BEDCO Board Meeting – Revitalizing and Marketing Bonham
Story and photos
by Rose Schwartz
Monday, February 20, 2023, President of BEDCO’s Board of Directors, Alan McDonald first led attendees in an Invocation before calling to order at 5:30 p.m. the Regular Meeting of the Bonham Economic Development Corporation Board. Quorum was established with all members present except for Board Member Wayne Moore. President McDonald then noted that before continuing with the agenda items, he wanted to start by recognizing a grant award for the Fannin County Family Crisis Center in the amount of $6,000. The representative receiving the grant check for the center spoke on the improvements made to the building (F.W. Woolworth Sign and the new black awning) and then spoke how the center helps victims of crime and struggling families by either helping them outright or referring them to the resources that can help them before thanking
BEDCO for the grant.
2. Consideration and possible action to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on January 16th, 2023: A motion was made by Vice President of the Board, Kelly Royse to approve the minutes with Board Member Glen Taylor seconding the motion which passed unanimously.
3. Consideration and possible action acknowledging the monthly financial reports for January 2023: City of Bonham’s Finance Supervisor Michelle Burnett gave a report
of January’s fiscal 2023 year to date total being 9.5% favorable to the same time frame from the previous fiscal year. She noted it equates to $54,640.00 more in sales tax revenue with the same time frame from the past fiscal year. After some discussion among the board members, a motion was made by Board Member Allen Sanderson to accept the report with Board Member Ernie Quintana seconding the motion which passed unanimously.
4. Citizens Opportunity to Speak: [ The Board of Directors of the Bonham Economic
Development Corporation invites persons with comments or observation to briefly address the Board for the limited purpose of determining whether the matter should be referred to staff for study and response and/or be placed on a future meeting agenda. Local practice limits comments to three (3) minutes or less. State law prohibits the Board of Directors from considering deliberations on any item not listed on
the posted Board of Directors Agenda.]: A citizen of Boyd Loop in Bonham spoke to call attention to the lights around the square, specifically those on the Northwest corner of Hwy 56 and Center St; having a “leaning” appearance.
5. Executive Director’s Report a. Marketing report: BEDCO’s Executive Director Gayle Cooper, called the Boards attention to the large informa-
tive sign that will be displayed at three different trade shows in the coming months. She noted how it depicts the lake, the multi-generational population of Bonham and the reference to the Texoma Partnership (Sherman, Denison, Gainesville and Bonham.) She also noted a Bonham map that will be made available to interested parties at the tradeshows that will have marketing information on the backside as well as describing an ad that will be appearing in the digital magazine, Expansion Solution. She further mentioned a video that will be filmed on March 23rd, the 617-acre housing development that is moving ahead and a marketing giveaway that is a credit card sized magnifying glass.

b. Downtown report: Ms. Cooper noted that H H Architects are working on the first big potential map of downtown and commented on the creation of a Downtown Committee that will possibly be chaired by Allen Sanderson in order to work on the plan to form a TIRZ (Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone.) A discussion ensued regarding H H Architects and P3Works and the work being
done in the goal of revitalizing the downtown area.
6. Consideration and possible action regarding Budget Amendment. The increased costs for the lift station have necessitated an additional $150,000 for the wastewater line item. Consultant costs will be higher due to contracts for Downtown Planning and the TIRZ consultants. I believe we should add $40,000 to this line item creating a total amendment of $190,000: After President McDonald explained the reason for this, a discussion ensued where

7. Adjourn to Executive Session per 551.087 economic development negotiations and 551.074 for personnel discussion: A motion to enter into Executive Session was made, seconded and passed at 5:50 p.m. A motion was later made, seconded
8. Return to regular session; consideration and possible action resulting from Executive Session: V.P. Kelly Royse made a twopart motion that: a) BEDCO consider a $50,000 grant for a new business coming into Bonham and a $100,000 loan at an interest rate of 5.35% (terms to be determined by the Executive Director.) Board Member Glen Taylor seconded the motion which passed unanimously.

Protecting Your Home, Family and Community
By John E. Hunt, Sr. Deputy Constable PCT 3, Fannin County
Burglary today is a multimillion dollar business that can happen anywhere at any time. Since I previously worked for the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Fannin County DA’s Office I have a good understanding of how many times this happens in Fannin County. A significant number of burglaries are connected to the drug cases we saw at the Fannin County District Attorney’s Office. Criminals have to steal to support their drug habit, stolen property recovered in drug cases often comes from burglaries and that becomes a never ending cycle. Fannin County is a rural county with a lot of homes out in the county as well as in our cities. Those homes are targets of opportunity for burglary because of the number of citizens that work, which leaves no one at home to protect their property. One the best aids from the law enforcement standpoint is having cameras inside as well as outside. A camera is going to capture pictures of people, what’s being carried out of the house, vehicles, hopefully with tag numbers and times of the burglary.
Cameras are not very expensive comparatively speaking as to what you might lose; however you have to be careful where you place them for best results and to preclude the thief from stealing them also. Think about where you want to place the cameras to cover the most likely areas of entry and exits. Make sure they are well hidden but not blocked.
Security alarms are also great but only if they are turned on and they need to be tested periodically with the company you hire to run them to insure that they work properly. Police departments and sheriff’s offices will work with you to insure they work. A loud siren or klaxon horn on the exterior is also good, alerting neighbors that something is happening when that alarm goes off.
Crime prevention, whether
in a rural area or in the city, depends on neighbors watching out for neighbors. If you see someone that doesn’t fit in your neighborhood, alert your neighbors and law enforcement. The suspicious person you report today may have your house targeted for next week. Along with this kind of crime prevention in the rural areas is the dumping of trash on our rural, back county roads. Not only is it not keeping Texas and our county clean but it also cost a lot of money for your local Commissioner to have to clean it up. If you see someone dumping, attempt to get a tag number and a description of the vehicle and report it. DO NOT BE A VICTIUM OF CRIME; PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMMUNITY!

medium heat and melt the butter. Add the flour and stir to make a roux. Stir continuously for 5 minutes, or until the roux turns a copper color. Do not let the roux burn. Add the onion, peppers, celery and garlic. Stir and cook for 5 minutes to soften. Stir in the Cajun seasonings, cayenne, salt and pepper to taste, and stock or broth and tomatoes. Also, put your bay leaf in the pot and reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes to let the flavors develop, stirring
occasionally. Add the crawfish tails and warm them through. Remove from heat and stir in the parsley. Serve over white rice and garnish with extra parsley and spicy chili flakes. Don’t forget the hot sauce!

Do All Dogs Go To Heaven? A Tribute To Bella
the center of our emotion and dogs react to our emotional responses. That response is how we display our love and affection or our disdain for scattering trash all through the house or having an “accident” on our carpet.
Bell would respond to scolding through the dropping of her head and eyes, almost looking away from you while cutting her eyes to shaking that little stub of a tail 90 miles an hour if you loved or bragged on her.

Assembly of God
By Tim Meek fcltimmeek@gmail.com
That burning question has been asked in my family since I can remember, do all dogs go to heaven?. The short answer is, biblically, no. We will get back to that question in a moment.
This is really about saying goodbye to our dog Bella. She was a Weimaraner, kind of like a silver colored Lab with the intelligence and compassion of a kind, old grandmother. Bell was part of our family for about 9 years and recently she became very sick. The very kind folks at the Gray Veterinary Services in Trenton helped us to make the right decisions and eventually agreed it was best to put Bell to sleep. That was a bad day.
I get very, very attached to dogs. They love back so unconditionally. Kind of like the way God looks at his children. Age, background, ethnicity, which side of the tracks you were raised, or live on, does not matter. God looks on the inside, the heart, not the outside, like most people do.
Dogs look at the heart also. Not like God does. but on our emotions. The heart after all, is
Our Bell could, sit, speak, shake hands, roll over, fetch a ball, open the storm door and let herself out of the house to do her business then reach up and let herself back in...a potty trained dog! And she could just plain love you, unconditionally.
She could also tear into the trash, grab anything off the kitchen cabinet and eat it, including a full loaf of bread. She could also, with the tenacity of a raccoon, reach into the cabinet, pull out a box of Pop Tarts, open the box with precision, pull out a packet of two, unwrap and eat them, leaving the wrapper laying perfectly in front of her chair. After we “Bell Proofed” the kitchen, things got better between us.
Now, back to that dogs go to heaven question.
I have been teaching young people for well over 25 years so I consider myself a blue collar bible scholar, just sheer repetition of studying God’s word for so many years makes it possible you might pick up on something. It has been a blessing to dig into the whole bible for so many years and I can tell you that dogs, per
God’s Standard Of Love
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Where Is My Time?
We find in the Bible, that God is the standard of Love. John records that “God is love” (1 John 4:8,16). God’s love is to be valued by it’s time, gift, and endurance.
Consider the length of time of God’s love. Jeremiah penned that “the LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3).
hunting/fishing sports social life sleep
In this we see God’s love. Paul stated that “in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7).
TV work
se, are not looked upon in a positive light in the bible. There is definitely no mention, anywhere, that I can find, of dogs going to heaven, or any animal crossing over to the pearly gates.
However, there are scriptures that tell us some things about Heaven...
1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
That scriptures means we cannot even perceive, or even begin to understand what God has in store for his children in Heaven.
So, at this point we make up our own minds, look into our hearts and ponder the great mysteries of God.
The bigger question is, are you ready? Have you put aside all the noise, blah, blah, blah distractions of this world we live in and looked into your own soul and your destiny? If you have not, you need to do it now.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
And yes, I miss Bella, such a sweet Dog...and yes, it may not be scriptural or common sense thinking but I want to believe in the rainbow bridge.
Based on my meager understanding of the Word, the scriptures do not say dogs go to heaven, the scriptures do not say they don’t. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: Ecclesiastes 3:1
Consider the gift of God’s love. One of the most familiar verses in the New Testament is found in the book of John, which states “for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The church at Rome was reminded “but God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). The church at
Note Paul’s letter the Ephesians, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:45). John informs us that we can be God’s children, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (1 John 3:1).
Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Consider God’s standard of love in our lives. Paul, by inspiration, wrote that “Love suffers long and is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4). John shows us how to mirror the love of God, “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (1 John 3:16).
Jude instructs us in the endurance of love, “Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for

Dodd City qualified on Feb. 21 to play in its ninth-consecutive girls’ basketball regional tournament.
The Lady Hornets earned a rematch in the Region III-1A semifinals with Huckabay on Friday, Feb. 24, at Mansfield High School. Huckabay won last year, 39-35, en route to the
State semifinals. A 43-37 defeat of Throckmorton on Feb. 21 in a Region III-1A quarterfinal at Azle High School secured the advance.
District 23-1A champion

In the bi-district round on Feb. 13, the Lady Hornets de-

STEVE STANDLEE
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023, in the Wise Funeral Home Chapel.
Father. Son. Brother. Handyman. Author. Manager. Mentor. Coworker. Storyteller. Trivia master. Joker. Smoker. Drinker, and so much more. But above all else, Steve Standlee was a lover. If you didn’t learn something from him then you weren’t listening. Behind every aphorism or analogy was the intent to help. Every joke or jab out of a deep well of love. Earth is a little colder, and a lot less funny without him, but he left behind a legacy that will live far beyond a lifetime. His impact was incalculable. I’ll end this like we ended all conversations, no matter what. I love you, man.
Those left to cherish his memory are children, Steven Standlee, Stephanie Standlee, Thomas Standlee; soul mate Anna Rutledge; and numerous extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by parents Bob and Nellie Standlee.

Sunday Morning Re-take “Stand Up For Jesus”
Hello everyone!
What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning!
As I’ve said before, we are living in very uncertain times in this day and age. I am reminded of the message that was given by Peter in 1 Peter 5:8-10.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”
There is no doubt that we will face opposition in our lives. We may face things in this life that we don’t know how to handle at first, but as the Lord told the apostles Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for thee, and My strength is made perfect in weakness.” If we bring our problems to Him,
He is ready, willing, and able to help us.
I had a different hymn in mind for this week, but as I was writing this, the Lord laid this one on my heart. This classic hymn was written by George Duffield in 1858.
“Stand up, stand up for Jesus ye soldiers of the cross; lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory his army he shall lead till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed.”
“Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; forth to the mighty conflict in this His glorious day. Ye that are men now serve him against unnumbered foes; let courage rise with danger and strength to strength oppose.”
If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Because Christ Lives

God supplies all of our spiritual needs through His infinite resources. The Holy Spirit indwells us with His power; therefore, as we walk in the Spirit, we shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. As we are occupied with Christ, we are kept from sin and thus “saved by His life” (Rom. 5:10).
“He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:25). This permanent priesthood of Jesus gives Him the capacity to carry His saving work to completion. He can see them through every trial and difficulty right to the end of the road “because He always lives to intercede for them.” In saying this, the author reverted again to a truth he had already enunciated (4:14-16) where he had invited the readers to avail themselves boldly of the mercy and grace accessible to them through Jesus’ priesthood. Therefore, the living Christ is in the presence of the Father interceding on our behalf and the Holy Spirit is in our hearts bringing us to repentance, confession of sin and reconciliation with God. We are saved by His resurrection life as we walk in the Spirit. He saves completely, forever, all who put their faith in Him. Because He is our High Priest forever, He can save forever. “Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us” (Rom. 8:34).
One day we will stand before God complete in Christ and forever saved from the presence of sin. We will be in God’s presence and will nev-
er again be tempted by sin. In the fullest possible sense we shall be “saved by His life” forever. God has taken us out of the category as “enemies of God” and has placed us in His family as sons and daughters. Because we are no longer enemies of God and are now members of His family, Paul reasons that He is certainly going to save us from the final outpouring of His wrath on the Day of Judgment. If He has saved us while we were enemies, He will certainly keep on saving us now that we are His children. Because we are now His friends God is not going to change His mind and cast us aside. He forever remains the same. Yes, there is a “wrath to come,” but no true believer will experience it (1 Thess. 1:9–10; 5:8–10). We rejoice in the “hope of glory of God” because our living Savior guarantees our glorification. There is much more in store for the believer. Moreover, the greatest demonstration of the power of God was displayed at the cross of Calvary when Satan and his hosts were defeated. In our blessed union with Christ, we stand with Him on the resurrection side of death. The work of Christ for us leads to His work in us to deliver us from the power of sin. We are in this sense saved by His resurrection life. We now live in union with the risen Redeemer who died for us and rose again. Life, peace and righteousness are ours in this new life in Christ. The very life which is in Christ in glory is also ours.
It is the living Christ, through His Spirit within us, who leads us, prompts our inner being, inspires us to holy purpose and molds our character to be conformed to His image. The more we make ourselves available to Him the deeper becomes our awareness of that intimate relationship with Him. The life we live, we live by faith in the risen Christ. Because He lives, we are eternally saved (Heb. 7:23–25).

Week of February 22, 2023
Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees. Few reports and anglers on the water. Fishing slow and fish are scattered. Fork FAIR. Water Stained; 56-59 degrees; 2.29 feet below pool. Fork is looking good for the spring. Bass are getting into the new shallow waters as it heats up to the 60 degrees. Chatterbaits and spinnerbaits on windy banks in 2-5 feet and the front edge of flooded weeds is working. Squarebills at picking up in the same areas. Texas rigs with June bug or red shad brush hogs good on wood in 5-7 feet of water or on docks with cover. Viper XP jigs in black and blue and blue midnight good on big wood near ditches and creeks in 5-8 feet of water. Bass early spawners are beginning to move to staging areas and a few may be on beds. Crawfish and bream patterns might draw a vicious strike, so make sure your equipment is up for the job. Crappie are moving to the mouths of coves towards their spring spawning areas but are still tight lipped. The water is still cold, but a few warm days will set it all off. Get ready!
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees; 0.41 feet below pool. Fishing patterns are holding steady. Blue catfish bite at the feeder creeks should be on fire at the mouths and sometimes up the creeks. Catfish are also in deep water 20-30 feet, and starting to see more schools of catfish at 15-20 feet on flats and slopes midday. Cut gizzard shad on Santee rigs will land a bite. White bass are about to start the annual spawn. This is a bank anglers dream when you find them. Look in the creeks at the north end of the lake. Bank fishing is the way to approach them while in the creeks using ultra light gear, four pound mono and small jigs. On the main lake slabs in white and chartreuse one ounce will put a few on the boat. Look for them near the dam and around main lake points 15-25 feet. Crappie are in deep water brush in 20-30 feet of water, or roaming in the deep water.
Ray Roberts FAIR. Water is clear; 54 degrees; 0.64 feet below pool. White bass are in 70 feet of water suspended 50 feet down. Deadsticking with small slabs with a fly above is the best approach. It just takes a few days of nice weather for the bite to improve. Few anglers on the water due to inclement weather. Report by Jim Walling, Ucatchem Guide Service.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees; 0.83 feet above pool. Hybrid stripers and white bass are slower right now. We are seeing some fish shallow on wind blown points and even some being caught below the spillway. Swimbaits and roadrunners are working best. Trophy catfish are fair right now. Lots of fresh water and the fish seem to be concentrated near the inlets of the fresh water coming into the lake. Gizzard Shad is working best right now. Eater sized catfish are still slow, but should pick up as the weather warms up. Crappie have been slow since the sudden rise in water. Largemouth bite is also slow.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 65 degrees; 0.90 feet below pool. Striped bass are good deadsticking in 50 feet of water. Some catches are shallow on swimbaits. Birds are working the first and last few hours of light. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass are fair on flukes deadsticking deep water in the river channels close to the bottom. Smoke shad and white ice on a two ounce jig head. Also catching fish on humps in 10-15 feet of water with swimbaits. Watch for gulls and diving loons. Catfish are slow on cut shad drifting the mouths of the rivers or flats in 10-15 feet of water. Crappie are moving towards the creeks in 10-12 feet of water.
AUSTIN – The annual white bass run is heating up and anglers across Texas are preparing for exciting days on the water. Each spring, white bass run upstream from reservoirs into rivers and creeks to spawn, creating prime fishing opportunities for new and seasoned anglers. White bass can be targeted from the bank, motorized boat or paddle craft in multiple publicly accessible locations throughout the state. White bass, also known as sand bass, are a popular freshwater species preferred by Texas anglers both for sport fishing and for the dinner table. While most riverside property is privately owned, public access to high-quality white bass runs can be found at many Texas State Parks, Texas Paddling Trails, leased River Access and Conservation Area (RACA) sites and highway and bridge crossings. Due to the dry summer, some rivers and reservoirs in Texas are currently experiencing low water levels and low flows which could impact the timing of the white bass run. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) recommends that anglers check the water levels and river flows before heading to their favorite location.
Here are a few locations to get started:
Colorado River: Above Lake Buchanan, bank anglers can fish for white bass without a fishing license at Colorado Bend State Park. The park offers a boat ramp and bank access.
San Gabriel River: Upstream of Granger Lake, anglers can find white bass fishing at a public access point called Dickerson’s Bottom, aka “The Steps,” in the Granger Wildlife Management Area. This location can be found threequarters of a mile east of SH 95 on County Road 347 in Williamson County.
Neches River: Above Lake Palestine, anglers can find public access at Chandler River Park. This RACA site offers nearly 6,000 feet of river frontage for bank fishing and includes a boat ramp and kayak launch.
Llano River: Access to the river is provided through the Kingsland Slab RV Camp with 750 feet of river frontage along the Llano River. This River Access and Conservation Area (RACA) site offers free public fishing access and is located at 7300 River Oaks Dr. in Kingsland.
Sabine River: Above Toledo Bend Reservoir in Panola County, anglers can find public access for white bass fishing at the Grand Bluff Boat Ramp, which offers 275 feet of river frontage and a single trailer boat ramp. This RACA site offers free public access to the Black Shoals fishing hole located about 3 miles upstream.
Frio River: Above Choke Canyon Reservoir, public access points for white bass fishing can be found at county road and highway crossings, including the Highway 99 bridge crossing and boat ramp in McMullen County.

Any or all of the above-described lands may be exchanged. If the values are unequal, either party may equalize the values by making a cash payment, not to exceed 25 percent of the value of the lands transferred out of Federal ownership. The non-Federal lands proposed for acquisition by the Forest Service may include wetlands and floodplains along the creek segments. The Federal lands proposed for conveyance by the Forest Service may include wetlands and floodplains along the creek segments.
In addition, the exchange is expected to meet Forest-wide standards and guidelines, and the Management Area direction as described in the Land and Resource Management Plan. However, there may be a need for project-specific Forest Plan Amendment in regard to standards for Forest Plan Management Area (MA) 8d – Natural Heritage Areas. The conveyance of Federal Tract C-61, 13.4 acres, is within MA 8d and would not meet Forest Plan standard MA-8d-52 which states “Retain all lands as public lands”. The 2012 Planning Rule (36 CFR 219) requires notice of which substantive requirements of sections 219.8 through 219.11 are likely to be related to the amendment. Suspension of Forest Plan standard MA8d-52, through an amendment, is likely related to the consideration of § CFR 219.9(a)(2) Diversity of plant and animal communities.
The scoping comment period for this project is being combined with the 45-day notification and comment period requirement for proposed land exchanges. The public is invited to submit any comments or concerns about the exchange proposal, including advising the Forest Service of any liens, encumbrances, or other claims relating to the lands being considered for exchange, as well as any comments on the proposed project-specific Forest Plan Amendment.
Comments received, including names and addresses of those who commented, will be considered part of the public record for this proposed action and will be available for public inspection. Comments submitted anonymously will be accepted and considered; however, anonymous comments will not provide the agency with the ability to provide the respondent with subsequent environmental documents.
This project is expected to be documented in an environmental assessment and decision notice; and will be subject to objection (see 36 CFR 220.7).
Comments must be submitted in writing to the District Ranger, Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands, 1400 US Highway 81/287, Decatur, TX 76234, within 45 days after the initial date of publication of this notice. Comments may also be submitted electronically via the online comment form at: https://cara.fs2c.usda.gov/Public//CommentInput?Project=63528

“I was praying for help!”
By Rex Ray
Many years ago, my twin brother, Hez and his wife were driving in the mountains of Colorado, when they saw a dust cloud in the distance. They knew something had driven off the road.
Several cars had stopped by the time they got there. Hez started down and met two men and a 15-year-old boy coming up.
One of the men said “The car is on fire and about to explode.”
“Is anyone inside?”
“A woman, but it’s impossible to get her out.”
I’m going down.”
The boy said “I’ll go with you.”
The car was upside down and the roof was crushed flat. A woman was lying in a small ‘tunnel’. She wasn’t hurt bad, but her arms were pinned by her side. Hez asked if she hear him.
“Yes, I’ve been praying for someone to help me.”
“I’m going to lay down and hold your hair, and this boy will pull us out.”
They laid down behind a large rock, and in a few minutes the car exploded. The mountain was very steep and hard to climb up, so an ambulance crew took her up on a stretcher.

Spring Clean Your Home Office With These Easy Tips
(SPM Wire) In the pursuit of work-life balance, you may mentally compartmentalize your home office from the rest of the house. But that doesn’t mean this space should get a pass where spring cleaning is concerned. Here are three easy ways to spruce up your workspace this season:
1. File: Make time to finally tackle that growing stack of paperwork. Decide what needs to be filed away, what needs to be shredded, and what can simply be recycled. (This would be a good time to manage those digital files as well.) If you don’t already have a dedicated filing system, put one in place to keep things organized moving forward. Short on floor space? Use a wall-mounted paper organizer instead of a traditional filing cabinet.
2. Dust: Improve indoor air
quality for healthier, happier working hours. Periodically dust your desk, your computer and monitor, the baseboards, lamps and the tops of ceiling fans. Vacuum the carpet and rugs and sweep the floor. Also, consider using an air purifier to reduce dust, allergens and other air pollutants. If you’re not sensitive to pollen, invite a fresh breeze by cracking open a window on warmer days.
3. Disinfect: After a rough cold and flu season, it’s a good idea to reset your workspace by disinfecting the items you touch most frequently, such as doorknobs, cabinet handles, light switches, your keyboard, your mouse, landline receivers and handheld devices. This is especially important to add to your checklist if your home office is visited by clients or colleagues.

Circumstances are improving for Texas grain producers as spring plantings get underway in southern parts of the state, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert.

below $3.50 in summer 2020. Cash corn was just below $9 per bushel last summer.

Mark Welch, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension grain market economist, Bryan-College Station, said strong grain prices, improving planting conditions and lower input costs are likely to encourage producers going into the season.

Welch said soil moisture conditions have improved across much of the state. Some areas in Central Texas, the South Plains, Rolling Plains and Panhandle remained severely to exceptionally dry, but widespread rains have improved conditions for twothirds of the state, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Some parts of East Texas and South Texas are dealing with excessive rain. Welch said AgriLife Extension agents in the Coastal Bend reported growers were eager to plant corn but that soggy fields are delaying equipment access.
“I do think the moisture improvement favors grain production,” he said. “Some areas need more rain before planting, but most producers are going to plant grain or cotton depending on their rotation schedule. It’s good for growers to have options and moderated input costs creates more room for potential profit.”
CENTRAL- Some moisture was received, followed by very high winds. Soil moisture was mostly adequate.
Temperatures fluctuated from the 40s-70s with nighttime temperatures reaching below freezing. Overall rangeland and pasture conditions were poor. Livestock were in fair condition and received heavy rations of supplemental feed. Producers were preparing for spring planting with some already planting corn. Wheat and oats were in fair condition after the recent moisture.
EAST- The district received heavy amounts of rain over recent weeks. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate to surplus. Some parts of the district were completely soaked. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor to good. Ponds and creeks were full. Plants and trees began to green up and bloom. Temperature fluctuations have been tough on crops and livestock. Hay supplies continued to run
it
NORTH- Soil moisture was short to adequate across the district. Heavy rainfall left some pastures soaked and muddy. Some sunshine would help grazing conditions amid the hay shortage. Wheat conditions were below normal due to the recent winter freeze. Hay was still in high demand. Livestock conditions were good. No insect or disease outbreaks were reported. Grain prices remain historically strong despite declining from record highs in 2022, Welch said.
Wheat cash prices are still over $8 per bushel – $8.84 per bushel for the northern Panhandle this week. Cash prices peaked over $12 per bushel after Russia invaded Ukraine last spring. In late summer 2020, the cash price of wheat in Texas was below $4 per bushel.
Corn prices are also relatively strong – right around $8 per bushel – compared to just
Welch’s only concern for all grains is that better growing conditions and price incentives could translate into more planted acres and higher yields that push supplies beyond demand. A slowing global economy could also tamp demand for grains.
Some mid-western grainproducing areas, especially western Kansas, continue to experience drought that could impact overall U.S. grain production. Production in Brazil, which is expected to be the world’s largest exporter of corn, could also impact prices. Harvest time of Brazil’s second season corn crop coincides with much of Central Texas. “It’s a big old world, and the competition is growing,” he said. “Weather will be the big factor for everyone and determine supply, but record yields and an economic slowdown could dampen pricing opportunities.”

(StatePoint) Smartphones are our lifeline – we use them to connect us to just about everything and everyone in our world. Americans check their phones an average of 344 times a day — once every four minutes — according to a 2022 Review.org survey. But when was the last time you upgraded your phone? If it’s been more than two years, you may be missing out on some of the latest tech upgrades. Here are five must-have features to consider when shopping for a new smartphone:
• Battery Life: When it comes to battery life, you may not realize what you’ve been missing out on until you start using your new phone. A decade ago, smartphone
battery capacity ranged from 1560mAh to 3200mAh, according to findings from Android Authority. Today, that capacity typically ranges from 4000mAh to 5000mAh, with some batteries as large as 6000mAh. And, the latest development of USB-C ports has allowed for faster charging capabilities, charging a near dead phone in just 30 minutes. Look for phones with fast charging technology, from 15W to 20W, and wireless charging options.
• Phone Storage: Storage matters, especially if you’re a business owner, gaming enthusiast or social media influencer. Read-Only Memory (ROM), the internal main storage on your phone, allows you to store media, files and games, and ranges anywhere from 64GB to 128GB, even 256GB and higher in some of the latest models. Random Access Memory (RAM) is used for short-term data like apps, photos and videos. The more RAM you have, the more multitasking you can do. When purchasing a new phone, look for at least 6GB to 8GB of
• Camera: Phones have nearly replaced traditional cameras, with 90% of people using only their smartphones to take photos versus digital cameras, according to 3D Insider. If you’re an avid photo taker, make sure your new phone features editing software, a variety of camera lenses, like ultra-wide and telephoto, and special functions like night mode to optimize lighting.
• Network: How you stay connected is an important decision. The latest deals can help you select a phone and wireless provider. For example, Samsung just unveiled its latest Galaxy S23 lineup, and T-Mobile is the only provider that can light up 5G standalone three-carrier aggregation, unleashing faster speeds and better responsiveness for some of the newest 5G smartphones – 16% faster speeds on average than phones without it. And switching to what studies have shown is America’s largest, fastest and most reliable 5G network comes with perks. New customers can get

$200 off via a virtual prepaid card (allow 8 weeks) for each line they switch to T-Mobile – that’s $800 off for a family of four. And paired with T-Mobile’s offer to save $800 on the new Samsung Galaxy S23 lineup via bill credits when they choose the Magenta Max plan, that family gets four new phones and saves a total of $4000. To learn more about Samsung’s latest Galaxy S23 Series lineup, visit www.t-mobile.com/cell-phones/brand/ samsung.
• Security: Gone are the days of remembering a PIN or typing in a password to safely access your phone’s data. Biometric security features like fingerprint, facial or voice recognition are crucial for keeping your private data secure. Most new smartphones feature in-display fingerprint screening and facial recognition, and more institutions like online banking apps are using this method now over passwords. Other important deciding factors include overall phone display, size and water resistance. Priorities may vary from person to person, but selecting what’s important for your new smartphone is something only you can determine.

The Alexander Hotel

[The 4th in a series of articles for the 175th anniversary of Bonham]
The beautiful Alexander Hotel was begun in 1888 and completed in 1889. This impressive building stood on the southeast corner of the Bonham Square for over threequarters of a century.
It was operated as a hotel for 75 years before closing its
doors in 1963. In its “heyday” the Alexander was regarded as the finest hotel in this part of the state, featuring 42 large

rooms. In addition to 42 rooms and two suites, the hotel also contained a barbershop, coffee shop, dining room, a ballroom and a hotel bar. The ballroom was the scene of many a cotillion, private dinner, and recital performance.
The hotel had stained glass windows in the arched windows on the top floor and featured beautiful hand carved staircases.
At one time this magnificent hotel was the center of the social world in Fannin County.
When theatrical companies visited Bonham, they stayed at the Alexander Hotel. Carrie Nation, the symbol of womanhood and temperance, visited Bonham in 1905 and after her rousing opera house talk, she retired to the hotel. In 1913
Al Jolson also stayed at the Alexander when he appeared at Bonham’s Steger Opera
House. The great orator, William Jennings Bryan, also spent the night at the Alexander Hotel.
The main entrance to the
hotel was on 4th Street (Sam Rayburn Drive) but the side entrance on Center was also used.
For some reason the sign over the side entrance said “Alexandria Hotel.” No one knows why.
Mr. and Mrs. E. F. White, the parents of Mrs. Rex (Elizabeth) Hendrix, managed the hotel for about 35 years.
They moved from their home in the Russell Heights area about 1925 to an apartment on the third floor. Mrs. Hendrix has told the story of them “sitting on the balcony overlooking 4th Street, looking down at the
courthouse square at the early cars and horse drawn vehicles that traveled the street below.”
Around 1920 the hotel lobby and entrance were moved to the east side of the building and the ground floor was remodeled to accommodate several retail establishments including F.W. Woolworth which occupied the largest of these spaces.
After time caught up with this major social center of North Texas in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was structurally condemned, after failing to pass modern fire codes. With the all-wood interior declared a fire hazard and uninhabitable under the fire code, the upper floors were turned over to pigeons, which raised several generations of families in the hotel’s sinks and bathtubs.
The top two floors were removed in May of 1975. At that time the main floor was totally remodeled into new offices. The Alexander Hotel’s colorful 87-year-old history was over.
The Fannin County Museum of History has many beautiful historic fashions which would have been worn to events in the hotel. Stop by the Museum to see these items.
