Brent Frailicks 10th Annual Fundraiser 8/1/23 for Savoy Sunnyside Cemetery10/3/23

Press Release - A Large crowd turned out for the annual Sunnyside Cemetery Fundraiser in Savoy this year as Brent Frailicks and his band performed their usual Country and Gospel songs. They seem to get better every year as they donate their time for this occasion. The Band was made up of Ray McCarthy, Piano, Shon Faulkner, Bass, Ben Vincent, Steel Guitar, Scott Matthews, Drums, Fred Spears, Mandolin and Brent, who plays it all. Also this year we had special guest Brent Frailicks singer, Terri Elk, singing Dolly’s “Coat of Courtesy Photo Many Colors”. We can never thank them all enough-Brent was born and raised in Savoy and grew up watching his dad, Vonda Frailicks, a guitar player and song writer perform all around the country. Brent is a natural, and can play any instrument and a good singer along with it. Now his dad is at Sunnyside and for the past ten years Brent and his band has donated their time, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving to help the Cemetery. Also the ladies of the area always outdo themselves bringing baked goods for Mr. Roy Fuller, Auctioneer from Bells, to auction off. He has been Tony@budgetwindowsoftexoma.com with us every year. This year we had tools and Christmas items along with the baked items donated to auction off. Upcoming Elections – Meeting the Challenges of Today and the Future • Do they have the energy needed for the job and the ability to serve in the office for multiple terms (if re-elected), or will they be a one-term candidate? On the flip side, I avoid supporting candidates who I believe are seeking office for the following reasons: • Candidates who have no plan for how they will execute the duties of the office they seek. • Candidates who are seeking office to push a specific agenda of their own or on behalf of another. • Candidates who are running solely because they need a job or desire a higher salary. • Candidates who do not work 40 hours per week in their current job, or candidates who have other jobs/ businesses on the side. • Candidates who are probable one-term candidates. I believe there are three critical races in this election cycle, and they all fall under the general heading of “law enforcement.” The incumbents for these offices are not seeking re-election. County Sheriff: Transparency and proactivity are crucial in the Sheriff’s Office, as we have learned from the recent issues with escaped prisoners and emergency dispatch of first responders.

All three candidates running for sheriff are current Police Chiefs in various towns in our county. What training have they organized for themselves and their departments to increase the skills of their officers? How these chiefs currently handle their departments will be a clear indicator of how they will run the Sheriff’s Office, if elected. Crimes against children and trafficking are on the increase in Fannin County. As a CASA for six years, I have seen a noticeable increase in CASA cases involving child abuse, child sex abuse, and child trafficking. Our new sheriff needs to be specifically trained in this area of criminal activity, as well as have the passion and commitment to pursue justice for the victims of these crimes. 336th Judicial District Court: The current District Judge has served with a good balance of justice and compassion. I particularly appreciate her handling of child custody cases, in which CASA is involved. These cases can be quite complex, sometimes involving five-to-six different lawyers in each case. I believe we need to elect a replacement judge with similar passion, experience, and a commitment to protect our children. Children’s lives are

“Star Spangled Banner.” After listening to their performance, it was easy to understand why their group walked away from a previous Nationals Competition held in Nashville Tennessee with the second-place gold rating. Ms. Waller noted their next event would be held Thursday 11/30/2023 at Bonham High School. 5. Introductions: There were no introductions. 6. Public Forum: There were no speakers. ROUTINE ITEMS: 7. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the bills to be paid was $249,819.85 with payroll coming in at $442,040.93. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve payment with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed. 8. Report of monies collected by the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 office for October 2023; $1,405.25 – County Judge: Informational only. DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION AND ACTION ITEMS: 9. Make changes or keep current Texas County District Retirement System Plan (TCDRS) – County Au-

ditor: Ms. Whipple explained “cola” (cost of living adjustment) and the recommended 2% raise to the current rate. A discussion ensued regarding the necessity (or lack thereof) for the raise. A motion was then made by Commissioner Magness to approve the 2% raise with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed with one nay vote from Commissioner McQueen. 10. Approve going out for bid for a John Deere Motor Grader for Precinct 3 – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane explained how the bid for this was opened last Wednesday with one bid coming in at $177,000. After some discussion, Commissioner Magness noted there was currently enough money in his budget to cover the cost and made the motion to approve the bid. Commissioner Self seconded the motion and the motion passed. 11. Approve or deny a reduction in bond amounts for The Peninsula and The Shores at The Peninsula developments; total bond amount is $4,318,269.00 – Development Services Director: Fannin County Development Services Director

Fannin County Commissioners Court – BHS Choir, Performance of Excellence

Tuesday, November 28, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with all County Commissioners and County Judge present. The Invocation was led by Pastor Mark Posey of the 1st Congregational Church of Bonham. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, Retired, and Warrant Officer of the Texas State Guard, Jeff Jones. 4. Performance by the Bonham High School Vocal Ensemble – Anna Waller, Choir Director: After the Choir Director of Bonham High School Anna Waller introduced the Varsity Choir, she noted they will be competing in Orlando, Florida in March of next year for those wishing to sponsor the Choir. The thirty-one-member Choir then treated the court to a collection of Holiday tunes sung with perfect harmony and tone that began with the seasonal favorite “Silent Night”, and included “Carol of the Bells”, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” and others before concluding with a stirring rendition of the

Di Hopkins along with Judge Cunningham explained why the initial bond was established and how improvements for the developments have been made which negates the need for the bond guarantee to continue at its original amount. After Judge Cunningham made the request to have a statement in writing regarding the matter be provided from the bonding company, Commissioner McQueen made the motion to approve the bond be reduced to $941,338.00 providing the bond company is okay with the reduction up front. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed. 12. Authorize County Judge to negotiate and sign Master Professional Services Agreement between Fannin County and Freese and Nichols, Inc – County Judge: Judge Cunningham referred the Commissioners to review the paperwork provided to them. Commissioner Magness then made the motion to approve with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed. Continued

The 2024 election primaries are just around the corner, with Election Day scheduled for March 5, and early voting beginning on February 20, 2024. Voters in Fannin County have a much greater impact on the quality of officials we elect at the county level than we do at the state and national levels, so please vote. Each voter has the burden to examine the candidates to determine who is most qualified. I personally evaluate candidates on the following characteristics: • Is the candidate honest? • Does the candidate have the skills to effectively execute the duties and responsibilities of the particular office being sought? • Why is the candidate seeking the office? Are they looking to improve the quality of our county, or is it just a “stepup” in their career? • Does the candidate have a servant’s heart? • Does the candidate serve the county, or local municipalities, currently or in the recent past? • Do I believe the candidate will serve the interests of the citizens of Fannin County? • Since elected officials have no “boss,” will they work the necessary hours on the job to meet or exceed the demands of the office?

changed forever, for the better or for the worse, based on the outcome of these cases. Additionally, dealing with children’s trauma and emotional fragility is a skill that is learned through experience. I urge you to ask the candidates about their experience working with abused and neglected children, and I believe every voter should be very discerning when deciding how to cast their vote for this position. District Attorney: The current D.A. is not seeking re-election. The D.A.’s office has the enormous task of prosecuting those who have committed crimes, some of them quite heinous, against our most vulnerable, our children and the elderly; drugs are also on the rise in our county. We need an aggressive D.A. who will drive cases to completion to avoid leaving criminals on the street or in the county jail, at the county’s expense. We need a D.A. who is tough on crime and seeks justice for those in our community who have been harmed. We, the voters, have an opportunity to put more competent people to work in our county. Let us be vigilant when we evaluate the candidates and cast our votes. Let us elect leaders who are capable and committed to achieve the future we want for ourselves and our children.

By Margo McCutcheon, Educator/Interpreter, Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site The Christmas tree is up, the garlands are hanging, and the candles are batterypowered at the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site this holiday season. Join us on December 7, 2023, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. as we have our annual Holiday Open House! Enjoy first floor self-guided tours of the Rayburn House decorated for Christmas, a holiday the Rayburn family celebrated. Stop by our Visitor Center for some hot apple cider and sweet treats before making some popsicle stick ornaments to take home. This event is free to attend, and all are welcome! Because this event occurs on December 7th, you will experience the joy the holiday season can bring to everyone amidst the tragedy that was the Japanese military’s attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941.

Sam Rayburn did more than just listen to the news of the attack – he went to work in his role as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on December 8th, presiding over the emergency joint session of Congress alongside Vice President Henry A. Wallace. Rayburn introduced President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the assembled members of Congress that day and heard Roosevelt’s famous “Day of Infamy” speech along with other Americans as they listed over the radio. Later, Rayburn signed the declaration of war against the Empire of Japan and also gifted the gavel he used during the proceedings to Irving Swanson, the reading clerk for the U.S. House of Representatives. This declaration as well as the war declarations that came against the nations of Germany and Italy on December 11th officially took the U.S. into World War II (1939-1945). Americans continued to celebrate the holidays even

though these holidays looked different because of rationed foodstuffs and materials. Rationed materials meant no traditional ornaments, so handmade ornaments became the norm. Can’t make it to us on Thursday night? We are having a paper Christmas ornament craft on Saturday, December 9th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. as well. The crafting activity is free, but tours of the house will cost admission and begin on the hour from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The Sam Rayburn House is located at 890 W. State Hwy 56 in Bonham, TX. Call us at 903-5835558 or email Margo. McCutcheon@thc.texas. gov for more information. Visit our website at www. visitsamrayburnhouse.com or follow us on social media to stay updated about these and other upcoming events at the Sam Rayburn House (including Sam Rayburn Day on January 6th).

These signs displayed where work is in progress or finished.. Road Work updates for Week ending 11/25/2023 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. Being Thanksgiving week the team only had three days to work and some of that time was spent bringing equipment back to the precinct barn for maintenance. We are having a 90 day update on where we are for Precinct One on December 16, 2023 at 8:30 a.m. at the Fannin County Multipurpose Complex. This is not a political event, only a chance to see what has been done by the team and the volunteer group. We will outline our plan going

forward also. For the week ending November 18, 2023 the team was able to grade the following county roads: 2015, 2025, 2030, 4040, and 4045. Finished tree trimming on CR 2000 and CR 2005. A downside to owning and using a piece of equipment like the tree trimmer is the maintenance cost associated with it. Based on the number of hours used to date we need to change the hydraulic fluid in the cutter, the blades, and the filters: a total of over $1,000 in cost. We did not get here in a day, week, or even year and it will take a dedicated team of employee's like we have currently time to correct the issues. Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One 903-965-7030

NOTE: All Commissioners are encouraged to submit updates from their Precinct. Publication is free as a service to County residents and their Commissioner.

number of dogs have made it to their late 20s. How can a dog possibly live that long? Well, diet has a lot to do with it, I believe. Ideally, we really should be cooking for our dogs. I actually did that for my last dog, and she lived to be 17. I fed her raw vegetables, fruit, greens, eggs, meat, beans, lentils, rice and potatoes. This basically invalidates the whole notion some dog owners have of priding themselves on "never giving their dog people food". When you look at a bag of dog food, the ingredients

list should look like something you think you could actually eat! - Cooking for your dog is a giant headache however, and the dog food industry has come a long way in the last number of years. There are some pretty good dog foods out there if you're willing to put in the time to track them down. That said, they generally cost a little bit more. For me, the thing is, we already know we're going to outlive our dog...by a lot. I personally am trying to push that date out there as far as I can. I believe 20 years for most dogs is entirely possible. Especially if he's a medium to small guy. The other thing, that greatly affects your dog's longevity, is the number of chemicals he gets, to include vaccines. But I'll cover that another time. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), is the independent

group that issues guidelines for pet food, and those guidelines are approved by the FDA. But while the FDA helps the AAFCO draft its guidelines, they do nothing to enforce them. The FDA takes no action on pet food matters unless a claim is made on a label that may be fraudulent. In other words, there is no federal agency that polices the pet food industry...at all. Each state has an agricultural department that may enforce AAFCO guidelines...or not. What this means when it comes right down to it, is that the pet food industry basically regulates itself. And for the record, the AAFCO's "guidelines" could hardly be any looser. Meaning we would be appalled if we knew the sort of ingredients allowed in our dogs' food. All of this is important, and we will dig further into it next time.

Cooper EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Catfish are excellent drifting cut shad and stink bait. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 50 degrees; 2.26 feet below pool. Bass fishing has slowed after the recent cold fronts and you need to be very slow in your approach. Squarebill crankbaits and rattletraps are fair in 3-5 feet of water along the edge of grass. Texas rigs and Carolina rigs are best along the edge of grass as well in 3-7 feet of water. Suspending jerkbaits is starting to work as the water temperatures decline. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 62 degrees; 3.27 feet below pool. White bass are in 20-30 feet of water around main lake points and humps using 1 ounce slabs. Crappie are in 2530 feet of water on condos and deep water brush piles, but can be found in 15-20 feet deep on timber and brush. Jigs, hand ties and minnows are working great. A few big black bass can be found hanging out in the treetops 15-20 feet. Do not overlook rock piles, any kind of concrete and brush piles in 15-20 feet using swimbaits, Alabama rigs, Carolina rigs, and spoons. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water normal stain; 55 degrees; 1.65 feet below pool. Sand bass are good with many limits caught off the bottom in 40 feet of water with slabs with a hair jig as trailer. Blue catfish are mixed in. Catfish are good in 40 feet of water with cut chicken, cut shad and even on the slabs when targeting sandies. Bass are fair with shallow water crankbaits near rocks, or a dropshot on deeper points. Crappie are slow with a few keepers in 30-40 feet of water on the deepest parts of the brush piles with minnows. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees; 0.63 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish good and is settling into a winter pattern. The striper and white bass fishing has been good. Large schools of threadfin shad are moving out into Open water and the white bass and some hybrid striper have followed them. Targeting these open water fish can be difficult. When you find large schools you can catch them on slabs suspended in 22 feet of water. The trophy blue catfish bite has turned on. We are seeing fish up to 50 pounds landed on fresh cut gizzard shad in 20 feet. Texoma GOOD. Water normal stained; 65 degrees; 2.55 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good with gulls working active fish around main lake river ledges in 60-70 feet of water. Drift live shad or flukes suspended 30-40 feet down. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair on live shad along the bluffs, and the main lake points off the banks. Swimbaits are landing catches off the boulders and on the clay banks. Catfish are good, drifting large cut shad chunks along deep flats off the river channels in 50-60 feet of water. Bigger fish will start to move shallower with colder water temperatures. Crappie are slow on jigs and minnows fishing brush in 10-15 feet of water and around docks. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are good with daily limits under the birds. Fish midlake schools with slabs, swimbaits and live bait. There is some deadstick action. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.

Connaway. He was able to cut some hay, but he wasn’t able to get a second cutting like usual. “We went through the whole summer with at least two months of no rain and tripledigit heat, so we didn’t grow much grass and hay through the summer. We were counting on a second cutting or going in with a lot of grazing, but it was just too dry,” said Connaway, who serves on Texas Farm Bureau’s Beef Cattle Advisory Committee. “We are better than last year, though.” Because of the ongoing dry conditions, many farmers and ranchers were delayed in planting wheat and oats. But the rainfall helped improve conditions in some areas of the state. Now, Texas winter wheat is over 80% planted and nearly 70% of the crop has emerged.

“This year, we’ve been awfully dry,” Ben Scholz, Collin County wheat farmer, said. The rains brought relief, but the state is still facing drought conditions. The Texas Water Development Board’s weekly water report shows 65% of Texas remains in drought. “The rains we get are few and far between, and they’re three or five inches at one time. Things dry out, and we don’t have a lot of grass cover, and then you get the big rain and then we see more erosion. The last two years it has really been feast or famine for rain, but mostly famine,” Connaway said.

ecosystem. Guided by an excellent sense of smell, their behavior is driven largely by appetite. Fall provides their last opportunity to feast before denning up for the winter. The natural instincts to forage become a problem for bears when they find easy meals from humans, such as garbage, pet food or corn from a deer feeder. If a bear continually finds food around humans, it can become habituated, losing its fear of people and creating a potentially dangerous situation. Individuals enjoying the outdoors are encouraged to stay alert and stay together, keep dogs leashed, double bag food and trash while hiking or camping, camp safely and know what to do if you see a bear. Bear-proof garbage containers are a great option that many communities have deployed to reduce bear encounters. TPWD biologists encourage keeping trash bags in a secure location until the morning of trash pickup and feeding pets inside or limiting pet-food portions to an amount that can be consumed completely at each feeding. More information can be found on the TPWD and Bear Wise websites, including how to secure deer feeders or apiaries with electric fences and the how to use “unwelcome mats.” Unwelcome mats, made from rough wood and nails or brads, can be placed under windows, at doors and fence openings and around outdoor freezers and refrigerators to discourage bears without causing serious injury. Bears are a non-game animal that have been granted state protected status as a threatened species, so it is against the law to hunt, harass or kill them. If you see a bear, stay away and do not attempt to feed it, and notify your local police or sheriff dispatch immediately to request the local TPWD biologist or game warden.

Ingredients For A Successful Home

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

The first ingredient for a successful home is a love for God. Israel, of the Old Testament, was told to “love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might” (Deuteronomy 6:5). Joshua reminded the Israelites to “do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Joshua 22:5). Jesus taught the greatest commandment, “do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Matthew 22:37). We

are to love God, spouses, and children. The second ingredient is discipline. This is often ignored by our society. Parents must be self-disciplined. The Bible refers to this as ‘temperance’. Temperance is listed in the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Children must also be taught discipline. Solomon wrote to “Train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Paul wrote, “ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Another ingredient to a successful home is respect. Children are to be taught to respect the laws of the land. Paul informed Christians, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God” (Romans 13:1). Husbands and wives must respect one another. Older parents must be respected. The church at Ephesus received this message “Honor thy father and mother” (Ephe-

sians 6:2). Above all the word of God must be respected. The word of God informs us that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The last ingredient that we will look at in this article is ‘commitment’. When each member of the family is committed to God, there will be no selfishness, violence, dishonesty, or abuse. Paul penned these words, “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13). When each one is committed to family, there will be love, patience, and forgiveness. Peter wrote, “And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves” (1 Peter 4:8). May each of us work to ensure that our homes are successful.

Sunday Morning Re-take

“Facing Life’s Giants”

Hello everyone! The Bible teaches us in Isaiah 41:10, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” I got the inspiration for this week’s message from watching one of my favorite movies, “Facing the Giants.” The main character is a Georgia high school football coach who hasn’t had a winning season in the 6 years that he’s been head coach, and some of the fathers of the boys on the team are pushing for the principal to fire him. These are just 2 of the many adversities that he is up against. He wonders why he is going through all these problems, and then he later realizes that it’s because he has been trying to make things about himself, and wanting his accomplishments for his own vain glory. He now knows that he must put his trust in the Lord, and let Him take care of the rest. He then develops a new God-honoring team philosophy, and teaches the team to put their trust in the Lord as well. Once they realize that this is necessary, they begin to put their faith into practice, and the season

turns around for them, after having lost the first 3 games. Once they made the playoffs, they lost to the first team they faced, but when it was found out that the team they lost to cheated, they advanced in the playoffs by disqualification. They later go on to win the state championship. Also, the Lord blessed the head coach by relieving him of all of the problems he was going through. We all face giants in our lives. Fear, loneliness, doubts, just to name a few. The lesson that we can take from this is that we cannot let our fear overcome our faith. Jesus teaches us in John 16:33 that in the world, we will face tribulations, but we must be of good cheer, because He has overcome this world. In 1871, Edward Hopper (1816-1888) wrote this classic hymn that references Isaiah 41:10. “Jesus, Savior, pilot me,

Over life’s tempestuous sea: Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rocks and treach’rous shoal; Chart and compass come from Thee–Jesus, Savior, pilot me! As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild; Boisterous waves obey Thy will When Thou say’st to them, “Be still!” Wondrous Sovereign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me! When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers roar ‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest– Then, while leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me, “Fear not– I will pilot thee!” If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday! Bro. Josh Stevenson

Activities & Events: The Little Sit: December 6, 2023, 6:45am Pad-H on the West side of Hagerman NWR If you want to learn how to identify the birds of North Texas, the "Little Sit" is the perfect way to start. Modeled after Cornell's "Big Sit," a group of dedicated birders meet once a month at the end of Pad H on the West side of Hagerman NWR. An expert "bird identifier" will be present at each Sit and will keep track of the number of each species of birds observed and enter the data into eBird. The public is welcome to join us for the count--no experience is needed. We meet on the first Saturday of each month, 30 minutes before sunrise to watch the birds come into the water and begin to feed. We usually stay out for 2-3 hours, but you are welcome for all or part of the Little Sit. For more information, a map to Pad-H and to register to receive event updates (location changes, etc.) please register: http:// www.friendsofhagerman. com/LittleSit or email: friendsofhagerman@gmail. com. Reproductive Process by Mike Keck. The amazing diversity of reproductive and developmental patterns among frogs. When many people think of frog reproduction and development, they think of aquatic eggs hatching out aquatic tadpoles which develop into terrestrial adults. However, the reproductive and–especially– developmental patterns of frogs is incredibly diverse, with much of this diversity found in tropical regions. Many frogs do not lay their eggs in water, some tadpoles develop away from water, and some frogs do not have tadpoles at all. In this talk, Mike will discuss the many ways that different groups of frogs reproduce and develop. Michael Keck grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. He received his Ph.D. in Quantitative Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington, where he studied snake ecology and physiology. He has been a biology professor at Grayson College since 2001. He lives with his wife, Trish, and their dogs in Savoy, Texas. Christmas Bird Count – Saturday December 16th at 7am. Join us for a day of birding. The public is once again welcome to join this annual event to aid ornithologist in their research and meet fellow birders. Participants will be divided into groups and will explore the birds of the refuge and surrounding area. This year’s count will encompass an area 15 miles in diameter – all the way into Oklahoma in the north, Grayson Airport in the

AgriLife Today CENTRAL Sporadic rainfall brought needed relief to some areas and helped wheat and oats. Regions that did not receive rain started to notice the negative effect on small grains. Temperatures fluctuated at the beginning of the week, but the warmer start provided good growing conditions. Colder temperatures started to set in towards the end of the week. Warm-season pastures were rapidly declining due to shorter days and cooler temperatures. Common winter broadleaf weeds were being observed and flourishing. Winter pasture for grazing was doing well. Most small grains had been planted. Winter cereal acreage was less than expected. Field work for

other crops was being conducted ahead of the predicted rainfall. Hessian fly larvae were found in early planted fields and remain a concern moving forward in an isolated area. Many producers supplemented livestock with hay. Cattle remained in good body condition. EAST Drought conditions have improved in most counties. Panola County reported ponds and lakes were still dangerously low. Due to recent temperatures, warm-season grasses have gone dormant. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair. Subsoil conditions were adequate to short and topsoil conditions were adequate. Winter pastures continued to grow in many areas, providing much-needed forages for

livestock. Hay supply remained low for many producers. Livestock were doing fair to good with supplementation. Wild pig damage was still being reported. Gopher and mole control was underway. NORTH Topsoil and subsoil were reported as predominantly adequate to short in all counties. Pasture and rangelands were fair across all counties. Overnight temperatures were below freezing, with warmer temperatures during the day. Some areas received small amounts of rain. Winter pastures looked good, and additional rain was ideal for plantings that had emerged. Livestock were doing well and continue to graze when weather permitted. There were no disease or insect outbreaks reported. WEST CENTRAL Temperatures around the lower 60’s fell across the district. Some areas received light rainfall over the weekend. Soil moisture remained in good condition. A few fields were being planted with small grains. A few cotton patches were being harvested, although most were shredded for insurance purposes. The early planted winter wheat was going well and in good condition. Pecan harvest was minimal. Cool season forages were emerging in rangelands and pastures. Producers increased supplemental feeding for their herds. Cattle prices at local markets remained high.
