It can also pay off. After driving an hour or more to “save money” at Metroplex shopping opportunities, fighting traffic and lines in the stores, it’s likely you could have saved an equal amount and experienced less stress if

time had been taken to investigate local shops. Second, shopping at department stores and gift shops may also save you time. Those types of stores offer a wide variety of gifts versus specialty stores, so

you can cover more of the shopping on your gift list. You are also more likely to find unique gifts that are more memorable. If saving money is extremely important, shop in between meals - eat lunch or breakfast at home and then go shopping. Eating meals out, especially with several kids in tow, can stretch a family budget. Don’t forget to shop safely - keep your phone, wallet and credit cards in a secure place (not always a back pocket!) and don’t lay your phone, purse or wallet down. Ever. So, this holiday season, check out the wonderful shopping opportunities in Bonham - there are many! Gift shops, clothing stores, hardware stores - there should be something for nearly everyone on your Christmas list. You will save money in the long run by shopping in your home town. By Bro. Bill Beasley In two weeks we will be observing Christmas Day again. With all the activity it might be said that the spirit of Christmas is already in the air. Christmas want lists have been made. Greeting cards are being sent and received. The frills of trees, twinkling lights and the tinsel are increasing by the passing day. The thrills of family visits are in the planning stages. Menus are shaping with the promise of having heavy laden dining tables. Most everyone is looking forward to a joyful holiday. A few years ago, in an event titled “The Most Unforgettable Christmas,” I shared some thoughts from my

Christmas In The Air

Christmas in the prisoner of war camp in 1944. While that was 74 years ago, some sober reminders surfaced as I begin to think. These things I recalled: it was my first Christmas ever away from family. We had no Christmas tree. There were no lights or tinsel. Very little food was on the table. I had no Bible from which to read the Christmas story. But I had the essential – I had the Christ of Christmas in

Day, is this: we rejoice in the birth of the baby Jesus. We reflect on why He came. He came to be our Redeemer and that plan was finalized with His death on Calvary. When we receive Him by repentance and faith He comes to live in us. And with this transaction it comes to mean that for you and me He has not died in vain. With Jesus in our heart it will be a most unforgettable Christmas.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas... 6/20/17 John E. Hunt, Sr., Administrative Assistant Fannin County Criminal District Attorney

very nice, clear picture of his face. The police place the picture on social media wanting information. The total time of the theft was less than three minutes and no one saw it happen. The next day the home owner finds the “package” back on his porch with a note inside. Basically “so sorry we took the wrong package” signed “name” along with phone number or driver license number. The thief is now in custody and in jail on a Theft charge. Law enforcement is not always this lucky. We are in the Christmas season and on line shopping has become more and more prevalent with the shopper that does not want to face the crowded stores or the crowded parking lots. That means there are “targets” everywhere for any thief who wants to take the chance. Two people

10/4/16

Each year, we hear crime prevention messages go out about thefts of packages left on porches during this time of year. Recently, there was a story on TV about a man in Fort Worth who placed a box of rocks, that looked like a package, on his porch, to see what would happen. He also placed a camera in an out of the way location aimed at the “package.” At some point in time later, there were two males walking down the street, they see the package, they hesitate, one stays on the street as a look out while the other goes up to the front door and rings the doorbell. Nothing happens so off he goes with the package leaving behind a

in a car driving down the street or county road and they see a package delivered, no one appears to be home so they drive around the block, one gets out and steals the package and they are gone with the package. The Grinch has scored again! Cameras have been mentioned before. A camera shot will not keep your package from getting stolen, probably but hopefully, if placed in a good location, it will give law enforcement a good picture of the thief. If he/she

is stealing yours, that is not the only one. You probably are not going to get the package back with a nice note inside but you might be able to take a thief off of the street. This Christmas season be safe and practice good package management so that they will all get to where they need to go, especially in our rural areas. If you are buying on line this year, think about renting a large mail box at the post office or having it delivered to a friend’s house. Only you can prevent a theft, be safe and do not let the Grinch have a good Christmas!

Commissioner Magness said he has knee surgery coming up and hopes he does not have any complications. Commissioner Lackey reminded everyone of the upcoming Auction for the Courthouse stones on December 15 at 10 a.m. He mentioned the 3 concrete benches on the Courthouse square but no one had any knowledge of them being included in the sale. The Judge was

not sure if they would be included and said they would have to check into that. Judge Carter said the final phase of the Courthouse restoration will be on the agenda next week. He hopes there will be some information to discuss but if there isn’t, he will move the item to December 18. The Judge said they have had very good responses from seven applicants who are interested in the General Manager position over the restoration. They interviewed four yesterday, Monday, December 3rd and will know more by next week. Meeting adjourned.

From Risk to Resiliency 12/11/18 Chronicle A HUD-VASH SHERMAN – Eric M. Bridges, Executive Director of Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) announced today that HUD reports a reduction to 37,878 homeless veterans in 2018 which is a 49 percent decrease from 2009, due to HUD-VASH (Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing) and other veteran programs. HUD-VASH is a long-term case management program for homeless veterans who need case management services to ensure stability. The primary goal of HUDVASH is to help the most vulnerable, chronically homeless veterans and their families successfully move out of homelessness and into permanent housing. The program improves each veteran’s medical and mental health, and enhances each veteran’s ability to remain stable, housed and integrated in his or her local community. Veterans admitted to the HUD-VASH program receive a VA case manager for assessment and treatment planning. Assistance in obtaining the Section 8 voucher provided

through the Texoma Council of Governments’ Housing Choice Voucher Program. La’Ve Jackson, a current VASH participant, spent many years homeless in Dallas struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. In March he celebrated being clean and sober for over a year and is now working with those who are experiencing difficulties with substance abuse. His is quite a story, the story of a remarkable turnaround in fortunes and in his opinion, the product of a random act of kindness. “All everyone wanted for me was for me to have an opportunity and I didn’t even want that for myself-a chance at life to do something different. They didn’t want something from me, they wanted something for me.” La’Ve was an alcoholic and addict for over 30 years, no matter what he tried to do in life, his addiction would show up. He spent four years in the Navy, and recalled spending $15,000 on drugs during his last two weeks of service. At one

point in time, he stripped and sold his brother’s car for money to feed his addiction, this day would ultimately end up being his first day in a homeless shelter. Six years later on a cold Saturday night in February, La’Ve was panhandling in Downtown Dallas when he heard the voice of God telling him to stop asking for money and pray for everyone he met. This would be a major turning point for him. La’Ve began selling a homeless newspaper called StreetZine and met a crew member outside the Dallas Convention Center where Tony Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within” conference was being held. The following months would be the catalyst that changed his life forever. La’Ve was invited into the event by the crewmembers, and after hearing his story, they started a Go Fund Me page that raised over $6,000. At this moment, La’Ve knew he needed to get clean. He started going in and out of rehab because he thought that is what everyone wanted for him but not what he wanted. Sadly, he relapsed each time. Even though Tony Robbins invited La’Ve as his personal guest to the

“Date with Destiny” conas his plane was taking off…he ended up in downtown Dallas once again chasing his addiction. On a rainy night a year later, the shelter La’ve resided at explained that they had no room left for him. They allowed him to eat and wait for the rain to subside, but eventually he had to leave the shelter. It was in this moment that La’Ve said he could not do it anymore. The shelter called the police and when they arrived the officer asked La’Ve what the problem was. “I’m tired of life,” La’Ve stated. The officer responded with “Well, what’s your plan?” “I don’t have a plan; I guess I’ll just step in front of a train,” answered La’Ve. La’Ve was detained and taken to Green Oaks Mental Health Hospital where he found out he was eligible for VA benefits due to his honorable discharge and was eligible for VA services. On May 11, 2017, La’Ve’s 50th birthday, he received a HUD VASH voucher that ended almost a decade of being homeless. “It’s a national disgrace that any person who once wore our nation’s uniform should find themselves homeless,” stated Eric Bridges, Executive Director of TCOG. “As a society, we have a dutiful responsibility to do everything in our power to help our Veterans transition to civilian life, and for Veterans experiencing homelessness; safe and stable housing is a critical first step.” Despite all odds, La’Ve has persevered. The true embodiment of risk to resiliency and an inspiration for anyone who has ever been down on their luck. The best part of his journey according to him was mending the relationship with his mother and being able to be her son again. The Texoma Council of Governments is a voluntary association of the local governments in Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson Counties. Established in 1968, the Texoma Council of Governments promotes economy and efficiency in the coordinated planning and development of the tri-county region through its community and economic development activities. Either directly, or through contractors, the Council provides housing, utility assistance, and weatherization services for low-income citizens in the region and assists the elderly through a variety of Area Agency on Aging programs. The Council also facilitates the delivery of grant funding for homeland security and criminal justice.

JOSEPH’S SONG

As a carpenter one thing I’ve seen You can’t trust the wood when it is green. It bends and it warps ‘neath the carpenters will. A man that is green is unsteadier still. It’s been years since my own father died Years before then I worked at his side. Through passage of years my soul is well tried. But what should I make of so great a tale As large as old Jonah swallowed by the whale? She says there is no father, that there is no other. That the Child she bears is King above all other! She is but young, I would not shame her But secretly I would for safety send her Back to Judah, back to old Elizabeth and back to older Zechariah. That much was clear when I lay down to sleep. In truth it was enough to make me weep. But an angel appeared in a dream that night His garments all glistening, radiant in light. “Fear not to take to thee Mary as wife The Child that she bears is the Author of Life. Jesus, your Savior, Emmanuel King.” It’s been years since my own father died Through passage of years my soul is well tried. I woke with my mind full of sweet light And did what the angel bid me that night. For more information, Please contact Tom Long at 903-227-3589

PROFESSIONALLY MANAGED INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS with NO Commissions!

Securities offered through Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. member FINRA/SIPC Investment Advisory Services offered through Raymond James Financial Services Advisors, Inc.

In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

The first was the award of “All Around Best Team” which is judged on teamwork and communication among teammates with the prize being a Hypertherm Powermax 45 plasma arc cutting system. visit. Wardens arrived at the residence and asked to see the hunter’s license. The hunting license was missing a mule deer tag, and the harvest log revealed the hunter killed a doe on the same day it was purchased. Wardens already knew a buck was killed and asked to see the head. The hunter led the wardens to the living room of the residence where the skull was European mounted and displayed on the wall. According to the hunter, he had killed the buck on Nov. 4, and received the mount back the next day. After a short interview, it was determined the buck was taken on Oct. 23 with a rifle during the archery-only hunting season. Multiple cases were filed as well as civil restitution.

Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce By Malinda Allison

The Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce met on December 4 and elected new officers for 2019. They are: President: Lore Lane Vice President: Jill Hawkins Secretary: Liz Reese Treasurer: Sandra Miller The Honey Grove community owes a huge thanks to Brian Owen for his leadership as President of the Chamber for the past 5 (or is it 6?) years. He has worked tirelessly for Honey Grove, including his work

for Davy Crockett Day and many other Chamber events. Thanks Brian! And the good news is that Brian will stay involved with the Chamber as a director, and will continue to work on Davy Crockett Day, the website, and I am sure more. But in every organization it is vital to bring in new volunteers, and the Chamber is fortunate to have new individuals working for Honey Grove. You can look forward in 2019 to the activities that the Chamber sponsors, as well as new events being planned.

After graduating from NTSU with an Elementary Education Degree, she married Kenneth Wayne Johnson in Bonham, Texas June 12, 1954. She loved to paint, play piano, sew, travel, birds, and was an avid reader. She is preceded in death by her parents, son Michael Wayne Johnson, and sister Myra Fay Piland. The family requests memorials to the Friends of the Blanco Library, the American Cancer Society, and the American Glaucoma Society in lieu of plants and flowers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Heart To Heart Hospice, Jodi BrockBates, Veronica Castillo, and the readers from the Blanco Women’s Club for their wonderful attention and care for our mother, as well as the many people who have prayed and supported her and our family. We know that she is free, and suffers no more. We take comfort knowing she is with those who went before her and rests in the arms of Jesus Christ. She is survived by husband of the home Bryan Demers; three sons Chris, Mathew and Andrew; brothers Steve Pennington, Arthur Pennington, and Robert Margas; five grandchildren Ariana, Damien, McKayla, Logan, Jayden and Eric; and daughter-in-law Brandy Harden. MODENA DAWSON BROWN

Bonham - Modena Dawson Brown was born in Dodd City, TX on May 14, 1927 to Earl and Johnnie Dawson. She left this earth heaven bound on December 4, 2018 for a very deserving rest. Mother survived the Great Depression, telling the story that her daddy always kept a nickel in his pocket. She told how lucky they were to live in the country, to have eggs, a milk cow and garden. Her family was never hungry and often fed those living in town that did not have gardens. She remembered bringing home friends from school. Her mother would tell them to go milk the cow and she would make ice cream. She graduated Dodd City High and Sherman Business School. She was Mother to Brenda Magness, Don Brown, Glenna Bowman and Lauretta Hamilton. She taught us to work and held us to high standards, honesty, to be trustworthy, to have pride in ourselves and everything we did. She was Grannymother to Lisa Blain Smith, Steve Blain, Dana Magness Clemons, Lee Michael Bowman, Heath Bowman, Brynane Bowman Payne, Justin Brown, Jake Brown, Jamye Brown Frazier, Susan Hamilton and Cate Hamilton, Blaze Blain, Bryleigh Blain, Kade Smith,

Kole Smith, Kyler Clemons, Jack Brown, Karter Brown, Clara Joy Brown, Ellie Frazier, Bella Bowman, Kendal Bowman, Liam Bowman, Landry Bowman, Hunter Payne, Noah Payne and Ethan Payne. Mother opened the House of Fabrics in 1965. She was a great business woman in a business man’s world. She actually began sewing at the age of 6, long before patterns were available. She had an extraordinary talent with fabrics, making many prom dresses and wedding dresses. She sewed in an era when clothes were tailored and she was known to have made several men’s suits. She taught others the art of sewing. She continued with alterations until her early 80’s. There was probably nothing she could not do or would not tackle. She remodeled 2 houses, installing a French drain around one of them. She had a huge garden, knew how to pinch a penny and washed her tin foil. She would work all day at the fabric store, come home and put a full course Christmas Eve dinner on a decorated table for her family and guests. Mother loved her siblings, Gene, Lillian, Charles, Patricia, Wesley and Eldon, the 2 yr old which they lost in a house fire. She treasured her Dawson cousins, always attending their family reunion until her health failed. Mother put a whole lot of living into 91 years. She ran her race hard, she ran her race well. A very special thanks to the staff at Seven Oaks nursing center for the past five years. We could not have done this without you. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home, Bonham, TX. Bro. Kenny Richardson officiated. Interment followed at Dodd City Cemetery. Family members honored her as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Mother, to Dana’s Room, Fannin County Children’s Center, 112 W. 5th St, Bonham, TX. https://give.fanninccc. org/participants/98853-danamagness-clemons To convey condolences or sign an online registry, please visit www.coopersorrells.com.
