and action regarding amendment of the Lake Zoning Regulation, Definitions: Section 10.18 R, Subsection 203. RV Park and the addition of Subsection 204, definition of Recreational Vehicles: County Judge Randy Moore explained how the need for additional verbiage to be added to the rules regarding recreational vehicles came to be and asked for comments. A discussion of mostly similar views as to why, limiting the amount of time RVs would be permitted to stay in an RV park, would be in the best interest of landowners in the area affected by the park. After the exchange of views, a Motion was made by Board Member Gilbert Welch to amend the Lake Zoning Regulation by adding verbiage stating: “recreational vehicles must be currently legally inspected, registered and licensed and as may otherwise be required to lawfully be towed or operate on public roadways in the state of Texas”; and that the word calendar be added to 60 days at the bottom of paragraph 203; and in 204 the last two sentences regarding the size of the travel trailer be changed and the concept of 220 sq feet and 320 sq feet be done away with and replaced with a statement that the exterior area of travel trailers should not exceed 400 sq feet, including pullouts; and in the last item 107C, change the word “delegate” to “choose not to exercise.” Motion was seconded by Kevin Durwin and passed. Pastor Wayne Walters By Mel McKibbin Open Arms Shelter, a 501(c)3 non-profit, faithbased homeless shelter in Bonham, Texas, is proud to announce our Steps to Success program! Residents of Open Arms Shelter are working toward becoming self-sufficient. The Steps to Success (STS) program gives residents the opportunity for their spiritual and emotional/ social needs to be met. Residents can progress through three levels of care, each one with its own set of privileges and responsibilities. Open Arms also provides case management and counseling. Our Case Managers are Judie Williams and Lizset Alvarez of Bonham, Texas. They meet with the residents on a weekly basis to track their goals and progress toward self-sufficiency. Wayne Walters, Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Trenton, Texas, handles the spiritual and counseling needs of the residents. He meets with residents on a bi-weekly basis (and more often if needed). He gives them counseling and encouragement to meet their spiritual needs. Wayne has a background and experience in social services and special needs. He is an asset to the Open Arms team! The Steps to Success Support Team reviews each resident case every 30 days. The team consists of the Director, the Case Manager, and Pastor Wayne Walters. Open Arms Shelter appreciate the great support given by our community - support in praying, giving, and volunteering. If you are interested in volunteering with Open Arms Shelter, call Mel at 903-449-4451 or you can visit our website ( www. oashelter.com) to apply.

Oakwood Cemetery News

04/28/20 cleanup

January has been the month to clean up fallen leaves at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove. Because of the many big trees in the cemetery, there are lots of leaves to remove this time of year to make room for spring mowing season. Also we would like to remind our patrons that the month of March will be our semi-annual

month to remove faded floral tributes and other unsightly items from cemetery lots. Memorials were given during January for the following: Walter Don Brown, Manette Stroud, Polly Gilbert, Ruth Shipman, and Joe Hawkins. Memorial donations may be sent to Oakwood Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 96, Honey Grove, TX 75446. Thursday Evenings 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Free Meal Included

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself: • Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others? • Is there something I wish I could live without? • Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control? • Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed? By Bro. Bill Beasley “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” - John 3:16 We have been reminded to remember that Valentine’s Day is just ahead.

In my growing up time it was a day of much interest. Now that I am growing old it still has a way of speaking to me, the abundance of beautiful hearts leave a message of love. – And love is that which our world so desperately needs. This morning about four o’clock I found myself sleepless. Instead of counting sheep I began to talk to The Shepherd. What a blessing I received. I felt impressed to write my articles for the month of February on love. The topic I have selected for the first is “God’s Love Gift.” My text

Bonham, TX What I would like to do in this article is lay the ground work for at least two other sermons this month on God’s love. John 3:16 is nestled into a most familiar story – that of Nicodemus. The need for new birth is stressed. Dr. Max Lucado in his refreshing book calls John 3:16 numbers of hope. The verse gives us four simple thoughts: 1. He loves. 2. He gave. 3. We believe. 4. We live. Dr. Lucado summarized John 3:16 this way: “It is a twenty-six word parade of hope, beginning with God, ending with life, and urging us to do the same. It is brief enough to

is the familiar verse known by so many – John 3:16. It is possible that more sermons have been preached from this passage than from any other. Dr. Ralph Smith said “One of my minister friends has made more than 600 outlines of John 3:16 whose central truth is the unmeasurable, unfathomable love of God for mankind.” It was said of Henry Morehouse that every time he stood to preach he gave his text as John 3:16. As a minister since 1948 I have used it many, many times.

Anglers Bag Two More Toyota ShareLunker Legacy Class Lunkers and Two 6/11/19 Tournament Titles on1/3/17 Final Weekend of January

COUN

at Lake Palestine during the Media Bass Tournament. “Last year during this same tournament on Jan. 26, 2020 I weighed in a 12.65-pound bass off a dock with brush that had 16 feet of water at the end of it. I went back to that dock because I had caught a big one on it the year before, so I knew it held good fish this time of year. My first cast was about 7:01 a.m. and at about 7:10, I pitched up under the dock and started working my M-pack jig back to me. I was within five feet of where I caught the 12.65 pounder last year, when I got the hit. I set the hook and got her to the boat and couldn’t believe what I had just done.” The catch by Ramsey on Saturday helped propel him to a tournament victory with a total bag of 28.96 pounds. “After weighing her in at 13.07 pounds, we contacted Kyle [Brookshear] and he got everything in motion and got the ShareLunker truck headed our direction,” added Ramsey. “They took possession of the fish and I headed back out to try and finish up my limit. The ShareLunker program is

an extraordinary program and the folks put in extra time to make sure the fish are taken care of. The quality of fish in Texas lakes is improving in my opinion and the ShareLunker program has played a huge part in it. I appreciate all the work that Texas Parks and Wildlife folks put in to improve our fisheries.” It was a milestone for Lake Palestine, marking just the third Legacy Lunker for the fishery in the history of the program. The first Legacy Lunker (#545) at Lake Palestine was recorded March 2, 2013 by angler Lindell Dee Booth, Jr from Chandler, Texas, a 13.14 pounder. The second followed on February 1, 2014 with Casey Lee Laughlin of Rowlett, Texas nabbing Lunker #554, which is a lake record 13.22 pounds. After being notified by the anglers Friday and Saturday, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Inland Fisheries biologists quickly obtained and transported “ShareLunker 588” and “ShareLunker 589” to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. This spring,

AUSTIN – The 2021 Toyota ShareLunker season continued its hot start after anglers reeled in two more Legacy Class Lunkers during the final weekend of January. That brings the total to four this year, equaling the amount caught during the 2020 season with two more months still to go. In addition, both anglers went on to win their respective tournaments due in large part to landing the Legacy Lunkers. Angler Derek Mundy, from Broaddus, Texas, kicked off the weekend Friday by landing a 13.62-pounder during the Toyota Series Southwestern Division Tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Mundy recorded the catch using a crankbait shortly after hitting the water. “I pulled up on an offshore hard spot and caught it on the third cast of the day,” said Mundy. “When she got to the boat, I knew I was dealing with a good-sized fish but wasn’t necessarily expecting it to be a 13 pounder. Fishing in tournaments my goal is to get the fish into the live well as fast as I can so that’s where my focus was. However, after taking a look and weighing the fish, it was awesome to see it check in at 13.62 pounds. I caught two more fish 7.5 pounds each on the same bait three casts later.” Mundy’s Legacy Lunker was the cornerstone to a 39-pound total bag and the tournament championship. “It was a really neat experience being able to donate the fish to the incredible ShareLunker program,” added Mundy. “It’s great that Texas Parks and Wildlife works this hard to put high quality fish in the lakes. They want the fish to live as much as I do and the amount of fish care that TPWD puts into it is outstanding. It’s a top-class organization and program for sure.” Mundy’s Legacy Lunker placed Sam Rayburn back on the board with a Legacy Class fish for the second time this season. Angler Travis Moore reeled in the 13.44-pounder using a Carolina rig during the Bass Champs tournament Saturday January 9 to kick off the 2021 Toyota ShareLunker season. Sam Rayburn has produced 29 all-time Legacy Class ShareLunkers, the first two coming in 1993. Angler Daniel Ramsey, from Trinidad, Texas reeled in the second Legacy Lunker of the weekend Saturday and fourth of the 2021 season. Ramsey caught “ShareLunker 589”, which checked in at 13.07 pounds,

TPWD biologists will attempt to spawn them in an effort to make bigger, better bass that will enhance fishing in Texas lakes for years to come. “Having four ShareLunkers loaned just in the month of January of the collection season is a phenomenal start to 2021,” said Toyota ShareLunker Program Coordinator, Kyle Brookshear. “There have only been a few other times in the program’s history that January has been equal to or more productive. Most recently the 2011 season with five entries, the 2005 season with four entries, the 1995 season with seven entries, and the 1992 season with five entries. All of which were extremely productive collection seasons that included the current state record (18.18lbs) and the programs current record high

collection season (36 entries). This season is just getting started and with a little cooperation from mother nature, this could

be another banner year for the Toyota ShareLunker Program and anglers alike.

American Heart Month is a great reminder to observe your habits that impact your heart health

Press Release ‘Always listen to your heart. Even though it is on your left side, it is always right! Common early Symptoms of a Heart attack: Unusual Fatigue, Sleep Disturbances, Shortness Of Breath, Indigestion, Anxiety, and Chest Discomfort.’ Every February we celebrate American Heart Month. February also brings Valentine Day-a day to celebrate those we loveTherefore, this is the time we should ask ourselves what are we doing for those that we love that have unhealthy heart habits? Moreover, we should ask ourselves too, what kind of an effort are we making towards a heart healthy future? Heart Disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every Year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news is; heart Disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Families, health professionals and communities can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. So how can American Heart Month make a difference? The following are just a few ideas we can incorporate in our lifestyles to make a positive difference towards a heart healthy community. •Control and prevent risk factors that will lower your risk of developing heart disease early on such as by getting screened. Start off by watching your weight, controlling your cholesterol and blood pressure, quitting smoking and staying away from second hand smoke, Drinking alcohol only in moderation and most importantly, exercising 4-5 times a week and eating healthy. •Ask your doctors and nurses to be leaders in speaking out about ways to prevent heart disease •Encourage families to make small healthy changes, like using spice to season their food instead of salt and not to eat from precooked frozen and canned containers but use fresh vegetables and fruit instead. •Motivate teachers to make physical activity an integral part of the school. This can create awareness amongst students about good healthy habits.

•Tweet or Facebook about American Heart Month so it will get everyone’s attention towards heart healthy habits or you can introduce heart healthy lifestyle in your newsletter. •Host an American Heart Month at local schools by encouraging everyone to wear red one day in February. •Team up with health professionals in your community to host a 20minute group walk around your office at lunchtime to raise heart health awareness. •At home, host a cooking demonstration using hearthealthy recipes for your family members and friends. •Encourage your local Red Cross to host a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training event in your community. These skills can help save the life of someone who has sudden cardiac arrest. •In February, encourage local fitness centers to spread the word about the importance of physical activity to prevent heart disease by wearing red. Get Real: The nations’ leading authority on heart health, the American Heart Association, recommends that heart attack prevention should begin by age 20. Which means, you should assess your risk factors and should start taking proper precautions to keep them low. For Americans, age 40 and older, or those with multiple risk factors. It is important to calculate the risk of developing

cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years. Since first ever heart attacks or strokes can be fatal or disabling, prevention is crucial. The latest figures by the Center for Disease Control paint a realistic picture of heart disease in the US. •About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year-one in every four deaths. •Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. •Every year, about 720,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 515,000 are a first attack and 205,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack. •Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year. Therefore, patients already diagnosed with heart disease, or those with a family history or other risk factors have a greater chance of overcoming it by seeking preventative measures and early treatment. Though, the latest preventative and intervention procedures are keeping heart patients alive longer and thus resulting in fewer victims of acute heart attacks, yet survivors must live with their heart condition, which places them at a continual level of risk. Therefore, if someone has suffered a heart attack, the damage to the heart remains, so they must remain proactive in their heart health treatment for life.

been located at the Armory but due to their building’s seriously dilapidated condition, it became necessary for the ladies running the Pantry; Jo Ann Dyer, Star Breece and Kim Humbarger to seek other accommodations. They were very thankful when Pastor Craig Clark provided the solution to their problem by offering the use of the church. They are also very thankful for the volunteers and donors who make their effort to reach those needing assistance possible. Donors, like one who recently gave a sizable donation but asked to remain anonymous. Schools and churches,

Cheyenne is giving both time and money to honor the memory of recently deceased, Emery Banker, who was a previous teacher of hers with a heart for the poor. Which animal do you think has the greatest number of names (40 of them in English alone)? Here’s a hint: painter...catamount... panther...puma...got it yet? It’s the mountain lion (or cougar or ‘mountain screamer’ or ‘ghost cat’)! And there are almost as many opinions about this big North American cat as there are names for it. Some people think

of it as a vicious killer, others as a misunderstood loner. Either way, though, we can all agree that the cougar is one for the record books. With the largest range of any wild land animal in the Americas, cougars are found from the Yukon Territory in Canada to the southern tip of South America. Fannin County Republican Women, PAC – First Meeting of 2021 with County Judge Randy Moore Speaking Hope and Unity for Fannin County

By Rose Schwartz The Fannin County Republican Women began a new year of meetings with a full house at the Family Life Center, Monday night. The meeting started at 6:00 p.m. with prayer and a recital of pledges to the USA and Texas flags. Rosemary Clemons, president of the FCRW, then introduced the board members of the club and later asked the many recently elected officials in attendance, to stand and introduce themselves to all attending the meeting. Encouraging reports were given by Linda Long, Karen Butler, Sandy Hood, Joyce Buchanan, Iris Paul and Violet Spell. Of noted interest, Iris Paul, PAC Treasurer for FCRW and Chairman on the board for “Caring For America Program” stated that the Fannin County Community Ministries Food Pantry was adopted by the Caring For America Program. She stated that one dollar can provide three meals to a family and thirty-eight families had been helped just that day. Donations for the ministry were accepted at the meeting. Melanie Grammar, Fannin County Republican Party Chairwoman, gave an inspiring presentation of all the good that has been done and all that still needs to be done by civic minded Republicans. She addressed those who have been discouraged by recent events to not allow fear to get in the way of doing what is right by continuing to vote and stand for our values. She noted that those interested in running for political offices should know that the first day to file for a county or state office is November 13 and those interested in precinct chair positions should file in September. Anyone interested was encouraged to contact her. She also voiced a need for election workers with training being provided by County Clerk Tammy Biggar sometime in mid-summer for Constitutional races. Focusing on the FCRW, and speaking as the District Chair for the club, Melanie reminded members that the state convention would be held this year at the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, Oct 13-16. She stressed that due to delegate qualifications, the deadline to renew membership in the Fannin County Republican Women club is March 1st. For recent legislative information and ways to get involved, Melanie stressed all members should be receiving the TFRW newsletter which has information on how to participate in special training for women wanting to run for a public office. Ending her presentation, she noted that it is anticipated for there to be 11,000 members in the Texas Federation of Republican Women by August of this year because, women know there is still a job that needs to be done and they are not afraid to do it. District Judge Laurie Blake introduced County Judge Randy Moore as the special speaker for the night’s meeting to speak about goals for the County. County Judge Moore began by congratulating the FCRW on their accomplishments and by recognizing his wife of 45 years. Judge Moore touched on the good work being done by County employees and how excited he is about getting the county budget

back in the black. He then spoke in length of general information and updates on Bois D’Arc Lake, noting that construction is nearing completion on the 16,641acre lake. Updates include: roads being complete around lake, real estate soon to be available for purchase with a real estate meeting to take place next week, dam to close off in March with water level at 511 and expectations for it to be up to permanent level of 534 in June when it is completely opened. Judge Moore noted that unlike other lakes in Texas, Bois D’Arc is a well-planned lake that will have excellent hunting habitat and great fisheries. He said Lake Ralph Hall, though still in planning stages, will have similar attributes and will help in solving erosion problems in that area.

Moore gave current stats at: 2,315 confirmed, 506 probable, for a total of 2,821 cases in Fannin County with 80 fatalities. And though hospitalizations are at 18.82%, down from 23%, the hospitals are still full. He said with three county departments being closed due to Covid-19, Commissioners Court is being held at this time by Zoom. Judge Moore said because Fannin County set up a “Covid Hub” early on, the County has been receiving a lion’s share of vaccines rounding out to about a thousand doses a week. He suggested those calling into the Covid Vaccine Call Center at 903-5832189, to add that number to their contact list so they can recognize the number when they are called back for an appt. Judge Moore said he quoted Psalm 133:1 to a

was wanting to interview him. He stressed that everyone working together in the county in unity is the key in making things work smoothly. When asked to speak on the Courthouse, he explained that the completed project will be a jewel with the cupola going up around the end of May. The different offices that will be housed in the restored courthouse should be moving in sometime in September with a dedication ceremony slated to take place Oct 5. County Judge Randy Moore said the hope is to have the Governor and other dignitaries present for the dedication and invites all to be there. The meeting adjourned at 7:22 p.m.

BORN AGAIN

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit. Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:1-8. In the opening chapters of John in the New Testament, a high-ranking religious leader sought out Jesus. Nicodemus was a leader and teacher of the Jews. He was enthralled with not only the message of Jesus, but the miracles being performed by this newcomer’s hands. Perhaps the common folk were flocking around Jesus instead of going to church. Nicodemus, unlike his fellow rabbis, was impressed and curious about Jesus rather than angry and jealous. He came to Jesus’ camp in the night so he would not be discovered concerting with the enemy. Nicodemus, being a teacher himself, knew there was something different about this Jewish teacher. Jesus’ teaching and the great miracles He was doing could not be duplicated by his fellow religious leaders; but why had He surrounded himself with a band of rag-tag fishermen and women of questionable reputation? Nicodemus was convinced Jesus must be from God, but his fellow church leaders thought He was from the devil himself. (Matthew 12:24). Nicodemus to Jesus – “Tell me how you do this, for only God can do such miracles.” Jesus – YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN TO SEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD! What a strange answer and what does it mean? The majority in our country do not understand the term “BornAgain”. It is most often related to a sect of approximately 1 in 4 Christians who are labeled Evangelical Christians. This is not what Jesus was talking about; the fact is that what He said has nothing to do with any religion or denomination. Jesus was speaking with one of the local church leaders when he emphatically told Nicodemus, “TRULY, TRULY I TELL YOU. YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN.” [Emphasis added.] In other words – *****LISTEN, THIS IS IMPORTANT! YOU MUST BE BORN-AGAIN TO ENTER GOD’S KINGDOM [HIS DWELLING PLACE]. ***** To understand the meaning of “BORN-AGAIN”, we must return to Genesis, to the beginning of God’s creation of man. When man (the name ADAM means MAN) was created by God he was created for a purpose, as was the earth. Earth was to be man’s home; man would master the earth with the God given authority and power of God which rules the universe and everything in it. GOD SPOKE! The earth and everything in it came into existence; the plants sprouted, the waters produced fish, the air was inhabited by birds, the earth teemed with every kind of animal according to God’s Plan and at His Word. The world stood in its place and “God saw that it was good.” Genesis 1:25. But Man, the Crown of God’s creation was different. God molded man with His own hands from the earth He created. Fashioned by God from the sub-atomic to the cellular level, God created His man into perfection with His own hands. Then God performed the greatest miracle of all – GOD breathed His own breath into this lifeless yet perfectly formed being. With God’s very life, man became a living being. At the entrance of God’s breath, Adam opened his eyes for the first time to the Face of his creator – His Father. The first sound Adam heard was His Father’s words; the first touch he felt was his Father’s arms around him. All that was required of this first man was that he return his Father’s love by being obedient to Him. As we know, Adam did not maintain his end of his relationship with God. He gave up the Breath (Spirit) of God and received into himself the seed of death – which would be passed to all his children to come. The entire human race would now be separated from the Life of God. NOT GOD’S PLAN! But God had another Plan to save His Creation. There would be another Man – the second Adam. This God-Man, born by the Holy Spirit without Adam’s seed of death in Him would be born on earth to save the human race from their plight. He would be named, YESHUA (meaning God’s Salvation, aka JESUS). Although He would have to endure the same hardships and temptations of Adam’s children, He would resist and continue to obey HIS FATHER. In HIS OBEDIENCE and the offering up of HIS LIFE, He crushed the seed of death for the entire human race. By receiving Jesus’ life, humankind could be BORN-AGAIN of HIS SEED by The Spirit of God. Those born in Jesus Christ could once again breathe in the Breath (Spirit) of God. Man, woman, and child would once again be THE CHILDREN OF GOD. “For, the first man [Adam] was of the dust of the earth, the second Adam is of heaven. And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the Heavenly Man.” I Corinthians 15:47,49. THIS IS GOD’S PLAN, HIS GIFT BORN OUT OF LOVE FOR HIS CREATION. HE IS ASKING US TO BELIEVE HIM AND ACCEPT THIS GIFT, OUR SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do. [at the beginning of creation.]” Ephesians 2:10 God has His Hand stretched out to us. He is asking us to come home to our Creator–Our Father. It is HIS plea; it is HIS Gift, paid for by the Second Adam [Jesus Christ]. JESUS got it all right and paid the price so all His posterity could be BORN-AGAIN! That leaves each of us with one question to answer, “HAVE WE BEEN BORN AGAIN?” Signed: Teri Sheddy

Every once in a while, we get a horse that comes into the clinic with “back pain.” Usually, at some point, someone in the horse’s life (owner, farrier, chiropractor) has wondered if the horse may not have “Kissing Spine,” and we get asked to look for it. While not necessarily a new phenomenon, Kissing Spine, or more correctly termed Overriding Dorsal Spinous Processes, is the term we use when horses have interference between one or more spinous

processes. This is different from spinal arthritis, which is interference within where the joints of the vertebrae. Let’s talk about anatomy. The spinal column consists of five different types of vertebrae. The cervical spine, circled in green, consists of the first seven vertebrae. The thoracic spine, circled in red, consists of 18 vertebrae, and the lumbar spine, circled in orange, has six vertebrae. The last two parts, the sacral and the caudal vertebrae, is the last 20 vertebrae of the spinal column and tail. The parts that are most affected by Kissing Spine are the thoracic and the lumbar vertebrae, circled in red and orange. Most commonly, T-15 is affected, which is right under the rider’s seat. Kissing spine occurs when one or more of the spinous processes are too close together. Some may even be touching. This causes the bone to start reacting, and the only thing bone knows how to do is make more bone. Bony proliferation begins to occur between the two spinous processes that are too close together. This can also be affected by poor saddle fit and poor muscle development along the spine. A common misconception with Kissing Spine is that it is the cause of most back pain. This is not true. 5% of back pain in horses is actually from the back. 95%

of back pain in horses stems from other problem areas such as hocks, stifles, and feet. In fact, most horses with Kissing Spine don’t actually show any clinical signs. That’s why it’s very important when trying to diagnose a back pain problem, to take into account a full lameness exam. Once this has been performed, there are four types of diagnostics we can do to look for Kissing Spine. The easiest one is x-ray, where you can actually see the bone that has been laid down in reaction to the spinous processes touching. You can also use bone scans, ultrasound, and thermography to diagnose Kissing Spine. Once diagnosed, there are a few different treatment options for this problem. The first way to address Kissing Spine is to ensure you have a properly fitted saddle. Once this has been performed, horses can begin physical therapy. Exercises to stretch the back and engage the core muscles can help spread the spinous processes apart. Anti-inflammatories may also be used to help facilitate increased comfort and less bony reaction. If this isn’t enough to alleviate pain, injections of steroids in between the vertebrae may give some level of comfort. Mesotherapy, which is the injection of anti-inflammatories into the tissue around the spine can also be helpful in treating Kissing Spine. If all else fails, surgery can be used to either remove the affected parts of the bone, or to cut the ligament in between the processes to relieve tension and allow expansion. The important thing to remember about Kissing Spine is that not all horses with back pain have it, and not all horses diagnosed with Kissing Spine have back pain. If your horse is showing problems with performance, or is experiencing behavior problems at certain points of their day, be sure to call your veterinarian for a full lameness workup. At this time, Kissing Spine may be addressed and potentially treated to keep your horse as healthy and happy as possible.

Setting pepper plants out before the soil temperature is 70° F could stunt their growth for the entire growing season. Correct temperature readings need to be observed on three consecutive mornings. Readings should be taken at a depth of 1”– 2” for seeds and 4” – 6” for transplants. Use the following guide for minimum soil temperatures for seeds and transplants: 60° F – tomatoes, cucumbers, snap beans 65° F – sweet corn, lima

For optimum growth, all transplants and seeds need to be planted within a certain soil temperature range. Along with your calendar, a soil thermometer will help determine the proper planting time. Planting too early, before the soil has had time to warm up, can lead to seed rot, slowed germination, poor growth and disease. For example, cucumber seeds usually take less than a week to germinate in a soil of 70° F. They could take

Soccer and Shivers: Bonhi soccer seasons underway as squads vie for postseason returns

Bonham head soccer coach Juan Gamboa speaks at halftime on Jan. 27 to the Lady Warriors who rebounded from a tough District 11-4A opener loss that night with a win at Nevada Community on Jan. 30. Gamboa coaches both the girls and boys soccer teams at Bonham -- and plays goalkeeper for the Dallas Sidekicks who are part of the Major Arena Soccer League and play their home matches at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.

Bonham senior Hayley McBroom (11) kicks the ball while senior goalkeeper Joselyn Solis (18) watches on Jan. 27 during the Lady Warriors’ District 11-4A opener soccer match against Melissa at Warrior Stadium. Despite a tough start, Bonham held the Lady Cardinals to only three second-half goals during the 11-0 loss.

Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Blake Turner had only 58 wins as a head basketball coach when he arrived at Ector from Claude in 2015. On Jan. 29, he garnered his second career milestone -and a major one at that -- as head coach of the Class 1A Eagles. Turner recorded his 200th win, as frontrunner and host Ector (17-6, 10-0) defeated second-place Miller Grove, 48-46, in 23-1A boys basketball to remain undefeated in district play. “I’ve got to attribute it to the kids,” said Turner. “I’ve had a good run of kids who have bought in. They have earned everything.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” he said. “I’m excited to get it. “It’s special and a great milestone.” Turner won No. 200 during a season - his ninth as a head basketball coach -- in which the Eagles have again racked up wins, despite returning only one major contributor -- senior Kyrin Beach -- from last year’s Region III-1A quarterfinalist. That seniorladen team went 30-7 -- a career single-season victory best for Turner -- en route to Ector’s then third boys basketball district title in the last four years, second regional quarterfinals trip during his tenure at the school and team’s sixth-consecutive postseason.

“This year’s team plays a lot of defense,” said Turner. “Last year, we would outscore you,” he said. “We graduated 90 percent of that offense. “The kids this year bought into playing defense. Same results: We’ve been able to do it again this year.” As January concluded the Eagles need only one more district win to assure another postseason -- and to start Turner’s climb toward more milestones. Note: Head coach Blake Turner’s 100th win came against Trenton to start the 2017-18 season -- when thenfreshman Kyrin Beach first appeared on Ector’s varsity roster.
