Looking for a unique Christmas

The Fannin County Museum of History has four

books on Fannin County history which might be just the thing.

The Pictorial History of Fannin County contains many photographs of places all over

the county.

Bonham, Town of Bailey Inglish is a very readable history with delightful illustrations. The Jewish Merchants of Bonham, Fannin County,

Texas, tells a story about Bonham’s Jewish population in the late 1800s and early 1900s and contains many photographs. And recently published is Millard Brent’s The History

of Dodd City, Texas.

These books are available at the Fannin County Museum of History for $20 each. They are also available on Amazon.com. Your purchase of these books supports the Museum.

The Museum is open noon - 4 pm, Tuesday - Saturday, and is

The beautiful landscape of Northeast Texas may soon be obscured with 800 foot towering wind turbines.

Cielo Wind is offering farmers in Fannin and Lamar Counties 10’s of thousands of dollars to lease their land for wind turbines. Last year my husband and I purchased over 1200 acres in these two counties sinking most of our retirement

In a bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sour cream; mix well. Fold in crab, cheese and onions. Cut the top third off each loaf of bread; carefully hollow out bottoms, leaving 1” shells. Cube removed bread and tops; set aside. Spoon crab mixture into bread bowls. Place on baking sheets. Place reserved bread cubes in a single layer around bread bowls. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees until the dip is heated through, 45-50 minutes. Garnish with green onions if desired. Serve with assorted fresh vegetables, crackers and toasted bread cubes.

If you feel this needs salt and pepper, just add it in!

This would make a great appetizer for your Christmas parties. Hope you will give this one a try!

ENJOY!

Fannin County Commissioners Meet: Lake Ralph Hall Update

The Fannin County Commissioners met on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at 9:00 for a regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with all Commissioners and Judge present.

6. Discussion and presentation by Daniel Harrison of Freese and Nichols, Inc. regarding Lake Ralph Hall. Daniel Harrison of Freese and Nichols, Inc. gave a presentation regarding Lake Ralph Hall zoning regulations. There will be two public hearings with the first being held January 26, 2023 at Fannindel High School in Ladonia. Notices to landowners will be mailed after January 1, 2023.

7. Discussion, consideration and action to approve minutes from 11/29/2022 (S) and (R) – County Judge for County Clerk. Motion passed and approved.

8. Discussion regarding Unclaimed Property Capital Credits received in the amount of $36,703.25

County Judge. Judge Moore suggested using some of the money to form a Fannin County Economic Development Corporation or EDC. He also discussed perhaps using some of the credits to have display cases built for the third floor of courthouse. 9. Discussion, consideration and action to set the Hotel Occupancy Tax rate in Fannin County for the unincorporated areas –County Judge. Faith, Bonham

When a person or family join the First United Methodist Church, the pastor asks of them and reminds others what is asked of them, to provide their prayers, presence, gifts, services and witness to the church.

Mary Black, President of United Women in Faith Bonham branch, states, “Every once in a while someone does such a good job

at these things they shine like a bright star and that is what has happened here.”

Members of the United Women in Faith have identified Boyd Ruffner as someone believed worthy to receive recognition and the National Office of United Women in Faith is proud to gift Boyd Ruffner a pin and certificate to award him for his ministries with women, children and youth.

Reliance Fasteners of Denison Texas donates $20,000 to Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy to Build Pavilion

Press Release - Back in 2014 Brent Frailicks had a dream. He wanted to have a fundraiser to help support the upkeep of Sunnyside Cemetery at Savoy where his Dad is buried. So he contacted a local church to see if he could use their building for this project. Every year since, at the same time in November, he and his band, who this year consisted of Fred Spears, Scott Matthews, Benny Vincent and Brent, with the help of the Sunnyside Board

Members, put this show on. It has grown to have a Desert Auction with Roy Fuller, Auctioneer, donating his time also. Ladies of Savoy make or buy their favorite desserts to auction off. Others around the area also donate items: (Sam’s, Home Depot, Luna Azul Mexican Restaurant, Hillbilly Bubba’s BBQ, and others.)

The money made at this event will help with the mowing and upkeep of the Cemetery, which is a non-profit organization

that depends on donations for survival.

At the end of this years Concert, Jeff Francis, a native of Savoy, who coowns Reliance Fasteners of Denison, with Pat Miller, announced that they were donating $20,000.00 to build a Pavillion at the Cemetery which the Board had approved.

The Trustees were overwelmed with this generosity of love. Thank You Jeff & Pat and to all the others who support Sunnyside Cemetery.

The Boys were Back in Town!

Recently the Gator Boys were in town. Those boys have known each other since, Grammar, High School & College. They played ball Football & Basketball.

The Boys are from Lake Charles, LA, all grown up, moved away & have their own families now. They have kept in touch after all these years, good Boys, never in trouble. They get together twice a year one of the places they meet here at our son’s place in Ivanhoe.

The Boys come from afar, some drive and some fly, some bring their campers. they park their cars here for 3 days and don’t move them ‘til they leave. Randy’s place is pretty big so a place for everyone makes do. The boys start coming in on Thursday, they stay for 3 days while they’re here they entertain each other playing cards, shooting skeet, target practice & fishing.

Come time for them to meet they plan everything. Some of the boys like to cook so they decide who cooks and that person brings everything with him to cook.

They cook everything, shrimp, fish, crayfish, crab

and boudin, so good. The other boys bring something for eating, their wives send desserts & treats. This is a man thing no wives. The boys have 3 days to hang, do what they want, they have alot to talk about, take pictures & show old pictures.

Whatever each one cooks they have to bring us a plate and everything is so good. So I get a break I don’t have to cook while they are here. O, yes I forgot our son has a large kitchen outside with everything they need to cook, also has a large patio, bar, 2 large TVs and plenty of chairs for seating.

Come Saturday they are ready for their big football game, yes you guessed it LSU most of them wear jerseys & hats, Randy hung his LSU Flag.

Those Boys are good boys, no trouble we can’t even tell they are here.

Ken & I look forward to seeing them, some call us Mom & Pop. I fed some of these boys when they were in school, some spent the night, boys everywhere. Ken my husband was in the service at the time, so we were stationed in Lake Charles, LA.

Here is a picture taken this year, I believe we had 18 this year. My husband, Ken is in the wheel chair, the guys decided he should be in the picture. So come Sunday all are up early packed and on their way. Honkin & waving as they pass our place.

Hope with God’s blessing we will see them next year.

Grace Chapman Mom to some

P.S.

Most of the boys are in their 60’s.

for nine years. Only during the last two years have we had to publish previously submitted articles due to his failing health and passing away.

12-18-18

We thank Bro. Bill’s family for their generous permission to continue his articles for this past year. His passing December 17, 2021 left a hole in the heart of our community.

Thanks to many calls from our readers, we are very aware Bro. Bill made quite an impact on the community he loved and served.

We are going to cease publishing Bro. Bill’s articles weekly. In the future, on special occasions, we will pull from our library of articles as a memorial to Bro. Beasley and a reminder that we must never forget his humble, unassuming presence for so many years.

Thank you to the Beasley family for your generosity.

We appreciate, Bro. Bill for all his time spent keeping the faith and sharing his wisdom.

‘He Knows If You’ve Been Good Or Bad!’

‘Tis the season, and we hear the very words of the title being sung in popular songs, ‘He knows if you’ve been good or bad’. ‘Tis the season for gifts and fun, the season for joy and good will, the season for songs and make-believe; its a great season and I hope that it is enjoyed by all. There has been over the years, a warning to children to be especially good for this particular time of year to receive presents from ‘you know who’. Adults need to be reminded of their behavior, also. Not because of the man in the red suit, but because of someone far greater.

There is one who ‘knows if we’ve been good or bad.’ He can always see us, “for his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings” (Job 34:21). He is the One and only

God, Jehovah, and there is none other. “Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high?” (Psalm 113:5). Though we may seek to hide sin from God, He ‘knows if we’ve been good or bad.’ Though we may want to enjoy the good blessings from the Lord without doing good, He ‘knows if we’ve been good or bad.’ Though we may commit our transgressions at night or when no one else is around, there is not “any creature that is not manifest in his sight” (Heb. 4:13), and you see, He ‘knows if we’ve been good or bad.’ God is a perfect God and “knoweth ALL things (1 John 3:20). It is because of His perfect knowledge of our actions that makes Him also the perfect Judge.

Just as the song of the bearded man, so God will “render to every man according to his deeds:” (Rom 2:6). All the ‘the secrets of men’ shall be judged by the Son of God, Jesus Christ

according to the gospel (Rom 2:16). There will be no one left out, but “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Cor. 5:10). And there, judgement will be issued “that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (2 Cor. 5:10).

The question is; “have you been good or bad?” The Lord knows. He will judge. God will sentence. Make your soul spotless and clean. If you haven’t been as good as you know you should, remember, “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:35).

May the Lord bless you and keep you safe this holiday season and may we live our lives this day and all of our days to please the ‘giver of every good and perfect gift,’ for He is our all knowing and all powerful God. So, be good, for goodness sake.

Born in Gainesville, Texas, on May 18, 1945, Leroy was the fourth born to Elbert and Alta Shotwell. He graduated High School from Valley View in 1964. Soon after he joined the Air Force where he proudly served his country for eight years. Once out of the service he became an insurance salesman where he enjoyed helping others.

Leroy was a member of Central Baptist Church in Bonham, Texas. He was an active participant in the Men’s Coffee Club and loved Bible study. He most recently shared with his sister, Fay and her husband Rickey, his excitement over the salvations of three children in the church.

In his younger days Leroy enjoyed gardening. He would spray his plants with a water bottle and tell his kids, “you have to be nice to them for them to grow.” He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, pretty much all things outdoors, and Sunday drives with his family. Their favorite family vacation spot was the Florida beaches. He was always making his family laugh with his jokes and often wore the ugliest sunglasses to get you to laugh. In his most recent and later years he enjoyed riding his electric bike around town, trips to Braums, and visiting with friends and family. He enjoyed advocating for others and lending a helping hand whenever and however possible. He did not miss an opportunity to sit and talk or catch up over the phone. He loved his family and friends and they loved him equally. He was no stranger in his town and loved by many.

We will all greatly miss Leroy’s contagious smile, his cut up sense of humor, and often soft spoken demeanor. However, we are thankful to know he is now spending his days in heaven with Jesus and one day we will meet again. His passing was a shock but looking back we see God’s hand in preparing us for this moment and know God also prepared him. He left this earth happy and in a good place with His Savior Jesus Christ.

Leroy is preceded in death by his parents Elbert and Alta Shotwell; brothers, Murrel Shotwell, Jody Shotwell and sister in law Fern; sisters, Rachel Shotwell, Elsie Edgett, and Cindy Shotwell.

Leroy is survived by his three children, Melinda Hammonds and son in law Chad, Kara Shotwell, and Drew Stacy Shotwell; two grandchildren, CJ Hammonds and Bailey Hammonds; one sister, Fay Ramsey and brother in law Rickey; 15 nieces and nephews

They were members of the Fannin County Iris Society and won best of show one year. They loved to square dance early on and later were members of multiple bridge clubs. The greatest joy of any of these activities were the people they met who became dear friends.

Secretary Scott Announces Departure from Office at End of Year

AUSTIN — Today, Texas

Secretary of State John Scott announced that he will resign from office at the end of the year to return to his private legal practice. Secretary Scott officially began serving as Texas Secretary of State on October 28, 2021 after being appointed by Governor Greg Abbott on October 21, 2021. During his time in office, Secretary Scott presided over four major statewide elections in 2022, and worked continuously to educate Texas voters and the public about the election process, with the goal of restoring

confidence in the security of the state’s election systems.

Secretary Scott also oversaw the forensic audit of the 2020 General Election in Texas, and will release the findings of the audit before departing on December 31, 2022.

“When I took office as Texas Secretary of State in October of last year, I did so with a singular goal and mission in mind: to help restore Texas voters’ confidence in the security of our state’s elections,”

Secretary Scott wrote in his letter to Governor Abbott.

“This was no small task, and I approached my duty

with humility, patience, and an open mind. By listening directly to the concerns of local election officials, voters, and grassroots activists from across the political spectrum, I was able to understand how to better educate Texas voters about their most sacred civic duty. I also gained a deep appreciation for the difficult, meticulous, and often thankless work of local election officials in safeguarding the integrity of the ballot box.”

“I am proud to say that Texas has made tremendous progress in restoring faith

DANNY “DAN” TOLAND

in our elections over the past year, and that the Texas Secretary of State’s office has developed a successful framework for analyzing and transparently reporting on election security through the forensic election audit process.”

“With a successful 2022 General Election in the rear view mirror, and the final findings of the 2020 Texas forensic audit soon to be released, I write to inform you that I intend to return to my private law practice at the beginning of the New Year.”

Bonham-Danny “Dan” Toland, aka “Britches”, age 70, of Trenton TX was born on March 4, 1952 in Nacogdoches, TX to William and Peral (Greenwood) Toland; he passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in McKinney, TX.

Graduation last spring took away the last two remaining starters from Dodd City’s 2021 undefeated Class 1A State championship girls’ basketball team.

Despite the departures -- including an all-state senior player -- the Lady Hornets have begun the 2022-23 season strongly.

Dodd City reached district play still un-

defeated -- 13-0, after winning its Craig Reed Invitational on Dec. 3 -- via returning players from last season’s regional semifinalist team -- the school’s eighth-consecutive to reach the girls’ basketball regional tournament -- and varsity newcomers.

Senior Lindsey Mauppin, the District 23-1A offensive superlative winner last season, returns for second-year Lady Hornets’ head

coach

Juniors Addyson Chaney, a first-team all-district selection, and Natally Medina,, a second-team all-district selection, are also back for Dodd City which with the start of 23-1A play this month begins its pursuit of an 11th-consecutive undefeated district title and 13th-straight postseason.

Five superlative winners highlight HG’s all-district football honorees

Area-finalist Honey Grove earned five superlatives -player of the year and top newcomer honors on both sides of the ball and on the offensive line --in the District 9-2A-I football awards for 2022.

Texas Crop and Weather Report

Reagan Noland, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist, San Angelo, said the recent storm systems delivered good moisture throughout most of the region. Most locations received 2-3 inches, with some catching up to 4 inches of rainfall.

Noland said the moisture will help planted wheat and any cover crops planted by producers in the region.

“Everyone got rain. It was slow and was able to soak in, and the winter crops will cer-

tainly benefit from the moisture,” he said. “We are still in a deficit for the year, but we are in much better shape than two months ago.”

Much of the Rolling Plains received 1-2 inches of rain that has improved soil moisture conditions in wheat fields, said Emi Kimura, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist, Vernon. The rains helped moisture conditions but hindered the region’s cotton and peanut harvests.

Kimura said the moisture should sustain the wheat crop through December but that additional rains will be needed into January and February. Most producers utilize the wheat for grazing and decide in late February whether to continue utilizing fields as forage or taking the crop to grain.

“A lot of producer decisions regarding wheat will come down to weather and grain prices going forward,” she said. “But so far, so good. At

least there is some optimism. It was depressing to talk about any crop a few months ago because it was so dry.”

Larry Stein, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension horticulture specialist, Uvalde, said much of the Winter Garden region of Texas received much-needed moisture from multiple precipitation-producing systems over the last 10 days. Recent precipitation started with days of drizzly conditions followed by a good rain.

Much of the region had not received significant moisture since the August rains that dried quickly under triple-digit temperatures and high winds, Stein said. Water tank and pond levels remained a concern, but producer optimism

about wheat and winter forages is higher.

Stein said the moisture will help the spectrum of plant life from trees and landscape plants to pastures and crops in the field. Many producers planted wheat and ryegrass before the rainfall and that the moisture could influence future plantings.

“It was as dry as I have ever seen it after that August rain,” he said. “It dried out so quickly and was very dry and hot. It’s no longer powder dry. People talk about getting a milliondollar rain, well this one was probably a billion-dollar rain.”

NORTH

Soil moisture was short to adequate. Rainfall amounts were 2-6 inches across the district

with some flooding in low-lying areas and very muddy field conditions. Winter wheat was planted and emerging well. Hay feeding continued. Winter pastures were planted early and emerging well. Livestock looked to be in good condition going into winter months.

EAST

The district received large amounts of rain. Ponds and creeks were filling. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair to good. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate.

Livestock were in fair to good condition with supplemental feeding taking place. Wild pig damage was severe in some areas as they were flushed out of the bottoms by recent rains.
