Gardening in February GARDEN TIP • Apply pre-emergent to the lawn between now and March 15 to control spring germinating weeds. Water in the preemergent lightly to get the granules off the leaves and
onto the soil. • For cool-season, non-grassy weeds such as clover, henbit, dandelions, and chickweed, apply a broad-leafed weed killer containing 2-4-D when daytime temperatures will be
above 70 degrees and no rain
expected for 48 hours. 07/02/19 • Apply horticultural oil spray
to fruit trees, hollies, camellias, oaks, crape myrtles, and others early this month before new buds
begin to swell to control scale insects. • Consider keeping a garden journal with information on planting dates, varieties planted, care instructions, and notes on observations and experiences with plant selections.

PLANT • Bare-root roses • Move established trees and shrubs: Leave as large a soil ball as possible keeping the roots intact. Prune the top growth and thin to half to compensate for root loss. • Vegetable garden: Onions and peas early. Cole crops such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Irish potatoes, leafy and root vegetables such as leaf lettuce, carrots, radishes, turnips, beets, chard, and spinach later this month. • In the flower garden: Early in the month plant pinks and snapdragons. Later in the month plant larkspur, English daisies, sweet alyssum, ornamental chard, petunias, calendulas, Iceland poppies, and stocks. • Dig and divide mallows, gloriosa daisies, cannas, mums, fall asters and salvias later in the month before they start growing. PRUNE • Bush roses: Remove dead, dying, and weak canes. Leave 4 to 8 healthy canes, and remove about half of the top growth. Make each cut just above a bud that faces out from the center. Use good shears that will make clean cuts. • Climbing roses should be trained and not pruned. Weave long canes through openings in trellises or arbors and tie them with jute twine or plastic/wire plant ties. Securing canes now prevents damage from winter winds, and contributes to a more refined look to the garden when roses are blooming. Continued See Gardening on page 9

Fannin County Precinct One
Road Work updates for Week ending 2/1/2024 As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. If you live on a county road you have not been happy this week. The cold and rain the previous two weeks have caused us to have major road problems. We have two rock trucks running and two graders on the roads fixing the worst areas: CR 1020, 1030, 2035, 2036, 4027, 4030, 4040, and 4310, have all gotten rock this week. We are grading roads around these areas also as we wait between rock trucks. The backhoe is out on various roads cleaning out stopped up culverts in the north part of the precinct daily. One of our three graders is down for overheating or we would be doing more roads. Tree trimming was done on 1020, 1030, and in the Ivanhoe area. Please email me at dmcqueen@fanninco.net if you have a culvert that is crushed and allowing water to run around it and back into the road. We need to get these fixed as they are costing all of us money in lost gravel and poor roadways. Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One 903-965-7030

POTATO SKINS 8 medium russet potatoes, scrubbed clean 4 Tbsp. canola oil salt to taste 2 Tbsp. butter, melted 11/2 c. grated sharp Cheddar cheese 8 slices bacon, fried and chopped 2 green onions, sliced 1/2 c. sour cream Preheat the oven to 400°. Brush the potatoes with a good coating of canola oil. Sprinkle them with salt. Bake them for 35 to 45 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the skin in starting to crisp. Slice the potatoes in half lengthwise. Then use a spoon to cut a rim around the edge of each half. And scoop out the insides. Raise the oven temperature to 425°. Brush the skins on the inside with the melted butter, then put them back in the oven for 3 minutes. After that, use your tongs to turn the skins to the other side. Brush that side with more butter and return the skins to the oven until crisp, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the oven. Fill the skins with a small amount of grated Cheddar and place them into the oven just long enough to melt the cheese. Sprinkle on some of the chopped bacon and some of the sliced green onions. Place a small dollop of sour cream. Serve immediately! ENJOY!!! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Letter to the Editor I believe in good medical care and I think the majority of citizens would agree. My wife and I have had several incidents of needing medical care in the last 3 years. We can say without a doubt that TMC-Bonham is the best care we have seen. On January 1 of this year I was experiencing severe abdominal pain. I went to a hospital outside of Fannin County. My pain finally eased up and the doctors there thought it was just indigestion or ulcer. They sent me home with prescriptions. On January 17, 2024 I had the same pain to reoccur. This time I went to TMC-Bonham, where ER Dr. Prince said he was determined to find out what was causing my pain and did not intend to release me until he discovered what the cause was. Hours and much testing later he said, “I have good and bad news.” Good news is, I know what is causing your pain. Bad news is, it is your gallbladder. He said, “You have a large stone in the neck

of the gallbladder and it is infected and inflamed.” He did not think I should leave the Hospital in that condition. I asked him to set things up for surgery. I had a good visit with the Hospital General Surgeon Dr. Jack Forest. He impressed me and was very direct with what must happen next. He operated that evening and removed my gallbladder. Great job, pain gone! I am very thankful for those involved in making TMC-Bonham a better hospital: Chris Zeringue-CEO, Nurses, ER Doctors and all attendants. My wife and I both believe TMC-Bonham is the best medical care for our area. I say watch it grow. Many more good Doctors are needed in various areas and this will happen as people understand the gem in their backyard. Thank you all for the excellent treatment and care! Fannin County Biblical Round Table
The date and time for the Fannin county Biblical Round Table is now etched in stone. The round table meeting will begin at 7:00 pm on February 29 at the Bonham MultiPurpose center. Remember everyone is welcome. The round table meeting will consist of 4 or 5 guests who will discuss the topic of the evening. Attendees not on the round table may pose questions to the table at the end
of the session. The topic of the night will be the inerrancy of the scriptures themselves. Is the bible true, and can we trust the scriptures. In the next issue we will address the format and protocol for the evening. Remember February 29, 7:00 pm multi-purpose center. Send any suggestions or questions you might have to Joe Moore at Jpmoorejpm@gmail. com or call 903-815-8136
Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Count Your Blessings” Hello everyone! The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi in Philippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Over the past few years, the Lord has greatly blessed our church in many ways. We see Him at work in our lives, and we sometimes take His blessings for granted. This is a very dangerous thing. We should always remember what He has done for us, and we should never be ungrateful or ashamed of it. He tells us in Luke chapter 9 that if we are ashamed of Him, then He will be ashamed of us. May we never forget God’s blessings in our lives. That being said, I am once
The Torah
by Dawn McGee
“Torah” is the Hebrew word referring to the first 5 Books of the Bible written by Moses. It’s the same word used in Scripture often translated as “law.” It has multiple levels of teaching and instruction. On the surface, Torah is the story about one generation of slaves who God brought out of Egypt with great signs and wonders, made them into a free nation, and brought them into the Promised Land. Genesis explains how they got stuck in Egypt to begin with. But under the surface, Torah is the story of redemption and particularly, the Redeemer. It gives detailed prophecy of His 1st coming (as Messiah son of Joseph), His return (later understood to be Messiah son of David), and His future Kingdom. And going even deeper, Torah is the guide for the last generation. In 1 Cor 10:11 Paul says that the Wilderness Journey (the
again reminded of a classic hymn written by Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr. in 1897. Of the 408 hymns in the hymnal that we use, this is one of my favorites. “When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.” “Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.” Bro. Josh Stevenson Book of Numbers) was written specifically to the last generation, so that we might not make the same mistakes they did. But above all, Torah is the Word of God. And to receive it, one must first hear it. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) If one doesn’t hear the Word of God, one won’t understand why the Word was made into flesh to die. Abraham believed the Word and it was accounted to him as righteousness. (Rom 4:3) But he had to hear it first. There are many things to learn from Abraham’s life and relationship with God, as it teaches the principles of our faith: FAITH is accounted for RIGHTEOUSNESS. RIGHTEOUSNESS has kissed JUSTICE. JUSTICE demands payment (or SACRIFICE) and with SACRIFICE you receive SALVATION (Jesus’ name in Hebrew is “Yeshua”, meaning “salvation” and is found throughout the OT. Next week.....Genesis

The Jesus Plan

Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ Peter made this statement concerning Jesus, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Truly, Jesus is the way and salvation is in the Lord. When some “went back, and walked no more with him” (John 6:66). “Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? (John 6:67). Then Peter made this statement, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). Do we really trust in Jesus, the Son of God? Do we really believe that He has the “words of eternal life”? Consider the words of Jesus. Jesus told the Jews that refused to believe in Him, “ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). As Philip taught the Ethiopian eunuch Jesus, “the eunuch said, See, here is wa-
ter; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” (Acts 8:36-37). Jesus preached repentance. Luke records that the Lord said, “but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3,5). In the first gospel lesson, Peter answered the question of “what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37), which was the response from the gospel preached. Peter answered, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). Jesus made this statement, “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Paul states that “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:910).
Jesus commanded, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mark 16:15-16). Peter wrote, “even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21). Many disagree with baptism, even though Jesus commanded it. Jesus said, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19). Who has the right to stand against the authority of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost? Jesus promised salvation and eternal life to those who are faithful. John pens the words of Jesus, “be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Matthew also pens the words of Jesus, “he that endureth to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 10:22). This is the message of Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God. Paul wrote, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Galatians 4:16).
The Second Great Awakening
By Lyn Holly- Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church
The Fannin County Call to Prayer for Revival and Spiritual Awakening is now only days away. Believers from all over Fannin County will gather on Sunday, February 18 at 5:00 PM at 7th and Main Baptist Church in Bonham. It will be no ordinary call to prayer. Often, we gather in our churches to intercede for various physical needs of friends and family. While that is very important, this meeting is not that. We are gathering to pray for another great spiritual awakening that will turn our community and nation back to God. We are praying for another mighty move of God like He has done in the past. Last week, I attempted to describe one event like this called the First Great Awakening. Words fall short when trying to describe these events. However, I would like to now attempt to describe the Second Great Awakening in our nation’s history. After the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, thousands of new settlers came to the New World, and many moved westward into the wilderness of Ohio and Kentucky. Once again, sin and wickedness ruled in many of the cities and in the pioneer regions. These were the days of the Camp Meetings. Families piled into wagons and buggies and traveled to a designated place to spend a couple of weeks in a time of fellowship, preaching and worship after the crops were “laid by” each August. Many of them were so isolated, so they packed an entire year of church into this short period of time. One notable camp meeting took place near Cane Ridge, Kentucky. At a time when the entire population of the region was not more than 50,000 people, over 25,000 people
gathered in August for the Cane Ridge Camp meeting. For two years prior to this, a group of Cumberland Presbyterians had been gathering every Saturday as a day of fasting and prayer before Cane Ridge Camp Meeting. God showed up “big-time.” James B. Finley, a Methodist circuit rider preacher, described in his journal exactly what he saw: “The noise was like the roar of Niagara. The vast sea of human beings seemed to be agitated as if by a storm. I counted seven ministers all preaching at one time, some on stumps, others in wagons, and one was standing on a tree that had fallen. Some people were singing, others praying, some crying for mercy, while others were shouting most vociferously. A strange supernatural power seemed to pervade the entire mass of mind collected there. I stepped up on a log, where I could have a better view—
the scene that presented itself was indescribable. At one time, I saw at least five hundred people fall to their faces in prayer, as if a battery of a thousand guns had been opened upon them and then immediately there were shouts and prayers that rent the heavens.” Wow! Wouldn’t be wonderful to see God move again like that? Join me in praying for another great spiritual awakening. Why? Because these times are truly desperate. Once again, “sin and wickedness rule.” As a community and a nation, we have turned away from God and His Word. I truly believe our nation simply cannot survive much longer on our current course. Our only hope is a true, Holy Spirit-filled, God-sent revival. God, please manifest your presence among us again “big-time.” Would you join me in praying for this?

Last time we talked about sizing a crate for your puppy, allowing him to get used to his crate for about a day letting him come and go as he pleases, getting ready for his very first night in the crate. We also talked about the first night with your pup, withholding water for a couple of hours before bedtime, and making sure he's peed before we go to bed. As you put him in his new crate for the night, say "kennel up!", put him in, tell him he’s a good boy, give him a small treat and close the gate. Again, you can use any cue besides “kennel up” for him to go into his crate, but you should use 'something' as a crate cue. I also suggest having his crate in your bedroom at night. This way he can hear and smell you...and you can hear him when he whimpers
Training!
pamperedpawsdoghotel.com because he needs to go out to potty. Puppies can hold it about an hour for every month of age, but truthfully, they can usually exceed that parameter somewhat. He may whimper a little bit in the beginning, when you first put him in the crate. Try to ignore that as long as you can. Whatever you do, do not let him out! If you let him out of that crate, you have just lost. Because from now on, little Max understands if he protests, you'll let him out. He will have figured out the pattern. So you basically need to try to endure any crying. Now, if he peed before bed, and he just won't stop say beyond 20 minutes, you have to do something so you can get some sleep. I would suggest taking the crate to another part of the house where you can close the door and not hear him. But you still need to set your alarm for probably three hours out, so you can take him outside. Because dropping the ball on this and allowing him to
have an accident in the crate would be BAD. This scenario is not ideal, because I much prefer to have the crate in my bedroom, where I can hear my puppy, and take him out when he cries. But let's assume your puppy only whines a little bit and then goes to sleep. When he wakes up because he has to go, take him out of the crate and carry him outside to his spot. Note: I made a mistake in the beginning with my last puppy, by taking her out of the crate while I put my shoes on to go out, and while I was doing that, she peed on the floor....so don't do that! Get prepared to go out, then take your puppy out of the crate. - Carry him outside, take him to his spot, and after he pees, bring him straight back in and put him back in his crate. He may be restless at first because now he's awake. He might want to play. All of that's too bad. We're going back to sleep now. More than likely he will settle fairly quickly.

I’ve worked on roads and equipment for the last 2 decades, and with my prior title as commissioner, I understand the procedures and what it takes to get results. I was once the youngest Commissioner in Texas, at the age of 26 years old, serving 2 consecutive terms. I would like the opportunity to serve the citizens of Precinct 3 again.”

Leading the proposed sites were those suggested by Commissioner Magness for the inspections to be held either at his Precinct 3 Barn location or at county owned property across from the North Texas Municipal Water District Operation Center on FM 897. DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATON AND ACTION ITEMS: 13. Approve moving forward with repair of the Courthouse basement floor – County Judge: Co-Owner of Allied Concrete Systems, Jeremy Stewart spoke regarding the existing drainage issue with the basement floor of the Courthouse after Judge Cunningham explained the need to move on with repairing the floor. Mr. Stewart cited the options available for the repairs being the option of the basic “functional” repair work done just on the pump room at a cost of $23,937 with an additional optional cost for work done on a separate area coming in at $19,712. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to move forward with action on this issue with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion. A discussion ensued before a vote was taken with Judge Cunningham clarifying this action could possibly mean going out for bids on this. A resident of Bonham spoke to suggest sump pumps being a less costly fix for the existing issue after which a resident of Ravenna questioned the logic of hiring the initial subcontractor who previously worked on the defective basement floor to repair the current problem. Judge Cunningham responded to the queries noting that exploration for responsibility is ongoing for things that are wrong with the courthouse “from construction defects to fraud” while touching on the possibility of future lawsuits. After an in-depth discussion
on the speculation of responsible parties, Judge Cunningham noted the need to get the drainage issue in the basement fixed. Mr. Stewart concluded his statements and more discussion ensued before the vote to move forward with repair of the floor passed. 14. Approve means of payment for Document Logistix software used by County Law Enforcement Agencies through October 2024; $28,586.87 – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane along with District Attorney Richard Glaser, explained this matter. After a discussion regarding previous estimates given by the company being significantly less than the currently stated owed amount; recent discussions with Document Logistix and a Fannin County resident offering his assistance in negotiating a reduced amount; a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to pass on this with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed with the Judge abstaining from the vote. 15. Discussion with possible action regarding Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Ector for road work – Commissioner Precinct 1: After some discussion, it was noted more scrutiny was needed on the details of the agreement, a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to pass on this with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed. 16. Approve working with Precinct employees to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner McQueen led a discussion on this which resulted in him making a motion to proceed forward providing requirements are determined and how long a participating employee would need to stay with the county. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Self and the motion passed. 17. Discussion with possible action regarding relocating the Precinct 4 barn further from the City of Bonham – Commissioner Precinct 4: Commissioner Kopf led a discussion on this, noting all that a move would entail with suggestions made for a potential relocation in the future. No action needed. 18. Approve Interlocal Agreement between Fannin County and the City of Leonard related to development and implementation of regulations in Extraterritorial Jurisdictions (ETJ) – County Judge: Civil Attorney Andy Garner spoke to advise the court of a pending meeting where final details on this could be determined. ningham commented on the research being done into looking at who might be responsible for repair work needed on the courthouse. 21. Justice Center - County Judge: Judge Cunningham touched on demolition work being done and meetings being held in the interest of keeping costs at a minimal for the county before responding to a rumor that the county is in debt by $300,000,000. He clarified with the help of Ms. Whipple that the actual number of county debt is at $29,000,000. Photo by Rich Hilliard Story and photos by Rich Hilliard January concluded with a quartet of Fannin County high school girls' basketball teams having already assured extending their seasons into the playoffs. In 23-1A, Dodd City and Savoy have again claimed district berths. For the Lady Hornets, it equates their 14th-straight
postseason -- still possibly via a 12th-consecutive undefeated district title, through Feb. 1. For the Lady Cardinals, it equals their first back-toback trips to the playoffs since a six-in-a-row streak completed in 2014. In 14-2A, Honey Grove and Sam Rayburn have garnered district berths. It equates the Lady Warriors' second-straight post-
season advance. It equals a return to the playoffs after a year absence for the Lady Rebels who last season got edged out via a fourth-place play-in loss. Meanwhile, Leonard and Ector ended the month still in contention for a return via the fourth-and-final postseason berths, respectively, in 11-3A and 23-1A for the first time since 2020 and 2022.

Postseason play will again include Sam Rayburn's Lady Rebels this girls' basketball season, after a rare absence. Sam Rayburn ended January tied at 10-2 atop 14-2A girls' basketball with Honey Grove, with two district games remaining. The Lady Rebels narrowly missed the playoffs in 2023, falling to Whitewright in a fourth-place play-in.
Bonhi-ex Mallory tops Fannin trio on AC Roos' 2024 baseball team appearances as a pitcher last
By Rich Hilliard
Three former Fannin County high school standouts appear on the 2024 Austin College baseball players roster: Trystan Mallory, Brant Stuber, Kaiden West. Mallory, a 2021 Bonham graduate, returns for his third season with the Roos after earning an honorable mention from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for his sophomore season efforts. Mallory, a southpaw, struck out 53 batters in 55.2 innings, averaged 8.57 strikeouts per
nine innings and, as a starter, allowed only 62 hits in 12 appearances overall -- all placing him amongst the best in 2023 in SCAC baseball. He also that season garnered his first two collegiate wins. Stuber, another Bonham 2021 graduate, also returns for his third season with Austin College, listed as an infielder. Through 37 games, he has a .939 fielding percentage, .425 on-base percentage and .308 slugging percentage. West, a 2020 Trenton graduate, made a couple of
season -- his first on the Roos' roster. Additionally, West's former teammate, Justin Lambright, a 2019 Trenton graduate, will now serve as Austin College's assistant coach, working with the Roos' pitchers. Austin College will open its season on the road: Feb. 13, at Arlington Baptist, 1/4 p.m.; Feb. 16-17, at Mary Hardin-Baylor, 7/12/3 p.m. The Roos play host in Sherman to Texas Wesleyan on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.
