From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17 Missing the Messiah

By Bro. Bill Beasley

The Christmas season has always been a joyous time in our family; we have found it so for several reasons. Both my wife and I were reared in Christian homes and we have been sure to provide a Christian atmosphere in ours. We have pointed out the reason for the season. In addition, both my wife and I were Christmas babies. She was born December 24 and my

date of birth was December 28. These extras added to a festive time. For yet another reason, our only birth child has a December birthday also. The month of December gives us an opportunity to renew our gratitude for Christmas. My thought for this week – Don’t Miss the Messiah. A couple of weeks ago as I began my preparation for this column I found this little story that caught my attention and

gave me my thought for this moment. It was in a book written by a personal friend. The book entitled “Daily News from the Good News.” (Dr. Allen Reed). On December 19, 1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright made their first flight. It lasted 12 seconds and lifted off to an altitude of 120 feet. Upon landing, this is the telegram that Wilbur sent to his sister Katherine “We have flown for 12 seconds. Will be home for Christmas.” The story was given to the newspaper. The editor placed it on page 6. Its headline said – “Wright Broth-

Miss the Messiah. On the first Christmas, others missed the Messiah’s . . birth: the innkeeper, Herod, and the priests. It has been suggested that these are representations of the state, the home, and the church. These are busy times as we ready for Christmas Day. Police Captain Instructor Amid the decorations, the

6:00 PM WASHINGTON – Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) issued the following statement on his vote against the impeachment of President Trump: “In a betrayal of the Constitution, Democrats finally got what they’ve been gunning for since the very day President Trump was duly elected to serve in the Oval Office. Despite failing miserably in their prolonged, desperate campaign to frame him for crimes he didn’t commit, they

moved forward with a vote to remove a sitting president from office based on nothing more than their personal and political opposition. “This is the thinnest, fastest and weakest impeachment our country has ever seen – rooted in a congratulatory phone call where there are no crimes alleged, where there is no victim, and where Democrats themselves could never decide what to even accuse the president of doing wrong.

Where Is My Time?

The Founders intended impeachment to be used for actions so extraordinary that it would happen only three times in almost 2 1/2 centuries. Alexander Hamilton warned of impeachment being used politically by the party that had the most votes Today’s impeachment is the Founders’ worst nightmare. “When voters go to the polls next November, I hope they’ll hold Democrats accountable for wasting countless

how much more we have to commit and when the project is going to be done. He stated that the commissioners are in charge of this project and it is up to them whether this project is successful or not. He hopes that it defines the county and doesn’t destroy it. Also speaking to the commissioners, Barbara McCutcheon stated she has worked on the courthouse project since 2007. The commissioners are the elected officials of Fannin County and she supports the commissioners in the decision they make and is in favor of doing whatever needs to be done to get the courthouse project completed. Commissioner Magness also spoke and stated that he understands what Mr. Glenn was saying and also other people with their opinions of the courthouse project, but like Ms. McCutcheon stated, the commissioners were elected to oversee the county. We are as concerned about finances and money as much as the citizens of Fannin County. He is proud to hear Mr. McLiney say that the county finances are in extremely good shape. Mr. Lackey said he has heard the stories of the past when the treasurer had to worry about covering payroll for the week. We are not like that anymore. We’ve done a good job of being very conservative which puts us in the position to be able to do today what we are doing. He believes this is the right decision. We cannot let the courthouse just sit there and fall down. The courthouse is the hub of the county; it is for the entire county, not just Bonham - for every citizen of the county. Yes, it is costing us more money than we thought it would, but I believe in 10 years no one will remember what

Judge Moore also 8/10/10 spoke and stated that he has talked with people in every town all over the county and he has never had anyone tell him no, we do not want the courthouse finished. By starting this process now, the money will be available in March, which is the time when the money will be needed to keep everything moving at the courthouse. He said to be sure and look at the courthouse when you drive by. In the next month, you are going to see some amazing changes at the courthouse which includes the beginning of the rock work on the exterior. Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Self seconded.

McLiney with SAMCO Capital stated that6/20/17 he represents the county when the county markets bids for bonds. He explained the process of marketing bonds: The Notice of Intention Resolution is to authorize commissioners’ court to borrow up to $9.9 million for courthouse improvements. This will be a third set of bonds for this project. The resolution will be published 2 weeks in a row in the legal public paper and also posted on Fannin County’s website prior to the sale to inform the citizens of the county’s intent. On February 18, 2020 bids will be received from the municipal bond world throughout the country. This was very successful a couple of years ago and he expects it to be successful again in February 2020. He stated that the interest rate market remains extremely low so borrowing costs will remain low, Fannin County’s financials remain extremely strong, and growth in the county will keep the bond rating strong and will allow us to get lots of interest on these bonds - the more interest, the lower the interest rate. At a very manageable rate, we can borrow the money, complete the courthouse project and in 3-5 years the tax rate may be lower than today due to the projected 10-12% growth rate of Fannin County. After Mr. McLiney completed his presentation, Milton Glenn spoke to the commissioners and stated that Fannin County is at a crossroads - this will define the county or destroy the county. ing dumped on a county road. Wished everyone a Merry Christmas and to enjoy their family. Commissioner Lackey: Have a good Christmas and time spent with family. We will be spraying some roads with black tar the first week of January; try to not drive through it if possible, but if you have to and tar gets on your vehicle we will clean it off. This tar has to be put down when it

is cold not hot; It seals the road and extends the life of the road. Judge Moore: We are working on the EMS situation in which we need more coverage for the county. We are weighing different options with the City to come up with a solution. He expressed his thoughts on what is going to happen to Honey Grove when the two lakes are finished since Honey Grove will be in the center of the lakes. A lot of things are happening in the county and no one can predict what is going to happen in the future, but if anyone has any concerns or questions, or notices things that need to happen, contact us. Water is still our main issue at this time. We need to get water along Hwy. 121 in the south part of the county. Judge Moore also commended county employees for their hard work and dedication to serve the public, wished everyone a Merry Christmas and also thanked everyone that has sent cards. 19. Adjourn. 9:46 There will not be any Commissioner Court next Tuesday, December 24th. County offices will be closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, December 23, 24 and 25. Fannin County Commissioner Court Meetings are held every Tuesday at 9:00 am at Bonham City Hall. The public is invited to attend.

A Lifetime Gift of Love and Companionship

one wanting a new pet for Christmas or any other time of the year to go to your local animal shelter and adopt. Give a dog or cat a good, loving home. They deserve it. They did not ask to be dropped off at the shelter or abandoned on a country road or left to wander the streets. Give them such a good life, that they will forget their previous life before being abandoned and live happily ever after as one of your family members. The Bonham Animal Shelter has many dogs and cats and they need your help by providing them a good, loving home. Ages range from babies to adults, male and

female, short hair/long hair and various colors are available. There is a special adoption fee of $10 for Christmas. You will receive a gift bag when you adopt. If you are interested in adopting a cat or dog, please visit the Bonham Animal Shelter at 500 Industrial St, Bonham, TX 75418, Monday through Saturday, 8:30-4:00 or call 903-640-8245. You can visit and view some of the pets available for adoption at their Facebook page: City of Bonham Animal Shelter and also http://bonhamanimalshelter.petfinder.com Photos by Bonham Animal Shelter

I would like to wish the City of Bonham staff, Police Department, Fire Department and the citizens of Bonham a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Antonio (Tony) Rodriguez City Council Ward 1 903-486-5560 tonyrod1958@yahoo.com

MERRY CHRISTMAS

By Christina Brown Photos by Bonham Animal Shelter I love dogs and cats. If I could take every stray dog and cat off the street and out of the shelter I would. But I know my limits to be able to provide them a good home and I think every pet owner should too. With that said, if you are thinking about adopting a pet or giving one as a Christmas gift please read on. It’s the week of Christmas and there are little boys and girls (and adults) asking for a pet for Christmas. My kids asked for a variety of pets at Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Trades Day, you name it. And as much as you want to give your children everything they want, a new pet may not always be the best Christmas gift or as an any other time gift. Yes, little puppies and kittens are

sweet, adorable, precious and all those other words, but those little cute babies grow up to be adults and their cuteness turns into a lot of responsibility. And guess who that falls back to….the parents. No matter how many times or how serious the child is about taking care of the pet with the walking, feeding, cleaning up after accidents, and spending time with them, the new will usually fade and then it is the parents who will acquire the pet as their responsibility. So with that said, I encourage anyone wanting a new pet to think about the responsibility that will be required of you once you bring the pet into your home. It’s not easy at times, but it is one of the greatest rewards for the unconditional love and companionship that you will receive from this lifetime friend. I also want to encourage any-

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11 Fannin County native, Mark Daniel, formally announced his candidacy today for Fannin County Sheriff. Daniel, whose family has been in Fannin County for several generations, currently resides in Bonham with his wife, LuAnn. Daniel attended Bonham schools before enlisting in the United States Navy and serving the country during the Vietnam era. “Our citizens need a sheriff who is trustworthy and has

great leadership skills to lead Fannin County into the future,” stated Daniel. “It is with full appreciation of the responsibility which comes with the job that I am announcing my candidacy for the office of Fannin County Sheriff.” Mark Daniel attended both the State of Oklahoma and State of Texas Police Academy. Additionally, Daniel worked for the city of Hugo in Oklahoma where he served in patrol, narcotics, and criminal investigations including homicide. He also served as Chief Deputy at the Fannin

County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Sam Patton. Daniel’s subsequent career was spent working at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center where he held several positions including police officer and department supervisor until he retired in 2012. During his tenure at the VA, Daniel’s responsibilities included the supervision of nearly 30 employees, payroll, team training, budgeting and vendor contracts. Daniel received extensive training in disaster relief as well as numerous certifications through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEA), and served as the team leader of the Medical Decontamination Team (MDRT). Since retirement, Daniel has been heavily involved with the local breast cancer awareness organization, Women Rock. Daniel

wants the citizens of Fannin County to know he fully understands that the office of sheriff is not about the individual who holds the title but about the citizens served in the community who make up this great county. Daniel believes former Sheriff Patton was one of the finest to serve Fannin County and learned many lessons under his leadership including the fact that there should be no line dividing community and law enforcement, and that the FCSO is about being responsible to the needs of the community. Daniel’s desire is to improve the quality of life for all citizens. “As your next sheriff, I vow to create an environment where we all work together to solve problems in a proactive manner and to be open to

903-271-0205 new ideas as we join forces to make Fannin County a community to be proud of,” Daniel continued. “This office needs a leader who doesn’t just speak empty rhetoric, but one who has trusted leadership and organizational skills coupled with a vision for the future.” Daniel continued, “To the citizens of Fannin County, I promise to give you the law enforcement agency you can trust and a leader

who has trusted leadership experience and the sincerest desire to do what is right for all the people that make up this great county we call home.” “I am qualified to be your next Fannin County Sheriff and will work to make our county a better place for everyone. I am asking all the citizens of Fannin County for your vote and support in this important election.”

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.

EDWARD RAY BOYD

Bonham- Edward Ray Boyd, Jr., age 54 of Bonham, TX passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at his home. Edward Ray Boyd, Jr. was born on March 21, 1965 in Pasadena, TX to Edward Ray Boyd, Sr. and Lourine (Warner) Boyd McKee. He married Julie Erin Boyd on March 14, 2009 in Fairview, TX. Edward worked in maintenance for Princeton Independent School District. He loved family; was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Eddie, as was more commonly known, enjoyed the outdoors, loved sweet tea, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, was a gun and sharp object enthusiast and was constantly on the hunt for the elusive Sasquatch. In his leisure time, he hunted ghosts, visited the great outdoors of Arkansas, and was a fan of little seen horror movies. He was an interesting man who lived on his own terms but found time to make the truly important things in life, friends

and family, front and center of his attention. His passing truly is a loss to humanity and the gap of his leaving us now makes us miss him all the more. He is survived by his wife, Julie Boyd of the home; son, Justin Boyd of Princeton; son, Josh Boyd of Celeste; daughter, Crystal Boyd of Frisco; son, Jonah Boyd of Prosper and son, Tyler Boyd of Bonham; grandchildren, Eli Boyd and Emma Boyd and many more; sisters, Shelly Bailey, Lyn Boyd and Nikki Boyd; brother, Shaun Boyd; and stepmother, Cecilia Boyd. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, James Boyd. His memorial service was held December 13, 2019 at 7pm at Faith Baptist Church in Princeton TX. 1306 N 6th St, Princeton, TX 75407 Funeral services provided by Cooper Sorrells Funeral Home located at 2022 North Center Street Bonham, Texas 75418. Jerry was a member of the Oak Ridge Church of Christ and his greatest honor was serving as an elder for the Lord’s church. Jerry suffered with Chronic Kidney Disease since 2010 and diligently worked to be able to receive a kidney transplant. If you asked Jerry what he wanted, his reply would be a new kidney. Jerry was a carpenter, a gardener, a fixer upper, a perfectionist, a handyman, a cook, and loved his peacocks, chickens, and guineas. -As we head into winter, we always worry about our older horses weathering the storm. Winter time is very hard on the geriatrics, who often don’t have the reserves necessary to make it through the winter without losing body condition. Here are a few things to keep in mind when maintaining the older horse. Dentistry Chewing is the first step in digestion, and older horses are often desperately in need of dental care. From broken teeth to misalignments, these guys need a good, sedated oral exam with dental care yearly. Broken or diseased teeth should be removed and any waves, ramps, or hooks should be corrected to allow for more comfortable chewing. Some of these older horses need bite alignments, where the front teeth are filed down to allow the back teeth to grind more efficiently. By keeping the teeth as normal as possible, it helps to prolong the lifespan of the tooth, therefore prolonging the life of the horse. Feeding Proper nutrition is key for these aged horses. Because most older horses have dental issues, it’s important to feed them a diet that they can chew easily. Consider feeding geriatric horses an equine senior feed as it’s higher in calories and fat, and is made to dissolve quickly and easily. The thing to remember when choosing one is that a diet needs to have at least 5% fat in order to cause weight gain. For thinner horses, choose a senior feed that’s higher in fat. It’s also important to check the feed for whole flakes of beet pulp. Beet pulp is a common additive to feeds to get horses to gain weight. However, the trouble comes when the horse chokes on the beet pulp. While a grain choke takes about 20 minutes to get undone, beet pulp chokes can take an hour or two because it expands as it gets wet, and it

starts to solidify into a giant mass that makes it really difficult to get out. It’s also important to be discerning about the type of forage you’re offering your older horses. For horses without many teeth left, they may not be able to chew hay or grass very well. During your horse’s oral exam, be sure to ask about what the best type of forage is for your older horse. Some horses may need to be switched to a cubed or pelleted hay that has been soaked in order for them to avoid choking and to make sure they are getting the proper amount of nutrition from their forage. Gut Health As the horse ages, their gut flora changes. And since many older horses are being fed high-grain diets in order to keep the weight on them, it’s important to keep gut health in mind. Consider adding probiotics to the diet to help maintain healthy gut bacteria. Ask your veterinarian what s/ he recommends for a probiotic supplement. Pain Management We are all familiar with the arthritic changes that age brings on. Your horse is no exception to the rule. Especially on those cold, damp days, some older horses may need some help to stay comfortable. Painful joints may keep horses from walking to the water tank, or make them prone to stocking up. Talk to your veterinarian about keeping some NSAIDs like Bute, Banamine, or Equioxx on hand for those stiff days. Blanketing Most horses don’t require blanketing, even on the coldest of days as long as they have shelter. However, older horses need some special considerations. Especially thin older horses. Elderly horses with little to no fat may need a blanket since they have no fat stores to burn to stay warm. And as always, never put a blanket on a wet horse. Always dry the horse off before you put a blanket on them. And one thing to remember is that if you have a shivering horse, they may not need a blanket. Putting some hay or forage in front of the horse will actually generate more heat through digestion than a blanket will. Going into winter, try to get those horses in a good body condition so they at least have some stores of body fat to live on if it’s needed. By maintaining good dental health and proper nutrition, your horse will be more likely to weather the winter in good health. Ask your veterinarian what else you might do to keep your older guys happy and healthy as long as possible.

She compared her experience at Ranger to her career at Class 1A Dodd City -- where as a senior she helped the Lady Hornets reach their second of now three-straight state finals appearances and earned the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches girls player of the year award for 1A. She scored 2,909 points during four years as a starting guard. “It does have a familiar feeling, coming from my high school program,” said Granstaff. “We know that since we [at Ranger] are undefeated and nationally ranked, every team we have been playing has been giving us their best, and this is only making us better.” This season will equate the only one at Ranger for Granstaff, who as a truefreshman starter for Cowley College in Kansas during the 2018-19 season garnered second-team notoriety in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division awards after averaging 15.1 points, three rebounds and 2.7 steals in 31 games. She also helped Cowley reach the secondround of the Region-VI playoffs and accumulate a 24-8 record. “I was able to gain experience playing college ball there which prepared me to play at the level where I am at now,” said Granstaff. “I am thankful for my year at Cowley and everything that Coach Todd Clark and Coach Troy Thrasher taught me,” she said, “because it helped me become the player I am today.” Upon completion of this season at Ranger, Granstaff will have a decision to make regarding what comes next for her. “If she wants to continue playing, she will have opportunities,” said Foy who noted Granstaff is now being recruited. When her playing days have concluded, Foy also thinks she will be an “excellent” coach -- something Granstaff has expressed interest in doing. “She has a good basketball mind and her dad has a great basketball background,” said Foy. “She will be successful.”

Senior Kaiden West’s two first-team selections led Trenton’s honors on the All-District 5-2A-I football squad for 2019. West garnered first-team notoriety at wide receiver and safety, after the Tigers with a bi-district advance made the first postseason appearance in football in school history. Other first-team selections for Trenton, which with a 1-3 district record advanced to the postseason via the fourth and final playoffs berth in 5-2A-I, included: junior Christian Verde at quarterback, senior Tre Jackson as a wide receiver, junior Mason Boone as an offensive lineman, senior Hagen Moore as an outside linebacker and sophomore Jacob Forgione as a defensive lineman. The second-team

included juniors James Day at running back and Greg Edwards as an outside linebacker from Trenton, which with a 4-6 record garnered its most wins in football since resuming varsity football in 2012. Honorable mention for the Tigers were all on defense: senior Idres Jordan as a cornerback, junior Chase Lewis as an inside linebacker, Day as a safety, Jackson as a cornerback and Boone as an inside linebacker.

Bonhi HFC search possibly over By Rich Hilliard Bonham ISD’s board of trustees considered hiring a new head football coach at a special meeting on Friday, Dec. 20, at the administration center at 1005 Chestnut St. Superintendent Kelly Trompler presented a candidate to the board for consideration. It possibly ended a monthplus search sparked by the resignation after two seasons of John Fish, who had a 9-12 record, on Nov. 14. Fish’s 8-3 first season in 2018 included: Bonham’s most varsity football reg-

ular-season wins in 17 years, first winning season since 2005 and a bi-district advance. The short stay by Fish, who is now an associate pastor at Genesis Metro Church in Frisco, continued what has been a revolving door regarding the position during the last 26 years. Since Loy Dean Clark’s nine-consecutive seasons (1984-1992) as head coach, here are the others who have held the position: V. T. Smith, 1993-96; Duke Christian, 199799; Ronnie Hill, 2000-03;

Larry McFarlin, 2004-06; John Hall, 2007-08; Dale Trompler, 2009-11; Cody Bounds, 2012-14; and Tony Johnson, 2015-17.

Fannin football trio academic all-state By Rich Hilliard Three senior Fannin County football players garnered second-team notoriety on the Texas High School Coaches Association academic allstate teams for 2019. Bryson Cook and Jace LaCook made it from Class 3A Leonard, which last month garnered its ninth postseason appearance in football in the last 11 years. Kaiden West represented 2A Trenton, which last

month made its first football postseason appearance. Only seniors may receive the honor which, according to the THSCA website, also includes the following criteria: “be an athlete, student trainer or manager in good standing with the team, of good moral character and have an overall grade point average of 92 or above (including courses from grades 9-11 and courses completed from grade

12).” Other considerations are class rank and ACT/ SAT score(s).
