From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 The Christmas Story... Ever Old - Forever New
By Bro. Bill Beasley The thought behind my article this week is that whether I am sitting by my mother’s knees and listening to her read the Christmas story, from the Book of Luke in
the family Bible or reading it myself in preparation for this writing I am being blessed. The Christmas story is both old and new. It has been around a long time. And yet, it is filled with an eternal freshness. My subject for this week is “The Christmas Story Ever Old – Forever New.” I challenge you to prepare your heart for the season by reading Luke 2 from the translation of your choice. I have kept a pastor’s record through the years. And just for sharing with you are sev-
en of the 75 subject Christmas themes that I have used. The Manger Miracle Beholding the Christ Child Following Heaven’s Star Old Words For New Times Attitudes Toward His Birth Beholding Bethlehem’s Baby Christmas Truths Yes, another year has passed but the message of Christmas remains the same. My message next week will be on “Thanksgiving for Christmas.” Sometime during the latter part of my ministry, some

so they’ll have a gift to open on Christmas morning. What a wonderful gesture from the heart! But although a new basketball or skateboard is a fun thing for a child to enjoy it’s a sad fact that right here in north Texas one in four children will wake up on Christmas morning hungry. You can give so much more than a toy - you can provide a child the gift of a full tummy this

And here’s the really great part: You don’t have to brave the malls or haul your gift to a collection point, it’s as easy as sending your tax-deductible donation to us - we’ll turn your thoughtful gift into many nutritious meals for adults & children alike. Through our affiliation with the North Texas Food Bank we have access to healthy food for as little as $0.14 per pound so we can make your dollar go further than ever! shared the agreement of the Trinity of what could have been talked about the creation in Genesis 1:26 “Let us make man….” This would seem to suggest, in the Word, that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were a part of our creation. The thought also suggests that God the Father said man would sin and the Son committed Himself as the price of our redemption. Thus, when man sinned, the Father gave the promise that the seed of woman would bruise the head of the serpent. The birth of Jesus became the fulfillment of the promise. Out of the promise of grace will come my message for next week – “Thanksgiving For Christmas.”

COOKING IN FANNIN
MOM’S RUM CAKE
Preheat oven to 325°. Grease and flour one 10” tube pan. Combine cake mix and pudding mix. In another bowl, beat eggs, water, oil and rum until frothy. Add cake mix/pudding mixture and beat until well mixed. Spread pecans evenly over the bottom of the prepared pan and pour batter over pecans. Bake cake at 325° for 1 hour or until a toothpick comes out dry when inserted in the center. Allow to cool in pan for 5 minutes and remove from pan. Place in serving dish immediately, right side up. (Pecans should be on the bottom) To Make Glaze: During the last 15 to 20 minutes of baking time, combine butter or margarine, water and sugar in a sauce pan and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium and boil rapidly until it’s very thick and syrupy, stirring very frequently. The syrup must be reduced quite a bit and very thick, otherwise it will make the cake mushy. Remove from heat and add rum. While cake is still hot, poke holes all over top of cake with a toothpick, and spoon glaze over top of cake. Allow cake to sit at room temperature for one day, then refrigerate. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Small Appliances, Gadgets, Food Prep Tools Among Items To Consider The holidays are a favorite time of year for those who cook, and Christmas is an excellent time to consider getting the cook in your life a kitchen gift to enjoy and use for years to come. There are numerous items that will serve well as Christmas gifts for those who enjoy cooking. (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service photo) “While some people may think of getting a kitchen gift for Christmas as not particularly romantic, the fact is serious or aspiring cooks don’t mind – and might even prefer – getting something practical and useful to make their meal preparation easier and more enjoyable,” said Odessa Keenan, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program assistant for the agency’s Healthy Texas program.
Keenan said there is a wide variety of kitchen appliances, tools, gadgets and other items of different types, designs and costs, so it’s important to identify just what is needed and determine how much you are willing to spend. “Another thing to consider is if you can and want to personalize the gift in some way, such as gifting a wooden cutting board with the person’s name or initials on it,” she said. “There are also some colorful, interesting and fun versions of kitchen utensils or tools out there that may appeal to your cook’s personality or sense of style.” Many smaller kitchen tools and items can be used as stocking stuffers, Keenan said. “Due to their smaller size and shape, there are a number of items that will fit nicely into a
Christmas stocking,” she said. “One of the most simple and useful kitchen items is an oven rack pull-stick, which allows you to easily and safely pull the rack from your oven or toaster oven and then put it back into place. And a meat thermometer is the right size and shape, along with being a must-have for the kitchen.” Keenan said other stocking stuffers might include: Gourmet salts, sugars or spices, Oven rack pull-stick, Tongs, Microplane grater, Vegetable peeler, Meat thermometer, Whisk. “The possibilities for gifts to give the cook in your life are many and varied,” Keenan said. “But so long as whatever you choose will be of use to them and they see you took the time to find something they really wanted, they’ll appreciate the gift.”

days,” said Joyce Cavanagh, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension family and community health specialist, College Station. Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year’s Day have been identified by the National Fire Protection Association as the three days of the year during which most candle fires occur. “In addition to candle fires, electrical fires and Christmas tree fires are also possible,” Cavanagh said. “And Christmas tree fires, in particular, have the potential to do serious damage to the home or cause injury to its occupants.” She said some tips to help avoid candle and electrical fires are: — Keep candles at least 1 foot away from flammable items or surfaces.— Do not put candles directly on surfaces. Use a sturdy candle holder with a drip plate for wax.— Blow out candles when you leave the home or go to bed, and avoid using candles in the bedroom or other areas where people may fall asleep.— Replace candles before they burn all the way down or before the flame gets too close to the holder or container.— Keep any lit candles in sight and away from areas where they may be knocked over.— In the event of a power outage, use flashlights or other battery-powered lighting instead of candles.— Use electric lights tested by an independent testing laboratory and place them only where appropriate.

Mabel Adams was sitting in the day room at the Rest of Your Life retirement home when the children came in. She smiled and so did all the others in the room except for two who didn’t know what was going on. The old-timers in the home knew the kids were coming and had put up Christmas decorations around in the day room and on the doors of their own small apartments and on themselves. Mabel had been reminded several times by the staff that morning that the kids were coming over, this being necessary as Mabel’s memory isn’t what it used to be. And she put a sprig of imitation holly in
her hair and tied a red ribbon on the other side. The little girl smiled and walked over to Mabel. “Are you a grandma?” she asked. “Why, yes dear, I am.” “I brought you a present, Grandma,” she said, handing a box to Mabel. Mabel opened it and was delighted at the sandalwood-scented hankies inside. “Why thank you so much, Honey!” she said. “And what is your name?” “I’m Candice. I’m four.” “Well, Candice, Merry Christmas to you. Have you been here before?”
“Well … no, I guess. Mom said this is where the grandmas are and we can have fun bringing presents to the grandmas.” “I see,” Mabel said. “Well, Candice, come over here, dear, and let me give you a hug. There!” Sometimes, it isn’t the cost of the hankies, or the fun wrapping them up. Sometimes it’s just a child’s smile and a small taste of love that makes us treasure Christmas. ---------Enjoy this column? Good. 2020 Fannin County Master Gardener Training set to begin in February News Release - Fannin County- Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will host a Master Gardener training beginning in February to train new Master Gardeners! The training is set to begin February 18, 2020 and will take place from 9:00 am- 4:00 pm for nine consecutive weeks and conclude on April 14, 2020. The trainings will be held at the Derrell Hall Education Center, 2505 North Center Street in Bonham, TX, 75418. The training will cover cultural practices and environmental considerations in the cultivation and management of ornamental and flowering plants, vegetable gardens, fruits and nuts, turf and landscape plants. The line-up of speakers and topics for this training is outstanding! As a trainee, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from some state, and world renown horticulturist in their area of expertise! The purpose of the Master Gardener Program is to support and assist the Extension office in providing information on proper gardening practices to the
community. While Master Gardeners benefit personally from participation, it should be understood, the principal criterion for acceptance into the program is the availability and willingness of the individual to volunteer to help county residents. Upon completion of the training, the trainee will be asked to contribute a minimum of 50 hours of work through the county Extension office during the 12 months following the instructional period. After completing 50 volunteer hours of volunteer service, the trainee will then become a “Certified Master Gardener”. It should also be understood that you are not limited to 50 hours of volunteer time. Our interest in selecting individuals for this program goes far beyond the first year of training. We need people who are willing to commit to continued participation as experienced Master Gardeners. There are exciting projects that have and will be taking place over the next several years within Fannin County Extension. To
mention a few, in 2019, the Fannin County Master Gardeners designed and constructed a 2500-gallon Rainwater Collection Unit on the Derrell Hall Education Center and hosted a workshop at the completion of the construction. The “Backyard Project” is a demonstration project in the planning phase at the Derrell Hall Education Center that will heavily involve Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners plan and host educational events throughout the year. The largest event hosting over 400 people each year is the Master Gardener Home, Lawn, and Garden Expo that takes place each spring is one of the many educational efforts of the Fannin County Master Gardeners. If you are interested in attending this training and being a part of this great organization that is under the direction of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, we invite you to call 903583-7453 or email cody. maxwell@ag.tamu.edu to obtain an application for the 2020 Fannin County Master Gardener Training.

The Real Christmas Story
Luke 2 King James Version 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city
of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and
wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was
with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and
Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and The Government shall be upon His Shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty GOD, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His Government and peace there shall be no end, upon the Throne of David, and upon His Kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will perform this” (Isaiah 9:6-7).

12/17/19 Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? 12/17/19
Happy Hour 2-6 p.m
Good question, especially if you can even remember
when candy was a penny. That is what a small group of homeschoolers from Fannin County learned
over a seven week course. Studying the Book Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? By Richard J. Maybury, 6 students ages 13 to 17 met each Monday at the Bonham Public Library to better understand economics and the reason we cannot find penny candy in the stores. The students were divided into two groups and were asked to put a business model together. They would then sell their product for 5 hours on one specific day. Each group had to pick a place where they could set up and sell their product. They were required to mar-

ket, get investors and then pay back investors at the 12/17/19 end of the day. The group with the biggest profit won! The profits were then turned over to the charity of their choice. Team Hot Chocolate raised $125.00 and donated it to the Bonham Fire Department. Leah Troutz from team hot chocolate said “The fire department does so much for Bonham and they are great examples of serving others, we want to do something

Tyler Moore from team coffee said “We loved the fact that the shelter would be available for families during the cold winter months.” A special thanks goes out to Fix and Feed of Bonham and to Tractor Supply of Bonham for letting us set up and the Bonham Public Library for allowing us to squish into a room to hold class.

So why not investigate the handmade items from the Creative Arts Center as a solution? Since the artists who sell their wares at the center are each a cottage business, purchasing locally boosts the economy in Bonham and Fannin County. There is nowhere else to buy hand-carved wooden “treenware” (spoons, ladels, spatulas, etc.), hand carved wooden boxes and cutting boards, pottery, stained-glass and glass for the home, paintings, sculptures, beautiful items for your decor, jewelry made by local silversmiths, coppersmiths and other artisans - the list is quite long when it comes to gift purchases available, and the quality of the gifts will be appreciated by any recipient. Christmas ornaments and other seasonal decorations are also available, hand painted or handcrafted from a variety of materials. Just the right painting or framed photograph will brighten up an office wall or fill a space in a living room and is far more meaningful

Santa Letters From The Past Dear Santa Claus: 12/17/19
My sister and brother are very glad to hear that we will get some presents anyhow. The fact is that my papa is out of work and we did not expect to get anything for Christmas. My brother, 7 years old, wants a Teddy bear; Molly wants a pair of skates, aged 9 years; Kitty wants a toy grocery store, aged 7, and Katherine, aged 6, wants a Teddy bear. If I am not asking too much of you, I would like a pair of skates. My age is 13 years of age. If I am not asking too much and hope you will not forget us. We remain, your firm believers,
Dear Santa Claus, State street: I am a little girl, 7 years old, and I’m afraid that you won’t call at our house, because we are so poor. Father has to work hard all day and mother is sick and says we needn’t expect anything. Please when you are on the west side if you will just call and leave a little book or something I will be much obliged. You can’t come down the chimney, because it is too small, but I will open the door if you knock. Ada Santa Clause -North Pole Bring Jim a drum, horn, airplane, if he is a good boy, and an elephant.
Dear St. Nicholas, Bring me a tin horn. My grandma says 12/17/19 she is afraid I will wake her up with it, but I promise not to. I would also like a gocart. Yours affectionately, Willie

Volunteers Needed at the Children’s Center 12/17/19
Press Release - More volunteers are needed at the Fannin County Children’s Center. The nonprofit with a mission of promoting safety and improving the lives of abused and neglected children has several different roles that volunteers can fill. The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is one program of the Children’s Center. Compassionate CAC volunteers are needed to help supervise the children, youth and families who are waiting in the reception area for therapy and forensic interviews. CAC Volunteers are needed primarily in the afternoons and early evening hours. Ideally, volunteers will work the same 2 or 3 hour shift each week. The Rainbow Room is a resource room stocked with new clothes, shoes,
diapers and other items needed by the children served by CASA, CAC and Child Protective Services. Rainbow Room volunteers help sort, organize and keep the room neat and tidy. Volunteers are also needed for the Hospitality Team. These volunteers help periodically by making food for the various meetings and trainings held at the center. Office volunteers are needed periodically to help answer phones, greet visitors to the center, get newsletters ready for mailing and other light office work. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, complete a volunteer application, have clear background checks and complete volunteer orientation. Contact Andrea Lappin at andrea@ fanninccc.org or (903)

583-4339 for questions or to apply. Volunteers are also needed to be CASA advocates for children in foster care. These volunteers visit children regularly, communicate with all the adults involved in the child’s life, prepare court reports and attend court hearings to advocate for the child’s best interest. The next training class for CASA advocates will start in February 2020. CASA volunteer applications must be completed online and are accepted at any time. For questions about becoming a CASA volunteer advocate, contact Amanda McDonald at amanda@fanninccc.org or (903) 583-4339. Rep. Ratcliffe U.S.-Taiwan cyber amendment passes House in NDAA 12/19/17
WASHINGTON – Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) issued the following statement on the House passage of his U.S.-Taiwan cybersecurity collaboration legislation, which was included as an amendment in the FY 2020 NDAA: “The United States’ relationship with Taiwan is an indispensable component in our efforts to maintain peace and stability in Asia and across the globe. And in today’s digital age, this relationship should include a strong and robust partnership on cybersecurity.
Over the past few years, China has clearly demonstrated its capability and willingness to conduct cyber-attacks against our country, such as the statesponsored economic espionage that led to the indictment of Beijing-linked hackers last year. “On top of implementing strict retaliatory measures to deter this malicious behavior, we should work proactively with our allies to establish preventative defense plans that leverage cybersecurity sharing strategies. Taiwan is uniquely

positioned to partner with us on our efforts to combat cyber-attacks, and this amendment will help us move closer to enhancing our collaboration in this space, so that we stay ahead of our adversaries.”

It seeks to strengthen the US-Taiwan cyber partnership, especially in our efforts to combat foreign adversaries.

Decking Most All: Low-scoring first defeat anomaly in DC’s blowout-win-replete start

Bonhi HFC search enters callback interview stage By Rich Hilliard BONHAM -- Callback interviews will occur early during the week of Dec. 16 -- the next stage in the search for the new head football coach for Class 3A-I Bonham High School. The second round of interviews will be for only some of the 10 candidates who interviewed Dec. 10-11 in consideration for the position before a selection committee composed of five Bonham Independent School District administrators. A recommendation will be presented to the BISD board of trustees as soon as possible. A January start is planned for the new coach, if his previous school district will allow. “My top priority is to select a gentleman who wants to Bleed Purple,” said Bonham ISD superintendent Kelly Trompler, “and is excited about growing our football program into a playoff contender in the very near future. “I am excited about the applicant pool,” she said, “and am confident we will have our next Bonham Purple Warrior head football coach in place soon!” Bonham received and reviewed 116 applications for the position, with 16 applicants being screened by phone. The position became available on Nov. 14 with the res-
loss will be an anomaly. Dodd City entered the game at 13-0 -- winning by an average of almost 45 points -getting double-digit scoring multiple times from six players along the way. Six of those victories came last month en route to winning the Saltillo Tournament
ignation of John Fish after two seasons at the helm. Fish, who is now an associate pastor at Genesis Metro Church in Frisco, coached Bonham in 2018 to its most regular season wins in 17 years and a bi-district advance. In 2018, Bonham finished 8-3 overall -- winning eight consecutive games during the regular season -- and qualified for the playoffs as the 5-1 runnerup in District 5-3A-I. It marked the first eight-win regular season for the Purple Warriors since finishing with the same record in 2001 under Ronnie Hill. The 2018 campaign also equated Bonham’s first winning overall season record since an 8-4 area finalist effort in 2005 under alumnus Larry McFarlin. In 2019, the Purple Warriors finished 1-9 overall and winless in 5-3A-I play -- during a rebuilding year after graduating 22 seniors which included a first-team all-state quaterback. Bonham will remain in 3A-I for football during the 2020 and 2021 seasons and learn its new district alignment on Feb. 3. Having submitted a 499 average daily membership, Bonham will again be amongst the largest schools in the classification.
Dodd City junior Journie Hilliard (21) has most frequently scored in double digits during the first month of the basketball season, after adding an all-state volleyball selection to her numerous awards since starting high school. Following a final non-district game at Sam Rayburn on Dec. 10, the Lady Hornets will start District 23-1A action by playing host to Ector on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Dodd City will be vying this season for an eighth-con-

Savoy’s Popowski district’s top punter By Rich Hilliard Senior Jake Popowski made the first team as a punter to lead Savoy in the All-District 9-1A-I football awards for 2019. Popowski also placed on the second team as a running back for the Cardinals, who finished 0-6 while dealing with graduation losses and injuries which prompted the cancellation of a few games. Senior Cole Keen also made the second team at nose guard for Savoy. Senior Braeden Dillon of Savoy garnered an honorable mention.

2020 Fannin County 6/11/19 Master Gardener Training set to begin in February
News Release - Fannin County- Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will host a Master Gardener training beginning in February to train new Master Gardeners! The training is set to begin February 18, 2020 and will take place from 9:00 am4:00 pm for nine consecutive weeks and conclude on April 14, 2020. The purpose of the Master Gardener Program is to support and assist the Extension office in providing information on proper gardening practices to the community. After completing 50 volunteer hours of volunteer service, the trainee will then
become a “Certified Master Gardener”. To mention a few, in 2019, the Fannin County Master Gardeners designed and constructed a 2500-gallon Rainwater Collection Unit on the Derrell Hall Education Center and hosted a workshop at the completion of the construction.
Oh Deer While stopped at a gas station, a Lavaca County game warden noticed multiple elk antlers and legs sticking up from the bed of a pickup truck. The warden pulled up and congratulated the man icing the animals down and saw two whitetail deer. The man
then told the warden about the high-fenced ranch the animals had been taken from. The ranch happened to be one that the warden investigated last year due to multiple hunters on the ranch hunting without licenses. After a short discussion, it was determined that the man’s girlfriend, who was also on location, had killed one of the bull elk and had not purchased a hunting license in five years. The animal was seized, cleaned and donated to a local charity organization. Case pending.

Mistaken Bacon A Gaines/Andres County game warden received a call from a landowner about possible spotlights on her land. After making his way to the property, the warden approached two individuals that were hunting around a wheat circle. They claimed they were pig hunting and had harvested a pig earlier. The warden asked the subjects if he could see the pig they shot and it was determined that it was not a pig, but a javelina. Charges and restitution are pending.

Texoma Council of Governments Receives National Association of Development Organizations 2019 Impact Award WASHINGTON, DC – Texoma Council of Governments, based in Sherman, Texas, has received three 2019 Aliceann Wohlbruck Impact Awards from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) for collaborative initiatives including: Texoma Behavioral Health Leadership Team, Getting Ahead, and Fannin County Food Project. Texoma Behavioral Health Leadership Team Qualitative and quantitative data analyzed by TCOG in order to identify and address root causes of poverty in Texoma revealed that access to mental healthcare is a top need in the Texoma region. Recognizing the negative impact that limited access to adequate behavioral healthcare has on the local economy and its relation to impoverished families, TCOG joined a collaborative effort by safety-net community leaders and representatives in the Grayson County area of North Texas to form the Texoma Behavioral Health Leadership Team (TBHLT). The TBHLT is committed to improving the behavioral health and wellbeing for all people who reside in the region. In this role, the TBHLT envisions a region where people live and thrive in communities that promote and support behavioral health and wellness. Members represent a wide-spectrum of services, projects and partners who are invested in assuring that all regional residents have the opportunity for a healthy and happy life. Members of this project include leaders from the judicial system, law enforcement, area businesses, schools, colleges, emergency healthcare, behavioral health services, funders and caregivers. Currently, the TBHLT is committed to promoting behavioral health in Texoma through the following initiatives: Access to Care, Stigma Reduction, and Jail Diversion. TCOG leadership provided critical support in the formation of the TBHLT and continues to provide organizational support by allocating resources in the development of the TBHLT’s communication strategies
including website, social media and resource/collateral development, and direct support in removing the image of what a person looks like experiencing mental health issues as that is a critical component to meeting the needs of improved behavioral health in Texoma. Furthermore, TCOG serves functionally in the development of workplace inclusion strategies to encourage the implementation of comprehensive employee assistance programs and mental health first aid training by employers for their workers in all industries within the community. Getting Ahead Poverty in the Texoma area, that includes Grayson, Fannin and Cook County, hovers at 13.4%, higher than the national average. While unemployment remains low, many struggle to make ends meet due to lack of affordable housing, scarce public transportation, and wage scales below livable levels. Poverty is especially prevalent among single parent households, the elderly and people of color. Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) provides needs-based support in many forms, including subsidized housing, utility assistance, case management, etc., but empowerment programs that actually help individuals and families overcome poverty remain scarce. In March 2017, TCOG launched Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’-by-World, a new program in partnership with MasterKey Ministries of Grayson County, designed to help impoverished individuals living in unstable situations build economic stability for themselves, and in doing so affect a better future for the communities TCOG serves. Getting Ahead is a 16week program based on aha Process!’ Bridges Out of Poverty framework that leads participants (called Investigators) on a journey to understand the causes of poverty and learn the resources needed for stability (including not just financial, but emotional, mental, physical, support systems, motivation and persistence, and others). Investigators take a deep and personal inventory

of their current resources and those of their community and learn abstract thinking needed for goal-setting and planning for a better future story. Getting Ahead helps participants learn to step out of “tyranny of the moment” thinking in which a multitude of problems demand their attention daily. This experience traps low-income individuals in the world of stress and hopelessness with no time to plan for their future. From day one, Investigators apply this newly learned method of thinking so that they improve their ability to make well-thought out decisions and consider critical possibilities. Getting Ahead classes are limited to 12 participants and facilitated by 2 or 3 certified facilitators who guide the class through critical thinking skills and their own investigation of the roles language (formal and casual), time management, hidden rules of class, and social capital play in escaping poverty to succeed in middle class and wealth cultures. It brings the community into the class, with businesses, organizations and selected individuals bringing meals on class night and getting to know investigators and their children, and participating in a Community Assessment night where investigators quiz local experts about community resources. Fannin County Food Project The objective of the Fannin County Food Project is to provide food assistance to food-deprived or foodinsecure individuals. As determined through phone call statistics and community needs assessment plans, Fannin County (NE Texas) has a great need for food assistance. This project has prompted new collaborations with existing food pantries, other food assistance entities, and community entities/ individuals with similar goals and vision. Most notably, the North Texas Food Bank’s Mobile Pantry unit has made a great commitment to provide fresh produce to the residents of Fannin County. Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) served as a convening conduit of stakeholders in the project and facilitated the planning meetings for the development of the Fannin County Food Project. Our facilitation provided a means to develop and implement transportation mechanisms with partner agencies to and from the distribution site for individuals with identified needs. The first major mobile produce distribution reached 170 households (approximately 426 individuals). This project established multiple distribution sites within Fannin County and a fixed transportation mechanism for individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend the distribution events. NADO is a Washington, DCbased membership association of regional development organizations that promote programs and policies that strengthen local governments, communities, and economies
through regional cooperation, program delivery, and comprehensive strategies. The association’s Impact Awards program recognizes regional development organizations and their partners for improving the economic and community competitiveness of our nation’s regions and local communities. Award-winning projects were honored during NADO’s 2019 Annual Training Conference, held October 1922 in Reno, NV. The 2019 class of award recipients consists of 100 projects from 66 organizations spanning 24 states. These projects are presented in an interactive “Story Map” developed by NADO and CivicLens that includes project summaries and partners. The Story Map is available online at: https://www.nado.org/ impactawards/. “The Aliceann Wohlbruck Impact Awards program is an opportunity each year for NADO to publicly recognize the important services that regional development organizations deliver to their local communities,” said 20182019 NADO President Scott Koons, executive director of the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council, located in Gainesville. “The projects awarded have made significant impacts on their regions and demonstrate the diversity of programs and resources provided by regional development organizations across the country.” The NADO Impact Awards are presented in honor of the late Aliceann Wohlbruck who was NADO’s first executive director and served 24 years as a tireless champion for regional approaches to economic development in rural communities. For more information about these award-winning projects, contact Sean Norton, Public Information & Media Manager, (903) 813-3514 or snorton@tcog.com. Since 1967 the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) has provided advocacy, education, networking, and research for the national network of 540 regional development organizations. NADO members provide professional, programmatic, and technical assistance to over 2,300 counties and 15,000 municipalities. The Texoma Council of Governments is a voluntary association of the local governments in Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson counties. Established in 1968, Texoma Council of Governments promotes economy and efficiency in the coordinated planning and development of the tri-county region through its community and economic development activities. ’Tis the Season for Rainbow Trout Stocking in Texas AUSTIN – It’s the most wonderful time of the year for anglers of all ages as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department begins stocking thousands of easy to catch, tasty rainbow trout in 185 ponds, lakes and rivers across the state Nov. 26. For urban and suburban families in major cities, Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes offer some of the best opportunities to catch rainbow trout this winter. TPWD manages 18 Neighborhood Fishin’ lakes statewide in most major urban centers, including Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. These lakes are stocked with rainbow trout every two weeks and offer plenty of amenities so that family members of all ages can enjoy a fun and relaxing day fishing and connecting in nature. Families looking to spend a day or weekend exploring a Texas State Park can add fishing to their list of activities, as more than 15 state parks throughout the state will receive periodic stockings of rainbow trout this winter. Many state parks offer excellent fishing amenities such as fishing piers and shoreline access, cleaning stations, and equipment rentals for tackle and kayaks or canoes. As a bonus, state parks are the only locations in Texas that anglers can fish for free
without a fishing license. For anglers interested in tailrace fishing, TPWD will be stocking rainbow trout below several dams and spillways, which often have very cool water and provide excellent conditions for trout fishing. This year, TPWD will stock rainbow trout into the Canyon Tailrace on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake, the Lewisville Tailrace located on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River below Lake Lewisville, and the Possum Kingdom Tailrace on the Brazos River below Possum Kingdom Lake. Other stocking locations include dozens of local city and county managed park ponds, the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center casting pond, and several rivers including the Frio, South Llano and Guadalupe rivers and the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. Rainbow trout can be caught on a variety of baits and lures. Depending on an angler’s experience level and interest, they can be caught using simple, light tackle or on handtied flies using a fly rod. Other tips to consider when trout fishing include arriving early to stocking sites on stocking days, maintaining a safe and courteous distance from fellow anglers, keeping an array of baits and lures nearby and having ice available when
harvesting trout to keep fish fresh. TPWD will be stocking a total of 343,650 rainbow trout in Texas from Nov. 26 through the beginning of March. Because rainbow trout are unable to survive in Texas after the winter, anglers are encouraged to keep up to their daily bag limit of five trout. Rainbow trout are an attractive, tasty fish found on many restaurant menus, and anglers can easily find recipes to prepare these fish online. In Texas, children under 17 fish for free, but a fishing license with a freshwater fishing endorsement is required for adults in the family. An angler fishing in a Community Fishing Lake or from a dock, pier or jetty within a Texas State Park may use no more than two poles. The statewide bag limit is five trout, except on parts of the Guadalupe River where special limits are in effect. The dates and locations are subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Be sure to check the 201920 Trout Stocking Schedule online before you go fishing to confirm the stocking date, check fishing regulations and to find other winter trout stocking program angling tips.
