February Events at the Sam Rayburn House: Valentine’s Day Tours and Presidents’ Day Quiz

By Margo McCutcheon, Educator/Interpreter, Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site

This February at the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site in Bonham, Texas, we are having special Valentine’s Day themed tours and a President’s

Day event! Join us on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:00 p.m. to hear a special, guided Valentine’s Day tour about the Rayburn

family. This is different from our regular tours in that we will use oral histories and Rayburn biographies to discuss the love lives of the Rayburn family. This includes the familial love they had with one other, Sam Rayburn’s marriage to Metze Jones, and the love their friends had for the Rayburns. Regular tour rates apply for these two special tours. Reservations are not required to join these tours, but space is limited, so contact us if you want to make sure that you get to hear these rarely discussed stories! On Saturday, February 17th, we are having our Hands on History: Presidents’ Day activity from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Test your knowledge of the presidents Sam Rayburn worked with by taking part in a special quiz game! Participation

07/02/19

in this event is free of charge, but regular tour rates apply for tours of the Sam Rayburn House. The Sam Rayburn House is open from Tuesday – Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Tours of the home are on the hour from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. The special Valentine’s

Day tours are only at 2:00 p.m. on February 14th. Contact us at 903-583-5558 to reserve a spot on one of our tours, or if you have any questions about the Sam Rayburn House or our events. Visit our website at www.visitsamrayburnhouse. com for more information.

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? Located at Calvary Baptist Church • 913 S. 5th St. Bonham, TX cbcbonham.org/celebraterecovery Email: info@cbcbonham.org

6/2/20 Courtesy Photo BISD Press Release - We had something awesome happen and would love to share it with you: This past week, Bonham ISD received an amazing sponsorship from the Elegoo company who provided BISD schools with 3D Printers. Elegoo generously donated 16 3D printers, worth nearly $8,000, for distribution across BISD campuses. The 3D Printers will be found in art classes, the robot-

ics program, gift and talented rooms, science classrooms, libraries, and the special education rooms. This incredible donation will allow our students and staff to advance their knowledge of technology in the newest form, inspire creativity, and innovate minds. We are so excited, and can’t wait to see what our students and staff create with the 3D Printers.

“Kyle came to my office with intentions of running for District Judge. He explained his years of experience with criminal law and jury trials. Kyle also told me what he thought a District Judge’s job is and how his office will be run. But most importantly, Kyle advised me how the relationship between his office, the District Attorney’s office, the Defense, Local Law enforcement and the victims of crimes would be one of his top priorities. I was on the same page with everything Kyle presented and believe he is the best choice to serve our county. I proudly endorse Kyle Shaw for Fannin County District Judge.” - Brian Meserole, Chief of Police, Leonard Texas

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Notification

Press Release - Holy Trinity Episcopal Church invites you to join us for Shrove Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall. We celebrate Shrove Tuesday (February 13th) with a pancake dinner the day before Ash Wednesday. We celebrate Lent as the season of the 40 days and 40 nights our Lord spent in the wilderness. As Episcopalians, we will focus on drawing closer to God with an emphasis on prayer and simplicity. The word shrove is a form of the English word shrive, which means to give absolution for someone's sins

by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday was named after the custom of Christians to be "shriven" before the start of Lent. Originally, it was a service of confession. This has largely been omitted in modern practice, where it has been replaced with a subdued celebration before the austerities of Lent. We are located at 7th and Star Streets in Bonham, Texas. Holytrinitybonhamtx.org. All are welcome!

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) Take action for yourself and be there for others.

Road Work updates for Week ending 2/8/2024 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. The weather has cooperated over the past week and we have been able to accomplish quite a bit on the worst roads after the cold and rain. Busy

ees this week, Amanda Agee. Amanda has worked as a grader operator for the past few months and we get calls about how well she does her job. She is extremely conscientious about doing a good job and will take the initiative to fix a problem without being asked. She has no problems in picking up brush or clearing out culverts on days the graders cannot be on the roads. Please thank her if you see her on the road. Please email me at dmcqueen@fanninco.net if you have a culvert that is crushed and allowing water to run

county roads 1245, 1265, 1410, 2010 and 4040 have all received rock and grading this past week on the worst spots. Over 40 loads of rock have been put out this past week on these and others. Brush cutting on county roads in the Ivanhoe area and CR 2025 has been done. Due to the wet conditions we are picking up the larger limbs by hand as the skid steer cannot be used. Potholes have been filled on many of the blacktop roads also. We would like to highlight one of our valued employ-

high school or be a Fannin County resident. The applicant must submit a letter and a transcript. The letter must include a thorough overview of her background, current educational status and plan for the future. The deadline for applications will be April 5, 2024. It should be mailed to Diann Lane at 801 CR 2780, Honey Grove, TX 75446.

Sunday Morning Re-Wind

Hello everyone! One of my favorite scriptures is John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Putting our faith and trust in Jesus Christ is the best decision that we could ever make in our lives. He died on the cross so that we could have the gift of salvation and eternal life through Him. As I’ve said before, why anyone would not want to accept these gifts from Him is beyond me. When it comes to our service for Him, at times we might be afraid of what He calls us to do. If we step out in faith, and leave the

The Torah

by Dawn McGee “In the beginning God created...” In the Hebrew text, a word sits next to “God” that isn’t translated. Used over 9,500 times in the OT, it’s sometimes translated as “he, the, or whom,” but mostly it’s skipped over entirely. The word is “eht”, made from the Hebrew letters alef and tahv. In Paleo-Hebrew (picture-form of writing) the alef is drawn as an ox’s head with horns, meaning “strength.” The tahv is drawn like an “X” meaning “mark, sign, or cross” (as in marking the spot.) Put the 2 together and it means: “strength of the cross.” This is what John 1:1 is talking about. The alef is also the 1st letter, and the tahv is the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Rev 1:8 shows the Hebrew Messiah speaking to a Hebrew man (in Hebrew) proclaiming Himself to BE the Aleft-Tahv, (Greek: alpha-omega) that is used so often in the Torah and Prophets. Examples of the alef-tahv (al-

I hope and pray that this is your testimony. “I care not today what the morrow may bring, If shadow or sunshine or rain, The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything, And all of my worry is vain. Living by faith in Jesus above, Trusting, confiding in His great love; From all harm safe in His sheltering arm, I’m living by faith and feel no alarm.” Bro. Josh Stevenson

pha-omega) in Scripture: Zech 12:10 “they will look upon aleftahv they pierced.” Gen: 37:12 “Then (Joseph’s) brothers went to feed alef-tahv’s flock...” Ex 26:1 “You shall make aleftahv’s Tabernacle...” Within this Book, much can be learned from the chaotic lives of Abraham and his descendants. In the rivalry between Jacob’s 2 sister-wives, Father God gives us a message about His Son. This message is seen in the meanings of the Hebrew names of Jacob’s 12 sons and one daughter: In order of their birth... “SEE, A SON! If you HEAR Him you’ll be JOINED/ATTACHED TO ME. PRAISE Him, for He’s your JUDGE over MY WRESTLINGS/STRUGGLES with you. His CROWD/TROOP will find HAPPINESS for He will (lift) MY WAGES/PRICE for you, and bring your DOWRY/DWELLING/HABITATION with JUSTICE. (Let Him) ADD you TO ME, for He is the SON OF MY RIGHT HAND.” Next week.... Exodus

The Royal Law

12-18-18 Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Do we ever get tired of ‘trying’ to do the right thing? Do we get tired of ‘putting forth the effort’ of doing the right thing? The Royal Law is a principle as old as time. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, all that have served Jehovah and that still serve the one and only Creator, all that desire forgiveness, all that desire to be a child of God, must practice ‘The Royal Law’. It is the great principle for relationships with families, fellow man, brethren in Christ and with ourselves. Under the law of Moses, the Israelites were instructed, “Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but

thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD” (Leviticus 6:31). Jesus instructed, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12). Luke recorded the words of Jesus, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31). James helps us to understand that the royal law is to be applied to all people. “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors” (James 2:8-9). We also find that our spiritual health depends on following the ‘Royal Law’. Jesus applied the royal law to for-

giveness in teaching to pray “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6:12) and “if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15). The Lord also applied the ‘Royal Law’ in being a child of God. Jesus taught “as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31), then the Son of God goes on to say “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil” (Luke 6:35). Let us endeavor to practice the “Royal Law”.

A Third Great Spiritual Awakening? Here? Now? By Lyn Holly- Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church This coming Sunday, February 18, at 5:00 PM believers will gather at 7th and Main Baptist Church from all over Fannin County for the Fannin County Call to Prayer for Revival and Spiritual Awakening. Our culture is in desperate need of revival. In fact, I am convinced our nation will not survive long without it. Wickedness and depravity abound. As a culture, we have lost our way because we have departed from God’s Word. In my previous two articles, we have seen how God brought two great spiritual awakenings in our nation’s history during times like we are in now. Although, I am convinced we are plunging deeper into wickedness and immorality than ever before. The first step in praying for corporate revival is for each one of us personally and individually getting our hearts right with God. Evangelist Gypsy Smith was asked what the secret of revival is. He said, “Go home. Take a piece of chalk. Draw a circle around yourself. Then pray, ‘O Lord, revive everything inside this circle.’” Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” 2 Timothy 2:21 says, “Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.” Personal revival is the pathway to corporate revival. Let’s get our hearts ready personally and privately before coming together next Sunday to pray for revival in our community and nation. It is also important to note that the group of pastors with whom I have been working and planning this call to prayer has adopted Billy Graham’s Evangelistic Association’s statement of faith and core beliefs. It is vitally important that those who gather with us are like-minded and are in doctrinal agreement in key areas of the Christian faith.

Here is the statement of faith: •We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God revealing the love of God to the world. 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; John 3:16. ·•We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19; John 10:30; Ephesians 4:4-6. ·•We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-4 and 1:29; Acts 1:11 and 2:22-24; Romans 8:34; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:5-11; Hebrews 1:1-4 and 4:15. ·•We believe that all men everywhere are lost and face the judgment of God, that Jesus Christ is the only way of salvation, and that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, repentance of sin and faith in Jesus Christ results in regeneration by the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, we believe that God will reward the righteous with eternal life in heaven, and that He will banish the unrighteous to everlasting punishment in hell. Luke 24:46-47; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:23; 2 Corinthians 5:10-11; Ephesians 1:7 and 2:8-9; Titus 3:4-7. ·•We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, whose indwelling enables the Christian to live a godly life. John 3:5-8; Acts 1:8 and 4:31; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Galatians 5:16-18; Ephesians 6:12; Colossians 2:6-10. ·•We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; the saved unto the resurrection of eternal life and the lost unto the resurrection of damnation and eternal punishment.

1 Corinthians 15:51-57; Revelation 20:11-15. ·We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and that all true believers are members of His body, the church. 1 Corinthians 12:12,27; Ephesians 1:22-23. ·•We believe that the ministry of evangelism (sharing and proclaiming the message of salvation only possible by grace through faith in Jesus Christ) and discipleship (helping followers of Christ grow up into maturity in Christ) is a responsibility of all followers of Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Romans 10:9-15; 1 Peter 3:15. ·•We believe God’s plan for human sexuality is to be expressed only within the context of marriage, that God created man and woman as unique biological persons made to complete each other. God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society. For this reason, we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female. Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:5-6; Mark 10:6-9; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9. ·•We believe that we must dedicate ourselves to prayer, to the service of our Lord, to His authority over our lives, and to the ministry of evangelism. Matthew 9:3538; 22:37-39, and 28:18-20; Acts 1:8; Romans 10:9-15 and 12:20-21; Galatians 6:10; Colossians 2:6-10; 1 Peter 3:15. ·•We believe that human life is sacred from conception to its natural end; and that we must have concern for the physical and spiritual needs of our fellowmen. Psalm 139:13; Isaiah 49:1; Jeremiah 1:5; Matthew 22:37-39; Romans 12:20-21; Galatians 6:10. I am looking forward to gathering with you next Sunday! Please, God, send another great spiritual awakening right here in Fannin County!

In a medium bowl, combine 3 c. of white chocolate chips and 1 and ½ tsp. vegetable oil. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir for 15 seconds and then microwave another 15 seconds. Stir until melted and smooth. If needed, return to the microwave for a little longer. (Bursts of 15 seconds. Stirring for 10 seconds stirring in between each burst). Pour the melted and smooth white chocolate over the snack mix. Working quickly, gently stir until all ingredients are coated in white chocolate and then quickly transfer to the prepared baking sheet and spread into one even layer. Immediately add the remaining Valentine's M&M's on top and optional sprinkles. Optional Step: Melt the last ¼ c. white chocolate chips in the microwave and then transfer them to a small plastic bag. Cut the tip off the bag and pipe stripes across the white chocolate snack mix. Allow white chocolate to firm up and harden at room temperature or place in the fridge until firm, about 10-20 minutes. Break into pieces and serve. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclweesie@gmail.com

H.G.Dulaney Park Receives Donation

News from Fannin County Amateur Radio Club

Winter Field Day 2024 Is A Wrap

American Legion Post 283 members present a check to Beautification Association president Mary Norris to be used toward the purchase of the H.G. Dulaney Park sign.

Beautification Association members proudly hold the check received from the Glaser Family Charitable Foundation to be used toward the purchase of the H.G. Dulaney Park sign. Press Release - The Ector Beautification Association (EBA) would like to recognize the recent generous donations of American Legion Post 283 and the Glaser Charitable Foundation. Both donations will go toward the purchase of the sign for the entrance to the H.G. Dulaney Park in Ector. This will be a large, arched metal sign with the inscription “H.G. Dulaney Park”. With these generous donations the sign will soon be ordered and installed. The park currently boasts playground equipment, a walking track, picnic tables and benches. The Associa-

tion’s goal has been to add a pavilion and sign to the park. The pavilion can be used by the public in hosting birthday parties, reunions, church events, and many other activities. Many businesses, organizations, and individuals have donated in the past year. Because of these donations and EBA fundraisers, the pavilion and sign will both soon become a reality. The Ector Beautification Association is a 501 (C) 3 organization that was established to enhance the beauty of the town and provide a park for all ages to enjoy.

Fannin County Retired Teachers January News and School Personnel Association 10/3/23 from Oakwood5/26/20 Cemetery 10-6-20

Celebrating Valentine’s Day wasn’t the only treat enjoyed by retired educators at the Bonham Public Library on March 6. The icing on the cupcake was a very delightful and informative presentation by library director, Jennifer Reeves. Her effervescence and enthusiasm carried us through the bitter-sweet story of the public library restoration. Jennifer concluded her program with a tour through the library and some Q and A time. The local chapter of TRTA also recognized two outstanding members for their community volunteer service. Please join the Fannin County Retired Teachers and School Personnel Association at the March 5th meeting at 2PM. which will be in the Williams Educational Building library behind the First Presbyterian Church of Bonham. Our guest will be Dean Price, author of “Life and Times of Wildwood Dean".

Press Release - January can often be a bleak month, but even in its starkness, Oakwood Cemetery remains a beautiful and serene place. The area of the Wilks - Cagle burials, which were moved to Oakwood from the Bois d'Arc Lake, is almost complete. The old headstones had to be cleaned and repaired. Those people who did not have headstones received a 1’ x 2’ marker idetifying each person as either an adult or child. Paris Monument--who did an exceptional job on this project--is owned by Kent and Joni Erwin, descendants of the original Erwin family, friends of Davy Crockett and the first settlers of Honey Grove proper. This is a reminder that March is our first month to clean the cemetery of all seasonal and

faded flowers or any other debris on the graves. We will begin cleaning the first of March. If you would like to keep your seasonal flowers, they need to be removed by the end of February, before disposal begins in March. There is not a lot else to report for January—except that

thousands and thousands of leaves were shredded and removed from the cemetery. This helps keep the snakes from taking up residence. Memorials for January: Lillian Scott, Ricky Hevron, Beverly Herriage, Gene Diedrick, Mary Pauline Yarbrough, Billy Jack Kilpatrick

EXPOSING THE “FAKE NEWS” THE REAL TRUTH BEHIND DISTRICT ATTORNEY PERFORMANCE

Fannin County, like every other county in Texas, is in the heat of the political season as candidates vie for votes for many coveted positions of elected county officials. In a small county like Fannin, where everyone knows everyone, you would think a candidate would stick to facts that could be verified rather than choosing to resort to the exhausting and annoying mudslinging and “fake news” we see at the local, state and federal levels. In a small town, if you are worthy, you can win an election simply by telling the voters the benefits that would be gained by electing that person to office. It seems natural to conclude a person would only resort to slander and “fake news” if a person had no fresh ideas or visions for positive change or appropriate experiences/skill sets. In this 2024 election season, there’s one local candidate among them all who alone has chosen to go with a slanderous smear campaign rather than just telling the voters his vision for improvement and change. This is especially egregious and unnecessary when the incumbent is not seeking reelection, and the slanderous rhetoric seems intended to destroy the reputation of a man who has faithfully and effectively dedicated himself to the service of this community for the last two decades. Mr. Candidate, why don’t you just tell us why you are the best person for the job and why you think the most qualified? The fake news attempts to cast dispersions on the work product of the current office holder going so far as to report extreme ineptitude with absolutely no data to back up a single word. How easy it is to say whatever you choose when there’s no opportunity for your slander to be challenged. Here are the results of my 19 years in office. Compare it with what is being said by some and then you decide. As you can see, most cases were resolved without a jury trial. The vast majority of jury trials in Fannin County are criminal cases that can’t be resolved by a plea. I have a list of the criminal cases tried by Fannin County jurors for each year of my service along with the results. That list is 13 pages long and contains the case number, charge, verdict and sentence—both guilty and not guilty. Starting in 2009 I included the date of each verdict. I didn’t make this list to respond to fake claims and misstatement of fact. I started this and similar lists my very first year in office so that I could track our office performance to identify problems and aim for improvement. If you would like a copy you may come by my office and I will review it with you. We are proud of our 19 years of service to Fannin County. Come by and you can see documents that back up that service in keeping Fannin County a safe place to raise your family. Please call 903-583-7448 for an appointment. I will even give you a guided tour of our temporary working conditions these past seven years. Our office address is 800 East Second Street, Bonham. So in summary, when you hear a candidate self-righteously accuse the DA’s Office of poor work product you will be able to clearly see that this statement is not only grossly misleading but is a perfect example of deliberate “fake news” and attempts to slander not just the current District Attorney but his entire team of dedicated attorneys and support staff. This could apply to the 336th District Court and Sheriff’s races as well.

2023

In 2023, there were 233 new felony indictments returned by the two Fannin County Grand Juries. In that same year we disposed of 367 felony cases – either by trial or plea agreement; 342 cases were resolved by plea agreement. • 21 juries were called • 18 juries were impaneled • 25 cases were considered by Fannin County jurors • 9 juries returned a verdict for the state • 9 juries returned acquittal verdicts • 2 mistrials • 1 busted panel Included in the 342 cases resolved were some notable successes: * Above information is on file with • Lincoln Chaney—12 cases of child pornography sentences or indecency resulting in 20 years in prison in each case plus a 40-year sentence for aggravated sexual Fannin County District Clerk assault. • Lauren Hopfenspirger—In January there was a week-long Bench Trial on punishment which resulted in two 18-year sentences and one 10-year sentence. In a live stream video—in an attempt to coerce a boyfriend (the father of the baby)—Lauren Hosfenspirger tortured her 11-month old daughter by impeding her breath. She did this by holding this tiny baby girl under water (including her face) three times for 6 seconds, 2 seconds, and 8 seconds. Throughout the entire time this infant’s arms and legs were flailing wildly in an attempt to breathe. Hopfenspirger paid no heed to her child’s suffering. • In a complex construction fraud case, the jury awarded the victim damages in the amount of $258,000, a first for Fannin County. • As an aside – Our hot check collection efforts since January 1, 2005 – January 1, 2024 are: - Total number of checks filed with my office were 5,929 for $2,509,444.77 - Total number of checks collected by my office were 4,748 for $985,346.68 which was returned to the merchants and citizen victims

Fannin County First!

GARY TUCKER for

Commissioner PCT 3 After raising a family and selling software for 25 years, I moved to Telephone. After only three years I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back and moved my whole world to Fannin County. I have 25 years of being assigned a geographic territory and producing millions of dollars of revenue including here in Fannin County. The resources we have, two lakes, several downtown areas, a sportsman’s paradise. I was born in Louisiana and we have a sportsman’s paradise right here in Fannin County! Fannin County offers the best places for a business to succeed. Businesses that will employ long-term, benefits, and retirement types of jobs. I promise to use every bit of my experience to ensure Fannin County comes first and let our resources start paying us back. • Increase Revenue • Improve & Maintain Roads • Preserve the Integrity of our Resources • Better Infrastructure, Better Emergency Resources • 25 years of proven, geographical revenue producing experience, including here in Fannin County. • I understand past sacrifices and negotiations that did not have FANNIN COUNTY FIRST! On President’s Day, Feb. 19th @ 11:30am Bois D’arc General Store at Nana’s Place - 4831 E. FM 1396, Telephone

We will serve BBQ and have live music free for Precinct 3 residents. Come listen to Gary Tucker speak about his candidacy & the future of Fannin County

• I promise to predict, generate and produce revenue while maintaining the great job people before us have done. • I will be more proactive rather than reactive. Political Ad Paid for by Gary Tucker Campaign, Treasurer Gary Tucker

ELECT

ROBERT WILLIAMS For CONSTABLE PRECINCT 1 Endorsement for Robert Williams I am proud to endorse Robert Williams for Fannin County Constable, Precinct One. I knew Robert as an investigator with the SPCA. When he applied for an investigator position with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, I knew he would be an asset to our team. Robert served our country as a Marine and wanted to continue to serve Fannin County. When I was asked by Judge Cunningham, if I felt Robert Williams should be appointed to the remaining term of Constable, Precinct One, there was no doubt that between the two choices he was clearly the ONLY choice that I could make in good conscience. Robert is very knowledgeable in applying the law while ensuring that constitutional rights are not violated. His investigation skills show him to be calm, methodical, thorough and forward thinking to ensure all elements of the law are met before filing cases. Robert has a strong desire to learn and be the most well rounded law enforcement officer that he can be. He works well with others and has always been respectful and professional. Most of all, Robert has never given me a reason to doubt his honesty, integrity or commitment to the safety of this county. Lastly, he understands that the law applies to himself exactly the same as it applies to every citizen of this county. Please join me in electing Robert Williams as Constable, Precinct One on March 5, 2024. Respectfully, Mark Johnson, Fannin County Sheriff

Renewed rivalries and much more travel will be in store, when Bonham returns to Class 4A for the 2024-25 and 202526 school years, per the biennial realignment results released Feb. 1 by the University Interscholastic League. New districts for football, volleyball and basketball were posted on the UIL's website and social media, with other sports groupings to be released later during the spring semester. Bonham will be in District 5-4A-II for football with Caddo Mills, Farmersville, Gainesville, Krum, Sanger and Van Alstyne. It will be the same district number as when Bonham last competed in 4A football in 2017, but only Caddo Mills will equate a common district opponent from then. All others from that previous grouping -- Melissa, Aubrey, Nevada Community and Celina -- have since been upgraded either in classification or division due to continuing population growth in Collin and Denton counties. The remainder of Bonham's new upcoming 5-4A-II football opponents have previous-

ly been district or non-district competition for the Purple Warriors during the last 32 years. Meanwhile, 14-4A volleyball and basketball for Bonham will include these opponents: Paris, North Lamar, Pittsburg, Sulphur Springs, Texarkana Pleasant Grove. Leonard will change numbers in football -- into District 7-3A-II from 8-3A-II -- and now play Callisburg and S&S Consolidated, in addition to holdovers Bells, Blue Ridge, Gunter and Howe. Lone Oak moved into 9-3A-II. S&S will replace Bonham for Leonard as a district opponent in volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball and other spring sports in 11-3A, which will continue also to include: Bells, Blue Ridge, Gunter, Howe and Pottsboro. Trenton will remain in 6-2AI for football and gain Wolfe City as a district opponent, in addition to holdovers Alvord, Nocona, Tioga, Tom Bean and Whitewright. Honey Grove will stay in 9-2A-I for football, playing Omaha Paul Pewitt instead of Wolfe City, in addition to holdovers Alba-Golden, Bogata Rivercrest, Como-Pickton, Cooper and Quinlan Boles.

Sam Rayburn and Trenton will not be assured of postseason volleyball trips like the last two seasons in a four-team district, as the duo will now be a part of the six-team 10-2A with Collinsville, Tioga, Tom Bean and Whitewright. District 14-2A basketball will stay the same: Celeste, Honey Grove, Sam Rayburn, Merit Bland, Tom Bean, Trenton, Whitewright, Wolfe City. Savoy will gain Laird Hill Leveretts Chapel as a district opponent in 10-1A-I six-man football, in addition to holdovers Campbell, Gilmer Union Hill and Saint Jo. Fannindel will change district numbers -- from 9-1A-II to 101A-II -- for six-man football and have different opponents -- Bowie Gold-Burg and Forestburg. Dodd City, Ector and Savoy will remain together for district volleyball, change from 19-1A to 21-1A and again be assured of postseason trips. Dodd City, Ector, Fannindel and Savoy will also stay together for basketball with Campbell and Miller Grove, but now will be in 19-1A instead of 23-1A. Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy of Greenville and Fate schools will move into a 2A district.

Census Bureau and noted the court would double check the markings and get back with the Census Bureau with their findings. DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION AND ACTION ITEMS: 10. Approve Fannin County Purchasing Procedures – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane led a discussion regarding the fine tuning of the policy contained in the purchasing manual that should be completed and presented to the Purchasing Board later in the month. She noted a condensed version of the policy available for use immediately in a “cheat sheet” for county department heads. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve the procedures with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed. 11. Update on price negotiations and possible action regarding payment to Document Logistix for software used by County Law Enforcement Agencies through October 2024 – Purchasing Agent: Ms. Lane commented on successful negotiations (assisted by input from citizen Chris Wilson) that resulted in Document Logistix agreeing to an original estimate for services of $19,243.82 (a savings of approximately $9,000 from a previous stated price.) A motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve payment of $19,243.82 to come out of the District Attorney’s budget. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Magness and the motion passed. 12. Accept quote from Tyler Technologies for Report Management Software licenses for County Constables; $1,525.00 to be paid from Contingency – County Auditor: Ms. Whipple expounded on how this was a reporting system for the Constable vehicles. Approve policy to work with Precinct employees to

acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); - Commissioner Precinct 1: After a discussion regarding the need to fine tune the policy on this matter which included a suggestion by a citizen to implement a reimbursement plan paid out to an employee in lieu of the county paying up front, a motion was made to pass on this by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner McQueen and the motion passed. 16. Approve Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the Town of Ector for road work and have County Judge sign on behalf of the County – Commissioner Precinct 1: After some discussion with Judge Cunningham thanking Attorney Garner for his assistance, a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed. 17. Approve Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Leonard related to development and implementation of regulations in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: Fannin County Civil Attorney Andy Garner expounded on a revision needed on the agreement which Judge Cunningham advised the court entailed the removing of a section regarding a lake buffer zone from the agreement as no such zone currently exists. After some discussion a motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the agreement with the amendments described by Judge Cunningham. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Magness and the motion passed. OPEN DISCUSSION ITEMS: Open discussion items will be passed on unless discussion requested by a member of the Court or a Citizen. 18. Subdivision Committee and Subdivision Policy – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted several requests coming into the county from individuals and developers for waivers/special exceptions and discussed how quality development for the county is the reason rules are in place. 19. Courthouse repairs and litigation - County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on how a “202 Petition” has been filed in the ongoing pursuit of holding parties responsible for defective work done with the Courthouse renovation project and gave an example of a board recently falling off the wall. 20. Justice Center - County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted his satisfaction with the current work being done at the site and reiterated how the county needs a utilitarian Justice Center and not a work of art that would send the county into further unwanted debt. 21. County budget and

revenue sources – County Judge: No significant updates. 22. Water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: A citizen of Bonham spoke to thank the court for the way they are handling issues in the county. 23. Fannin County road issues - County Judge: A resident of CR 4720 spoke to voice complaints about the condition of the road leading to his home as well as other county roads and how he believes that taxes are paid to address road conditions in the county. A discussion ensued with Judge Cunningham calling to attention the other services taxes pay for (ambulance, law enforcement, schools, etc.) and the need for the county to prioritize where tax dollars go. He cited an example of a county road receiving heavy traffic due to thirty families residing on it as opposed to a county road that has only one residence on it. He empathized with the citizen noting there is no question that “we need good roads”, but noted the funds that are available dictate what work can be done and concluded his statement by thanking the speaker and assuring him efforts to obtain additional funding for the roads are being looked at. Last to speak was a resident of PR 451 who inquired into work needing done on CR 4515. EXECUTIVE SESSION(S) IF NEEDED: 24. Pursuant to Texas Government Code, Section 551.071, Commissioners Court reserves the right to meet in Executive Session to consult with their attorney – County Judge: This was passed on. 25. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner McQueen stated the roads are being worked on to the best of the county’s ability and noted the role weather has in their condition. Commissioner Self also commented on the roads and the money needed to increase the level of work being done on them (noting the county avoids the raising of taxes but how that might be needed.) He concluded by noting that

he will be working on getting bids for rock needed to correct issues and will ask it to be put on next week’s agenda before wishing all a good week. Commissioner Magness also commented on tax money that goes to road and bridge work and how it is just not enough. He concluded by noting he continually looks at every road that needs work and which ones need it worse. He voiced his appreciation for everyone’s attendance & their input before wishing them all a good week. Commissioner Kopf agreed with the previous statements and commented on the effect a recent freeze and rains had on

Letter to the Editor

A Vote for the Establishment is a Vote Against Our Children’s Future It has been very interesting to learn who the establishment is in Fannin County. As a wise non-incumbent running for office said recently, “Follow the money.” It has been interesting to watch how there have noto-very-little open platforms for those running against the incumbents to speak on (unless they themselves provided that opportunity), until a local Christian group started the ball rolling to give everyone a fair chance to be heard last month. It is evident we need a change in our county. For example, a petition was recently circulated for our Commissioners Court to not allow sexually oriented businesses into our county. Instead of doing what the people requested, each leader in attendance voted to “regulate” the s.o.b.'s into our county, which means that once these businesses jump through a few hoops, they are rooted here by permission of our county leaders. Additionally, many of us heard that windmill turbines won’t be established here; but just watch, as there is already talk among our established leaders, and at least one candidate for Precinct 3 Commissioner, that windmills will merely be "regulated.” Which again means they will be allowed into our county by jumping through legal hoops by permission of those elected to represent the people. A final example is the 121 Project. Many residents asked questions when presented re-

If you are thinking positive during negative times, you’ve already won!

cently with how our leaders plan to get the $1.5 million to pay for this project, as well as how the residents who are forced to eminent domain will be assured they get a fair dollar for their land. Instead of answering these reasonable concerns, our leaders who were in attendance that day in Commissioners Court voted unanimously that the 121 Proj-

ect is coming through Fannin County. For a change from politics as usual to courage and principle, I implore you to know who the incumbents are before you vote for them, as it will have huge effects on our children and for us all in the days to come. Molly Goodson
