Frauds and Scams

This is the time of year that all manners of frauds and schemes become more intense and if you can name it someone is going to try it. The holiday season, especially Christmas is a time that phone calls and letters come wanting money for one cause or another. Some are valid and some are not, be careful who you are giving your money too.

Frauds and Scams have been around from the beginning of time in one form or another and with the increase in technology on the internet, Facebook, Craig’s list and other selling mediums it has become a major problem for law enforcement. Each year mil-

lions of citizens are defrauded or scammed out of billions of dollars through one action or another.

Someone wants to sell an expensive item on Craig’s List or another forum, a “buyer” contacts the seller and they agree on a price. The “Buyer” instructs the sell that he will put a certified check overnight to the seller then the seller is supposed to immediately send the item overnight to an address. Shipment is made, the happy seller goes to the bank and cashes the check, happy with his/her money. Two or three weeks go by and the bank calls the seller, the check has bounced. Oh my goodness it was phony cashiers check!

Remember what I said about technology? This is easier than counterfeiting money. Law enforcement report is made, local

law enforcement go to the address and find an empty lot or abandoned house. The “buyer” has the schedule of the USPS or about when FedEx or UPS hits the neighborhood and is there waiting to take possession of the package.

You get an email stating that your XXXXX account is being updated and they need your password, social security number, checking account number and PIN, phone number, date of birth, etc. . They want a lot of information and with just this they can have your entire life in 10 minutes or less.

If you are buying something on line make sure that the description matches the item. You can be reasonably safe with a company like AMAZON and others on new items, but if you’re using EBay or one of the other sites, ask lots of questions.

These criminals target the elderly and shut-in’s a great deal. Check comes in the mail

stating that you have just won a sizable amount of money, to claim this you need to procure $$$ worth of gift cards, maybe from Walmart or some other chain store and mail them to a specific address. IT IS A FRAUD! If you are a cashier at a business that sells gift cards please question anyone purchasing a large sum of money in cards, especially older customers. You do not have to press for personal information but do ask if they are sure what they are purchasing the cards for.

If you receive a check for a large sum of money that you have no idea about, the letter will tell you that you have won, inherited, or part of a large settlement and the tell you that you need to buy gift cards in the amount of $$ and to call a 1-800 to receive the money and someone will tell you where to send the money to and send them immediately. The check will be on an out

of state bank , call 411 for the city the bank is in then call the bank and tell them about the check. DO NOT CASH THAT CHECK! They will take the information, and if not already active, they will call the FBI to start an investigation.

A contractor shows up at

your door wanting to roof your house at a discounted price or do work inside the house. Again usually elderly and shut ins are the targets for these criminals.

Dogs Are Den Animals

It’s not unusual for me to run into dog owners who feel like crating their dog is comparable to using a cage, or they tell me “Fluffy didn’t like her crate”, and they just give up on the idea. The problem with his thinking is that a crate is the most natural thing in the world for your dog to love. Because the domestic dog is just a few chromosomes away from being a wolf, he is hardwired to love a den-like structure. Show me a dog who doesn’t have a crate, and I’ll show you a little guy who demonstrates “denning” behavior anyway. He’ll get under tables or beds, or find his favorite little corner. When the mother wolf goes about her business, she leaves those puppies in the den for their own safety. As the pups learn more about basic ground rules and so on, they get

more and more freedom over time. - One of my first gurus, Barbara Woodhouse, who had a TV series about training dogs in the 80s and who wrote a number of books on the subject, was using orange crates with straw in them as crates, long before they were a commercial idea.

Perhaps the most important aspect of crating, is that a crate is absolutely the ticket for housebreaking, because dogs have an aversion to soiling their den. But even though Max has wolf in his DNA, it’s important to proceed gingerly when acclimating your puppy (or any dog) to a crate. You can’t just throw him in there and expect him to like it. - It’s wise to get a crate just big enough for Max to lay down in and turn around, because if a crate is too big, some puppies will choose to pee on one end, and sleep on the other. - Next time, more on crate training.

Frauds and Scams

Continued from Section A page 5

They want in your house to see what they can come back and steal, or if you let them do work it will be shoddy and when it falls apart they will not be anywhere around. Roofers after a hail storm come out of the wood work, ads go in the paper with a phone number, a front man comes out and the only honest thing you will hear is that the cost is going to be what the insurance check will be. Phone number is an answering service and when it rains again and the roof leaks they are gone. Be aware of whom you are dealing with…. Citizen receives a call from the IRS or the FBI stating that $$$$$ is owed on back taxes and if not paid immediately to and address(usually PO Box)

that the citizen will go to jail, they may also want you to verify your Social Security Number, date of birth and banking information. The IRS and the FBI DO NOT MAKE THOSE TYPE PHONE CALLS!

The McGruff poster list several precautions that you should be aware of, be alert and pay attention. If you are a son or daughter of an elderly person, watch over them, if you’re a parent; make sure your child is not getting into a problem area. All of these people that I have talked about are criminals, and they may not just be from this country. These are all very real scenarios that happen every day in Fannin County with millions of dollars lost to these criminals every day.

BE ALERT, PAY ATTENTION, AND IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT IS PROBABLY A FRAUD OF A SCAM. REPORT IT BEFORE YOU ARE A VICTIUM.

1. Consider and take action to approve minutes of the November 14th regular meeting: A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to approve.

2. Consider and take action to accept financial report for month ending November 30, 2022: Bonham’s Finance Supervisor Michelle Burnett began her report by noting how the first few months of a fiscal year finds the General Fund in a deficit due to the majority of the city’s revenue being generated from December

through March and concluded with the report that the 2021 Audit would be completed by the end of January. A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to accept the report.

3. Citizens Opportunity to Speak: [The City Council invites persons with comments or observations to briefly address the Council for the limited purpose of determining whether the matter should be referred to staff for study and response and/or be placed on a future meeting agenda. State law prohibits the City Council from considering deliberations on any item not listed on the posted City Council agenda]: A new resident of Bonham spoke to inquire of any plans existing to have the city council meetings recorded in the future. She also asked who the Bonham Library Board answered to regarding

book selection and other matters. City Manager Sean Pate expounded on the history of the library beginning with an ordinance created in 1968 and explained how the board is a separate entity that has a direct relationship with the Director of Library Services with the Library Director reporting to the city. Mr. Pate then explained that there is a work in progress to enable the meetings to be broadcast through the city’s website portal with the end goal to have the city council meetings recorded and uploaded to the website for view by citizens and visitors.

4. Presentation of plaque to Employee of the Quarter: Bonham’s Human Resources Director Brad Nichols announced that Bonham’s Fire Department Lieutenant Jesse Garcia, has been named the City of Bonham Employee of the 4th Quarter of 2022. He described Lt. Garcia as having been employed by the City since September of 2007. Mr. Nichols noted that Lt. Garcia started his career as a voluntary firefighter, and has continually impressed others with his work ethic, integrity and dedication. Lt. Garcia oversees training volunteer firefighters, tutors new hires for their paramedic National Registry exam and continuously goes above and beyond for the department, the City of Bonham and citizens.

5. Consider and take action to approve a SUP/Zoning Change request for PID #83431, located on the north side of Old Ector Rd across from Sid and Oldham St, from Local Business to Planned Development: Bonham’s Director of Community Development Mark Kinnaird explained how the owners of the property have plans for single family residential development as well as multi-family residential. He referred the council to drawings of plans provided by the owners and noted how this went before the Planning and Zoning Commission in November and how the commission’s recom-

mendation is to approve the request. A motion was then made by Councilman John Burnett to approve the request with Councilman Wayne Moore seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

6. Consider and take action to create a committee for future renaming of streets and public buildings: Mayor Compton explained how he has requested Councilman Michael Evans to head up this committee and noted Wayne Moore will also be a member of the committee. Mr. Pate began a discussion of how criteria will need to be established by the committee for the sake of uniformity. During the discussion, it was determined that the committee should also be comprised of two Bonham citizens and one more council member. Bonham resident Rusty Deats volunteered to be on the committee with the other citizen and council member to be determined at a later date. A motion was made by Wayne Moore to create the committee with Councilman Kevin Hayes seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

7. Consider and take action on a resolution setting date, time and place for a public hearing on the proposed annexation of approximately 3.844 acres of land in the J. Whittenburg survey, Abstract Number 1165 and located at the East side of FM 87 and County Road 1535 being PID #128769, said annexation to include a portion of FM 87 contiguous to the property and the City’s boundaries, authorizing the publication of such public hearing and directing the City Manager , or his designee, to prepare a service plan for an area that the City intends to annex into the city limits: Mr. Pate explained how this was the first step of the voluntary annexation process after which he noted a correction on the resolution from a previously set date of January 10 to January 9, 2023 for the public hearing to be scheduled on this matter. Wayne Moore made the motion to establish January 9, 2023, for the public hearing with Kevin Hayes seconding the mo-

tion which passed unanimously.

8. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance for the erection of stop signs at sixteen locations: Mayor Compton called a public hearing into order at 5:49 p.m. Bonham’s Chief of Police Mike Bankston then explained how this is a continuation of the process of addressing the need for stop signs at several intersections in the city. Most of the new signs will involve one-way traffic stops with one involving a two-way stop sign at the intersection of Agnew Street and Arledge Street. After a brief discussion on the need for these signs, Mayor Compton noted the hearing was ended at 5:52 p.m. The ordinance for the signs was then read by Sean Pate after which John Burnett made the motion to approve the ordinance with Kevin Hayes seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

9. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance requiring individuals, while on city owned property, with animals and/or pets in their possession to be responsible for picking up, containing, and disposing of defecation waste produced by such animals: Mayor Compton called a hearing into order at 5:53 p.m. after which Chief Bankston spoke on the reason this matter was being addressed. Noting how there has been many complaints of defecation waste by animals mainly on the walking track at Powder Creek Park, Chief Bankston expounded on the problem existing at other areas in the city. Sean Pate added his comments on the problem of stepping onto waste with Officer Mark Posey adding a reference to the IPMC ordinance previously adopted by the city that allows the city to act on complaints of someone’s yard that is producing an odor problem to their adjacent neighbor. Also noted was the problem of horse waste being left on streets that will be covered by this ordinance as well as a discussion on the extent this ordinance can be extended to cat owners and problems involving those waste issues. After a discussion on where signage involving this ordinance might be placed, the hearing was ended at 5:58 p.m. Mr. Pate then read the ordinance with clarification made that a penalty clause involving class C fines of up to $200.00 was written into the ordinance for violations. A motion was made by Michael Evans to approve the ordinance with Kevin Hayes seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

10. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 6:00 p.m.

I would like real make-up if Daddy lets me, a real iPhone, and a computer. Also a Barbi Food Truck that two people can sit in. I love you Santa, thank you!

Love, Remington

Dear Santa, I still wish I could fly in the sleigh with you and I want to meet Rudolph! Now about my gifts, I would like a web shooter and a toy bow. A nerf gun would great too!

Mrs. Haggard said all I need for Christmas my two front teeth! And one more thing,

I want to help you deliver the presents!!

Hi Santa, I love your reindeer and I hope I get a toy sword, gun, roller blades, web shooter

and a hover board. But what I really hope for the most is a play Indian suit. I love you Santa and I will leave you

cookies and milk and a carrot for Rudolph.

Love, Colt

Game Warden Field Notes

Does Your Mother Know

That You’re Out?

Tom Green County Game Wardens patrolled a city street late at night, when a white vehicle sped by in a 40-mph zone. The warden sped up to catch the vehicle and finally paced him at 60-mph. The warden attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver evaded. Once pursued, the suspect drove down a residential alley and crashed into a garage. The suspect abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. No one on scene was injured. Multiple agencies responded to assist with the crash and search for the suspect. During the investigation, wardens could hear the suspect’s cell phone ring over and over. Once in the vehicle, they found the cell phone connected via Bluetooth. The phone continued to ring as they gathered evidence. Eventually, wardens along with their city police counterparts answered the phone. The caller identified herself as the suspect’s mother. Believing the officers were buddies of her adult child and playing a joke on her, she identified the suspect and demanded to speak with them. Wardens explained the situation and discovered that over the years, the suspect accumulated multiple felony

warrants. Charges pending.

Don’t Fence Me In Local ranch managers notified local Polk County Game Wardens that an individual, well known in the area for stirring up trouble, trespassed on their property multiple times in the past few months. The landowner turned over footage from multiple game cameras showing the suspect riding through the property on a homemade ATV. Eventually, the ranch managers caught him in the act and tried to hold him at gunpoint. They were unsuccessful and the suspect fled into the woods, leaving behind his homemade ATV.

Concerned the trespasser was utilizing the unusual route to deal drugs in a neighboring subdivision, one of the war-

dens drove to the suspect’s home. Once there, he spotted the suspect outside with two other males. The warden requested backup from a county deputy since the suspect had a track record of fleeing law enforcement. When the deputy arrived, the suspect was working on a vehicle in the yard. Together, they questioned the suspect, who stated he was unaware that he had been trespassing. The warden informed the suspect that he was trespassing because he crossed a fence as well as other barriers into a property that did not belong to him. The suspect was then arrested without incident and booked into the county jail. Case pending.

are good mixed in with white bass biting on cut shad or on the slabs. Bass are slow at all depths. Crappie are slow.. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 61 degrees; 1.20 feet below pool. The extended warm-up has tricked the fish back into an early fall pattern, but that will not last long after the forecasted winter weather. Hybrid striper and white bass have remained good. We are seeing a lot of fish pull back onto humps and points. Slabs, spinnerbaits and swimbaits in chartreuse have been putting fish in the boat in 10-25 feet of water.

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 65 degrees. The lake has risen four feet increasing the turbidity after the recent rains. This can slow the bite. Catfish are good on cut bait. White bass are sight feeders so use white jigging spoons on humps. While the water is murky, use brightly colored jigs for the crappie. Bass are fair along grass ledges and standing timber with crankbaits.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees; 1.90 feet below pool. Catfish are

good shallow following the new water flow coming from the creeks in 3-8 feet of water with cut shad. Monsters seem to be in 25-30 feet of water.

Gizzard shad are numerous in 2-3 feet of water on secondary points and small coves. Black bass are in 5-20 feet of water on structures with Alabama rigs, swimbaits, and large spoons.

Ray Roberts FAIR. Water is clear; 56 degrees; 1.48 feet below pool. White bass are good in 37-42 feet jigging with slabs with a bucktail trailer. Blue and some channel catfish

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 65 degrees; 1.03 feet below pool. Striped bass are very good on humps and ledges in 10-25 feet of water with Alabama rigs, swimbaits or live bait. There is very little bird action to direct you to fish so you will need to look around. Striped bass are good on the west end of the lake near the mouth of the red. Catching them on flukes dead sticking 40-60 feet of water and live bait drifting 30-40 feet of water. Watch for gulls working and birds on the banks near deep coves. Largemouth and smallmouth are still fair on live shad catching and releasing several smaller fish with the occasional bigger fish down the bluffs on the south end of the lake. Swim baits and crankbaits are working in the backs on the rocky coves. Blue and channel catfish are good in 40-50 feet of water for smaller fish on cut shad and drifting 10-20 feet of water for big blues along the flats and mouths of the rivers. Crappie are good on deeper brush piles in 18-25 feet of water. Active fish are on top of the brush and bigger fish are holding tight to the structure.

Ina large bowl, combine Bisquick,

and

Mix just until combined to create a dough. In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon and nuts. Add 2 Tbsp melted butter and stir until moistened. Set aside. Generously flour rolling surface. Flour your hand well also!! Turn dough out onto surface and start patting

into a rectangular shape with your hand. Use a rolling pin to thin dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Do not over-roll, the dough will stick. Once rolled out, pour 3/4 c. melted butter over entire surface then spread with a pastry brush to even out and get to the edges. Sprinkle sugar/nut mixture over butter. Start rolling dough from long end. Slice into 1 inch to 1/2 inch slices. I used dental floss to slice mine. It really does work, without mushing the pastry. Transfer slices to a well greased 9X13 pan. I used a spatula to make it easier. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for 25-30 minutes, until just golden brown on tops. Combine powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until desired consistensy and drizzle over top of rolls.

I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas!

ENJOY!

Game Warden Field Notes

What Happens in Vegas ...

Patrolling for wildlife violations, Harris County Game Wardens observed a flashlight beam in the woods and a truck operating erratically on an adjacent private easement road. The wardens stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver. Wearing full camouflage, the driver exited the vehicle immediately with his hands up. What appeared to be a potential road hunting case quickly changed when the driver and their partner stated that they lived nearby and were investigating a prowler after an alert from their farm dogs. The wardens confirmed their house was located just 200 yards away from where the couple stopped. While interviewing the driver, a loaded revolver was located on the center console. A serial number check revealed that the pistol was stolen during a 2006 burglary in Las Vegas. The driver stated he couldn’t remember if he was given the pistol or purchased it but denied any knowledge that it was stolen. With no independent charges to file or evidence that the driver was involved or had knowledge of the theft, the couple were released from the scene and the pistol was seized for return to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

When Doves Cry

While patrolling late at night, a Bastrop County Game Warden heard multiple shots from a nearby property. As he arrived, a truck exited the property, and he initiated a traffic stop. He immediately recognized the driver as a convicted felon he had previously arrested twice. The driver admitted to multiple guns in the truck and claimed they belonged to the passenger. However, the passenger could not answer basic questions on the firearms like how many or what kind they were. The

warden also recovered a fish shocker in the backseat and two freshly killed mourning doves in the bed of the truck. The individuals claimed the doves had somehow fallen out of a tree and into the truck. Altogether, the warden seized seven firearms, one shocking device and two mourning doves. Dispatch confirmed one of the firearms was stolen. The male subject was arrested for unlawful possession of firearms by a felon and possessing a shocker within a half-mile from public water. The female passenger was arrested on 11 outstanding warrants.

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

After assisting with a manhunt, a Falls County Game Warden was returning home when another vehicle changed lanes abruptly, almost striking his patrol vehicle. The warden initiated his emergency lights for a traffic stop but it took almost a mile for the driver to pull over to the shoulder. Upon contact, he noticed the driver was under the influence. During the standard field sobriety test, the driver asked several times if he could just be taken home or if someone could pick him up. The warden explained that the test revealed an absolute level of intoxication (three times the legal limit) and he was going to be arrested for driving while intoxicated. The driver became very emotional and sat down on the shoulder, refusing to be placed in the patrol vehicle. With the assistance of a deputy, the warden spoke with the driver for a few minutes and the driver finally agreed to get in the deputy’s patrol vehicle. Once at the jail, staff immediately recognized the driver. Just the week before, the driver had been arrested and released for another driving while intoxicated charge.

Sunnyside Cemetery Receives Donation

Savoy Sunnyside Cemetery was started in July, 1904, with a deed from Thomas V. Gorrell and wife Ruth Ann Faubion Gorrell selling three and one half acres for $150.00 to Cemetery Trustees with S.A. Harper, W.L. Teague and H.H. Arterberry’s name on the deed. Several of the Gorrell ancestors are buried at Sunnyside today. Faubion, Chandler, Anderson, Bramlett, Young, Large, White and maybe others. The families have continued to support the cemetery through the years.

In April, 1930, Charley D. Malone and wife Ellen Elizabeth Rhudy Malone sold two more acres of land for $200.00 to the cemetery Trustees with H.H. Arterberry’s name on the deed. Many of the ancestors of these are also buried at the cemetery.

In October, 1997, Bill Steedman and wife Judy Redwine Steedman donated 1.326 acres making a total of 6.826 acres.

In late 2020 a survey was made by Sanderson Survey

to add an additional 0.520 acres making a total acreage for the cemetery of 6.923 acres which was put under one plat.

During all these years so many people have contributed to the upkeep of the cemetery. Some of the ones who spent much of their time, money and love for the community were Claude and Marie Strickland, Brown Bibby, Betty Dodson and Bill Bibby. Over the years the Bomar’s, Bibby’s, Dodson’s, Arterberry’s, Stroud’s and so many others have contributed large amounts of money in their wills for the cemetery upkeep. Brent Frailicks has donated his time and music for annual fundraisers. A member of the Chandler family trimmed all the trees and continually picks up trash or anything else needed. And this year Jeff Frances’ company donated $20,000.00 to build a Pavilion at the cemetery.

This week another “keeper” of the cemetery, who is a descendant of the above people,

Citizens of Heaven

Christians have a fellowship with God as His family. Paul reminds Christians that, “therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19). Christians are citizens of the greatest country, “a better country, that is, an heavenly” (Hebrews 11:16).

Being a citizen of Heaven is a source of real joy. Jesus told his disciples not to rejoice because of the miraculous, “but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). What a country!

Being a citizen of Heaven promises a place of permanent Residence. We are looking forward to Heaven. Christ taught his followers that “In my Father’s house

are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:2). There we will be for all eternity.

Being a citizen of Heaven encourages us to live properly. As those that have been raised from baptism, “we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Paul stated that “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1). The Philippians brethren received the message “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).

Being a citizen of Heaven provides a glorious inheritance. In the ‘sermon on the mount’ as recorded by Matthew, the Messiah charges us, “Lay not up for your-

Fannin County

selves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:19-20). Peter reminds us that Christians have “an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

Being a citizen of Heaven reminds us of the registry in Heaven that is kept of the names of the citizens. No bad or evil thing will be in Heaven. John records that, “there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:27).

HG girls reach 14-2A hoops having already surpassed ‘21-’22 win total

Early results have been promising for Class 2A Honey Grove’s Lady Warriors to start the 2022-23 girls’ basketball season.

A week into December, they had already surpassed their 11-win total from last season.

A 40-37 home non-district win on Dec. 6 over 2A Tioga improved Honey Grove’s overall record to 13-4 un-

der new head coach and alum Gabe Lane.

Winning the North Hopkins Tournament on Dec. 10 increased it to 174, heading into 14-2A play.

District play begins this month for the Lady Warriors who have been favored to finish third in 14-2A in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ pre-district predictions -meaning Honey Grove’s first girls’ basketball postseason trip since 2020.

Dodd City’s Mauppin to run XC, play softball for East Central

DODD CITY -- Senior Lindsey Mauppin’s high school career has taken her many directions across Texas.

It has frequently been south -four advances to State in cross country, a couple in softball and once in girls’ basketball.

While determining where she would continue her athletic career beyond high school -- ideally, she hoped, in cross country and softball -- it has also even taken her west.

The opportunity to do both led her north -- and across the Red River -- to East Central University in Ada, Okla.

“I’ve always wanted to play softball, but I love cross country, too,” said Mauppin, who announced her decision on

Dec. 12 during a signing ceremony in the Dodd City ISD west gymnasium.

“ECU gave me the option to do both,” she said. “It made it easy. I didn’t have to give anything up to go there.

“It’s an amazing opportunity. I’m excited.”

Like the last two softball seasons, when Mauppin has either pitched or played shortstop when not in the circle, she will likely have multiple roles to play for ECU.

“[The coach] is looking to use me as a pitcher,” said Mauppin, “but as long as I can hit, I’ll have a place on the field.”

Handling both roles has led to success for Dodd City and her the last two softball seasons.

As a sophomore, she started the Class 1A State softball

championship game in the circle and got the win, as the Lady Hornets won their first title in the sport. The effort

ors from TGCA and the Texas Sports Writers Association at shortstop and newcomer of the year status in District 15-2A. for the 2021 season.

Mauppin helped Dodd City last spring to reach the 1A State softball semifinals and garnered individual notoriety for the 2022 season: 1A all-state status again from TGCA and TSWA, a spot on the TGCA Red 1A-4A all-star team and a 15-2A first-team infield selection.

She will also bring a successful high school cross country resume to ECU.

Mauppin won the 23-1A girls’ individuals competition the last two seasons, placed in the Top 10 all four years in the regional races and twice -10th and 11th place, as a sophomore and senior, respectively

-- finished amongst the best during her four 1A State races.

“It’s great, being her dad and coach, to see her hard work pay off [with this signing],” said Bruce Mauppin, Dodd City’s superintendent, cross country coach and softball manager during Lindsey’s first three high school seasons.

“I’ve told her the work is just beginning,” he said. “You are basically starting over.”

Though her high school cross country career has ended, Mauppin still has a few other sports in which to excel in the coming months.

“I still want to go as far as we can and get back to State in softball. and at least to the regional tournament in basketball,” she said. “I want to go as far as we can -- get some more bling.”

Bonham hitter Alli Kirkpatrick received the allstate honor for the secondstraight season in Class 3A.

Kirkpatrick, an Angelo State University signee as a setter, also claimed one of 20 spots on the 202223 TGCA 1A-4A Legacy Team. She totaled 1,939

kills and 1,375 digs during four seasons for Bonham.

Setter Brianna Rodriguez garnered an all-state honor in 1A after helping Dodd City this fall win the District 19-1A title and reach the regional quarterfinals in the sport for the second time in the last three seasons. She averaged 28 assists.
