Sunday Morning Re-take

Hello everyone! It was a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning! Unfortunately, due to having to work, I was not able to be there, but I have watched the service online. What a thrill it was to see a full choir! As we move into the Christmas season, we must be mindful of the reason that we celebrate, which is prophesied of in Isaiah 9:6. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” We must never forget that Jesus is the reason for the season. For our hymn reference this week, I turn a hymn written

by Louis F. Benson in 1889. “O sing a song of Bethlehem, Of shepherds watching there, And of the news that came to them From angels in the air: The light that shone on Bethlehem Fills all the world today; Of Jesus’ birth and peace on earth The angels sing alway.” If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. We hope to see you this coming Lord’s day! Josh Stevenson Central Baptist Church Bonham, TX https://www.facebook.com/ cbcfannin

Word became flesh and in His sacrifice He became the Redeemer who paid our sin debt. We magnify the Christmas story by reading it worshipfully. And in so doing we are challenged to lift up the Christ of Bethlehem, as did those present during the first Christmas. Mary’s selection to be the mother of Jesus gave to us the God-man. The Magi visit showered the baby with precious gifts. Following the star of Bethlehem was an act of obedience that should be likened

The only regret that I have had during this time is to have written them without the accompanying presence of my precious companion. The manger miracle tells us that in His birth the

Children’s Learn to Draw Classes at Creative Arts Center

Press Release - We are pleased to resume our children’s classes this January! drawing with Wayne Smith starts 01/08/22 at 10:30 am and runs consecutively on Saturdays with the last class 02/19/22. “Think you can’t draw? Join artist and volunteer Wayne Smith as he leads students ages 7 and up through a comprehensive course on spatial relationships titled “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain”. Through a series of exercises provided by the curriculum, students will learn to see the relationships between positive and negative space; this works by giving the left brain a problem it cannot solve and gives way to a right brain shift. If the

right brain can see a shape, you can draw the shape! This is a 7 week series held Saturday mornings at 10:30am for both members of the art center and the general public. Space is limited so make your reservation soon; cost is $70 for members or $100 for non-members and scholarships are available for those in need. Please contact the Creative Arts Center at BonArtCenter@gmail.com or call 903-640-2196 for more details, to make a reservation, or for information to apply for a scholarship.” Dates for the recurring event are as follows: 1/8/22, 1/15/22, 1/22/22, 1/29/22, 2/5/22, 2/12/22, 2/19/22

Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

Tuesday, December 7, 2021, County Judge Randy Moore called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. A quorum was established as all County Commissioners and County Judge were present. The invocation was led by Darrell Hathcock, the Director of the Fannin Baptist Association of Missions after he quoted Luke 1:74. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, retired. 4. Introductions: There were no introductions. 5. Discussion with Bonham Chamber of Commerce regarding a donation from capital credits earlier in the year: Chance Peeler, Chairman for the Bonham Chamber of Commerce, spoke to thank the Court for allocating the financial funding needed to find storage for the Christmas decorations (some of which are antiques) that are being used in the Christmas display on Center St. Judge Moore commended the Chamber for the good job done on the display and the Christmas Tree. 6. Discussion regarding replacement of Fannin County Courthouse marker: Larry Standlee with the Fannin County Historical Commission spoke to explain the process that would be needed to be followed in the replacement of the courthouse marker. He talked about how the narrative on the marker would need to change THC’s (Texas Historical Commission) involvement and the cost involved in getting this done (somewhere around $1,900.) He asked if there were any questions before noting that he would get the process started and keep the court apprised of his progress. 7. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Courthouse Restoration: Judge Moore stated that he did not receive an official update from Turner Construction but spoke about the tour he took the day before and gave a brief report of the work he viewed and how he was told that the scope of the work outside of the courthouse would be finishing up soon. Noting that he isn’t sure about the completion date but gave a possible end of January date for move-in. Commissioner Lackey added that the Architect would be at the courthouse around 10:30 that morning. He noted they are very satisfied with the outside progress and stated that the

Judge Moore ended his update with a comment about his anticipating Christmas Carols to be broadcast from the Courthouse soon. 8. Discussion, consideration, and action to approve minutes from 09/14/2021: Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve minutes. 9. Discussion and report regarding Indigent Healthcare for November 2021: Director of Indigent Healthcare Mark DeMay began his report by first reminding everyone how blessed we are in relation to the patients he sees daily. He noted how people can take for granted the blessings in their lives and stated how he is thankful for the ability to work with Indigent Care every day. He then proceeded to report a total of 244 calls, 19 in-office appointments and explained when a phone appointment is necessary. He said there were 10 people screened for indigent care with 3 approved, 1 pending, and 6 referred to other programs. He noted there were 3 renewals, 3 patients who came off the program and went back to work, with 1 patient removed from the program for noncompliance with the guidelines and rules of the State of Texas and the County Commissioners. Discussion, consideration, and action to accept recommendation from the Bois d’Arc Lake Zoning Commission to approve Property ID #70325 for legal non-conforming use in relation to Section 3.06 of the Lake Zoning Regulations: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins spoke on how this property was looked at due to a complaint from a neighbor and how it was determined that the owner began the building of his business well before the regulations came into effect in October of 2018. Judge Moore addressed the landowner, Jose Hernandez to hear what he had to say, and Mr. Hernandez questioned the accuracy of the Property ID# being 70325 as his Property’s ID # is 73025. Commissioner Lane confirmed that the number on the online agenda was 73025 but not on the written agenda. Judge Moore asked the record to show that the actual number was 73025 and a motion was made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Self, and passed to approve. Judge Moore thanked Mr. Hernandez for working with the court on this and said he would just need to get with Di Hopkins regarding the screening of his property. 12. Bois D’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan Meeting – Fine Tuning

By Rose Schwartz

Wednesday, December 8, 2021, NTMWD Watershed Manager David Cowan opened around 10:07 a.m., what was feasibly the last meeting of the Bois D’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan Meeting. On-site there were approximately six of the Steering Committee members present with one member attending via zoom. About the same number of interested stakeholders were also present. Stephanie de Villeneuve, Dr. Allen Berthold, and Ward Ling with the Texas Water Resources as well as Water Resource Specialist Blake Alldredge were attending via Zoom. David Cowan began the meeting by congratulating all in attendance for the impressive progress made in the compilation of the nearcompleted Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Protection Plan manual. He gave a brief overview of the nine chapters: Chapter 1: Introduction to Watershed Management; Chapter 2: Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partner-

ship; Chapter 3: Watershed Characterization; Chapter 4: Water Quality; Chapter 5: Pollutant Source Assessment; Chapter 6: Strategies for Watershed Protection Plan Implementation; Chapter 7: Education and Outreach; Chapter 8: Resources to Implement the Watershed Protection Plan; Chapter 9: Measuring Success. At the point of discussing the contents of Chapter 5, Steering Committee member Judge Moore asked if there was going to be a monitoring meter at Hwy 82 and Bois d’Arc Creek. A discussion ensued about who makes the decisions where monitoring stations are located with Judge Moore stating he believes there is a lot of bacteria at the site of Bois d’Arc Creek and Hwy 82. Mr. Cowan said he would put in the manual that the desire exists to have that specific site monitored. A discussion ensued with the question asked by City of Bonham’s Director of Public Works Lance Capehart about what the driving concern was behind the request to have a

T FL O LARGEVSENTOROYRING ! IN In NE Texas & SE Oklahoma

monitoring station located at the aforementioned site as he noted that the area is currently being monitored by TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environment Quality.) Mr. Cowan continued regarding previous concerns voiced, such as the concern that 15% removal of the current population of feral hogs in the watershed would not be considering the growth of the population of hogs, and he noted that language was added into the manual to address that concern. He then noted that on page 84 of the manual, language was also added to show the concern was brought up before about the number of 30 failing OSSFs systems needing to be identified to repair or replace was too low. Judge Moore then questioned how the number of 30 was arrived at as he believed that there was a much higher number of failing OSSFs needing to be addressed than 30. Continued See Meeting on page 13

Burial followed in Willow Wild Cemetery. James passed away early Friday morning, Dec. 3, 2021 at Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home. James was born Oct. 18, 1927 in Krum, Texas, the son of Aubrey B. Mayo and Fannie Maureen Bufford Mayo. He was a graduate of Farmersville High School. James married the love of his life, Doris Jean Davis on July 28, 1956 in Farmersville, Texas, and she preceded him in death Sept. 15, 2011. He served in the Merchant Marines and was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. In 1956, James attended barber school and began barbering, a career that would span 51 plus years. The couple moved to Rockwall in January of 1960 and James owned and operated Mayo’s Barber Shop for 20 years. His customers were too numerous to count, but one stood out among the crowd – during 16 of these years, he cut Congressman Ralph Hall’s hair. In 1980 he sold the barber shop and began to assist Doris in her wedding catering business until 1986. James was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockwall and served as a Deacon for over 50 years. They moved to Bonham in 1988 and James opened his barber shop in 1990. His career continued until 2006 when his health made it necessary to retire. He was a member of Boyd Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for many years. He also taught Sunday School classes including a 6th grade class which he taught along with Becky Farris. Meeting Continued from page 11

More discussion ensued on this topic which was also tied to the need for more monitoring stations. The topic of funding came up and what EPA would accept as reasonable when approving grants. Judge Moore stated that the number of 300 would be a more realistic number of failing systems existing and that instead of expecting to spend $7,500 to replace a failing system, in the case of some aerobic systems, a better answer might be to expect just a reworking repair that would suffice for much less, for instance, $3,000. He also noted that landowners would probably be willing to come up with some of the cost to repair their failing OSSFs if provided grant money to offset that cost. Stephanie de Villanueve added that if too high a number is used in the manual, it could possibly cause the EPA to deny grants for the reason of it not being an achievable goal. Much discussion ensued with input from Dr. Allen Berthold stating that whatever number is agreed upon, the justification of why that number was arrived at would have to be shown to EPA for the grant to be approved. After a discussion that did not bring about an agreedupon number, David Cowan stated the topic of OSSFs would be tabled until January 7 to take into consideration the taking off for the Holidays. He was not sure if another meeting would be needed to be held or if

8, 2021 at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, TX. Bruce married Patsy Louis (Bailey) Sullivan on December 31, 1971 in Livermore, CA. He served honorably in the United States Navy and worked as a heavy equipment diesel engineer before retiring. Bruce was a member of the American Legion Post 345. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Bruce was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by wife, Patsy Sullivan of the home; daughters, Peggy Wilbur and husband Greg of Grassvalley, CA; Donna Minster of Coppell, TX; Jackie Howell and husband Charlie of Dodd City, TX; grandchildren, James, Johnnie Mack, Jennifer, Michelle, Rhonda, Garry, Paola, Christy, Cheree, and Amy; 23 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cindy Grant, and grandson, T.J. Grant. Memorial services were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at CooperSorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Bonham, TX. Bro. Mike Haney officiated. between now and January 7 the Steering Committee could review the entirety of the document and communication via e-mail could be sufficient for comments to be agreed upon and made to the document. Those comments could then be worked into the document for a finished document to be made available from January 17 to February 18 via press release for public comment before submission for agency review. Continuing, he advised that Agency Review can typically take up to six months but once EPA accepts it as an achievable plan, that opens the door for grant applications. He noted that if the public comments get back by mid-February and any adjustments to the document are made, fast forward, it will put this right into the period where TCEQ and EPA would be accepting their grant applications. He also added the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation also generally accept grant applications in September. Mr. Cowan reiterated once again that “this still remains a voluntary plan, if EPA accepts it, that’s great. It means it opens the door for funding. It’s not regulatory, nobody is bound to do anything by this plan.” Mr. Cowan also assured Lance Capehart in answer to his question, that if grant funding was obtained, the City of Bonham would qualify to receive funding to do things to improve water quality around Bonham Lake. The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.

Week of December 9, 2021 Cooper GOOD. Water lightly stained; 56 degrees. Fall fishing is holding steady. Largemouth bass are good on deep diving crankbaits, black or red plastic worms, chatter baits, and football jigs. The white bass and hybrids are good over humps and flats using silver or white slabs and chartreuse swimbaits. Crappie are fair with minnows working brush piles and timber in 16-25 feet of water. Catfish are good on punch bait and chicken liver. Fork FAIR. Water lightly stained; 62-64 degrees; 2.92 feet low. Largemouth bass are good on Carolina rigs and Viper XP jigs in black or blue along the creek bends and drop-offs in 4-8 feet of water. Medium diving crankbaits colored in a bream pattern are good on points and humps on the deeper side in 6-8 feet of water. Suspending jerk baits with black back and gold side, orange belly, or AYU are working best on the points in 4-6 feet of water and in the grass in 3-5 feet of water. Grapevine GOOD. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees; 0.98 feet low. The weather is perfect for getting out on the lake and fishing. White bass are good with schools moving quickly. Success comes on a stinger hook using a bait hook. Catfish are good with large fish being caught. Report by Omar Cotter, Luck O’the Irish Fishing Guide Service. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 57 degrees; 3.68 feet low. Fishing is similar as we head into the Holiday season. Crappie are on good, biting jigs and minnows in submerged timber in 25-30 feet of water. White bass are good on windblown banks in 2-10 feet of water using swimbaits and spinners. Blue catfish are great in 17-25 feet of water using cut bait. Black bass are good in brush piles in 20 feet of water and along rocky ledges using Alabama rigs, creature baits, jerkbaits. Crankbait divers in 12-25 feet of water have also been successful. Report by Carey Thorn, White Bass Fishing Texas. Lewisville GOOD. Water lightly stained; 57 degrees; 1.46 feet low. Fish are becoming more active, so change locations frequently to chase them around. Check the

weather before heading, and be sure to follow safe boating practices. White bass are good as shallow as 6 feet early in the day, moving to 30-feet later. Crappie are good, catching average sizes on main lake brush piles in 18-22 feet on minnows and one-sixteenth ounce shad colored jigs. Ray Roberts FAIR; Water lightly stained; 57 degrees; 0.65 feet low. White bass are moving quickly in 20-28 feet of water on main lake points biting on one-ounce silver and chartreuse slabs, with better luck on smaller slabs because the smaller size is most similar to what they are feeding on. The bass are moving quickly, so the bite is best on the bottom using Alabama jigs in 30-35 feet, letting the bait hit bottom and slowly reeling up. The bite is best while the wind is blowing and dies down when the wind does. Crappie are good on main lake brush piles 20-30 feet on minnows, with bigger fish in the Buck Creek area in the standing timber around 20 feet with bait suspended in the 10-12 feet of water. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 57 degrees; 1.76 feet low. Trophy catfish are good on cut gizzard shad in 30 feet of water. Channel and blue catfish are still going over on the South end of the lake in 23-35 feet of water using worms and punch bait. Use cut bait to land the big catfish. White bass are good on the flats in the mornings. Striped bass are in the middle of the trees. Crappie are biting

on minnows and jigs. Report by Keith Parks, Messin’ with the Fish. Texoma EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 57 degrees; 1.37 feet low. Striped bass are good transitioning away from the slab bite to swimbaits, four-inch worms, and on windy days Alabama rigs. The dead stick bite is starting to pick up. Water temperatures dropping in the creeks will have the fish moving back out to the main lake. Winter is the best time to catch trophy catfish. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.

Game Warden Field Notes

The following items are compiled from recent Texas Parks and Wildlife law enforcement reports. How Trashy On Nov. 20, a Lubbock district game warden received a call about several illegally dumped sandhill cranes in a community dumpster. The Lubbock police department officer on scene climbed into the dumpster to confirm that the birds were not breasted out and the warden responded to collect evidence and begin interviewing possible suspects and neighbors. The dumpster was next to a Texas Tech University fraternity and a large apartment complex. After interviewing multiple individuals, the suspect was discovered and admitted that he and his friend left the cranes in the back of his truck the day prior and thought that the temperature was too warm to keep the meat. Waste of game charges were filed on both individuals. Two Hearts That Beat as One On Nov. 16, Anderson County game wardens were patrolling near Highway 155 for deer hunters. While traveling, the wardens noticed a freshly caped whitetail deer hide stretched and tacked on a 4x8 sheet of plywood and a gentleman observing it. After turning around to make an inspection, the gentleman and his wife both noticed the game wardens making an effort to approach their residence and left the scene. After further inspection, two

undersized buck heads were found along with the deer hide. Time elapsed and after a brief wait, the female suspect returned to the scene. The wardens questioned her about the deer and the location of her husband. She stated that she dropped her husband off at work. After further investigation the husband was located at the local Walmart and later returned to the scene. The husband admitted to killing a doe and said that his wife killed an illegal buck a few weeks prior. As for the other whitetail buck, the couple removed its head from the median of Highway 155. Multiple citations were issued including hunting under the license of another, allowing another to hunt under his/her license, and no hunting license. The case is still under investigation and pending. See You Later On Nov. 9, a Pecos County game warden acquired a search warrant for a residence in Fort Stockton that was known to have a live American alligator as well as other illegally obtained live species. Unfortunately, the resident of the house had moved out a week prior to another location in town. Left at the house were two ornate box turtles and one red-eared slider which were relocated at the request of the landlord. Later in the day, the wardens were able to meet with the suspect to conduct an interview. The suspect was asked to write and sign

a statement about all the animals he has had, where he got them, how he got them, and where they are now. The written statement admitted that he had possessed an American alligator and other species but had released them a week ago near the road where he collected them. The suspect consented to a search of his new residence to prove he no longer had any other animals. Citations issued, cases pending. SnapTrap A Henderson County game warden received information from an individual who said he saw a Snapchat video of a young man shooting off the highway multiple times at night. After reviewing the video, the warden was able to obtain the shooter’s name and location. Game wardens interviewed the individual who said that he was shooting at some pigs crossing the road and didn’t know that the passenger was recording him with her phone. He was unaware it was going to be posted to social media. Cases pending. Drive-by Poaching On Nov. 9, a Henderson County game warden was contacted by a landowner who said he heard a gunshot near the end of his driveway right after sunset. The landowner walked down to the county road and found a freshly wounded doe in the ditch. Approximately 45 minutes after the doe was shot, the warden was talking to the landowner when a truck stopped for a few seconds where the deer had been shot, then proceed to leave the area. The warden made contact with the driver who said he was going to his girlfriend’s house. The warden noticed a shotgun in the passenger seat and again asked the driver what he was doing in the area. After a short discussion, the driver admitted to shooting a deer from the county road and said he had come back to pick it up after he made sure no one heard him shoot. As the warden was busy with the driver of the truck, the landowner came to the scene with another individual. The landowner stated he watched this individual, with his thermal scope, as he tried to drag the doe to the county road so they could load it up. Both individuals were arrested and booked into Henderson County jail for multiple violations.

at their sides are common signs of colic. Diagnosis is based on a physical exam consisting of checking the heart rate, temperature, intestinal signs, performing a rectal palpation and nasal gastric tubing (to check for reflux). Treatment is based on the type of colic presented. With appropriate and timely treatments, the prognosis for colic is usually good. Some Do’s and Don’ts of Colic. 1. Do call the Vet immediately. The Vet can ask questions over the phone to assess what plan of action to do. 2. Don’t use the wait and see attitude. Even if symptoms appear very mild, they should never be ignored. If your gut feeling tells you the horse isn’t doing right, it usually isn’t. 3. Do have a dose of Banamine on hand. You may be instructed by your vet to give Banamine orally and wait 1 hour to see if the colic resolves. Don’t over medicate. If one dose of Banamine did not work, the condition is beyond what the drug can do. Take the horse to the vet. 4. Do look for the presence of feces and consistency. 5. Do walk your horse if possible. Walking can stimulate gut mobility, gas passage, prevents rolling, and may clear mild colic. Walk for 1 hour to give the Banamine time to work. Don’t walk several hours as it will exhaust the horse. Excessive and or aggressive exercise slows gut mobility and can increase dehydration. 6. Don’t give enemas or put the water hose in the rectum.

The rectum tissue can tear very easily and this can be fatal. 7. Don’t feed or hay the horse as food can make the problem worse. Restrict water also, until the horse can be tubed or is better. 8. Do start thinking about trailering as soon as colic symptoms are observed. Is your trailer ready to go? If not, borrow one or have a hauler on standby. When hauling, move the trailer dividers to the side, so the horse doesn’t get cast underneath them. Most horses concentrate on riding in the trailer and won’t go down. Never ride in the trailer with the horse. COLIC PREVENTION 1. Do maintain a consistent feeding schedule and feed more hay. Horse’s intestinal tracts are made to eat forage grass or hay constantly. Unless your vet has recommended a restricted diet, offer free choice hay, especially in cold weather. Don’t run out of hay and then days later put out a round bale. The horse will overeat and get impaction colic. 2. Do feed grain twice a day. Split the daily ration into smaller amounts, instead of one big grain meal. Large amounts of grain especially with no hay, cause gas colic. 3. Do encourage drinking, by adding salt to the feed. Provide cool water in the summer and warm water in the winter. Keep water containers free from ice during freezing temperatures. Most horses don’t drink as much in cold weather. Eager eaters on round bales may not stop and consume enough water. This is a recipe for colic. You can increase consumption by adding water to their grain

ration or alfalfa cubes. 4. Do take steps to reduce sand ingestion. Feed grain in a trough feeder, rubber tub, or barrel. Placing a rubber mat under the feeder will decrease the sand consumed when the horse picks up dropped grain. Sweep the sand off the mat regularly. You can check your horse’s manure for sand by placing 2 cups of manure in a gallon zip lock bag and filling with water. Shake well until all manure is dissolved. Hold the bag by 1 top corner, tap the bag, and the sand will settle in the lowest corner. It there is ½ teaspoon or more, treat with psyllium or sand clear. 5. Do give gastric ulcer prevention products for stressed horses, performance horses, and horses that have a history of ulcers. Neighlox, U-Gard or Ulcerguard, given daily helps keep ulcers in check. We also have a Succeed fecal Ulcer test, to see if your horse has Ulcers. 6. Do consider programs or major medical insurance that covers colic expenses. Treating colic can be very costly. Some equine insurance policies cover only surgical colic, while major medical insurance covers both medical and surgical. Smartpack, Platinum supplements have surgical colic coverage benefits. Arenus Assure Gold supplement offers medical and surgical benefits. Refer to the manufactures’ website for details. The good news in that most colics can be resolved 90% of the time. A phone call to your Vet is far less costly, than dealing with a worsening colic situation.

It doesn’t really take much prompting to get ol’ Windy Wilson to start holding court on all things strange … not at the Mule Barn truck stop. All it takes is someone slowing down enough to listen to our aging camp cook. Someone accidentally said the word “quail” and that was enough. Now ol’ Horton lived ‘way up Lewis Crick from here, Windy said. Had this old mule named Putner. Ol’ Putner got his name ‘cuz when he was foaled, he putner died. But Horton trained Putner to do things Horton liked to do. In fact, that’s the reason them two bird hunters from the city drove over to Horton’s place that day. Opening day of quail season, doncha see. They was told ol’ Horton he had him a mule who could point quail, and Horton says he sure as sugar does. He said he’d rent ol’ Putner out to

‘em for ten dollars a day. Guaran-dog-teed him steady to wing and shot, don’t you know. So they gave him the ten bucks and Horton turned Putner loose and he galloped around through the puckerbrush and then slammed into the prettiest long-eared point you ever seen. Sure enough, he found them a covey of quail, and when they shot the birds, ol’ Putner retrieved them back to the hunters. Picked ‘em right up in his mouth just as gentle as a marshmeller. Well, those ol’ boys had their limits by lunch time and they couldn’t believe it. They took Putner back to ol’ Horton and said they had to have him, and they didn’t care how much it cost them. Horton shook his head and said he couldn’t do ‘er. Nossir. Not for any money. Why not? Those hunters asked him. Why boys, said Horton,

it’s almost time for the salmon run, and Putner would rather fish than hunt, any day. Brought to you by “Packing the Backyard Horse” by Slim Randles, now available on Amazon.com.

District Director/County Chair Melanie Grammar spoke next, exuding excitement over the large number of visitors, approaching the annual FCRW Cookie Exchange Event and the attendance to that event by Kit Whitehill (the newly elected President of the Texas Federation of Republican Women). Concluding with comments on the upcoming election, she pointed out that Monday the 13th at 6:00 p.m. would be the last day to file for a place on the ballot and urged all to be sure anyone new to the county is registered to vote. President Clemons then introduced the evening’s program speaker, Melody Michaud, the President of the Open Arms Homeless Shelter in Bonham. Ms. Michaud began by asking for questions from the audience but first invited everyone to visit the website of oashelter. com which is up and running. She pointed out that Director Mark Sanderson had also attended the meeting should anyone care to visit with him. She then fielded questions ranging from how people can volunteer at the shelter, to what the occupancy of the shelter is and how many people have come through the shelter since its opening in June of 2020. She noted that though there is accommodation available for a family dynamic, most of the homeless they help do not have kids with them. Stressing the need for volunteers, she also noted that there is always a need for supplies. She commented how people can become homeless for a huge variety of reasons from loss of employment to disability to awaiting social security, or veteran benefits. She concluded by noting that Open Arms Shelter is a faith-based organization and quoted a passage from Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest..” After Melody’s presentation, President Clemons asked those in attendance

who are elected officials and/ or those who are running for election or re-election; to stand and state their name and status. She then noted there would be five candidates speaking about who they are, which offices they are running for, and why they are running for office. The first speaker was County Court at Law, Judge Charles Butler who is running for re-election, started by thanking the FCRW for allowing him to speak and noted he was most thankful for his wife of 42 years. After describing his family, he described the types of cases his court handles and concluded by stating the importance of knowing that men had given their lives for the rights we enjoy today. The second speaker, County Clerk Tammy Biggar, described the duties of the clerk’s office, the services available to the citizen via the clerk’s office, and the huge job of having brought the office into compliance with election laws. Incumbent candidate for JP of Precinct 2, Bob Clemons, spoke next and began by welcoming all who attended the meeting. He explained how he has faithfully served in the JP’s office since April 3, 2018, and noted how he had prior retired from 16 years of being Constable of Precinct 2. After listing his qualifications and describing his family, he commented how his job as JP requires him to be available 24/7 and concluded by asking for everyone’s vote. The fourth speaker to speak, Don Grammar, is a candidate for JP of Precinct 2. He described himself as a disabled Vietnam veteran, a conservative Republican who as a member of the FCRW has been politically active for many years and is the spouse of Melanie Grammar. A former 30-year employee of IBM, he described how for over 20 of those years he was in management. After leaving IBM, he worked as the IT Director for the City of McKinney for 14 years. He noted his involvement in a long list

of activities in Fannin County, said he is running is to make sure law enforcement and first responders have everything they need from the justice of the peace office. The last speaker to speak was the Incumbent candidate for JP Precinct 3, Judge Kenny Karl who is running for re-election. After the audience discovered it was his birthday, most everyone broke out in singing “Happy Birthday to You” which President Clemons jokingly stated reduced his speaking time by 1½ minute. Describing himself as a Christian Conservative who was first elected in 2014, he said the most honorable thing anyone can do in life is to serve others. He stated he had brought a written list of all the duties a JP is required to perform, has been known to travel to meet with citizens unable to get to his office, to take calls 24/7, and is proud that he has utilized technology to update his office. He is also proud of the revenue his efforts have brought into the county, is excited about the future, and asked for everyone’s vote. Once the speakers had completed their speeches, President Clemons reminded everyone about the “Divine Wine Cake” auction and spoke about the Cookie Exchange event that would be happening Sunday, December 12, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Melanie Grammar then announced the names of the newly elected officers for 2022 and announced the winner of the Divine Wine Cake auction as being visitor Shelley Luther (the Republican lady from Dallas who made the news by going to jail during the Covid shutdown for defying what she believed to be an Un-Constitutional shutdown order of her hair salon.) After receiving the coveted cake, Ms. Luther then donated her prize to the President of the Open Arms Homeless Shelter, Melody Michaud. The meeting was adjourned at 7:01 p.m.

donations from their Give Back Promotion. Each year they choose a local nonprofit to receive donations. A new internet customer can offset the start-up or installation cost with a donation of paper goods and water to the homeless shelter. Water and paper goods are a daily need in the operation of the shelter. Donations greatly reduce the

operating expense of the shelter and allows funds to be used in other ways to help homeless people in Fannin County. The Give Back Promotion allows not only 903 Broadband, but the new customers, to participate and partner with Open Arms shelter to address homelessness in Fannin County. This year during the month of November new customers who donated water, paper towels, and toilet paper did not have to pay the usual installation fee for internet service. This year’s campaign was an overwhelming success. This is another example of the generosity of local business and citizens in our community.
