Bonham City Council Meeting: Formally Accepts Mayor Roy Floyd’s Resignation, Revisits City Drainage System Issues and Spring Election Topics Visited
By Rose Schwartz
The Bonham City Council Meeting began with the Invocation being led by Henry Shelton of Trinity Baptist Church. Mayor Pro Tem H.L. Compton called the Regular Meeting of the Bonham City Council to order Monday, February 8, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. 1. Consider and take action to approve minutes of the January 11th regular meeting: Motion was made and passed to approve minutes. 2. Consider and take action to accept financial report for month ending January 31, 2021: Director of Finance Dave Struchtemeyer gave a summary of the report. Motion was made and passed to accept report.
3. Citizens Opportunity to Speak: The first citizen to speak, stated she was opposed to the proposed additional charge to the water bill of $2.33 that was voted on in the previous council meeting as well as previous raises to the water bill. She stated she was in favor of the drainage system but as a senior citizen on a fixed income, she wishes the City would find another way to fund the cost other than raising the water bill she and many like her; have a difficult time affording. Next to speak was another citizen concerned about the increasing charges added to the water bill. Specifically, the $4.00 charge added to the water bill to cover the costs of the poly cart used for garbage services. He

The last citizen to address the Council had similar concerns and voiced ideas she believed could alleviate the burden of additional charges to utility bills citizens are forced to carry. She also said she would like for there to be time for the Council to hear and take into consideration, the concerns brought up by citizens before voting on issues at the time citizen comments are made. 4. MLK Art and Essay Contest Winners 11/24/20
Press Release - The Our Community Matters Council (OCMC) is pleased to announce the winners of the First Annual OCMC Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Art Contest. Essay winners are Callie Wright (first place), Mackenzie Hayes (second place) and Izac Miller (third place). Art contest winners are Lilly Mitchell (first place), Cody Askins (second place) and Victoria Gomez (third place). “We would like to thank those educators and their students who participated in this contest,“ said Pastor Stuart P. Courtney, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church and leader of the OCMC. Organizers reported receiving 179 entries of art and 15 essay entries. Winners received gift cards donated by local supporters. “We are so grateful for the thoughtful and inspiring
entries from the youth who shared what they understand about the life and work of this legendary civil rights giant,” said Courtney. Our Community Matters Council was started in 2020 and exists to improve and inspire community involvement in matters related to injustice and racism with an overall goal of partnering with city leaders, law enforcement and citizens of the community for the greater good of our community. The OCMC vision is to promote positive and purposeful evolution that allows Fannin County to be a unified community, committed to equality and justice for all. Working unilaterally with citizens from all races and backgrounds to create a culture of respect and promote harmony, increase opportunities for educational, economic and health care improvements.
OCMC was started in Bonham as a follow up response to a peaceful march for racial equity. In June of 2020, on the parking lot of Bethlehem Baptist Church of Bonham, Texas the faith community and citizens of Fannin County gathered for a peaceful protest to stand against racial injustice, police brutality and to advocate unity in the community. Participants marched with members of local law enforcement and concluded the march across from Bonham Police Department. The gathering included speeches of unity from city leaders, a proclamation from the city of Bonham, and inspiring words from concerned citizens. Closing remarks included a commitment to follow up meetings which resulted in the formation of Our Community Matters Council. The OCMC was formed through applications submitted by citizens, and volunteers from various county and city organizations. There are four operating committees within the council including: Social Justice Advocacy, Unity in the Community, Health & Economics Empowerment and Education Equality & Enhancements. For more information about OCMC, follow their Facebook page “Our Community Matters Fannin County” or contact Pastor Courtney at (903) 583-8061.

This week’s recipe is one of the oldest I have in my personal recipe book. It’s hand written on paper that has now turned brown from age. I used to make this a lot in my younger days, and to be honest, I had forgotten about it. It’s simple, but really good.

Mix eggs and corn together. Melt butter in casserole dish, then pour butter in bowl with corn and eggs. Put back in casserole dish. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°.

“The Pen is mightier than the sword” took place when President Biden (in his pursuit to stop Global –warming) used his pen to sign Executive Orders to stop the Keystone Pipeline, fracking, and any planned pipelines. That put thousands out of work; not to mention businesses forced to suffer that supported them. We’re doomed to run out of oil that produces gasoline. Biden states he has that covered by making thousands of windmills to produce electricity that will charge batteries, and our vehicles will be powered by those batteries. Biden has put the ‘cart before the horse.’ Why didn’t he build the windmills etc. to see how vehicles run on batteries, THEN he could shut off the oil. Right now, there are many Americans that’d like to have MORE Globalwarming.

Grayson College Fills Need for Certified Nurse Aides in Texoma Denison, Texas - Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning is now an in-facility test center for the Nurse Aide Competency Exam administered by Prometric. In-facility test center approval from Prometric means that Grayson College’s Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) students can receive training and test for certification in the same location on Grayon’s main campus in Denison. “Grayson College has again met a need in service to its students and the Texoma community,” Workforce Solutions Executive Direc-
tor Janie Bates said. “When the administration of CNA certification exams changed to Prometric in September 2020, the number of testing centers fell dramatically,” Director of Continuing Education at Grayson College Kate Corder explained. “Students were successfully completing our training program and employers wanted to hire them, but there was very limited availability at testing centers to get our students certified. That’s when we decided to do something about it.” To meet the in-facility test

center requirements, Grayson College’s Maintenance Department installed a sink with hot and cold running water in a classroom. Additionally, Health Sciences Instructor Crystal Wilcoxen collected the required testing room equipment and supplies. The testing center requirements include a working hospital bed, call light, wheelchair, full-size mannequin and a lengthy list of other supplies. “Offering the Nurse Aide Competency Skills Exam in a place that’s familiar and known to students should reduce test anxiety and im-

prove test performance,” Wilcoxen said. “Students earn a higher wage if they’re certified so this designation not only saves students money in terms of travel costs; it also helps them earn more money.” According to data from Workforce Solutions Texoma, there are 482 annual openings for nursing assistants in the Texoma area. In 2020, 105 students enrolled in Grayson College’s Patient Care Technician and Certified Nurse Aide training programs making them eligible for certification as a Nurse Aide. These recent

Alzheimer’s Progression
Press Release - You may have spoken with someone living with Alzheimer’s disease today and not known it. That’s because there are three distinct stages of the disease. In the first, called early stage or mild Alzheimer’s disease, a person may function independently. He or she may still drive, work and be part of social activities. Despite this, the person may feel as if he or she is having memory lapses, such as forgetting familiar words or the location of everyday objects. Friends, family or others close to the individual begin to notice difficulties. During a detailed medical interview, doctors may be able to detect problems in memory or concentration. The second is called middle stage, or moderate Alzheimer’s disease; it’s typically the longest stage and can last for many years. As the disease progresses, the person with Alzheimer’s will require a greater level of care. During the moderate stage of Alzheimer’s, the dementia symp-
toms are more pronounced. A person may have greater difficulty performing tasks, such as paying bills, but they may still remember significant details about their life. You may notice the person with Alzheimer’s confusing words, getting frustrated or angry, or acting in unexpected ways, such as refusing to bathe. Damage to nerve cells in the brain can make it difficult to express thoughts and perform routine tasks. The third, or late stage is called severe Alzheimer’s disease. In the final stage of this disease, dementia symptoms are severe. Individuals lose the ability to respond to their environment, to carry on a conversation and, eventually, to control movement. They may still say words or phrases, but communicating pain becomes difficult. As memory and cognitive skills continue to worsen, significant personality changes may take place and individuals need extensive help with daily activities. So, the symptoms of Al-

zheimer’s disease worsen over time, although the rate at which the disease progresses varies. On average, a person with Alzheimer’s lives four to eight years after diagnosis, but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors. Changes in the brain related to Alzheimer’s begin years before any signs of the disease. This time period, which can last for years, is referred to as preclinical Alzheimer’s disease. Texas A&M study aims to reduce cattle reproduction failures, economic losses
Kay Ledbetter The next crop of calves is what keeps the cattle industry in business. Knowing this, a Texas A&M University study aims to reduce reproduction failure, which can cause a significant loss to the U.S. beef industry. Rebecca Poole, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research associate in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Animal Science, has received a twoyear grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Poole’s project, “Hormonal and Immunological Influences on the Uterine Microbiome in Cattle,” is aimed at developing a better understanding of the relationship between reproductive hormones and immune changes as well as the microbiome of the reproductive tract in beef cattle. “Like a fertility clinic for humans – it’s the same idea, just bringing it to the beef cattle world,” Poole said. “They have found there are a lot of relationships between the microbiome of the reproductive tract and fertility in women, and so the research has continued from there to establish the understanding of microbiomes in other species, like our livestock.” She said now that the technology is available to better understand the microbiome, it’s a great time to work in this area of research. Microbiome research in the past was dependent on being able to culture certain bacteria in a petri dish, but that was a limiting factor, because only about 1% of the bacteria can be cultured. “Now, using a sequencingtype approach, we are able to determine all the bacteria in a certain environment,” Poole said.
The reproductive microbiome Poole said the presence and activity of symbiotic bacteria in the reproductive tract and its effects on fertility is relatively unknown in cattle, and so that is where she will concentrate her research. She believes that variation in reproductive hormone secretion and/or immune function control the bacterial species diversity in the uterus, which subsequently affects pregnancy establishment and maintenance in beef cattle. “The producer doesn’t necessarily need to understand the different types of bacteria,” Poole said. “My research will take the concepts the producers understand along the lines of the estrous cycle, estrous synchronization protocols, and reproductive hormones; and I will see how those relate to the microbiome so that we can find ways to potentially manipulate it, from a hormonal standpoint, to create a healthy microbiome to establish a pregnancy.” She said she will be using standard estrous synch protocols that producers are used to, such as using GnRH or prostaglandin injections to create a high estrogen or high progesterone environment and seeing how that manipulates the bacterial species. “We have found differences between cattle that are essentially able to establish a pregnancy versus those that do not, differences in their uterine microbiome before breeding,” Poole said. “So really we are just trying to figure out if there are other mechanisms that are controlling that microbiome, like reproductive hormones, and also the immune system is another component that is most likely involved with changes in the microbiome.” Project goals, projections Poole’s project further contributes to the Department of Animal Science’s Areas of
Excellence – pregnancy and developmental programming, which emphasizes an increased understanding of animal reproduction at molecular, cellular and whole animal levels. The first objective of this project is to look at the relationship between differing levels of reproductive hormones and the reproductive microbiome prior to breeding. The second objective is to look at the relationship between the immune system and reproductive microbiome. Poole said she will be collecting samples over the next month and will artificially inseminate the cows and then begin looking at pregnancy results. She expects by the end of summer to have results that will help begin establishing the relationship between the reproductive hormones and the reproductive microbiome. “This will help us gain a better understanding of what is influencing the reproductive tract microbiome in cattle and help us focus on improving fertility in beef cattle through enhance management practices,” she said. “The ultimate goal is to increase the sustainability of the animal production industry.” Poole said in addition to this research, she is a part of another project looking at nutritional effects on the microbiome, and that should be available around the same time. “So, our suggestions to producers could be based on nutrition or it could be a hormonal thing, which means we suggest they take a blood sample at a certain point in time to see where a cow stands – is she a good contender for breeding based on her hormone concentrations?” she said. “It may mean, for example, suggesting the use of cattle heat detection patches, which is an indication of estrogen concentrations at breeding.”
Get cozy by the fire
Poole said knowing this information will allow producers to feel more comfortable at the time of breeding based on information of the cow’s reproductive hormones, which will indicate what its reproductive microbiome looks like. Not every producer will utilize this information – not those, for example, who just turn the bull out in the pasture and hope for the best, she said. This would be geared toward someone who has an extensive management program of some kind, utilizing estrous synchronization and artificial insemination. “Based on my results, I can provide suggestions for producers and say, ‘you need to take a blood sample at this time, and let’s look at her reproductive hormone concentrations or her immune cell levels and see if her uterine microbiome environment is acceptable for breeding,’” Poole said. “Again, it is like the human fertility clinic, and we can estimate likelihood of establishing a pregnancy.”

RIVERBY, TX – February 3, 2021: One of largest environmental efforts in the country has just rebirthed a Texas stream. This summer, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) orchestrated improvements to the Willow Branch Creek, which sits at the heart of 17,000 acres being restored as part of its Bois d’Arc Lake construction project. Bois d’Arc is the first major reservoir to be built in Texas in about 30 years. NTMWD and its contractor Resource Environmental Solution (RES) restored and

enhanced approximately 17 miles of the creek and tributaries by restoring them to their natural, meandering path. This concludes a key piece of the project’s massive environmental restoration, which includes planting over 5 million trees, restoring/enhancing over 8,500 acres of wetlands, enhancing/restoring 70 miles of existing streams and planting approximately 3,200 acres of native grasslands. Bois d’Arc Lake will provide an invaluable water source for millions of North Texans as well as recreational and environmental benefits (stimulating Fannin County’s economy by $166 million every year after its completion). The lake will also cover twentysix square miles of local natural habitat. To help offset, or mitigate, the loss of habitat, NTMWD purchased thousands of acres including the Riverby Ranch, an approximately 15,000-acre ranch located north of the new reservoir site. Willow Branch Creek travels through the ranch. RES, a national expert in environmental restoration, was hired to return these acres to a restored, natural pre-agricultural condition. None of this other restoration would be successful, though, without restoring Willow Branch Creek. The creek, which flows into the Red River, transports two-thirds of all water that falls within the ranch’s watershed. It is the heartbeat of the of the local ecosystem. “Everything comes back to water,” explains Project Manager Matt Stahman with RES. “All of the habitats we’re restoring—thousands of acres of grasslands, wetlands and woods—all of it is driven by water. If we can slow down the water across the landscape and let it soak into the ground, the better chance that the other habitats we restore [including trees and grasslands] will succeed. Previously, a lot of the streams had been straightened for drainage. One of the major things we do is restore these streams
to their natural wavy, winding configuration,” Stahman explained. Repairing a creek’s bends, however, requires a lot of careful planning. For Willow Branch, designers with Bois d’Arc Lake’s Program Manager Freese and Nichols and RES had to identify where the creek ran before it was channelized and decide how to block off or fill the old channel. They also had to identify how the river’s profile should look (the shape of it from the side)— “It’s not just a ‘u’ shape,” Stahman shared. Finally, they had to figure out how to stabilize its banks so the newly created bends won’t erode with heavy rain. Six months into design, actual reconstruction began upstream. At this point, the design team began to work collaboratively with construction crews to adjust designs based on what was or wasn’t working well onsite. “The size of the project allowed for this unique opportunity,” Stahman shared. “We could use the construction on one part to inform the design on others. The level of engineering that went into this blows my mind.” As they made its new bends, RES crews reworked up to 15 different layers of the creek’s soil. They cut native grass and formed it into square hay bales, placing the bales along with tree trunks and sometimes rock in strategic locations that would help the restored creek hold its shape. All the materials for this process came from onsite in a full recycling process. Meanwhile, other workers layered anti-erosion matting on the banks, sowed them with specifically-bred native grass seed and planted live stakes (local tree cuttings that will grow into full trees) 100 feet on either side of the stream. This work was aimed at helping vegetation grow back quickly along the new creek corridor to keep heavy rains from eroding soil into the stream. Two years after work began, about 90% of stream improvements are
complete, and work on the entire mitigation project is running nearly a year ahead of schedule. At the end of 2020, teams had restored approximately six miles of the main Willow Branch channel and 11 miles of Willow Branch Creek tributaries. The result of this massive effort? “According to everything we’ve seen so far, the results are very, very promising,” Stahman said. The new and improved Willow Branch Creek will enhance the quality water in the Red River—benefitting the entire watershed. It will also hold rain in the local water table longer to nourish the new wetlands, trees, bushes and grassland. These benefits should continue for the foreseeable future after the plants are established. In the meantime, RES will continue to monitor the site regularly. In addition to RES, a number of local residents have also been hired to work on the project and the team has worked closely with officials in Fannin County, the local jurisdiction. “We’ve really come to appreciate the people who live here and the people who lived here before,” Stahman said. “We’ve done our best to line up our project with the requests and interests of those in Fannin County.” Steve Long, NTMWD Project Manager for the Bois d’Arc Lake project certainly agrees, “NTMWD looks forward to seeing the fruit of our hard work and collaboration—as Bois d’Arc Lake and our restorations benefit North Texans for decades to come.” NTMWD expects to provide treated water from Bois d’Arc Lake in the Spring of 2022. Once construction work on the environmental mitigation is complete, RES will maintain, measure and monitor the results until it meets NTMWD’s permit requirements, which could take 15 years or longer. Game Warden Field Notes 2/16/21 Small World boat, attempting to locate the A Polk County game warden was contacted by a woman on social media asking if he had any meat to donate for her family of six. The warden donated deer meat and after getting to know the family, learned the dad was a disabled veteran and hadn’t been hunting in over 10 years since before the military. The warden then reached out to local landowners and got a hunt donated for him and one of his children at Rocky Creek Ranch. The veteran took his eldest daughter of 13 on her first hunt and during the hunt, the warden found out his kids were from the same town the warden grew up in. Small world, great memories. Giving Back Recently, Polk County game wardens reached out to local landowners to find ways to give back to their community through the outdoors. The decision was made to organize a disabled veteran and youth hunt. A drawing was held on social media to select qualifying participants for the hunt, which in turn created great support from local businesses and community members. A father (retired Navy veteran) and son (first time hunter) were selected to participate in the hunt. The father and son joined Game Wardens on the Simon Peter Bend Ranch for an amazing hunt. Both hunters and the landowner were thrilled about the experience, and now plan to keep in contact with one another. Moye’s Processing donated full processing of the meat, and McQuilkin Taxidermy donated a full shoulder mount of the deer. A big thank you to Scott and Toni Cochran-Hughes for the Texas hospitality and amazing meals, as well as fully supporting our nation’s heroes. Brotherly Love A Cass County game warden was contacted by a landowner about a man he caught on his game camera carrying two rifles. The warden recognized the person and contacted the suspect’s brothers to confirm the location of the suspect and to help set up an interview. Wardens interviewed the suspect, who admitted to hunting from the roadway and shooting a pig. The pig ran onto a hunting lease and the suspect admitted to searching for the pig on the lease with both guns. Charges Pending. Safe Harbor Cass County game wardens received a call from a couple of duck hunters who were unable to get back to land from the Sulphur River. Wardens responded with a flat bottom
hunters. Both hunters were located and transported to paramedics, who were waiting nearby. One hunter was hypothermic due to exposure to the cold water and the other was checked out and later released. Tractor Pull A Cherokee County game warden came upon a hunter on a tractor attempting to dump the carcass of a doe deer. The subject stated that he was not aware that doe days had closed on Nov. 29. Upon questioning, it was determined that the subject’s friend who was back at camp had also had some success that morning and had taken a buck. Upon arrival at the camp, the warden discovered an untagged buck that also failed to meet antler restrictions. Cases pending. Dove Tales A Real County game warden received a call from a group of people who were trying to fish on their own property. The caller stated while they were fishing, they were peppered by shot gun pellets and were seeing a lot of dove flying in the area. The warden arrived at the location and met a truck leaving the property, asking the driver if he had been hunting. The driver said he had been dove hunting and killed seven birds. The warden informed the hunter that dove season in the Central Zone ended on the 14th. The hunter was cited for Hunt Dove in Closed Season and his birds were seized and donated. Case pending. Ineligible A Webb County game warden and Duval County game warden completed an investigation on an individual who had entered a deer into the local Muy Grande Deer Contest. The individual who shot the deer was from out of state and did not possess a license. She then bought a license five hours later after entering the deer into the contest. The deer scored 172 5/8 Boone and Crockett Score. Cases and Civil restitution pending.

By Jennifer Dorsett Field Editor-Texas Agriculture Daily Since growing hemp was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill, many farmers have been eager to learn more about growing the crop. But finding reliable resources can be difficult. However, a hemp research and promotion board overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), commonly known as a commodity checkoff program, could pave the way for more grower, processor and consumer knowledge.
HIA recently conducted a month-long survey on industry attitudes toward a hemp checkoff program. Responses were overwhelmingly positive, with nearly eight out of every 10 farmers and processors supporting the development of a checkoff program for research, promotion and consumer education. More than 60 percent of those surveyed said they support being assessed to fund the program. “This is exciting news for our industry and exciting that there is such wide consensus in our

industry to support such a program,” Patrick Atagi, board chairman of the NIHC, said. “We believe that a checkoff program will help hemp not only develop markets for hemp products but also fund much needed research and educate consumers on the usefulness and versatility of hemp.” Over 80 percent of respondents said they strongly agreed or agreed on the need for additional research in seed development, agronomics, fiber, grain and CBD and/ or oil processing. “It’s clear from the survey response that there is a broad level of excitement around the

idea of a national hemp checkoff program and significant interest in the potential return the hemp industry could see from an effective research and marketing program under USDA,” HIA President Rick Trojan said. “We in the industry recognize the incredible potential of this agricultural commodity, and there was a strong consensus around the importance of educating the market about the value of hemp across the supply chain for food/grain, fiber and cannabinoids.” USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) currently oversees 21 checkoff programs. The funding for such programs is industry specific, usually through deductions from sales by producers, marketers and importers. The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture appoints board members to each research and promotion board. Those boards direct and carry out programs and day-today board management responsibilities. AMS oversees the boards through ensuring fiscal responsibility, program efficiency and fair treatment of participating stakeholders. NIHC and HIA are now forming a task force comprised of members from across the industrial hemp sector to determine how a hemp checkoff would be structured and operate. Those observations will go toward the development of a checkoff program proposal to USDA that will include an industry analysis, program justification, objectives and the impact on small businesses. “It’s encouraging to see the positive feedback this dialogue with the industry has generated so far, and we look forward to continuing to partner with the NIHC and other forward-looking allies to explore the tremendous opportunity a national checkoff represents for hemp,” Trojan said. To view more survey results, visit NIHC’s website.

EVELYN JUNE PHILLIPS GIBSON
Bonham, Texas -- Today we celebrate the life of Evelyn June Phillips Gibson who went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2021. June was born on May 12, 1936 to Lily Pearl Whisenhunt Phillips and George C. Phillips of Telephone, Texas. June had four older siblings that have all preceded her in death: Brother George Alvin Phillips, and sisters Alice Eyvonne Hackler, Lily Pearl (Kewpie) Smith, and Lynn Barrow Barker. June would talk about her early childhood education and how her daddy would go over the numbers with her when she was a young
arrangements are under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Alisha was born on December 11, 1987 in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of David Dale Messer and Melissa Jane Randolph Messer. She enjoyed listening to music and cherished her furbaby. Alisha loved everyone, especially her family. She will be greatly missed. Alisha is survived by her mother, Melissa Messer and husband Patrick Michel of Bonham, Texas; father, David Messer and wife Maxine of Greenville, Texas; sister, Crystal Johnson and husband Quincy of Waxahachie, Texas; brothers, David W. Messer of Waxahachie, Texas, Joshua Messer of Dallas, Texas, and Matthew Messer and wife Amelia Valles Rodriguez of Duncanville,

girl. She went to school in High Prairie and then later Bonham High School. After graduating at the very young age of sixteen, she went off to the big city of Dallas, Texas. Her older sister, Eyvonne, would guide her in her adventure away from the Telephone metroplex. While in Dallas, June went to a business school to further her secretarial skills. We won’t go into all the successful ventures as a secretary, but many said there was no better secretary than June. Somewhere along the way, at First Baptist Church in Dallas, she met and was kidnapped for life by Art. There may be two or three different stories as to how that came about, suffice it to say June’s story was the correct one. After Art’s return from Air Force duty in Keflavik, Iceland, they married on February 22, 1958. They moved to Miami, Florida where oldest son Greg was born. Then when Art was transferred to Elemendorf AFB in Anchorage,
Alaska, she was able to follow soon after. Daughter Tammy was born there in Alaska. A few years later, June and Art started a new life in Houston, Texas, where son Brad was born (and claims squatters rights for the state of Texas.) June is survived by her husband of 63 years this month, Arthur Louis Gibson, and her three children Gregory Louis Gibson, Tamara Dee Gibson, and Arthur Bradley Gibson. She has four grandchildren, Tyler Gibson, Shannon Stroud, Hunter Gibson, and Sean McDonough. June also leaves a number of nieces and nephews that loved her like a mother, especially these last years after they lost their own. She had some dear friends and neighbors who loved her and will miss her as well. June was a generous soul loved by all who knew her. Graveside services are set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Forest Grove Cemetery in Telephone, Texas.

JORETTA “JODY” LOCKABY
Joretta “Jody” Lockaby, born June 17, 1942, went to sleep with the angels on February 3 after falling ill in November. Jody loved good music and adored Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley. She went many times from honky tonks to concert halls to see them live. Jody loved to travel the world between the covers of a good book, to sew, cook, work in the yard, and could bring a flute to life. There just wasn’t much she couldn’t do if she decided to do it. Jody enjoyed storytelling and a good joke or two. She was just plain silly for Boston Terriers. One thing is for certain, you could never win an argument, and she didn’t suffer fools well, but she was a lot of fun. Jody worked for Cole Title for over 25 years and could recite land records from memory back to sovereignty which represented much of the history of Fannin County and stories long since forgotten. She also assisted Sanderson Surveyors. She was a graduate of Denison High School and attended Grayson County Junior College. Jody was among the first to see a need for a safe place for women facing sexual assault and domestic violence to find safety and support for themselves and their children. She was instrumental in creating what is now known as the Fannin County
Family Crisis Center. Jody lived life her own way, in her own lane, with more courage and heart than many will ever know. More than anything, Jody loved her family and caring for them. She is survived by her daughters, Jo Anna Stenzel of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada and Jennifer Cooper of Bonham, stepdaughters Kim Lockaby Corzine, Sherry Lockaby Edwards, and Terry Lockaby Lawson of Bonham, granddaughter Ashley Martin and son Wyatt of Bonham, stepgranddaughter Chelsea Stenzel Tedrick and children Mateo and Addy of Nampa, Idaho, sister Charlotte Watson of Mt. Kisco, New York, and brother Charles “Buddy” Watson of Colorado. Jody is predeceased by son James “Jim” Thrasher, mother Bennie Watson Huddleston, great aunt Ruby Richardson, and grandmother and matriarch of the family Beulah G. Johnson. Memories of Jody’s wit and wisdom, smile, laughter, twinkling eyes, and buttermilk pie will live on. There is no planned memorial service at this time. Contributions in her memory may be directed to the Fannin County Family Crisis Center, Gober Cemetery Foundation, or Willow Wild Cemetery Foundation. The family would like to acknowledge that many have suffered a significant loss over this last year. May we all find comfort in the end of suffering and find joy through an unbreakable bond of love with those who’ve gone Home.

She is preceded in death by her husband Tom, parents and children, Tommy, and Betty. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of CooperSorrells Funeral Home of Bonham. A private family service will be held at the Rosehill Cemetery in Bells, TX at a later date. To convey condolences or sign an online registry please visit www.coopersorrells.com “God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed her loving eyes and whispered, “Peace Be Thine”. Her days of toil, her hours of pain, her frightful nights are past. Her ever patient, worn out frame has found sweet rest at last.”
PSALMS 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Hailing Hayley: Bonhi’s McBroom nets college attention, inks with Oklahoma Wesleyan soccer

The 2021 Bonham senior also garnered the attention of someone at the next level of her sport. “I got an e-mail from (Oklahoma Wesleyan) assistant Taylor Gross inviting me to tour the campus and practice with the team,” said McBroom. “The head coach (Ivan Ristic) then talked to us about offers.” On Feb. 5, McBroom signed in the Bonham High School auxiliary gymnasium to
play college soccer at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla., with family, coaches, teammates, friends and other well-wishers on hand. “I’ve been thinking about this since middle school,” said McBroom. “I’m really happy I got this opportunity. “It’s a small campus,” she said. “It feels like you are at a bigger Bonham.” McBroom’s signing -- the first during Gamboa’s time

Top-ranked Class 1A Dodd City equates one of only two Fannin County teams to qualify for the girls basketball playoffs. The Lady Hornets reached Feb. 9 at 26-0 overall -- an undefeated district champion for the ninth-consecutive season and set for an 11th-straight postseason. “My thoughts are confident, but we can’t be on a high going into the postseason; we have to stay medium/normal,” said senior point guard Dani Bac-
cus, a Hardin-Simmons signee. “We have to go into every game [and] play our very best and nothing less.” Via the district championship, Dodd City again received a bidistrict bye and will begin its postseason Feb. 15 or 16 in the area round of the Region III-1A playoffs. Sam Rayburn qualified for the Region II-2A playoffs as the 14-2A third-place qualifier. It equated the third-consecutive postseason advance for the Lady Rebels. day, Feb. 11, at Celina High School in a Region II-2A girls bi-district basketball postseason game. The winner will play either the 16-2A champion McLeod or 15-2A fourth-place qualifier Quinlan Boles on Feb. 15 or 16 in the area round. Meanwhile, also in 14-2A, Honey Grove fell just short of an 18th-consecutive postseason trip. Wolfe City edged the Lady Warriors, 54-50, in overtime on Feb. 8 in a play-in for the fourth and final district playoffs berth.
