TCOG to offer third household hazardous waste collection event this year Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson Counties 07/02/19

SHERMAN, NOVEMBER 23, 2021 - Officials at Texoma Council of Governments have announced an appointment-only

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event for Saturday, December 11, 2021 that will take place at the TCOG parking lot in Sher-

man. Collection will begin at 8:00 am and end at 12:00 pm. Despite the lack of yearround HHW collection facilities in this region, TCOG is

the recipient of grant funds from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), SEP penalty monies from a TCEQ enforcement

action, and a contribution from the city of Sherman, each allowing the organization to offer regular collection events throughout the

Texoma region. “Without a local recycling center that accepts household hazardous waste, Texoma canbenefit greatly from this event,” stated Chris Carr, TCOG’s Regional Services Specialist. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), describes HHW as leftover household products that can catch fire, react, or explode under certain circumstances, or that are corrosive or toxic. Products, such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain ingredients that are hazardous and require special care when you dispose of them. Improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and threaten human health. The HHW collection event has been a well-attended, high-demand event, serving as a means of protecting our region from the adverse effects of hazardous waste dumping, saving cities and counties the high cost of HHW disposal fees and reducing the cost of crews coming to pick up and dispose of the waste.

By Bro. Bill Beasley Isaiah 53 The Christmas story had a small beginning in the promise of a child to be born. But as God moved, many prophecies were given to us through the inspired pens of Old Testament writers. Slowly but with a growing faith the ears of Israel began to listen and their heart

began to long for fulfillment. The Book of Isaiah has been acclaimed in many studies as the centerpiece of Messianic prophecy. In fact, I remember that one covered in my seminary days called “Christ in Isaiah.” Isaiah 53 gives a prophetic account of “God’s Suffering Servant.” Moreover, because of a very personal encounter in a discussion of this passage the Christmas story in prophecy has been spoken out clearly. It has given to me a more complete grasp of God’s message to us. In the early 1950’s, Mrs. Beasley and I had been invited by new friends to have

Sunday Morning Re-take

Hello everyone! We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning! The Bible tells us in Psalm 118:1, “O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.” As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we ought to be mindful of the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon us. As I have said before, the Lord has blessed our church in so many ways, especially since the merge. We’ve gained a lot of wonderful people, and we thank God for this. We are certainly looking forward to the blessings that He has in store for us to come! I am drawn to go in a different direction for our song

Are You A Christian?

Do you serve God?

reference this week. To keep with the Thanksgiving theme, this song was written by James Easter and his 2 brothers. “There’s a roof up above me, I’ve a good place to sleep, there’s food on my table, and shoes on my feet. You gave me your love, Lord, and a fine family. Thank you, Lord, for your blessings on me.” If you are looking to find a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church! We hope to see you this coming Lord’s day! Josh Stevenson Central Baptist Church Bonham, TX https://www.facebook.com/ Ephesians cbcfannin4:18

Sunday lunch in their home. After enjoying their hospitality and fellowship the lady of the house revealed a searching heart. It was near Christmas and these are the words I heard her speak. “Brother Bill and Sadie, I am not a believer in Jesus. In fact, I have not accepted the teaching that Jesus is real. Will you help me to understand?” I was directed to begin a study of Isaiah 53 with her. Her acceptance came

slowly, but with sincerity. In time, my heart was blessed as she came to believe this prophetic message. That was 60+ years ago. Christmas 1956 will always be remembered. She has since claimed her eternal reward. The Christ of the Cross paid the price of our redemption.

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. He gave reasons why he believed it might be better to have the flag poles relocated to the North side with one of those reasons being that it is the North side where the Rededication Ceremony will be being held. After hearing from Sherry with the Auditors Office as to why she believed the flags should remain on the South side, Fannin County Purchasing Agent Michelle Case came to the podium to read a letter from Alicia Whipple detailing her reasons for the flags to remain on the South side. Included in her letter was the fact that the South side is the actual address side of the Courthouse and is the side that is first seen when entering into the city of Bonham. After Alicia’s wellworded letter was read, Judge Moore asked for a vote from those in attendance, which resulted in a majority voting for the flags to remain on the South side. Judge Moore then called for a motion and Commissioner Lackey made the motion for the flags to remain on the South side. A motion was seconded by Commissioner Magness and passed. 15. Discussion, consideration, and action to set a Public Hearing regarding a reinvestment zone and tax abatement agreement with Tongrun International in Bonham: The speaker that was slated to speak on this was not present, so Judge Moore made a statement about how this company is a local company in Bonham that is primarily making its product in Bonham and currently has about 98 employees with the expectation to have about 200 employees by the end of next year. He explained how this is a huge benefit for the county and is a tremendous deal for Bonham as well as Fannin County. Commissioner Lane added that 70” televisions are being built out there that are being sold by Amazon and Best Buy with Judge Moore noting how the menu boards that you see when you drive through McDonald’s and Burger King are also being built there. He noted that they are providing very good wages to their employees. 16. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve payment of bills: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve. 17. Public Forum: A citizen of Fannin County had called in a comment that was read by Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow regarding the location of the flag poles. 18. EXECUTIVE SESSION: Personnel Matters – a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Sec. 551.074 of the Government Code for (1) deliberation of personnel matters regarding the appointment, employment, evaluation, reassignment, duties, discipline, or dismissal of a public officer or employee; or (2) to hear a complaint or charge against an officer or employee – regarding Environmental Development: Motion was made, sec-

Executive Session at 9:44 a.m. 19. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Executive Session: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to return to Regular Session at 10:06 a.m. Judge Moore said all he wanted to say was that the court hopes all county employees have a wonderful Holiday Season and that the court appreciates all their hard work. He noted that the Executive Session was about helping the Environmental Department make some decisions. He then thanked all the county employees in attendance along with state employee FC District Attorney Richard Glaser and reiterated how good it is when everyone works together. 20. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Magness agreed with the Judge’s comments about how great the county employees are, wished them all a Happy Thanksgiving, noting how hard-working and conscientious they are. He touched on the problem of DOT sign vandalism, thanked everyone for their attendance, and wished all a Happy Thanksgiving. Commissioner Lackey wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, congratulated Grayson County on the Texas Instruments project that will benefit everyone in the area. He noted he was thankful for the good county employees and asked the public to be mindful of those workers looking to enjoy the Holidays with their families and have patience with minor problems. He also thanked everyone for coming. Commissioner Lane echoed the previous comments, noting she is certainly thankful for all the employees she works with and for all they do. Wished safe travels to those traveling this Holiday, thanked everyone for coming, and wished all a Happy Thanksgiving. Commissioner Self jokingly said with the cost of gas being what it is, you might want to encourage others to visit you instead of vice versa. He then thanked everyone for coming and wished everyone a Good Thanksgiving. Judge Moore started with the update of Covid being, active cases are at 33, fatalities are 153 and the hospitalization rate is 3.69% this week. He commented on how Fannin County is still having much better stats on active cases of covid than other surrounding counties noting that Grayson has 135 active cases, Lamar has 93, Hunt has 83, and Collin County has 1,779 active cases. He wished everyone a very good Thanksgiving and urged all to think about those they are thankful for and what a wonderful place Fannin County is to live in. He thanked everyone for their attendance and advised caution on the roads for all traveling. 21. Adjourn: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 10:17 a.m.

In a medium bowl, add the cream cheese, garlic salt, and 2 Tbsp. of olive brine from the jar. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth, then chill until firm, about 30 minutes. Once mixture has chilled, wrap the olives. Pat an olive dry, and scoop out a bit of the cream cheese mixture. Press the cream cheese around the olive until it’s completely wrapped. Roll in crushed walnuts. Repeat with remaining olives, then place in refrigerator to chill until firm. Slice in half, if desired, and serve. You can also put a toothpick in these and serve, either way it is a pretty presentation! Enjoy! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the engagement letter with Commissioner Self seconding the motion and the motion passed. 13. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding holiday pay and the payment of comp time in the Fannin County Employee Manual: Commissioner Lackey began a discussion about a possible discrepancy existing in the Manual that would lead to excess pay above the holiday pay and the time and a half paid for working on a Holiday. Home Country: Slim Randles There is a nighttime sweetness and hope that hovers over us this time of year here at home. This is a time for summing up and looking ahead … and a time for dreams. 5/19/15 And at night… ah, that’s the time, isn’t it? Outside it’s dark, December dark, and we’re inside2/4/20 and warm and cocooned up. The cold makes our world shrink, especially at night. But we have our dreams. For Janice Thomas, our art teacher at the high school, it’s that painting she’s planning. She makes starts at it, from time to time, but she’s wise enough to know she isn’t good enough to paint it yet. She paints other things well, but that one … it has to be perfect. It will be the painting of a lifetime, she knows. Doc will drift off to sleep tonight thinking about that new fly rod. He has half a dozen, of course, that will take about any weight line, and let him catch anything from mouse to moose. But even the most expensive rod isn’t what he dreams of. This year, for Christmas, he’s giving himself a rod-builder’s jig, and he will make his own rod from a Sage blank. That will be the one. It will have his own wrappings and he’ll put the ferrules on it himself. He’ll be able to feel the fish breathe with this one. It will be true and wonderful and last forever. For cowboy Steve, the December dream is always the same: staying in that little cabin. The one with a turret and a corral. And hearing ol’ Snort happily eating out there in the corral. And exploring. Time enough to explore those mountains with Snort. There is a nighttime sweetness and hope that hovers over us this time of year. Here’s to dreams.

Letter to the Editor Gift of Love

Let’s make this Christmas a very special one for all the families that are in need here in Fannin County. We can do this by giving the Gift of Love. A gift that cannot be bought, For it must be given freely from your heart to others. This can be done by you and me by just donating your change that may be jingling in your pocket into the Red Kettle at Wal-Mart as you leave. It will then be added to all of the other donations. Soon the donations of your change will become dollars. These dollars will put a hot meal on the table of a needed Family at Christmas and a gift under a tree for a special child. Your gift will be knowing that your donation of Love will be letting a family know that we here in Fannin County do care for them. I ask that all of Fannin County will join me by making a change donation so that others may have a very Merry Christmas. Jim A. McDonald

TCOG has offered two other HHW collection events this year, in both Cooke and Fannin counties. The last Grayson County collection event was held in October of 2020, where over 120 households participated. “Many locals have already benefitted from these events,” explained Carr. “Last year, we were able to divert over 35,000 lbs. of HHW from landfills. This included 15,000 lbs. of latex paint and nearly 13,000 lbs. of electronic waste.” Acceptable items collected at the event include household quantities of hazardous waste (household chemicals, batteries, pesticides, insecticides, etc.) and electronic items (computers, phones, printers,

9/13/16 City Councilman Tim La Vergne II 2/16/21 recognizes Elijah !

Shine Bright for the Holidays A few months back, I noticed a young boy by the name of Elijah who wanted to clean up the parks after he saw visitors leaving trash behind on the grounds, even with trash cans provided. His father made a post on Facebook about his willingness to make a difference and to pick up trash to make the parks cleaner for all and to save the planet from pollution. His story touched my heart and I wanted to show my appreciation for his volunteerism and giving his time weekly to pickup trash around the city parks. This evening, his family gathered at City of

Bonham, Texas as I recognized Elijah! He got to sit in my chair and see how it feels to be a council member from my view. I got to present him with a special plaque that showcased his extraordinary efforts at beautifying Bonham! His dedication to giving back was also noticed by Officer Kolbee Purdue of the Bonham Police Department, and he requested to be a part of this special presentation with some goodies.

er! Thank you, Elijah! Keep up the great work! You did an outstanding job!

organization dedicated to bringing nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore and preserve our priceless environment. The Heard was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard at the age of 80. In a time when the rate of expansion of the Metroplex was slower than today, she foresaw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. Today, the Heard’s mission of bringing nature and people together is carried out through education, particularly of young people, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation. To understand a Military Veteran, you must know:

We left home as teenagers or in our early twenties for an unknown adventure. We loved our country enough to defend it and protect it with our own lives. We said goodbye to friends and family and everything we knew. We learned the basics and then we scattered in the wind to the far corners of the Earth. We found new friends and new family. We became brothers and sisters regardless of color, race or creed. We had plenty of good times, and plenty of bad times. We didn’t get enough sleep. We smoked and/or drank too much. We picked up both good and bad habits. We worked hard and played harder. We didn’t earn a great wage. We experienced the happiness of mail call and the sadness of missing important events. We didn’t know when, or even if, we were ever going to see home again. We grew up fast, and yet somehow, we never grew up at all. We fought for our freedom, as well as the freedom of others. Some of us saw actual combat, and some of us didn’t. Some of us saw the world, and some of us didn’t. Some of us dealt with physical warfare, most of us dealt with psychological warfare. We have seen and experienced and dealt with things that we can’t fully describe or explain, as not all of our sacrifices were physical. We participated in time honored ceremonies and rituals with each other, strengthening our bonds and camaraderie. We counted on each other to

get our job done and sometimes to survive it at all. We have dealt with victory and tragedy. We have celebrated and mourned. We lost a few along the way. When our adventure was over, some of us went back home, some of us started somewhere new and some of us never came home at all. We have told amazing and hilarious stories of our exploits and adventures. We share an unspoken bond with each other, that most people don’t experience, and few will understand. We speak highly of our own branch of service, and poke fun at the other branches. We know however, that, if needed, we will be there for our brothers and sisters and stand together as one, in a heartbeat. Being a Veteran is something that had to be earned, and it can never be taken away. It has no monetary value, but at the same time it is a priceless gift. People see a Veteran and they thank them for their service. When we see each other, we give that little upwards head nod, or a slight smile, knowing that we have shared and experienced things that most people have not. So, from myself to the rest of the veterans out there, I commend and thank you for all that you have done and sacrificed for your country. Try to remember the good times and make peace with the bad times. Share your stories. But most importantly, stand tall and proud, for you have earned the right to be called a Veteran. I’m a VETERAN! Boyer’s Jewelry

WE BUY GOLD!

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? Press Release - This month the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) spotlighted the recent rebirth of Willow Branch Creek, completed as part of our Bois d’Arc Lake project. This work lies at the heart of all related improvement efforts, which together form one of the largest environmental restoration projects in the country. The story focused

on how the 70+ miles of stream enhancements are key to the success of other restoration efforts across the site, including: • The planting of approximately 5 million trees • Improving 3,200 acres of native grasslands • Restoring more than 8,500 acres of wetland The article was featured in the magazine’s November/

Game Warden Field Notes 11/3/15

Off the Road Again An Amarillo district game warden was patrolling in Potter County after dark when he was notified about an injured individual who had been “run over” by an all-terrain vehicle. The warden responded immediately. He found one adult male hit by an ATV and suffering non-life-threatening injuries to his legs. The victim and other eyewitnesses at the scene identified another adult male as the driver of the ATV. Upon speaking with the driver of the ATV, the warden noticed that he had heavily slurred speech patterns, glassy/bloodshot eyes, and the odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. The victim of the collision was transported to an Amarillo hospital. The driver of the ATV admitted hitting the victim with the ATV and was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated and deadly conduct. The driver was booked into the Potter County Jail without incident. Caught on Camera In September, a Tyler County game warden received information on individuals potentially participating in road hunting. The warden worked with a landowner setting up surveillance cameras in their field. Not long after he set up the monitoring system, he observed a slow-moving vehicle spotlighting and headed towards his location. The warden initiated a traffic stop, determining the subjects were hunting at night. Inside the vehicle, the warden located a loaded .22 long rifle. Additionally, the subject was a minor operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Charges are pending. Mama’s Got Your Back Two Harris County game wardens followed up on a local poaching complaint and discovered a suspect who had harvested a white-tailed doe had done so without landowner consent. The suspect confessed to poaching and when asked to collect the deer meat, was surprised to find his mom had hidden the illegal deer meat under the couch while the wardens visited with him outside the home. Multiple charges and restitution pending.

EPA Misses The Mark On Farm Herbicide Evaluations

3/23/21

By Jennifer Whitlock Field Editor: Texas Agriculture Daily Farm and ranch groups are frustrated with the final biological evaluations made by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on atrazine, glyphosate and simazine. Grower organizations, including American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF), say EPA failed to take the groups’ comments and realworld scenarios into account before releasing the evaluations showing the three common farm herbicides are “likely to adversely affect” certain listed endangered or threatened species or designated critical habitats. The agency used unrealistic assumptions about how farmers and ranchers use these chemicals, according to AFBF and the American Soybean Association (ASA). As an example, the biological evaluation for

10/5/21

glyphosate assumed soybean farmers apply 3.75 pounds per acre per application, but a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey shows the true rate is only one pound per acre—nearly four times less. “We are disappointed EPA was presented with realworld evidence of limited pesticide use but failed to use the most accurate data in its biological evaluations. By overestimating the use of these crop protection tools, the EPA also overestimated the impact on species,” AFBF President Zippy Duvall said. “Herbicides are vital tools in climate-smart farming because they enable farmers to use minimum tillage practices and fewer resources to raise their crops. EPA must take a well-rounded approach to its biological evaluations and use best available data when deciding on rules that will affect how farmers grow healthy crops.” It’s frustrating, the groups say, because the “likely to

adversely affect” designation means EPA may reasonably expect at least one individual animal or plant from federally listed threatened or endangered species may be exposed to the pesticide at a sufficient level to cause an adverse effect. Experimental populations and species proposed as candidates for listing are included in the definition of “listed species,” too. And the potential harm to one individual plant or animal isn’t weighed against whether a species’ population is almost recovered to the point of being delisted, Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Associate Director of Commodity and Regulatory Activities Brant Wilbourn said. “EPA isn’t making a balanced decision here by completely ignoring input and data provided by farmers, ranchers and other credible sources in agriculture,” he said. “In releasing these biological evaluations, EPA is only encouraging consumer

suspicion of important crop protection tools like glyphosate, which is the most widely used herbicide in the world. If we lost access to glyphosate, farming as we know it—and accompanying yields—would change drastically.” Now EPA must consult with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service on hundreds of additional species, which Wilbourn noted would have otherwise been unnecessary if EPA had used more data in its decision-making process. “In having to further consult with those other agencies, EPA has significantly slowed the herbicide evaluation process,” Wilbourn said. “The resulting product restrictions will probably do nothing to actually protect threatened species while increasing farmer and rancher regulatory burdens and costs.”

Winter wheat continued to struggle with lack of moisture. Producers were replanting poorly germinated areas but slow to apply fertilizers due to increased cost and no rainfall. Some areas reported sufficient moisture for wheat and good growing conditions. Winter ryegrass was coming along, but overseeded fields were producing slower. There has been limited stocker cattle movement to wheat pastures, so supplemental feeding of hay was prevalent. Cattle looked excellent, and calves were being weaned and shipped. Cotton harvest was complete in some areas and getting underway in other areas with almost all fields defoliated.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 26, 2021 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham, TX. Interment followed at Arledge Ridge Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Aaron Hudson, Phillip Gantt, Michael Gantt, Jim Gantt, Chad Higgins, and Cody Worth. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Gregg Higgins and Mac London. JOHN RICHARD HOELZEL JR. Cleda Bee Powell Hamilton arrived into this world on March 18,1936 along with her twin sister, Oueda Dee Powell Gantt. They became a force to behold, each knowing when the other was in need and always being there for each other. Born in Bailey, Texas to parents James William and Alva May McKelva Powell, the twins arrived in the middle of a large family. Later in high school she met the love of her life, Don Max Hamilton. As a young couple they shared a love of basketball. Don and Cleda married March 6,1957 in Midland, Texas. They had a once in a lifetime love and their devotion to each other is evident in the life and family they made. In March of 1967, they partnered again opening their business, Suburban Heating and Air Conditioning Company. They worked tirelessly to create one of the most successful air conditioning companies in the Dallas area which today remains family owned and operated. Cleda left this world on November 21, 2021 at the age of eighty-five to again be with her husband Don who preceded her death by sixty-eight days. Cleda is survived by her children and their families: Gary and Lauretta Hamilton; their daughters Susan and Cate and her partner Brian Coleman. Gaylann and Ina Hamilton; their children Bonnie Geistweidt, husband Jeremy and their children Addison and Brayden. Kimberly Hamilton and fiancé Carlos Perez. Eric Hamilton, wife Stacie Hamilton and their sons Jake, Grant, and Luke. Denise and Frank (Buddy) Roberts; their sons Chris Roberts, wife Rachel and their daughters Ava and Nora. Matthew Roberts his partner Brandi and Matt’s daughters Arianna and Brooklynn. Cleda is survived by sister Ann Higgins of Bonham as well as her nieces and nephews. Cleda will be remembered as the most loving wife, mother, Gamma, and great-grandmother. She was kind and generous to her loved ones and those around her. She made many positive changes to the lives of others with her thoughtful gifts. She effortlessly made grand holiday meals for the whole family and friends as well. She created warm and comfortable celebrations. She loved music, enjoyed gardening, and tending to her many plants. Her crossword puzzle skills were unparalleled. Especially dear to her were the times she spent outdoors; clearing brush, working cows, and the campfire sing alongs at their farm. The indelible memories made there were lively and many. While we mourn Mom’s loss, our family takes comfort in knowing that she and Daddy are together again.

Final Lake Watershed Planning Meetings Prepare Plan for Use

Press Release -This December NTMWD will be finalizing the Bois d’Arc Lake watershed protection plan in coordination with local stakeholders. The plan addresses potential threats to Bois d’Arc Lake’s water quality and provides voluntary recommendations for protecting its watershed (all land that rainfall flows over on its way to the lake). NTMWD held public meetings since last summer as part of the collaborative and transparent process to develop the watershed protection plan. Meeting stakeholders represent a cross section of the community, and they have played a central role in shaping the plan. November’s meeting discussed and provided input on

strategies to reduce pollution, including feral hog control and reducing pollutants from urban and rural sources. Meeting participants will consider and approve the draft plan at the last meeting in Bonham, on December 8. The draft plan will be posted on the lake website for public review and comment. Once finalized and accepted by EPA, the plan’s voluntary measures will be eligible for grant funding. The goal is to secure this funding and start implementing key measures next spring. Read more about the plan and the upcoming December meeting: https://boisdarclake. org/construction/the-bois-darclake-watershed/.

Taking Charge: Bonhi volleyball’s Kirkpatrick All-State hoops duo, once reserves helping nets District 11-3A’s Class 1A champion Lady Hornets start w/wins top hitter award

Dodd City senior Kylee Graves (23) stays ahead of a Bells player on Nov. 16.

Dodd City senior Ali Preas (15) drives to the basket on Nov. 16.

Bonham’s Alli Kirkpatrick hits at the net on Aug. 7 as teammate Breauna Killgo watches. Both are juniors.

Dodd City senior Tori Dotson (right) while on defense stays in step with a Bells player on Nov. 16.

Dodd City junior Lindsey Mauppin (12) drives with the basketball on Nov. 16.

Dodd City sophomore Addyson Chaney (5) handles the basketball during an offensive possession on Nov. 16. Leonard’s Allie Shulze serves on Oct. 5 during District 11-3A volleyball. Story and photos by Rich Hilliard

New Dodd City head girls basketball coach Landon Dyer speaks with the Lady Hornets during a timeout on Nov. 16. Story and photos by Rich Hilliard Departures took a toll on 2021 Class 1A State girls basketball champion Dodd City in the months following their undefeated title last March. Those included losing three of five starters -- all-State selections all -- and the head coach who had guided the Lady Hornets into being a perennial postseason powerhouse during the last seven years. Preseason rankings by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches reflected those subtractions: Dodd

City ranked No. 22 in 1A in the organization’s first Top 25 poll to start the 2021-22 campaign -- instead of atop or near there, as champions often do, to start the season following winning a title. Those facts haven’t stopped the Lady Hornets from starting this season with wins, playing much larger schools -3As, 4As and a 5A -- in November in preparation for starting in December toward their 10th-consecutive undefeated district championship and 12thstraight postseason. TABC does pick them to win 23-1A

again. All-State selections Tori Dotson and Kylee Graves, now seniors, lead a roster which will look for more success this season under new head coach Landon Dyer. Joining them are senior Ali Preas, junior Lindsey Mauppin -- second-team all-district selections a year ago -and sophomore Addyson Chaney -- all now logging minutes as starters, after previously contributing off the bench to the past success for Dodd City.

Bonham junior Alli Kirkpatrick garnered the hitter of the year honor to lead Fannin County players in the All-District 11-3A volleyball awards for 2021. Kirkpatrick, who shared the same award last year in the same district, totaled 566 kills and 347 digs during the whole season for Bonham, which forced a play-in for the fourth and final district postseason berth with and before falling to Whitewright. Juniors Breauna Killgo and Brianna Rodriguez of Bonham on the first team joined senior Allie Shulze of Leonard, which missed the playoffs -- but defeated postseason-bound Pottsboro in its district finale. Senior Paizley Vaught and sophomore Kate Bounds of Bonham joined junior Abby Cavender of Leonard on the second team. Seniors Paiton Sudderth, Mackenzie Hammonds and

Reagan Whitehouse joined junior Lainey Johnson of Leonard in earning an honorable mention. Seniors Alexus Osborn and Alejandra Soto of Bonham also each earned an honorable mention. Academic all-district included: junior Jacey Foster, junior Hannah Harris, junior Savannah Ware, junior Sara Westbrook, junior Triniti Zachary, freshman Sydnee Richardson, Abby Cavender, sophomore Keara Cavender, Johnson, Whitehouse, Sudderth, Hammonds, Shulze of Leonard; and freshman Hingrid Pedraza, sophomore Kylee Trompler, senior Nuvia Esquivel, junior Aubri Pendergrass, Soto, Killgo, Bounds, Vaught, Osborn, Rodriguez and Kirkpatrick of Bonham. State-finalist Gunter headed the district; whether 11-3A will remain intact will be revealed early next year when the 2022 biennial classification and district realignment is announced.

Fannin County Community Ministries Thanks North Texas Food Bank for their grant of $6700.00

Looking for Native American Indians, Alaskan Natives, or Native Hawaiians needing assistance finding employment or vocational training. Must be a member of a U.S. Federally recognized tribe with a supporting document from a U.S. Federally recognized Tribe’s Tribal Rolls and Records office & reside within our designated service area in TX.

Press Release - The Fannin County Community Ministries (FCCM) has been in existence since 1993 serving the residents of Fannin County. The FCCM is an all-volunteer organization managed by an all-volunteer Board that oversees the operation. It is a nonprofit, 501c3 organization that operates solely on donations from churches, the private sector, and occasional grants. Ninety-eight percent (98%) of all monies donated is used specifically to purchase food; the other two percent (2%) is used for utilities,

office supplies and pest control. In Fannin County, today, 18.1% of the residents do not have enough to eat because of the economy, 25.8% of that number are children. That is in a population of less than 34,000+- residents. Since the pandemic began, FCCM has about 2156 customers which come once a month. The FCCM demographics show 2156 households, 688 children ages 0-18, 932 adults 19-60 years old, and 536 persons 61+ years old. Those are Fannin County residents of that 34,000+-

population that do not have enough to eat on a daily basis. A large number of these residents work, however because of low pay, fall below the poverty line. The FCCM operates 4 days a week 8-12, closed on Tuesday to receive food. It serves all residents of Fannin County regardless of race, color, creed, religion, political beliefs, age or disability. It is unrealistic to think that there are so many food-insecure people and as a society we should not sit by and watch residents in Fannin County go hungry

because of the lack of food. “North Texas Food Bank is proud to support Fannin County Community Ministries mission of closing the hunger gap in Fannin County with this grant,” said Trisha Cunningham, president and CEO of NTFB. “A valued partner agency of the NTFB, Fannin County Community Ministries shares our dedication and passion in providing nourishment and hope for our neighbors experiencing hunger.” When one person dies of malnutrition we have failed our fellow man…..
