Third graders from Ector Elementary school collected 72 pairs of pajamas and several books for the Fannin County Children’s Center for Christmas. Center’s two primary programs: CASA and the Children’s Advocacy Center. Some of the children are living in foster homes, away from family and friends. Other children have gone to live with grandparents or other relatives as a result of abuse or neglect. Many of these families struggle financially when one or more children suddenly come to live with them. In other families, the discovery of sexual abuse in the home has meant the loss of family income when the offender leaves. In January, there will be free classes for adults to learn how to prevent, recognize and respond to child abuse. The center’s staff is also excited to begin offering a new child abuse prevention curriculum for children and youth. In February, a new training class for individuals interested in becoming CASA volunteers will begin. Volunteers are also needed for tasks around the center, including sitting with families who are at the center for therapy and interviews. From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 My Most Unusual Christmas

By Bro. Bill Beasley For the past December columns I have focused attention on the Christmas story observed in usual settings. For this week I would like to relate to you what I

choose to call “My Most Unusual Christmas.” The message will be the same. Only the circumstances will be unusual. The Christmas December 25, 1944, was the first Christmas Day I had been away from my family. Our nation was engaged in World War II. I was now in the military and had been doing air combat aboard a B-24 since June 1944. On September 5, 1944, I was captured and had been a prisoner of war. Since on the Christmas

Day of which I write, I was housed in Barracks 6 Room 2 in Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany. The time was not unusual. The place was unusual – it was not a church. There were no decorations. There was nothing to denote Christmas. I had no Bible. That had been taken away. We did have a religious service and gave emphasis to the meaning of the birth of the Christ child. In our barracks room, we had nineteen airmen. I have a copy of our room personnel

and found that many states were represented. One roommate from California played the accordion well. He blessed us by playing many Christmas Carols. There were no special meals, we did well to have anything. None of us could keep from losing weight; for example, I lost from 172 to 115. The Christmas Day message was an encouragement. It helped us to stay positive in a very negative situation. We learned in a very personal way that God kept His promise to supply our needs.

COOKING IN FANNIN

It seems appropriate that the last issue of this year will be one that was sent in. It’s always so exciting to receive a recipe that someone has sent me, and I thank Lorraine Melton of Randolph for sharing this one with us. I enjoy cobblers, but peach is my favorite, and I hope you will try this one. This one is unique because it calls for brown sugar as well as granulated sugar. I can just imagine the aroma in my house while it’s baking right now! PEACH COBBLER

Preheat oven to 375°. In sauce pan, cook first 4 ingredients until thick, stirring constantly. Add peaches, lemon juice and vanilla. Pour into a 2 quart baking dish. Topping: 1 cup sifted flour ¼ cup sugar 1 ½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt ½ cup milk ½ cup softened butter

why not the county offices?, 4) Plan for expected countywide growth – a long term plan for growth that will help preserve some of the things that bring people here to start with. For the past seven years I have worked as both the Executive Director of the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce and the Manager of the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex. During this time both entities have become financially stable and we have grown both the quality and number of events that are hosted for the communities’ benefit. I am especially proud of the fact that both entities have embraced technology to make us more relevant to our customers

I will be open about both our successes and missteps when they occur and not just go along with the majority vote just to get along. I ask for your vote for Fannin County Commissioner, Precinct One during the primary in March. Early Voting begins February 18, 2020 and I encourage you to get out and vote. For more information please visit my website at: www.dalemcqueen.com

VICE

¼ cup sugar ¼ cup brown sugar 1 Tbs. cornstarch ½ cup water 1 tsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla 6 medium size peaches or 1 large and 1 small can of peaches

Having lived in Fannin County for the past 30 years I can attest to some of the attractions that bring people here because they were what brought my wife and I here for jobs in the late 80’s. Fannin County is a great place to live due our close proximity to the expanding metroplex and all it has to offer, the two new lakes going in that will attract even more people to our county, plenty of open space for recreation, and some highly rated school systems for our kids. These are all reasons more people are moving to Fannin County everyday and our county government needs to adapt and work to accommodate this growth without losing what brings people here to start with. As a county commissioner I would like to work on four main goals: 1) A balanced budget for the county – just like your household we should not spend more than we bring in, 2) Program to improve our county roads – we need a plan to actually improve our roads instead of just dumping more rock on them after every rain, 3) Improve the efficiency of county offices – technology is improving every aspect of our lives and the businesses we interact with,

pieces at no charge and non-members may also enter 3 pieces at a cost of $25 per person. “Selfies” is a broader theme than the name implies, according to Executive Director Lisa Avila. “Though we want to include photographs that folks have taken of themselves in this exhibit, what we are hoping to prompt from local artists is self-depiction in a more varied way,” Avila said. “Painters, sculptors, potters - all are invited to show themselves in a new light, whether or not they include their face in the art. Abstract interpretation can be fun also. Mostly, we hope the exhibit will be an enjoyable one for our visitors and challenge our artists just enough to be enjoyable for them. The Selfies Exhibit is also open to youth artists and youth may always enter CAC exhibits at no charge.” This exhibit will go up on Friday, January 10 and remain in the gallery through January 31. By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Led by a seniordominated roster, Class 1A Ector’s Eagles concluded play before Christmas with a 12-4 overall record. Austin Earl equates one of those seniors, having earned Region III-1A notoriety from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches as a junior following Ector’s area-round advance -- the Eagles’ fifthconsecutive postseason. Earl also garnered the offensive superlative in 23-1A last

season when Ector finished as the district runner-up to advance to the playoffs. Seniors Garen Norwood and Noel Cannaday also have returned for the Eagles after earning first-team all-district status last season. Joey Grijalva, another senior, is back after garnering an all-district honorable mention. Other returning seniors for Ector include Nathan Essary and Kenny Nelms, with Class of 2020 classmate J. B. Johnson also now on the varsity roster.

Junior Kyrin Beach, a varsity veteran, joined fellow junior Corey Whitburn on Dec. 20 on the line-up utilized that day. Before Christmas, Ector, which was ranked No. 21 in the Dec. 16 1A boys poll by TABC, had won tournament championships this season at Celeste and Sulphur Bluff during the month of December -- part of a 10-game winning streak. letic staffs at Melissa. “I owe a lot of thanks to Melissa,” said Dezern. “I wouldn’t be where I am now without the administration, schools and coaches there.” On Dec. 20, he garnered his first job as a head football coach -- Bonham ISD’s board of trustees approved him for the position at a special meeting held at the district’s administration building. “I wanted to coach at a small school and for my kids to go to school there,” said Dezern. “I grew up in a small town,” he said, “and I’ve always seen myself being at a small school. “I love the small-town feeling”. Having submitted a 499 average daily membership on Oct. 28 for the University Interscholastic League’s biennial Snapshot Day, Bonham, which left 4A after the 2018 spring semester, will remain in 3A overall and 3A-I for football for a second-straight alignment. New districts for each will be

announced online on Feb. 3 by the UIL. Dezern takes the helm at Bonham, which slipped to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in 5-3A-I play in 2019 during its second season under John Fish, who resigned on Nov 14 and now serves as an associate pastor at Genesis Metro Church in Frisco. The Purple Warriors finished 8-3 overall and as the 5-1 runner-up in the same district during Fish’s first campaign -which included Bonham’s most varsity football regular-season wins in 17 years, first winning season and most overall singleseason victories since 2005 and a bi-district advance. “[Bonham] used to be in our district when they were in 4A,” said Dezern. “They were always competitive with us and had hard-working kids.” Dezern served last season as assistant head football coach to Nally and worked with wide receivers at 4A-I Melissa, which again in 2019 had a high-powered offense it utilized to make

a regional advance. It took defending-champion Waco La Vega, the 4A-I runnerup this season, to stop the Cardinals, edging Melissa, 45-42, on a field goal as time expired. “At Melissa, we were a spread team and high-tempo,” said Dezern. “This year, we slowed it down and used two tight-end sets. “I think a lot of that will transition to here,” he said. “Bonham has good kids and athletes. “I think that plays in favor of my offense. I think we will have success.” While at Frankston, Dezern’s stint there included being the offensive coordinator as well as the baseball manager and head track coach. He also managed the baseball team and coached quarterbacks at Jacksonville, between his stints at Frankston and Melissa. “I’m a football guy, but want the kids to be successful in everything,” said Dezern. “I think [that success] transfers over and helps in football.”

Press Release - The Creative Arts Center’s East Gallery opens a new exhibit on January 8 with the art of Lisa Avila and Donna West. Lisa is Executive Director of the gallery and Donna is an Artist Member and a member of the Fannin Community Foundation’s Board of Directors. She is also the owner of Town West Laundry. This exhibit will include varied media - Donna was a professional photographer in the Metroplex area, using her skills to shoot product and

catalog photographs. Now, her photography includes nature, landscapes, cityscapes and abstract themes. She is also an abstract painter, works with alcohol inks and acrylic pouring and constructs three-dimensional art. “I see art everywhere,” Donna says. “Even the mundane things like brick walls or puddles on the sidewalk there’s artistic beauty there, especially when photographed from a unique perspective.” Lisa became Executive

Director of the CAC in 2012 and returned to her artistic roots, after a career as a horse-industry professional. An art major while in college, Lisa left her art behind for many years only to return to painting just over 10 years ago. “In this job, surrounded by so many talented people, I feel continually inspired to create,” Lisa said. “I tend to shy away from realism in the traditional sense, using what some might call more “metaphysical themes.” Hence, our title of the exhibition. Every artist is unique in his or her own way, and with the sometimes wacky perspectives Donna and I share, we decided to combine our efforts for this exhibition.” A reception will be held from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 10 to officially open the exhibit and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served. There will be a variety of types of art for sale, much of it $100 or less. The exhibition runs through February 4.

DENISON – TxDOT’s Travel Information Center on US 75 north of Denison will host a holiday sober ride safety event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 20 TxDOT personnel and local law enforcement representatives will be on hand to share the dangers and legal consequences of drinking and driving with holiday travelers. This event is part of TxDOT’s “Plan While You Can” sober ride education campaign aimed at reminding drivers to find a sober ride to and from festive events this holiday season, TxDOT officials said. In 2018, there were 2,370 alcohol-related crashes in Texas during the holiday season. Those crashes killed 75 people and seriously injured another 199. And, as in years past, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to greet visitors and sit with them for

holiday photos. The Denison center is located at Exit 74 on US 75 north of Denison. Exit right and follow the signs to the center if traveling north from Denison; if traveling south across the Red River, exit from the right lane at the Texas-side of the Red River bridge. TxDOT’s 12 travel information centers promote tourism to and within Texas, provide visitors with a vital rest stop, offer vending for snacks and beverages, serve as a Wi-Fi hot spot, and provide travel assistance from travel counselors. The centers and counselors create a positive first impression of Texas, help travelers choose travel routes, and provide detailed information on destinations, events and road conditions. For more information, call (903) 737-9213 or the center at (903) 4632860.

The Many Lives of a Courthouse

1965 After 1928 fire.

1888 Courtesy Photos 1860 By Christina Brown This New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2019 marks the 91st anniversary of the Fannin County courthouse fire on December 31, 1928. The fire in the 1888 historical structure caused the courthouse to take on the future with many faces over the decades only to be revealed in the demolition of the courthouse that has taken place over the past 1½ years. To look at the courthouse a year ago, no one would have known what kind of history and hidden secrets the current courthouse held, until many of those were uncovered this year with the demolition of the courthouse. Multiple artifacts have been found from Prince Albert tobacco cans and Lucky Strike cigarette packages, to old liquor and medicine bottles (one from 1906) found in the walls, as well as old tools, an oil burning sanitizer, an ink bottle and a 1927 memorandum account book. Demolition of the building has also revealed brick covered windows, original hardwood floors, archways no one knew existed, cast iron staircases and historic cast iron grills from the basement vents, an original wood support in an archway which still shows partial burning from the historical fire, as well as details in the stone work and the 1888 lettering on the outside front of the courthouse above the entryway. But the Fannin County courthouse has survived more than

the 1928 fire. Previous history shows that Fannin County started small with 1928 their government buildings and as the years progressed so did the buildings that housed our judicial system. Before Fannin County was organized, settlers traveled by riverboat up the Red River in 1836 to Jonesborough in what is now Red River County. Because of rapid growth in this area, a petition for the formation of a new county was presented to the Texas Congress on October 5, 1837. On December 14, 1837 the Texas Legislature approved the formation of Fannin County and designated Jacob Black’s log cabin on the Red River as the state house. In 1838, the growing town of Warren was named the county seat of Fannin County and was known as Fort Warren or Old Warren. Warren was near the border of Grayson County on the Red River which is now known as the Ambrose area. On January 8, 1840, Warren was named the county seat of Fannin County and the 1st courthouse was built and completed in 1840. It was a two story oak, cedar and bois’d arc wood structure with rough plank floors. Warren was also the site of the first school and post office in Fannin County. Once

the county seat was moved to Bois D’ Arc, Warren began to decline. It served as a logistical station for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, but was bypassed by the railroad after the war. As a result, it eventually became uninhabited; its post office closed in 1876. The original courthouse was removed from Warren in the 1920s with the intention of moving it to Bonham as a historic landmark, but this was never completed. On January 16, 1843, Bois D’ Arc (which later was renamed Bonham) became the county seat due to the Indian threat at Warren. Judge John P. Simpson donated land that became Bonham’s downtown commercial district and the courthouse square where a dog trot (double room with breeze way) log cabin was built for the 2nd courthouse. One room was used for the courtroom and the other room was used for county and district staff. Jurors would have to climb a ladder in order to get to a perch that was above the courtroom to serve as the jury. A 3rd courthouse was built in Bonham and was completed in the early 1850s. It was a 40’x 40’, two story

brick structure that cost $3,800. Because of structural issues, it was demolished in 1859. In 1860 the 4th courthouse in Bonham was built and completed. It had a square-plan ante bellum and a brick two story tower. In 1881 a two story brick annex was built on the northeast corner of the square due to the need for more workspace. In 1887 both the courthouse and annex were demolished to make room for a new courthouse. The building of the 5th courthouse was started in 1888 and was completed in May of 1889. For $77,000 the new courthouse was designed by architect Wesley Clark Dodson who was well known for his designs of Texas courthouses, and stone masons Kane & Carmack were the contractors. The courthouse was designed as a Second Empire Renaissance Revival style courthouse built from rough-cut local limestone from Gober. This magnificent structure stood in the middle of Fannin County’s main hub, “the square” for 40 years when in a blink of an eye, everything changed. On New Year’s Eve day, December 31, 1929 there was smoke spotted near the cupola of the courthouse and within minutes, heavy black smoke was pouring from the tower. Due to the height of the

courthouse and strong high winds, the ability to save the courthouse with the help of the Sherman, Honey Grove and Paris fire departments was impossible. The fire completely destroyed the central clock tower and the elaborate mansard roof, as well as the pride of Fannin County. The courthouse clock and huge bell were found in the rubble of the basement. The clock bell tolled for the last time at 12:00 noon, December 31, 1929. ---------The Dallas Morning News issued the following article concerning the New Year’s Eve fire at the courthouse: Fire Destroys Courthouse Dallas Morning News, Dallas, TX 1 Jan. 1930 Loss Caused by Blaze at Bonham Estimated at $100,000. Special to The News. Bonham, Texas, Dec. 31.The Fannin County courthouse burned here Tuesday with a loss estimated at $100,000. The courthouse was built in 1888. The fire department was hampered by the height of the building and a high wind. The county records in the District Clerk’s office and those in the County Clerk’s office were saved. Although some were damaged. Records in other departments were lost. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The first thing those who discovered it

noticed was smoke coming out at various places in the roof, thus showing that the fire had gained considerable headway in the dome before it was discovered. Insurance of $60,000 was carried. -------After the fateful day of the courthouse fire, the 6th courthouse was completed in 1930. The “new” courthouse was essentially the original 1888 building keeping the exterior and some of the lower sections still intact, but without the roof and tower. Due to the lack of funding caused by the Great Depression, commissioners had to use insurance money to repaint the outside of the three story building white, install a flat roof as well as four clocks. In 1965 a 7th courthouse was completed. Again this was the original 1888 building being remodeled. The courthouse was modernized, the remaining roof pediments and 1930 decorations were removed, contemporary windows and colored panels were installed and the exterior was covered with a smooth surface of what is call Lueders limestone so it would look more of a Modern Art Deco building. The cost was reportedly $600,000. Currently the 8th courthouse is in the process of coming into existence. As before, the original 1888 building is being used, but this time the project will reverse changes to the three story courthouse that were made during the 1966 renovation and in 1930 following the fire. Through restoration and reconstruction, the courthouse exterior and major interior public spaces will be returned to the nineteenth century appearance. Many obstacles, financially and structurally have taken place, and may so in the future, but the progress that has been made since the ground breaking on June 11, 2019 is beginning to heighten the sense of excitement as the historical façade is revealed and the realty of seeing the “Pride of Fannin County” shine again is closer with each passing day.

Fannin County Family Crisis Center Hope for Christmas was Certainly full of Hope!

Bonham American Legion Post 283 and American Legion Riders provided over $300 worth of gifts for children.

Without Clayton Homes of Bonham, the Fannin County Crisis Center would not be able to provide Hope for Christmas to so many families who really need the help.

Bluebonnet Meat Company out of Trenton provided over 100 turkeys and chickens for the Christmas Dinner Boxes. Thank you! By Sandy Hood - A big THANK YOU to the Fannin County community for rising to the challenge

of providing Christmas for many children in our community that otherwise would not have had

Fannin Bank donated beautiful tins of cookies and bags of assorted popcorn for families that needed help. presents under the tree! This year we were able to provide 355 children with Christmas presents and

99 families with Christmas dinner boxes. Thanks to our generous donors, many children received

toys and clothes to open on Christmas Day. The Fannin County Crisis Center is so grateful for the support of the Fannin County community. Countless churches, businesses and individuals gave money, food and toys to ensure that every family in Fannin County had a Merry Christmas. Some of the families served this holiday season are trying to cope with life after leaving an abusive situation. Many victims of domestic violence leave with just the clothes on their backs, and then work to piece life back together for themselves and their children. Many other families struggle financially just to make ends meet day to day. We signed up numerous families that

live on so little it is hard to imagine how they can possibly make ends meet, let alone figure out how they can provide a traditional Christmas for their children. Our top donor was Clayton Homes of Bonham. Other top donors were: Walmart, Leonard Chamber, Bluebonnet Meat Company, Fannin Bank, American Legion Post 283 of Bonham, Bonham American Legion Riders and many individual families & businesses. Fannin County Family Crisis Center shares a heartfelt thank you to all that made this year’s Hope for Christmas possible. It would not have been a success without each and every one of you!
