fered by the Fannin County Children’s Center for the benefit of abused and neglected children. CASA is seeking adult volunteers who can complete training and pass background checks to be appointed by the 336th District Court to serve as Guardian ad Litem for children

of several programs of-

in foster care.

In that role, CASA volunteers regularly visit their assigned child or sibling group and gather information from parents, other family, teachers, medical personnel, therapists and others in order to make recommendations to the court on what will be in the child’s best interest. They prepare court reports and testify at court hearings too. Many CASA advocates successfully manage to volunteer while also working full time and spending time with their families.

The Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is another program of the Children’s Center. Compassionate CAC volunteers are needed to supervise children, youth and families who are at the center for interviews or counseling.

Other volunteers are needed for tasks not directly working with children, such as organizing clothes and other items in the Rainbow Room, helping with light repairs and maintenance of the building and preparing food for various meetings and trainings.

There will be an informational session on Tuesday, February 7 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm at the center. Information about all the volunteer opportunities available at the center will be reviewed, as well as information about the application process and training requirements. Attendance at the information session is not a requirement to become a volunteer, however, it is a helpful step to learning more about what it takes to be a volunteer and give an opportunity to ask questions. Attending the info session will not obligate anyone to become a volunteer.

The next training sessions for CASA volunteers will start March 7. Participants will gain knowledge and learn skills needed to become an advocate for abused children in foster care.

Applications are now being accepted for all types of volunteers at the Children’s Center. The deadline to apply to be in the next CASA training class is Feb 28. For more information about the Children’s Center and the volunteer opportunities, visit www.fanninccc.org and/or call (903) 583-4339.

Commercial truck driving training returns to Grayson College

Denison, Texas - Beginning in February, the Grayson College Center for Workplace Learning (CWL) will again offer noncredit, commercial truck driving training classes. In addition to the courses that prepare individuals to drive tractor-trailer rigs, Grayson College is also offering Hazmat, Permit Review and Refresher courses for professional truck drivers.

Classes will be offered monthly, and scholarships valued up to $2,350 are available for Texas residents to attend and certify in Permit Exam Preparation and Professional Truck Driving courses.

“Tractor-trailer truck drivers are a high-demand occupation in Texoma with over 800 job postings for trained drivers in Texoma in the last year,” said Dr. Djuna Forrester, CWL Executive Director. “Thanks to the scholarship funding from Texas’s Coordinating Board for Higher Education’s TRUE grant and community support, we are thrilled to return truck driver training to Grayson College.”

“At Grayson College we are committed to offering programs that meet employers’ needs and provide opportunities for our students to launch their careers locally,” explained Dr. Jeremy McMillen, President. “Tractor-trailer drivers are vital to sustaining and growing the economy of the Texoma region and the state. Grayson College is proud to bring back its Commercial Truck Driving program and provide a pathway to success for even more students.”

The Truck Driving Certification program prepares graduates to drive tractortrailer rigs, take the Commercial Driver’s Licensing Exam and gain employment as a commercial truck driver. Tractor-trailer drivers typically earn wages between $14 and $30 per hour in Texoma. The fourweek program meets from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Classes start monthly. Generous $2,350 scholarships are currently available. Scholarship recipients will be responsible for $2,450.

Individuals interested in the Truck Driving Certification program can find more information at grayson. edu/cwl or by contacting Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning at 903-463-8765.

to rooms you don’t want him in. - Some dog owners remove area rugs until their puppy is potty trained, because your rug sort of feels like grass, and some puppies may automatically want to ‘go’ there. And while yes, we’re trying to set our puppy up for success by keeping an eye on him and not giving him an opportunity to go to the bathroom indoors, sometimes we have other stuff to do. It’s absolutely ok crate your puppy at these times. Periodically being relegat-

ed to ‘alone time’ in his little “den” is perfectly natural for a puppy. Don’t feel sorry for him, as this is exactly what his mom would do. Of course he’s not going to be in his crate for hours and hours. And if that’s your plan for a puppy, you probably shouldn’t have a puppy. But if he hast to be in there for an hour or so, he’ll be fine. And you have the advantage of his natural aversion to soiling his den.

To teach your puppy to

tell you when he wants to go out, try sitting him by the door before you go out to potty each time. It’ll look like this: Get him to follow you to the door, put him in a sitting position, then quickly open the door and go out. Each time before you go out, sit him by the door, then quickly open it and go out. He will figure out the pattern that before he goes out, he sits by the door. Ultimately, you’ll be busy with something, and you’ll

look over and there he’ll be... sitting by the door!

Of course when that happens, you reward him with “Good boy! Let’s go out!”

Some people want to use bells hanging on the door for this. That’s not a bad idea, but bells may scratch your door over time, and you can’t take bells with you when you go to someone else’s house or you’re in a hotel room. Finally, the best thing about potty training? It’s temporary.

[The first in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham]

While the settlement of Fannin County began in various

locations on Red River, settlement around the area that was to become Bonham began with the arrival in 1836 of Bailey Inglish (and other pioneers), who settled about a mile east of the current Courthouse Square.

Bailey Inglish in 1837 built Ft. Inglish, a blockhouse and stockade, on 1,250 acres of land located on Bois d’Arc Creek near

timber and water supplies.

The Fannin County seat was first established at Warren on Red River, but when the Texas Legislature in 1842 passed a law requiring every county seat to be as near to the geographic center of the county as possible Bois d’Arc became County seat on January 26, 1843.

Bois d’Arc was renamed Bon-

ham on February 26, 1844, in honor of James Butler Bonham who died at the Alamo.

On February 2, 1848, Bonham was incorporated as a city. The creation of the county seat provided the impetus for Bonham to grow, however slowly. At the midpoint of the 19th century the nucleus was well established and Bonham took on more distinct characteristics of a town.

The newspaper at Clarksville (The Standard), contained in 1853-54 advertisements for businesses in Bonham, which provide a lot of information on the

life at that time.

A pioneer wrote: “In those days all goods and groceries were hauled in wagons from Jefferson and Houston, principally by ox teams. The first steam engine that ever came to Fannin County was brought in on a wagon by Thomas Williams. He hauled it from Houston with ten yolk of oxen to his mill two miles south of Bonham, on the banks of Bois d’Arc creek. They were six weeks making the trip. It had rained and the roads were muddy.” Bonham had four stores—C. C.

Alexander, J. W. and J. R, Russell

& Company, Nunnelee & Hofford and W. D. and J. B. Oliphint.

Alexander did a large wholesale business, furnishing the forts and outposts of this frontier for 150 miles to the north and west. There was not a day during the year but he was receiving and unloading goods and also selling and sending off goods. His purchases amounted to probably more than half a million dollars per year. J. W. and J. R. Russell also did a large wholesale trade. The other merchants confined themselves to a retail business, which brought customers for thirty miles around.

Of course no photographs exist of these early days, but the photo below of the west side of the Square is one of the earliest we have.

The Fannin County Museum of History, located a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square in Bonham in the old Texas & Pacific Train Depot, has many items relating to the early days of Bonham. Drop into the Museum to see these items. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, noon – 4pm.

RED VELVET BROWNIES

10 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greas-

ing

1 c. sugar

½ c. light brown sugar

2 eggs, slightly beaten

¼ c. buttermilk

½ tsp. white vinegar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 c. cake flour

½ tsp. salt

2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder

2 Tbsp. red food coloring

Glaze:

4 oz. cream cheese

2 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened

For the brownies, preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Line an 8 x 8 inch pan with parchment paper, then grease the paper. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar and brown sugar. Mix in the eggs. Mix in the buttermilk, vinegar and vanilla, followed by the flour and salt. Mix in the cocoa powder, then add the food coloring and mix until thoroughly combined. (Be sure to scrape the sides of the bowl.)

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove brownies and let cool.

For the glaze, in a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and vanilla and mix well. Mix in 1 Tbsp of the milk. Drizzle the glaze on the cooled brownies and top with the chopped pecans (if using).

Who Do I Represent?

Christians are call ambassadors for Christ by the apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:20. This means that we, members of Christ’s church, are to represent Christ each day of our lives.

In representing the Lord, we are to portray Him in the way that we speak. We are told to “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it

Prayer for Fannin County

may minister grace unto the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29). Are we inviting others to worship and study?

Children of God are to live pure lives. As we live lives that render Christ, we must deny ourselves. Christ said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Are we using time wisely?

In following Christ we are to be in his image and “have no fellowship with the unfruitful

Fannin County

works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11). Are we keeping ourselves on the strait and narrow path?

As we have Christ in our lives and follow HIM, we are to conform to the Lord. Jesus calls on us to “continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). Are we studying the Bible? Let us strive to be the ambassadors for Christ.

If you would like to join others in regular prayer for Fannin County, you are Welcome: 2nd Tuesday, 5th Tuesday @ Noon. Bonham Historic Depot, 1 N. Center Street, Bonham. For more info: Text Sharon Terry, 903-227-3834.

Sunday Morning Re-Wind ““Count Your Blessings””

Hello everyone!

We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning!

The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi in Philippians 2:13, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Over the past few years, the Lord has greatly blessed our church in many ways. We see Him at work in our lives, and we sometimes take His blessings for granted. This is a very dangerous thing. We should always remember what He has done for us, and we should never be ungrateful or ashamed of it. He tells us in Luke chapter 9 that if we are ashamed of Him, then He will be ashamed of us. May we never forget God’s blessings in our lives.

That being said, I am once again reminded of a classic hymn written by Rev. Johnson Oatman, Jr. in 1897. Of the 408 hymns in the hymnal that we use, this is one of my favorites.

the Lord hath done.”

“Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your blessings, see what God hath done; Count your blessings, name them one by one; Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.”

If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church.

Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you

this coming Sunday!

OBITUARIES

OMEGA FLOYD

Omega Floyd went to be with her risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 27, 2023. She passed away in Stillwater, Oklahoma, surrounded by her children. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm at Bible Baptist Church in Frederick, Oklahoma on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Omega Nadine Albert was born in Hendrix, Oklahoma on November 11, 1926, to William and Virgie (McDonald) Albert. She attended Achille Schools where she played basketball and even baseball on the Achille Eagles boys’ team. She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Vernon Cleo Floyd, on August 8, 1942, and they were married for an incredible 65 years. Following their marriage, Omega and Vernon began a family together and served in churches and taught Sunday School in north Texas for several years. In May of 1954, Vernon accepted the pastorate for Bible Baptist Church where they both served faithfully, side by side, for over 50 years. Omega taught Sunday school, vacation bible school with her well known flannel illustrations, shepherded youth at Minnetonka Church Camp well into her seventies, and picked up thousands of children throughout the years to bring them to church. She spent her life in service to Bible Baptist Church and its people and touched countless families with her love and ministry throughout her lifetime.

In 1975, she bought the Spinning Wheel, “the store with a little bit of everything!” It became known in Frederick as a place where you could find fabric, odds and ends, a warm cup of tea, and good conversation. Omega spent many more hours visiting with friends sitting at the cutting table than actually selling fabric, but for her, creating relationships was always time well spent. Her grandchildren loved to visit her at the store, where she would let them play in the overflowing button box and never hesitated to open up her cash register to get them a special treat.

Omega treasured nothing in life more than her family and that is saying a lot, since her house was always packed with treasures. She threw late night coffee and tea parties with her grandchildren and loved her home to be overflowing with people, noise, and commotion during the holidays. Every family member was always sure they were her favorite. As a seasoned practical joker and one to never shy away from having fun, she was the source of much joy in her family. She is preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, her husband: Pastor Vernon Floyd in 2008; son, James Floyd in 1995; daughter in law, Debby Gant in 2004; grandson Tyler Floyd in 1992; and grandson Seth Floyd in 2020.

She is survived by two sons: Roy Floyd and wife Lynda of Bonham, Texas and Randy Floyd and wife Denise, of Enid, Oklahoma; two daughters, Dianne Gant and husband Allan, of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Debbie Morey and husband Brent, of Frederick, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren: Sean Floyd, Chad Floyd, Rory Hilliard, Charlie Gant, Josh Morey, Jake Gant, Jenna Morey, Zac Floyd, and Cole Floyd; ten greatgrandchildren: Will, Worth, and Wyatt Lacy, Kylie Walker, Matthew Floyd, Marley and Chandler Floyd, Easton and Jhett Floyd, Rocco Polidori-Gant, and numerous nieces and nephews. Omega taught us all many life lessons, including not to throw away “good stuff,” the importance of welcoming people from all walks of life, and to take the opportunity to “love on people’s necks” as often as you can. She leaves us with an abundance of warm memories and a legacy of love.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bible Baptist Church, Omega Floyd Memorial Fund, 1600 N. 15th St., Frederick, OK 73542, in loving memory of Omega Floyd.

“To Live Is Christ, And To Die Is Gain”

When a Christian dies we should also be filled with rejoicing. Truly, for the Christian, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). As a believer in Christ departs from this life they are immediately in a far better place (Philippians 1:23). They are with Christ! They have finished the race and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7); and that faith has become sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). They no longer see in a mirror dimly, but see Him face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). The object of their love, affection, and joy is before and with them forevermore. What glories await the Christian at death. One moment, a feeble sinner experiencing the miseries of this life, and the next moment, one who is adorned with the crown of righteousness (2 Timothy 4:8) in the presence of the King of Glory. There the Christian shall be–surrounded by His glory. A glory which banishes all our enemies. In that place there shall no longer be the experience of loss, grief, pain, discomfort, or regret. Rather, the saint shall dwell in sheer joy and bliss as they revel in the beauty and glory of their Savior and God forever. Therefore, we should rejoice at the death of a Christian, for as the Apostle Paul says, they are “in a far better place” (Philippians 1:23). There may be no greater understatement ever penned–for what glories await us!

When a brother or sister in the Lord passes away, there should be grief and rejoicing. They both have a place. We grieve for what is lost and rejoice at what is gained. That is a good Christian theology of Christian death.

BRENDA SUE CHAMBERS

Memorial Services for Brenda Sue Chambers, age 70, of Bonham, Texas were held at 1:00 P.M., Monday, February 6, 2023 at Wise Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Rev. Josh Lott officiated. Brenda was called home Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Medical City Frisco. Brenda was born July 6, 1952 in Columbus, MS, and was the daughter of Iona Sansing St. John and Robert St. John. Brenda moved to the Dallas area in 1966, and during her first marriage had three children - Karin Sinclair of Arlington, TX; Curtis Hambrick, of Sherman, TX; and Shelley Clifton, of Haslet, TX. She married David Chambers March 18, 1975, who brought into the marriage his daughter Kathy Laughlin, of The Colony, TX. While raising their family in Irving, TX, Brenda worked for Zales Corp. until her retirement in 2006. She later ran a successful eBay store.

During her spare time, Brenda enjoyed painting ceramics and thrifting for bargains at the local shops. If you ever visited Brenda’s house, you left with a bag of stuff that she probably bought especially for you. As her children grew, she supported their school activities, and loved the occasional visit to Galveston Island. Later, Brenda’s grandkids became the joys of her life, and she spent as much time as possible with Alex, Tyler, Ashton, Tommy, Matthew, Jayce, and later great-grandson Vance. She and David especially loved the holidays, when the whole family could gather. Brenda always had a way of doing for others, with little recognition and that’s the way that she wanted it. She stood by David during his numerous health issues through their 47 year marriage. Of late, Brenda became a fierce supporter of LGBTQ youth, and regularly wrote letters to local and state leaders on the groups; behalf.

Preceding Brenda are her parents, brothers R.B., Gilbert, and L.C. St. John, and sisters Kit Brown, and Dorothy Stewart, daughter-in-Law Karie Hambrick, and Son-in-law Barrett Clifton.

Brenda is survived by her beloved husband David, sister Peggy Honeycutt of Hamlet, NC, her children Karin, Curtis, Kathy (and husband James), Shelley Clifton, grandchildren Alex and Ashton Laughlin, Tyler and Jayce Hambrick, Thomas and Matthew Spikes, a variety of step-grandchildren, along with numerous extended family members and family of the heart, who will miss her terribly.

Donations to the Human Rights Campaign can be made in Brenda’s name.

Dominating District Defense:

Postseason-bound DC Lady Hornets nearing 11th-straight title via 23-1A

17.

DODD CITY -- A 13th-straight girls’ basketball postseason trip has been assured for Class 1A Dodd City’s Lady Hornets.

An 11th-consecutive district championship -- the previous 10 being undefeated titles -- most likely awaits them.

Dominating defense has again paved the way -- leading to one-sided outcomes during 23-1A play.

Savoy’s Lady Cardinals end postseason hoops drought

Class 1A Savoy has assured its first girls’ basketball postseason in nine years. The Lady Cardinals’ previous postseason came in 2014 -the last of then six-straight trips to the playoffs. It equated a second-consecutive bi-district finalist effort. Postseason season play will begin Feb. 13 or 14 with bi-district games.

Savoy’s Maddie Clark (4) throws a pass to teammate Alyson Bogard on Dec. 20 during non-district girls’ basketball.

Bonham-ex Reaves extending baseball career w/Blinn College

Former Bonham baseball standout Tanner Reaves is continuing his diamond career beyond high school at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas.

Reaves had a two-out RBI single on Jan. 27 for Blinn’s run during an 8-1 loss to Weatherford College to begin its seasonopening series.

The 2021 Bonham graduate followed with a game-tying solo home run on Jan. 28, as Blinn won the first game of a doubleheader, 12-2, over Weatherford.

Ex-Fannin diamond standouts on Austin College’s ‘23 rosters

Austin College diamond team rosters for 2023 include several former Fannin County standouts.

patrick, an outfielder and first baseman wearing No. 12, are again on the ‘Roos’ softball roster, as sophomores.

As a senior, Reaves garnered the District 11-3A defensive most valuable player award for Bonham, which with a bi-district advance made its ninth postseason trip in the then last 10 completed seasons.

He additionally, his senior season, earned an allstate honorable mention in Class 3A at shortstop from the Texas Sports Writers Association and made the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association 3A elite all-star team at the position for 2021.

The ‘Roos baseball team includes these four: No. 6, Trystan Mallory, 6-3 sophomore pitcher, 2021 Bonham graduate; No. 13, Brant Stuber, 6-1 sophomore infielder, 2021 Bonham graduate; No. 30 Justin Lambright, 6-1 senior pitcher, 2019 Trenton graduate/Northeast Texas Community College (Mount Pleasant); No. 44, Kaiden West, 6-0 junior pitcher. 2020 Trenton graduate.

Mallory, Stuber and Lambright competed for Austin College last season. West did not, originally signing with AC to play football in 2020.

Of note, Stuber had a .468 on-base percentage, .375 slugging percentage and .972 fielding percentage during his freshman season.

Austin College’s baseball schedule for the first month includes: Tuesday, Feb. 14, at LeTourneau, 6 p.m.; Sunday, Feb. 19, vs. Park, noon; Tuesday, Feb. 21, vs. Dallas Christian, 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 28,

The first month concludes with a home doubleheader against Ozarks (Ark.) on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2/4 p.m.

Home Country: Slim Randles

Down at the sale barn Saturday, the think tank had coagulated there with coffees to go. Doc and Dud had their dogs with them, while Bert and Dewey and Steve went stag. Dud tried to start a conversation, but the loudspeaker soon drove them outside, where they arrayed themselves on dropped tailgates and waited to hear what Dud had in mind.

“I thought about it a lot,” Dud said, “and I wondered what

the favorite part of my job was, and wondered if you fellas ever gave that any thought, too.”

They nodded. Yes, by mutual consent a worthy subject.

“With me,” Dud continued, “it wasn’t so much my job as it was my hobby. You know, writing that book. I’m claiming it as the best part of my job, anyway.”

The assembled were still waiting to read “Murder in the

Soggy Bottoms,” as it had yet to see print, and was really a work in progress. Then Bert picked up the conversation thread. “Of course I’m retired now,” he said, “but when I was running the pawn shop, my favorite part of the job happened when a customer found something in there he really needed and ended up paying much less for it than he thought he’d have to.” Doc laughed “And you made

more on it than you thought you would, too,” Bert grinned and nodded. “Yep. That was good too. And you, Dewey?”

Our accident-prone pharaoh of fertilizer got a serious look on his face. He finally said, “The best part of the fertilizer business is seeing the difference it makes in the flower gardens around town. Now maybe it’s just my imagination, but I kinda like to take a little credit for a prettier town.”

“You deserve it, Dewey,” Doc said kindly. “Well now … with me it’s a little different. I have doctoring skills, of course, and it’s good when I can help someone, but these days the most satisfying part of my job is to check someone out thoroughly and find there’s absolutely nothing wrong with them. Now that’s special.”

They all looked over at the tall cowboy, Steve.

“Digging postholes,” he said.

“What?” they said.

“You know,” he said, “the favorite part of my job.”

“Digging postholes?”

“Sure,” he said, grinning. “That’s the only job a cowboy has where he can start at the top and work down.”
