Lord. Boyd Baptist New Student Pastor We meet a couple of times 9/22/20 a week! Sundays at 9:45

7/13/21

My name is Cody Austin and I am so excited to be able to serve Boyd Baptist Church as the new Student Pastor alongside my family! I’m originally from South Texas and moved to Bonham when I was 14 years old. I started dating my now wife, Kori, the summer before sophomore year in high school. Kori has resided in Bonham since she was born and we knew early on we wanted to start a family in this area. We have a two-year-old daughter named Maggie that loves going to Boyd and has since she was 2 weeks old. Student ministry is something that has been mentioned to me for quite some time, since I

them in their journey. Kori and I came from two very different upbringings. However, we still miraculously, through our own walks in life, were led to the same decision that God is the answer. Not the distractions, not what is always the easiest, but what our Lord tells us. We feel compelled to use our life experiences to ensure these kids know that Jesus is

was a teenager actually. God led me through a series of life events that led to this personal calling on mine and my family’s heart. I intend to lead our students by the Holy Spirit and create a unified, accountable, spirit enriched group of teens that need-toknow God’s love for them and know that they have someone to walk alongside

AM and Wednesdays at 6:15 PM. Students have a chance to hang out and have fun through activities, worship in song, learn from God’s Word, and build deep relationships. We do provide transportation, so if you need a ride just contact the church office! 3707 N. State Hwy 78, Bonham, TX / 903-583-7288

Grief Share in Fannin County

By Rose Schwartz

gling with today, namely the loss of a spouse and/or other close loved one. Being one who has been fearful in times past to broach the topic of “death of a loved one”, their collected calm and genuine warmth allayed any uneasiness I may have had at the beginning of this interview. Having been brought to this area in 2018 by Boyd Baptist Church’s associate pastor to be a resource for the church, Grief Share initially began in 1998 in North Carolina and is today an international organization with thousands of grief recovery support groups across the United States and around the world. Carolyn stressed, that though the group meets at Boyd Baptist Church and features biblical concepts for healing from grief, it is nondenominational and open to all needing help in recovering from the loss of a loved one. Having lost her spouse of fifty years several years ago, Carolyn knows too well the difficulties involved in learning how to live without someone’s presence after

death takes them from you, “it feels like you’re going crazy” she said. Debbie who lost her spouse a few years ago agreed and noted that it’s like your brain has been rewired and everything just gets weird. George, whose wife also passed away a year ago, nodded in agreement and added that at these meetings it feels like “everybody is in the same lifeboat.” While discussing the Grief Share meetings there was another thing these three friends agreed on, and that was how comforting it is to meet with other people who are experiencing the same struggles you are experiencing and know you’re not alone. Carolyn explained during our interview, how Grief Share is a video-based support group and described how there are approximately 45 experts in the organization ranging from licensed psychologists, certified grief therapists, pastors, authors, professors, psychiatrists, theologians, and trauma counselors who co-produce brief video seminars viewed during the two-hour ses-

sions. A video will cover grief and recovery topics with expert interviews using real-life case studies and dramatic re-enactments. Once viewed, there is then a group discussion on the contents of the video and a time to share what is going on in your own life. After the meeting, you’re encouraged to take home your workbook where you can put in writing how you feel about the subjects discussed. Your workbook “homework” can then be shared and discussed at the next meeting or not. It is strictly up to the discretion of the participant whether they care to share their thoughts on any topic. As she explained the process, I couldn’t help but ponder on how it is actually a classroom to help you learn how to maneuver this segment of your life and how the others in attendance basically become your classmates. The leaders are known to field questions and just lend an ear when needed. Continued See Grief Share on page 5

350 degrees. Liberally grease a 9x13 metal pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, whisk together the pineapple and eggs until combined. Whisk in the sugars, oil and vanilla, followed by the dry ingredients until batter comes together. Fold in nuts, carrots and raisins until combined. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and bake 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool completely. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the cream cheese, butter and vanilla until combined and fluffy, about 1 minute. Beat in the orange juice or zest and gradually add in the powdered sugar, about one cup at a time, until mixture is light and fluffy, streaming in the heavy cream as needed. (just until the icing is the consistency that is preferred) Spread the frosting evenly over the cake and sprinkle with remaining chopped nuts. Tip: I prefer to make in a metal pan instead of glass because it seems to cook differently. If you prefer walnuts over pecans, then throw them in. Like raisins-add them. There is no wrong thing to leave out or mix in. ENJOY!! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclsales@verizon. net

quiet time with the Lord this past week, I was reminded that we live in a fallen world. Since this is true, we can expect to face trials of many kinds. We are taught that none of us are immune. In James 1:2 we are encouraged to count it a time of joy when we do. The writer is sharing with us that the difficulties have a way in helping us to grow in spiritual maturity. During the month of February I will be suggesting some ways that we can be overcomers, even as Jesus has overcome the world. My story today presents at least three of the most

severe challenges that I have ever experienced. They were among the things I faced at Stalag Luft I in my time as a prisoner of war. They were the inadequacy of our housing, the shortage of food, and an extreme winter. Nineteen men lived, ate, and slept in a room 20’ X 20’. We did our cooking, our reading, and spent our leisure time in a room poorly heated, dimly lighted, and with no indoor plumbing. A central toilet was used by 200 prisoners. The shortage of food caused me to lose weight from 172 to 115. Outside temperatures dropped to 15 degrees below zero on

is a 13-week program that lasts for 2 hours each week. There are two available schedules with a group meeting on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate those who prefer evening hours and on Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for those who prefer daytime. The cost involved in signing on for

this life-enriching 13-week program is your time and the $15.00 price of the personal workbook. The next courses will begin March 2nd and March 3rd and run through May 25th & May 26th. There will also be a special one-day, two-hour session on Sunday at Boyd Baptist Church, February 13th from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. titled “The Death of a Spouse”. This one-day special session is stand-alone and does not require a workbook. Noting that he felt immediate help when he managed to get himself to that first meeting, George, who had been married twenty-five years when his wife passed away last year, said that though he has a way to go in the process, he is very thankful for the help he has received. Carolyn advised that there are two

Bonham, TX a number of occasions. My physical needs were not met but my spiritual strength was sustained. The writer of Hebrews 12:12-13 shows our human weakness in such physical terms as beings who have weak hands, feeble knees, and lame feet. Where then can we find the strength that we need? In John 16:33 (NKJV) says “In the world you have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” When the adversities of life come, if we will get close enough to Jesus we will hear Him say “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.

times during the year these sessions are offered, in the Spring and the Fall. Though there are no summer sessions, as a result of the friendships formed during the Fall and Spring meetings, this summer many of the participants managed to meet around once a month to share a meal at one of the local restaurants. To learn more about the “Grief Share Support Group” meeting in Fannin County, you are encouraged to call the Boyd Baptist church office at 903-583-7288 or go online to www.griefshare.org. Also, Carolyn noted that during the 11:00 a.m. service at Boyd Baptist Church, Sunday, February 6th, George and Debbie will be doing a presentation about the services provided by the Grief Share Group for all who attend.

Many people think of Alzheimer’s disease as something that happens only to older people. Unfortunately, that’s not the truth. Younger Onset Alzheimer’s affects people under the age of 65. Many of these people are in their 40’s and 50’s. Younger Onset can manifest itself in any of the three stages of Alzheimer’s disease: early, middle or late. Most people living with Younger Onset have what’s called sporadic Alzheimer’s, the most common form of the disease. The reason why most cases of Younger Onset appear at a relatively young age are not well understood. Likewise, getting an accurate diagnosis can be very frustrating. The disease affects individuals differently and symptoms can vary from person to person. Doctors and other health care providers generally don’t search for Alzheimer’s in younger people. If there are symptoms they may be misdiagnosed as stress. Different professionals may come to conflicting diagnoses. It’s important to note that the disease is not a one size fits all. If you are experiencing memory problems you should get a comprehensive medical evaluation with a physician specializing in Alzheimer’s. A thorough medical exam and possibly cognitive tests may be required, as well as a neurological exam and/or brain imaging. Your local Alzheimer’s Association can provide you with a referral. Be sure and keep an accurate log of any cognitive difficulties or symptoms of memory loss you can show your provider. Finally, there is no single one test that will confirm the presence of Alzheimer’s disease. Only a full and comprehensive medical evaluation can lead to a diagnosis. The sooner you have an

accurate diagnosis, the sooner you can begin planning what you can do to ease the impact on you and your family throughout the course of the disease. Call our 24/7 Helpline anytime: 1.800.272.3900. Meanwhile, you can always get the latest information about the Association’s COVID-19 guidelines for Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers in long-term or community-based care settings here: https://alz.org/ professionals/professionalproviders/coronavirus-covid-19-tips-for-dementiacaregivers

The invocation was led by Pastor Robert Eades of the United Pentecostal Church in Savoy. Pledges were led by Carolyn Rogers and Shonda Magness. 4. Introductions: There were no introductions 5. Discussion, consideration, and action regarding Courthouse Renovation: Judge Moore read the update as follows: EXTERIOR – Complete exterior outlets and lighting in sidewalks; Install Decomposed Granite around the building; Pour

Hello everyone! We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning! The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 2:21, “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” God has called us to follow after Him in our lives. He calls different people to serve Him in different ways. He wants us to use the talents that He’s given us for His will and glorification. I’m once again drawn to the parable of the talents in Matthew chapter 25. Some of us are singers, preachers, teachers, and there are many other ways that the

Lord uses us in His calling. I thank God for the privilege of serving Him as a part of the ministry of our church. For our hymn this week, I turn to the writing of Mrs. Cecil Frances Alexander. She wrote this classic hymn back in 1852. Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild, restless sea; day by day his voice invites me, saying “Christian, follow me!” In our joys and in our sorrows, days of toil and hours of ease, still he calls, in cares and pleasures, “Christian, love me more than these.” Jesus calls us! In your

mercy, Savior, help us hear your call; give our hearts to your obedience, serve and love you best of all! If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church! Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day! Josh Stevenson Central Baptist Church Bonham, TX https://www.facebook.com/ cbcfannin

Pictures from left to right: Judge Randy Moore, Judge Charles Butler, Director Brandon Caffee, Bill Wilson, Kim Tillete-Pool, Landon Liebel, Judge Lauri Blake Press Release - Texoma Health Foundation Board Member Bill Wilson and Accounting Manager Kim Tillete-Pool presented a check in the amount of $25,000 to Fannin County Juvenile Services Director Brandon Caffee. The funds were awarded as a result of a grant application submitted by Director Caffee on behalf of Juvenile Services to obtain funding to expand the Liberty Resources Program (“Liberty”). Liberty is a counseling program serving families with teenagers in the juvenile justice system. Liberty Resources program provides counseling services to the youth as well as the parents. The focus is to improve outcomes for the family unit. Most of the time the services are provided in the home. Parents receive instruction on new or improved parenting techniques and coaching as the new techniques are applied in the home. The juvenile also receives counseling and support to address issues the juvenile is facing at the time. “Juvenile Services has been using the Liberty Resources

program for 5 years and it has been one of the most effective tools to assist rehabilitation of juveniles and support their families for us in Fannin County,” reported Director Caffee. On hand for the presentation was the Fannin County Juvenile Board, which includes members County Judge Randy Moore, County Court at Law Judge Charles Butler, and Chairman of the Board, District Judge Laurine J. Blake. Additionally, probation officers Ashely Wilson and Landon Liebel were in attendance. “I rely heavily on the support provided by Liberty Resources counselor Lindsey Pierce during the course of time a juvenile is on conditions of release from the court or placed on juvenile probation. The juvenile and parents of the juvenile benefit from the one-on-one counseling and guidance this program provides,” stated Judge Blake. “I’m grateful Texoma Health Foundation has taken this step to expand the beneficial serves Liberty provides us in Fannin County.”

Honey Grove advanced to the Region II-2A area round in 2021 -- upsetting 13-2A champion Alvord in its bi-district game. Four first-half wins this season have the Warriors again in the thick of the race for one of the four available postseason berths in 14-2A boys’ basketball. The 2022 boys’ basketball postseason is scheduled to start with bi-district play Feb. 21-22. Note: Honey Grove defeated Tom Bean, 53-43, on Jan. 25 for its fifth district win.

UIL to release new districts for football, v’ball, hoops on Feb. 3

By Rich Hilliard

New University Interscholastic League district alignments for football, volleyball and basketball will be announced on Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. on www.uiltexas.org/alignments. While no Fannin County schools will change classifications in the 2022-24 biennial realignment, enrollment decreases elsewhere will affect current local district groupings in the aforementioned sports. Class 3A-I Bonham will

lose -- and 3A-II Leonard will likely regain -- Howe as a football district rival. Both Fannin schools will possibly retain Howe for district competition for other team sports both currently play. Leonard will lose -- and 2A-I’s Trenton and/or Honey Grove may gain -- Whitewright as a football district rival. The Warriors have played Whitewright in nondistrict competition the last few seasons and in district play earlier this century. Celeste will not be a district football opponent for either

Honey Grove or Trenton for the next two years, as the Blue Devils will drop into 2A-II. Either or both Fannin schools could retain Celeste in the other district sport -basketball -- all three play. Celeste has been a district football opponent most recently for Honey Grove during the current football alignment and Trenton during the previous one. District alignments for other team sports for 2022-24 will be announced later this school year.

IVANHOE -- It’s been almost four years since Sam Rayburn reached the Region II-2A quarterfinals in boys’ basketball. Three district wins during the first half of District 14-2A boys’ basketball this season have made the Rebels a contender for a postseason return. The district victory total already tops last year’s twowin effort in 14-2A play -which followed consecutive Second-year Sam Rayburn winless records for Sam head boys’ basketball coach Rayburn in its previous disJustin Tice directs the Rebels trict grouping. on Nov. 22 during boys’ nondistrict action.

During the coming year, we will share the success stories from those who worked hard to make this project a reality. We look forward to 2022 as a year of culmination and commemoration as we enter the home stretch of this historic project, which has been so many decades in the making. Now, it’s Mother Nature’s turn to bring the rainfall needed and fill Bois d’Arc Lake.

Bois d’Arc Lake fills up near finished FM 897 bridge and boat ramps service area at a critical time to meet current and future needs. Once in operation, the new water treatment plant and pipeline will expand our capabilities to serve more than 2 million people in our region with clean, reliable water for decades to come. When the lake is ready and safe to open for recreation, it will also offer new opportunities for fishing,
