Cindy and Lanny Joe Burnett at Kiwanis

Lanny Joe and Cindy Burnett. Story and photo by Mary-k Ashley Wilson Humorist Cindy Burnett and her husband Cowboy Poet Lanny Joe Burnett were guest speakers at Kiwanis Club of Bonham, Texas. Cindy spoke about the humor in making Halloween costumes. Lanny Joe told the history of the Sons of the Pioneers, originally with Leonard Franklin Slye, better known to us as Roy Rogers.

Always end your day with a positive thought and a grateful heart. ♥

The Club welcomed new member Randy Kraft. Kiwanian Sandy Robertson donated soap dispensers and sanitizers to Bonham Trade Days. These are very much appreciated. Kiwanis is preparing for their November 9-12, 2023, BONHAM TRADE DAYS. Sunshine is predicted for those days with temperatures of mid-50s to low 60s. It should be a great time to begin your Christmas shopping and maybe even pick up something for Thanksgiving. The Kiwanis Club thanks all the vendors and shoppers. It is from this event that Kiwanis earns their money to donate to worthy youth groups in Bonham and Fannin County.

Be Better Than Jaden: DC's Mahar hopes his successors more than match his XC success 3/28/23

By Rich Hilliard

DODD CITY -- When playing basketball, Jaden Mahar can seemingly walk on air. After airborne catches of long downcourt passes, the Dodd City senior then glides the rest of the way to the basket. While still elevated, he outmaneuvers opponents en route to scoring -- pump faking with the ball and adjusting his shot as needed. Mahar has now also uplifted what it means to be the best in boys' cross country at the Class 1A school. On Oct. 23, he became the first boy from Dodd City to qualify twice for the State competition in the sport. He advanced individually for the second-straight year, finishing ninth amongst 139 runners in 17:51.8 at the Region III-1A boys' meet at

been exciting and nerve racking." With his second advance, he joins the other multiple State cross country trip qualifier from Dodd City -- former Lady Hornet Lindsey Mauppin who made four trips (2019-22). "I think I have set a standard [on the boys' side]," said Mahar, when asked. "I have brothers in junior high and elementary school," he said. "I want them to be better than me. "Not just be like Jaden, but -be better than Jaden." He had one more chance to make being like -- or outdoing -- him mean something additionally for his successors, running in the 1A State boys' race on Nov. 3 at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock. "He's driven. I think last year he was just happy to make

Holidays at the Heard: A Family-Friendly, Festive Experience in the Heart of Nature

McKinney, Texas - The holiday season is right around the corner. What better way is there to celebrate with your family than by immersing yourself in the serenity of nature? Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is pleased to offer "Holidays at the Heard," presented by Plano Tree Care, a fun and festive family event on December 8 and 9, 2023, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. In keeping with the Heard's role as a nature preserve, the light display will thoughtfully complement the sanctuary's natural beauty. As the sun sets and the stars emerge, holiday lights and enchanting décor will accent a serene half-mile nature trail

at the Heard. This nighttime journey through the woods will captivate your family and create cherished memories. Along the trail, you'll even glimpse the Dinosaurs Live! exhibit, though the dinosaurs will remain still during the event. Underneath the starlit sky, live festive music will delight audiences at the Heard's outdoor amphitheater, providing the perfect backdrop to your family's holiday experience. But "Holidays at the Heard" is more than just a celebration— it's a fundraiser. Your participation supports the Heard's mission of connecting people with nature, enabling discovery, appreciation, and conservation. Tickets are available now at

BONHAM,TX – The transition from hot summer nights to cozy fall days is here. Atmos Energy remains focused on year-round preparations for the winter heating season. We also have tips to help you stay safe and conserve energy so you can be ready for winter too. All year round, from gas supply to delivery of natural gas service at the meter, Atmos Energy is preparing for winter weather. As your household also prepares for winter, using energy wisely and making a few household changes can make a big difference in how much you spend on natural gas and other energy bills. Atmos Energy offers rebates for highefficiency natural gas appliances, energy-saving devices, and weatherization upgrades for customers in Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, and parts of Texas – visit www. atmosenergy.com/rebates for details. Remember that colder weath-

er may impact the amount of natural gas you use. To save energy and money, please consider these energy-saving tips where safe to do so: ● Lower your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 58 degrees when you are away from home. ● Reduce your shower and bath time. Showering and bathing can account for 40 percent of your home's hot water use. ● Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees. Water heating accounts for as much as 25 percent of the energy consumed in your home. ● Do not use a pool heater. Instead, run your pool pump during the coldest part of the day to circulate the water and prevent freezing. ● Operate your clothes washer, dryer, and dishwasher only when fully loaded. ● Unless a fire is burning, close your fireplace damper to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney.

If your natural gas service lapsed for any reason and you need to reconnect service, contact Atmos Energy now to schedule an appointment – before cold weather sets in. The Atmos Energy customer service team is available at 888.286.6700, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central time – or visit the Account Center anytime at www.atmosenergy.com. Recent rainfall could lead to increase in armyworms

5/30/23

By Emmy Powell Communications Specialist Texas Farm Bureau Recent rains and cooler temperatures have been a welcome relief across the state, but they’ve also brought an unwanted pest—armyworms. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts encourage farmers and ranchers to scout their fields frequently to prevent widespread damage. Areas receiving rain will see grass growth that could fuel armyworm populations. If producers aren’t proactive in treating fields, armyworms can cause significant damage to pastures and rangeland, which is problematic for cattle

operations dealing with short hay and forage supplies due to drought. “Armyworms can be picky eaters,” Dr. Vanessa OlsonCorriher, AgriLife Extension forage specialist, said. “These insects are going to select wellfertilized or irrigated forages to feed on.” Winter wheat, annual ryegrass and other small grains have been found to be at higher risk of armyworm infestations. Home Country: Slim Randles

Old Jasper Blankenship went out to hunt deer the other day, the same way he’s done for decades now. He’s slower than he used to be, of course. Deer season has changed a lot for Jasper over the many years he’s been at it. As a kid, he couldn’t wait until he was old enough to get a license, because he wanted to bring a buck home to show his family. Not just any buck, either, but a big one.

As a young man, he wanted to see how many hunting seasons he could have in one year: duck, goose, quail, pheasant, deer, about anything that moved. As a middle-aged man, he turned to the technology of hunting and wanted to learn about the newest gizmo that would make you quiet, make you invisible, make you irresistible to deer. But things are different these days. Oh, Jasper still enjoys going through all the outdoor magazines and orders catalogs, and each year he orders some new gizmo that guarantees to bring home the meat. But he just chuckles at them, even as he orders them. Hunting, to him, means a reat-

tachment to nature, a return to his roots. It is a time to see if his personal skills are still adequate. It is also a time to sit on a ridge and look around and appreciate what is there. And if what isn’t there happens to be a deer, well, that’s all right, too. Venison isn’t getting any easier to pack back to camp after all these many seasons, either. But there is something in the hunt, something in being allowed to silently stalk the nameless essence of fall, something in moving in near invisibility. There is something. Sometimes it’s just nice to go out there and see what happens.

H. Dean Staton Airman 1st Class

My Uncle told me a story about when he attended the wake of a dear friend of his since childhood. Patiently waiting in line to pay respect, he noted that someone had placed a $20.00 dollar bill between his friend’s hands. He stepped out of line went over and sat down and pulled out his check book. He returned to the line and as he stood over his friend he pulled out the $20.00 bill and replaced it with a $20.00 check. Hmmmm…..do they have banks in “heaven”? Sounds like another farfetched Texan story to me. Since the passing of his friend he placed a quarter on the headstone every time he visited his friend’s grave……..until he too passed away. The modern practice of leav-

ing coins behind began with Vietnam veterans. It was a way for fellow service members to honor those who died in service, and to subtly let the deceased soldier’s family know that someone cared enough to visit the grave. According to an article by the Department of Military Affairs, the custom of leaving coins with the deceased can be traced back to the Roman Empire. Coins were placed into the mouth of fallen soldiers to pay for passage and protection across the River Styx, which separates the world of the living from the world of the dead. Have you ever notice a penny on a veteran’s headstone? This signifies that someone visited the headstone. It's an act of gratitude for a person's service to their country. However, anyone can leave a penny, whether they are a family member, friend or fellow service person. Should there be a nickel on the head stone, this means that the visitor went to boot camp with

the person deceased. If you see a dime on their headstone, means that the visitor served on active duty with the deceased. Seeing a quarter has a particularly heavy association. This signifies that the visitor was present when the military person passed away. When passing by the headstone leave a penny or two to let the family of the deceased veteran know that someone really does cares about our those veterans who served their county………the “few and the brave”. Who are and were these unselfish men and women who took a solemn oath to “protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States? Now that you understand what each coin means when you see it, you'll have a better idea of what it means when you see this emotional item left behind at a gravestone. And more importantly, you'll know the proper way to leave a coin.

Veterans Day 2023

THREE TIMES A YEAR America honors Its Military. 1. Armed Forces Day - In May. A Day to honor men and women in the service. 2. Mermorial Day - Last Monday May to honor Veterans who have died. 3. November 11 - A day to remember both living and dead Veterans. Veterans Day is a day set aside to remember every man and woman who have taken up arms to defend our country. We honor every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine and Caostguardsmen who have given the best years of their life in the service of the United States Military and those who stand ready to give life itself to protect our freedom. Over 25 Million Veterans walk among us and today we remember them.

Our Veterans come from several generations and backgrounds. These Veterans remember WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Bosnia, Persian Gulf, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet all served in the tradition of the Military. Today we also remember the men and women who did not live to be called “Veterans.” They rest in fields of honor around the world. We old Veterans who served with them remember their names and faces. We have grown old, we remember them in their youth. The families of these Veterans carry a burden of grief that time will lighten but never lift. Our nation owes a debt of gratude to those who place duty and country before their own lives. Our Veterans have born the cost of America’s wars and

have paid with their lives the cost of America’s Freedom and today stand watch over America’s Peace. What Veterans have given our country is beyond our power to fully repay. Therefore today we recognize our debt to their honor, and on this special day our hearts are filled with respect and gratitude for the sacriface Veterans have made in defense of our country. Wounded Heros Red River Alliance

OUR MISSION The mission of “Wounded Heroes Red River Alliance” is to honor, empower, and to express our gratitude to our wounded soldiers and their families. OUR PURPOSE To raise public awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women provide aid and assistance to each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

Alvin Hartwell, President of Wounded Heroes Red River Alliance, and board members, are working to put together programs that will help promote injured vets and their families in the Red River area. The goal is to “meet the spiritual and physical needs “of wounded veterans and allow them to experience the opportunities and normal activities in civilian lifestyle. These events can include going out for the day, fishing, hunting, or just sitting

outside and enjoying the outdoors. Due to the generosity of many in the community, the organization has been able to line up places that can accommodate these types of outings, and in some cases can be used by his or her family for the weekend. Another goal of the organization is to be able to pay for expenses associated with special types of outings for wounded vets and to have the ability to pay for critical family expenses of a wounded vet, if needed. In the

organizations eyes the “family is just as much injured at the vet” and we also need to look after them. Currently, the group works with the Bonham VA Hospital. We are a nonprofit organizationall proceeds go to help wounded veterans. Please feel free to contact Our Organization with any questions that you may have. Please donate today, 100% of your donations go directly to the activity or effort that you specify.

Change the Messages puppy to mouth your hands, allowing your dog to climb 10/4/22 and Max Will Change into your lap [without an inviBy Gregg Flowers The expression "You can't teach an old dog new tricks", doesn't apply to dogs at all. It refers to the human condition. Your older dog can change alright, but it will be a substantial challenge, because he has X number of years receiving the wrong messages regarding his place in the pack. The task is to change those messages and re-claim your rightful position at the top of the pack order. There are many things we do that give our dog the 'message' about our rank. Classic unhealthy messages are: Allowing a

tation], allowing him to put a paw on you, jump on you, lean on you, or stand on your foot. Also, not making a dog move when he's under foot. If he precedes you out the door, or leads you on the leash, in (begin ital>his<end ital) head, he outranks you. This is simply the language he understands. Unlike a child (or worse, a teenager), when you abruptly change the rules on a dog, he

won't analyze, debate, argue, justify or use emotional blackmail. He will [ultimately] cosign the change if you stick to your guns. The potential complication here has to do with his level of dominance/ pushyness and your level of resolve. If you change some rules, and remain resolute no matter what, he'll change. So from now on, don't let Max put a paw (or a tooth) on you for any reason, or lean on you, or step/stand on your foot, or go out the door first. Don't walk around him either. Make him move out of your way. - Most importantly, learn to walk him properly on the leash. In other words, NOT leading you, as this is the very most powerful message about your rank - and his.

LUFKIN, Texas, October 30– Gun deer hunting season begins soon across the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas. Hunters and visitors are reminded to review the guidelines designed to make their hunting trips and visits to the national forest safe and enjoyable while sustaining the health of the forests. “Hunting season is one of the busiest times in the forest, and safety is always a primary concern,” said Forest Supervisor Kimpton Cooper. “We want visitors to enjoy the outdoors this fall, but remember to check your surroundings

and be aware of the possibility of falling limbs or trees.” Here are some other precautions: -- During hunting season, camping in the Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, Sam Houston, and Caddo National Grasslands is limited to designated campsites or developed recreation areas until one week after the end of Muzzleloader Season on January 21, 2024. -- Much of the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas are remote, and medical assistance may not be readily available. lands in Texas include the Alabama Creek WMA in the Davy Crockett National Forest, the Bannister WMA in the Angelina National Forest, the Caddo WMA in the Caddo National Grassland, and the Moore Plantation WMA in the Sabine National Forest. In addition, the entire Sam Houston National Forest is a wildlife management area. --Mandatory deer check stations will be located at each WMA. Sam Houston and Alabama Creek WMA area the first two Saturdays during general gun season. Bannister and Moore Plantation WMA the first Saturday of the season. Caddo National Grasslands reporting is by phone. Any deer harvested while hunting in the WMA areas is required to be checked for it to be a legal harvest. Refer to the Public Hunting Lands Map Booklet for deer check station locations. -- Portable deer stands in national forests are limited to 72 hours and must be removed from the national forest. In addition, the stands must not be nailed to trees to prevent damage to trees. When hunters fail to remove their deer stands, it damages forest land and creates an expensive, time-consuming cleanup. -- Vehicles should not be parked near gates or areas that impede traffic and block roads. All gates must be accessible. --We encourage other visitors to wear hunter orange for increased visibility while recreating on the NFGT during hunting season. -- Residents near hunting areas may encounter increased activity and hear gunshots during the season. -- According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Official Hunting Guide and the Public Hunting Lands Booklet, regulations vary in different locations. Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Crappie are good in the creeks and near shores. Catfish are great on cut shad around the banks and in timber. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 68 degrees; 1.93 feet below pool. Fork has come up close to a foot with recent front and rains. The Texas rig bite is working good in 2-5 feet in front of weeds or grass with crawfish type baits. Square bills are fair in 2-5 feet of water in bream or crawfish patterns. Viper XP Jigs are good on big wood from 3-7 feet on ditches and drains and old road beds. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.56 feet below pool. White bass are biting chartreuse 1 ounce lead slabs with a crappie jig 1/16 ounce tied on a looped knot 2 feet above your slab, or paddle tail swimbait. Look for white bass shallow first in 3-5 feet along the banks wherever birds are. then move out to main lake points 10-20 feet and use slabs. You can find these tasty little bluegill in almost every single brush pile on the entire lake. Especially if it is in an average depth of 15-25 feet with earthworms on a small hook 2-4 pound line. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water normal stain; 65 degrees; 1.33 feet below pool. Water clarity is good after the recent rain. Sand bass are good with many limits caught off the bottom in 2-35 feet of water with slabs with a hair jig as trailer. 2-5 pound blue catfish are mixed. Seeing more keepers. Bass are slow with a few in shallow water around grass beds with small spinnerbaits, or a Carolina rig in deeper water. Crappie are slow with a few keepers in 35-40 feet of water on the deepest parts of the brush piles with minnows. A few reports of crappie shallow in foot of water in the creek. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 80 degrees; 0.37 feet below pool. The fall feed is showing up in full force this week. With the recent rain, the lake has come up a foot and we are currently 3 inches low. Stripers, hybrid stripers and white bass are solid feeding on schools of shad throughout the entire lake. We are finding fish in 3-50 feet with slabs or swimbaits working best. The trophy catfish bite has kicked off and we are seeing several fish up to 50 pounds being caught on fresh shad in the mid depths of 15-25 feet. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 2.87 feet below pool. Striper fishing is great using topwaters early along rocky banks for bigger fish. Catching numbers on live bait in 30-40 feet of water along main lake ledges and humps near flats. Keep an eye out for gulls working active schools of fish randomly all over the lake. Swim baits and live bait below the birds. Catfish are good on cut shad and prepared baits. Drifting 40-50 feet of water along flats for big blues and seeing smaller fish on ledges in 20-30 feet of water. Crappie are fair fishing boat houses using minnows and small shad. Jigs are inconsistent but starting to see active fish on electronics in 8-12 feet of water. Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing is slow using live shad along the south end of the lake targeting large boulders. Swimbaits are landing smaller sized catches in the rocky coves.

Brotherly Love

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Christians are bound together in Christ as a family. Jesus said that “whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister” (Matthew 12:50). Because of this close family, the Lord said, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Our love for brothers and sister in Christ is what helps the world to recognize who we are. Jesus explains, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). The love we have for one another

can’t be fake or hypocritical, it must be real. Paul wrote, “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good” (Romans 12:9). God has always desired that His people would love one another. After the first and great commandment “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37-38), we find the second on how to treat each other, “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 22:39). John records that “this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also” (1 John 4:21). When we love one another

blessings. Paul is reminding the Ephesian church, as we need to be reminded as well, that a complete understanding of our Lord, Jesus Christ, leads to a greater love and a stronger faith. Both salvation, and eternal life through Jesus Christ, are very tremendous gifts, and we should never take them for granted. In 1895, Clara H. Scott (18411897) penned the words to this classic hymn. “Open my eyes that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me.

properly, we find ways to encourage our brethren by being a good example. The principle is Biblical, “He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him” (1 John 2:10). When we obey the gospel, the death, burial, and resurrection, of Christ, (1 Corinthians 15:1-4), (Romans 6:1-4), we determine to do those things that are right. Peter records the importance of obedience and love, “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently” (1 Peter 1:22).

Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!” If you’re in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. One of the things that Christians can mostly agree to disagree upon is the subject of dating. Perhaps this is because that word “dating” is not even used in the Bible, yet the idea of relationships between men and women are laced throughout God’s Word. For the purposes of this article let’s define dating as “when there is a relationship between one man and one woman which goes beyond friendship and continues into marriage; dating would be the time they spend with one another”. Choose Someone Who Walks With the Lord... 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 1 Peter 4:8 Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Sunday Morning Re-take “Our Salvation is Our Most Valuable Possession”

Hello everyone! This week I am focusing on Ephesians 1:15-23. This passage concerns the value of our salvation through Jesus Christ. As I have mentioned before, accepting the gift of salvation is the best decision you will ever make in your life. In this passage, the apostle Paul is not only giving praise to the church in Ephesus for their success, but he is also making an appeal for their growth. We, as believers, are not just followers of Jesus Christ, but we also receive his

OBITUARIES It broke my heart to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. Part of me went with you, the day God took you home.

CARROLE LOUISE THOMPSON

Carrole Louise Thompson, age 80, peacefully ascended to her heavenly home surrounded by her loving family, at her residence, on October 27, 2023 after a 4 year debilitating battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Carrole was born on January 21, 1943 in Honey Grove, Texas to parents Pate Louis and Thelma Louise Powell. She moved with her family from Honey Grove to Sherman, Texas at the age of 12. Carrole married Marvin (Lou) Thompson on September 19,1959 in Sherman where they had and raised their two children Donna and David. Carrole was proud to be a full-time homemaker and loving mother. She was a kind, compassionate woman with a strong faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She enjoyed walking at the Midway Mall for exercise and making many friends with other mall walkers. This was her daily routine for 20 years before Parkinson’s took away her ability to drive and continue this daily

activity she loved so much. Carrole, along with her children became faithful members of Central Baptist Church in 1971, which later was renamed Grayson Bible Church. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior on 8/1/1971 and was Baptized on 8/18/1971. Carrole was blessed with a variety of talents. She was an excellent self-taught seamstress. She sewed clothing not only for herself, but for family and friends. This became a walking advertisement by the ones that wore her home-made clothing. By word of mouth only she was contacted by friends of friends and strangers who wanted her to make clothing for them. Some of her larger accomplishments were bridesmaid dresses in a wedding party and team cheerleading uniforms. When not sewing she was busy cooking and baking up homemade treats and meals for the family. She especially enjoyed making holiday candy, cookies and goodies for the Christmas season. Everyone had their favorite item and she would make sure it was available for the family gathering. Carrole had a green thumb for plants and gardening. She could plant a rock and it would sprout roots. If a plant was near the point of no return, she could bring it back to life. Carrole particularly enjoyed cross stitching which can be found framed and displayed on the walls throughout her home. She also embarked on wood working projects for outdoor and flowerbed adornments. If she saw it she could make it without a pattern or she would make her own pattern. Later, after their children were grown, she enjoyed short weekend trips with her husband, Lou, and long time, special friends, Frank and Dorothy Connor. Carrole was preceded in death by her parents Pate and Thelma Powell. Step mother Ria Powell. Brothers Jimmy Dan and Wayne Powell. Carrole is survived by her loving husband Lou Thompson. Daughter, Donna and husband Bryan Ward. Son David Thompson with Susan Rowland. Sisters Judy and husband Alan Bell, Mona Busby, Edna and husband Clay Coppedge. Grandchildren Apryelle and husband Joshua Aguirre, Malachi LeFlore, Kyle Thompson and Keeshia and husband Jonatan Miles. Serving as pallbearers; Malachi LeFlore, Joshua Aguirre, Kyle Thompson, Steve Thompson, Michael Thompson, Randy Thompson. Family visitation was held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Waldo Funeral Home, 619 N Travis Street Sherman, Texas. Funeral services were on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Waldo Funeral Home graveside services followed at West Hill Cemetery. Dr Eddy Johnson officiated the services. May God bless the providers, Lexie, Jennifer, Sunny, Shari and Liz at Birdie Palliative Care & Hospice for their prompt service, compassion, comfort and guidance for the family to ensure the last month of our precious mother’s life was as peaceful as possible. Respiratory virus and Strangles Hayes Equine November Newsletter Quarantine, Isolation and Disinfection Respiratory virus and Strangles cases are on the rise. This can be due to the adoption of rescue horses, bringing in a new horse, weather extremes (cold nights/hot days), congregation of horses during competitions or trail rides, commercial horse van transport, and your horse returning home from the trainer. In any of these situations, the best policy is to isolate the horse from your other horses for 2-4 weeks so the disease that the horse may be shedding does not go through your other horses. Isolation means no nose-to-nose contact with another horse over the fence, thru the cracks of boards between stalls, next to or across the aisle from the new arrival. Separation in a separate barn or paddock is best. These are the most common respiratory diseases: Disease: Incubation period Duration of shedding EHV: (herpes/Rhino) 4-6 days 7-10 days up to 3 weeks Strangles: 3-14 days 2-4 weeks or longer Flu: 1-3 days 7-10 days Incubation period is the time from exposure to the time of clinical signs (fever). Just as with Covid, when there is fever, virus is being shed and the horse is contagious. After the fever breaks, the horse is still contagious for days. The signs of common respiratory diseases are the same. The horse may have fever more than 101.5, snotty nose, cough, not eating, depressed, and with

strangles swollen and ruptured lymph nodes. We have a nasal swab test that we take when the horse has fever and send off to the lab which identifies which respiratory disease it is. Disinfectants are used to kill the virus or strangles bacteria. Liquid Lysol is the best for disinfection of stalls because it is not inactivated by organic material (dirt, manure). Povidone Iodine (Betadine) is the best for buckets or plastic feeders because it is nontoxic and is not inactivated by organic material. Bleach is nontoxic but is inactivated by organic material so it can only be used in cleaned water buckets and

feed tubs. Wearing gloves or hand washing after contact with the sick horse is important so you don’t transmit the disease. Soap, antiseptic soap, betadine, alcohol wipes are effective. Strangles Study A study of Strangles bacteria survival on surfaces was done. On outdoor surfaces (wood fence, painted fence, rubber and metal feed trough) the strangles bacteria lived 1-3 days depending on the amount of sunlight. It lived 24 hours in direct sunlight all day, and longer if cloudy. On indoor surfaces (stall, rubber sole of a shoe, cotton overalls, plastic
