James Manis had as the guest speakers Leslie Bowser and Lauren Lyles, BISD Dyslexia Therapists. Dyslexia is described in the Oxford Languages dictionary as “a general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that does not affect intelligence.” Among the famous people who were dyslectic: Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Pablo Picasso, Winston Churchill, John Lennon, and a host of others. As stated above, intelligence is not affected by dyslexia. Lyles told the group about the BISD Dyslexia program. One out of five people have dyslexia. They use a program from Scottish Rite Hospital. This program teaches the dys-

lectic child to read whereas a regular reading program is not aimed at dyslectic children. It is not that the dyslectic children are not smart, just that they did not learn to read the normal way. While dyslectic children cannot read, their comprehension is exceedingly high. If you suspect that your child may have dyslexia, contact Ms. Bowser or Ms. Lyles to see where you child might be evaluated. Bonham Trade Days will be Thursday through Sunday, November 10 through 13 at Fort Inglish Park. There are vendor spots still open. For all questions regarding Trade Days, please call 903-583-9634 and 903-271-8631. Kiwanis hopes everyone will come out to shop before Christmas. Kiwanis appreciates all of the support at Bonham Trade Days.

Great event at Fannin County Family Crisis Center

On Saturday night, October 22nd, the Fannin County Family Crisis Center hosted its first annual EMPTY BOWLS event. It was a great evening. The food was wonderful, thanks to the many restaurants and individuals who contributed. Plus everyone got to take home a handmade ceramic bowl painted by some of the local artists as well as amateur artists, like me. Thanks to the generosity of Bridget Self and Debbie Hutcherson of the Muddy Wine Glass Pottery and Cork and Daisy Pottery in Trenton who provided and fired the bowls, there were plenty for everyone to choose from, with some left over. I am writing this to tell you about a group of wonderful

young ladies and gentlemen who currently attend our local Bonham High School. Our event was a Saturday night affair but even so, at least a dozen of them from the BHS Student Council together with their Sponsor Brandi Holcomb enhanced the evening. They, along with their sponsor deserve our utmost gratitude. The Council Members and Brandi were all wearing very professional looking, as well as beautiful, purple jackets and a smile. They were generous enough to spend their night with us serving soup, pizza, bar-b-que, sandwiches, etc. to all who attended. I wish I had all of their names but I was caught up in the moment and failed to do that:

and I hope they will accept my apology. I am sure all of the Board Members and, especially the Staff who have worked so hard to put this together, will agree with me. I hope there will be another function where I shall have the privilege of working with this group of wonderful young people. As far as I am concerned, you are all definitely “KEEPERS” Not only was it a successful and fun evening, but without these great kids, their sponsor and of course all those lovely purple (my favorite color) jackets, the evening wouldn’t have been quite so complete. To Our Readers! 9/6/22

You have likely noticed a change in our delivery process. We are now mailing to all residents instead of throwing home deliveries in Bonham, Honey Grove and Ladonia. This major change for us is an attempt to clean up the streets and yards when papers are not picked up by residents, we believe this will create a cleaner environment. This change will also help those who are unable to get their paper from the yard or driveway. We appreciate you, our readers. We Thank our advertisers who make it possible for Fannin County to receive a FREE local newspaper. If you do not receive The Leader, please call your local Post Office.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, dinner would not be complete without the turkey gravy! Years ago I used to be extremely intimidated of making the gravy because for whatever reason, it seemed complicated to make. I’m here to tell you the Perfect Turkey Gravy is one of the easiest recipes you’ll make for Thanksgiving dinner! You can make the gravy with or without your turkey drippings. If you are not using the drippings, you’ll need chicken or turkey stock from the grocery store. Make sure you are using a quality stock because it will directly

impact the flavor. PERFECT TURKEY GRAVY ½ c. butter, cut into about 8 pieces 1 tsp. coarse black pepper ½ c. all-purpose flour 4 c. pan drippings or 4 c. chicken stock Salt to taste if needed If using drippings from a chicken or turkey: Pour drippings into a fine mesh strainer then allow the drippings to cool a bit so that the fat rises to the top and starts to solidify. Use a spoon to remove the fat.

If you don’t have enough drippings to equal 4 cups, add enough chicken or turkey stock. In a large saucepan, melt ½ c. butter over medium-low heat. Sprinkle in 1 tsp. coarse black pepper. Slowly add in ½ c. flour, constantly whisking to combine. After a few minutes, the flour will be well incorporated into the butter. Slowly begin to pour in drippings and broth into the pan, constantly whisking. Allow the gravy to cook for several minutes, so that it can thicken up. Serve immediately, or keep on very low heat until you’re ready to serve. Optional: My husband always wants some giblets and a hard boiled egg in our Thanksgiving gravy. Everyone has their own traditions and that is always a good thing! ENJOY!! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclweesie@gmail.com

ATHENS – The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is excited to announce the second annual “Veterans Day at the TFFC” event to honor and support veterans. The event is scheduled for Nov. 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with free admission for veterans and their families. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Fisheries Technician and former Marine Nicholas Griffin organized the event and launched this tradition in 2021 to connect with veterans and give them a way to enjoy the outdoors. “The mission of the event is simple- get veterans outdoors,” said Griffin. “It can be tough for veterans transitioning back into civilian life. For me personally, no matter what was going on in my life and all the hustle and bustle we encounter, being outdoors always put me at ease. There are some great organizations out there that are dedicated to helping make this happen and we have invited them out to the TFFC to get as many veterans in the outdoors as we can.” The Fallen Outdoors, Cover 6 Outdoors, Headwaters for Heroes, Project Healing Waters and Patriot Anglers are just some of the organizations with that same mission. This event will allow visitors to find out more information about these organizations,

what they have to offer, and donate to support their efforts to get more veterans outdoors. Additionally, there will be guided fishing trip giveaways for veterans and Pond King Inc. will conduct its "Patriots 4 Patriots" drawing for its Patriot Two-Man Pontoon Boat. Visitors will also have a chance to win other prizes, and merchandise will be available for purchase to further benefit veterans. Attendees can also take advantage of fly casting and fly-tying instruction, which is a new addition to this year’s event. Anglers and their families will have the opportunity to visit with top professional anglers from Major League Fishing. Anglers Gary Klein, Alton Jones, Sr., Jeff Sprague and Kelly Jordon will be on site signing autographs and visiting with attendees. “It’s so special to me to get to spend time with our nation’s veterans and their families on Veteran’s Day,” said Jordon. “I get to fish for a living thanks to their service and it’s my privilege to get to spend time with them and their families and talk about fishing at the Fisheries Center.” Located in Athens, TFFC includes a working fish hatchery, a visitor center with 300,000 gallons of aquaria focusing on underwater wildlife in the

state, recreational fishing ponds and fisheries science exhibits. It is home to the Toyota ShareLunker program, which invites anglers to donate 13-poundplus-sized largemouth bass for research and breeding purposes. TFFC also houses the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, which honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to freshwater fishing in Texas. The Texas Game Warden Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the organization and current TPWD game warden operations, is also located at the TFFC. In addition, TFFC facilitates the annual Fish Art Contest in Texas, which is part of a conservation education program designed to spark the imaginations of students while providing valuable lessons about fish and the importance of conserving Texas’ aquatic resources. “We are grateful for the service of our nation’s veterans and thankful that we, along with Mr. Klein, Mr. Jordon, Mr. Sprague, and Mr. Jones, Sr. are able to spend the day sharing all that TFFC has to offer with them and their families,” said Tom Lang, TFFC Director. The center currently operates from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Tomb of the Unknown Solidier………….. By Larry C. Waldrop

Dr Gates and staff will provide complimentary fillings, cleanings & extractions to all veterans with valid DD214 on a first come, first served basis. VERERANS DAY……. take time out of your busy schedule to stop for a moment of silence and pay homage to our brave American men and women who served our county honorably with unselfish courage. To those who never returned home, for those who lay at rest atop a hill or along country side cemeteries on foreign soil……and for those who lay in unmarked graves who may never be recovered……..we salute you……….we thank you…….may you rest in peace. Perhaps the most chilling symbol of sacrifice is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Within this Tomb are the unidentifiable remains of a soldier who gave up his life so we may enjoy the fruits of freedom ……….a freedom that is all too often taken for granted. To honor the unidentified remains of men and women from World War I, World War II and from the Korean War……… servicemen lay in a crypt facing east of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In 1984 unidentified remains of

a Vietnam serviceman was placed in a crypt alongside the others……in 1998 DNA tests identified the remains…… the remains were disinterred and honorably returned to his beloved family. The crypt of the Unknown Vietnam Service person has remained empty to this date. The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in any and all weather. The Guards are all volunteers of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) stationed at Fort Myers, Virginia. We have all witnessed the regimented discipline the guards perform in guarding the tomb…..but do we know the message they send. The guard does not execute an about-face as we may know it. The Sentinel (guard) walks 21 steps across and past the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers…..with a snap turn, the guard turns 90 degrees to face the east and stands for 21 seconds……….another sharp turn to the north standing for 21 seconds and then proceeds north. The guard places his rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb standing guard between the tomb and any threat thereof. The

twenty-one steps eludes to the twenty-one gun salute…. the highest honor given any military serviceman and servicewoman. The average tour of duty as a Guard of the Tomb is 18 months. After two years the guard is presented with a wreath pin that is worn on their label signifying they served as a Tomb Guard. There are only 400 presently worn. A Tomb Guard Identification Badge is not something simply given out to everyone. Guards must be between 5’-10” and 6’-2”and their waist cannot exceed 30 inches. Guards must pass stringent tests during their tour of duty for several months and are subject to a strict code of conduct for the rest of their life or surrender their wreath pin. (Source: The Society of the Honor Guard — Tomb of the Unknown Soldier). It is our duty to take this and every opportunity to thank our nation’s military veterans for their sacrifice in defending the language of the Constitution of the United States. Thank you veterans….we are forever indebted to you.

“Salute to all those men and women whose sacrifices have made this country safe and great. This wonderful day is for remembering your bravery and thanking you for everything!” 215 HIGHWAY 75 NORTH, DENISON, TX 75020

Wounded Heros Red River Alliance

OUR MISSION The mission of “Wounded Heroes Red River Alliance” is to honor, empower, and to express our gratitude to our wounded soldiers and their families. OUR PURPOSE To raise public awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women provide aid and assistance to each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. Alvin Hartwell, President of Wounded Heroes Red River Alliance, and board members, are working to put together

programs that will help promote injured vets and their families in the Red River area. The goal is to “meet the spiritual and physical needs “of wounded veterans and allow them to experience the opportunities and normal activities in civilian lifestyle. These events can include going out for the day, fishing, hunting, or just sitting outside and enjoying the outdoors. Due to the generosity of many in the community, the organization has been able to line up places that can accommodate these types of outings, and in some cases can be used by his or her family for the weekend. Another goal of the organization is to be able

to pay for expenses associated with special types of outings for wounded vets and to have the ability to pay for critical family expenses of a wounded vet, if needed. In the organizations eyes the “family is just as much injured at the vet” and we also need to look after them. Currently, the group works with the Bonham VA Hospital. We are a non-profit organization-all proceeds go to help wounded veterans. Please feel free to contact Our Organization with any questions that you may have. Please donate today, 100% of your donations go directly to the activity or effort that you specify.

THREE TIMES A YEAR America honors Its Military. 1. Armed Forces Day - In May. A Day to honor men and women in the service. 2. Mermorial Day - Last Monday in May to honor Veterans who have died. 3. November 11 - A day to remember both living and dead Veterans.

Veterans Day is a day set aside to remember every man and woman who have taken up arms to defend our country. Over 25 Million Veterans walk among us and today we remember them. Our Veterans come from several generations and backgrounds. These Veterans remember WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, Bosnia, Persian Gulf, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet all served in the tradition of the Military. Today we also remember the men and women who did not live to be called “Veterans.” They rest in fields of honor around the world. We old Veterans who served with them remember their names and faces. We have grown old, we remember them in their youth. The families of these Veterans carry a burden of grief that

lift. Our nation owes a debt of gratude to those who place duty and country before their own lives. Our Veterans have born the cost of America’s wars and have paid with their lives the cost of America’s Freedom and today stand watch over America’s Peace. What Veterans have given our country is beyond our power to fully repay. Therefore today we recognize our debt to their honor, and on this special day our hearts are filled with respect and gratitude for the sacriface Veterans have made in defense of our country. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military

veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honor women who have served in the U.S. military. On November 11, 1919, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson issued a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day, in which he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans: ADDRESS TO FELLOWCOUNTRYMEN The White House, November 11, 1919. A year ago today our enemies laid down their arms in accordance with an armistice which rendered them impotent to renew hostilities, and gave to the

world an assured opportunity to reconstruct its shattered order and to work out in peace a new and more just set of international relations. The soldiers and people of the European Allies had fought and endured for more than four years to uphold the barrier of civilization against the aggressions of armed force. We ourselves had been in the conflict something more than a year and a half. With splendid forgetfulness of mere personal concerns, we remodeled our industries, concentrated our financial resources, increased our agricultural output, and assembled a great army, so that at the last our power was a decisive factor in the victory. We were able to bring the vast resources, material and moral, of a great and free people to the assistance of our associates in Europe who had suffered and sacrificed without limit in the cause for which we fought. Out of this victory there arose new possibilities of political freedom and economic concert. The war showed us the strength of great nations acting together for high purposes, and the victory of arms foretells the enduring conquests which can be made in peace when nations act justly and in furtherance of the common interests of men. To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations. The United States Congress adopted a resolution on June 4, 1926, requesting that President Calvin Coolidge issue annual proclamations calling for the observance of November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. A Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made November 11 in each year a legal holiday: “a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day’”. In 1945, World War II

veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Alabama, had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died in World War I. Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of National Veterans Day. Weeks led the first national celebration in 1947 in Alabama and annually until his death in 1985. President Reagan honored Weeks at the White House with the Presidential Citizenship Medal in 1982 as the driving force for the national holiday. Elizabeth Dole, who prepared the briefing for President Reagan, determined Weeks as the “Father of Veterans Day”. U.S. representative Ed Rees from Emporia, Kansas, presented a bill establishing the holiday through Congress. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, also from Kansas, signed the bill into law on May 26, 1954. It had been eight and a half years since Weeks held his first Armistice Day celebration for all veterans. Congress amended the bill on June 1, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans,” and it has been known as Veterans Day since. The National Veterans Award was also created in 1954. Congressman Rees of Kansas received the first National Veterans Award in Birmingham, Alabama, for his support in offering legislation to make Veterans Day a federal holiday. Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October (October 25, 1971; October 23, 1972; October 22, 1973; October 28, 1974; October 27, 1975; October 25, 1976, and October 24, 1977). In 1978, it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11. While the legal holiday remains on November 11, if that date happens to be on a Saturday or Sunday, then federal government employees and a number of organizations will instead take the day off on the adjacent Friday or Monday, respectively.

SPORTS SPORTS Making A Group Advance: Jaden’s Journey: DC’s Mahar makes State XC trip

Lady Hornets’ State trip in ‘22 extends DC’s quick rise in XC

By Rich Hilliard

DODD CITY -- A trip to State had just eluded junior Jaden Mahar, during his first two years of high school. On March 5, it took eventual State champion Graford to deny Mahar, then a Dodd City sophomore, an advance, edging his Hornets basketball team, 30-27, in the Region III-1A boys’ basketball final. The previous couple of falls, he had come up short in cross country, too, despite regional advances each of his first two years to compete in the sport. Brown had a previous role in helping what has become an every-year season-finishing Round Rock trip for Mauppin. With Mauppin in 2020 in a family COVID-19 quarantine when the 23-1A meet occurred, Brown’s sixth-place effort at district led the Lady Hornets to a runner-up finish to extend their season. Mauppin rejoined her team for regional competition, placed sixth and later finished a career-best 10th at State in her then second-straight advance. This year, besides helping her team

DODD CITY -- Senior Lindsey Mauppin’s fourth-consecutive and final advance to the Class 1A State girls’ cross country competition came with company. The whole Dodd City girls’ team joined her on Nov. 5 in Round Rock, having qualified on Oct. 25 as the Region III-1A girls’ runner-up. She wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s exciting,” said Mauppin, who finished fourth in 15:05.4 to lead the Lady Hornets during their fourthstraight team girls’ regional advance, on Oct. 31. “I am thankful to have the whole team going,” she said. “What better way than having the whole team with me! “I’m technically not ranked [heading into State] due to a longer course at regionals. again via her finishes at district and regionals, Brown garnered her own chance to run at State to complete her cross country career. “It took a lot and I had to push myself in practice,” said Brown, “And after that, I had to shake my nerves out.” Led by Mauppin and Brown, the Lady Hornets, with the first-time State advance for a Dodd City cross country team, made more history for a sport which only started at the school in 2019. “It’s grown year-to-year and gotten better,” said Bruce Mauppin, the school’s only head cross country coach since the start and superintendent. “For the girls, we knew we had an outside chance,” he said. “We thought we would be fourth at regionals. “But for them to finish second -- I’m extremely proud.”

He advanced to Round Rock as an individual, finishing 27th on Oct. 25 in the Region III-1A boys’ cross country race in 20:47.19. “I’m really excited and happy I get to go this year,” said Mahar, “after I didn’t last year and had a medical situation that ended my regional race freshmen year. “I want to do the best I can -- get a new personal record,” he said on Oct. 31. “I’ll just go out and run. “I’ve prepared for this all season.” Mahar became the first boy to advance to the State cross country competition from Dodd City since Alec Simpson in 2019 -- the inaugural year for the sport at the school. “I’m happy Jaden made it. He had a chance the last two years,” said Bruce Mauppin, Dodd City’s only cross country coach since its start and superintendent at the school. “For him to make it is great.”

Gardening in November Submitted by Alice Mussett, Fannin County Master Gardener It is time to prepare for freezing weather. In this county, our first average freeze date is Nov. 15. However, the first freeze could come earlier. Be ready to bring inside tender tropical plants. For that winter garden of greens, plan of how to protect the plants during brief below-freezing spells to prevent “down time” while the plants recover from freeze damage. Frost cloth draped over hoops made of PEX tubing or PVC pipe works well. Anchor the cloth to keep it in place in case of stiff breezes. Also, this month, use shredded leaves as mulch or add to compost. Amend garden soil now by applying unfinished compost, shredded leaves, and vegetable trimmings to your garden plot and fork it in lightly. This allows the material to compost completely before time to plant. Composting material can use up the available nitrogen, creating a less fertile soil for a time. Therefore, it is important to amend the soil well in advance of planting. A sprinkle of an organic source of nitrogen, such as blood meal, poultry manure, or alfalfa meal will help the compost break down faster. Once the bed is prepared, add a layer of mulch to keep the weeds out. Prepare for next spring’s gardening by eliminating grass and weeds from new garden spaces by spraying with a

Photo by Alice Mussett. glyphosate only herbicide early this month. Do not forget to prep tools also. Clean and sharpen pruners and clippers. Replace damaged blades. Clean and disinfect other gardening tools after using them. Drain gasoline from power tools and run the engine till fuel in the carburetor is used up. Drain and store watering equipment. Cover outside water faucets with foam dome to protect from freezing. Planting Tips- Ryegrass can still be over-seeded. Ryegrass can also be planted around new construction to stabilize the soil until time to sod in the

spring. Go ahead and remove those tender annuals even if they still look okay and plant winter annuals. For

sun- plant pansies, violas, calendula, stocks, snapdragons, dianthus, and ornamental kale and cabbage. For shade- consider planting cyclamen and primula. Continue dividing and replanting perennials such as daisies, iris, coneflowers, and day lilies. Finish planting those spring bulbs this month. Remember, hybrid tulips and hyacinths go in a paper or net bag (or nylon stockings) in the vegetable drawer in the refrigerator until late December or early January. Do not place apples, pears, or other fruit in the drawer with the bulbs. Bulbs in close proximity to fruit may bloom abnormally. November and December are good months to plant trees and shrubs. Fertilizing Tips- Fertilize fescue and ryegrass with a high-quality high-nitrogen fertilizer early in the month. Water deeply after applying. Fertilize winter vegetables and pansies with a high-nitrogen water soluble food. Feed houseplants monthly. Submit questions to the Extension office at 903-59837453 or email to fanninmastergardener@gmail.com.

Fannin County Commissioners Court Celebrating Ivanhoe Baptist Church’s 150th Anniversary

By Rose Schwartz Tuesday, November 1, 2022, Fannin County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 9:00 a.m., a Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present. Fannin County Treasurer David Woodson introduced Pastor Joshua Lott of the Ivanhoe Baptist Church to lead the Invocation. Pledges were led by Fannin County Commissioner Elect of Precinct 4, Doug Kopf. There were no Introductions and no speakers for Public Forum. 6. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Proclamation celebrating Ivanhoe Baptist Church on 150 years of ministry in the community and have County Judge sign on behalf of the county – County Judge: Judge Moore read the Proclamation recognizing November

Pastor Josh Lott of Ivanhoe Baptist Church and members of the church with the Commissioners Court. Photo by Rose Schwartz 6, 2022, as marking the 150th Anniversary of the Ivanhoe Baptist Church whose ministry and services to the community began in 1872. After Judge Moore read the proclamation

and congratulated those attending court from the church, Commissioner Lane made the motion to approve the Proclamation with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion

which passed. Judge Moore commented on the significance of a church lasting 150 years in its service to the community before inviting the Pastor, the church members in attendance

and the Commissioners to take a photo with him in commemoration of this sesquicentennial event. 7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve payment of bills. 8. Discussion, consideration and action to approve a change of the variance on build line that was approved on September 20, 2022, from 25’ to 20’ and allow it to be from 25’ to 13’; Property ID# 128702 on CR 4620 in Trenton – Commissioner Precinct 2 for Development Services Director: Commissioner Self explained the history of development on CR 4620 and why this change of the variance was requested before making a motion to approve the change of variance. Commissioner Lane seconded the motion which passed. 9. Discussion, consideration and possible action regarding Hunt Energy’s interest in either leasing or acquiring one- and one-half acres of county property for a potential Battery Site – County Judge: After Judge Moore read this item, he asked the Commissioners to review handouts that were given to them. Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser came to the podium and a discussion ensued with there being a consensus that it would be best to lease the property but that there would be a need to discuss other terms than what were presented to them by Hunt Energy. Attorney Glaser then offered to help write a proposal with lease terms acceptable to the court that he could convey to Hunt Energy. After further discussion it was decided that Attorney Glaser would work on that lease proposal to be addressed next week. After Judge Moore noted that this item would be passed on today, a citizen of Bonham asked how

much money would be set up in an escrow account to cover clean-up costs if the company walked away. Judge Moore responded that issue would be taken into consideration in the lease terms Attorney Glaser would be working on. 10. Discussion, consideration and action regarding condensed Commissioners Court agenda on November 8, 2022 – County Judge: Judge Moore explained that the reason this was put on the agenda was no longer an issue and after some discussion he noted this would be passed on. 11. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane thanked attendees from Ivanhoe Baptist Church and congratulated them on their anniversary. She then wished Commissioner Magness a Happy Early Birthday, reminded all that early voting was going on and encouraged everyone to vote before wishing all a wonderful week. Commissioner Self agreed with Commissioner Lane’s comments then noted that there is a lot of road work going on due to the recent rain and asked motorists for patience before wishing everyone a good week. Commissioner Magness congratulated the Ivanhoe Baptist Church on their impressive accomplishment and then commented on the recent rains and thanked all for coming. Commissioner Lackey also extended his congratulations to Ivanhoe Baptist, commented on the recent rain and the resulting road work his precinct is working on and wished all a safe and blessed week. Judge Moore shared scripture verse 2 Corinthians 5:10 before noting that it had been a great two weeks at Boyd Baptist Church with “The Judgement House” having been successful in its outreach. He then recognized Sheriff Mark Johnson who had entered the courtroom during the course of the meeting and noted his appreciation for his attendance. 12. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 9:28 a.m.

About Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore and preserve our priceless environment. The Heard was founded in 1967 by Bessie Heard at the age of 80. In a time when the rate of expansion of the Metroplex was slower than today, she foresaw the need to preserve a place where future generations could experience nature. Today, the Heard’s mission of bringing nature and people together is carried out through education, particularly of young people, which emphasizes an appreciation of nature and its conservation. There are many so-called gods of the world, but then there is THE ONE TRUE GOD. There are many idols, but only one Living God. Paul wrote to the church in Thessalonica, that the Christians had “turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9). God is the creator. The apostle Paul, on Mars’ hill, in Athens, spoke concerning God and said that “him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation” (Acts 17:23-26). God is an everlasting God. Moses wrote that “Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God” (Genesis 21:33). God told Moses that “I am CALVARY UNITED the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, PENTECOSTAL from the house of bondage. Thou shalt have none other gods before CHURCH me” (Deuteronomy 5:6-7). The wise man, Solomon informed us When: Sun. 10:30am. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes Wed. 7:00pm 12:13). Where: 1190 Hwy 56 W. God will judge the world by Jesus Christ. Paul tells us that God Bonham. “now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath Pastor: Steven Luton, appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given as903-583-4346 surance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead” (Acts 17:30-31). John records the prayer of Jesus to help us realize the importance of knowing God and Jesus Christ, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3).

more, He illuminates our mind to understand the message of the Bible. Jesus promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to be our Comfort by standing alongside us to give us strength in time of need. All of us who walk with Him have been lifted up by His indwelling in our lives. A song in our hymnal written by Ed Hatcher is a prayer that asks Him to “Breathe on Us.” A few lines are: Holy Spirit, breathe on me. Fill me with thy peace divine. Kindle a flame of love and zeal Within this heart of mine. Breathe on me, Breathe on me, Holy Spirit breathe on me. Take thou my heart, cleanse every part. Holy Spirit, breathe on me!

teaching in the Bible that sets forth the Triune God, three Persons in One “The Unity of the Trinity”. In the book, “The Titles of God,” written by Dr. George W. Knight, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit has fewer names than does God, The Father, and God the Son. But this does not mean He is less important than the first two Persons of the Trinity. The work of the Holy Spirit may be summarized as follows; He is God’s agent to convict people of sin and lead them to the Father in repentance and confession. He empowers God’s people for the task of witnessing, leads them to recognize the truth, and bringing honor and glory to Jesus, the Son. The Holy Spirit inspired Biblical writers to record God’s revelation in Scripture. Further-

Where Is My Are You A Time? Sunday Morning Re-take “Jesus, have mercy Christian? on one of Your children”

Hello everyone! We had a wonderful service in the Lord’s house Sunday morning! Hebrews 4:16 tells us, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” As you know, we are facing a lot of problems as a nation today. Like I’ve said before, America has forgotten the Godly foundation that it was built on. Psalm 33:12 reminds us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” and we are not holding to this as Proverbs a nation. The only hope that we have of overcoming our problems27:17 - Iro is to cling to the promise given to us in 2 Chronicles 7:14. We serve iron; so sharpeneth a great, mighty, and merciful God, who is willing to grant His manus sharpeneth the mercy and grace, but we must do our part to put our faith and trust in countenance of his Him. That’s the first step toward getting our focus, as a nation, back friend. where it needs to be. I feel led to go in a slightly different direction this week. As I was listening to this week’s message, I couldn’t help but think of a song Romans entitled “Jesus, Have Mercy On Me,” which was performed by the3:23 - For havethe sinned, and Cathedrals Quartet back in the 70’s and 80’s. Their bassallsinger, late George Younce, was not only a great bass singer, but come had a good short of the upper register as well. This song features him, and I love the message glory of God; presented in this song. “Jesus, have mercy on one of Your children, Who’s failed,To and been far fromthere the best. Jesus, have mercy on one every thing The Church is a who’s unworthy,is And already overly a season, and ablessed. I’ve heard of the glory that awaits all the saints, But that’s too high to hope to be, But whenfor sinner hospital time to every purpose You look in the book, And You’re calling the roll, underJesus, the have heaven: include and make mercy on me.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 home, we invite you to come If you are looking for a good church time for GOD visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s thisday!Sunday

By: Michelle O’Rizal The Philosophical Gardener

A couple of years ago, I hired a young mother to help me rescue my garden. She is interested in plants, animals and just being outside. She wanted to work with me but didn’t have anyone to care for her 5-year-old son, so of course, I said bring him along. When they arrived, she set up a spot for him under the trees and handed him an electronic device. I asked if it was OK to see if he might like to garden instead. Looking surprised at the idea, she smiled and agreed. He was quite curious about working with a new adult but after a while he seemed bored and wandered off. A little later her returned with a mischievous look on his face. “Mith-es [Mrs] Michelle. You have leprechauns in your grass.” “Oh. You saw them, did you? Were they by the purple or green oxalis? Oxalis looks a lot like shamrocks of their native homeland of Ireland, you know.” Bingo! I had my hook to hold and expand his interest in gardening. Together we spent the next hour carefully examining each sprout of new growth discussing and demonstrating

root taps, stolon grasses, leavesof-three, and the proper way to apply mulch. It always amazes me how much these little ones absorb when you introduce new concepts to them in an immersive environment. By the end of the day, he had a bouquet of yellow iris, purple oxalis and stories of leprechauns frolicking in his imagination. He came back for three more 5-hour-days with his mother, was good as gold and remembered many of the botanical and common names of the plants. Maybe, just maybe, I planted a seed of gardening inspiration in this little one who will cultivate clusters of oxalis for the leprechauns to frolic about for the next generation after him. Like a ship at the beginning of its voyage, a small nudge in direction can land it in an entirely new destination. Never underestimate the influence of your genuine interactions. You are planting seeds with each engagement.

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 78 degrees. Fishing continues to be similar, as the water temperature cools look for fish to move shallow chasing bait fish. Catfish are good on noodles. White bass fair chasing bait balls over the lake with jigs, small spoons, anything flashy. Crappie are slow to fair on main lake brush piles and standing timber with jigs and minnows. Bass are fair along grass ledges and standing timber with crankbaits. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 74 degrees; 6.04 feet low. Crappie are in 10-25 feet of water. Channel catfish are excellent on baited holes in 8-25 feet of water. For your bigger blue catfish cast in 10-24 feet of water with cut shad and sunfish. White bass are in 1-4 feet of water using 3-4 inch paddle tail swimbaits, casting along the shorelines and retrieving back. Watch for standing birds and shad hitting the surface along the banks. Black bass, yellow bass, gizzard shad, and smaller white bass are running the banks, so the bass are there to eat an easy meal. Black bass are in 3-10 feet of water in rocks, reeds, or shallow stumps biting on square bills crankbaits with 3-6 feet divers, and topwater lures. Sunfish are excellent with small pieces of bacon, or earthworms right above pretty much any brush pile in 10-15 feet of water. Ray Roberts GOOD; Water is clear; 62 degrees; 2.29 feet below. White bass are good fishing in 25-30 feet of water jigging with slabs with a bucktail trailer. Blue and some channel catfish are fair mixed in with whites using cut shad. Crappie are slow scattered from shallow and deep. Target 30 feet of water with minnows and the small jigs should start to work. Bass are good shallow with crankbaits, and soft plastics in 10 feet of water. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees; 3.85 feet low. Lake Tawakoni water temps have dropped to that magical 70 degree mark. When this happens a lot changes on our lake. Eggs start developing in our white bass and striper, and they begin feeding more often and more aggressively. These fish have been good under seagulls using swimbaits on cloudy windy days. On clear calm days fishing is tougher and requires fishing with slabs off the bottom in 15-20 feet of water. The trophy blue catfish are starting to turn on. We are seeing big blues starting to be caught in that 15-30 feet range on big open flats drifting cut shad. Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 65 degrees; 2.41 feet below. Birds everywhere leading the way to feeding striped bass. Limits of striped bass using slabs, or swimbaits when the fish are shallower. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass are excellent on five inch paddle tail swimbaits in 5-10 feet of water along flats and long points in the main lake. Switching to live bait or slabs under working gulls later in the morning and throughout the afternoon. Crappie are good in 15-18 feet of water over brush piles using electronics and minnows. The bigger fish have been stuck to the bottom making them tougher to see, but they will bite if you get down to them. Blue and channel catfish are still excellent in 40-50 feet of water for the eater size fish on cut shad and prepared baits. Trophy blues are moving up on flats in 10-20 feet of water and will start moving towards the mouths of the rivers as the rain continues. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are slow on topwaters early along the bluffs and swim baits in 8-15 feet of water along clay and stumpy banks. Wheat prices are high, and weather and market factors could make the crop an attractive option for Texas growers coming out of a severe drought, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. A wheat head with a blurred out field in the background. A head of wheat nearing summertime harvest. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Laura McKenzie) Mark Welch, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension grain economist, Bryan-College Station, said uncertainty about accessibility to wheat around the globe has driven prices skyward, and emerging drought in wheat-producing areas of the U.S. could add to that

trend. Recent rainfall across many parts of the state improved conditions for Texas wheat, Welch said. Some areas had adequate planting moisture following widespread August rains, but other areas remained too dry to support crop establishment or to plant. Some producers “dusted” crops in, planting seeds into dry soil, and hoped for rain, while others waited for moisture. The recent moisture could boost plantings, seed germination and crop establishment. Most Texas wheat is planted for dual-purpose – coolseason grazing and grain – or for grain production, Welch said. The value of wheat as a forage, either for grazing, hay or wheatlage, and as a grain crop could make the crop very attractive to producers this

season. Welch said planted wheat acres typically trend upward following cotton abandonment, which was widespread this year due to drought. Wheat is also a relatively flexible crop when input costs like fuel and fertilizer are high. He said producers can plant the crop into the first part of December, let fields establish and wait until January or early February to invest money in fertilizer. “Conditions look much better after much of the Texas wheat country got a drink,” he said. “The moisture could boost establishment and set it up for winter, and between that potential and the market conditions, wheat could be an interesting crop for a lot of producers.” CENTRAL The district received some

much-needed rains. Soil moisture levels were very short. Pasture conditions were poor and continued to decline as warm-season grasses were going dormant. Wheat plantings were limited with most producers waiting for more moisture. Some wheat and oat fields were emerging evenly following recent rains. Cattle body conditions were good, and producers continued to provide supplemental feed. Stock tanks were rising, and creeks were flowing. Cotton harvest was complete and remaining replanted cotton fields were terminated. EAST Areas reported up to 4.5 inches of rainfall, but some counties reported drought conditions remained. Water levels in ponds recovered some. Livestock were in fair to good condition with some diet supplementation taking place. Producers continued to search for hay to purchase. Wild pig activity was reported in Gregg County. NORTH Some counties received 1-7 inches of rainfall, but soil moisture remained short for most counties. Water levels rose significantly in many ponds, but livestock water was still a major concern going into winter. Winter crops should get a good start with the moisture. A portion of winter pastures and wheat were planted. Livestock were in excellent condition. ROLLING PLAINS Most counties reported 2-3 inches of rainfall and a cold front. The cooler weather and rain were expected to improve conditions. Wheat emergence was spotty, but the rain should help fields. Producers were more positive about winter wheat following the rains. Cotton harvest was halted by the rain. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor, but moisture should improve conditions. Many acres of rangeland experienced desert termite damage. Producers continued to feed livestock supplements. Wildlife were hitting supplemental feed hard as well.
