It’s estimated that 10 million Baby Boomers suffer from moderate to severe hearing loss. It doesn’t just affect the ability to hear, but also the ease of communication & ability to understand words. The Good News Perhaps more than prior generations, Boomers have higher expectations for their health & are more likely to seek diagnosis & treatment. Digital hearing instruments are now so technologically advanced, they can be precisely programmed to your hearing preferences & your lifestyle.

Facing Life’s Different Moments
By Bro. Bill Beasley Psalms 90 Psalms 90 is a prayer of Moses. Moses will be remembered as one of God’s great servants in the Old Testament. He faced many hardships in the
wilderness years of leading the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage to their new home in the Land of Promise. The two verses upon which I want us to focus our attention just now are verse 10 and 12. In verse 10 we read “The length of our days is seventy years - or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. In verse 12 we are encouraged to pray “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” On this December 28, I will observe my 96th birthday, God permitting. My life,
to me, has been and is a wonderful gift from God. The experiences have been varied. There have been moments of difficulties as well as times of joy. Some of the dark moments have been sorrows, job changes, illness both family and personal, combat duty in WWII, prisoner of war time, etc. My testimony is God has been faithful and His grace has been sufficient. Many of you are facing difficult times in this very moment. Paul shares in his writing some of the difficulties he faced. He mentions: imprisonment, shipwrecks, beatings and the thorn in the

In Psalms 46:1, God is presented as our refuge and strength. He is a very present help in time of trouble. In time of difficulties let us: 1. Take our needs to the King of Kings. His palace door is always open; we are welcomed. 2. Bend our knees to Him in prayer. He will bend His ear to hear. 3. God will renew our strength and we will have the joy of becoming an overcomer.

It may not be by mail or a phone call, it may be the bogus handyman or the roofer that shows up telling you that your house needs repair or you need a new roof. These people tend to pray on the elderly and the person that may not be physically able to do the work. Many may want payment in advance then disappear or start the work and not finish it, never to be seen again. It is a good plan to get
recommendations from friends, Lowe’s, Home Depot or someone you trust on home repairs. Be extremely careful who you let into your house. Do not be bullied by someone on the phone or if you receive an official looking letter with a check do not take the chance, take it to your local bank or your local law enforcement agency. Billions of dollars are lost every year because of illegal scams, schemes and cons that citizens fall victim to. Adults with elderly parents, pay attention to

Bonham’s best buy for Holiday Shopping has been the Creative Arts Center’s Sweets, Spirits & Sparkles for over six years. Though the center’s gift shop is always open, the annual bazaar brings out the best from the best artists and artisans in the community - most of them arts center members. Sweets and complimentary mimosas and poinsettias will be served this year, as is customary, and the artist vendors bring a fresh supply of unique and artful gifts for everyone on your Christmas list. There will be jewelry, handmade wood items for the home, lotions and soaps, wreaths and other Christmas decorations, glass - both decorative and practical gifts, paintings, notecards, and much, much more. The sale runs from 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, December 1. Every fifteen minutes during the event, there will be a jewelry or small art giveaway. “Though our gift shop is always a wonderful place to find that perfect gift,
Many of us have a hard time imagining what it must be like to go hungry. But the truth is there are many in our community who experience that terrible reality every day. With the approaching colder weather, the Wolfe City Food Pantry is more focused than ever on providing healthy food to those in need. But we need your help! MARY’S SONG It was unexpected. The angel appeared out of thin air radiant of face and radiant of hair, voice rumbling, deep waters unto deep, words enough to make a woman weep and I was but a child. What words were they? “Behold you shall conceive, Mary maiden meek and mild.” I knew not that I was meek and mild. I knew only consternation. Jesus, bone of bones, flesh of flesh, future King of kings. Before him every knee shall bow, every land and tongue and nation. I could have pled my age. I could have simply said him “No! Not me! I am not ready! Choose another!” I did the very thing He knew I would, and all my being cried out with one accord, Let it be to me according to your Word! And so the deal was struck, the covenant was made between the angel and our God, and me a little maid. For more information, Please contact Tom Long at 903-227-3589

Substance Abuse, Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Are Focuses 01/19/16 for Kiwanians 2/5/13
By Mary-k Ashley Wilson
Kiwanian Liz Dyvig introduced Clayton Jech, Substance Use Treatment Program Counselor from Texoma Community Center (formerly MHMR), who was the speaker at Kiwanis recently. If you are a young person, or if you know of a young person, who needs help with a substance abuse problem, please get in touch with Mr. Jech at 903.957.4847. Help is available. Sheryl Manis and Mary-k Ashley Wilson recently attended a Kiwanis meeting in Durant, Oklahoma, where the Texas-Oklahoma District Governor, Ralph Keen, spoke. Also speaking was Frances Eikner of the Eliminate Project. Kiwanis is working in cooperation with UNICEF to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) around the world. To us, a simple shot and the teta-
nus problem is solved. Not so in developing countries where 34,000 newborns and a significant number of mothers are killed yearly. “Children and mothers who suffer from tetanus go through painful convulsions and excruciating pain. But this disease is completely preventable.” UNICEF and Kiwanis “work to eliminate MNT by: Immunizing women during pregnancy; immunizing women of reproductive age (15-49) through three properly spaced rounds of immunization campaigns in high-risk areas; promoting clean delivery and cord care practices; and careful monitoring for any possible
tetanus cases.” There are only fourteen countries left to eliminate MNT. Kiwanis meets noon on Tuesdays (except major holidays) at the First United Bank in Bonham. If you are interested in helping youth

The regular meeting of the Commissioners Court was held Tuesday, November 20, 2018. All Commissioners and the Judge were present. In Public Forum, Sheriff Johnson spoke to some items he has worked on for the County Jail. The first item was to trace the origin and purpose of some long distance calls from the 5832143 number, within the Sheriff’s office. After some research, the Sheriff found that the Trustees at the jail were allowed long distance phone calls for their service as Trustees, at the expense of the County. The line has since been disconnected, per the Sheriff’s instructions and there will no longer be any free long distance calls by Trustees or inmates. The Sheriff stated he is looking into ways to make the jailing process more transparent. He referenced the Sandra Bland Act, signed into Texas law by the Governor (June
Purple Heart Recipients attending Commissioners Court meeting for sign presentation to establish Fannin County as a Purple Heart County. Photo by Sharon Haynes of 2017). The Sheriff is looking into purchasing time keepers, which will be installed on each cell. He will use the Commissary Fund and not County funds for the purchase. The device will record the time a cell is approached and actions will be recorded, avoiding any misinformation to stand, on either side of the cell door. He is also looking into the purchase of body cams for the jail employees. This would be another source to use, in case of any confrontations. Everything would be recorded. All of the information gathered by the new devices will be saved to a server and readily accessible. The Sheriff stated even though La Salle Corrections is overseeing the jail, the County is still liable for everthing that happens there. There were no other citizens to speak in Public Forum. There were no meeting minutes to approve in Agenda Item 4. Agenda Item 5 Discussion, Consideration and
Action to approve Proclamation proclaiming Fannin County as a Purple Heart County for men and women who have selflessly served their country and this county in the Armed Forces. The Judge read the proclamation and called the Purple Heart recipients present to come forward and speak. Jon Lunkwicz, the Department of Texas State Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart introduced himself. He served in the Army as an infantryman in Vietnam, and was wounded in combat. Commander Lunkwicz thanked the Judge, Commissioners and the citizens of Fannin County for recognizing Purple Heart recipients and for becoming a Purple Heart County. The distinction is recognition of everyone from Fannin County who has served in the military. The Commander presented a sign, to be placed somewhere in the County, which states Fannin County is a Purple Heart County. Com-
missioner Barker moved to accept the proclamation and Commissioner Magness seconded, with the motion carrying unanimously. There was a brief photo opportunity for the Purple Heart recipients in attendance with the Commissioners Court. Agenda Item 6 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve Declaration and Resolution for Fannin County Mental Health Court and authorize the County Judge to sign on behalf of Fannin County. The Mental Health Court, in the best interest of the County, is being established as an Adult Drug Court and has been in operation since January 2010. The Court also approved the resolution for the Mental Health Court be established as an Adult Mental Health Court, which has been in operation since January 2010. Both courts were voted on and approved by the Court. Continued See Purple Heart on page 18

Jamie Baker and Gabe Parker Inform 10/30/18 Kiwanis Club of Lake Fannin Legislation 11/27/18
By Mary-k Ashley Wilson The Kiwanis Club of Bonham was honored to have as their guest speakers James W. Baker III, Director of Pubic Policy for Congressman Ratcliffe, and Gabe Parker, President of the Lake Fannin Volunteers. Baker told the group that on August 15 they had their first meeting with USDA and the Forest Service, in front of subcommittee. The government did not put a fair market value price on the land in order to secure the land. No time frame has been put on Fannin County to pay the money in order to acquire the land. The second clause does not define what payments are. Payments are not just money, but can also be labor, where the labor amounts to a certain amount of money which goes into payment for the land. Where the money comes from has not been defined. The third part is that there is a provision that says that the Lake Fannin area must be used for the public good. The land cannot be commercialized; it cannot be used for private residential areas; all 2,025 acres must be used for the public good. That does not mean that Fannin County cannot charge admission into the area or rental for any of the structures, or for any of the ecosystem projects such as migratory birdwatching. By being able to make charges for the use of Lake Fannin, this will bring down the value of the land. The land cannot be parceled off, as that would literally take an act of Congress. This bill has
passed the Senate Natural Resources Committee. Baker then spoke of a Historical Lease Agreement in which Fannin County would have control of the Historic area which is approximately 197 acres, which includes the entire perimeter of the lake, cabins, campsites, and the lodge. Fannin County would have operational control of Lake Fannin for thirty years. Baker said that provides certainty. Because this is a county government leasing this land, there is no rental agreement, which means that Fannin County does not pay rent to the Forest Service to operate Lake Fannin. The Fannin County Volunteers, a 401(c)3 does not qualify for a rent exemption, whereas the county does. All of this will be a good partnership between the Forest Service, Fannin County, and the Lake Fannin Volunteers. Gabe Parker told of the operating plan the Lake Fannin Volunteers. The County has an agreement with the federal government; Lake Fannin Volunteers will have an agreement with Fannin County to do the heavy lifting. The number one thing the Lake Fannin Volunteers have to do is take care of the foliage at the dam. Foliage will have to be removed by heavy equipment. The second issue that needs to be addressed, according to Parker, is that since no foliage has been removed in the last five years, it is important to keep the foliage cleared. The third issue is that with campers, and others, the

back gate must be cleared and maintained to allow an escape in case of fire. Since the county is the lease holder, it will fall on them to cooperate to get all this work done. Much of this will take the heavy equipment to get the work done. The Lake Fannin Volunteers are looking for members who want to help see that this important venture for Fannin County comes to fruition. Parker believes, and most agree with him, that Lake Fannin is the gem of Fannin County. This is going to be the area that attracts visitors,

especially due to its access to the Red River. Parker pointed out the importance of the County owning Lake Fannin. There is much hard work to be done and it will be taken one step at a time. Parker pointed out that there are some activities that will not be allowed, due to liability, at Lake Fannin: Swimming, horseback riding and other equestrian events, and trampolines. There will be hiking and bike trails. In addition to James Baker, guests included Maria Hix, Jeannie Perry, and Jack Champion. PROFESSIONALLY MANAGED INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS with NO Commissions!
Securities offered through Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. member FINRA/SIPC Investment Advisory Services offered through Raymond James Financial Services Advisors, Inc.
In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife Department law enforcement reports.
Lost and Found While patrolling for hunting violations recently, a San Jacinto County game warden came upon a vehicle in the Sam Houston National Forest. The warden approached the vehicle and made contact with a hunter who said he was waiting for his buddy. He told the warden they became interested in hunting on public lands after seeing it on the Lone Star Law television series, and this was their first time in the Sam Houston National Forest. He had been waiting on his friend for a couple of hours and was worried he might be lost. He led the warden to the location he had hunted and said his friend had been hunting approximately 100 yards from that area. After about an hour of searching, the missing hunter was located in a thicket and safely returned to their vehicle. Both hunters were grateful they were not spending the night in the woods. Didn’t Stop in the Name of Love On October 7, game wardens in Presidio and Brewster County were patrolling south on U.S. Highway 67 when they were flagged down by some motorists on the side of the road who were victims of a hit and run. The suspect vehicle description was given, and the game wardens headed south in pursuit. State troopers were advised of the accident and were able to obtain a better description of the vehicle after interviewing the victims. The game wardens located the suspect vehicle with a missing driver-side mirror, a traffic stop was conducted,

and the driver was arrested without incident just outside Shafter. The trooper working the accident case came to the arresting location to match the chrome from the debris left by the suspect’s vehicle at the accident location. The driver of the truck was charged with accident involving damage to a vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor, and placed in the Hudspeth County jail. During transport to jail, the suspect freely admitted to being in a hurry to see his girlfriend in Mexico. The case is pending. Next Time Use the Entrance Gate A Morris County game warden was patrolling along Interstate 30 near the White Oak Creek Wildlife Management Area boundary when they spotted a vehicle parked along the shoulder next to the Sulphur River. The location is not a legal access entry point for the WMA, so the warden set up along the Interstate to observe the vehicle and, about 30 minutes after sundown; two men came out of the woods carrying shotguns. It was discovered the two subjects had been hunting for hogs and both received citations. Sharing and Liking His Trophy Buck On October 13, a Webb County game warden was reviewing a Facebook post of a 15-point deer taken with a bow during a hunt in Laredo. As the warden began looking through the pictures posted online, he verified the hunter’s name and information. He determined the hunter was from Louisiana and had harvested the deer without a hunting license. When the subject was questioned regarding the harvest of the deer, he denied hunting and

requested the warden prove he had. After the warden advised him of the photos he had obtained from Facebook, the hunter apologized and admitted to harvesting his trophy deer without a hunting license. Cases have been filed, and restitution is pending. Bass Busted While patrolling Longhorn Dam on the Colorado River around sunset, a Travis County game warden observed an individual with two gutted largemouth bass, homemade spear gun, and a Hawaiian sling; not a legal means and method for taking game fish in Texas. Upon contact, the individual admitted to using the spear gun to catch the bass and not having a fishing license. He stated he knew it was illegal but said he wanted some bass because it was getting late in the season. Multiple citations were issued, and the fish were seized. Citations and civil restitution are pending. Overstaying His Welcome On October 6, game wardens responded to a trespassing call in Concho County from an irate landowner who explained a flatbed trailer, an ATV and two empty bow cases were located on his property. With an idea of who the suspect might be, several calls were made to local businesses, and the individual was found checked in at a nearby motel. They located and visited with the suspect, his girlfriend, and the girlfriend’s brother. The suspect, from Mesquite, had been invited to hunt on the property the weekend before but did not have any luck. The landowner, also from Mesquite, agreed to take the suspect on another hunt but explained he had prior commitments the following weekend. The suspect later decided to invite himself to the deer camp that weekend not knowing the landowner’s brother would be in the camp. Cases pending.

csfuneral@cableone.net Magness. Motion carried. Agenda Item 12 Discussion, consideration and action to approve a budget amendment for County Clerk Election department 404 to increase salary and benefits. Interim County Auditor Alicia Whipple said this item was inadvertently left off of the budget. She needs $16,481.32 to pay election workers for Ms. Biggar. When asked for any further comments concerning the item, Tammy Biggar said she would just like a little cushion of $200, instead of the amount to the penny. Commissioner Lackey made the motion to approve, Commissioner Magness seconded. Motion carried. Agenda Item 13 Discussion, consideration and action to add two Reserve Deputies to County insurance for Constable Precinct 3. Alicia Whipple told the Court Constable Mayberry has added a Deputy Reserve and is in the process of adding another. The positions are not currently on the books. Commissioner Barker said there have never been any Reserve Deputies for Constables. He does not see the need for them in Fannin County. Commissioner Barker said if the Constable had come to court to explain his reasoning, he would have considered it. Commissioner Barker made the motion that the Court will not allow Reservists for Constables at this time. Commissioner Whitlock seconded, motion carried. Agenda Item 14 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve payment of bills. Motion by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commisisioner Lackey. Motion carried.

Kid’s Christmas Craft Fair
By Christina Clark Be sure to mark your calendar for the Kid’s Christmas Craft Fair which will take place at the McKenzie United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 8, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. It will be at the Annex next to the church. Kids will make homemade Christmas ornaments, decorate cookies, create Christmas ornaments and much more. This free event will include lunch, music and the nativity story. Everyone in the community is invited.
Agenda Item 15 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge. Commissioner Whitlock mentioned Thanksgiving and he hopes everyone enjoys their time and is thankful for everything. He also mentioned Volunteer Fire Departments and First Responders. Mr. Whitlock stated they do a great job and we should give them a call, a pat on the back. Let them know you appreciate them. Commissioner Barker mentioned there was a very extraordinary group of gentlement here this morning. He was very pleased to have the Purple Heart recipients here. Fannin County has always supported the armed forces. Commissioner Magness said he received a phone call from someone informing him of a location he could find a Road Closed sign and some road cones. The Commissioner said he got a truck bed full of them back yesterday. Commissioner Lackey said he hoped everyone has a good holiday. He also would like for folks to be patient with the road conditions. FEMA is supposed to be here week after next. There was a lot of rock lost in the heavy rains. Hopefully, the County will get some assistance. Mr. Lackey’s son, Jake, is a Firefighter in McKinney and was named one of the top 50 in the State 2 weeks ago. He is a very hard worker. Mr. Lackey is very proud of him. Judge Carter mentioned that someone who signed a nondisclosure notice released the information about the $28 million bid. He was displeased that the information was made public. It was not supposed to be released. He stated that fake news costs the County tremendously. He said when you sign a nondisclosure and you let it get out, it costs us money. The Judge said his secretary has accepted a job of Office Manager at the office of Mary Bloodworth. He informed Randy Moore he would need to find a secretary. The Judge wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Meeting adjourned.

Still Scoring Success: 7/22/14 DC girls overcome offseason exits, reach Thanksgiving 9-1 in basketball By Rich Hilliard DODD CITY -- Highscoring games have been a hallmark during the last few seasons, as Dodd City has become a state championship contender in Class 1A girls basketball. Graduation and another departure following last season’s secondconsecutive run to the state championship game took away two top scorers -- both all-state selections from two different organizations, to boot -- from that squad. Junior Delaney Pilliod and sophomore Dani Baccus, holdovers from that team, have helped fill that void and keep that characteristic possible. “Both have done a very good job,” said sixthyear Dodd City head girls basketball coach Alex Stephenson. “I did not doubt they would fill those roles.” Pilliod recorded her second 25-point scoring effort of the season on Nov. 20, as the host Lady Hornets, ranked No. 2 in the 1A girls poll by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, defeated Christian Home School Educators of Sulphur Springs (CHESS), 82-17, to reach Thanksgiving with a 9-1 record. She also garnered 25 points on Nov. 17 as undefeated Bullard, ranked No. 6 in 4A, edged Dodd City, 55-49, in overtime in the Saltillo Tournament championship game during the Lady Hornets’ lone loss. Baccus has posted games of 23 points against 2A Campbell on Nov. 16 and 20 against 1A host Saltillo on Nov. 17 during tournament play, coming off a serious offseason injury -- a broken right elbow (her non-shooting side) which necessitated two screws to fix and an ensuing four months to rehab. Baccus last March garnered a spot on the 1A all-state tournament basketball team and an
all-state selection from the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Meanwhile, sophomore Journie Hilliard, also a TGCA all-state selection last season, reached Thanksgiving having five times hit or surpassed 20 points during the first 10 games of the new season: 26 in consecutive games against 3A DeKalb on Nov. 10 and 2A Tom Bean on Nov. 13 to start the campaign; 23 against 3A Prairiland on Nov. 15; and 20 on Nov. 16 against 4A Quinlan Ford and Nov. 19 against 2A Bells. Dodd City has also added another doublefigure scoring threat in junior Cassidy Herron, a first-team all-district 13-2A selection last season for 2A Celeste “When I came in Coach (Stephenson) said they have high expectations here. I said I can live up to that,” said Herron, who had 17 points against CHESS on Nov. 20. “It’s hard sometimes.” Herron has also posted games of 12 points against 2A Clarksville and 11 against Prairiland on Nov. 15 during the Saltillo Tournament and 10 on Nov. 19 at Bells. Herron, a varsity starter since her freshman year at Celeste, joins freshman Kylee Graves as newcomers to the Lady Hornets varsity squad. Sarah Brent and Marissa Mills equate the only seniors on the squad, as of Nov. 20. Brent had a season-high 10 points against CHESS, Mills posted a seasonhigh 12 points on against Prairiland on Nov. 15 and each frequently contribute scoring. The efforts by all have come as the Lady Hornets have faced much larger schools thus far. “I knew this competition was the type this team needed,” said Stephenson. “It will be very beneficial come February.”

Falcons garner first football playoffs win in five years By Rich Hilliard Fannindel garnered its first six-man postseason football win in five years on Nov. 16. The Falcons defeated Gordon, 66-48, in the Class 1A Division II bi-district round. The win advanced Fannindel (6-2) to the regional round to play Iredell (10-0) at Italy at 5 p.m. on Nov. 23. Fannindel last advanced to the regional round in 2013, following a 54-48 win over Apple Springs in the 1A Division I bi-district round. Both bi-district wins came under head coach Gabe Lane, who returned to Fannindel football this season for his second stint at the helm. Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home Salute World War II Veteran Doyle Taylor On His 100th Birthday
BONHAM, TEXAS – Veterans Land Board Chairman George P. Bush announced the City of Bonham designated Friday, November 16, 2018, as Doyle Taylor Day in honor of the Navy veteran’s 100th birthday. The proclamation was read Friday morning at a private reception at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home. Taylor, a resident at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home, will celebrated his 100th birthday with his sister, two grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren during the reception. Taylor was presented with a certificate from Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, as well as a resolution and flag from Texas State Senator Bob Hall. A Bonham city official read the proclamation at the reception, as well. Taylor was born on November 16, 1918, in North Zulch, Texas. He grew up on a 300-acre farm with his parents and four younger sisters. As a young man, he went to work at North American Aircraft Corporation in Dallas. On September 22, 1942, at the age of 23, Doyle Taylor enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served at Naval Air Station Alameda in California. After three years of service, he was honorably discharged as an Aviation Metalsmith 3rd Class on his 27th birthday. After leaving the Navy, Taylor took his wife, Celia, and their only child, Larry Taylor, to Grand Prairie, Texas. He worked as a mechanic at Steakley Chevrolet until his retirement. He then moved to Gilmer, Texas where he and his wife enjoyed retirement by fishing, gardening, and raising cattle. Mr. Taylor has been a resident of the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home since February 2016.
