[The 2nd in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham]

After the Civil War a number of corporations began the process of establishing railroads in Texas.

A line was proposed that would begin at Marshall to Texarkana, and then from Texarkana to the west and from Sherman to the east.

On December 7, 1872 a mass meeting of the citizens of Bonham was held at the courthouse to settle a dispute over location of the proposed depot to be constructed when the line arrived in the city. Two sites were offered with strong proponents for both. One site was east of town in the Bois d’Arc bottom. The other was 250 yards south of the courthouse square.

The later site was referred to as “being free from frogs, turtles, water moccasins, mosquitos, and mud.” After a three hour debate a petition was drawn up requesting

city fathers to order an election on the subsidy question and to locate the depot at the site south of the square. The subsidy question involved a demand by the railroad owners for a financial donation by the city to aid in construction of the line and the depot.

The election was scheduled for mid January with funds in the amount of $25,000 to be allocated to the subsidy. There was still much bitter feeling over the depot location and partly as a result the election failed 425 votes against and 229 voted for.

Fearing a loss of the railroad for the city, the officials took another course of action. Using several tracts of land owned by the city from the Inglish and Simpson donations, land along Powder Creek from city limits to city limits was donated in lieu of the subsidy.

The deed to the property specified that “Texas and Pacific Railway Company shall establish and maintain a passenger and freight depot upon the land herein conveyed.”

The Texas and Pacific Railway Company continued work on the

Transcontinental Line through the spring and summer of 1873 as the line was being built from Sherman eastward. In later spring

or early summer construction was begun on the depot between Main and Center Streets.

The only information about the building comes from a series of

Sanborn Insurance maps. The building was surrounded by an elevated dock. Adjoining on the east end and running to the end of the block was a wooden freight dock covered by a roof but with open sides. Across three lines of railroad tracks was a large cotton shipping platform where bales of cotton were stored awaiting transport.

Track laying reached Savoy by the middle of August. The Transcontinental track from Sherman to Bonham was completed and the first train arrived on October 12, 1873.

Newspaper editor Tom Burnett stated: “Many important changes have occurred in the city and its surroundings. New houses have sprung up everywhere and the town has put on railroad airs in profusion. The Transcontinental has been completed and trains come thundering along every few hours. Our merchants and business men have acquired an additional spring in the heel, and claw and hammer coats and four story tops of the latest distress parade the streets in droves. We hardly know the place and fear we shall have to fly around briskly (with

pencil behind ear) to keep up with the times and season.”

By November 1 the rails reached the county line beyond Honey Grove. The days of the stage coach were numbered with each mile of railroad construction. The 8.78 miles from Brookston to Paris was finished in 1875 and 90.44 miles from Paris to Texarkana were completed in 1876. The remainder of the Transcontinental line from Sherman to Fort Worth was not constructed until 1880, finally providing the linkup with the principal line of the Texas and Pacific Railway.

Ending An Extended Absence: Class 1A Savoy Lady Cardinals reach first hoops postseason since 2014

SAVOY -- Maddie Clark and Alyson Bogard have no memories of the last time Savoy reached the girls’ basketball postseason.

The Lady Cardinals’ last advance almost predates their days at Savoy ISD -- they were second graders there at the time.

That bi-district trip in 2014 concluded six-straight trips by the Lady Cardinals -- highlighted, midway through the streak, by consecutive advances to the regional semifinals.

Ending that absence -- a year shy of a decade -- evokes different reactions from the juniors -two of only seven total players on the team.

“It’s really nerve racking,” said Bogard. “We are trying to impress the whole community. We don’t want to disappoint.”

“I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Clark. “I’m excited for it.”

Savoy’s advance comes during the third-place Lady Cardinals’ first season under head coach Dustin Bates.

“The number one thing we’ve focused on is the culture of our program,” said Bates. “We want to be known as a program of character.

“We want to be good teammates first,” he said. “Be en-

couraging. Be dependable. Be trustworthy.

“After that, we want to be tough. And, we want to play together.”

The juniors noted multiple aspects of their first season with Bates at the helm.

“He has a lot of good strategies,” said Bogard, “and he pushes us to do our best.”

“He always pushes us to do better,” agreed Clark, also noting Bates’ plays and ideas. “We are a lot more disciplined.”

“We are definitely a lot more disciplined than before,” agreed Bogard.

Having secured a postseason spot last month, Savoy got a confidence boost, heading into the

playoffs, even in a loss on Feb. 6. The Lady Cardinals narrowly lost, 4236, at district runner-up -- and postseason-regular -- Campbell -- after having 10 days between 23-1A games due to icy conditions Jan. 30-Feb. 2 and the annual Beta competition the following two days.

“We executed better and had more energy,” said Clark. “We just did better and shots were falling.”

“I feel more confident. The first time, we lost by 20 [to Campbell],” said Bogard. “I feel good knowing we can do it.”

Note: Presley Walker also plays for the 2023 Savoy Lady Cardinals basketball team.

DC, HG, SR girls also extend hoops seasons

Three other Fannin County girls’ basketball teams continued their campaigns beyond the regular season.

Dodd City repeated as the 23-1A champion -- its 11th-straight undefeated district title. Meanwhile, in 14-2A, Honey Grove secured the third-place berth, returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

Sam Rayburn and Whitewright tied for the 14-2A fourth-place berth, necessitating a play-in Friday, Feb. 10. -- Rich Hilliard

Dodd City garnered the No. 3 ranking in the Texas Girls Coaches Association pre-season state softball poll, released on Jan. 30.

The Lady Hornets attained the spot, after being edged last spring by eventual-champion D’Hanis, 2-0, in a Class 1A

It represented Dodd City’s fourth appearance in the 1A State tournament in the last five completed softball seasons -- the Lady Hornets, in 2021, won their first title in the sport.

D’Hanis will start the season atop the 1A poll, which also included: No. 2 Hermleigh, No. 4 Blum, No. 5 North Zulch,

No. 6 Aspermont, No. 7 Chireno, No. 8 Chester, No. 9 Northside, No. 10 Eula.

The 2A pre-season poll included: No. 1 Crawford (defending champion), No. 2 Weimar, No. 3 Ganado, No. 4 Thorndale, No. 5 Stamford, No. 6 Lovelady, No. 7 Archer City, No. 8 Groveton, No. 9 Como-Pickton, No.10 Bre-

Honey Grove’s Levi Beavers has been named at linebacker to the Texas Sports Writers Association all-state third team for the 2022 football season.

The 5-10, 205 sophomore made more than 170 tackles this season for the War-

riors (9-3, 5-1), who with an area-round trip made their first postseason advance since 2019’s same-round advance. Beavers earlier shared the defensive player of the year superlative in 9-2A-I, as the Warriors advanced to the postseason as the district runner-up.

The railroad changed everything for Bonham and Fannin County. Note below the cotton compress and the cotton platform in the 1892 Sanborn map below.

Before the railroad cotton was shipped on wagons.

The Fannin County Museum of History is located in the Texas & Pacific Depot which was built in 1918 and replaced an earlier depot that had burned.

The Museum has many items relating to the railroad in Bonham. Stop by to see the Depot, the restored caboose and the many items in the Railroad Room.

AVOCADO SHRIMP TOSTADA

1½ lbs. medium size Texas wild caught shrimp, peeled and deveined

3 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and minced

2 Tbsp olive oil

Fannin County Commissioners Contact Information

Edwina Lane

1 tsp. ground cumin

½ tsp. crushed red pepper

2 tsp. kosher salt

½ tsp. black pepper

3 small avocados

1 Tbsp. olive oil

2 tsp. lime juice

1 tsp. kosher salt

8 crispy 6” round tostadas

Garnishes: sliced jalapenos, sliced radishes, roasted corn kernels, shredded red cabbage, pico de gallo, crumbled queso fresco and lime wedges

In a medium size bowl, toss the shrimp with the garlic, olive oil, cumin, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Allow the shrimp to sit for ten minutes for the flavors to develop. Heat a grill to medium high heat. Brush the grill with a little oil to keep the shrimp from sticking. Place the shrimp in a single layer on the grill and cook for three to four minutes on each side until the shrimp begin to curl and turn pink and the center of the shrimp is no longer translucent. Remove the shrimp from the grill and keep warm. Cut the avocados in half and then remove the pits and scoop the flesh from the skin, placing the avocado pulp in a small bowl. Using a fork, mash the avocado with one Tbsp. of olive oil, the lime juice and one tsp. salt. Continue to mash the avocado until fairly smooth. Divide the avocado pulp evenly between the eight tostada shells and spread across the surface of each tostada. Top each tostada with three or four shrimp each and then add a topping of the wide range of garnishes as desired. Serve immediately. ENJOY!!

Jesus Came to Town

In the nineteenth chapter of Luke, we see that Jesus came to Jericho. “His fame went throughout” and “great multitudes came together to hear” (Matthew 4:24; Luke 5:15). The Son of God came to town walking. He was seen as a man and “he humbled himself” (Philippians 2:8).

In Jericho, there lived a man named “Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich” (Luke 19:2).

Prayer for Fannin County

Paul warns, “They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare” (1 Timothy 6:9). The rich are not to be “highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17).

Zacchaeus “sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature” (Luke 19:3). Luke goes on to record that Zacchaeus “climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him(Jesus): for he was to pass that way” (Luke 19:4). Zacchaeus let go of his pride to do

what it took to see the Lord. Jesus invited himself to the house of Zacchaeus in verse 5. Jesus invites himself into the lives and homes of everyone. He does this by the preaching of the Gospel.

Zacchaeus received Jesus. He “received him joyfully” (Luke 19:6). When Zacchaeus received Jesus, he received Jesus’ name. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). When Zacchaeus received Jesus, he received Jesus’ words. Peter said to Jesus “thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). When Zacchaeus received Jesus, he received Jesus’ authority. Jesus said that “All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18). Jesus truly said of Zacchaeus that “this day is salvation come to this house” (Luke 19:9).

The Day I Died

By Wil Pounds Wil is a graduate of William Carey University, B. A.; New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Th. M.; and Azusa Pacific University, M. A. He has pastored in Panama, Ecuador and the U. S, and served for over 20 years as missionary in Ecuador and Honduras. He had a daily expository Bible teaching ministry head in over 100 countries from 1972-2005. He currently serves as a Baptist pastor and teaches seminary extension courses in Ecuador.

God takes sin seriously. Sin is a terrible thing in the Christian’s life. That is why God did not overlook sin, but dealt with it in one complete stroke of judgment by sending Christ to die for us on the cross.

Now that we have been saved by grace can we live any way we so please? Can we sin it up now that our fire insurance has been paid in full?

The apostle Paul responded to that arrogant attitude saying, “How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” (Romans 6:2).

We died to sin. “Died” is in aorist past tense, indicating a once for all death in a judicial sense. We legally died (vv. 2, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 18). It refers to a single action that has taken place and has been completed in the past.

The idea of our death to sin is basic in this great chapter, and is essential to the sanctification of all believers.

“We died to sin.” When did you die?

The apostle Paul does not say we are going to die to sin, or we are presently dying to sin. He does not say we are continually to die to sin. The apostle has in mind a completed past action.

We “have died” to sin is already true of us if we have entered into a vital union with Christ. Charles Hodge notes, “it refers to a specific act in our past history.”

The apostle Paul tells us there is a watershed, a before Christ and after he came into our lives.

Before Christ describes the old man, the old self, what I was like before my conversion. The after Christ came in describes the new man, the new self, what my life has been like after I was made a new creation in Christ. The before Christ ended with the judicial death of the old self. I was a sinner. I deserved to die. I did die. I received my righteousness in my Substitute with whom I have become one. It describes my resurrection. My old life is finished, and a new life to God has begun.

Our continuing in sin is unthinkable says Paul because God by His grace took us from the

position of being in Adam and transferred us into the kingdom of Christ. It is something God has already done. It is not something we do, or have done, but something God has done to us. We have been joined to Jesus Christ. The old life ended in that transaction, and a new life has begun at the same time.

In Romans

6:1-11 the apostle Paul compares our dying to sin to how Christ died to sin. Although He had never experienced personal sin, He died to sin by suffering its penalty on the cross.

“The wages of sin is death.” He died as our substitute. He was punished for our sin in our place once for all on the cross. Jesus died to sin once for all. His relationship to sin is finished forever.

By dying in our place on the cross He put an end to its claim upon us once for all. Jesus died. That will never happen again. It will never be repeated. It is a completed action in the past. Paul makes this emphatically clear in verses 9-10, “knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin, once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.”

Our life is divided into two parts at the point in which we believed on Christ and were born

Can you point to a time in your life and see the change before and after Christ separated by the new birth? When we put our faith in Christ as our Savior and were born again the old self died through union with Christ and was buried. The penalty of our sins was paid in full by Christ’s atoning death. At the same time the believer rose again from death, a new person, to live a new life in Christ. We were crucified with Christ and rose with Him to new life.

We died to the life of sin. God counts the utterly perfect righteousness of the risen Christ as ours. He sees us risen in Him. We live a new life in Christ. The old one died, and it was buried.

Does your life have a dividing line marked Christ?

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself:

• Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others?

• Is there something I wish I could live without?

• Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control?

• Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

abnormal. The FCARC does many events to test antennas, alternative power supplies, and other things that can affect communication under less than optimal conditions. This event let us find technical issues and fix them ‘in the field’ to make the event work.

Those tests also let us operate in the field for events, such as supporting the Autumn in Bonham Bike Rally. When weather conditions are such for storms or tornadoes, the FCARC is in contact with the National Weather Service,

updating them of the conditions on the ground in Fannin County and surrounding areas.

We also held the Second Chili Cookoff, with some excellent offerings. Chili from mild to spicy along with soups were tasted by the judges. The trophies went to Ruth Brown, in first place and Mark Hetherington for second. A lot of fun

for everyone and tasty food to enjoy. Many thanks to Bob and DeeDee Yakel, Jeff Jones, Regina and Dennis Troutz for judging the entries.

Danielle Lee Abbott and Wyatt Tenison Fannin of Savoy, Texas were united in marriage at 3 p.m. on January 2, 2023 at the historical Fannin County Courthouse. The newly appointed Judge Louise Goodwater was the officiant.

Danielle is the daughter of Steven Abbott, Jalah and husband Steve Robinson. Wyatt is the son of Dawn and husband Kelvin Clark and the late Bryan Fannin. Wyatt is a direct descendant of Colonel James

Fannin, the man for which our county is named.

Danielle is an elementary school teacher in Savoy and Wyatt is the owner of Good 2 Go Moving Co. The couple had a small family ceremony in the beautiful 2nd floor courtroom. The ceremony was the first wedding at the newly restored historic Fannin County Courthouse. Danielle and Wyatt chose to exchange their own vows, shared a perfect kiss and then they were sent on their way to happily ever after.

Mike and Trish Keck were the fabulous photographers for the event. They captured all the memories for the couple in such a beautiful way.

The newlyweds plan to raise their four boys on a farm in northern Fannin County in the near future.

Game Warden Field Notes

Where Everybody Knows Your Name After assisting with a manhunt, a Falls County Game Warden was returning home when another vehicle changed lanes abruptly, almost striking his patrol vehicle. The warden initiated his emergency lights for a traffic stop but it took almost

a mile for the driver to pull over to the shoulder. Upon contact, he noticed the driver was under the influence. During the standard field sobriety test, the driver asked several times if he could just be taken home or if someone could pick him up. The warden explained that the test revealed an absolute level of intoxication (three times the legal limit) and he was going to be arrested for driving while intoxicated. The driver became very emotional and sat down on the shoulder, refusing to be placed in the patrol vehicle. With the assistance of a deputy, the warden spoke with the driver for a few minutes and the driver finally agreed to get in the deputy’s patrol vehicle. Once at the jail, staff immediately recognized the driver. Just the week before, the driver had been arrested and released for another driving while intoxicated charge.

Caught on Camera

In September, a Tyler County game warden received information on individuals potentially participating in road hunting. The warden worked with a landowner setting up surveillance cameras in their field. Not long after he set up the monitoring system, he observed a slow-moving vehicle spotlighting and headed towards his location. The warden initiated a traffic stop, determining the subjects were hunting at night. Inside the vehicle, the warden located a loaded .22 long rifle. Additionally, the subject was a minor operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Charges are pending.
