New Open Arms Shelter Breaks Ground in Bonham, Offering Hope and Support to the Community Press Release After over three years of serving more than 300 residents, construction has officially begun on a new Open Arms Shelter at 111 South Center Street in Bonham, Texas. This exciting milestone is made possible through funding provided by the Fannin County Hospital Authority. The new 7,780-square-foot facility will continue to provide hope, encouragement, and shelter to individuals and families in need—focusing on offering a “hand up, not just a handout.” In addition to serving as a short-term shelter helping residents achieve selfsufficiency, the building will house essential services like the Fannin Health Clinic and the WIC Nutrition Program.
These programs will be available to both shelter residents and the wider Fannin County community, further enhancing access to critical healthcare and nutrition resources. The Open Arms Shelter operates through the generous support of individuals, businesses, churches, and organizations across Fannin County. This new facility marks a significant step forward in the community’s commitment to helping neighbors in need. Texas Vehicle Inspection Changes Coming Soon
New law eliminates most vehicle safety inspections
(AUSTIN, Texas – December 17, 2024) Beginning January 1, 2025, Texas vehicle owners will no longer need to obtain a safety inspection prior to vehicle registration. House Bill 3297, passed during the 88th Legislature in 2023, eliminates the safety inspection program for noncommercial vehicles. The new law maintains the annual $7.50 safety inspection fee collected at the time of vehicle registration. Texans will see this fee labeled as the Inspection Program Replacement Fee on their registration renewal notice.
Owners registering a new vehicle will pay a $16.75 Inspection Program Replacement Fee to cover the first two years of registration. State law will still require obtaining a passing vehicle emissions inspection in the following 17 counties prior to vehicle registration: Brazoria County, Fort Bend County, Parker County, Collin County, Galveston County, Rockwall County, Dallas County, Harris County, Tarrant County, Denton County, Johnson County, Travis County, El Paso County, Kaufman County, Williamson County, Ellis County, Montgomery County.

"He's Built Different:" Bonhi XC's Horton to continue running days w/Dallas Baptist cross country. It didn't begin in high school, when he consistently qualified for regional competitions in the sport -- running on the varsity squad from the start. It didn't start in junior high -- where he won district championships in cross country. Instead, his efforts in the FitnessGram -- an aerobic capacity test -- in elementary school foreshadowed it. "That was the first time I Bonham's Hunter Horton. I've been doing this for 30 years. I've never coached an athlete who had a better understanding of going the extra mile." Horton will run that extra distance for Dallas Baptist University. The Bonham senior agreed to do so in a signing ceremony on Dec. 11 held in the Leonard A. Gerner Gymnasium, with family, friends, classmates, coaches and faculty present. "DBU spoke to my beliefs,"

said Horton. "I emailed Coach (Jacob) Phillips at DBU and he called me weekly," said the runner. "I liked the team and coach. I can get along with the coach. I also met one of the runners at a camp I went to." In 2021, Horton, as a freshman, took third in 20:01.7, as Bonham won the District 113A boys' title and advanced as a team to the Region II-3A boys' race. In 2022, he took 12th in 19:20.7, helping the Purple Warriors repeat as the 11-3A champion and again advance as a team to the same regional competition. Last fall, Horton finished as the varsity boys' runner-
up in 16:35 -- a personal and school record -- at the 14-4A Meet and again qualified for regional competition, even as Bonham returned to Class 4A after a six-year 3A stay. His final cross country season equated a comeback, as he missed running at district as a junior -- and likely again at regionals -- due to a fractured back. "I had to have the drive to get better," said Horton. "I had to show I had what it takes to be a good runner." His attitude during his comeback season mirrored his described approach to running throughout his years at Bonham. "When I would tell the cross
country runners what their practice route was for the day, leaving from Bonham High School," said Trompler, "Hunter would say: 'Can I also add a lap through the country club or Powder Creek Park (before) coming back?' "In sports, it's said that anyone can go to practice. It's what you do outside that sets you apart," said the coach. "Hunter would come run up here on Sundays and during Christmas break. You'd see him running around town. It's what he does on his own that has made the difference. "That's why he's going to college to run. He's built different."

Commissioners Continued from page 4
16. Approve the Multipurpose Complex Gift Deed and Bill of Sale to the City of Bonham and authorize County Judge to sign on behalf of the County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted this had already been approved and this was just part of the work attached to it. He further explained how the agreement with the city was conditional on the facility’s use to be for the benefit of the county. A motion to approve was made by Commissioner Magness with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed. 17. Discussion and possible action regarding additional secure storage areas at the Justice Center – County Clerk: This was passed on. 18. Discussion and possible action regarding the creation of an Elections Administrator position in Fannin County – County Clerk: FC Clerk Jen Garner began the discussion by noting that FC Elections Supervisor Galen Bennett had officially resigned his position as of December 2, 2024. Discussed were state requirements regarding the hiring of an EA and the question posed to Ms. Garner whether it was even necessary, in her opinion, to hire an EA or if appointing another Supervisor would suffice. Mr. Bennett also offered his insights into the matter. Ms. Garner noted she would be consulting with the county’s election chairs for their input. No action taken at this time. 19. Review bid and approve rebidding for Culverts for all precincts – Purchasing Agent: FC Purchasing Agent Julie Criswell explained how there had been only one bid made on this that was higher than desired and with Commissioner McQueen’s input, a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to reject the bid and to put the matter out there for re-bid. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Magness and passed. 20. Approve rebidding for Fuel and Oil for all precincts as no bids were received – Purchasing Agent: Ms. Criswell began the discussion on why no bids were received on this with Judge Cunningham suggesting the notice for bids be sent to other sites and Commissioners Magness and Self advising contact to be made to companies previously used by the county. A motion to approve going out for re-bid was made by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Self and passed. OPEN DISCUSSION ITEMS: Open discussion items will be passed on unless discussion requested by a member of the Court or a Citizen. 21. Subdivision Committee and Subdivision Policy – County Judge: This was passed on. 22. Courthouse repairs and litigation – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted the electric contractor is trying to get all the electrical issues cleared up before the end of the year. 23. Justice Center – County Judge: Judge Cunningham the court was waiting to receive the numbers for what it would take to have secure storage space added for the county’s records. 24. County budget and revenue sources – County Judge: Ms. Whipple gave an update on the training and other activities being done regarding “hot tax.” 25. Water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Administrative Assistant to Judge Cunningham, Lisa Loiselle, noted she had mailed out the documents to interested parties pertaining to the FC Water Supply Agency. The Christmas Truce
© 2024 Jody Dyer typewriterweekly.com
“All through the long night those big guns flashed and growled just like the lightning and thunder when it storms in the mountains at home. And, oh my, we had to pass the wounded. And some of them were on stretchers going back to the dressing stations. And some of them were lying around, moaning and twitching. And the dead were all along the road. And it was wet and cold. And it all made me think of the Bible and the story of the Antichrist and Armageddon.” Sergeant Alvin C. York Company G, 328th Infantry, 82nd Division, U.S. Army, on fighting in the Argonne Forest, France, in WW I. War is hell. Ask anyone who has survived it. They will tell you this, if they can speak about it at all. The Great War, now we call it World War I, was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Between July of 1914 and November of 1918 more than 16 million lives were lost. This was our first “modern” war, where we used machine guns, mechanized tanks, improved artillery, even airplanes and poison gas. Much of the fighting involved trench warfare, with troops dug in and living in muddy, disease-ridden ditches carved from the ground. Between opposing trenches was a ”No Man’s Land” – littered with barbed wire, dead soldiers, and the refuse of war. In the midst of this hell on Earth, one cold December night, something astonishing happened. This is the stuff of legend. On Christmas Eve, 1914, in the area of Flanders, Belgium, along the Western Front, an unlikely miracle took place. Hunkered down in their trenches, British and French troops faced German soldiers on the other side. All was quiet, until one soldier started to sing. Softly at first, then louder, these words could be heard, “Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht…” Recognizing the carol’s tune, the British and French troops responded, singing “Silent Night, Holy Night…” With binoculars in hand, a British soldier peering over the parapet spotted twinkling candles in the branches of a small fir tree. The German troops were celebrating Christmas. As the singing continued, shouting began on either side. One British soldier interviewed years later, said he heard the voice
of an enemy soldier, speaking in English with a strong German accent. He was saying, “Come over here.” Over the top of their trench, another soldier raised a crudely written sign which read: “YOU NO SHOOT, WE NO SHOOT.” In response, French and British soldiers waved a ragged banner on which they had scrawled “MERRY CHRISTMAS.” Cautiously and nervously the unarmed soldiers rose from their trenches. They crossed “No Man’s Land” meeting face-toface in the frosty cold. Awkwardly, they shook hands and clapped shoulders. Some embraced. Some made an effort to hide their tears. For the rest of the night, and throughout Christmas Day, they sang carols and exchanged gifts. Chocolate, biscuits, coffee, canned meat, jam, cigarettes, pipe tobacco, pie, and wine were traded back and forth. From somewhere a ball appeared and soon a lively game of football ensued (soccer to us Americans). One German Lieutenant who was there wrote, “How marvelously wonderful, yet how strange it was. The English officers felt the same way about it. Thus Christmas, the celebration of Love, managed to bring mortal enemies together as friends for a time.” But not everyone was happy about the Christmas Truce. Soon strict orders came down from the high command on both sides. Soldiers were ordered back to their trenches, and all too soon the fighting resumed. News of this Christmas miracle did make it back to England, France, and Germany. Soldiers began sending letters and photos home to their families. Some of these letters and photos were featured in newspapers of the day. This sparked debate about whether or not the truce had impacted morale in the ranks and was actually a good thing. I would maintain that the Christmas Truce of 1914 was profound evidence of God’s supernatural love poured out upon the hearts of men. We all need that. Merry Christmas!

Waiting Time Could Be Worship Time Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas
I love Christmas. There, I said it. I know that for many of us, it means running at break neck speed and totally stressing out to “get everything done.” However, I must confess that my current season of life has given me a perspective that is causing me to really soak in the very special meaning of Christ’s birth on a whole new level. As a kid, I remember all too well how hard it was to
wait for Christmas Day. I ourselves waiting. Most all of remember - waiting to see us are waiting for something 12-18-18 what was underneath the – a raise – the call from the wrapping paper – waiting for doctor – the prodigal son to it to warm up enough for me come home…the list goes to take that new bicycle for its on and on. My prayer for you is that your waiting time first spin. So much of the story of would be worship time. May Christmas is about waiting. you lean into the Lord as you The Jews waiting for the wait. We gather together to Messiah to come. The Father lean into the Lord in worship. waiting for that special It is by God’s sovereign will moment in history to “send and design. forth” His Son. Hello everyone! This week’s message comes from Isaiah 9:6. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” I know that I have shared this message before, but I feel led to share it with you again. This is the one true reason that we celebrate Christmas. Too many times we get so caught up in the commercialism, pageantry, decorations, and other worldly aspects of the season that we lose sight of this. Through the birth of Jesus Christ, God gave us the greatest gift that this world has ever known or received, and we often take it for
granted. As I’ve said before, this is a very dangerous thing for us to do. This verse not only predicts the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, but is also the promise of the Messiah. We must always remember that His birth is the most important reason, above everything else, that we celebrate the Christmas season. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” His birth was greatest gift to the world. In 1959, Audrey Mieir wrote this classic hymn that comes from the message on this verse. “His name is Wonderful, His name is Wonderful, His
name is Wonderful, Jesus my Lord. He is the mighty King, Master of everything: His name is Wonderful, Jesus my Lord. He’s the great Shepherd, He’s the great Shepherd, The Rock of all Ages: Almighty God is He. Bow down before Him, Love and adore Him, His name is Wonderful, Jesus my Lord.” If you are looking to find a good church home, we invite you to come visit us, and be part of our church family and worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

rich man lifted up his eyes in torment, but Lazarus was “comforted” (Luke 16:1925). Jesus said, “for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:5). Peter reminds us that we, “according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13). Jesus said, “for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). John records that “they shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (Revelation 7:1617). Jesus said, “for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). David wrote, “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble” (Psalm 41:1). The Lord said that “if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14). Jesus said, “for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). If we want to see God, we will “follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).
Jesus said, “for they shall be called the children of God” (Matthew 5:9). When questioned about marriages in heaven, Christ said that “they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection” (Luke 20:35-36). Jesus said, “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). Peter tells us that “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him” (Acts 10:34-35). Jesus said, “for great is your reward in heaven” (Matthew 5:12). John tells of our individual responsibilities of receiving the reward that God has promised, “Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward” (2 John 1:8). Let us find JOY in serving the Lord. Paul lets us know that “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith” (Galatians 5:22).

The Joy That Lasts Forever
‘Blessed, Happy, are the Discouraged, the Sorrowful, the Lowly, the SpirituallyDepressed, the Merciful, the Pure in Heart, the Peaceful, and the Persecuted’ (Matthew 5:1-12). The exact opposite of the world’s standards. But the Blessing is not in the Unfortunate Condition in itself, but in the Glorious Reward to come. We look to “Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). Heaven, to Jesus, who understands and knows, is so Infinitely Superior to Earthly Life, that anything that increases the Longing for Heaven should be regarded as a Blessing.’ Jesus said, “for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Jesus also said that “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). Jesus said, “for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). When the rich man and Lazarus both died, the
