With the approaching colder weather, the Wolfe City Food Pantry is more focused than ever on providing healthy food to those in need. But we need your help! Times are tough, our incoming donations are down and our once-full warehouse is showing lots of empty space. Won’t you help us to help them? Monetary donations are always the most efficient and easiest way to help. Through our partnership with the North Texas Food Bank we have access to food at very little cost. Using your donation we can obtain vital healthy nutrition for as little as $0.14 per pound! You can even go one further - how about getting your employer involved and have them match your donation? It’s not only a great community effort but you’ve also just DOUBLED your own call to action! You can mail a tax-deductible donation to: Wolfe City Food Pantry P.O. are also helpful and very much appreciated. With the holiday of thankfulness right around the corner many people are not only counting their blessings, but feeling the tug to share those blessings with their neighbors in need. How about hosting a non-perishable food drive at your church, school or

place of employment? If you would like to hold a food drive, please contact Sandra Woodruff at 903-413-1820. Any donation at all, large or small, is a gift of love. You won’t know the people you’ve helped, but you’ll know that you’ve HELPED MANY!

If you are looking for a new way to use that leftover turkey, and you like Mexican food, you may want to try this recipe. I haven’t made this recipe, but I plan on doing so after Thanksgiving, and when I do, I think I may add shredded Mexican blend cheese on the top. It’s interesting that the recipe doesn’t call for cheese. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. It’s a good time to count our blessings, and prepare our hearts for the Christmas season. I don’t know about you, but I’m thankful our Good Lord put me right here in Fannin County, and put me in an era of prosperity for all. I remember my mother telling about the hardships she and her family had growing up during the Great Depression, but they did have food because they lived in the country and was able to produce their food. Many living in the cities went hungry. Then she and my dad experienced WWII, and the sacrifices every American citizen had to make, and I know I am truly blessed.

The 4th annual Holiday Wine Stroll & Taste of Bonham is scheduled for December 7th and promises to be the best yet. Join the stroll for an evening of shopping, wine sipping & tantalizing bites. This year’s stroll features 17 stops and welcomes

13 local wineries and 15 local eateries to tempt your taste buds and love of wine as you discover the treasures that our businesses on the square have to offer. The stroll is designed to bring attention to local businesses around the square and to try the fares of local restaurants, eateries & caterers. Each participant will receive a wine glass, shopping bag and map upon check-in at the Creative Art Center. Christmas music will serenade strollers who are encouraged to stop at every location, this year designated by

a window painting of a penguin, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce Elves. Maps that have been initialed at every stop will be entered into a drawing at the end of the stroll for prizes donated by local businesses and wineries. The ticket price is $35 and a “Designated Driver” ticket may be purchased for $20. Tickets may be purchased online at https://squareup.com/ store/bonham-area-chamberof-commerce. If planning to attend, you are encouraged to purchase your tickets on-line prior to the event, as there will be limited availability the night of the stroll. For more information, contact the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce website, https:// www.fannincountytexas.com/ and click on the Annual Wine Stroll Tickets & Information link.

Sheriff Johnson proposes 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County Resolution in Commissioners Court

By Christina Brown

1. Establish Quorum. The regular Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order by Fannin County Judge Randy Moore on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. A quorum was established as all commissioners were present at this time. 2. Invocation. The invocation was given by Trevor Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Ector. 3. Pledges. Pledges to the U.S. and Texas Flags were led by Major James Manis. 4. Introductions. There were no introductions this week. 5. Public Forum. Sheriff Johnson spoke on the subject of the 2nd Amendment concerning the right to bear arms which allows citizens to protect their property and family. He stated that several states and counties have already declared their municipal jurisdictions as a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary State or County. Sheriff Johnson read the resolution and proposed that the commissioners pass a resolution declaring Fannin County a sanctuary city for the 2nd Amendment. In the resolution it states that the sheriff will stand behind the county and not allow or participate with the Federal government if they were to come in and try to take our guns. He supports the Constitutional Amendment and does not support any form of government that would try to take our rights away. Sheriff Johnson stated he would have the resolution completed by next week and would present it to the commissioners for review. Sandy Hood with the Fannin County Family Crisis Center encouraged the public, businesses and churches to help supply food and toys for the children and families that they serve during the holiday season. Without our support they may not be able to provide Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners and gifts for the children. The center is also taking donations of electric heaters and new or gently used coats for the winter. For a list of needed items, please contact the Fannin County Crisis Center at 903-583-7694. Newt Cunningham spoke concerning property taxes and the renovation of the courthouse. He

5 Tips for a Merry Holiday Home

(StatePoint) A merry holiday season starts at home. Here are some nice ways to add cheer to the rooms and spaces where people gather. • Light a Fire: It may be the most primitive technology in existence but lighting a fire is still one of the best ways to create a rich holiday atmosphere. Bonus: use aromatic firewood such as pine, fir or cedar. • Project a Movie: Decorating for the holiday season can be as easy as setting up a projector and playing seasonal movies on a loop. From classics like “Miracle on 34th Street” to contemporary favorites like “Elf,” these films provide the perfect backdrop to the holiday season. With the ability to run all day, the LampFree Projectors in Casio’s Slim Series are ideal for this purpose. • Bake Cookies: Make the whole house smell amazing (and become everyone’s favorite person) by popping cookies and other desserts in the oven that include spices evocative of the season, like nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla. For a lighter option, you can get the same effect by brewing tea with these same ingredients. • Host a Sing-a-Long: Securing yourself a digital piano with an authentic concert grand sound may just be the best gift you give your family this holiday season. The Casio GP-500 reproduces the three-dimensional sound field generated by an acoustic grand to fill a room with rich, complex sound, making it a great place to gather for holiday sing-alongs. The piano itself can also be a decoration destination -- think garlands and candles. Be sure to set out sheet music and other instruments like tambourines or bells so that guests can join in the fun. • Add Flora: Spruce up your

living spaces – literally. Holly, Christmas cactus, poinsettias and spruce add color and vibrancy to mantels, staircases, coffee tables and other nooks and crannies. What’s more, many of these plants will continue to thrive long after the lights and tinsel come down.

Open Arms Homeless Shelter

By Tina Moore

Open Arms Homeless Shelter is on schedule to open in January of 2020. The remodel of the building at 1205 Albert Broadfoot is almost complete. The kitchen is ready

for installation of cabinets and fixtures. The bathrooms need flooring and additional plumbing work. Painting of the back rooms is in progress. Soon it will be time to start furnishing the building. It is so exciting to see the work being

completed. When completed, the building will be able to house up to twenty-one individuals. The shelter will be open overnight from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day. A paid staff member will be on duty during those hours. Early evening volunteers will help with the evening meal and getting people settled for the night. Late night/early morning volunteers will be there to provide security and support. Morning volunteers will help

with breakfast and preparing sack lunches. Volunteers are also needed to assist with office work, publicity, and fund raising. Training and job descriptions will be provided for all volunteers. Volunteers will be required to have a background check. If you want to make a difference in Fannin County and are willing to become a part of our volunteers, please sign up on the website: www.oashelter.com.

The Right Person: New collegiate softball program sees Bonhi pitcher in action, invites to join

Bonham senior Mackenzie Person (seated, center) finishes signing on Nov. 22 to play softball for the University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain in Mena. On hand to see it were (L to R) dad Doug Person, UARM assistant athletic director Jerod McCormick and mom Robin Person. Photo by Rich Hilliard That next level equates pitching and playing shortstop for the University of ArkansasRich Mountain after graduation. Person announced her decision at a ceremony held in the Bonham High School main gymnasium on Nov. 22 with teammates, coaches, family and friends in attendance. “[UARM] watched my videos ... and gave me an offer,” said Person, who will be part of the Division-II school’s first softball team in 2021. “They said I showed leadership qualities. Since they are a new team, they thought I’d be a good fit” “You hear the cliche: ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work.’ She’s that kid who has worked hard to get in this position that is next [for her],” said Englutt, calling her the Greg Maddox of Bonham’s pitching staff. “She has done it. Kudos to her. She has worked to get this offer.”

Knowing where she will pitch after high school, Person, also an all-district honorable mention on the field in 2019, will now focus on her final season with the Lady Warriors who will vie in 2020 for a 12th-consecutive postseason. Bonham exited last spring in the area round via eventual Class 3A state champion Emory Rains. “I want to go as far as possible,” said Person. “I want to have fun and make the most of this moment.” Last season, Person combined with her younger sister, Cameron, now a sophomore, to give opponents an abrupt change when one left -- and the other entered -- the pitching circle. “Cameron is more speed,” said Mackenzie Person. “I’m more movement.” That dissimilarity made the difference in the decisive game of the Lady Warriors’ bi-district series. Person’s 6 2/3 innings of

seniors off the team -- including first-team all-state quarterback Tyler Rodriguez, a Hendrix College football and track signee, who spearheaded the prolific offense on the ground and through the air with his legs and arm. What followed proved to be a rebuilding year in 2019 for the Purple Warriors -- a 1-9 regular season, and being outscored, 481-182. Bonham’s only win came on Sept. 13 during non-district play via a 52-42 home victory against 3A-II Leonard. Unbeknownst at the time, the victory saved Fish from being the fifth-consecutive Purple Warriors’ head football coach to endure a winless season during his stay. Fish came to Bonham from 5A Frisco Lone Star, being hired in March 2018. He replaced Tony Johnson who only coached the Purple Warriors for three seasons, had a 5-26 record, a bi-district appearance in 2016 and lost a coin flip the following year for another advance after again tying with two other teams for the fourth and final district berth. By Rich Hilliard BONHAM -- Earning academic all-district notoriety yearly shows a few things about Bonham senior Mackenzie Person. She’s able to succeed simultaneously during the season on and off the field. She’s also able to use skills useful in one place in another. Take an observation she has made about her pitching -- and how to be the most successful. “I never had much speed,” said Person. “I focused [instead] on spin. I thought maybe movement was more of a way to go.” “She does a good job using spin [of the ball] to get outs when she is pitching,” said Bonham softball manager Micky Englutt. “That’s her weapon. It’s what got her to the next level. She will be very effective.”

Bonham’s Mackenzie Person pitches last February during the Lady Warriors’ annual tournament. Photo by Rich Hilliard scoreless relief left Pilot Point unable to adjust -- and helped

Bonham advance. She entered the game with the Lady War-

riors trailing, 2-0, in the first inning -- with Pilot Point having just reloaded the bases. “I wanted to do the best I could by coming in and helping my sister and getting outs,” said Mackenzie Person. “That was all I was focused on.” Person needed only three pitches to get consecutive force outs at home on grounders back to the pitcher to end the threat. Bonham eventually won, 4-2, to advance. Expect more of that in 2020 from the older Person who enters the season with a 4-2 record, five saves, 32 strikeouts and only 13 walks during 58 innings for the Lady Warriors. “She will have a similar role this year, with a few more starts,” said Englutt. “It will again be an offset situation: out of speed, go to movement. Maybe flip flop. “She will also have to step up and play other positions,” he said. She’s a kid I’ll look to to fill roles left by graduation. She will be a full-time player in games going forward.”

March-ing Four-ward: Lady Hornets coach says no State talk as three-peat hoops finalist starts year

Fish resigns as 3A-I Bonham’s HFC

Senior Cassidy Herron (5) drives just inside the 3-point arc and heads toward the basket on Nov. 19 during Dodd City’s 2019-20 season opener. Herron led the Lady Hornets with 18 points. Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard DODD CITY -- Despite three-straight trips to the Class 1A girls basketball state championship game, Dodd City’s Lady Hornets will not have a San Antonio-or-bust mindset during the 2019-20 season. “We don’t look at it like that,” said seventh-year Dodd City head girls basketball coach Alex Stephenson on Nov. 19, after the Lady Hornets’ 79-30 season-opening win over 3A Bells.

“We want to get better each day,” said Stephenson. “We don’t talk about State.” As they take that measured approach, the Lady Hornets welcome back a roster full of players familiar with the state championship limelight -- and who have the individual awards received in 2019 from the most recent trip to show for it. Senior Delaney Pilliod and junior Journie Hilliard return, after placing on the 2019 UIL 1A basketball state all-tournament team, as selected by the Texas

Girls Coaches Association. Hilliard had 14 rebounds and five points, Pilliod had 12 points via four 3-pointers and each made two steals in the championship game, but six-time defending-champion Nazareth defeated Dodd City, 54-33. Hilliard also scored a game-high 22 points with 11 rebounds and Pilliod garnered six points, six rebounds and four assists during a 52-33 defeat of Moulton in the state semifinals. Additionally, senior Cassidy Herron and Pilliod and junior Dani Baccus and Hilliard garnered spots on the 2019 TGCA 1A all-state basketball team. Baccus and Hilliard also made the 1A girls all-state team of the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in 2019 and joined Pilliod and Herron on the TABC Region III-1A girls squad. Dodd City also returns others who played in the most recent championship game: sophomores Kylee Graves, Ali Preas and Tori Dotson and junior Braylee Cowan. Meanwhile, freshman Rion Baccus made her Lady Hornets’ varsity debut on Nov. 19 with 15 points. “I like this team,” said Stephenson. “We have a lot of returning players who have played on the big stage multiple times. “I like where we are,” he said. “In a program like this, players step up: Next man up.”
