Our Bonham Animal Shelter Adoptable Pet of The Week is Tiny (ID# 2019-552). Tiny is an 8 month old female mix. She was surrendered by her owner through no fault of her own. I met this little girl personally and she is a little doll with beautiful markings. She is shy, but does not take long for her to warm up to you. She needs a good, lifetime home that can smother her with love and affection. Her adoption fee is $30. If you are interested in adopting Tiny or any other dog or cat, please visit the Bonham Animal Shelter at 500 Industrial St, Bonham, TX 75418, Monday through Saturday, 8:30-4:00 or call 903640-8245. Photos by Christina Brown and ShareLunker News Release Wylie, Texas, October 29, 2019: The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) made a special delivery today to Bois d’Arc Lake which is currently under construction in Fannin County. TPWD staff stocked ponds in the footprint of the future lake with 2,000 selectively bred bass with the greatest potential to reach trophy size. The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) started constructing Bois d’Arc Lake in 2018 to provide essential water for its growing region of 1.7 million North Texans. It will also offer North Texas a new hub for recreational activities, including fishing. The Toyota ShareLunker Program has been selectively breeding anglerdonated 13-pound and larger bass since 1986. The bass being stocked in ponds of the future Bois d’Arc Lake were selectively bred from a donated 13-pound bass called ShareLunker 581 (see picture), one of nearly 600 entered over the lifetime of the program. As offspring of this particularly large Florida largemouth bass, the Bois d’Arc Lake fingerlings are expected to grow quickly to two- to three-pounds each in only a couple of years, and be capable of spawning themselves by the time the reservoir fills and inundates the stocked ponds. This process will allow the fingerlings to maximize their genetic influence within the future lake’s bass population. From their current home at the TPWD hatchery in Athens, crews used dip nets to move the bass into several hatchery tank trucks for the two-hour journey to Bois d’Arc Lake. Crews checked to make sure the water temperatures of the truck tanks and the ponds were comparable. They then used nets to capture and transfer the six- to nine-inch fingerling bass to their new home. Florida largemouth bass

have been stocked in nursery ponds prior to impounding a reservoir before, as in the case of Lake Fork and Ray Roberts; however, this is the first-time bass produced from the ShareLunker program have been stocked in ponds before a reservoir is impounded. When complete, Bois d’Arc Lake will be the first major reservoir built in Texas during the last 30 years. NTMWD is currently well underway building up

the lake’s two-mile-long dam, and water delivery is scheduled to begin in 2022. Over the next few years as the lake moves toward completion and after the bass population has been established, TPWD will also stock the lake with crappie and catfish. Additional selectively-bred bass will be added once the lake begins to fill. Together these efforts will provide the region with some top-of-the-line fishing. According to Dan Bennett, TPWD Fisheries Biologist for the Denison District, “Bois d’Arc Lake and these bass are expected to generate a significant amount of interest from anglers in coming years.”

From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17 Trusting in God’s Promises

By Bro. Beasley And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 During the 1980’s I had the privilege of working on the mission field in the state of Minnesota on a number of occasions. On one trip I worked a week with the churches in the city of Rochester. The Mayo Clinic was located there and I was given a tour of the facilities. It was an enriching experience. It was not until recently that I came to realize the history behind what I saw. Learning the story of the blessing that can follow a disaster, I saw the fulfillment of Romans 8:28. My thought for this week is “Trusting in God’s Promises.” In the early history of the city of Rochester, a

FM 409 in Fannin County Closed For Repairs Please follow the detour route

PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials announced that FM 409 in Fannin County will be closed for culvert replacement work beginning Oct. 28. This work should be completed in November, weather permitting, but in the meantime travelers are asked to use alternate routes or follow the detour that will be in place. FM 409 intersects FM 2029 about 1.5 miles south of Telephone, Texas, and runs eastward through Caddo National Grassland to FM 100. Highway 19 Construction LLC, Sulphur Springs, Texas, is the contractor for this roadway improvement project valued at more than $112,000. Motorists are also advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems. For more information, contact Tim.McAlavy@txdot.gov or (903) 737-9213.

tornado had struck the prairies of Minnesota killing many people and injuring hundreds of them. The town of Rochester was almost demolished. The Mayo family which consisted of three medical doctors worked for days helping those in need. Their work did not go unnoticed and funds to build the first Mayo Medical facility were given in their honor. This facility would grow into one of the most recognized and prestigious medical institutions today reaching millions in need of healing. It was William Cowper that wrote these lines speaking of God’s promise to bring blessing out of disaster and to overrule bad with a long range of good. God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform He planted His footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm. This is a beautiful promise of Gods overruling activity, and His power to take

disaster and produce good in our lives. One such personal experience I will share, pictures the thought so clearly. At the closing of WWII and my release from prison camp, came the fulfilment of such a promise in my journey– God brought into my path my wife to be. That divinely appointed meeting would be as a result of my prisoner of war days. Taking time to say thank you introduced me to my life partner who would be the one to work by my side for 67 years. A difficult moment in my life was overruled by God and I give God all of the glory and recognize His power to do so. My closing thought this week – Romans 8:28 is a promise of promises. You and I can safely trust in God’s promises.

On December 13 and 14, 2019 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Holidays at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary will bring the beauty of the holiday season into nature. About Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore and preserve our priceless environment. The Heard was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard at the age of 80. In a time when the rate of expansion of the Metroplex was slower than today, she foresaw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. Today, the Heard’s mission of bringing nature and people together is carried out through education, particularly of young people, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation. WE’RE HIRING NOW!

By Christina Brown With all the new construction happening in Bonham and the surrounding areas in Fannin County, everyone is curious as to what is being built when they see land being cleared and then buildings start popping up. The construction at Hwy. 121 and Russell in Bonham is no exception. But fret no longer… I have great news! Bonham will have more options in the near future

of places to eat when going out or carrying dinner home. I spoke with Muhammad Khan, the supervisor of the site located at Hwy. 121 and Russell in Bonham. Mr. Khan stated that the building on the west side of the construction site will be a Captain D’s with the opening date of around for December 15, 2019. The building on the east side will house two restaurants, Williams Chicken and Papa John’s Pizza. The anticipated opening

date for them will be sometime in mid-January 2020. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited to see new food chains coming to Bonham, even if it is fast food. Now the new question, which one to try first?

The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to fellowship and celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the Eight Recovery Principles found in the Beatitudes and Christ-Centered Twelve Steps. These steps guide the recovery of those wanting to leave behind hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Examples include dependency on alcohol or drugs, low self-esteem, depression, anger, abuse, broken relationships, pornography and any other life experiences that affect our peace and joy with God. As we progress through the program we discover our personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power, Jesus Christ. While bridge work is underway the roadway will be reduced to one lane, with signals in place to control traffic, officials said. Texas Deer Hunters Welcome Cooler Weather for Opening Weekend

New mandatory harvest reporting required for antlerless deer harvest AUSTIN – Deer hunters hoping for a change in the weather may be in luck for opening weekend of general deer season as weather forecasters predict cooler temperatures across the state. With an estimated 5.3 million deer in the statewide white-tailed deer population, Texas hunters heading to the field this fall are sure to fill their freezers with this season’s bounty. “Good fawn production this year should help maintain the overall population and provide an abundance of deer for hunters to pursue,” said Alan Cain, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s white-tailed deer program leader. “We’ve seen a slow but steady growth in the statewide population over the last 15 years, particularly in areas such as the Hill Country, Oak Prairies and portions of the Cross Timbers. As a result of the growing population, we’ve expanded hunting season opportunities in the last several years, including a couple of changes to the antlerless season

improve with cooler temperatures, hunters can expect an above average year in terms of antler quality, deer numbers and overall harvest. “Despite a slow start to archery and MLDP (Managed Lands Deer Program) season, I’m hearing of some exceptional bucks being harvested including an incredible 214 gross Boone and Crockett score low-fenced buck from La Salle County,” said Cain. “I’ve talked to a number of hunters and landowners who have been scouting at their lease or hunting property for the upcoming general season and are reporting good antler quality as well. I think hunter excitement is high this season and hunters have lots to look forward to.” The general gun season opener kicks off on Nov. 2 and runs through Jan. 5, 2020 in north Texas and Jan. 19, 2020 in south Texas. A late youth-only season is also slated for Jan. 6-19, 2020. For additional late season deer hunting opportunities and county specific regulations, consult the 2019-2020 Outdoor Annual of hunting and fishing regulations.

in 2019.” For the first time, 21 counties in south-central Texas can partake in a four-day antlerless season that runs from Nov. 28Dec. 1. Any antlerless deer harvested during the archery, youth-only, muzzleloader, and the 4 doedays during the general season is required to be reported to the department within 24 hours of harvest using either the “My Texas Hunt Harvest” mobile app (for iOS and Android) or on TPWD’s My Texas Hunt Harvest web page. Counties required to report their harvest include Austin, Bastrop, Caldwell, Colorado, Dewitt, Fayette, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Waller, Washington and Wilson. Also included in the change are Goliad, Jackson, Victoria and Wharton counties north of U.S. Highway 59 and Comal, Hays and Travis counties east of IH-35. The change in weather may be what is needed to jump start deer movement which has been slow during archery season due to unseasonably warm temperatures. As hunting conditions

So, You Want To Buy A Horse?

By Dr. Katie Hayes, Hayes Equine Veterinary ServicesBuying and selling horses is a major part of the equine industry. However, with buying a horse comes a large amount of risks. It’s not like buying a car where you can usually predict how long a car will last and what will go wrong with it before you buy it. purchaser a better idea of how likely a mare is to be able to conceive and carry a foal. Radiographs are another optional part of a pre-purchase exam. Some buyers may choose to x-ray certain parts of the body that were flagged during the lameness exam. For instance, if a horse flexed positive to the hocks, the buyer may choose to have the hocks radiographed to look for signs of arthritis. Or perhaps the buyer had a bad experience with foot issues, so they choose to have the front feet radiographed. And then some buyers, depending on the horse, want to have everything radiographed. What they are looking for include bone spurs, OCD lesions, cysts, or any other potential issue that may not have shown up by just looking at the horse. Many buyers are concerned about sellers drugging a horse to make the horse look better, or to “pass” a pre-purchase exam. One service now offered through TVMDL is a pre-purchase drug screen. This screen looks for anything like tranquilizers, bute, Banamine, and other performance-enhancing drugs. Whether you’re paying $1000 for the backyard grandkid’s horse, or $100,000 for the Grand Prix jumper, a pre-purchase exam is always a good idea. What I try to remind people of, is that you can bring me ten different horses, and I will find ten different problems. It’s up to you to decide if what I find at that moment is a deal breaker for you. I can’t tell you how many times a client has brought me a horse they just bought only for me to tell them the horse has a significant problem that may have kept them from buying the horse in the first place. A quick $150 pre-purchase exam may save you a lot of money and heartache in the future.

EAST: Rainfall and cooler temperatures prevented producers from getting another cutting of hay. Some pastures had standing water.

Winter pasture planting was in full swing across the district, with some counties already reporting growth. Fall vegetables were in good condition. Livestock were fair

to good. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor to fair. Subsoil and topsoil were adequate. Armyworms were reported. Wild pig problems increased and created major issues across the district. Harrison County reported they received more wild pig calls than ever before. NORTH: Topsoil moisture levels were adequate with some counties reporting short to very short. Some areas received up to 3 inches of rain. Rains were on and off, with lighter soaking rains and some producing runoff. Temperatures cooled with lows in the 40s and highs in the 80s. Winter wheat was planted, and livestock were in good condition. Armyworm and grasshopper damages were minimal so far.

or tendon sheaths, swelling or pain of any of the tendons or ligaments, signs of back pain, or any scars or conformational issues that may contribute to lameness. Lastly is the active lameness exam. This is the most controversial part of the exam, and where the most conflict occurs, especially between the seller and the veterinarian. Equine veterinarians, depending on their area of expertise, spend a lot of time watching horses move. In my case, I’ve dedicated my career to the study of performance issues. I took extra classes in school to learn how to identify lameness, attend yearly continuing education on the subject, and spend much of my time working on different cases. Therefore, I may see a problem where other people may not be able to detect it. Equine veterinarians grade their lamenesses on a scale from 1-5, with 1 being difficult to detect, and 5 being so lame they can’t put any weight on it. Most lay people (including most owners) can detect a lameness at a grade 3, where there is a consistent head “nod” or hip “drop” that is easily observed. I’ve been trained to detect the grade 1 and 2 lamenesses, so when I spot them, I have many sellers that get confused and frustrated because the horse they presumed to be “sound” actually has a small issue. Now whether this observed problem will affect the horse and his ability to perform his duties is between the buyer and the veterinarian. Optional parts of the exam include an exam of the reproductive system (especially in broodmares), radiographs, and drug testing. A reproductive exam would include a palpation and ultrasound of the mare’s uterus and ovaries, a cervical exam, and possibly a uterine culture, cytology, and biopsy. This would give the

be sure that if you make an investment in this animal (and sometimes it’s a BIG investment), that the horse is suited for its purpose and that it will last long enough to continue carrying you throughout its career. So how do we do this? Well one of the things that might give you a little peace of mind when making a decision is to get a Pre-Purchase Exam. The thing to always keep in mind is that a pre-purchase exam is just a glimpse at a moment in time. What I’m seeing on that day may be different the next day, or the next week, or the next month. And any horse could fall and break its leg two days after the prepurchase exam. So really, a pre-purchase is what I’m seeing that day. Another thing to remember is that the BUYER should be the one paying for the exam, and the BUYER is the one who owns the information. The veterinarian is not allowed to share any information with the seller unless expressly given permission by the buyer. And be sure to remember that I never “pass” or “fail” a horse. I will only tell you what I see and what my interpretation is. The decision you have to make is if you want THIS horse or if you want A horse. The first part of my exam is the physical. I listen to the horse’s heart and lungs, take his temperature, look in his mouth, and check his eyes. When I’m evaluating the heart and lungs, I’m listening for crackles or wheezes in the lungs, or arrhythmias in the heart. When I check the eyes, I’m looking for damage to the cornea, cataracts on the lenses, or signs of chronic uveitis. If I note any of these issues, I’ll mark it down on a chart. Next, I perform a passive lameness exam on the horse. Many times, a horse’s body will give you clues to what you may find. I’m looking for extra fluid in any joints and/

By Christina Brown As the Fannin County Courthouse renovation continues one would think that not much is going on by looking from the outside. But work on the inside has started and lots of progress is being made. During the demolition this week a 1927 Memorandum Account Book for the year 1927 was found in the basement level. Temporary lighting has been installed, as well as a staircase on the west side of the courthouse which allows safe access to all three floors. Plaster and concrete continues to be chipped away

Despite late start Leonard’s Davis amongst Centenary’s top spikers By Rich Hilliard Even a foot injury to start the season -- which required a three-day hospitalization and being out of action for three weeks -- could not keep Leonard alumna Alyssa Davis from a successful second volleyball season for Centenary College of Louisiana. Through play on Oct. 27, Davis, a sophomore outside hitter, had 255 kills, making her a part of a three-way tie for second in the statistical category amongst the Centenary squad -- despite having played in only 23 matches which have included 85 sets. She will finish as one of Centenary’s leading hitters despite missing the first 11 matches. “Once I got back, I practiced one day before I played in four conference games that weekend,” said Davis, whose absence included missing a conference match. A home contest on Nov. 1 against the University of Texas at Dallas concluded the 2019 season for Centenary which finished one spot out of qualifying for the annual Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. In high school, Davis helped Leonard qualify for threeconsecutive postseason volleyball trips her final three years -- the first in school history in the sport -- and was a State-qualifier in back-to-back spring seasons in girls doubles tennis as an upperclassman. Fannin County schools report mostly larger ADMs on Snapshot Day 2019

By Rich Hilliard

Oct. 25 marked the first of three parts of the biennial realignment by the University Interscholastic League: snapshot day. Schools across Texas each submitted an Average Daily Membership (ADM) for its high schools -- to be utilized to determine classifications and districts for athletic competition for the next two school years. Most of Fannin County reported higher high school ADMs than in 2017. Class 3A Bonham reported a 499 -- an increase of 11. Under the current 3A parameters -- 225-504 -

the number would extend Bonham’s stay in 3A -- into which it dropped for the current alignment. It would also keep Bonham in 3A-I for football which includes ADMs of 335504. However, the parameters for each classification change for each biennial realignment. Parameters for the 202022 realignment will likely be announced early in December. New alignments will follow on Feb. 3, 2020. Meanwhile, Leonard will remain in 3A overall and 3A-II for football after submitting a 250 -- a decrease of 41. Additionally, Fannin’s 2A trio of schools each reported

larger ADMs: Trenton 207 (+42), Honey Grove 213 (+19) and Sam Rayburn 151 (+22). Current 2A parameters are 105-224 overall. Schools with 161.5-224 play in Division I for football and 105-161.4 in Division II. Class 1A schools in the county also submitted larger ADMs: Dodd City 102.5 (+11.5), Ector 90 (+13), Savoy 87 (+12) Current 1A parameters include 104.9 or less overall, with 55.5-104.9 for Division I and 55.4 or less for Division II for football-playing schools. Note: The ADM submitted by Fannindel will be reported in a future story.

“Something clicked:” Pre-district meet foreshadows HG’s Uribe’s State XC advance coach Lance Smith. “He had a breakthrough meet before district at Blue Ridge,” said Smith, noting Uribe’s 18:05 effort at the nondistrict event. “I knew at that point that he could repeat it,” said the coach, “and I could see him qualifying and turning in an 18:05 [at regionals]. “Something clicked.” Uribe proved Smith correct: Honey Grove’s Aaron Uribe. “I’m just nervous,” said Uribe a day after qualifying. “It was in my mind this year to just keep practicing to make State.” Uribe will compete on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 10:10 a.m. in the 2A boys race at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock. “My goal at State,” said Uribe, “is to beat my time at regionals.” It marks the first State advance for Uribe, who finished fourth amongst his teammates and 59th in 19:47 at the same regional competition last year -- his first cross country season for Honey Grove. “We were all motivated last year and that proceeded into this season,” said Smith. “Aaron accepted that as big as anybody and it showed.”
