Press Release /December 22 NL
Dr. Hayes went to the AAEP equine vet meeting in San Antonio for her required CE continuing education and some fun. There were lec tures on reproduction, neo natal, ophthalmology, colic and bone injury. Below I’ve listed some take home infor mation from the meeting and trade show.
BONE STUDY
Dr. Sue Stover presented her years of research on bone injury of racehorses. She compared the bone to
a stick. A great force will break the stick. It you bend it every day, it will eventually break. Dr Stover discussed how the same properties can apply to bone. In racehorses, the concussion forces from routinely increasing the gal loping speed can bend and weaken the cannon bone or hip. This can result in mi crofractures in the bone, and like the stick, can cause it to break. Unfortunately, these microfractures in the bend ing bone cannot be seen on an Xray or CT scan so it is hard to diagnose. A nuclear scintigraphy scan is the only
SUDOKU
way to view the uptake of the nuclear particles by the bone, in the area of inflam mation where the bone is being damaged. There are only a few equine imaging centers that can do nuclear scans in the state.
GENTOCIN
Gentocin (gentamycin) is an injectable antibiotic that we use for infections espe cially in leg wounds. It has been found that prolonged use of high doses of Gento cin can cause hearing loss in the horse (and human).
ICSI REPRODUCTION PROCESS
ICSI is Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection. To begin the process, eggs are re trieved from the follicles on the ovary of the donor mare by an equine repro special ist. In a petri dish while us ing a powerful microscope, the sperm is injected into the egg. After incubating the egg for 8 days if an embryo develops, it is put into the recipient mare. Typically, if
12 eggs are harvested from the ovary, and ICSI is pre formed, the result is only 2 embryos. Now there is a treatment for the sperm that helps it penetrate the egg, without having to inject it into the egg. This results in a higher yielding of 6 embryos out of the 12 eggs.
VETERICYN
Vetericyn is a topical spray that kills bacteria and fungus in 2 minutes contact time. The hydrogel spray form, if frozen in your barn or trailer, becomes inactivated. The spray without the gel can withstand freezing tempera tures. It is labeled as an an timicrobial wound and skin cleanser but works well on wounds as a healing treat ment.

The Christmas Puppy
By Gregg Flowers
I know getting your kids a puppy at Christmas seems like an idyllic idea, but I’m not so sure it’s a good one. First of all, I believe your youngest child should be at least 6 years old before you get a dog. Potty training a human and a canine at the same time doesn’t make sense to me. And there’s a host of other problems around dogs and very young children I can
cover at a future date. - Having a dog brings many important lessons to children, but a puppy who makes his first appearance as a gift item at Christmas, is more likely to be thought of by your kids as an object instead of a family member. And that is not a healthy message. One of the most valuable lessons children learn from a puppy, is respect for living beings and concern for others in the form of attention to their needs. Obviously, a dog is a large re sponsibility. When a puppy’s
arrival is a planned event, it’s easier to convey the more ap propriate message to your kids that a puppy is a living family member who will contribute much, but who also will have needs the family is making a commitment to meet. Some times this important message is lost when we’re talking about a Christmas puppy.
Children’s Christmas toys, are commonly forgotten in a couple of months. Christmas puppies too often, wind up at the shelter for this very same reason. Experienced rescue workers hate the whole idea of the “Christmas dog” because they know many of those ani mals will eventually wind up in a rescue situation. - Lastly, I think it’s important to remem ber, this precious little puppy will grow into a DOG, which will require you to be commit ted to his growth and training
from the very first day. That means yes, potty training, vigi lant supervision and all the oth er details of tending to a brand new puppy in your home, starts right now. With all the activi ties occurring at Christmas, you might want to ask yourself whether or not you really want to start this journey on Christ mas day.

Gardening facts about poinsettias:
• Poinsettias bloom when the days get shorter.
• The colorful “flowers” of poinsettias are actually modified leaves called “bracts.”
• Poinsettias grow well in moist soil and temperatures between 65- and 70-degrees F.
• They can be grown outdoors during summer.
• Poinsettias are not poisonous, but the sap may cause dermatitis.
Native to Mexico, poinsettias are in the Euphorbia family and
are a popular holiday plant because of their colorful bracts (leaves).
The leaves change color in response to shorter winter days. Poinsettias are not harmful to animal or human health. But they should not be eaten.
When large quantities are ingested by animals they will have drool, vomit, and diarrhea. Skin irritation can occur when in contact with the milky white sap. Wear gloves and wash tools well to remove sap.
Indoors, put plants in a south, east, or west window where

VONDA IRENE HAMILTON
Vonda Irene Hamilton was born on February 1, 1965 to Glenda & Vurl Bland in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on October 28, 2022. Vonda became a Christian as a young girl. She learned American Sign Language when she was 19 years old and she never stopped signing.
Vonda fell in love with the Deaf community. She said that if she learned American Sign Language that it would have been a miracle because she was so clumsy, but she went on to be fluent in ASL and would always sign when she talked. Above all else, Vonda made it her mission in life to share the love of Jesus with everyone she met.
Vonda graduated from Ozark Christian College in 1988 with two Bachelor’s degrees. She then became a professor at Ozark for 5 1/2 years. She loved teaching ASL and Deaf ministry. Vonda cofounded and led a Deaf church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Vonda taught at Happy Hands, a Deaf preschool. She taught at multiple Christian academies. She spent her life teaching others from preschoolers all the way to adults. She was a gifted, creative teacher who used visuals to effectively teach an audience while having people laugh as they learned.
Vonda founded a ministry to the Deaf, Expressions of Emmanuel, which included video, outreach, and writing projects stateside and across the globe. She taught at churches, camps, conferences, and schools. She and her husband made many DVDs filled with Biblical truth in the form of Christian songs and Bible lessons in ASL. She was extremely passionate about the gospel going out to all people especially those in the Deaf community. She dedicated her life to serving the Deaf community, raising awareness for the need of the gospel to be accessible to the Deaf, even traveling internationally to make Jesus known. Vonda traveled to 47 states and 33 countries to share with others about Jesus! Even contracting malaria in Africa did not stop her engaging people from all backgrounds to make Jesus famous. Her feet are beautiful because she’s physically brought the gospel to many. Her videos and books have touched many more lives.Vonda graduated with her Master’s degree, in 2015, from Hope International University in California. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Hope International University for her work in the Deaf community and in recognition of the books she wrote. Vonda authored many award-winning children’s books. There is a long list of things that Vonda accomplished, but it is not about what she did but who she was that made her so impactful, precious, and special. Vonda made everyone she encountered feel loved and seen. She was authentically caring, loving, and genuine. Anytime she knew someone had a birthday she would go to the store and buy a cake to celebrate them. She was truly an incredible wife, mother, friend, missionary, minister, author and so much more… She opened up her life and home to others. She made friends feel like family and she always made everyone feel
